this is funny because i do really believe in every ship ever, my fav is gwen x arthur x merlin i think they should live together in a cottage in the woods and be happy forever. and i think every ship that includes merlin is valid and real (merlin x lancelot, merlin x gawaine, arthur x merlin and so on) and i love, love love love morgana and gwen, a bit less in later seasons

Did Merlin need to tell Morgana that he had magic too?

This question always bugs me. And it is true that I have written some stuff about it.. But it's been a year since I studied Merlin x Morgana dynamics. There's always countless ways to answer it, so many things to consider, so many issues both personal and political that have to be reviewed.

Do we go the pro-Morgana route and immediately say "Yes he should have been helping her in every way that was justified?"

or do we go the Pro-Merlin route and value his self-preservation more than anything else and straight up say "No, he didn't have to, that wasn't his job"?

And at this 1 year checkpoint I want to review myself.

At the very least, Merlin needed political backing for his cause very very badly. He had a job and a life mission, which was to bring freedom to his people using a specific trajectory (arthur). However, At s1-s2 Only Morgana was the nobility in the right position to accept and countercheck his views on magic. It's a risky move, true. He's been told that she was going to go evil and be more dangerous, true. She might revealed him to be the sorcerer way too early, true ...But if Merlin really needed to get a move on in his grand scheme, telling her and working with her was the only practical option to get his movement actually off the ground.

They were already friends. She trusted him more than anyone else. She was the prime person who would have understood. They already were indebted to each other. I mean, what more could you ask for in an ally?

If that means him being exposed to rebels like Alvarr, Tauren, Morgause or Mordred, wouldn't it have been better in the long run? His actions would have been in constant review and scrutiny by actual suffering AND Fighting members of the magic folk. If Merlin was destined to help rule them all then he needed critics, he needed social pressure from the other magicfolk too. Morgana was the right bridge for him, magic and Camelot. She was the best point of diplomacy anyone could have ever had. This would have made Merlin step up to a better diplomat/representative role as the face of his sect too.

I am not saying that he throw caution into the wind and immediately assist the rebels do atrocities, no. But it would have put Merlin in a position of learning and understanding on why rebellion/revolution/arms struggle was the only option left for so many of them, and that simply waiting for Arthur to become king someday will always receive heavy amounts of backlash from other magic sects and important magic people. Merlin needed to understand the reality of his people living on the ground and how it matches with the thing he was fighting for.

To me, ultimately, it's a check-and-balance thing.

Merlin had to be kept in check, just as Morgana had to be kept in check. That's what they should have been for each other. That's why the truth was important and valuable in the series. That's why it was wielded by Merlin as a weapon. That's why Morgana chased after it.

"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"

"Who watches the watchmen?"

Yes. Merlin owed Morgana the truth. For the sanity and survival of all and himself, then he should have risked it.

Okay so I actually didn’t rememberd much about Vivian not under the spell so i went to watch this episode (as you can see from post i rebloged before answering xD). And i’m responding from my laptop now bc i’m still scrolling through ‘merlin 2x10′ tag at my phone.

LADY VIVIAN AND LEON. LADY VIVIAN AND LEON! Oh yeah this one. Definitely this one. With how she is annoying at the beginning of the episode he could be annoyed not only with knights at the daily basic but with her too. Absolutely amazing. I know he deserves a break from what he already has at his plate but we don’t have this in this fandom, oh we so don’t have it. And I’m so suprised by this ship and by how well they fit in my head.

But. We hear more than once in this episode that she is too young. For love and for knowing antyhing about it. So yeah, few years older Vivian, more mature, not so rude but still annoying. Perfect paring with Leon. You know hate-love relationship.

With Morgana this will work too. But this one from before she got evil not after.

Morgana and Leon? No, noooo, absolutely no.

Morgana and Lancelot? Which Morgana? Good one? Evil one? That’s hot. Not like Evil Gwen x Evil Lancelot hot, but hot too. They didin’t actually have any relation before 4x09 so i think exploring that with any of the combination could be interesting. (It’s still #gayrights for my boy at the top of the podium, with Gwencelot (any combination) at second, but yeah he and Morgana - they can have and definitley are 3rd place).

Vivian and Sophia. Well Sophia was charming and putting away her manipulating her father i really liked the girl. This could work good too. Ya know by now #gayrights :D

    (Y/N) let out a pained shout as she was shoved onto the cold stone floor of a cell. The door slammed behind her as she whimpered, pain shooting out through her entire body. Using her elbows, she slowly got to her knees, tears slipping down her cheeks when she looked up.

    Morgana and Morgause both lingered at her door, the former closer to it than her half-sister.

    Her eyes were dark, almost blank, as she stared upon the pitiful prisoner, a girl who had once been her closest friend. Meanwhile, Morgause watched spitefully, squinting as she observed (Y/N).

    “Another unfortunate casualty,” she hummed. “Come, sister. It’s time for you to take your place on the throne of Camelot.”

