Hi sorry I've been dying. Finals are still happening. I'm also doing a short film and I'm writing this on set, so I may not be able to quote and really dissect it like I normally do.
The last two chapters were amazing. Dealing with the aftermaths of action and transitioning from one thing to another are my jam. It really tells you a lot about the characters and how they think and process emotion.
Both the reader and Bruce fucking RUN. Like they RUUUUUNNNN away from anything that makes them vulnerable. Like the reader initially not telling Bruce why she asked him to leave her behind, insisting to go to Gordon, then going to Lena. It already happened in the beginning but Marie's death really put her over the edge and she literally has not taken a moment to even BREATHE since (because pain no no).
What makes Bruce and the Reader different though is that Bruce would stop running if the reader asked him to. Also you could see that he's so used to the running he slows down a little bit more than the reader. The reader has literally never listened to Bruce 😭 the poor man—
The first time Alfred left them alone? I knew. Cupid. Alfred's having fun playing cupid. I'm here for it.
I think Lena's sus. I don't trust her AT ALL. Why? Can't really put a name on it. She opened up to the reader so fast and, I know the circumstances would make it plausible because 5 of her co-workers are dead, but still. I don't think she's straight up evil. But I do think someone on the other side has something over her. I could be wrong.
Alfred also absolutely KNOWS the reader was lying, but he also knows he can't do anything about it. He's learned from handling Bruce for so long. All he can do is be there. HE STILL NEEDS A HUG.
And back to what I was talking about earlier, the reader running. She finally told Bruce the reason why she told him to leave him behind and literally FLEED THE SCENE. Bruce being more worried about her going to the Lounge than the information. He's literally taking in the moment and breathing (a rarity, I'm proud of him) because of the reader, but she isn't doing the same. I feel so bad for him right now.
Of course, I'm not mad about it. She's traumatized and going through everything. And she isn't used to it like Bruce is, so she's trying to figure out how to cope. She's evidently, at this point in the story, not ready to be with anyone because she's terrified at the idea of getting hurt so she won't wanna be vulnerable just yet. But she's trying. We appreciate that.
⌨️
***CH 22 SPOILERS***
Hope you do well on your finals!! Also, how cool to be doing a short film!! Good luck on that too ❤️🥰
The reader & Bruce definitely do not have healthy coping mechanisms. Talking about emotions? Being vulnerable? Taking time to process? Never heard of it. But yes poor Bruce, she never listens to him about anything ever 😂 I like to think of it as karma for all the times he never listened to Alfred.
Alfred is 100% having fun playing cupid. He's taking a more subtle approach though because I think he really knows Bruce runs from emotions/ emotional vulnerability, so Alfred is playing the long game (she says as if she isn't the writer and doesn't make these decisions 😂) But yes Alfred does need a huge. As another anon put it, he has to deal with "two chaotic dumbasses" now
Thanks for the response even though you're busy!! It really means a lot. Again, good luck with everything!! Hope it all goes well! ❤️ Sorry my response isn't longer because I'm both still scared of accidentally spoiling and also still a little sick so my brain is not at 100% 🥵

DOES HE THINK GRACE IS BATMAN'S SECRET LOVE CHILD??? 😭😭😭 this au made my day i can't stop smiling and laughing
The amount of potential this AU has is brilliant, I love it ❤️
But yes, it crosses his mind at one point because Batman and Grace have the same eyes. But that only makes him feel even more stupid years later because Grace has Bruce's eyes. It just hits him at once and he wonders how he didn't see it.
Y/N has to assure him that it's an easy mistake to make; Batman and Bruce are pretty much two different people in the ways they act and everything. But she's also low key offended he thought she would cheat on Bruce. She tells him this at dinner with the others present and he comes clean about what he heard them talking about years earlier.
That then puts Y/N and Bruce in a touch spot because they then have to explain to their gaggle of kids that their marriage was a sham and it took them both almost dying to realise how much they actually loved each other. The kids obviously have a thousand questions about this, and Alfred takes great amusement from Y/N and Bruce's stuttered answers, remembering just how frustrating it had been for him when they were still pretending.

