just found out that one of dr ratio’s idles is an apple falling on his head whilst he is deep in contemplation.
i know this is a jab at isaac newton and now he discovered gravity, but may i just raise:
since dr ratio is greco-roman inspired, an apple being thrown at someone in Ancient Greece is also a proposal or declaration of love. so the apple that fell on his head was actually because of me, not isaac newton, thank you and have a blessed day.
#i learnt this in my Latin class#fun fact i took latin and maybe one lesson of Ancient Greek#i do not remember anything from latin all you need to know is that cicero means chickpea#so there was an iconic roman politician fully named Cicero in the senate#anyways#earfsmercury

SUMUS ESTIS SUNT
alright everyone, all together now:
SUM ES EST
#my latin teacher drilled that into me back in 5th grade#the day we finally learnt the last forms of the conjugation he had us shouting the whole thing for five whole minutes#He explicitly told us to be 'so loud that the neighbouring classes can hear you'#He was a great Latin teacher and is one of the main reasons I enjoy Latin to this day#Was a great time back then#I believe I am actually mostly incapable of forgetting the conjugation of esse#like - it's ingrained so deeply I would need full-blown amnesia to forget it

ೃ⁀➷ Screws and Ceramicsೃ⁀➷

author's note: I'm sorry this took so long!! I'm back on my writing spree finally!!

“The exterior facade of the Colosseum consists of four levels, with the bottom three levels composed of 80 arches each. Structurally speaking, the arches make possible the immense size of the structure-”
Jason adjusted his glasses as he was trying his hardest to copy his notes down, as quickly as possible, the professor was going kinda fast but Jason didn't blame him.
They have so much coursework for this semester. New Rome coursework for architecture students included the basics of Colosseum construction, Parthenon preservation and the surprising malleability of marble.
Currently Jason was learning the basics of Colosseum construction. It wasn't easy, but Jason was willing to give it his all, he even asked Annabeth for advice. His dream was to redesign temple hill, after he was done finishing the minor gods project. The only way he could get the permission to professionally redesign the structure of a long existing camp, was to get a degree to prove that he was worthy enough.
Romans do not play when it comes to buildings. Moreover, he didn't want anyone to call him a “nepo baby” and that he only got to design temple hill because he was Jupiter's son. Annabeth had already moved up levels of the architecture courses, and graduated with Percy. Jason was two years younger, by the time Annabeth had graduated, he was only then finishing highschool in California, so he still had a long way to go. Thankfully, Leo took engineering in NRU, so Jason had great company.
“Man, all these Romans do is yap yap and yap in cursive. They know nothing about how engineering works.” Leo babbled, complaining about his professor, who was a legacy of vulcan.
Jason scowled. “What are you implying, Leo? That we Romans know nothing about building stuff? That's the biggest stretch I've ever heard. They've built the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Domus Aurea, the Pantheon, Trajan's Column, Trajan's Market, the Catacombs, the Circus Maximus, the Baths of Caracalla, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Mausoleum of Augustus-”
“Woah woah calm down. I see you've clearly learnt all the names of those Roman buildings for your upcoming exam, thank me later for discreetly testing you. Looks like you really know your stuff dude. Romans are still mid engineers though” Leo winked. Jason stared at him bewildered. He hadn't even realized that he spit out all those Roman building names, he'd been up all night studying them.
“Iuppiter te perdat, valdez” (may Jupiter come at you, valdez) Jason muttered.
“Aww come on, don't go all Latin on me now, did you curse me out?” Leo questioned.
“maybe.”
“Well, whether you realize it or not, I seem to be the only one who somehow get you to apply whatever you've learnt in class dude. I mean, I've said like two sentences, and that's enough to get you to yap about Roman buildings and Latin curses” Leo laughed.
Well, he wasn't wrong.
“also you are only proving my point that Romans yap in cursive, I mean, have you seen yourself speak?” Jason gave him a pointed look.
“don't worry, it's cute.” Leo said, patting Jason's hair.
“Well, maybe i yap in cursive because I'm actually knowledgeable.” Jason replied, tersely smiling.
“a little too much of a big head but fair point.” Leo admitted.
“Anyways I'm starving. In honor of you insulting us Romans, Let's go eat some nice Roman food," Jason said, dragging Leo to the cafeteria.

“Leo, what's wrong?” Jason asked as he slipped inside Leo's dorm room. He hadn't heard from leo in a few hours now and he was getting worried.
Leo was scrambling anxiously, his hands seemed to be having minds of their own as his eyes darted around the room.
“I have like, 2 projects due tomorrow, and I swore to myself that I'd start on them early but I was having so much fun it totally slipped my mind-”
“Okay. Alright. First off, calm down. You still have like, 10 hours till your next class. You can still get it done by then, stressing out only prolongs your progress-”
“Give it a rest Dr. Phill” Jason rolled his eyes.
“I'm just trying to help”
“Well it isn't working, just letting you know, man”
“What's your project about? I'm no engineer, but maybe i could help with building the outer structure or solving machine equations to help make it work better-”
“Oh please yes. I need all the help I can get right now”
Jason smiled.
And so. The architect and engineer started their nerdy fiasco.

