What did/do you like about Pharah?
Uh, gameplay-wise, I really love characters in shooters who rely on three-dimensional movement techs. Chaining together hover and jump to stay in the air for as long as possible and keep momentum is so satisfying, and picking enemies off from the sky made me feel like a bird of prey. I was a good Pharah main.
Story-wise, there unfortunately isn't much to canonically go off because Pharah is so underutilized and neglected. Her personality's pretty boilerplate "heroic hero" (she's literally inspired by Captain America).
But it's the crumbs/bits and pieces that I really latched onto. Pharah's a confirmed lesbian; her short story with Baptiste implies she harbors a crush on Mercy (fucking thank you.). She's biracial Egyptian/First Nations. She has major mommy issues, having grown up both admiring and resenting Ana. She's the bridge between Old Overwatch, inspired by the idealized heroes who surrounded her childhood, and New Overwatch. She's one of the only inter-generational characters in the cast; someone whose experiences span the gap, which is why I seriously believe Pharah would make a great main character.
There isn't much to go off of, though; she's a very uncomplicated character (she's a soldier for a private military corporation, lol.). But that just means she's a blank slate character, so I've seen fanfic writers run wild and create some really interesting takes on her. My favorite interpretation of her's a dense, herbo gym-bro type (a lot of her liens are about work outs, exercising, and playing sports) who's easily excitable under her seemingly self-serious, armored visage. We see how she tends to gloat and hype herself up when she's on a streak too, so Pharah definitely has a competitive and boastful side under her more professional and militant performance.
Now Mercy? Mercy is a real complex character.

Never shutting up about the flash and gl dynamic I’m seeing (and will continue to see as I watch) in jl/jlu. It’s the annoying gen z younger brother/perpetually tired and serious older brother dynamic y’all. It’s gl thinking wally is annoying and unserious and immature but he’s also regularly amused and indulging in wally and all of his wallyism. It’s gl wanting to dump wally somewhere in a desert but would also be sad if he left for like more than 48 hours. It’s gl wanting to bash his skull in by the sheer brilliance and stupidity wally exemplifies almost simultaneously (john watching wally deconstruct and reassemble alien technology for funsies !! vs watching wally eat twenty hot dogs in thirty seconds bc hawkgirl said he couldn’t). It’s gl being embarrassed by flash but also finding him super funny ,, but it’s even funnier to pretend he doesn’t because then you get your cringe best friend/little brother that’s either on child genius or dumber than a brick wall defending you from getting a death penalty sentence at a public intergalactic space trial where you are being accused of abusing authority and executing a mass genocide. And then y’all go to a baseball game that same day.

hey. have you all heard about this. they’re making a squid game reality tv show. like an actual squid games. have you heard about that. did you hear about amazon also planning a disco elysium tv series, and a life is strange tv series? of course we already have rings of power and then over on HBO we have the last of us and then wherever that shit halo show is streaming. and don’t forget all the star wars spin offs whose taglines are “the revolution will be televised” while being streamed by one of the worst media companies of all time who uses their billions of dollars to support bigots in the government and create military propaganda. have you heard about the booktok industry plant? have you heard about that author who gets their agent to spoon-feed them tropes so they can write the most soulless, bland fanfic that they can then repackage as a YA novel (she’s a new york times best-selling author btw) have you heard about all of that?
the creative industry is so discouraging right now. sometimes i really struggle to find any motivation at all when i see the way certain stories are treated - completely bastardized, milked for all their worth (and then beaten like a dead horse just for good measure) or otherwise you have creators that clearly could not care less, nothing but a cash grab with a pretty coat of paint, usually piggybacking off of trends or just using a pre-existing media (because then you already have a pre-existing fanbase. easy money!) and i’m not going to pretend like i understand how all of it works, what the process is from book/game to movie deal to netflix show but i will say i hate that this is the “goal” now, that this seems to be the expectation with so much art these days, whether the creator wants it or not.
it’s all just so... bleak.