oh my goodness. you mentioned Wilde in the tags in the thing you reposted about people with niche information and i went this is my time to shine.
Oscar Wilde by Katherine Worth and A preface to Oscar Wilde by Anne Varty are both great overviews that also go into quite a bit of detail about his specific works.
also, Wilde's non fiction works and essays are also really great reads to get more understanding of his fiction, i've read Soul of Man Under Socialism and De Profundis; this is a link to a website with a lot of his works including these: https://www.wilde-online.info/essays-and-lectures.htm
(btw, if you ever have a feeling Wilde was influenced by someone but you're not quite sure, look for their name in either of those texts - they all namedrop about fifty people. i don't know if you need to write about Wilde but i've found those super useful for evidencing links and showing influence of other authors on his ideas)
speaking of De Profundis, this blog post is a really interesting one looking at Wilde's love of and use of mythology in his works.
there's also a novel called Green Carnations by Robert Hichens which I've heard is a really great fictional/satirical story inspired by Wilde's life and relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas.
and finally, here are some JSTOR articles i have saved which you may found interesting
https://doi.org/10.2307/372764 - Richard Foster, goes into a lot of the nuances of Importance of Being Earnest, specifically how Wilde uses and changes literary conventions in his comedies (i found this super useful bc with his comedies, you can always kind of tell that he's playing around with ideas but i find it really easy to oversimplify things so i liked the detail in this analysis)
https://www.jstor.org/stable/45269274 - Nils Clausson, looks at the symbolism in his poem The Sphinx which is just generally one of my favourites
https://www.jstor.org/stable/40754628 - John Allen Quintus, looks more broadly at Wilde's place in the aestheticism movement and ideas of morals in his works
(btw i do believe you need a jstor subscription to access these - let me know if you can't access them and i can send you them another way)
anyway, apologies for the long ask, i'm way too excited to talk about Wilde at a moment's notice, but i hope those are helpful and interesting!!
Oh my goodness thank you so so much for the detailed answer this made me so happy😭❤️
I took a course on Oscar Wilde (this summer) and kind of fell in love (not that I didn't after reading Dorian Gray but still). I also sort of knew he wrote a lot and honestly two months is hardly enough :')
I really adore his prose and essays <3 (I've read Dorian Gray, De Profundis, "The Picture of Mr. W.H" and "The Decay of Lying"). I was rather sad he didn't write as much prose in fiction, but I'll definitely have to check out Soul of Man under Socialism! I've heard of it but I hadn’t had the time (or at times energy) to check it out yet. And of course all those other essays too, I rather like approaching his works through a theoretical/philosophical angle
And thank you for the blog on De Profundis, and the jstor articles, I will dig into them when I can :3. And yess, it's so easy to simplify works like The Importance of Being Earnest, and honestly I felt that I did so too on first reading. But my professor approached the work through an angle of his characters rejecting skepticism regarding the question of personal identity, which was a concern through many of his works (especially quite a few plays I have read) and instead looking for what they personally felt to be truth and such (I argued and felt in my paper for the course lol) allowed a comic and complete ending for all the characters :)
And I do have a jstor account! If I can't access them, I'll just try through my uni library agsjsk.
And please no worries! I love talking about these things ❤️❤️ I'm so happy to be recommended some papers to read because honestly I have no idea where to even begin in that sector haha

Okay but if you’re into Paul Dano, may I recommend BBC’s War and Peace??? He plays Pierre (literally canonically described in the book as a bear of a man/stout — so he’s dad bod material) His character is *mwah* chefs kiss. Very troubled, very awkward/shy, clumsy af. Oh, and he falls in love with the young, beautiful Natasha. There’s also a good ass musical literally all about him if you’re into his character. It’s called Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.❤️
I like how one of your selling points is that he plays a dad bod inspired character tbh. Am I so transparent? 😭😭😭😭😂😂
Honestly tho.... I've been wanting to read the actual book, but I'm weak and can't commit to novels like I used to 😭 I did look up the little series tho and sksksksk 👀👀
If this is anything like how they did Agatha Christie's "And Then There Where None", I have no doubt it's amazing 😭 hnggggg y'all know how I am with watch shows and movies tho, the Alfred Molina Stan's are still waiting for me to watch Chocolat. That or, they've given up lmaooo
Idk tho, we'll see!! Maybe I'll look into it 👀 Thanks for the recommendation!

