i always used to be quite proud of myself for not allowing fans to ruin a show/game/character for me.

but jesus fuck idk what graves fans are being fed this past year but oh my god that man is almost fully ruined for me just because of the fans he has acquired.

cause a year back i used to love him, he was Great, loved him, very fun. but now, any time i see a graves fan i have to stare and try to calculate in my head how high of a chance it is that this person will be extra weird

Yesterday I had some free time to watch anime and what did I use it for? Watching the latest episode of To Be Hero X instead of catching up on horizons (I haven't even watched the first ep of mega voltage 😭)

And after that?? I DIDN'T EVEN CATCH UP TO HORIZONS AND INSTEAD START AN ENTIRE NEW ANIME (it was bungo stray dogs btw, the funny dazai clips on yt convinced me to watch it)

Again, I decided to watch tbhk s2 instead of catching up to horizons 😭 Atp, my interest in horizons is hanging on fanfics, my hz moots, and amethio

I never thought myself a faithful person, not as a quality or anything, just more of a "you should be faithful to friends and family OF COURSE, that's just a given natural thing every human should have" but nothing else, like not to brands or whatever. But..

After having 3 pairs of the same exact earphones and 1 pair of a slightly better and more expensive ones (bc i got it wrong).... like i already knew i was FAITHFUL to this specific product because it never failed me. The reason i had 4 pairs since 2014? (FOUR IN TEN YEARS ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I USED TO BUY NEW CHEAP EARPHONES EVERY 2 DAYS) is not even because they stopped working on their own, i literally stepped on my first pair, the 2nd one i also stepped on one of the buds, the 3rd one i lost them and got the other better ones by mistake (they're quite better actually but i didn't want to pay extra 10€ but i got them bc they look the same 🥲) nd now i have them both bc i found pair no 3.

Anyway where i'm going with this... sorry if anyone is actually reading all this i just want to get it off my head. But like with phones, i've had a samsung in like? Idek like 2015 and it was great and i've had the same brand since because again, it never really failed me (everytime i changed was either for updates, bc it was stolen or because it went through too much beer on the screen - i.e. the last one and mind you it still works! Just not the screen and i guess it was cheaper to buy a new phone) but i got this new phone which i didn't really want anyway. But i needed for work and etc wtv and it doesn't have an earphone jack which is annoying. But now comes back my faithfulness bc i bought an adapter for my perfectly great earphones and now it DOESN'T WORK bc this phone apparently sucks (i could make an entire essay about them doing this on purpose so you have to buy wireless ones and only use their own brand etc) and i'm just like "ok i'll hang out with my last samsung that works and usa that little one just for music..... BRO THAT IS SO INCONVENIENT???? BUT I AM WILLING TO JUST SO I DON'T BUY WIRELESS ONES

And now you ask "why don't you just use your old phone anyway and why did you get a new one" that is indeed a good question and even though my life would suck immensely using that old thing i kinda wish to go back. But alas i am a photographer and in case ya didn't know that takes up a shit load of memory, as well as needing some apps that that phone cannot support / have space and RAM for 🫠 idk why i chose such an expensive hobby either lmao

Ever since POTD aired I have been raging in my tags, casually reblogging wonderful gifs and fanarts, and staying away from discussions by not using any main tags, but. I'm starting to feel like that 52 Hz whale. Or Beatles' fool on the hill. And I can't tell if it's hearing impairment on my part or if the old guy playing the lyre is not really touching the strings. I can only hope anyone who might get upset filters their tags and won't go under the cut, but I genuinely need to share this with anyone.

Can someone tell me what the Doctor being forced to regenerate into the Master actually did? What it means, outside of welp, I guess text said it is so so it so and it's bad because the text said it's bad? Apart from the Doctor being... less un-present in the story than when a little girl turned them into a picture, but wtv, I get what happened here, Thirteen is in the netherworld of regeneration, and for now no embodied consciousness of the Doctor exists, while the Master's does. But that's in no way different from the Doctor just being dead? Stuff achieved by a self-made flood in alternative timeline in Turn Left? Tho I guess then the Master stays trapped as Yana at the end of the universe, incidentally Saxon is not mentioned in the episode and, well there's a reason TL is so good.

I mean, the one, definite thing that's supposed to stay throughout all of the regenerations, the thing that makes the character the same bloody character and not simply the same show with a protagonist of the same name are MEMORIES. Like this approach to identity or not, that's what's spelled out by Five:

And incidentally when Roberts!Master absorbs Eight's lives he also explicitly gets the Doctor's memories.

So, the logical conclusion is, the Master absorbed the Doctor's memories when she was forced to regenerate into him, right? That's what it means that he's the Doctor now, isn't it?

Well, no. He doesn't know who Fugutive Doctor is.

Something he should know if he now has the Doctor's memories. Nitpick? A handful of lines? Maybe. Except the plot's resolution depends on this handful of lines, you'd expect thought to be put into them. I guess the argument can be made that he's in post-regenerative stress? The Doctors sometimes had memory problems after regenerating? But that's kind of a stretch considering the confidence of both Yaz and the Doctor's disembodied memories that the Master won't know who Fugitive is. Watsonianly I guess this stretch could be made, but doylistly it's glaring that no thoughts were made.