    (Y/N) stumbled to her feet as the witch began to turn away. She reached through the bars of the cell door with the desperation of a dying man, gripping the sleeve of Morgana’s dress.

    “Don’t do this, Morgana,” she begged.

    Morgana frowned. “Why shouldn’t I? It’s everything Uther deserves. You said that once.”

    “I said he deserved to pay for what he did,” she admitted, “But not like this. Not through violence and death and suffering. He doesn’t deserve this-- Arthur doesn’t deserve this.”

    “Don’t bring him into this,” she spat.

    (Y/N)’s heart broke a little. “But he’s already part of it, isn’t he? You blame him for the crimes of his father, for Uther’s crimes against you and your kind.”

    From behind her sister, Morgause began to fume. “Best watch your mouth.”

    “Morgana, this was not Arthur’s choice,” (Y/N) said, ignoring Morgause. “He loves you like a sister, he would never--”

    “Do not speak to me of how Arthur loves me,” Morgana growled.

    She took (Y/N)’s wrist suddenly, ripping it from her dress. Nails digging into the girl’s skin, she threw her backwards into her cell again, sending her tumbling to the floor. From far off, a few imprisoned nights shouted at her to stop. They were all found of the serving girl, as Morgana had once been.

    Morgause smirked proudly, walking away and leaving her sister to do the same. Just as Morgana was about to depart, (Y/N)’s quiet voice stopped her.

    “You said you loved me once,” she whispered, making her stop cold in her tracks. “You said you’d put aside the hatred and the vengeance if it meant you had me.”

    “I was different then,” Morgana muttered, her voice less fire and more poison now.

    (Y/N) sniffed, wiping at her face. “You were. You were sweet and kind. Not a day went by that I didn’t see it in you. What happened, Morgana?”

    “Nothing happened,” was her reply. “I just decided to change things.”

    “And you can change them again!” (Y/N) spoke desperately, sitting up from the ground. “You can change things. You can come home and we can go back to the way it was. This time, you and Arthur can stop Uther. You can change things.”

    Morgana was silent for a moment, almost considering her words.

    Morgause sauntered in again, a devilish smirk upon her expression. “Coming, sister? We have a kingdom to take, after all.”

    “Of course,” Morgana said instantly, echoing her sister’s tone.

    She left the dungeon without a second glance at (Y/N), who burst into tears the moment she was gone.

    “You can’t save her, (Y/N). No one can.”

    “I refuse to believe that, Merlin. If anyone can save her, it’s me. And I’m going to try until it damn well kills me! Because I won’t abandon her-- not now, not ever.”

    It was close to midnight that same evening when the dungeon was opened again. All the nights lay asleep in their cells, but (Y/N) had yet to slumber. She was just beginning to drift off into a dream world when a quiet voice broke through her drowsiness.

    “(Y/N), (Y/N), wake up.”

    The servant girl jumped awake, flinching so hard that she sat up off the ground and whirled around to face whoever startled her. Much to her surprise, and perhaps fear, Morgana stood there, clothed in a red cloak and robes befitting a peasant.

    “Morgana?” (Y/N) whispered, almost shrinking back farther into her cell. “You came back.”

    The sparkle in the sorceress’s eyes died a little. “Did you really think I’d leave you here?”

    “I’d...considered it,” she admitted with a mumble. She then clambered to her feet and met Morgana at the cell door, glancing about to spot any lurking guards. “Was it all fake then? You, working with Morgause?”

    There was a change in Morgana’s expression, a flicker of regret passing her features.

    “I--” she began to defend herself, but stopped. “I’ve made a mistake. I don’t know how to fix it.”

    “Oh, Morgana,” (Y/N) muttered fondly.

    Shocking both herself and the former lady of Camelot, she reached a gentle hand through the cell door, placing it against Morgana’s cheek. Her skin was cold, but Morgana felt nothing but warmth and comfort.

    “How do I fix this, (Y/N)?” She begged.

    Had Uther been there to hear her, he would’ve shamed her for doing such a thing. A lady did not beg, nor did a traitor. Luckily, (Y/N) was not Uther. She would never be.

    “I want to fix this,” Morgana said again. “I’ve made a horrible, horrible mistake, I know. I never wanted this.”

    (Y/N) smiled sadly. “What did you want, Morgana?”

    “I wanted…” She hesitated, but a tiny smile broke out on her face. “I wanted you. Just me and you against the world, against Uther. I thought this was the way to get that, but I know better now.”

    “In that case--” (Y/N) began, grinning.

    She pressed herself closely to the cell door and, to the best of her ability, kissed her lady through the bars. It was a feeling she would never forget; the ice-cold lips of the Lady Morgana. It was a feeling reserved for her and her alone, for as long as she would live. Or at least, so she hoped.

    When the kiss ended, Morgana could not wipe the smile from her face. “How do I fix it, (Y/N)?”

    “You come home,” came the servant girl’s whisper. “You stop Morgause and you come home to Arthur, to Uther-- however you may hate him.”

