New(ish) Comics:
Batman #151: Zdarsky writes a competent Selina using her car burglar skills in this. Proof positive that Bruce & Selina make a solid investigative team.
There’s also a Tini Howard Harley Quinn backup, sigh.
Gotham City Sirens #1: I was mostly sampling this because I do like Selina and I enjoy Ivy, but a little Harley goes a loooong way.
Hmmm. The plot is a fairly weird and sort of forcing the three together, plus it looks like their main antagonist is going to be Punchline. That's...not exactly convincing me I'm going to enjoy this.
Blue Beetle #11: And that's the wrap for this series, as it's cancelled. I do wish that DC had given Trujillo one more issue to finish on #12, because it was clearly plotted as 2 6-issue arcs. So this issue is your classic "we shoved two issues of plot into one and ALSO threw in some pages of the future story we were drafting for year 2 because we liked it and wanted to show it off". Which means it reads as terribly disjointed: two separate relationships are announced by their participants; every page feels like a separate plot point, which normally would have some context and lead in; and things are hurriedly tied off without explanation. I think it probably would have gone more smoothly to read if Trujillo had left a few more threads hanging (like the Jaime/Ood'Li relationship, the Reyes family visiting, and whatever he was trying for with Traci and Nimue), but I get the desire to shove everything in so you can say you 'yeah I planned that!' and get the credit. I'll miss this. I would have liked to see the kids starting college together.
The Boy Wonder #4: oooh this is the Talia issue. I enjoyed the structure of how this was put together; echoing Talia's childhood against Damian's childhood and setting up the story of cycles of behaviour and the manner in which each of them chose to attempt to reach outside of the League's teachings. And they made different decisions! Talia chose to turn back towards the League, while Damian here is shown reaching out to change - BECAUSE he received that extra support from his brothers, which Talia did not get. It's just crunchy and really interesting framing and talks to a lot of things, because yeah. Talia did end up in a situation where she was pregnant, and her father and her lover were in opposition to each other, and she had to make a call about where she wanted to be, and where she'd raise that child. And she chose to stay with what she knew, rather than reach out and leave and tell Bruce and turn her back on her father. And that's an understandable decision she made, even if was probably the worse decision for all of Talia AND Bruce AND Damian.
Birds of Prey #12: mind empty, DinahBabs hug telling her "I love you. Never do that again!". Okay that aside this is still really good? It's a wild Xanthe appearance! I do agree that Kelly Thompson need to take a breath and slow down on trying to get to play with ALL the toys in terms of characters, but also I fully know if I were given a BOP run I would also have a cast list of at least a dozen characters who I wanted to play with, even if it was unwieldy.
Shazam! #14: Freddy has a lot of emotions and reminds you that he keeps it bottled up a lot of the time unless you're in his head. Also I enjoyed that Campbell has looped around to add Uncle Dudley back into the cast, after setting him up over in Power of Shazam; not only does he bring a lot of energy of his own but I think his thing of being unpowered and still fighting is going to link in well with the fact that Freddy, Eugene, Pedro and Darla are also still unpowered.
Plastic Man No More #1: okay, this is interestingly creepy. I honestly don't hugely care about Eel O'Brien, but it makes his condition fascinatingly horrifying plus leans into the fact that Eel's often used as a joke character. Even while on the League. Even by other characters on the League.
The Warlord #63: this week in Skartaris Travis Morgan and Mikola Rostov are off to see Jennifer to find out if she can cure his lycanthropy. Mikola brings up Mariah, because she was his student and lover, and Travis is like...oh yeah! Still trapped in the past.
At some point you'll get to come back to the story, Mariah. I believe in you. Hopefully you are busy spreading the good news of Communism among all the various gnomes in early Skartaris.
Also they drop in to see Aram's kingdom, where Shakira is spending all her time as a cat, and some fabled people who can talk to animals are visiting. They end up kidnapping Mikola.

8 October 2248
When I was a kid, my family bounced around a lot. I probably spent more years on ships going between stations than I did in any real towns or cities. By the time I became an adult though, my mother decided to settle down in Venus orbit and hasn't left since. Neither have I, except for a few extended vacations, and neither have most of my siblings or our kids. We're spread out over a half dozen stations, but it's only a few hours hop between towns so we get together fairly often. I think I've been to visit my mother and her husband almost twice a month for the last decade or so. My middle daughter's looking to move to Luna in one of the next two or three transit windows. And she wants me to go with her. I think I want to. I haven't really talked about it with the rest of the family. I'll miss seeing them in person, but I need a change in my life and I think moving will be a good start for that. And it isn't like we won't have other ways of getting together. Or not, if that's how it works out. My question isn't whether I should go or not, or whether I should tell my family before I do. My question is how long can I hold off telling my family? -One foot on the dock
Well at the very least, you can hold off until you and your daughter have actual plans rather than a vague window of "maybe we'll go sometime in the next five Earth years." Other than that, I'd say it's better to tell than be found out, so once you start actually making your preparations might be a good time. And the final decent choice is to give just enough notice for a family get-together that everyone could attend but not enough notice for anyone to turn it into a big production. Say 2-3 weeks before you leave?

Some thoughts on How to Prey on your Master.
It's a webcomic that I've been reading. It follows two characters more or less. Dame Elle or sir Elle who is a lady knight. Her family is in some debt but she has a fiance she loves very much, and a job as a knight, specifically a royal one to the Princess Pippin who is her fan after Elle saved her from a kidnapping. Elle has a fanclub(whose president is the second older princess Charlotte) and is fairly popular with the lady's and is serious and sincere about her job...which also seems to have made her a bit of a target by people who are jealous and wants to bring her down.
A example we start out with is her fiance gets stolen by someone she had thought of as a friend being tricked by sone lies but also just being a weak willed weenie despite being at least a semi good fiance before(which I can't tell is better or worse than the fiances who are complete irredeemable from the get go).
She has friends in high places who get pissed on her behalf...and a friend she hadn't known she had is Theo. The mad dog that gets assigned to her to both reign in and to be her Aide in the knight order. He seems related to the royal family ir the high end of royal peopke at least which is kindof fun because he is technically below her as she is his boss...but also he has alit of influence and he gives ZERO shits on how he is perceived. Ergo one of the reasons he has this reputation is he killed a bunk of people at the academy...yet tge mystery is ge and Elle haven't really talked as much as Elke is aware of at least yet he is clearly fond of her and calls her master. Often comparing himself to a loyal 🐕.
We generally see Elle solve crimes and get caught up in shenagans while dealing with her broken heart while also dealing with this strange new aide of hers who helps distract her from that broken heart.
Honestlybher ex fiance is trash but I do like how we don't move from him TOO fast. She did after all genuinely like the guy and had her trust broken and Theo isn't her type at first.
What I enjoy the most is its clear theory genuinely respects her...but he also isn't really hiding his personality. He's pretty honest about how he feels despite how we don't understand him at first. And she is fully aware of his crazy...but unlike other male leads who are JUST POSSESIVE and crazy....we end up finding out something interesting.
Theo actually has memories of a previous timeline of the people we are in...and we see that he didn't just instantly fall for her. It seems someone tricked him into opening a door and letting bad guys in by using that his father was 'missing' which was actually a plan someone had to blame Elle...and Elle actively chose to take the fall to protect his life despite them having only talked and handfull of times...and he visited her everyday while he looked for who was actually responsible which resulted in them growing closer and falling in love mutually. We also see that aspect of her protecting others not just applying to him but many others inbthe timeline we are in as well while she isn't just a push over.
We also see he isn't a natural mad dog. All the people he killed at the academy were people directly connected with the bad end Elle recieved in that first timeline. As in the end she refused to let him take the fall and got her head chopped off while everyone talked shit about her honor...which is why our male lead in the timeline we follow is very particular about defending her...both honor wise but also trying to cut the death flags at their roots. And to HIM she Is both his love and a dear friend who protected him even when they were barely aquantiences and who he wants to live a good long life. The dude is literally traumatized by holding her severed head from the original timeline...and while he can cross what's normal at times....
Its always clear he cares about her opinion and that he isn't just being protective for no reason...but he also will let her fight her own battles as well and wants her to use him so things won't overwhelm her.
What I find most fascinating is in that first timeline he wasn't a mad dog. He had actually ended up the princesses bodyguard knight after saving pippin from a kidnapper in the other timeline...so we see certain things differ...for example pippin and Charlotte who in the timeline we follow absolutely adore Elle to the point they try to fight for time with her and admire her don't care about her in the original timeline.
Its jaring...especially because Charlotte clearly has admiration and a big crush on Elle in our timeline ...yet we find out she was one of the voices saying she witnessed Elle killing a girl named Lauren(which wasn't true) and she didn't care about Elle in the other timeline...she seemed closer to Theo....but it'd hard to say exactly how she felt because Pippin while adoring Elle as her bodyguard in our timeline...seemed to banter and not be enthused about Theo being her bodyguard.
Charlotte seemed more positive toward Theo in the previous timeline but it doesn't seem to have a crush on him unlike how she responds to Elle.
What I find most fascinating is in our timeline he semi threatened Charlotte to get assigned to Elle and she understandably doesn't have a good view of Theo...seeing him as a brute...but we also see Charlotte is clearly jealous and hostile toward Theo who doesn't hide his interest in Elle...but what's fascinating is Theo will make jabs at Charlotte inregards to Elle...which Charlotte had picked as as Theo judging or testing her love for Elle which frusterates her.
THEO isn't wrong to do this as he knows Charlotte didn't care about Elle in the previous timeline and had been one of the people to put Elle on the route of getting her head chopped off...whoch gets really interesting to think about since THIS Charlotte hasn't done anything wrong...so did she get tricked somehow where she sincerely thought she saw what she saw....or was she malicious and trying to take Elle down?
it gets even more interesting because Charlotte does genuine feel possesive of Elle to the point when Theo implied a mark on his neck was from Elle, she slapped Theo for thinking he could touch 'her pure' Elle...even though if that scenerio WAS true it would actually mean Elle likes him back and deemed him worthy herself. And that Charlotte was disregarding Elle's choice.