BABY DRIVER HEIST FIC INFO! (It’s called As Far As It Takes).
Remus’ side!
Remus has chronic back pain & migraines. They are both detrimental to his driving skills but he is BETTER THAN THEM so he preserves.
The Money Men are the group that Remus is oftentimes hired to work for as a getaway driver. While different robbers are hired for different jobs, Mundungus Fletcher— the guy who owns the place— knows Remus is the best driver out there.
The group has Barty Crouch Jr (Nicknamed Bats), Bellatrix Black (nicknamed Trixy), Evan Rosier (nicknamed Thorns), Fenrir Greyback (nicknamed Vánagandr/Vana), and probably some other people but idk. Fletcher is known solely by his last name, but Remus has a tendency to call him Bird or, less eloquently, Bird Shite.
Remus’ own code/nickname is Romulus, but everybody calls him Rome or Roman.
He lives in a city called MayPort (unrelated but the name MayPort is my go-to for all wolfstar fics. I’ll probably give one to sunseeker/other ships too. I think it’s funny) where he rooms in a decent flat with Marlene, who is kinda impaired in some fundamental way because Remus is doing these heists to take care of her even though she doesn’t like what he does.
He knows James from school (they both went to art school; Remus for painting and James for acting) but not Sirius. Sirius went to law school but disregarded everything except for times he could find loopholes. Remus kinda knows Regulus because he saw him in hsi painting class, but they weren’t friends. Remus befriends him later when he and James get closer. Peter he knows because Peter is in the Money Men group (everybody thinks he’s a liability but Remus doesn’t mind him since he’s quiet).
Remus makes a lot of sexual innuendos and crude jokes with the people he’s friends with. He made a few accidentally with precious Money Men groupings, and Bird hated it so he stopped. Barty makes jokes that are similar and when Remus made comments like them, everybody stopped and stared.
Remus has a coffee obsession and changes his order every time. Remembers people’s coffee orders with intricate detail. Everybody thinks it’s weird.
An Astronomy nerd. Knows a lot about stars and planets and everything in between.
Knows a lot of Latin too but never really uses it.
Learnt about cars at a young age (was taught by the late Lyall Lupin who was a car-man or whatever it’s called). Was obsessed with them and really wants an old-style Corvette brcause that was his pa’s favourite.
If anyone can think of more, definitely tell me! I love adding random tidbits of information that the people want. Sirius’ info is coming soon, by the by! I hope you all like Moony in my fic :)

Things are going from bad to worse
masterlist
When I opened the apartment door on the top floor, all I did was leave my backpack at the entrance, took a shower and changed into something more comfortable. Then I decided to go up to the roof to get some air. My mom won't be home for a couple of hours and I needed to think.
When I opened the roof door it was like all my problems were blown away by the wind, but only for a moment.
I made a small pillow out of my jacket and lay on the floor looking at the sky. I'm nervous about having to face my mother.
I really want to be like her when I grow up. She is strong, kind, intelligent and loved wherever she goes. And I? Her only daughter? I feel like I was losing my mind more and more.
I know my mother loves me and I love her too. But I also know that I'm the worst part of her life. A reminder of a past lover that went away, a troubled kid. A special kid, as adults says, that got thrown out of school for the 5th time in a row.
I wonder if she was going to consider the idea of homeschool again. Although I don't think that any teacher would accept me. I did 1st grade at home, and I made my teachers cry.
I don't know how much time I spent daydreaming until a hear the door open. I got up from the surprise, and I looked back to see my mom.
She was still wearing her black suit with her blonde hair pushed back held by a brooch. She looked very tired.
My mom works as a criminal lawyer. She's worked for really bad people, but it's what she had to do to bring food to the table.
- Hi baby - she gave me a tired smile followed by a hug.
- Mom, Percy didn't push the girl and I couldn't just stand there and watch. I'm sorry, I was so close to make things right this year but--
- It's okay, I know. I'm so glad you are okay. - My heart felt tight in my chest. She wore a sad, almost nostalgic look, but her smile had not faded.
- Come, let's sit. - She comanded as she guided me to the ground.
- Sally texted me what happened. She said that Percy saw something. - she told me. She looked at me, hoping that I would explain more.
I know what I saw, what we did to defend ourselves. But I wasn't going to tell her. I didn't wanted to disappoint her any more that I already had. She couldn't know that I had gone completely mad.
- Yeah, we fell down the stairs. We didn't get hurt, but he had that strange dream. - I looked into her eyes when I spoke.
Then, she made a thoughtful face and turned forward.
- How were things on Yancy? - she asked.
- Better. We had an awesome Latin professor, Mr Brunner. He puts a lot of passion and emotion to his classes, you know? It helps with my attention deficit. Really learnt a lot about ancient Greece. I mean it's not helpfull, but still. And Percy and me even made a friend. -
I stopped for a moment. I understand why Grover did what he did. He wasn't the best under pressure, and that's totally fine. But he didn't even tried to say sorry or even talk to us after. It still hurted.
- It was a nice year. - I ended.
- That's nice to hear, my dear. - She finally turned to see me and I smiled at her.
Then, she had her gaze lost somewhere on the upcoming storm, but I only limited myself to look at my hands.
She spoke again after a while.
- Your dad is calling. - She said when she finally looked at me.
- What? - I ask.
My head started spinning as to why he was just now trying to contact me.
I stood up from the ground and my mother followed me.
- Adara, listen to me. - She said while grabbing my face in her hands.
I saw into her eyes, there were tears threatening to come out.
- Why does he feel he has the right to show up now? He left. It was his choice. He had his chances. I don't want anything to do with him, mom. -
- He wants you to go to a camp in Long Island. It's for the best. - She stated.
That man had never been interested in me or my mother, as far as I knew, he had left while my mother was pregnant. And now he gets to decide what's best for me?
- Best for who? - I regretted asking that as soon as it left my mouth. I don't want to know the answer.
- Mom, I know Im broken, but im getting better, i swear. Please, I don't wanna go, i will be good. Don't get rid of me now. Just one more chance, please. I'll make it better. -
I looked at her, and there was pain mixed in the green. I was trying not to cry because maybe if I didn't, then she would trust me.
- Ada, since I carried you in my womb there has not been a day in which I have not loved you or you have not made me feel proud. I will always be there with you. I raised you, you carry my last name. You have become a loving and selfless person, and you grow stronger everyday. -
Rain started to fall.
She looked at the sky with a scared look, then closed her eyes for a moment, and I grabbed her hands in mine. She opened her eyes to look at me.
- But there are things, far beyond my control, that I can not protect you from. - She said softly, like it was a secret.
I felt the tears leave my eyes as now they were falling into my cheeks. My breathing accelerated. The day I always feared had arrived.
- You'll understand soon enough. But you need to get going. -
I could never say no to mom. Not when she was so determined to let me go. Not when I knew she could allow herself a better life. Not when it was for the best.
- Ok. - I said in a whisper.
She grabbed my hand and we went back in the apartment.
I took one last look at my home and took a deep breath. I tried to tattoo in my memory the smell of coconut from the diffuser, the warmth of the blankets that were next to the sofa, the breeze that ran on the balcony.
It would be a long time before I returned here. I would spend the summer on that camp and then straight to the next boarding school Mom finds.
I heard a loud thunder strike somewhere near, and then mom began searching frantically in the drawers of the TV table. Then she walked up to me with a small cloth bag and judging by the sound, it seems to have coins inside.
I tried to search her eyes. I tried to look for some kind of doubt or regret. Anything that could mean she'd change her mind. But there was only determination. Sadness too, yes. But that was not enough.
- Come on, a driver from the camp came to pick you up. - she said while nodding in assurance.
I grabbed my backpack that was on the couch. Fortunately, I hadn't had a chance to unpack.
We went down the elevator to the lobby. The trip is short but it felt eternal. I felt like my heart had been pierced and was slowly becoming empty. I didn't feel any strength in my legs, the air seemed to refuse to enter my lungs and I knew that if I took my eyes off the ceiling, the tears would continue to fall.
The elevator doors opened again and mom gently guided me by the hand to the entrance of the building. Where I saw a delivery van that had the logo of a strawberry with words on the side waiting outside. I couldn't read what was written, but I could make out the word 'farm'
I was going to go to a farm? With animals and plants? I remembered the cactus that mom had given me for my bedroom in Yancy. It died. Don't ask me how.
My mom lifted up the bag for me to take it.
- Your father knows him. Just give him the bag when you get there. - She said.
My heart was empty, crumbling apart by those words. She was getting rid of me.
- Mom, I don't have a good feeling about this. Could you take me to the camp instead? - I pleaded.
My mom grabbed my face again and looked right trought me. Her green eyes focused on my blue ones. Her gaze filled with love was accompanied by a sad smile.
- Oh my baby girl, you are growing up so fast. I can't protect you of the world anymore. So I need you to promise it to me, Adara Williams, you will always remember who you truly are inside. -
- I promise. - I said confidently.
A tear rolled down her cheek. She grabbed the hair clip that was on her hair and placed it in my hand.
The hair clip was green with a little blue gem shaped like a tear. It was similar to my necklace.
- You'll need it. - she said.
She is right, if a was going to a farm I would need to have my hair up all the time.
I unclasped my necklace and placed it on my mom's hand.
- I'll come back for it. - I said with a smile.
She hugged me tightly, and so did I.
- See you mom. I love you. - I said smiling at her.
- I love you too, sweety. Take care. - She responded. She kissed my forehead very gently, as if I would break if she was too rough.
When I got in the van I saw a man who looked like a typical blonde surfer, except there was something weird in him. Maybe it was that he was wearing a strange peacock like suit or the way he gave me a withering look and stayed silent when I asked his name.
That let me wondering, were peacocks a trend now?
I saw my mom waving goodbye in tears when the van engine turned on, and I waved back with a smile.
The sound of rain and thunder filled my senses. Storms always helped me relax. But I was still breathing heavy as the unnamed man drives through the city. There was pressure building in my chest. A terrible feeling. Something dangerous was about to come.