    “And what of my magic?”

    (Y/N)’s fingers danced along her arm in a comforting gesture. “They don’t know of it, yet, do they?” When Morgana shook her head, she smiled. “Then that’s a problem for another day. We’ll find a way to stop Uther and save your people-- but we’re going to do it together.”

    Morgana kissed her again, sweeter and softer this time.

    It was a promise, a sort of promise; one that she meant to keep. It was a promise to love, to hold, and to protect, even if it meant the death of her.

    The sorceress nodded slowly, a kiss still lingering on her lips. “Together.”

I really love how creative magic folk are at naming things. “We have this cup that brings people back to life, but what to call it?” – “How about ‘The Cup of Life’?” – “That’s fucking genius. Why didn’t I think of that?”

Weirdly, Uther’s fears in this episode end up being somewhat justified? But, like, in a self-fulfilling prophecy kind of way.

It’s really great that we keep getting invited to Gaius and Merlin’s exposition dinners or I would have no clue what’s going on

Arthur: “I will bring only my most trusted men.” – cut to Merlin helping Arthur pack for the quest that they are going on alone

Arthur: “You will be ready by sunrise won’t you, Merlin?” – Merlin: “If I don’t know where we’re going, how will I know what to pack? Willitbehotwillitbecoldwillitbewetwillitbedry?”

Merlin joking that if Arthur told him where they were going, he’d have to kill him and Arthur’s completely deadpan delivery of “Immediately and without hesitation.”

Morgana’s eyeliner is particularly dark this episode – a clear indication that the evil is strong with her

Sometimes Morgause does her creepy whisper thing, other times she arrives with the tinkling of chimes. How does Morgana ever know when to expect her?

Look, I may not approve of how they’re bonding, but I’m glad Morgana is getting to bond with her sister. They always look so happy after cooking up an evil scheme together

Oh Cenred, your wig was such a disaster, but you’re played by Tom Ellis so I love you anyway

Cenred, quit while you’re ahead, bro. You’re trying to sleep with one whole lesbian.

Oh man, Merthur banter on horseback while on a quest is the best kind of banter

Arthur being like “maybe this time we won’t have any problems” and immediately getting hit in the neck with a blow-dart is at least 90% of what the show is about

Merlin’s absolute delight at seeing Gwaine and how Gwaine immediately starts flirting with Merlin

*makes mental note to find more Arthur/Merlin/Gwaine fanfiction because their dynamic is so great*

The immediate fear on Arthur’s face when Merlin is chosen to fight the champion and how he volunteers to take his place (even though the champion is Gwaine and the chances of Gwaine doing anything to hurt Merlin are nonexistent)

It’s a testament to how powerful Morgause is that Cenred, a medieval king with riches and power at his disposal, as well as a probable lack of regard for the agency of women, looks super sheepish when she yells at him for losing Arthur

Cenred: “Are you threatening me?” – Morgause: “Trust me, Cenred. When I’m threatening you, you’ll know about it.”

The rules of the fight are simple: one man lives and one man dies. You just know 100% Gwaine would have sacrificed himself to save Merlin. Merlin would have never let that happen of course, but the thought would have been there

As usual, it’s Merlin who comes to his own (and everyone else’s) rescue

Arthur tells Gwaine all cagey-like that they’re on a quest and Merlin immediately pipes up cheerfully “we’re looking for the Cup of Life”, because of course he does. It’s Gwaine they’re talking to. He doesn’t keep secrets from Gwaine

EXCEPT FOR THE ONE THAT GWAINE WOULD HAVE BEEN 100% COMPLETELY COOL WITH

YOU KNOW, THE BIG ONE

(Not that I’m still salty or anything)

Listen, the amount of posturing between Gwaine and Arthur whenever they’re together is fucking delightful, particularly in this episode where they’re bickering about who’s better with their sword. And I love how Merlin has no time for it because as per the usual, he was the one that got them out of the situation

I love how the Druids are always framed as the polar opposite to Uther and how every time Arthur encounters them, his mind is changed about magic just a bit

This whole show could have been solved if Arthur had spent a year with the Druids at some point is what I’m saying

Merlin: “I don’t hear anything.” – Arthur: “Exactly.” – Gwaine: “Never satisfied, you city types. ‘It’s too noisy. It’s too quiet.’”