It raising certain thoughts. Was Charlotte as possesive of Theo in that past timeline like she was with Elle in this one?
it means Theo who was in the position Elle is now has been worthy of her the whole time even if no one knows that in this timeline and it's ironic people judge him in this timeline who praised him so much in the past. And its fascinating because he has a mutual love both in that previous timeline and a developing one in thepresent with Elle, unlike Charlotte who thinks she is so devoted but who Theo does have more right to judge due to the previous timeline...and that Charlotte gas been worried what Theo has planned for Elle...when he has been the one with the most pure motive to protect her.
There seems to be some parallel in how Charlotte and Theo admires Elle and her sincerity and strength when both of their families aren't the best...but Theo's motives are stronger.
And it gets even more interesting because Charlotte has a mad dog herself who was a servant she picked up off the street when she was a child who Clearly is in love with Charlotte. We see in this timeline her white haired servant is DEFINITLY jealous of Charlotte's crush and slight obsession with Elle so there IS a chance he is meddling to bring Elle down out of jealousy in this timeline(since Theo suspects him, and he seemed to be possibly involved with the horse incident where in the first timeline her horse was drugged and it caused her injury in a tournament).
Not to mention motives will have changed over timelines...though it seems Charlotte's servant is involved with setting up one of Elle's friends with human trafficing by telling her it was spices...as he has this mask he is connected to. And we have discovered he was most likly either rapes by her father(it's unclear as Charlotte remembers finding him coming out of her father's room and if her guilt comes from trying to ignore the signs something was wrong...which could be hinted at her father being a pedo) or it was her dad recruiting her servant to get trained into doing dirty work like killing...and later Charlotte seems to have a realization and trys to stall him from going by throwing herself in the lake...and her younger brother seemed to have called him a monster after seeing him kill people).
So now it raises did her servant have anything with taking down Elle since he has a motive in this timeline...but maybe it was Charlotte's Das who ordered it...but it also raises why was she targeted in the original timeline?
Not to mention things HAVE changed between the timeliness which doesn't sooth Theo who doesn't have all the details on how things got that bad from the first timeline let alone in this changed timeline.
He was able to save her from being used as a scapegoat by using his mad dog reputation to just go in and take her away...and ge saved her by switching horses with her so she wouldn't be thrown off abd injured...she DID get accuses again like she was in the original timelibe it seems but Theo used himself to take her place by confessing he did it instead or at least make sure it's clear if they are going to pin treason on her tgey can't since he is a better fit for what they are trying to use.
Her friend got stabbed by the dude in a mask...implied to be Charlotte's servant where she passed out and can't testify that neither Theo or Elle stabbed her. We also have another mystery as on of the orinal victims 'Lauren' is still alive but seems to erreily look like one of the knights who seems to need to keep a 'low' profile for safty reasons.
We also have hints the queen might have had a different baby before Charlotte and pippin and youngest boy as we see her concert remembers when he went to meet her the first time she was pregnant which seems to have been part of why they have a rough patch(outside of how he was isolated and struggled to find with outside of being her love interest since he was engaged to her from a young age).
Just....so many thoughts. I love Theo who clearly adores Elle even if I don't know how he has memories from the previous timeline and how far he is willing to go for her because if how far she went for him....
At the very least he kept her from going to jail and getting caught up in a conspiracy like last time...but this seems to be a slightly different conspiracy than before....
I'm susptious of Charlotte...but especially her servant since she had wanted Theo gone...but she seems to have realized how important Theo is to Elle from how despondent Elle is for Theo taking the fall.
Motive wise it seems the queen doesn't like her much...but there is some royal involved with human trafficing...we also have to wonder if tge motive is to make Pippin look bad since she'll be the future queen in charge...but I have to wonder why Charlotte I'd treated do poorly in her family as well.
Did Charlotte throw Elle under the bus to protect her servant in the first timeline? But then who is Lauren? Did Laueen really die in the first timeline or was that involved with the secondary redheaded aide who has a sort of romance withe the light blue haired knight who hangs with Elle?
The mystery is fascinating...especially with tge implications of the first timeline...like Elle's brother in our timeline...how did he respond in the first timeline to her death?

So Over It
Premise: Cassie meets Ethan’s plus one and makes a long overdue decision.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Fluffy Angst. Words: 990 Trope: With Someone Else
A/N: Set in Book 1, after Project Christmas Wish and a few weeks before Miami. Submission for @choicesaugustchallenge Day 24 prompt “You wear [insert option] well.”
Tumblr media
Cassie Valentine enjoyed her morning coffee, inhaling the life-affirming scent while seated on the stuffed chair beside her bedroom window. The world outside was snowy white and cold; inside, it was colorful and warm.
She wasn’t due at work for another few hours and was enjoying the quiet time. She had learned in the last six months that the hospital could take over your life. And it was important to create balance when she could. Today was one of those moments.
She glanced down at her phone when it pinged, a smile spreading when she saw who it was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few days later…
Cassie leaned her elbows on the nurses’ station and took the weight off her feet. She bit back a yawn, exchanging a commiserating look with the tired-looking nurse on the other side. She picked up the iPad and reviewed the lab results for her next patient, sighing in relief that there wasn’t anything to worry about.
There were still twenty minutes until midnight and the beginning of a new year. Elsewhere in the hospital, there might be signs of celebration. Here in the ICU, the mood was quiet and somewhat somber, keeping with the types of patients and severe cases the unit managed.
She absently looked around, wondering if there was time to grab a coffee from the residents’ lounge, when her eyes fell on the woman sitting on a chair in the hallway. That in itself wasn’t unusual since the ICU often had patients’ families waiting at odd times. But she was dressed in a beautiful long red gown with windswept light brown hair, a lovely pendant necklace, and matching earrings.
There was something exquisite about her style and, Cassie thought, a classic beauty that likely made heads turn. The woman must have felt her watching because she looked up from her phone and stared right at her.
Abashed at getting caught, Cassie half waved, smiled and slowly walked over.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to stare,” Cassie said by way of greeting. “I love your dress and couldn’t help admiring it.”
The woman smiled graciously. “Thank you. I had very different plans when I put it on earlier tonight.”
“You wear it well. Are you visiting a relative?” Cassie asked, curiosity taking over.
“Ah, no. My date is a doctor, and he was paged for a patient consult,” she explained. “We were at a New Year’s Eve party, a fairly swanky affair.”
“Oh, what rotten luck,” said Cassie sympathetically. “And now you’ll miss the countdown.”
“I suppose.” The woman nodded before throwing Cassie a laughing look. “Between you and me, I think my date was relieved to get the page. He’s not into social events. I’m Dana, by the way.”
“Cassie. Hopefully, you’ll get a chance to salvage what’s left of your night,” she said.
Dana winked. “Oh, I intend to. The way he looks in a tux?” She fanned herself dramatically.
Cassie grinned, enjoying the unexpected girl talk.
“Valentine.”
Cassie stilled at the deep voice calling her name. She glanced over her shoulder to see Dr. Ramsey walking toward them. Her heart skipped a beat at seeing him wearing a dark wool coat over a tuxedo that looked like it was made for him. The tailored lines accentuated his physique, and she got a sinking feeling in her gut as she connected the dots.
“Dr. Ramsey,” she said formally, trying very hard to hide how much the sight of him affected her.
“There you are. All done?” Dana inquired, coming to stand beside Ethan.
“Yes,” Ethan nodded. “Just give me a few minutes to confer with Dr. Valentine, and we can head out.”
Cassie kept a smile on her face as she exchanged goodbyes with Dana. All the while, her heart was breaking inside at the thought of Ethan dating someone else. And more, if what she inferred from Dana’s comments was accurate.
She followed Ethan to the nurses’ station, where he gave her instructions about the patient he’d been paged about. She listened absently while a thousand different thoughts crowded her brain.
“Is that clear?” She tuned back in to see Ethan watching her warily, one eyebrow raised in question.
“Yes, Dr. Ramsey,” she said. “I’ll monitor the vitals and page you only if the numbers fluctuate beyond the normal range three consecutive times.”
“So, you were listening,” he commented.
She made a face but didn’t rise to the taunt. Cassie started to turn away when he put a hand to stop her. He quickly glanced around, making sure no one was close enough to listen.
“Can you check in on Naveen?” he said quietly. “I had hoped to drop in, but with Dana….” He shrugged.
“I understand, Dr. Ramsey,” Cassie said, her voice whisper soft. “I’m due for a break in thirty and will head down then.”
“Thank you, Cassie,” he said gratefully, clearing his throat and stepping back. “Goodnight then.”
She nodded, unable to get the words out past the lump in her throat. Her imagination was running wild, thinking of how Dana and Ethan would spend the rest of the night together.
Cassie watched Ethan help Dana with her coat, the other woman looped her arm through his, smiling up at him, and then they walked out the double doors together. She thought Ethan looked over his shoulder at her for a second before the door closed behind him.
But maybe that was wishful thinking. And perhaps she was deluding herself to think there could ever be anything between them. Ethan had been clear about his feelings that time when they tested the fMRI machine.
“Any intimate feelings are just neurochemical responses to heightened stress and frequent exposure to each other.”
Whatever she felt, what she thought she had seen in his eyes last week, it was an illusion. Nothing more than a crush on her medical hero.
And it was time to grow up and get over it.

Imagine being Azula’s friend but secretly dating Zuko behind her back
Tumblr media
One of the first things you and Azula bonded over was your annoying brothers. Azula told you how her brother had stolen one of her best friends away from her and you related to that. Your twin brother was none other than Sokka of the water tribe, who was also very popular with women. Most of the women you knew liked him, from Yue to Toph to Suki to Ty lee! It sometimes felt like you were the second attraction in a friendship and so you and Azula quickly became close over your shared frustrations.
Then....you betrayed her.
Well, betrayal is a bit dramatic but maybe not given how upset she'd been when Mai and Zuko started dating. You knew that had been hard for Azula to process.  How difficult it had been wondering if her friends really liked her or just wanted access to her brother. So when you started liking Zuko you didn’t plan on acting on it at all. Then Mai broke up with him.
Zuko was around at yours quite often, whenever he visited the water tribe he stayed in your home and when you visited the fire nation he extended the same hospitality. So throughout the years, you just naturally got closer and closer until....it happened. You started hanging out just the two of you and these occasions felt very date-like until Zuko just outright asked you out. You liked him and told yourself one date was fine, what harm could a single date do? But then as you kept seeing each other and one date soon progressed into many many more you knew your time to do the right thing and tell Azula you were dating her brother was approaching.