Do you recommend studying Classics?
Yes, but it’s complicated.
Today, we generally hold the idea that, in order for a degree to be ‘useful’, you must use the information learnt over the course of your studies in your future job. Most STEM degrees are useful under this definition, and so are vocational subjects like Law and Medicine. Classics, on the other hand, is pretty much useless, unless your future job is in, say, museum curation or academia, or you plan to become a Latin teacher. However, Classics (in certain cases, upon which I’ll elaborate shortly) is still highly respected by employers in a myriad of seemingly unrelated fields, and this is because its use lies in the skills it teaches you, not the information itself.
Generally, employers do not expect—and, often, do not even want—you to be ‘perfect for the job’. They want someone who shows potential, and who is mouldable. Companies have their own ways of doing things, and they prefer employing people who are quick learners over those who already have the knowledge, but in a slightly different way from their own. The skills gained through studying Classics, and the broad range of disciplines one has to cover during the degree, make for extremely versatile potential employees, even if the information itself is irrelevant. Your knowledge of Greek and Latin tells a recruiter that you’re capable of learning complex languages to a high level, and that the company could put you on a course to study any language useful to them and be assured that you’d do well and pick it up quickly—whereas a candidate who speaks, say, Spanish might be more immediately useful to the company, but there’s no guarantee that they are linguistically adept and would cope on a course for German or Arabic, since they may have simply grown up bilingually and never actually spent time learning a foreign language to a high level. A degree in Classics says that you can read, digest, and summarise large quantities of material very quickly, that you’re analytical (syntax classes), detail-oriented (art history), and persuasive (philosophy and rhetoric), and that you’re able to solve problems and view situations from an intercontextual perspective. You are, essentially, a blank slate with all of the skills already pre-installed.
However, there are increasingly few Classics degrees that actually teach you all of these skills. What was once undisputedly the most difficult Humanities subject is now widely considered a Mickey Mouse degree at a majority of institutions, and, unless you are accepted into one of the very few courses that maintains the old rigour and breadth, I think that it’s really a waste of money if corporate employment is your goal after graduation. Most courses today teach texts in translation, and even those that do teach you one (or occasionally more) ancient language won’t actually teach you anything beyond a very basic level, and you’ll walk out of your degree still unable to properly read Homer—if Homer is even on the syllabus. There’s a lot of talk at the moment about making Classics accessible, but, in my opinion, that’s fighting a losing battle. The original Classics degrees were developed at a time when higher education was reserved for the sons of kings and statesmen, and so the degree was designed specifically for these privileged young men, who would have already had a comprehensive knowledge of the classical canon and languages before they even began. It is elitist by design. It’s a sad truth, but to make Classics more accessible would mean entirely dismantling it and restructuring beyond recognition (this was actually attempted with Oxford’s PPE course, i.e. Modern Greats). Anything less simply weakens the subject—and the Classics taught today around the world is, generally, a weakened and diluted form of the original. No less elitist and no easier for those coming from alternative backgrounds, either, but significantly less useful.
As such, the only really useful Classics courses are those which haven’t yet been diluted in this way, and are thus heavily biased towards those who come from educational and cultural backgrounds similar to the young men for whom the degree was originally intended. Women at Oxford are significantly less likely to attain a first-class mark in Literae Humaniores compared to their male peers, and this is because girls’ schools begin teaching Latin (and Greek, if it is even taught) much later than boys’ schools in the UK, and so, even though both might have achieved equal marks at A Level, the boys’ depth of knowledge and ability in language far outweighs the girls. For students who began their degree with no prior knowledge of either language, the likelihood of achieving a First is even lower. To do well in Lit Hum, you need to already have a comprehensive knowledge of world history, art, and philosophy, and enough of a grasp of French, German, and Italian to be able to read the piles of foreign-language secondary literature—and these prerequisites essentially exclude anyone who wasn’t privileged enough to receive a world-class education from nursery school onwards, or, at the very least, places them at an inherent disadvantage throughout their degree. The level of fluency necessary to be able to quickly and accurately read and analyse the prescription is far beyond the capacity for learning in the duration and quality of ab initio teaching—two terms of daily language classes are provided, and by that point, beginner students are expected to be of an equal standing to their peers who have studied Latin and Greek since the age of four or even younger.
Classics is an incredibly useful degree, but only in its original context and intention, and that door, for better or for worse, is very nearly shut to most today.

