also something I really love about Dimitri telling Rodrigue that his death would destroy him is that’s finally proof that it was Rodrigue dying that made Dimitri almost go out into a suicide battle in AM.
people have been saying (and actually meaning it, not as a joke) that Byleth just “fixed” Dimitri and that they don’t like how Dimtiri was just “magically cured” because of Byleth.
that was never true. both him wanting to die completely and utterly in that moment when he spoke to Byleth was because he lost all sense of hope when he lost Rodrigue; however, it was also because of Rodrigue’s words to him that he could go on living. Byleth was a deterrent from him going out into a suicide battle because he was so overwhelmed, but he also points out, iirc a couple times post Gronder in AM, that Byleth said the same thing Rodrigue did to him.
when Byleth says anything that seems to “change” him, it’s because it’s something he could think back on as “oh, he said the same thing to me so it must have been the truth if someone else can say the same thing and it wasn’t just because he loved myself and Lambert that he said those things”. basically, Byleth could verify the truth of Rodrigue’s words.
Dimitri also says he ISN’T cured and just “okay”. he tells Byleth directly that what is effectively his mental illness is something that he knows he’ll have to live with for the rest of his life, but that he’s no longer going to let it hold him down. he outright admits his understanding of his issue with the voices of the dead. he knows they may always be there and he knows his aggression due to losing so many loved ones in his life will always haunt him.
the sad thing is I feel like people just pick and choose things they want to see for the sake of argument, and I say that because it’s not even nuance in this case that it’s very clear that Dimitri isn’t just “cured” of his illness. it wasn’t ever something that needed to be looked more deeply into. it was said outright multiple times that Dimitri wasn’t just “cured” or “fixed” or any of that, and it’s also very outright that Byleth wasn’t the one who helped him to see things straight again. it was Rodrigue who opened his eyes (no pun intended) and it was Byleth being there to confirm Rodrigue’s words.
mind you, Byleth spoke to Rodrigue in private one night and Rodrigue shared some personal feelings with Byleth, then said he entrusted the future of Faerghus and Dimitri to Byleth. anything from that point on that Byleth did that helped Dimitri see his way again was because Byleth was keeping true to Rodrigue’s words.
prior to that, nothing Byleth ever did could sway Dimitri. the only person, right from the beginning to the end of the battle at Gronder, who could sway Dimitri or make him waver in his feelings was Rodrigue. he would argue with anyone else in a steadfast way, but when Rodrigue finally had enough and told Dimitri he would listen to him, Dimitri did. considering Dimitri has always seen him as a second father, it makes sense that Dimitri would take that as a scolding from his own father. even in the mental state he was in, he didn’t brush it off as “just someone” telling him those things. he took it to heart and he also thanked Rodrigue, calling him a friend despite his behavior up to that point (which was Ailell).
in other words, Byleth never really had much influence at all on Dimitri’s recovery until he lost Rodrigue. it highlights quite well imo that Dimitri truly saw Rodrigue as his own father. if Lambert had been there to speak to him similarly, Dimitri would have reacted similarly. he might have argued, but at the end of the day he was still affected by what he was told.
essentially Byleth was like a proxy for Dimitri after he lost Rodrigue. it was like all of Rodrigue’s wishes were within Byleth now because Rodrigue felt he could trust Byleth, and that got through to Dimitri (and it also helped that Byleth and Rodrigue see things similarly, as highlighted by them saying very similar things to Dimitri but prior to Gronder, Dimitri only listened if Rodrigue was the one to say something). it was not directly Byleth, but because it was like Rodrigue’s feelings for Dimitri were now within Byleth.
I just really feel like people looked right over the head of their relationship in Houses and just how much it meant to Dimitri. their relationship could make or break him and it did both. Hopes helped to emphasize how powerful their bond is and gives you more context into how and why he lost his will to live when Rodrigue died at Gronder. obviously Byleth is important to him, but Rodrigue has been with Dimitri for Dimitri’s entire life and wasn’t someone his age - he was a respected adult and the man who protected Faerghus for five straight years from the Empire when Dimitri had to flee and couldn’t be the one to do that. he respects the other adults in Faerghus, but even in Hopes it’s very clear that he doesn’t view Matthias or Gilbert as a father figure. Gilbert has a bit more on Matthias there, but Rodrigue is extremely special to Dimitri and as much a father to him as Lambert was.