I need to find or write more stories where Gwaine is from a farm in the middle of nowhere. I forget sometimes that he’s a country mouse

As Merlin watches the Cup tumble away down the hill, he realises that it would be fucking great to have a spell that summons things back to you. He spends the next several decades developing the spell “Accio”

Merlin covering an injured and poisoned Arthur with his jacket, even though he’s basically skin and bones and will probably freeze to death without it

I mean, think about it. How often do you see Merlin not wearing his jacket – even when Arthur isn’t wearing a jacket and has his sleeves rolled up? Merlin’s always cold, change my mind

Oh man, Morgana is so twisted playing with Uther’s emotions. I love her so much

The way Gwaine teases Merlin before acquiescing his request to go get firewood (so that Merlin can use magic to heal Arthur while he’s gone) is so cute, but should never have happened because Merlin could have just FUCKING HEALED ARTHUR IN FRONT OF GWAINE. LIKE GWAINE WOULD HAVE GIVEN TWO SHITS. HE’S NOT EVEN FROM CAMELOT GODDAMMIT

And then Morgause straight up kills Cenred because if her sister’s going to have a kingdom, she may as well have one too

Gaius talks about them having a traitor in their midst and even as he says it, Morgana doesn’t hide her self-satisfied smirk. Power move

Morgana has no reason to hide her true intentions from Gwen anymore and so offers her the chance to survive and be a part of her new Camelot, and Gwen, being the wise, resourceful woman she is, pledges loyalty to Morgana because it’s the only smart move at that point

Listen, Morgana still deeply cares about Gwen. She looks so happy when it looks like Gwen will be on her side. She just cares about power more

Okay so it seems that Elyan has been in Camelot the whole time. So where the hell was he a few episodes ago when Gwen was about to be executed??

Merlin ordering Arthur around because he needs treatment is both hilarious and the sweetest

Gaius’ relief at seeing Merlin again is so lovely. He’s always happy to see his boy safe and sound

This motherfucking vial of Avalon water is going to be squandered in the next episode and I’m still mad

Arthur sends Gaius, Gwaine and Elyan to the woods outside of Camelot and tells Merlin he should go with them instead of going to look for Uther with him and Merlin’s response is “Nah, I’ve seen the woods already”. HOW CUTE??

Also, Arthur’s look of relief that Merlin will be with him is so pure

Also also, how Merlin keeps checking on the still injured Arthur every five seconds because he’s so worried about him

For the longest time I had Solrock on his team. But I was never 100% comfortable with it because as the Maiden’s Knight I wanted to give Gawain only female Pokémon and Solrock is genderless (I also thought about giving him Braviary but Braviary can only be male). But luckily for me I looked up the Pokémon Species Type (for different reasons) and we have 4 sun/ne Pokémon (which doesn’t include Solrock).

Gringolet, Gawain’s horse has his own Wikipedia article. Not even Owain’s lion has that! Also Gawain’s Scottish, so unicorn. I was debating between Rapidash and Musdale because Gawain does have a story including a donkey. But Musdale is a working horse and Gawain is a knight. Rapidash feels more knightly.

Ponyta was Gawain’s first Pokémon. Gawain had found her in the field grassing. Slowly, the young (let’s say 5) Gawain would go closer to Ponyta every day. He would leave berries for her hoping she would come to him. Ponyta got spooked the few first times but sensing Gawain was kind, she let him come closer. Eventually, she came to Gawain. Once, Gawain tried to pet her, which surprised Ponyta and Gawain got burned. Gawain learned his lesson and the next time, he asked Ponyta’s permission to pet her. She gave him permission.

Neither one of them noticed when Ponyta left the fields and started to sleep in the stables with Gawain, but it didn’t matter. They were each other’s. (I’m going to make Gawain working at the stables for the Pope, ‘cause why not.)

Ponyta and young Gawain worked together and went on adventure together, both loving to explore. With Ponyta, Gawain was able to go places faster and help people. Classic knight errant stuff, but as a preteen.

Ponyta evolved into Rapidash during a joust. Gawain wanted to impress his uncle. Gawain was actually doing very well. He makes it to the end! And he was against a knight on a Rhyhorn. They would have lost if Ponyta didn’t evolve into Rapidash and won them the joust (Yes I am imagining that scene in the anime where Ash riding a Ponyta evolves into a Rapidash.)

The only time Rapidash goes into her pokéball is when Gawain is outside in the rain. But usually she hates her pokéball. Sometimes Gawain more time on her then he does walking.

Her moveset is Stomp, Fire Blitz, Megahorn and Poison Jab.

The Ralts line is partly based on knights. Why Gardevoir and not Gallade? Gallade cannot be female. (Also Gallade works with Guinevere.)

During his explorations, young Gawain and Ponyta found a Ralts in need of help. She was being attacked by a Ferroseed. She was locked into place unable to teleport. Ponyta used ember and the Ferroseed ran away. Gawain brings Ralts “home” aka still the stables in Rome. (Now I’m imagining them using Ralts during mass, it’s adorable in my mind.) Ralts becomes Gawain’s main battler. They sadly lost their first Little Cup tournament. But both of them worked hard and they won their next tournament using confusion!

She evolved into a Kirlia during a tournament, which because she evolved, Gawain was unable to use her. He lost the tournament.

Kirlia wasn’t just used for tournaments but in his adventures Gawain would often use her in battle and to help fight the wild Pokémon.

And in a reference to the Rise of Sir Gawain, Nephew of Arthur, she evolved into Gardevoir during the pirate battle. (I will never not think that’s cool.)

