I love that I spent more time thinking about the politics of the world I'm creating than about the magic creatures and magical system
And guess which one is more important to the plot?
You guessed it, the magic creatures and the magic, politics are just a subplot and I wanna kill myself

I kind of want to throw my entire novel concept out the window because I dislike world-building.

Do not tag my original art with your ocs or fandom tags, I find it extremely offensive and dismissive of the time and work I put into my art.

I hate that in the popular vision of biopunk, "biological machines" and biotech look like gross body horror nonsensical pieces of crap with no rhyme or reason

(bioforges from Orion's Arm)
When the most efficient "biomachines" we know, able to turn mere air water and sunlight into all sorts of useful products, look like this:

Notes on food, fish, and translation errors.
Hán and Ankiusk are good friends, but during the time that they’re getting their medical certifications they’re both still learning the Galactic Standardized language. That combined with Ankiusk’s lack of a jaw to make the click (!) letter, there are a lot of communication issues.
And I mean… what do you call an alien animal in an alien language so that a third alien can relate it to yet another alien animal. Language may be evil but comparative xenobiology is even more so.

Hot take: bond marks (as commonly seen in the literature) are a little bogus. What do you mean bonding should be exclusively for mates? Why can’t I bond with my best friends instead? Does it really need to be romantic? What do you mean it’s a permanent scar??
Granted, I do love all those tropes a lot; they hit a really deep soft spot for me. And lots of new work nowadays are redefining how bonding works! I guess I just wanna keep that conversation open

I love that Calamity introduces us to the city of Avalir as like the epitome of a wonderful advanced civilization in an age of opulence and yet towards the end of episode one so much about what the city represents feels so hollow. Yes the city is still beautiful and far ahead of anything that we have seen in any of the three main campaigns but it’s really small things like they can’t grow real flowers in their gardens or the people experience weather for a very short period of their entire lives
Even the people themselves (at least those in higher society) have such extreme contempt for people who worship and champion the gods. I cringed during the entire scene when Purvan was present at the gala and he was turned into a spectacle of how quaint and backwards people who don’t live on Avalir are and was being mocked because of his status as Champion of the Raven Queen and no one even gave a shit if they were rude to this one man who was just doing his job because they wanted to have a dick measuring contest against a goddess who frankly has more important things to do than appease the whimsies of vapid mortals
Really it’s like what Brennan and Travis say at the beginning of the episode: it’s a beautiful day in Avalir but not on the inside

Nakey version and Lore below the cut in case people dont like alien boobs
Tumblr media
"Humans* were a bipedal species that rose from the depths of the glacial caverns to colonise the surface of their frozen world. Their ancestors had splayed feet for the snow and horizontal pupils for scanning the ice sheets, lined by dark markings to protect their eyes from the glare of the light scattered everywhere. Like most ancient fauna, they were typically dark in color to shield against the ultraviolet rays of their unstable sun.
Human hair evolved from sensory tentacles that helped navigate the underground, covered in bioluminescent photophores to signal to companions. It's not uncommon to still have feeling tentacles above the eyebrow and around the mouth.
Like most fauna, humans were simultaneous hermaphrodites. They possessed four mammary glands—believed to have eventually influenced the association of the number Four with abundance and later gluttony.
Most human societies frequently modified their bodies, decorating themselves in body paint, with any "impurities" often cast out and replaced with cybernetics. Sometimes, appendages were deliberately removed and replaced in the belief that an artificial body inspired less attachment. Children had their ears cropped in anticipation for frequent mask usage: a necessity in the iterator cities, where higher elevation means thinner air. Surface dwellers were able to get by without masks for a while until the air below became suffocating with the increasing humidity, not to mention a breeding ground for air and waterborne disease.
Most masks double function as headphones and AR interfaces. The modern human would have experienced the world in a way only accessible by their mask; an AR internet that disappeared along with the rest of them."
*I call them humans because there arent any real names for them. The basic etymology for 'human' is 'of the earth,' and it could be assumed that they had their equivalent. But im not gonna conlang for rain world nuh uh so yall get the translation instead

everybody’s always complaining about wot’s lengthy descriptions like speak for yourselves,,, I was personally on the edge of my seat everytime the characters travelled to a new city and sighed in relief when robert finally started describing the food and popular fashion, detailed the city’s unique architecture and the kinds of tiles used for roofing, described the weather, the various modes of transportation, gave a rundown on the governing system, and explored the endemic social tensions. then I would reread those descriptions all over again.

Back again! This time with the most original(-ish)-starbound-plot relevant crewmember!
Tumblr media
TISHA SASHAT [Tenebrhae]
Tisha was is their second year of training when the Earth was ripped apart by a storm of horrors pouring forth from a rift in reality. (Suprise! Thierri's crew resides in a Starbound AU: the most major change is that the ruin was not alone: creatures beyond our comprehension continue to roam (and often terrorize) Protectorate alliance space and beyond. Asra Nox's, and by extension, the Occasus cult's, role is modified in this AU. Notes on that in the tags.) After evacuating to Mars temporarily, they reunited with a few of their friends from the graduating class. Unbeknownst to Tisha, the same friend that would go on to lead the recovery efforts was the one responsible for the rift's opening.
████ didn't destroy earth intentionally. Rather, she ignored the warnings from her mentors about tinkering with the internal storage systems of matter manipulators and caused it to implode at the wrong time and worst place: The Beginning of the Rift. It started out small, barely a rip in space hidden behind a crate of capsules. Maybe it would've closed on its own. However, eager to prove the versatility of her homebrewed manipulator, ████ attempted to stitch it back together by force. What followed was a catastrophic series of chain reactions, leading to the destruction of Earth. ████ was scarred both physically and mentally by her proximity to the tear. Driven by guilt, she leads the effort in recovering the pieces of Earth and possibly sealing them back together after the rip is sealed. Her methods however...
Tisha was unaware of ████'s role in Earth's destruction, only knowing that at the time, she was studying the high level engineering of matter manipulators. They put the pieces together themself when ████ revealed her plan to use the same matter manipulator to try and seal the rift again. Distrustful of ████'s hasty problem solving, Tisha stole the manipulator and fled the solar system. Half fueled by fear and half concern for their former friend, they hope that by removing the solution that ████ recklessly relied on, she will take more time to think of solutions, rather than taking the quickest, yet riskiest route.
Unfortunately, instead of redirecting her focus to other solutions, ████ put a bounty on Tisha's head. They didn't hear about this until after they hopped on a freight ship headed to the edges of Protectorate allied space, though.
Thierri's crew stood out to Tisha among others by having what looked like a fellow tenebrhae as chief engineering officer. Not used to seeing their kind off-planet (and in the same field of study as them!) Tisha applied and was accepted. To their chagrin, what they assumed was a tenebrhae turned out to be Gus' censored profile image. Despite their disappointment, their bounty had reached the edge stations and Tisha had no choice but to leave on the ship and stay with the crew until the end of their contract.
Tisha mostly works with Gus in maintaining the ship's engine. However, Gus is constantly taking over for major tasks, leaving only the most menial and surface level ones for them. This annoys Tisha, who thinks he's underestimating their expertise and overworking himself. In reality, it's because Gus secretly modified the engine to process the erchius crystals that grow from where his left arm used to be. Besides Chal and Thierri, nobody on the ship knows about the Lunar Base Incident, though Tisha is constantly on the verge of finding out.