Snape Asks
Do you have a snOTP? What is it?
Sure, Snape x [First name] (specifically my OC) haha
2. What do you think is Snape's favourite colour and why?
Black? Like...obviously. You think he'd wear so much of it if he didn't genuinely like it?
3. Which Disney character, according to you is most like Snape?
Scar. I don't think there's another answer.
4. Do you think Snape remained a virgin?
I hate this question. Absolutely NOT. The dude was guilty about his best friend's death, it doesn't mean he never had sex. The only way he would have is if he were fully asexual (which, to be fair, seems possible).
5. Do you think Snape ever loved anyone other than Lily, romantically or platonically?
Romantically, no. Platonically, I think he loved Dumbledore and Draco.
6. If Snape learnt another language, which would he choose?
Latin, doy.
7. Which staff member do you think gets along well with Snape?
Dumbledore. I don't think he and McGonagall were friends, despite the fluffy popular head canons. Mutual respect, sure, but not friendship. Otherwise, I don't see him hanging out with any other staff.
8. If you had to assign Snape to a house, which one would it be?
Slytherin. No question. Dude was immensely ambitious.
9. What are your personal headcanons on Snape's diet and favourite foods?
I think eating was a chore for him. He probably had one favorite meal at any given time and it was all he wanted to eat. It'd change monthly. Sometimes he'd have a bread-and-cheese month, sometimes he'd have an eggs-and-bacon month. Otherwise he'd forget to eat.
10. Do you think Snape's character has changed the way you think/feel about others?
Yeah, I mean I hate James Potter. That's more because of the Marauders stans though. What a toxic community.
11. Your favourite scenes with book/movie!Snape?
Literally every book Snape scene.
12. If you had to chose a Golden trio era student to be Snape's friend, who would it be and why?
Luna.
13. Do you think Alan Rickman contributed to your love for Snape?
Yeah, but I loved book Snape first.
14. What do you think is Snape's favourite potion to prepare?
Probably changes based on the month. Whatever's fascinating him at the moment. Something complicated and finnicky, definitely.
15. If Snape had any free time, how do you think he would spend it?
Reading, drinking wine, doing up his buttons, smoking.
16. Were you ever a Snater? How and when did you become a Snover?
God no. I have taste.
17. Do you think Snape was unhappy even after joining the DEs?
Yes, definitely. I don't think it ever gave him what he was looking for.
18. Your favourite physical feature of Snape?
Eyes.
19. According to you, what is Snape's biggest flaw?
Being a dick for absolutely no reason. Lack of chill.
20. Why do you love Snape so much?
He's powerful and brilliant and misunderstood. He's also a weird sexy feral emo boy. He's also a professor and like...sheesh.
21. What particular memory do you think Snape used to conjure his patronus?
Something with Lily obviously. Could be anything. The day they met, hanging out by the Black Lake, laughing in class. It probably changes.
22. Do you think Lily was a good friend to Severus?
Not really. Maybe when they were kids, but once she started hating his friends, there's a real sense that she thought she was too cool for him.
23. What do you think Snape wore under his robes?
Dude what? Trousers.
24. Do you think Snape ever self-harmed?
I don't think he'd see the point.
25. Is there any other character you love as much as Snape? Do you think they'll get along?
Yeah. And no, they absolutely would not get along.
26. What genre do you think Snape preferred to read?
Crime, thrillers, non-fiction, historical fiction, maybe some horror
27. Do you think Snape was close to his mother?
No. I think he was disappointed by her. But he loved her more than he loved his dad.
28. Do you think you'd like being taught by Snape?
Only if we were fucking. Otherwise, from what I've seen he seems like a pretty lazy and demanding teacher.
29. How do you headcanon Snape's bedroom would look like?
Queen bed with dark sheets, a few bookcases, a desk and reading chair.
30. If you could give young Snape any advice, what would it be?
You're better than your origins. James Potter sucks--rise above it. And don't listen to the fucking Death Eaters man, come on. Dark Arts aren't the only magical mysteries left.
31. Do you think Snape had any mental illnesses? Which ones and why?
Yeah, dude. If the guy wasn't depressed I will eat my fucking hat. He was probably anxious as hell too. Maybe on the spectrum.
32. If you could change Snape's middle name to be something other than Tobias what would you choose?
Do people have opinions on this?
33. Top 3 songs you think will show up in Snape's most played?
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen
Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus
34. Do you have any Snape NOTPs?
I hate Snape x any of the Potters. Lily, James and Harry need to back off. Haven't they put him through enough?
35. Snapey BROTPs?
No, I want my man lonely and annoyed.
36. Did Snape get sick often? Your headcanons for when he was sick?
I don't think OFTEN. He'd definitely refuse to go to the hospital wing and brew his own cures. Probably worked when he was sick too. Stubborn ass.
37. Snape didn't pay attention to his physical appearance, but if you had to choose a part he would take care of, which would it be?
I disagree, I think the dude knew how to dress. I also think he cleaned his nails.
38. Which type of weather does Snape prefer?
Gray and cool.
39. How do you think Snape spent his early childhood days?
Hiding from his dad, finding joy where he could.
40. Other than Lily, who do you think impacted Snape's life the most?
Dumbledore. I think Narcissa and Lucius did too. Probably some of his DE friends--Mulciber springs to mind.
41. Is there a side to Snape that he hasn't let anyone see? What do you headcanon this "secret personality" to be like?
I don't think he laughs in public often. I think you'd have to be really close to see that.
42. Do you think Snape cried often?
As a kid and teenager, yes. I think at some point those tears dried up though.
43. What's your favourite headcanon about Snape?
He's actually a good professor and not as ugly as Harry seems to think.
44. Is there a movie/song/book that reminds you of Snape?
Tons of songs remind me of him. Sunburn by Muse will forever be the Broken Silence anthem.
45. What mode of magical travel would suit Snape the best?
God, anything but a fucking broom.
46. Your opinion on Snape's sexuality?
Realistically, somewhere on the demi spectrum. Possibly ace. In my head he's like a dom, bi-curious brat tamer though.
47. Which of the Marauders do you think Snape could have gotten along with?
If there was ever even a SHOT it would have been Lupin. The least awful of them.
48. How many points do you think Snape would've awarded during his career?
Sounds like he awarded a lot to Slytherins. Uncountable.
49. Did you feel Snape was the "good guy" even before the reveal?
Yep. I never lost faith.
50. Do you prefer tall!Snape or short!Snape?
Tall.
51. Had Snape lived, would he continue teaching at Hogwarts?
ARE YOU JOKING? ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT.