hi bestie! loved this chapter as always!!
alfred including the reader as a person he loved awww 🥺
the TENSION between her and bruce omg! i love how affected he is by her. like,, “‘Just–whenever you touch me–‘ He inhaled shakily.” goodbye i need them to make out RIGHT NOW (although tbh i love the way it was teased and gordon came in right then. we love a good slow burn!!)
i was so excited when i read the sentence “She had forgotten that it was the middle of the night.” hehe ☺️ i love noticing it in motn!
Y/N HAVING TO ADMIT TO GORDON THAT SHE’D BEEN SLEEPING IN BRUCE’S ROOM AKSKSJSLS I LOVE IT and her thought, “At least he has a fancy lawyer on speed dial” was so funny to me (as someone who absolutely does not have a fancy lawyer on speed dial these would be my thoughts too LOL)
“ “You know, Gordon said he thinks Batman has a soft spot for me.” She meant it to be teasing, but Bruce’s face went abruptly serious. “He does,” he said in a low voice. Stepped closer to her. “
KCOSJSOCJLSNDLSJS SHELBY THIS ^ IS SO 😳 i have no words. my hands were like shaking when i read that wtf i love the tension between them so much. 😭 but also i need them to make out soon. 🫢 ALFRED probably being like oh shit oops about the fact that he interrupted that HAHA
also i just wanted to say that every line you have gordon speak sounds very very in character!! the “I really do need to get your statement,” and later the “Uh…thanks, man,” are just exactly the way jeffrey wright’s gordon’s lines were written in the batman and i appreciate the accuracy!!
i love the way she teases bruce aw i’ve said it before but i just adore their banter!! also bruce’s protectiveness coming out (for like the millionth time) when she says she’s going to meet lena 🥺 and immediately when she mentions the hypothetical idea of going back to the iceberg lounge!! i love protective bruce!
bruce asking if she trusts lena… i really really hope this isn’t foreshadowing 🥺
“Good thing she knew a billionaire who could get them in.” HELL YES GALA SCENE I’M SO EXCITED
and ok ok not necessarily just for this chapter (although it does fit for it imo!) but the song Friends by Ed Sheeran!!!!! it’s them!
anyway, i am so looking forward to your sequel (and the rest of motn ofc)! happy monday!! 💓
🖤
***CH 24 SPOILERS***
Hi bestie!! Thanks for the message 🥰❤️
So glad you're enjoying the tension and slow burn! Sometimes I wonder if it's too slow buuuut I still wouldn't change it 😂
I love throwing in references to the title because it's my favorite thing to find when reading!! It always makes me so happy when people notice/ when people get excited to see it. And thankfully this title allows for me to throw it in there constantly 😂
Poor awkward Gordon, he's just like "please no details." Also, what a huge compliment that you think I captured Jeffrey Wright's version well!!! 🥺 that makes me so happy.
And yes Alfred 100% was like oh shit when he accidentally interrupted. Like he's been trying to get them together and then interrupt them?! Poor guy.
Their banter & protective Bruce are two of my all time favorite things to write in this fic. I love when Bruce gets so protective he gets mad. I love it. I hope the Batman 2 explores that more.
That song!!! The lyrics are perfect for them! "Friends just sleep in another bed" & "your eyes'll lead me straight back home" in particular. Thanks for always sending me songs bestie I love it and can't get enough of it 🥺
Happy Tuesday (since this is when I'm answering)! Can't wait to share the rest of the fic & the sequel with everyone ❤️

LOVED chapter 25!!! this’ll probably be short because today and yesterday have been crazy busy with finals and work but i HAD to send something in because i loved this chapter so much.
i love that she called about the gala HAHA and omg shelby THANK YOU FOR MORE SUGAR DADDY BRUCE WAYNE 😭
the scene with her mom 🥺 so heartbreaking but so beautiful– i literally cried (might’ve been pms related but hey it still made me cry!)
i loved her conversation with alfred too!! i tbh love their relationship in motn
ok listen… the fact that bruce was going to beat up/interrogate/whatever maxwell… so good… we hate that asshole
I LOVE WHEN SHE DRIVES THE BATMOBILE YAY i remember when you said she would drive it again in a future chapter 🥰 i love it! she’s so badass
i love how protective both she and bruce are about people they care about (obviously each other and also alfred, but the girls at the club too!) “Lena said he’d hit one of the other girls.” being her thought right before she decides to drive the car towards maxwell is just perfect. it shows how much she cares about them (even if she isn’t close with all of them)
all the things she says in this chapter about how she’s going to leave though… HEARTBREAKING (even though i love the angst) i just need bruce to confess to her that he loves her and tell her to stay and that they’ll be fine 😭
and ok tbh reader’s thoughts on the situation with bruce and stuff in this chapter made me think of Sorry by Halsey 🥺🥲
i’m so excited for the next chapter! i literally think about this fic all the fucking time! it really gets me through my day sometimes so thank you!! 😅
🖤
Sorry it took a while to answer!! Hope your finals have been going well ❤️
I love sugar daddy Bruce, who am I kidding. We all want to be taken care of by a hot angsty emo billionaire!
I love that the scene made you cry, but only because it made me emotional writing it! My mom is very much alive and amazing, and I tapped into our own closeness for that scene which just...oof 🥵 So I'm glad some of that emotion came across!
Alfred is stealing the show I swear! I've really been thinking about his inner monologue in a lot of these scenes and want to write blurbs 😂
Their protectiveness is definitely one of their similarities I really wanted to play into--so glad you noticed that line about Maxwell hitting the girl!
As for the angst....I can't help it! I say it frequently but I love angst too much 😅 sorry!
Speaking of sorry--oof! That song! Definitely portrays her feelings really well in this chapter. And probably Bruce has these feelings too! (He does, I wrote him that way 😂)
Speaking of songs I would love for people to send slow dancing song suggestions for the gala! 👀 I have a song I listened to when writing but it's instrumental.
New chapter coming within a couple of hours! ❤️🥰