Flora and Laurence GOT something in common...
Something a friend shared with me this morning made me think of an interesting possibility with Flora / Moon Presence, and parallel with what Laurence did? Here is what he sent to me:
Good gnostic moment! But it made me wonder if a similar interpretation could apply to Flora?
She is "insidious", and known as that for a good reason! She is rather beastlike herself, especially in the second stage of her battle. The cycle of hunt and pursuit for ascension are both two sides of the same cycle, and, indeed, name 'Paleblood Moon' applies: she 'becomes' red from consuming the blood! It doesn't matter if it is the bloodshed of the hunt, or it is giving away the free will in worship (the Kin associated with stars and moon have grey/yellowish blood, devoid of red cells). She governs the cycle that benefits her no matter which way it is approached, but...
Isn't it possible that she was the one leaving humanity (and maybe Pthumerians too) with enough resources to one day comprehend her evil and overcome it? Did not she leave people enough eldrich augurs and means to obtain enough Insight / Cords to, eventually, defeat her?
(Internal filenames here ( x ))
So what if whatever befell Flora that made her become more monstrous and beastly, made her attempt last ditch effort to leave the people means to see what happened and undo her if things go too far, before corruption completely engulfed her?
But this just reminds me of how Laurence has been acting. My favourite bit is that initial prayer of the Healing Church did not have the 'seek the old blood' bit that Emelia recites! You can hear it is missing if you compare a prayer read by the woman in the Nightmare cathedral (Research Hall one) and Emilia's!
The prayer certainly got extended later down in Healing Church's history! But also,
Laurence was aware of the risk of failing and becoming corrupted with blood - he knew what dangerous thing he was meddling with, and seems like he left the tools for future generation to undo the Clerics if he ever loses his wits, or if the whole institution grows corrupted for that matter. And, well, of course that happened...
I just find it rather deep that whereas Laurence was familiar with the Moon Presence (maybe that's why Ludwig was too) and could summon her, they also share fate despite large gap in the scale between Great One's and human's fate. I personally have a headcanon that upon first descent (or at least first in a long while) to communicate with mortals, Great Ones will be more prone to choose a person they feel is a kindred spirit, someone who "understands". What if Flora could subconsciously feel as though Laurence is like a little or a younger version of her, meddling with something dark and being doomed to get corrupted, but also being precautions enough to leave resources to comprehend his corruption? Both reckless fool and next level thinker, hahah.
(Sidetracking for a second. We can't know why Kos chose Rom specifically, but in continuation of this thought it could be a similar reason - maybe Rom just shared a similar 'spirit'. Both Sea and Lake are bodies of water guarding people from cosmic horrors they are not ready for, so what if both wished to not dump more than necessary on humans? Rom has many "children" and worshippers of Kos were assimilated into fish/snail people, so what if there was a similar mix of motherly attitude but also the craving of protection and admiration by many? Great Ones being more prone to those who "understand"!)
These are just my thoughts on the matter! ..spawned by a screenshot.

In hindsight the s5 plot makes me feel so :/ what if they used metaphors (cheating, first time) bc they'd never dare to make a real plot about those things? were we supposed to find it funny bc 'these two best friends are acting like a couple in which one of them cheated on the other, but their feelings are actually sooo platonic! isn't that hilarious??'

You're so brilliant! First time I see question about magic replied in such way, but you are totally right! The narrative about magic gone is prevalent about just anywhere, in any media or story, including lost Eden, lost Atlantis, Tolkien books etc etc. But you are right that it can't be lost! (I was not anon who asked)
Thank you for such a great message, I do feel like we have the narrative of everything ancient being lost to time but the source of it all has not been lost at all, we have what people back then used to have as well. We just ignore it and assume it's gone forever. I think as children, we pay much more attention to nature (or at least it's how my childhood was), and it's at that time of life that magic very much feels real. It's only when you turn your attention away that it feels gone.
Lately we have been looking away. But we can figure it out and look back.