Hi! I'm a uni student and am about to take a latin class for the semester. I have never learnt latin before, nor do I know another language besides english (I'm hoping to learn more though!) but I'm both excited and scared to jump straight in. How can I best prepare myself please and what is the easiest way to start learning without being overwhelmed please?
Salve!
The thing that I suggest that you do right away is see if you can find out what Latin textbook you will be using in your class. Different textbooks use different approaches. Some are more grammar-focused (e.g., Shelmerdine’s Introduction to Latin) while others are more immersion-method-focused (e.g., Lingua Latina per se Illustrata) while still others are more reading/story-focused (e.g., Cambridge Latin Course). Knowing what textbook you will use can give you a sense of the sorts of material you are likely to be working with on a day-to-day basis. Either way, I encourage you to get a copy of the textbook that you will use as soon as you can and read through a few of the early chapters on your own. Once you do that, you will quickly learn that Latin grammar is very different from English grammar!
Another thing that you can do is search YouTube for videos of songs in Latin. These can give you a sense of the general sound of the language. Although many of the well-known ones are Medieval Latin and have Medieval instead of Classical pronunciation, their pronunciation really is not too different from what you will be hearing in class. Personally, I like these: Carmina Burana [ O Fortuna ~ Fortune plango vulnera ] (lyrics: 1/2), Carmina Burana: In Taberna Quando Sumus (lyrics).
At this stage of your journey in learning Latin, you do not need to get yourself a dictionary. If you want to get one anyway, I suggest Traupman’s The New College Latin & English Dictionary, Third Edition. It goes both English-Latin and Latin-English, it has some basic grammar-related explanations, and it includes some Neo-Latin stuff like interrete, “internet” (and so you can try to work out how I translated my memes and such).
Utinam hoc tibi prosit! I hope this is helpful!
Vale.