Gardevoir helped Gawain in negotiations when Arthur sent him away to talk with Arthur’s lords or neighbouring kings. Once when the negotiations were going bad, she created a black hole and scared a King in swearing his alliance to Arthur. (She’s still a fairy and they are mischievous.)

Gardevoir’s moveset is Moonblast, Psychic, Thunderbolt and Calm Mind.

When his character is not being butchered, Gawain is often a peace keeper. Leafeon is a piece keeper. Seriously, Platinum Pokédex: It basically does not fight. With cells similar to those of plants, it can perform photosynthesis. Also it gets stronger in the sun, like Gawain. And might be a reference to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, being green.

In the forest of Italy (because honestly it’s Arthuriana and the forest is magical and Pokémon has tons of Pokémon in the forest), while training Ralts, they found an Eevee sunbathing. Gawain decided to catch her. Eevee was more peaceful and she didn’t battle unless she had to. Though once a Surskit was bullying Ponyta, Ponyta kept trying to stomp on it but it wasn’t working. Eevee tackled the Surskit helping her friend.

In the Magical Forest of Adventure, Eevee had the nighttime munchies and found a mossy rock. Everyone was very surprised the next morning when Leafeon was sleeping with them. They blamed fairies.

Leafeon didn’t change much in personality. She is still very protective of her family and Gawain. Maybe some times a little to protective, getting revenge on people that wronged them.

Her moves are Leaf Blade, Sword Dance, X-Scissor and Synthesis.

Yes, based on both Mexican wrestlers and Aztec Eagle Warriors (seriously) doesn’t match a medieval knight, he is a hawk. And Gwalchmai may (there’s debate) mean Hawk of May.

After getting knighted Sir Gawain from the Pope, Gawain went back home to find his family. He met with Morgause and Lot and Agravaine and Gaheris and Soredamour. There was a family tradition when the child turn 13, they give them an egg of a flying type. Lot gave Gawain a Pokémon an egg, which hatched into a Hawlucha (I know Hawlucha is in the human-like egg group but magic was involved). Gardevoir and Leafeon were mainly her mothers. I’m also imagining Gawain and Hawlucha practicing fighting moves together. Gawain once wrestled Agravain and Gaheris at the same time using moves he learned from Hawlucha.

Hawlucha loved to tournaments. She made a septicle of the whole thing, which made her popular with the crowd as well. Though, sometimes she got into her own head and while showboating she got hit.

Her moveset is Sky Attack, Hi Jump Kick, Flying Press and Stone Edge.

Did you know Espeon is the Sun Pokémon? It also matches Mordred's Umbreon (spoilers).

Gawain was making a name for himself not just in the tournament scene but also in the adventure scene (sure he had a little hiccup with Owain/Morholt/Gawain maiden adventure but generally it was very positive). While on an adventure, Gawain slept with a woman who’s Vaporeon really liked Leafeon. Leafeon gave birth to two Eevees. Gawain kept one but gave the other to his little brother Mordred who was starting his Pokémon adventure. Eevee was easier to raise then Hawlucha for Leafeon. Eevee was always quick learning and loved to sleep with Gawain at night (which she kept doing after evolving). Some nights Gawain found her on his face sleeping (this did not continue after evolution).

Eevee evolved pretty quickly, like I said quick learning. On a bright day, resting from travel, Gawain was playing with Eevee. He threw a stick and the stick stopped in mid air. Having so much fun, Eevee evolved into an Espeon. (Basically the Eevees evolve in nontraditional ways.)

Espeon liked tournaments and showing off her precognition powers (blame it on Hawlucha’s influence).

Her moveset is Psychic, Shadow Ball, Toxic and Future Sight

Did you know that Volcarona is the Sun Pokémon? It’s partly based on sun spots.

Gawain heard about this magical Pokémon in ancient ruins. So, naturally it was adventure time (the theme of this post). He went to the ruins. It’s full of ghost and maybe a legendary? No, it was just a Volcarona. Not what was expected but still welcomed. There was a fight, where Gardevoir hits the final blow. It was as epic as any legendary battle.

After catching Volcarona, the ruins no longer caught fire randomly. So, the neighbouring town was very happy.

Volcarona like the Pokémon Dex entries say, she likes helping people and Pokémon. But, when angered, she is very dangerous.

Her moves are Fiery Dance, Bug Buzz, Quiver Dance and Heat Wave

As someone who likes Merlin x Morgana i feel like i am obliged to give my own two cents on the question: should Merlin have revealed his magic to her early on?

To me, he didn’t have to tbh.

Why?

A. Morgana already hates Uther. There were too many unpleasant secrets regarding her identity. Her upbringing made her vulnerable.