And look, if it was just the case that the Master is an idiot? That the idea that one time lord can be regenerated into another was simply as wrong as that Rassilon will let them ascend into eternal choruses of harmony of the spheres? OK! I'd take it! Realisations are made, things are felt, reactions happen, a story is told. But in POTD no-one questions whether the Master is now the Doctor on the grounds of identity, memories, immortal soul, Dasein or whatever you choose to call it, only on... companions knowing the Master is not the Doctor. I guess in School Reunion Ten spent some time not being the Doctor when Sarah Jane hasn't spontaneously realised he's the person? And still was the Doctor as John Smith because Martha knew about the chameleon arch?

There could be some discussion about refected self as/vs. identity but this isn't what the text seems to be saying or what anyone got from it? And I know I'm ranting stuff out, but I genuinely want to discuss this! Am I missing something here, just what is there for the reader to sympathize with? I mean, it's sad, and Dhawan's teary lil' eyes are heartbreaking, but I really don't get what actually happened there?...

Which is something that frustrates me, personally. Again, I really don't want to start any haterants, it is no hill I'm ready to die on, in fact it's fairly possible I'll slide down it as soon as I post this, but I also really want to discuss this with someone...

'Cause right now I guess I have to admit this situation indeed makes me sympathize with the Master as the only person that seems aware of plot implications of a major development that noone else acknowledges. And I admit: it sucks.

So I fit a kulintangan scale into equal temperament.

No, it’s not in a major pentatonic scale. I have no idea why Bornean music always depends on the major pentatonic scale in modern ethnic music. OK, rant aside, basically I found a paper that talks about how zinc kulintangans are made. Oh also these are kulintangans:

Anyway, close to the end of the paper were frequencies of the kulintangan set being studied, from highest to lowest (in Hz):

808, 676, 608, 500, 460, 408, 338, 305, 277

Out of curiosity, I decided to pull out this handy tool and convert the frequencies to their closest equivalents on the equal temperament scale (the previous set of numbers but in reverse):

C#4 D#4 E4 G#4 A#4 B4 D#5 E5 G#5

I noticed the D# E G# pattern and assumed C#4 and B4 must refer to the same, uh, note? So I averaged them to a C. C4, C5. There. Now the main scale should look a little bit like this:

C D# E G# A#

which sounds... pretty wonky, really. Then I switched the first note of the scale around and found a nice little scale (to me, at least):

G# A# C D# E

Better. (Kinda.)

The Rebel Princess Episode 59 Thoughts (SPOILERS)

So I have qualms about episode 59. It just wasn’t as satisfying as I hoped it would be. I wished Awu had raged more against Helan Zhen. Yes, HZ is a pitiful character, but that doesn’t excuse his predatory behaviour towards Awu, or what he did to Xiao Qi. 

I get that Awu doesn’t have it in her to kill him because she’s never killed anyone before (even though she wants to), but I wish she’d at least finally show some of her hate towards him, like say how much she hates him for killing her husband. Instead, she goes the Mary Sue route and cuts the rope that binds him. I mean, I get why, it’s to help them both escape, but she could at least give a passionate monologue beforehand. 

And then HZ dies by saving her (or maybe he doesn’t die and is just injured. They probably won’t leave Hulan without a ruler). He (seemingly) dies in a martyr-like fashion, without having to face any consequences for what he did to Awu and Xiao Qi. I really wish he and Xiao Qi got another confrontation. 

I especially wished Awu would have said something during this whole ordeal. She just stands there, silent and in shock the whole time. I was able to excuse the stoic expressions before, but now that she’s in a life-or-death situation, face-to-face with the man who killed her husband. I just wished she emoted a bit more. Give a last hurrah. If this is your last moment, you should vent all of your emotions that you’ve endured up til this point. 

Anyway, just took a pause to rant a bit. Now going to dive back into the rest of the episodes.

I have a problem with Class D amps

There I said it. It has nothing to do with anything I have heard in a big system. I had a Class D amp in my old car as I wanted to keep the drain on the battery minimal. I liked it there. Also it ran off a battery not wall current. DC as from a battery is different.

The Class of a circuit has nothing to do with quality. Class A is not better than B or A/B or C or D or whatever. It is purely a description of how the thing works. Marketers will spin things and exploit the ignorance of the consumer. But enough of my mini rant.

Class D is not digital per se. It uses digital methods but specifically those are for what is called switching and modulation. The signal is boosted using a high frequency carrier to create a sequence of digital pulses that are summed to model an audio frequency signal. The sequence is a digital Pulse Code Modulation. The ironic part is the summing feature is a straight forward analog filter. A very nice capacitor acts to sum the signal and an inductor blocks the carrier frequency. Almost caveman electrically speaking.