ohoho you have opened the gates of hell... (you dont have to reply to this btw!! im just spouting hcs at you via ask to stay anonymous heehoo)
so i think aoki realized he was a guy when he was pretty young, was very insistant on it, and the dilf arakawa was fine with it ofc he just wanted his kid to be happy (sawashiro didnt really understand it at first but was never shitty about it.) he probably started hrt pretty young (clearly didnt learn much about syringe safety though). at some point ichiban finds out and hes supportive as hell but he also doesnt know that much so he is like a little over the top but its okay because he just wants to let his brother know people support him!! not that the bitchboy really appriciates it. aoki binds, probably for unhealthy long amounts of time despite his family's protests, and eventually gets top surgery when he goes to america for his other treatments. also as a trans daigo truther, i like to believe they bonded over that :)
im taking notes in my funny little spiral notebook and im ripping the page out and sticking it to my brain because this will surely be a surprise tool to help us later

WIP Friday (On a Monday, technically, I was out of town for the weekend lmao) Tagged by my wonderful bestie @travelbystarlight where she demanded my wip for Stranger Things. I was set upon by horrible visions of a scene I feel in my heart happens off-screen so have this sad little thing. (STS4 volume 2 spoilers).
It's not that long of a walk back to Eddie's trailer. It's a tentative one, everyone quiet. Vecna, or Henry, or whatever they were calling him now, clearly gone, could be lurking, somewhere, anywhere. The bats too, though it was quieter somehow. Steve doesn't understand how this all works more than anyone else does, but he hopes maybe injuring Vecna had injured everything else in this awful place. Despite that, they all knew this hadn't been a win. They'd heard the clock, they knew Max was- He takes a sharp breath. He can't think about it, what that chiming meant, where Max or Lucas or Erica was, or what Vecna had shown Nance, or any of it. He can't picture Hawkins in chaos, can't picture what happens if they failed tonight, who else might die, who else might be dead. He has half a mind to stab at the vines he's so carefully avoiding, just to hurt Vecna, wherever the bastard is. "You okay?" Nancy says quietly over her shoulder, casting a glance at him. Steve just nods, lips in a tight grimace, and it's enough to get her to drop it. When the trailer comes into sight, there's no Eddie nor Dustin on the roof. It's a good sight, or at least he thinks, for a moment. Dustin's safe back in the trailer park, probably talking with Eddie, waiting for the three of them to return. The little shit will probably talk his ear off when he gets back about how cool it'd been, seeing Eddie play. Maybe Steve had been a little jealous too, and if Eddie had the guts to admit it, maybe he could too when he gets back. They continue up the walkway, until Nancy tells them to stop, holding a hand up. Both the cage door and the door to the trailer are open. Nancy steps inside first, peering around the inside of the trailer, Steve and Robin on her heels. The only sound is the creaking metal of the jury-rigged gate. "Should we--?" Steve doesn't let Robin finish the sentence, instead opting to shout "Dustin? Eddie!" to the silence of Eddie's trailer. When no response comes, he jogs past Nancy to the gate, peering up into their Hawkins, glaring at the absence of the make-shift rope. He calls again, but no answer comes. "Where are they? And how exactly are we getting out of here?" Robin poses, eyes wide as Steve turns to her. He gives her a shrug and heads back outside, frantically looking around the eerie replica of Forest Hills, eyeing the trailers as if one of them holds any answers. Then he spies it; a small hunched form a block up the road.  "Shit," he mutters, and he can hear Nancy and Robin following him outside, but his legs pick up speed until he's nearly at a sprint, all but nearly forgetting about avoiding the vines, hopping at the last second over quite a few until he closes in on Dustin, practically skidding on his knees next to him.  "Dustin, hey, hey what--" He wants to ask what happened, but all he can let out is a muttered curse. His eyes land on the body Dustin is leaned over; bloodied, shirt ripped, eyes closed.  Not breathing.  "What happened? Are you hurt?" He waits barely a second for a reply but Henderson doesn't even look up, only sniffles, and Steve grips his shoulder. "Dustin, are you hurt?" he repeats more forcefully. "No," Dustin finally offers with a trembling shake of his head. "No, yeah, I-I don't know...They-" Dustin quivers, takes in a shaky breath and runs a bloodied sleeve against his eyes. "They got in. And we tried, we tried to keep them out, tried to hold it but there were so many. They got inside, so he... he didn't come back through with me. And I didn't get back in here in time, I--" He let's out a sob and Steve feels a hand against his shoulder.  "Steve, we should go," Nancy says quietly, casting a sad glance at Eddie before she tears her eyes away, folding her arms around herself.  He gives her a quick nod and tugs at Dustin's shoulder, but Dustin tears himself from his grip. "Dustin, we need to go,” Steve tries to protest, but Dustin doesn’t meet his eyes. "We can't, we cant just leave him!" Dustin sobs out, his hand fisting tighter into Eddie's vest.   "Listen to me Dustin, we gotta' go--" "He didn't run. He stayed back to keep me safe, Steve, I-I tried to get back to him, I tried, but I was too late, he was hurt and I couldn't help him- I couldn't help him, I should've done something--" "Look at me," Steve says with a shake of Dustin's shoulder, and when he doesn't, he grabs him by both of his shoulders. "Look at me, Dustin," he demands again with another shake until he pries Dustin's eyes away from the grisly sight. "This is not your fault, alright? This is not your fault," he repeats again, empathically. "There isn't anything you could've done. We need to go, he wouldn't want you to stay and put yourself in more danger, alright?"