He had been told by the all his mentors not to trust her despite him wanting to do right by her. And regardless of whether he told Morgana about his magic or not, Morgana had long been resentful and distrustful of Uther herself due to the latter’s injustices. She was bound to betray the king one way or another. She was bound to meet and trust Morgause one way or another. She would still find out her true parentage. She would still have been manipulated by Morgause nonetheless. The fact that not only was Uther keeping major secrets from her, but Gaius, her primary physician, kept her drugged and ignorant, in time the truth will have had to come out and she will have still been rightfully outraged. Also at some point she would have had to know that she and Arthur were half-siblings.

B. She may root for Merlin but she was against the crown.

I do not believe for one second that had Merlin revealed his magic to her, she would have remained on the Pendragon’s side of their world (aka the "good guys”). Although She was little bit like Will, Gilli, Freya, who could convince Merlin to fight for himself and the magicfolk, Morgana also had the makings of characters such as Kara, Edwin, Nimueh and Sigan. These four tried to show Merlin a better/freer world but also went on to harm Gaius/Arthur, which became their death sentence.

As we can see, Morgana was theoretically located in between these two groups. That made trusting/joining her already very precarious for Merlin.

The real tipping point would have been Arthur. Morgana seemed to be influential enough to guide Arthur to follow his heart and go against Uther when it counted. In another world she would have convinced Arthur to take the throne for himself. As long as Arthur stayed alive, then Merlin would be on Morgana’s side. Gaius, who’s technically pro-Uther, can be still be convinced to the magicfolk’s side as long as the Camelot prince was safe.

C. The prophecy

The bigger problem though was that Morgana, from the beginning, has already been pegged as "designated dangerous potential enemy of the state” by both Kilgharrah and Gaius. Regardless of what she did, Merlin will always have that piece of info at the back of his head. No matter what Merlin did to prove them that Morgana isn’t like that, Gaius and Kilgharrah never stopped reminding him of her potential to "do evil” or go opposite of Merlin’s pathos. That kind of thing can mess up someone’s brain, especially powerful young men who had been thoroughly convinced that they will be the "light and savior” of his people some day in the future. His later actions and mindset is proof of the prophecy (and gaius’s philosophy) already having a profound effect on him.

There are really too many factors tbh. Merlin’s loyalty and focus was really pulled into so many directions, so many options. There was never an easy way for Merlin x Morgana to become satisfying.

Merlin’s biggest sin was really using Morgana’s unfailing trust on him against her when he poisoned her. They were friends. Morgana had wholeheartedly trusted, respected and admired him, even more than Arthur did.

Merlin didn’t need magic to earn Morgana’s complete trust and love. He didn’t need magic to lose it either... That was simple use of hemlock. The moment he chose to do that, to not give her a choice in death, to not tell Morgana of his plan, to not completely trust her just once, to betray her for the final time, even when he was counting on Morgause to lift the curse on her... that already set Morgana’s path to her hatred of him in motion.

Merlin’s fear, indecision, distrust, empathy caused him to make horrible yet very realistic decisions. He continuously backed himself into a corner until there was no one left who could root for Merlin himself, not the Emrys of destiny. His lack of clear ambitions or plans made him gullible and vulnerable of Gaius’ and Kilgharrah’s mind games. Out of options, he would have had to defend status quo as long as possible, to become a reactionary hero that relied on brute force and prodigious talents to subdue his "enemies”. He would be the natural adversary of people like Morgana, Morgause (and everyone else).

It’s fascinating. And it hurts.

How I feel about this character: I LOVE GWEN…every time anything bad happened to her i became utterly livid. the single time i unstanned arthur was in late season 4 after That Happened. not even my love for arthur would stand for that nonsense 

All the people I ship romantically with this character: oh man, like, everyone, anyone, as long as she’s happy…my favorite is gwen/morgana but i also really like gwen/lancehot, gwen/gwaine, gwen/merlin although i think they’re like…very good platonic friends who do romantic stuff together sometimes just cause. they’d be fine sharing arthur honestly they’re tight like that

My non-romantic OTP for this character: gwen & merlin!!!! as said above and in the other ask i think they’re in that weird space between platonic & romantic so they can go either way…

My unpopular opinion about this character: idk if it’s unpopular but someone should have known abt that enchanted bracelet or w/e. that was fucked up and it makes me really uncomfortable

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish gwen had been able to save morgana from herself because that’s love babey. like i would have been happy w/ any “”redemption”” arc at all from her (more on that later) but it would have been super special to me if gwen, the one person who never hurt her, was also the one person who could save her

How I feel about this character: oh boy. i feel she was horribly mistreated by the writers…she & merlin coulda been out here like magneto & professor x but instead they made her ~totally evulz~ which meant she was willing to hurt people like gwen & arthur who had (arguably in arthur’s case) never done her any real harm…i don’t like it. give that girl some fucking DEPTH, y’all were SO CLOSE…she could have been such an aesop character, the result of what blind hatred like uther’s brings…instead she just stood in as an ineffective villain for two and a half seasons and got dumped on constantly