However the idea of doing that idea terrified you. You guessed Azula wouldn’t take it well and didn’t want to lose your friendship with her because of your relationship with Zuko. You wouldn’t break up with Zuko just to make her happy but you also didn’t want to lose Azula’s friendship, so when Katara’s birthday arose you were fairly nervous. There was going to be a large party and all of Katara’s friends were coming...which included Zuko and Azula. You hadn’t been together with everyone since you and Zuko started dating so you had no idea how it would feel. The whole time you and Zuko would have to convincingly act like you weren’t a couple and not make anyone at the party suspicious of the two of you. So when Zuko’s ship got in you fixed your eyes on Azula and tried not to stare at him any more than usual. You greeted him formally and didn’t admire him as you usually would. You fell in step with Azula and decided just to focus on her. It wasn’t hard, you were best friends and very close...however fate was not on your side. You got seated across from him at dinner which felt like some sick punishment and struggled not to get lulled into conversation with him. It didn’t help that Zuko was in a playful mood. He kept making comments about the things you’d done on your date and then sending you sly looks across the table. When you met his eye he smirked blatantly and you lightly kicked him under the table. That only made Zuko chuckled and look adorable so you sighed and decided to just keep your eyes down the whole time to survive dinner.
However, Zuko had no intention of stopping his teasing. After dinner you set about preparing the party for Katara tomorrow and having sent Sokka, Aang, Suki, Azula and Toph on their assigned jobs turned to your job of decorating. You were hanging streamers in the living room when you felt a hand curl around your waist. “Need some help there?” Zuko asked moving closer and he leaned up over you to hang it. “I could have done that myself” you smiled turning to face him and Zuko shrugged “I know you could’ve, but then I wouldn’t have been able to do this”. Zuko gently kissed your neck trailing down to your collar bone making you sigh. “Zuko...stop” you said faint heartedly and Zuko sensed that smirking "I don’t want to and you don’t want me to either, I can tell by how softly you said my name" he smiled "it’s been so long since we’ve had any time together". Your skin erupted in goosebumps and a shiver went down your spine as Zuko pressed closer against you. But you knew how badly this could end if literally anyone walked in. So swiftly you grabbed Zuko’s hands and twisted your way out of them. You held them tightly in one hand so he couldn’t try and slink around you again and used the other to make him look at you "Zuko we can’t okay, not on this trip. God knows i want to, i’ve missed you too but there’s too much that could go wrong i’m sorry". Zuko sighed but nodded his head "don’t worry i understand". Zuko’s shoulders sagged and you knew your insistance on keeping this quiet was difficult for him. "Thank you for understanding" you said hugging him quickly "i know it can’t be easy for you and I appreciate the effort you're going to for me". Zuko smiled resting his head on top of yours "it’s fine, i’d do a lot more for you if you asked but promise me it won’t always be like this....we will tell everyone soon?". You gulped but nodded pulling away "i promise, i will tell Azula...soon!". Zuko nodded “I believe you” and let his hands drop away from you. Not a moment later Sokka and Aang appeared in the room making the two of you jump. “Zuko just the man we need! We were thinking of making an ice sculpture, fancy some fire bending?”. Zuko nodded “sure” and with a last glance to you left the room.
Hours later the party preparations finished you returned to your room which you were sharing with Azula for her visit. “Sokka made me blow up balloons” she said angrily “something about fire benders being full of hot air”. You smirked at your brother’s nerve when Azula’s next sentence wiped it off your face.  "Also I think Zuko’s dating someone again" Azula said softly and you paused. "Ow really?" you asked and she nodded "he’s been spending a suspicious amount of time in the southern water tribe lately. Lots of visits which he claims are diplomatic but I can’t work out what he actually does here! He doesn’t know that many people and so it got me thinking, y/n do you think your brother and mine....". "No Sokka's still with Suki" you said shaking your head. Azula sighed “and it’s obviously not Katara, she and Aang are basically married, have you seen him hanging around anyone else? He doesn’t know many people so it should be easy to spot". You paused pretending to think but were really just trying to buy yourself time. "Honestly i don’t pay much attention to him when he visits" you said cleverly covering your back "but i will from now on and let you know". "Thank you y/n" Azula smiled. You smiled back relieved Azula didn’t suspect anything and let out a large breath you’d been holding for this entire conversation. You were now more than ready for sleep and got into bed hurriedly. You laid your head on your pillow and closed your eyes utterly exhausted.
"Goodnight y/n" Azula called and you nodded. You were very sleepy and after a long yawn smiled "good night Zuko".
You realised the name you’d said seconds after it came out of your mouth.
You froze
As did azula.
"Did you just call me Zuko...". You blinked "did i? I’m sure i said Azula". Azula was quiet for 2 seconds before she shot up "it’s you!" she cried "you're the one my brother’s dating!". "No Azula that’s crazy!!! We'd just been discussing Zuko, that’s why he was on my mind!". Azula shook her head "you're lying! I can tell by the tone of your voice! You’re the new girlfriend aren’t you?". You sighed "Azula i’m sorry i was going to tell you...". "I can’t believe you" Azula yelled and suddenly the door opened. "What’s wrong?" Sokka and Zuko asked bursting in “we heard yelling” and Azula glared. "You! Couldn't just have Mai huh? Had to take another one of my friends? How about when you’re done with y/n you try things with Ty lee?". "Ow she told you...." Zuko frowned awkwardly. "No i worked it out!” Azula spat “Y/n accidentally uttered your name because she’s so lovesick" Azula cried "you both make me sick" and she strode away slamming the front door hard as she exited the house.
After Azula left you all looked at one another unsure what to do or say next. "So...you two are a thing?" Sokka asked and Zuko paused "yes...is your reaction going to be as bad as Azula’s or can i go deal with her?". Sokka shook his head "go deal with her before she burns the village down”. Zuko went to move past Sokka when your brother put a hand to his chest "but come back and see me after, me and Katara will want to talk to you about dating our sister". Zuko surprisingly looked intimidated and nodded "I'll be right back". "Zuko wait i should come too" you called "this is as much my fault as yours". Zuko nodded "let’s go" and led you outside into the cold night after Azula.
You found Azula trekking in the snow and as she wasn’t in proper shoes you gained on her quickly. “Azula!” you called and she jumped. She looked around and glared “ow look the happy couple, how nice of you to grace me with your presence”. Zuko rolled his eyes “only you’d be so attention-seeking to make this about you”. “Attention seeking? Who’s the person who can’t form his own friendships or respect boundaries? No always have to date my friends, is it some weird way for you to gain power over me? A sad way to boost your ego?”. As Zuko and Azula went to square up to each other you stepped between them. “Alright enough the both of you! Zuko please go back to the house, i’ll handle this”. “But she...”. “Zuko please” you said sharply and he nodded “fine” and with a glare left. You watched him go before turning back to Azula. You’d been about to suggest you go home given that Azula was surely freezing out here in the middle of the night but Azula broke into a rant. "Everyone leaves me for him" she cried "Mai! My uncle! Mother! Even my father...after i was smarter, a better fire bender, more loyal and younger he still gave Zuko every little chance and only crowned me after Zuko literally ran away! When will i be good enough people don’t just choose him without a second thought for me?". "Azula i didn’t choose Zuko over you! Just because i like Zuko doesn’t mean i don’t like you still". "That may be true but this changes our friendship completely, it did with Mai! People always prioritise their partners over their friends so i’ll be second best once again". "Are you kidding?" you asked "Azula now i need you more than ever! Relationships aren’t when you ditch your friends, they’re when you need them the most! Who else are you going to go to for a break or a nice getaway? Who else is going to support and love you in only the platonic way a friend can? Who else can i complain about Zuko to when he annoys me or we fight?" you asked "they’re all things you need your friends for! Desperately and that’s going to be the same for me". "But when Mai dated him...". "But i’m not Mai" you smiled softly "Azula we are good friends, i won’t sideline you because of this. You mean just as much to me now as before i started dating Zuko". Azula huffed but you could see her melting. "So...how about we go inside, get some warm milk and talk a bit more about this huh?". You offered Azula your hand and she took it but she didn’t stop there. Azula threw her arms around you and hugged you tightly. "I’m partly doing this for the cold but thank you" she said softly "nobodies ever tried to make me feel supported when they've chosen Zuko, they just tell me to deal with it but you’re the first to try and reassure me and so i know you mean it, to still be my friend". "Of course" you smiled "you're my best friend!". Azula smiled and linked her arm through yours "i like that!”.
Zuko stared in awe as you and Azula returned grinning. "How did it go is everything okay?". You nodded "your extremely cool sister is fine with it". "Yes i thought this would be a great way to have an inside scoop on you zuzu". "She’s kidding i won’t talk to her about you...a lot". Zuko blinked "okay if everything's okay then i should go speak to Sokka and Katara, they’re waiting for me in the kitchen". Azula smiled "that’s a good idea, when you come back zuzu find me, i have some threats about what will happen if you hurt my best friend". You smiled at Azula and stepped to Zuko "good luck but don’t worry Sokka’s all bite, Katara’s the one to look out for but she has a big heart, just tell her how good a time we’ve had and you’ll be fine". "Good tips, any for my sister?". You smiled "Azula is one i have not worked out yet" you grinned "but i’m sure you’ll manage, you are the firelord after all". Zuko smirked and you patted his shoulder "after your appointment with my brother and sister and then your sister....you could always come find me in your room?". Zuko smiled "is that my motivation for surviving this?". You shrugged "you can think of it as that" and stepped away from him. Zuko watched you before sighing "alright let’s get this over with” he said loudly and strode towards the kitchen.
You turned back to Azula who raised an eyebrow at Zuko’s sudden confidence and she frowned. "Do i even want to know?" Azula asked and you shook your head "no". “Ow and don’t worry if I’m not in our room tonight”. “Euch Y/n!” Azula cried and you shrugged “what? I didn’t say why”. “I know why” she sighed before she smiled “at least I can have your bigger bed”. “Be my guest” you smiled, you had a firelord to get reacquainted with.