Things I'm Scripting
Hogwarts DR
Some past & Some present

General
I am 18 years old.
I am a Hufflepuff.
I am an animagus (tawny owl)(happened during 5th-6th year). My patronus is also a tawny owl. McGonagall taught me and guided me through the transformation.
I have the same piercings as this reality. (I am NOT getting them done again tyvm☝️).
My pronouns are they/them and the teachers and other students, my friends, know and accept that.
My parents are both slytherins. My mother is muggle born, and my father is pureblood. Me being a hufflepuff was a surprise but they learnt to accept it.
It's sort of "modern day"? But not really? Like we have phones and apps and stuff but there's not much difference between the movies/books and my dr, just cellphones & Netflix, etc. (I would die without my music.)
I am 1 year above Golden Trio & 1 year below Fred & George
Hogwarts
There is the option to stay on for more years (like a sixth form kinda? + Uni) to learn more in-depth subjects, as well as some muggle subjects such as business or sciences, maybe Muggle Philosophy if that isn't one already idk it feels Hogwarts-y. I chose to stay, and so did the Weasley twins.
In later years (like Uni or A-levels), years, houses, etc can overlap, like a year above or below can be in the same class as you, or you can choose to take a gap year and come back to Hogwarts, and theres also a 6 week period where you can change your classes, in any year, but you would start back at the first year of a-levels (like college in this reality). These students use different classrooms and have different time tables to younger years (1st-7th). So sometimes i have a few classes with the twins.
All the Hufflepuff teachers have a soft spot for Hufflepuff students, although i feel that could be canon already for all houses, but I'm scripting it anyway. Also we kind of have a reputation of not getting in much trouble so we can kinda do whatever we want without much backlash because people just don't really expect us to do anything against the rules.
The bedrooms are kinda different in the sense that they're more split by sides of boys & girls but it's not enforced like with the stairs, boys just can't enter girls rooms due to spells and vice versa, and there are a few students who are also nonbinary or transgender or just not cis who choose to stay in the rooms in between, being bewitched so that only the people staying in the room and who they allow can enter.
Classes
Dumbledore stays head teacher the whole time I'm there, he also doesn't die. Sorry but i do not want to deal with Umbridge either. Let me be happy. 🙏
There is a latin class which helps a LOT with remembering spell names, and just general wizarding knowledge.
Most of the subject material once you learn the basics is just common sense.
Divination teaches about shifting. Idk how this will go down but we'll see (I'm gonna ace that class bro watch me)
Timeline (?)
The whole war in 7th year? Yeah that didn't happen. This is my reality fuck you Voldy <3 He was probably caught or defeated during one of the earlier years or before, idk I'll let the universe decide.
Relationships w/ Characters
Draco's parents urged him to befriend me since they knew of my parents, and we did become friends but not for the reasons his parents hoped, we just got along, and his parents were shocked when they found out i was a Hufflepuff and not a Slytherin like they had thought. Avoiding bullying 101. 😎 He's also just not as big of a dick as he was in the first few movies & books, he's much like Draco later on.
George Weasley has a crush on me. I'm not going to script much about how it plays out, I'll leave that up to the universe... 😚
Snape knew my parents when they were in Hogwarts and so he kinda has a soft spot for me, well, he's slightly nicer, still strict but not like mean strict? I'm basically a Slytherin adopted Hufflepuff lmao. He was probably the most shocked when i was sorted to be a Hufflepuff.
McGonagall also has sort of a soft spot for me mainly just because i took a big interest in transfiguration and animagi, when i told her i was interested in becoming an animagus she was a little hesitant but decided to help me.
I help Hagrid with care of creatures, I think this might either be some time after i befriend the golden trio or after he finds out I'm an animagus, not sure.
Usually when i shift theres a few differences between my script or things happen that i didn't script that become a large part of my dr, so I'll update this every now and then i think.

Some books I’m excited to read this year:
The Poppy War, RF Kuang (absolutely loved Babel, and have had this on my tbr for years)
The Illiad and the Odyssey - probably Emily Wilson’s translation. I’m at the stage where I have learnt as much as I can about Greek mythology without reading the classics, and I’m so excited to actually delve into them
The Atlas Six trilogy, Olivie Blake. Read the first one aaaaaages ago and devoured it in practically one sitting, even more excited for the whole thing
Maybe something by Cicero - or a commentary on it. Studied him a lot in Latin classes way back and have always found his work and rhetoric fascinating.
The Lotus Empire, Tasha Suri. Some people might recall I wrote a looong review singing the praises of the Jasmine Throne, and book 2 was even better, so my hopes are high for book 3. Such fast paced writing that has you hooked, and a romance that absolutely got my flustered. And some parallels with the “purity” of women as seen in our world which oooooofff. Just go read it.
Something on linguistics- which I realise is incredibly vague but I think it’s one where I’m going to have to go to the library and see what they have there. I’d love a deep dive into Creoles. But simply an introduction to the wider field would scratch the itch in my brain
Stormlight Archive 5 - the last one of this arc - is released in December. So I’ll be enjoying a reread of the entire series (which is a lot of pages) which will be good. I honestly think that the first reread is just as enjoyable as reading something for the first time, as you can pick up so much more!
Balancing the fantasy I know I love with some more exploration- plus I know that as soon as I’m back in the library I’ll be picking up non fiction books on a eclectic mix of topics (sighs dramatically as I think about her. The library).
#if you have any recs please drop below!#it’s gonna be a good year#plus I’ve snagged so many good books in the kindle flash deals#borrow from your library and buy physical books from your local store please#let’s keep them very much alive pls#but I can’t deny the 99p ebook deals have to be used#but yes many more books on the list but these are the standouts#questwithambition#studyblr#studyspo#books#bookblr