My problem is conceptual and to do with the power supply. An analog preamp or amp uses a transformer in the power supply. It converts the voltage and current of the household wall into a level the device wants. My franken amp for example wants 70 to 80 volts in its rails. That is less than the 120 in my wall or the 240 in many other places. The transformer is a big heavy lump of metal.

The big lump method develops a smooth series of waves of electric power that is passed by diodes and rectified into pulses of plus and minus volts. Those pulses (at a low frequency of 60 or 50 Hz) are filtered into big capacitors that provide the reservoir of power to the circuit. It is like a big river with rapids and falls flowing into a calm lake behind a big dam.

Class D uses switching power supplies. They don't have to, but it means they can avoid those heavy lumps we call transformers. So they do. The way a switching supply works is to watch the voltage rise in its respective positive and negative side and when it hits the voltage it wants it blocks any more to zero. It turns off the tap as it were. A power signal rises from say 0 to 80 volts and then the PS circuit blocks the rest. The power delivered is the area under the triangular plot of the incoming voltage to the blocking level. That is less than the area under the full wave. They could burn the excess with a regulator but that is very energy inefficient as burn is the right word. It goes to heat. Complete blocking saves coal.

Yes an analog rectifier only uses the tip of the wave to keep the capacitors charged. If there is a big enough demand the voltage may drop a bit, but it is into the fattest part of the sine curve top. If my franken amp had a switching PS it would be blocking most of the charging wave and only the tiny pointy tip of the triangular wave near 80V is keeping the capacitors fed. That is smaller.

I guess if you had even more and bigger capacitors after a switching supply it would be fine. But those are large and expensive so they put in small ones. If you look at some of those Class D kits the power supplies are small and cute even for a 700 Watt amp. Complete Class D amps are small and light and easy to ship even if they are powerful.

A switching PS cannot deliver as much current or put another way Volt*Amps into an amplifier. I think that is a serious flaw.

My one consistent amplifier tweak is to bump up the capacitors in a PS. The Franken Amp has 1,040,000 micro Farads of capacitance in the PS. It has a very audible effect. I also split the two stereo channels so each have their own reservoir so cross talk through the PS is impossible. I can hear that easily.

I know it is better that way.

I may think of a Class D in my new car. Gotta save the battery you know.

There are a bunch of nuances that need to be added here:

Freud’s theories of the “unconscious mind” developed in the context of a man who grew up as a Chasidic Jew in the late 19th Century in Austria; as such he would have received many strong and sometimes conflicting messages about what was Not Permitted, especially surrounding sex and social interaction. His theory of a mind divided between bodily urges and societal rules, with conscious thought acting as a mediator between the two, is less about a universal human condition than it is about a boy who grew up being told that fundamentally human urges were fundamentally evil. 

There really isn’t a clear dividing line between ‘conscious’ and ‘unconscious’ thought, especially the way it’s portrayed in popular media. We like to think of our minds as a single self-contained train of thought, but we’re more like a cloud of small processes which form into a single gestalt being. At any given moment, the majority of your brain isn’t actively engaged in evaluating the world, but rather a vast multitude of simple systems are silently listening to your sensory input and waiting to hear something relevant to them. 

There’s a massive range of different ways the human brain can function. Some people are barely aware of their own thought process while others are able to break down their cognition down to the smallest “subroutine” and explain their mental process in detail. Pretty much any blanket statement about how the human mind works is going to be at least partially incorrect or oversimplified.

There are natural emergent effects of the nervous system which aren’t exactly thoughts, but have an impact on our cognition, such as neural oscillations (a.k.a. “brain waves”) and seizure activity. These emergent effects aren’t discrete phenomena but rather the result of individual reactions occurring in sequence (i.e. it takes 560 milliseconds for a stimulus at one end of a ganglion to reach the other end and be fed back to the beginning, resulting in a ~30 Hz “wave”); however, they can effect the surrounding neurons and influence them to fire in a similar sequence. These aren’t thoughts, conscious or unconscious, but they can trigger cognition or behavior that wouldn’t otherwise happen (the most common example being dreams), and it isn’t uncommon to see people misattribute these effects to something in their own mind. 

For the most part, our knowledge of how other peoples’ minds work depends on people’s self-report of their own thoughts and feelings. The problem is that we tend to be unreliable narrators of our own thought processes, both to ourselves and to the world. That means that what we may label as an “unconscious thought” was actually just “a thought I had and was aware of, but which I didn’t want to admit to.” On the other hand, our memories of our thought processes tend to be post-hoc reconstructions of our reasoning, rather than a true log of our chain of thought in the moment, which will often leave out thought a great deal of the decision process that happened in the moment.

So... yeah. Both the psychologist and the philosopher are wrong. The kitten is probably the closest to the truth. Especially if you slogged your way through that entire rant, in which case your brain probably does feel a bit like a scrambled egg.  

 At some point in the near future when I’m done moving, I’ll try to dig out my old schematics for artificial neurons, so that anyone interested can build and experiment with artificial brains. They also make nice Christmas ornaments or refrigerator decorations.