Tumblr media
jungwon
you were walking home from work, as usual, with headphones blasting the recent hits and jungwon walked behind you from a distance, just like he’s been doing for the past couple of weeks.
you never suspected anything and it didn’t feel weird. whenever you looked behind you there was either a guy with sweet, handsome features or no one. you never thought twice about it since you lived in a fairly crowded area. sure, the recent news was about attempted murders and kidnappings and you were told to not be outside during a certain hour, but it felt safe walking home. the same thing you’ve done for years. why would it be different now?
jungwon quickened his pace as he wanted to get a closer look at you. he’d only been able to zoom in on the pictures taken on his phone, but the times you were in front of him were so much better.
“i must have you. we belong together, i can feel it. i’ve felt it since the first time we met at the café.” he sighed and stopped himself, not wanting to be caught just yet and letting you walk up to your apartment.
Tumblr media
heeseung
the two of you had been friends for a very long time. it all started in second grade when he came to school without fruits in his lunchbox (he always had fruits with him instead of candy or other snacks). he began to cry and you, being the sweet hero that you were, handed him some apple slices and grapes, “there you go. now please stop crying, it’s a bit annoying.”
ever since then, he told you he’d make it up to you. and he did. several times. but the one thing never leaving his mind was that he had to marry you, no matter what or who stood in his way.
recently, you’ve been hanging out with his friend jake a bit more often. you didn’t want heeseung to be mad at either of you, so you just told him that you were hanging out with a friend. he didn’t believe you and that’s why he followed your every move after school.
it’s been like this for a few weeks and even though you’ve seen him a couple of times, you haven’t brought it up, thinking he was just there coincidentally. but oh boy how wrong you were.
“jake doesn’t have a chance against me, everyone knows that. im her number one priority as she is mine and i will be the one to get her heart.” he muttered for himself while slurping the smoothie he ordered to stay looking after you.
Tumblr media
jay
you were working with enhypen as their stylist, making sure everything was right for the next comeback. jay had known you since trainee days when you took your first steps as a stylist and was excited that you were gonna work with them now. you were still learning things about the industry, but your colleagues had an open mind thinking that they needed someone younger’s thoughts.
just like you, jay had grown up so much since the last time you saw each other. he, of course, never forgot you and had been stalking your social media accounts at least once a week. you never knew that though, and he wasn’t planning on telling you.
stalking on the internet soon came to be stalking in real life. he always kept an eye open on your schedule, planning to “bump into you” by accident and hoping that you were gonna visit them for measurements even though everything was mostly finished.
“oh, hi y/n! what are you up to?” he put his hand on your shoulder and held it there for a moment before letting go, “i have a meeting about the concept in a few, how about you?” you returned the question, not wanting to sound impolite, “just the usual… training.” he smiled and you nodded as you walked off to the meeting, “i’ll see you later, jay.”
Tumblr media
jake
you’d never met him in your life, but something told you you’d seen him before.
you were working the late-night shift at the restaurant and were quick to take the orders. you didn’t really care about the guests, just having one goal in mind and that was to go home and sleep.
a guy came in, looking like the lead in a drama, and sat down by the bar. you were immediately caught up in his handsome features, from the way his eyes shone in the dimmed light to his bright smile. “what would you like today, sir?” you asked as you got ready with the notepad. he looked directly into your eyes with that sweet smile, “you.” you burst out laughing, “oh yeah? that was funny.” it took a second before you collected yourself and the guy still didn’t take his eyes off you, “i can recommend the burger and the steak, but if you want more vegetables, i’d recommend the salad.” you explained.
jake ordered the steak and picked up his phone after you left, wanting to take some pictures of the place. of you.
later that night, when he received the tab, he wrote down your name in his phone and wrote you a cute little note on a napkin, “loved the conversation, might have to steal you from work someday.” and added his phone number, hoping you would call.
Tumblr media
sunghoon
you were at the ice rink to support a friend and give them some assistance. sunghoon immediately made his way over to you who was standing by the side all alone.
cold air whooshed against your face, making your cheeks a bit more red, “hi, who are you? i haven’t seen you here before.” his smile was sweet, “im here with a friend.” he hummed, “well, if you want to hang out later, i can make some time.” you blushed and gave out a nervous chuckle, “mhm, we’ll see.”
the two of you exchanged numbers and have spent a lot of time together since then. what you didn’t know, however, was that sunghoon had pressured your friend to bring you to the ice rink that day… he had seen you around town before and did his research. you were more difficult to find, so he went for a different approach: kidnap your friend and threaten them to help him get you.
“you’re friends with y/n, right? i want you to get them to the ice rink.” they nodded hastily, trying to respond, but his hand was covering their mouth, “i know the two of us have talked before, i know you usually hang out there, so just do me a favor and get them there.”
Tumblr media
sunoo
working at a busy café in the middle of seoul made you see thousands of people every day. sunoo, however, only wanted to see you.
he came in at least once every day to order coffee and have small talk. when he came in your colleagues immediately gave you a heads up, “the sweet sunoo is here again, miss girl.” they laughed and you walked out the storage room with a bright smile, “thanks guys.” sunoo took off his sunglasses to get a better look at you, “hi sunoo.” you greeted as you re-tied the apron, “do you want the usual? or maybe try something different?” he smiled, “the usual, thank you.”
his gaze never left your face and you’d gotten quite used to it. still, what made you a little worried was his lockscreen. you swore it was a picture of you taken from afar. you didn’t dare to question though, thinking it would start something you didn’t want to experience. but, what you didn’t know was that he’d been stalking you for the past couple of months. not only grabbing coffee and having small talk but following you to your home, getting to know your daily routines and who you hung out with as well.
“if you want to visit the company, you know where it is. just call me and i’ll take you on a tour.” he laughed and gave you a napkin with his number on it. you looked at it for a minute before locking eyes again, “thank you.”
Tumblr media
niki
as a trainee at belift there are a lot of things to do. practice singing, practice dancing, study for the upcoming tests in school, and so on and so forth. you’d been at belift for about a year and recently gained a lot of attention from the producers as your monthly evaluation really stood out from everyone else.
but it’s not only the producers who are interested. niki from enhypen has been keeping an eye on you from the day you arrived, wanting you in his life one way or another.
you’d just finished dance practice and were on your way to fill up your water bottle as you bumped into him. “oh, hi y/n. you good?” with a black cap and oversized black hoodie, you barely recognized him, “niki?” he nodded with a short laugh, “oh, im good.” you began, “i just finished practicing.” you motioned to your bottle, still waiting to be filled with water, “mm, alright. we’ll talk later, yeah? i have a meeting.” he explained and gave you a wave goodbye.
you thought he was just like any other guy at the company: hardworking, sweet, and motivated, and you were right, but he was hardworking, sweet, and motivated for you as well. taking every chance to talk to you, touch you, making you want to be with him. but that would take some time for you to figure out, he made sure of that.

Washing Machine Heart Part 1. (Erik Killmonger x OC)
This is unedited so please have mercy on me in the notes 😭
Nahla knew she didn’t mean a thing to him. Next to being a mercenary, Erik was a player. He came and went as he pleased, spent his nights with more than one woman, and didn’t feel a single shred of regret whenever his girls would pour out their hearts to him.
Nahla knew she didn’t mean a single thing to him, yet she still somehow fell in love.
It was a painful realization. One that she came to during one of Erik’s many long term absences. It was another sleepless night for her and she was sitting in bed with her laptop open to her right and her keyboard directly in front of her. For the past week, the same melody had been on loop inside her head. A broken tune that conveyed so much sorrow that it nearly brought her to tears whenever she hummed it. Each day after she got home from work, she would add onto the melody bit by bit, putting in different instruments and sounds to create a beautiful symphony.
When it came time to write lyrics for the song, all she could envision was a tune about unrequited love. The same unrequited love that she had been feeling for a while.
It wasn’t until she put a name to that feeling when she finally realized how she truly felt about Erik.
She decided to try and keep things suppressed for a while, hoping that her childish feelings of romance would disappear after a few days.
They didn’t.
When Erik returned a few weeks later, she didn’t, know how to act. The man made it known that he was not committed to anybody, and Nahla was no exception. On the rare occasion Nahla would catch a glimpse of him on social media, she would see him surrounded by women who looked as if they could be models. Women who were leagues ahead of her. The photos never failed to resurrect her insecurities. They made her question why Erik even bothered to give her the time of day. Yet those insecurities melted away whenever he came to visit her.
Flash forward to the present, and Nahla found herself laying next to Erik’s naked frame in her bed. The faint sound of her washing machine echoed throughout the house, giving a sort of rhythmic banging as her shoes tussled around inside. The night was still fairly young, having only been a few minutes past seven, but all of the plans that Nahla had for that evening were discarded the moment Erik showed up on her doorstep.
It didn’t take much for his words to lull her into bed and for his lips on hers to enrapture her. His low, smooth voice was like music to her ears, and her moans being music to his. Each praise that left his lips was like a toxic lullaby. Nahla knew that he had repeated the same words to dozens of women in the past, yet in the moment, they made her feel as if she were the only woman in the world.
“You feel so good around me baby…”
“You don’t know how much I missed this pussy.”
“Say my name so everybody know who’s fuckin’ you right.”
Thinking back to his words sent shivers down her spine. She was wide awake, restless and too excited to fall asleep. It was rare for Erik to stay after having sex, let alone fall asleep before her, but her inner turmoil prevented her from falling asleep.
She turned back to look over at Erik, taking in every aspect of his being as if it were the last time she would see him again. No matter how many times she laid eyes on him, she would never be able to find the words to describe how beautiful he was. He had a smile that could light up a room and warm eyes that made her heart flutter each time she looked into them. It often left her wondering why exactly he even entertained the thought of her when he was way out of her league.
A heavy sigh left Nahla’s lips and she threw the covers off the lower half of her body. She looked back at Erik one last time while putting on her robe, making sure that he stayed asleep. Slowly and quietly, she crept out of the room and down the hall to her makeshift studio, closing the door behind her and turning on the lights. She used her studio as an escape from both the real world and her own mind, and right then she needed an escape from both. Turning on her equipment and opening up her laptop, she opened up the file that held her latest project. The one that helped her come to her realization in the first place. She made sure the speakers were low as to not wake Erik up and pressed play, listening to her voice blend with the gentle melody.