This is actually just a rant I left in someone's replies when I saw someone complaining about British people not seasoning their food. Like yes I get it, it's funny to say like "why did you steal all those spices if you weren't going to use them" but like, this is mostly a criticism I see from people who don't live here and I thought a fuller picture might interest people.
Sooooo, something to note about food in the UK. We do have good food here but most of it is imported cuisine, and the best of the foreign foods we have tend to be from those cultures that we have significant populations of, for example Caribbean, North African and Indian. So we have shit Latin food mostly because we have no significant Latin population. As for British food itself, well old recipe books from the 19th century and before weren't very good, they didn't give specific quantities and made references to things that were taken for granted at the time but that we no longer have context for. Additionally it wasn't the food of the average citizen that was being recorded but that of the higher ups and back then the food of the upper classes was heavily inspired by french cuisine. So in comes the 20th century and 2 world wars. A lot of British food culture gets essentially destroyed by rationing and you have a whole generation that grow up learning how to make do during a period where we weren't getting all the spices that we stole from everywhere else. And what they were taught out of necessity they taught their kids out of convenience, or laziness or tradition, take your pic I guess. That combined with successive media frenzies over the decades; going on and on about the dangers of salt and sugar and saturated fats and MSG and basically anything you can think of that makes food taste good. That has combined to create multiple generations of people that see bland food as an almost moral good. It's good to be frugal, you never know when rationing is going to happen again, it's good to eat healthy even if it's miserable and unappetising. Younger generations here have grown up in a world where our parents food often sucks. (At least this is true of a lot of white British people). Most white British people I know don't have a nostalgic feeling about their parents cooking. Like I was always confused growing up by the media trope of food made "just like [insert family member here] used to make". Because why would you want that?? As a result of this there is a push against this trend in the younger generations. I personally would call myself a good cook, I branch out a lot and have learnt from cuisine all over the world. One of the greatest things about the internet in my opinion is the ease of transmission of food culture, because dear god do we desperately need that here. But the thing is the young generation are largely quite poor in comparison to our elders. This means we eat out less and order takeaway less and thus our tastes, our relatively new found appreciation of good food is not reflected in the hospitality industry. Restaurants cater to the middle classes, who still insist on low fat everything with no salt and always double check how spicy something is before ordering. So yeah, this is why it's hard to get good food here. It does exist, and it's getting better, but like yeah it's sure taking its time.
Also at the very least you got to give it to us, the thing we stole the most of was pepper and we put that shit on literally everything.

in the bj/nimona au, where did Lydia learn latin, did her mom teach her some, or did she learn some in a book she read? Or a combination of those two and school, because I just remembered you mentioned it came from school, and forgot some school did have a class for that.
i think im going to say either she has it as an actual class and chalk it up to her going to private school (i feel like thats a private school thing? idk the only time ive heard of it being an actual class is in a documentary about eaton) or it was extracurricular, which is how i learnt it. if im remembering right my secondary school only offered it to ''''gifted'''' students, and had an outside teacher who came in for like an hour or so after school on mondays to teach it. i liked that guy, he was very soft spoken, little brown mouse with glasses who lives in a library vibes on that man. i actually got the option to take a gcse exam on it and i remember doing it twice but i have no idea if that means i have two seperate qualifications or one was a mock and i just dont remember that or what. i got like an A in it somehow even though i never really learnt the grammar rules properly just translated on vibes and some vocab memorisation alone and since you never really have to translate the other way because its a dead language it was kinda easy to bullshit to a point. but that means im now having to learn it from the ground up again. tbh using it in the crossover is partially just a way to keep myself interested enough to relearn it because its something i keep meaning to do.
ANYWAY this post is supposed to be about bj/nimona au not my secondary school latin experience. the idea that her mum taught her some is pretty interesting actually that is something to consider but im pretty set on the bulk of it coming from school. and her school uses the cambridge latin course 4th edition because how could i deny her such a banger. as i said though its not the exact same latin the kingdom uses (although any 'kingdom latin' i write will probably just be regular latin) and shes not really learnt to speak it or understand it being spoken because it was thought to be dead so its more a case she has a pretty good starting point for nimona to teach her from than her knowing the language from the start. but as well as nimona having the best english out of her ambrosius and ballister, shes also old enough that she was around when classical latin (as i think its called?) was being spoken in the kingdom so nimona is in a very good position to teach her. unfortuately this actually makes latin class at school harder in a way, because shes having to constantly make sure shes using the right dialect. her teacher (very much inspired by mine) is very excited about the existance of kingdom latin and is trying to learn some themself, so mix-ups just lead to conversations about the neuances of the two dialects more often than not.
i have already run into a problem that i could chalk up to the dialect difference, which is interesting. i figured that since nimona uses 'boss' almost like a nickname she probably wouldnt translate it, so i went looking for what it would be in latin. from what i can tell the best translation is 'dominus' (though if im understanding my cases right shed say 'domine'), which would make lydia do a double take if she heard it because its first translation given in the cambridge latin course is 'master'. not sure if i want to use dominus and point out the difference there or just use 'dux' which to my understanding is a slightly weaker translation, but either way neither is perfect. i do want to have vocabulary differences like that but i might just use 'dux' and leave the vocab stuff to something less important and with lighter implications. plus, dux keeps the same sylables as boss which i like. i think i just talked myself into using dux.
#i may not have the skill to come up with a whole new dialect but i sure as hell can chalk imperfect translations up to it!#bj/nimona au

7, 13, and 15 for the historical asks
Thank you for the ask!
7. Historical dressing, uniform or costume?
When I was 13, I sewed my own tunica and paenula and wore them to school so I think they deserve the spotlight!
Tunica
Paenula

I actually got into the school yearbook so here's that.