My unpopular opinion about this character: i guess that i think she should have gotten a “redemption arc” i see so much “DIE MORGANA DIE” material on ao3 if it’s written post s4…although i will say after what she did to gwen in late s4 lowkey i was in that camp too. i know it’s not her fault but UGH

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i think “redemption arc” for morgana is the wrong term bc i don’t think per se that her pain is wrong or that she did anything wrong in acting the only way she knew how, as someone who would be killed by uther for what she was…she doesn’t need to MAKE UP for anything really…i guess “reconciliation arc” would be more appropriate…she was so miserable and alone and she used to be such good friends with everyone, i really wanted her to come thru the misery and be…not who she was before all of it went down, but someone who was able to move forward and become whole. instead she died broken and alone like everyone else in this stupid show

Merlin- my all time favorite character: Morgana. I really love her characterization in season1 and 2. Everything after that, I really try to see but the writing was really shit and I also did not care much for the show sadly.- a character that i didn't use to like but now do: uh....lancelot- a character that i used to like but now don't: Merlin (I hate him with intensity of a 1000 suns)- a character I'm indifferent about: all the knights. How much mergana is implied in the deleted scenes? I'm actually curious.

i don't think there was a lot of implied mergana per se. The deleted scenes mostly show moments of more fleshed out characterization

For example in s3, the merlin x morgana deleted scenes were:

merlin giving her flowers in her room, she accepts them but scowls in disgust after he leaves and closes the door

if im not mistaken the scene where merlin helps her get up after she fell from a horse coz of the snake he conjured was deleted too

in the 2nd takeover of camelot (with cenred if im not mistaken) arthur/cenred/morgause facing each other in the throne room was also deleted as well as the one where merlin dragged morgana through the caves in search of safety

in s4 the deleted scenes were mostly

Morgause and Morgana talking aboout how the Isle of the blessed used to be like and what it could be again morgana pondering in solitude and worry about her bracelet, her dreams and about emrys

where she felt pity for lancelot and

the one where agravaine expressed his desire for her and she fends him off.

in s5 the deleted scenes were

morgana explaining to mordred what she planned to do with emrys.

there was also the scene where arthur was like "what happened to morgana? i could have saved her" and merlin was like "it's not on you arthur, there were others better placed to help morgana." morgana and mordred in-depth conversations

the way i see it... they cut a lot of scenes which made arthur and morgana more human and less cartoonish.

Scenes where Arthur thought more about morgana or about magic were cut or incorporated into other scenes. Moments where Arthur looked smart or intuititve where cut. The one where he confided his thoughts to gwen was removed, the one where he thought about morgana was removed. Moments where he was actually kind to Merlin was cut. and etc. etc.

Scenes where morgana looked sad and contemplative were cut. Scenes where morgana and merlin fought it out with words were cut. Scenes of genuine concern between morgana and arthur were cut (esp in s3).

I'm gonna have to speculate here but I think, i really think that the producers tried so hard to make morgana as inhuman/wacky/unreasonable as much as possible. I think for them it was much simpler storytelling if she just smirked and glared her way thru s3-s5 instead showing her hurt, angry, sad, lonely and thinking deeply. That would have given morgana more nuance and made merlin look bad. They cant have merlin look accountable, regretful and worse than what he actually is and what he stands for, can't they?

tbh i'm also not a fan of overanalysing deleted scenes. They were deleted for a reason. While it is true that such scenes could have made the story more richer, at the end of the day, those were just ideas that they couldn't bring to the final product. So they're just that… deleted scenes have no real effect on the overall story, like a discarded WIP.

I have been pondering this myself for a few days now, especiallg with all the camelot x merlin shenanigans happening in my asks.

I like the Morgans I’ve seen so far. They all have qualities that make them the best in different categories.

Most accurate backstory and relationshit with merlin - Excalibur 1981 Morgana (Helen Mirren)

Best in becoming "loosest woman to ever live” - Starz Camelot Morgan (Eva Green)

Best in politics - Eva Green

Best sister/adversary to Arthur - for now Katie Mcgrath but I honestly think the Morgana from Mists of Avalon wins this even though I havent seen it.

Most compelling and logical backstory/reasons for war- Katie Mcgrath (coz her story deals with racial persecution and not just the "women=bad” narrative)

Best in fun shenanigans - Katie Mcgrath.

Katie’s is my fave adaptation coz she got to do all the really fun morgana stuff (minus the sex). Fun traditional Morgana stuff like:

Being really into fabrics

Loving apples

Necromancy

Healing/caretaker

Benevolent and smart

Loving Mordred

Acted as counsel to arthur for a time

Chasing after Merlin hungry for his knowledge, trust and also magic (first honestly then eventually in order to spurn him)

Sullying Guinevere’s honor/revealing gwencelot to arthur

Torturing and the unjust imprisonment of Guinevere and the knights for little reason

Loads of court intrigue

Takeover camelot more than once

Use old crone persona

Use birds for her plans

Healing people just to torture them again

Employinh other/younger girls to seduce knights and spy for her.