She had only written a few lines so far and could feel the next verse just on the tip of her tongue, but lyricism had never really been her strong suit. Muttering random words under her breath, she opened up the notes section on GarageBand and began writing down whatever sounded nice, replacing and adding words where she deemed fit.
“Might as well give it a go,” she sighed, getting up from her chair and walking over to the small corner where her mic and the rest of her recording equipment was set up. She pressed record on an empty track and began singing the second verse, her voice coming out soft and almost broken in contrast to her usual strong, belty tone. She was tired, both physically and emotionally, but she couldn’t walk back to that room. Not with him still laying asleep in her bed as if the two of them were a couple.
After a few more takes, she had finally gotten her voice warmed up enough to where it didn’t sound completely like shit and she walked over to her work station to edit the track on top the music.
With her mind now completely engulfed in her music, she didn’t noticed the sound of her toilet flushing or her bathroom sink running down the hall. She didn’t notice the sound of footsteps leading to her studio and her door opening slightly.
It wasn’t until the feeling of a hand snaking its way around her neck drew her from her work as she jumped in her seat while clutching her chest in panic.
“Whatchu scared for? It’s just me,” Erik muttered, his voice still laced with drowsiness. “What are you doing up? Any other day you’d be knocked out.” His fingers gently squeezed at her neck and he leaned down to plant a kiss on the top of her head. It was weirdly intimate of him.
“I couldn’t sleep so I decided to work on something.” Nahla spun her seat around to face him. He had on a pair of low hanging shorts. She recognized them as being one of the pairs she bought for him whenever he decided to stay over. She mentally scoffed at the thought; buying clothes for a man who she wasn’t even in a relationship with.
“You’re not leaving?” She asked. It had just dawned on her that, miraculously, Erik was still there.
“Nah. I haven’t seen you in a while so I figured I’d stay for a little bit.”
The sentiment made her heart flutter but she quickly grounded herself back to reality. She couldn’t afford to get her hopes up.
“So, what are you working on?” He asked, his arms folded across his chest as he looked past her and at the open editing software on her computer.
“Oh. Well I had a melody that was stuck in my head for a while so I put it down and write lyrics. I lowkey wanna find a mini orchestra to record it though.”
“Well can I hear it?” He suggested.
Nahla’s eyes widened and her heart skipped a beat. Despite knowing each other for the better part of two years now, this was the most he had ever expressed genuine interest in her music.
“U-Uhh, I’m not sure… I get really sensitive about my stuff. Plus it’s not what you’d expect it to be,” she said, swirling her chair back around to face her work station as she hesitantly placed her hand on the mouse  and moved the cursor over the “play” button. After taking a deep breath, she played the song and closed her eyes as she waited for it to be over. Throughout the entirety of what little she had to play, Erik was silent, giving no response, comment, or critiques. When it was over, she reluctantly turned around to face him.
“So? What do you think?”
“Yeah, I can definitely hear an orchestra going behind that. Maybe start off with piano first, then bring in strings or some shit during the hook,” he suggested, walking over to the other chair in the corner of her studio and sitting down.
“Okay. Thanks.”
For about an hour or two, the two of them stayed up in her studio talking about random things while sharing a blunt together. They eventually migrated back to the bedroom and made their way beneath the covers together, Nahla’s body molding perfectly into Erik’s as they cuddled.
“Nah, I’m deadass. I thought I had locked his cage, but he always finds a way to get out,” Nahla giggled, referring to her pet chameleon who always managed to get out of his cage. “I remember a few day ago I had just woken up and went into the kitchen to get some juice and I see him inside the sink just sitting there. Then he have the nerve to look up at me like ‘what are you doing here?’ No sir, what are you doing here.”
Erik laughed softly while shaking his head. “Nah, I don’t think I could handle an animal just freely roaming my shit like that.”
“You get used to it after a while. I was low-key thinking about getting a snake too, but I gotta figure out where to put the tank.”
“Oh hell nah. If you get a snake, I’m not coming by anymore.”
“What?! You used to be a whole Navy Seal and you’re scared of snakes, E?” She asked, a bit surprised that he even shared that information with her.
“Girl, I don’t know how you can even stand them things,” he mumbled, “slithering around and shit. What if it gets out when you’re sleep and starts choking you?”
“Then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” she giggled, earning an eye roll from Erik.
Though it didn’t seem possible, she pressed herself against Erik even harder, somehow managing to get even closer to him. Resting her head in the crook of his neck, she had a perfect view of the many scars and keloids that littered his body. She could tell some of them are new. Whether or not they were accidental or self inflicted, she didn’t want to know.
It was times like these where Nahla wished that her outlandish fantasies of romance weren’t fantasies at all. Having never been in a real relationship before, she constantly longed to be loved by someone in a romantic sense. Though she knew that Erik probably never thought of her as more than a fuck buddy, it was nice to feel his warmth underneath her. Even if it was an illusion, it was nice to imagine him as her lover while he was holding her close.
“What’s on your mind?” He pried, letting out a deep sigh before closing his eyes and relaxing his muscles.
“Where do you go when you disappear?” She partially lied. Even though that wasn’t what truly was on her mind, it was still a question that lingered over her head for a while.
“That, I can’t tell you ma. At least not right now.”
She wasn’t satisfied with how curt his reply was. Sitting up, she supported her head with her hand, her elbow buried into the pillow beside his head as she peered down at him.
“You can tell me,” she pried. A childish grin spread across her face. “If it’s something illegal I promise I won’t tell.”
Erik peaked one up up at her, a smile of his own taking over his featured. He pushed his hands behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. “Mm… Maybe I could tell you a little bit. I don’t even know where to begin though without you thinkin’ I’m crazy.”
“I won’t think you’re crazy.”
“You say that now.” There was a pregnant pause, and then, in the most serious tone ever, he said, “I’m apart of African royalty.”
“So there’s this country in Africa called Wakanda. At first glance, it seems like a small lil third world country, but in reality, they’re the most advanced civilization on the planet. They got this metal called Vibranium that allows them to all sorts of things, but they keep it hidden from the rest of the world.”
“How? And if they kept it hidden from the world, then how do you know about it?”
“They have a dome that surrounds the entire country. It’s practically impenetrable. And the only reason I know is because my father was the prince. He was sent here on an undercover mission in America but quickly saw how shitty thing were here, so he wanted to change it. “
“Wait, your father is the prince of an African country?” Nahla couldn’t believe her ears. Despite being secretive and mysterious, she knew that Erik wasn’t one to lie. After all, what could he possibly gain from lying about something as far fetched as this?
“Was. He was killed before he could enact any change; by his own brother no less.”
She could hear a pain and vulnerability in his voice that she’d never heard before. Now she definitely knew that he wasn’t lying.
Erik’s face had turned to the side in a fruitless attempt to hide the tears that welled up in his eyes. He’d never brought up his family or much of his life before he met her in a conversation, and now she could see why.
Hesitantly, Nahla reached up to wipe away the tears that left his eyes. “So you plan on going back and getting revenge?” She pondered. It would make sense why he’d want to stay under the radar,  having no social media accounts, no permanent phone number, and constantly disappearing for months at a time. If he wanted to infiltrate an entire hidden country, then he’d have to be the closest thing to a ghost a person could be.
“It’s on the list,” he replied, sitting up in bed while resting back against the headboard. “But, my main goal is to change the world. Wakanda has technology and weapons that people can’t even begin fathom. If our people were able to get their hands on that kind of fire power, we wouldn’t have to worry about the White man oppressing us any longer.”
The sadness that was once present in his eyes had long disappeared, instead being replaced with a burning passion. It filled her with joy to see him get passionate about something, but it also put her on edge. Nahla knew what his plan implied, and she didn’t put it past him to sacrifice countless lives in order to see his vision come to life.
Staying silent, she simply nodded, too afraid that she’d say the wrong thing if she opened her mouth. Tearing her gaze away from the man, she began contemplating on everything she had been thinking about prior to his arrival. Her feelings for him were still unwavering, but now she was starting to ponder on whether or not being with him was a wise decision. It didn’t take being a genius to know that Erik’s path was a set one. He was a determined, goal-driven man, and when his mind was made up, there was no convincing him to go back on his decision.
If she followed him down that path, she wouldn’t be able to turn back.
“Do I scare you?”
Nahla looked back up only to be met with obsidian eyes boring straight into her deep brown ones. His question threw her for a loop, no doubt, considering how Erik was never one to be considerate of other people’s feelings.
“H-Huh? What do you mean?” She knew exactly what he meant.
“That look in your eyes… You’re scared of something. What is it?” He demanded in an eerily calm manner.
Attempting to spare his feelings would be a futile decision; Erik read people like his favorite novel. Yet, for some reason, Nahla had no control over the words that left her mouth.
She almost never did when she was around him.
“Nothing. I just get a bit spooked in the dark,” she chuckled.
Erik simply blinked at her, a look of uncertainty and doubt dancing around in his eye before he shrugged it off and laid back down in the bed, facing her completely.
“You should get some rest. Goodnight,” he said softly, his eyes never leaving her.
Upon hearing his words, Nahla felt an immense tiredness wash over her as if he casted a sleeping spell over her. She glanced over at the clock and noticed how it was nearly 4 AM. She had only three hours before she needed to get up and get ready for work.
She was tired, but fear kept plaguing her mind. A fear that he wouldn’t be there when she woke up. Or, even worse, a fear that she had dreamt the entire night.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be here when you wake up,” he whispered.
Nahla wanted to believe him, so she did, closing her eyes and drifting off to sleep.

                Prologue:  A Powerpoint, Really?
If you had told 16 year old Y/N that she’d be working at the FBI, she would’ve called you batshit.
Not only, did you not have any respect for authority or any inclination for rules in that matter, working for the FBI was never in the forefront of your mind. But when given the option of Jail or a full time job with benefits, it was fairly easy to make a choice. You remember the first day when you met your work partner and now best friend Penelope Garcia or specifically the day she caught you.
You were waiting tables like you did every weekend to stay afloat. Today was unreasonably slow so you were just finding small things to do. That’s when she came in, an extremely brightly dressed woman, sat at the bar of the diner.