13. Something random about some random historical person in a random era.
For some reason whenever someone asks me a question like that, I freeze up and literally can't think of anything!
I'll just say what I usually say when someone asks me for a random fun fact. Apparently Nero and Britannicus had some birds that were taught to say a few things in Greek and Latin.
"At the moment that I am writing this, the young Caesars (Nero and Britannicus) have a starling and some nightingales that are being taught to talk in Greek and Latin; besides which, they are studying their task the whole day, continually repeating the new words that they have learnt, and giving utterance to phrases even of considerable length." Pliny the Elder, The Natural History, 10.59

Omg omg omg. That's so cute! So cute! My heart can't take it. Especially with what happened in the end. . .
Anyway, @the-little-fox-in-the-box I know you will love that quote.
15. Were the history classes teached in an interesting way in your school/ college/ university? What would you do to improve them if you were the teacher / lecturer?
Uhhhh it really depends on what was being taught! I think generally, the history of other places was taught in a much more engaging and interesting way than how the history of Canada was taught. And guess what 99% of the history classes were about :(
Canadian history.
I think that the history of Canada should be taught more similarly to how the history of other places is taught. It's like they want us to forget Canadian history!
Generally when we were taught Canadian history, we never got any creative assignments. We only got extremely boring quizzes and tests. And the assignments that are literally just tests you get to bring home.
But when we were taught Renaissance history, all our assignments were super creative. I got to compare art styles and have interviews with Dante and Petrarch and stuff like that. And I still know a lot about this part of history and I would happily study about it, which I cannot say about Canadian history.
For non-Canadian history, I think it was taught well and it was engaging and interesting. My only critiques are of the content itself. I think very often they kind of zoom into one perspective and refuse to look anywhere else. But that's not how it was taught, but what was taught, which isn't really what this question is asking.
Why can't we have creative ways to apply our knowledge in Canadian history? The way I was taught it, we were pretty much just encouraged to memorize the summaries of a bunch of dull events to regurgitate during a test and never care about ever again.
So yeah, if I was the teacher, I'd just teach all the history as if it were non-Canadian history.

First InDesign class.
Our last part of the fundamentals software course was InDesign. We started with the indesign styles and image placement.

This was my starting page of notes. In InDesign, a paragraph is considered to be any text between a carriage return. This means that every time I push the return button, that is a new paragraph.
We started by using the text tool and making a large text box the size of the page. By using one of the shortcuts metioned above, 'type - fill with placeholder text' we were able to fill the entire text box with this latin text.
We learnt what some of the different paragraph style options would do, and how do these affect the paragraph we have.
In this panel, the basic character formats section will allow us to change the font, size, and leading (the vertical space between the lines of text).
The Indents and spacing allows us to increase the spacing after each parargraph.
The Hyphenation will allow us to get rid of all the hyphens in the selected paragraph.
From here, we created two different paragraph styles:
body copy
headings
In this image on the left, you can see how the headings and the body paragraphs are different.

Can you write the purpose of each language you speak?
Farsi/Ukrainian: my native languages (C2+, no qualification)
Gilaki/Azeri/Talysh/Armenian: I heard these languages in my town when I was growing up, as they’re the languages of the different ethnicities that live there (B2, no qualification)
Arabic: I left Iran before I entered 7th grade (when schoolchildren start learning Arabic) but I learnt some passively through my older siblings, and started learning independently when I was older (B2+, no qualification)
Old Church Slavonic: I can read OCS as it’s the ancestor of Ukrainian, and the language of the Orthodox Bible (C1, no qualification)
Polish: Polish is very similar to Ukrainian, and my hometown in Ukraine is close to the Polish border, so I improved a lot when I lived there (C1, I have my CEPFL)
English: I learnt English in high school and currently attend a university in England (C2, I have my CPE)
Russian: I spent my teenage years in Ukraine, where a lot of media is in Russian and many people speak Russian as a first language (C2, I have my TORFL-IV)
German: I took German classes in high school and taught myself to a higher level, because I considered it to be useful to know the main languages of the European artistic world (C2, I have my Goethe Certificate)
French: I taught myself French for the same reason as German—it’s one of the main languages of the European artistic world (C2, I have my DALF)
Italian: I taught myself Italian for the same reason as German & French—it’s one of the main languages of the European artistic world (C2, I have my CILS 4)
Latin: I study Classics at university, and my course is very language-heavy. I was taught to speak it from the very beginning (C1, I received top marks in my main Latin exams and I speak the language daily)
Ancient Greek: same as Latin. I use Ancient Greek slightly less often, but I can read historical texts and make conversation fluently (~B2+, I received top marks in my main Greek exams)
Hungarian: I’ve been learning Hungarian for 2 years, as it’s Alajos’ native language (taking my B2 ECL soon)
Biblical Hebrew: I started Biblical Hebrew classes as an optional module in my 1st year of uni, and I’ve continued learning for Bible study (not sure of my level—I can read pretty fluently)
Cantonese: I’ve been learning Cantonese for 2 years, because the career I want to go into has strong links in Hong Kong (B2+, I have my A Level)
Mandarin: I’ve been learning Mandarin for 1 year, for the same reason as Cantonese (taking my HSK 6 (~B2+) soon)

Love you but how many languages do you know 😭 latin, italian, I saw you use spanish? What else?
sit down diva cus i have a story to tell lmao
so like, spanish and polish but they're my default so i don't count them. latin and italian are cus of uni. this semester i'm also taking ukrainian classes. i think i've tried to learn every european language there is on duolingo, but none of them sticked around cus i get burnt out if i'm not immediately good. then we got this time a romani (not romanian, and the g word is a slur) woman wanted me to marry her grandson and i was like "yknow what?? hell yeah" cus i love side quests but uhhh i haven't gotten married but i did try to learn romani (there's many variations and it'll differ from where i live to idk the uk or something tho). and then there's arabic but i don't know the alphabet, only know a few phrases cus i learnt from an ex. went to tunisia with family and lowkey tricked a guy to think i'm a local, but i think he was just being nice and that wasn't actually true.
oh and i really wanted to learn hebrew from the israeli situationship, but he didn't want to teach me anything so i only knwo how to say "hello what's up" :(
yeah so that's basically it, my language skills aren't much, but they're honest work