Build a community of loyalists sympathetic to her

Playing with Lancelot in a shtty manner

Taunting Gwaine

Having a lot of familiar arthurian allies working with her like morgause, agravaine and mordred

That self-righteousness and feminine fury

Her plans keep getting foiled so she comes up with even better more convuluted plans

Virtually unkillable (until that cop-out execution at the end of DotD)

Like i said before, i appreciate how they jampacked what little i know of legendary morgana into bbc’s adaptation.

Though i dont think this next part is faithful to traditional arthurian morgana, the tyranny part was a good bonus for me coz it’s very accurate to what radicalism/insurgency looks like irl. Plus with BBC Merlin’s premise, it really really works.

Imho The magic ban/persecution actually gave katie’s morgan le fay character more depth coz she now had more solid justification for the awful things that she does...compared to in the legends where it’s basically “morgan le fay retaliating really badly or exacting her sadistic brand of justice when she did not get what she wanted or when she was slighted.”

Also.... I just appreciate the dualistic nature of Katie’s Morgana the most. Katie played her hatred and rage with so much humanity, pain, loneliness, desperation and sadness. Hers is one of the coolest acting performances I have ever seen. (s5 especially)

Tbf tho she had been blessed with 5 seasons to really truly embody the essence of morgana from the legends (except all the sex and being an actual mom). Eva green was also good at this but with only one season given to her, eva green didnt get to play around as much as katie did.

The only thing that was missing was really katie’s morgana taking arthur’s body to avalon. (Mists!Morgana wins this one).

Thoughts on how Morgana, Morgause and Merlin killed people

i just realized that it was only in s5 where Morgana really truly absolutely did attempt to finally kill Merlin (not as emrys but as merlin.)

plus it wasnt even an act of revenge, eliminating him was just a necessary step in the destabilization plan to destroy Camelot

whereas merlin already tried to have her killed in fires of idirsholas to save camelot. that was in the first 3 years Merlin and Morgana knew each other btw.

therefore Morgana waited 5 years to finally decide that she has to kill merlin. think about that. Merlin did nothing but try to kill her over and over again, but Morgana didnt want him personally dead YET... for 5 YEARS. FIVE YEARS AFTER HE BETRAYED HER VERY PERSONALLY.

this brings home the point bruh. Morgana doesn't kill recklessly. Tears of Uther Pendragon and the Dorocha incidentwere NOT Morgana-led attacks because those were Morgause's plans. Morgana didnt want to unleash the Dorocha at first because she was afraid and also didnt want to lose her sister. Morgause persuaded her to do it regardless. SO Morgause is the one who plans to kill indiscriminately and just brings Morgana along for the ride.

Notice this, left on her own devices, Morgana's kills were strategic, even from a tyranny/warlord standpoint. If she had her way, she chooses who to kill and who to save for later. Morgana's not a frkn idiot. Her letting the soldiers target the fleeing city folk was to intimidate Leon and the other Knights and force them to submit. In the spirit of historical sieges YES. that was done. actually that was pretty merciful compared to what you read in history. Anyway back to the point. It forced Leon to surrender, which was the goal (tho he immediately defected, which is of course understandable)

How about Merlin, are his kills strategic? I dont think so. Merlin is a reactionary protector of the status quo superhero. Watch video below to understand the trope.

Merlin doesnt think of the consequences when he kills. I think he's more reckless tbh coz he doesnt discriminate either. He just kills as a reaction to danger in the spirit of self-defense. He gets pushed back into a corner and that's when he strikes. Thing is with Merlin is that you shouldn't trap him, because he will strike back like a dangerous wounded animal in defense of his "loved ones" (the government). As a supposed savior of the magic folk that's not really a healthy way to deal with threats, especially since he does nothing to actually not get forced in the trap anyway (ie reconnect with the magic folk at least, find stable alliances, negotiate, bargain, etc.) The problem though was that this turned him into a vigilante. Because he was eliminating treasonous threats without the state's knowledge or permission, that makes him a serious threat to social order himself.

He and Morgause are the "Damn the Consequences" kind of guys. The consequence of Merlin doing that was that he kept proving that he was no ally to the embittered magic folk. Morgause's actions also meant that she really didnt care if nobody lived to run the kingdom as long as she got to overtake it. (see her just killing Cenred)

Morgana, for the most part wasn't like that. Morgana weighed the effect of her kills more than you think. Morgana frkn doesnt kill her own allies right away(unlike morgause). What she does really well is "breaking her adversary's morale." That takes skill and careful maneuvering and planning. Killing is the last resort for Morgana and she doesn't usually take it, especially if she sees value in keeping someone alive. Her "Damn the Consequences" attitude would have taken effect more on the long-term aspects: open riots and insurrections.

It was only after Mordred died that Morgana finally killed every little threat to her life. She has gone mad at this point. She's become the wounded animal. (like merlin)

anyway this is a long essay on how merlin x morgause x morgana killed people.