“Hi, how can I help you?” You smile at the woman who looks up at you and smiles.
“Yes, I’m looking for the Emerald City.” She says, smirking at you. Your face drops, you knew what she was talking about.
When you started hacking it was only supposed to be a one time thing. You grew up poor, spent most of your life poor so when you saw your childhood home was set to be demolished to build a fancy new headquarters for Scotty Realins, an upcoming asshole tech CEO, without a cent going to your parents.  Something in you snapped. You had already been pretty decent at code and you flirted with a couple of guys in your STEM classes to learn how to hack so you would say you were pretty good at this point. So you hacked into the website and made sure all the Revenue for that day actually was wired to lower-income housing. At the end of the day, it was only a couple hundred thousand dollars but what was pennies to Scotty Realins changed some people's lives.
So you started doing it more, to different companies under the pseudonym OZ. The money always went to different places that needed it whether it was paying the rent for a bunch of families or anonymous large donations to food banks or soup kitchens. You gained a bit of fame in the hacker community as a modern day Robin Hood.
All good things come to an end though. And the end was standing in front of you in clunky, rainbow colored jewelry.
“You don’t look like a cop.” you say, crossing your arms.
“I’ll do you one better.” She says, pulling her FBI badge out, showing it to you briefly. You curse under your breath. “I’ve been following you for a while, OZ. Though I wasn’t expecting the man behind the curtain to be a woman. I will say, having my computers route back to a loop of “We’re not in Kansas anymore.” everytime I tried to track your IP was impressive. I couldn’t even be mad about it.”
“Clearly not that impressive because you found me.”
“Still took me longer than usual, which is saying a lot.”
“This is a really long winded conversation if you’re just here to arrest me.” You say, taking off your apron. No use in keeping it on if you were going to be in handcuffs soon.
“That’s because I’m not here to arrest you. I’m here to offer you a job, to work under me as a Tech Analyst in the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI.” Penelope says.
“And if I don’t want to?”
“Then you’re going to want a lawyer and my very good handsome friend outside is going to arrest you. You’re smart and you have a chance to help people which is why you started hacking in the first place, right? Please don’t make me do that.” She looked at you pleadingly like she really cared and didn’t want you to go to prison. You didn’t say anything but something told you she’d been in the same boat as you before.
“Hmmm…. I’m tired of waiting tables anyway.”
So you uprooted your life and moved from Philadelphia to Quantico. Garcia took you under her wing and pretty soon the two of you functioned in her batcave like a well oiled machine. You could do without the constant gore that filled your screens but at the end of the day, you loved what you were doing and you wouldn’t change that for the world.
The team was an added bonus, it was nice to have your own little found family. Garcia, of course, taking on the role as best friend mere days after your first meeting. You met Derek Morgan right after you agreed to take the job, he’d been there to arrest you and was very glad he wouldn’t have to do that. He told you often about how you reminded him of his sister and he regarded you in the role of younger sister from that day on. The next person you met had been Aaron Hotchner, your new boss. It took him a couple of weeks to warm up to you, you guessed he had a difficulty trusting new people and when he would call you guys for information he would always ask for Garcia instantly instead of you, not very trusting in your skills yet. Though that changed when you had been the one to track down the Unsub once.
Rossi was easily won over when you told him about your Italian side of the family, specifically your grandmother who loved to cook and left you a lot of recipes. You and him often went back and forth in sharing dishes. Emily and JJ had also been easily won over with one bottle of tequila and a regrettable girls night.
Then there was Dr. Spencer Reid.
You had a lot of opinions on Dr. Reid, most of them weren’t good. It wasn’t like you hated him in fact, you’d consider him a friend but the two of you seemed to butt heads on well, everything. Both of you needing to be the smartest in the room and neither of you wanting to admit when you’re wrong will do that though. You still respected Spencer though, he was an extreme asset to the team and he was your best friend’s other best friend so you couldn’t really hate the guy.
You also didn’t have to like him.
So you had a good job, good friends, a nice house to live in. You were finally happy, content even. So why did it feel like something was missing?
The something missing came in a stroller pushed by JJ the next week.
The last case had been rough. Really rough. So while the team was on their way back you and Garcia hatched a plan for JJ to come visit from maternity leave and surprise everyone with the baby. While you guys were waiting for them to land, Garcia wanted to show JJ something she had gotten her godson so JJ asked if you could watch him and feed him until she got back, which you obviously agreed to. As you were feeding the child his bottle, and his ravioli sized fist wrapped around your finger you realized what had been missing.
Fuck, you wanted a kid.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You told Garcia first, it slipped when she noticed how off you were being. You wanted to have a kid bad now and you knew you didn’t want to wait. Penny tried to convince you that you’d “find the right person” but let’s face it, with this job, long term relationships were few and far inbetween. Plus you didn’t need a man, you had a good job and insurance, you knew you could provide a child with a life full of love it deserved. So you made an appointment at a fertility clinic. As the doctor was talking to you about your options, you felt yourself feeling more and more down about your decision and that only increased as you looked in the book of sperm donors in front of you. You looked at too many serial killers daily that it made you uneasy, carrying a stranger's baby. Maybe Garcia was right and your best bet was to wait for ‘the right guy.’ Even though you really didn’t want to.
You walked into work later, a little sullen. Heading immediately towards the coffee machine. Penelope, who had been at Derek’s desk, makes a beeline towards you.
“So how’d it go?” She says, smiling. “Did you make an appointment to be baby-fied?”
You sigh. “I couldn’t do it, Pen.” You say, frowning. “I just-- We see so much here that I don’t want to accidentally end up with a sociopath’s baby because I couldn’t wait.”
“But you don’t want to wait, do you?” She says softly, empathizing with you.
“No, I don’t.” You sigh again, finishing making your cup before walking back out into the bullpen. JJ had brought Henry again for the others to see on the slow paperwork day. You tried not to look bitter but it was like she was flaunting the one thing you couldn’t have, even if it was unintentional. You watched as she handed the baby to Spencer, who instantly smiled and made faces at the laughing baby.
“Spencer is actually a surprisingly good godfather.” Garcia says, smiling at the exchange in front of you. “Kinda makes you wonder what he’d be like with his own baby geniuses.” She says before walking over to the group and scooping her godson out of Spencer’s arms, Spencer still held on to his fist with his pinky, smiling down at the child.
“Yea…” You say, to no one in particular.
You had an idea. A probably bad one.
-------------------------------------------------------
You were sitting in the coffee shop, nervously fiddling on your laptop while waiting for Spencer. You were surprised he even agreed to meet with you for coffee though you were sure he was just doing it out of curiosity because you told him you had something important to talk about. You weren’t even sure if you were going about this the right way. Hey Spencer, I know we’re not even friends but how would you feel about fathering my child? God, this was going to be terrible.
You looked up when you heard the tell-tale bell on the door indicating someone walking in. Spencer gave you a small wave before going to the counter to get a coffee. You took that time to nervously sip yours. Your heart was beating a mile a minute, it was now or never.
“Hey.” Spencer says, when he finally gets to the table, coffee in hand. “Why are you all the way in the corner?”
“This isn’t really a conversation I want overheard.”
Spencer tilts his head confused at that. “So what is the conversation we’re supposed to be having. I asked Garcia but she seemed to also have no idea.”
“Yea, I didn’t tell her on account of this maybe going extremely bad.” You say, before sighing and turning your laptop around so Spencer could see the Powerpoint screen you have on it. When he reads it,  he chokes on his coffee.
“A Powerpoint, really?” He chokes, still coughing around the coffee. “Y/N, what is this?”
“This is Reasons Why You Should Make a Baby With me.”
“Yea, I got that from the title, Y/N.” He says, still shocked. “Is this a joke?!”
“I wish it was, Reid.”
“Can I at least ask why you thought a Powerpoint was the best way to ask?”
“Because I felt you’d be more inclined to consider it if you knew I spent time on a presentation.”
“That’s true.” He leans back, taking a sip of his coffee, gesturing for you to continue. You hit the next slide.
“Ok, reason number one is we both want kids.” You say, looking at him. “Garcia told me the other day that you were talking about how much you wanted a kid and I also want a kid.”
“I did tell Garcia that.” He muses.
“Reason two, an offspring between us would probably result in another genius. As you know, you are smart.”
“Yes.”
“And I am smarter.” You say, Spencer opens his mouth to protest but you keep talking. “A child between us could probably be the next Einstein.”
Spencer nods and you continue. “Reason three, I’d be a great mom.”
“That’s a debatable fact.”
“No, it’s not. You’ve seen me around kids, have I ever given an inclination that I wouldn’t be?” You ask, he shakes his head. “Plus, I happen to think you’d be a great father. Which brings me to Reason 4.” You say clicking through the next slide. “If you don’t want to be involved in raising that’s fine. I’m perfectly fine raising the child myself an--”
“What?! No!” Spencer says, sitting up. “If I do agree to have this baby, which I’m not completely doing yet. I want to be involved, I want them to know I’m their father and that I didn’t abandon them because I know what that’s like.” He says, seriously. You nod, already knowing this about Spencer.
“Reason 5: I’d be the perfect platonic co-parent, I won’t ask you for anything unless it’s pertaining to the child and if you decide that later down the road you want your own family, I’d be supportive and help you along the way.”
Spencer nods. “We’re never home enough for a baby.”
“That’s where you’re wrong because I’ll be here. I mainly stay here anyway and if there’s ever a case where you need a tech analyst to fly out, Garcia’s already agreed to have it already be her when I floated the baby idea around last month.”
Spencer hummed, silent for a second. “You really want a kid, huh?”
“Yes.” You say.
“So much so you’re asking me?” Spencer says, matter-of-factly. “A Coworker you barely speak to?”
Well, when he says it like that.
“Yes. I’m asking because while we don’t get along the best you are still one of the most compassionate, understanding men I know. And I know that if I have to raise this kid with somebody, you would love them just as much as I would.” You say, Spencer nods at that. “So, please?”
Spencer sighs. “When’s your next appointment? At the fertility clinic?”
You didn’t even want to ask how he knew about that. “Next tuesday.”
He nods. “I’m going with you.” He says, standing, pulling the strap of his messenger bag over his shoulder. “This isn’t a yes.”
“It’s not a no, either.” You point out.
“No, it’s not.” He says, leaving you behind in the coffee shop with a huge grin on your face.

BREAKING UP WITH THEM.
Characters: Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki & Satoru Gojo
Type: Headcanons/Small one-shot | GN!Reader
Warnings: Heavy angst/slight mention of sexual content.
Shrimp Notes: I was just casually thinking of writing angst, hehe.
Yuji Itadori
He noticed that you were being distant for quite some time. The majority of the time, his classmates would see both of you close together, it was impossible to separate the both of you. Though, there came a time where you didn't bother to stick close to his side; the usual excuses of "I'm busy" would be thrown out there.
Everyone knew that Yuji had a partner, though it became a shock when you didn't come by the school every once in a while. You didn't have any cursed techniques, but that didn't stop Yuji from falling in love with you.
It was hard ignoring his text messages, but it was best that you'd tell him that you were occupied with your own studies and your own part-time job; it was hard for Yuji to not see you as often, but it was for the best.
You didn't want to break up with him. Truly you didn't. Though, the life of dating a jujutsu sorcerer was dangerous. Nonetheless, he was the vessel for a dangerous curse, and you didn't expect your long-term boyfriend to fall into this scary and risky path, and you were also dragged along with it.
The times when Sukuna would pop out during your dates with Yuji became frustrating, you only wanted to spend time with your boyfriend yet the curse that was within him had to keep teasing and messing with you. It was tiring.
"What?"
His words were barely audible as he stared at you, hands clutching onto the bouquet of flowers that he was hoping to give you since he hadn't seen you in a week (which felt like forever to him). You didn't know what else to say, and you only sighed, placing your hands on his cheeks. You loved him tremendously, it was hard to let him go; the life of a sorcerer was not for you, and you couldn't endanger yourself any longer with the life that he was going down in.
"I will always love you," you spoke, and you felt your bottom lip quiver. Three years of dating this boy will now end, and your heartstrings tugged at the thought. Maybe this wasn't the best decision for you, but you knew it was to guarantee your safety, and your unhappiness in the relationship was growing. "I'm sorry, but I can't do this."
"We can work this out," Yuji raised his voice, clearly desperate to hold onto you. "I'm sorry you feel this way but you know I'll protect you, right? I know that I can be too much sometimes but I want to stay!"
"I can't put myself through this, I can't," you explained. "It's too dangerous for me."
"I'll never let anything happen to you, you know that right?"
"I'm aware," you responded. "But it's best that we go our separate ways."
"I don't want this to happen, please."
"I'm sorry."
It was hard for Yuji to move past the breakup. Many times, he skipped his private lessons with Satoru, and he'd lay in his bed, listening to music that reminded him of you. It would end up with him crying or holding back tears while falling asleep for a couple of hours.
Nobara would try to drag him out of his room but it was pointless. She'd joke about how she'd carry her shopping bags this time, but it was no use to get him crawling out of his bed.
Megumi left trays of food near his door. Eventually, Megumi would barge in sometimes, telling Yuji to try to come to training every so often, but Yuji had difficulty getting out of the bed. Even Satoru would knock every so often and try to give some advice that relationships were tough, but losing you was tougher.
The fact that you weren't in Yuji's life anymore; you weren't there to hold him and to help him through his mental struggles, and that he'd do the same for you when you'd freak out over final exams or the moments when you called because your favorite character died; he missed those moments, he missed you, and you weren't planning on coming back.
Megumi Fushiguro
After finding out that he was a jujutsu sorcerer, the thought of it scared you, but you trusted Megumi with your life. You knew he was capable of handling his own, but when he'd come to see you with bruises and bandages all over his face, there'd be moments where you feared that you'd lose him due to the battles he was in.
While you'd be out on dates with him, he'd get stopped by Satoru with endless calls of a curse that he'd have to take care of. You knew Megumi had priorities, especially with the sorcerer he was, but it was frustrating; you wanted some time with your boyfriend, yet he'd have to leave you every so often to take care of some situations.
Megumi would hardly contact you since he was busy, so keeping in touch was fairly difficult. However, the one night when you cuddled with him in his bed, his arm on your shoulder as he pulled you into his chest, you felt empty and that the feelings you'd get when he'd do small affectionate gestures like this were vanishing.
For quite some time, you knew you were slowly losing feelings for him and that the relationship of a regular human and a jujutsu sorcerer was very difficult. It was hard to fall into the life of someone who was consistently endangering himself and now your life was sucked into that kind of path; you didn't want it. You just wanted a normal, happy life, but when there were a lot of injuries, battles, and dangerous fights, you couldn't find yourself being on that worrisome path.
When Megumi would text you, you'd find yourself responding in bland and hollow texts. You'd make up excuses to not attend any of the dates, such as exams coming up or that you needed to attend some club meetings (Megumi knew you though, he knew that you weren't engaging in so much activity since you always made time for him when he could barely try to squeeze in time for you).
He saw it coming, but he didn't expect it to hurt this much.
"I can't be with you anymore," you spoke, tears falling down your cheeks. Maybe this wasn't the right decision, something good can work out, but it had been months. There would be times where Megumi didn't talk to you for a week or more because you knew that his teacher, Satoru Gojo, would be assigning him these missions, and he'd be too tired to talk to you. The consistent neglecting, yet you couldn't blame him, he was busy and he was growing into a stronger sorcerer every day. "I can't do this."
"I don't want to lose you," he responded, not bothering to make eye contact. It seemed as if he was starting to become lost in his thoughts. "I'm sorry I haven't been the best boyfriend, I just... I never stopped thinking about you."
"I know, but..." your voice trailed off, and you fought back a sob. "It seems as if you aren't putting any more effort into us, and it has been so long; I know you're busy, but I can't keep up with this. The life you have is dangerous and—"
"Every time I'm out there, I think about you," Megumi explained, finally making eye contact with you. "I don't want to lose you. I really don't want that to happen. But—it seems like it is happening."
"I'm sorry, 'Gumi, but I don't think we can do this."
You really had to call him by that nickname. Within seconds, Megumi burst into tears and then hugged you tightly, you felt yourself crying as well and he held onto you as if this was the last time you'd ever see each other. He never found himself to be so desperate before, clinging onto you, and he rested his forehead on your shoulders, pleading inside that you'd change your mind. But he knew you; you had your mind set in stone, and although this hurt the both of you, it was for the best that you'd say your goodbyes.
"I'll never stop loving you," Megumi spoke, words barely audible as he let out a saddening sigh.
"I know," you responded.
Megumi didn't come in contact with a lot of his friends, even his older senpais worried for his sake since he didn't actively try during their training sessions. Satoru would take note of this and attempt to play around with the boy's thoughts, hoping Megumi would try to smile, though when did he ever with his sensei?
Satoru would purposefully avoid having Megumi go on missions, though at some point, Megumi should have been able to come out of his little shell at some point. However, Megumi would look at old photos of you two together, and then he struggled to avoid the memories from flooding in.
He didn't want to admit it but he'd try to stop himself from texting you, not to ask for you back, but he still worried about your well-being after you both said your goodbyes to each other.
Once Megumi began trying in his training sessions, it surprised everyone, even Satoru, but he was glad that his closest student was finally coming to an acceptance prior to your breakup with him. It took Megumi some time, but he was able to accept that you were no longer in his life; still, it would've been a lie if he said that he never thought about you.
Nobara Kugisaki
Knowing her, she'd always make time for you. Whenever she was free or even taking a break from training, she'd send you photos and text messages to keep that close connection. Although, you were losing that sense of touch, and you tried your hardest to stay close to her, but when she decided to move to Jujutsu Tech and be away from home where you both met, long-distance became difficult.
Most nights, it would just leave her falling asleep on calls or her talking about her shopping trips. You'd sit and listen, laying in your bed, wishing she was there next to you, but she was far away now, and you were no longer physically close to her.
The consistent responses of your text messages began to die down; your heart felt hollow, you wanted to talk about how you felt, and when you did, Nobara tended to brush it off, saying that it was because you weren't used to a long-distance relationship. Perhaps she was right, but that connection was slowly fading.
She'd talk about visiting you constantly; she said she'd try to be home for the weekend but it never happens. When you tried to talk about how you felt, she could only sigh and apologize, though it became a cycle. You became used to the false hope of her ever visiting you - it hurt you, but it wasn't her fault. Jujutsu sorcerer life wasn't easy.
You'd ignore her messages and only respond dryly, you'd make excuses that you couldn't attend the calls that you had a ton of homework, or that you weren't feeling good. She'd try to encourage the both of you to talk more, but it always led to her falling asleep from exhaustion, and the sight of bandages on her faces always made you feel so empty.
"I think we should break up," you spoke, words barely audible.
She stared at you, hands clutched on her blankets and it was hard for you to look at the webcam of your laptop. You knew that this choice had to be done; you were losing that spark in your relationship, and you tried to reignite it so many times, but it was difficult due to her life as a jujutsu sorcerer. You weren't as unique as she as in that aspect, she had abilities while you were a student and only worked as a part-time associate. You knew both of you had different paths, different desires, different places to go; one life was normal yet one was dangerous and filled with life-threatening risks.
"N-No," Nobara stuttered, quickly grasping onto her phone before it fell down into her sheets. You could hear her fighting back a sob immediately, and your heart broke at the thought of her crying. "I'm sorry, am I not trying hard enough? I promise I will call you more, next weekend, I will actually come home and—"
"No, stop," you interrupted, fighting back a cry. "I have talked about this. About us. But you're too busy with the curse fighting and stuff. You and I both know we are opposite people here."
"It doesn't mean it can't work out!" Nobara cried out loud.
You gritted your teeth, wanting this moment to be over and done with. So badly, you wanted to end the call right away, but you couldn't just leave the conclusion to be empty and lost. "It's hard being away from you," you explained. "Long-distance is hard; you don't try to keep up with me in calls."
"I try to talk to you as much as I can..." she retorted.
"I don't feel the same way as I used to, Nobara," you sighed.
She was crying; of course, she was. You wanted to hug her, but you knew that you couldn't let unhappiness consume you anymore. You wanted to move on from this, and you knew it was best that the both of you moved on, really.
"I'm sorry," you said, breaking the silence.
She didn't say anything in response for a moment, but then she softly spoke, "it's okay... I love you, I always will," and then you sighed, before wishing her goodbye and that you wished that she would always be safe wherever she was.
The phone screen went black after the call ended, and then you were left with an empty heart, though you knew you had made the right choice for yourself.
Nobara found herself snapping at her classmates every now and then when they tried to have her train, even if it was a simple jog around the track or when they asked her what kind of food she wanted to eat, she'd snap at them. Though, they understood why, and even Yuji would offer to pay for her food or take her out shopping (even hold her bags for her) but she'd refuse or avoid the offer.
She'd check her phone, hoping you'd contact her but no messages or any ring of a notification. She knew it was wrong, but she'd change her ringtone to a song that reminded her of you just so she could try to feel a little close to you.
When Nobara would break down crying out of nowhere, Maki could only try to persuade her to block your number so she could move on and Inumaki only provided a bunch of back rubs as a sign of comfort. However, Nobara wished you were the one comforting her.
She still kept photos of you two together; back at her home town and that big smile on your face kept her going. Eventually, she'd realize that you made the choice for the sake of yourself, but she still missed you endlessly. Needless to say, she was still planning to find you if she ever went back to where she grew up in.
Satoru Gojo
You were dating the strongest sorcerer and you knew that would lead to consequences. But when there would be weeks of him not contacting you due to his overseas travels, it became rather difficult to keep that connection with him. Sure, he'd text you that he loved you here and there, but Satoru was quite the busy man and you accepted that, but the connection you both had was fading out.
Satoru loved you unconditionally, always wanting to call you after he completed several missions and went through multiple lessons with his students, but he fell right to sleep once he hit the bed. It left you alone at night, you trusted him, but you were slowly fading out of the feelings you had for him.
There would be a few moments here and there where he'd say he would make it to your important events, but he wouldn't come. Your dinner with your parents, one of your anniversaries, your birthday, your graduation—he was too busy with his job and his lifestyle; you understood it, but you couldn't deny that it hurt you.
Usually, he'd surprise you when he'd come home, but he'd be exhausted to do a lot of other activity unless it was sex or a small bit of cuddling. You wanted a movie night or to go out for dinner, though he didn't have enough strength for that. Sleeping in bed together was most of what you got, and it became tiring and mentally draining to not receive so much of what you had hoped for.
You felt bad; Satoru provided a lot of gifts, affection, and he comforted you even during your darkest days, but there was something missing. You wanted to reignite the feelings you had for him, but it was slowly dying out; you were both different. You couldn't see any curses, yet he was able to, and he was risking his life every second of each day; both of your paths were different, and you couldn't deny that.
"You're breaking up with me, aren't you?"
He spoke first, and with that look on your face, he got the answer already. He hoped that you weren't serious but he knew you all too well. Satoru knew that this moment was coming, and he dreaded it; he tried to avoid it, but with who he was and what he does on a daily basis, his personal life got in the way of the relationship. No matter what, he did his best, and he knew that.
"I-I'm sorry," you choked out a cry before he came up to you and then hugged you tightly, and you started to rethink your decisions, but you knew this was for the best.
"I know," Satoru sighed, fighting back his tears. "I don't want you unhappy, it pains me to see you in so much pain."
"I wish you could do more," you cried.
He sighed again, deeply this time. "I'm sorry too. I am trying. I always have."
This was a hard conversation to have and so badly, you wanted it to be over, yet you didn't. You still loved him and he loved you. He held onto you tightly, he knew how your mind worked; once you made a decision, you were going to be sure of it, and Satoru knew that as a grown adult, you were capable of making your own decisions. Still, his heart continued to pain as each second passed by.
"I'll always love you," Satoru whispered.
"I will always love you," you responded.
And this was the last time that he'd ever say these words to you, or at least he would try to keep it that way.
Satoru sat on the bleachers most of the time while his students trained and he was lost in his own thoughts. He'd think about your whereabouts and he'd have an itchy feeling in his thoughts, wondering if you were in any danger since he always came to your rescue when a curse appeared and you weren't aware of it or even when someone made you uncomfortable at a store.
He'd look at his phone, occasionally texting you if you were doing alright and the conversation was either dry or you wouldn't respond. Part of him felt childish for thinking that you'd try talking to him again, but Satoru knew that it was best for him to avoid contact with you.
Some days, Satoru was more cheerful than ever, mostly because he tried to keep up that annoying persona of himself to make his students look at him like they wanted to punch him. At least that cheered him up the slightest. But when he was out and about, either assisting his students or exorcising a curse, he'd be reminded of the little things that you liked. If a car was your favorite color, he'd think of you, or the times that you said you loved a specific pastry, and just by eating it, he'd think of the memories he had with you.
Satoru didn't want to admit it, but he'd find himself crying every so often but he didn't sob too much. He knew that it was for the best to let you go and that you made the decision to leave. Perhaps he wasn't capable of a relationship for the lifestyle he had. Though whatever it may be, his heart still tugged at the thought of you, and he yearned for a hug whenever you came across his mind—a hug from you, of course.

My Muse, My Valentine [Christen Press x Reader]
Tumblr media
requested by anon: Not sure if you’re accepting any request but can you write a cp x photographer gf where her gf surprised her at man u, like her gf secretly transfer there to be with cp. Thanks
A/N: please ignore some of the inconsistencies this story has with reality :) but anyways... hope you enjoy and have a happy Valentine’s Day (tomorrow) and remember it’s a day about LOVE, whether that be romantic, platonic, familial, or self ❤️
“I’m gonna miss you,” you whine, as you watch your girlfriend pack her suitcase.
“I know, babe. I’m gonna miss you too, so much.” Christen leans down to quickly peck your lips, before continuing to fold her clothes.
You and Christen had been dating for almost three years now, having met after you’d photographed one of the USWNT’s matches. You instantly felt an attraction to the curly-haired forward, your camera always drifting towards her wherever she was on the pitch.
After you’d posted a couple of your photos on your Instagram, which Christen made a point to like and repost, you gathered up the courage to approach her after a game, and thus began your relationship.
With yours and Christen’s busy schedules, it was sometimes hard to find time for each other, but you made it work, sharing an apartment in Portland during the offseason and flying out for matches when you could. But being a sports photographer did have its benefits, as your work often led you to spending more time with your girlfriend and admiring her speed down the field and score goals.
But now, with the pandemic, as the NWSL was struggling to field games,  you found yourself with little work. Christen herself was not quite satisfied with the league’s plan for the season, so when Tobin proposed the idea of going to the WSL, she desperately wanted to, yearning to get back on the pitch.
At first, when Christen approached you with the subject, you immediately opposed, not wanting to be so far from your girlfriend for such a long amount of time. Additionally, with COVID, it would be nearly, if not completely, impossible for you to visit. But after a blowout fight and discussing it further, you realized that this is what would be best for Christen and her career.
“Do you have to go?” You pout, sitting up and moving to the end of the bed.
“You know I do, (Y/N/N).” Christen playfully rolls her eyes.
“Humph.”
“Babe, come on, don’t make me feel worse about leaving you.”
“Then don’t,” you quip, grabbing your girlfriend by the waist, pulling her down on the bed with you.
“Babe!” Christen squeals, as you blow raspberries into her skin.
You lift your head from the crook of her neck, your eyes locking with hers. “I know that you have to go,” you admit seriously. “Doesn’t mean I like it, but I know that this is what’s best for your career.”
“Thank you, (Y/N),” she says earnestly, giving you a small smile. “We’ll text and FaceTime everyday.”
“I’m holding you to that.” You cup her face and bring her in for a kiss, savoring the feeling of her soft lips on yours. “I also know that you’re gonna kill it over there in Manchester. The WSL isn’t gonna know what hit them.”
Christen ducks her bashfully, a small blush arising on her cheeks. “You know I love you, right?”
“Of course, Chris. I love you, too.”
“Good.” She gives you a quick peck, as she gets up from the bed. “Now, either quit bothering me or help me. My flight is early tomorrow morning, and I haven’t even finished packing.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
—————
It had been a little over five months since you’d dropped Christen off at the airport and she left for Manchester. Despite the constant texting and the nightly FaceTime calls, you couldn’t help but ache for your girlfriend. Without her, the apartment was lonelier and the bed felt bigger.
It had helped that your work had started back up, first with some freelance work and then with the NWSL fall series starting, which gave you something to do and kept you fairly busy.
Currently, you were sitting at the kitchen counter, sipping on a cup of coffee, as you edited some photos for the Thorns. Just as you were saving your work and closing Lightroom, about to shut your computer, a ping alerts a new email in your inbox.
Switching tabs, you notice the message is from an unfamiliar address, so you presume it’s a new client. You click and open it, your eyes widening, as you scan the email:
Ms. (Y/L/N),
I noticed your professional portfolio through many referrals, particularly your work form the World Cup. I am writing on behalf of the BBC News Media Centre, and we’re looking for an excellent sports photographer to join the team, specifically to cover the FA Women’s Super League and the Premier League.
Your experience is outstanding, adn your work speaks for itself. I think you’d be a great fit for this role, and I’d love to tell you more about it and hear more from you.
Would you like to set up a phone or Zoom call soon? If so, let me know when you’re available.
Best,
Charles Smith
Director of Media Relations at BBC Sport
You quickly reread the email, and then reread it again, just to make sure you’re not dreaming. This was too good to be true. But you shake yourself out of your stupor and quickly type out a response to set up a phone call as soon as possible.
After hitting send, you shut your computer with excitement and throw your hands up in the air.
“Yes!” You exclaim into the empty apartment, as you throw your fist in the air and jump off the barstool.
Knowing you needed to distract yourself, otherwise you’d just be staring at your computer, eagerly awaiting the response, you decided to go on a run.
Jogging through the city, you think of your girlfriend and your potential reunion if this job offer worked out. You decided that if you did in fact take this position, you’d surprise Christen at one of her matches, hopefully one that you’d be able to photograph.
As soon as you arrive back in your apartment, you make a beeline for your laptop. You anxiously open your inbox and beam when you see Charles had replied to set up a Zoom call at 9:30 tomorrow morning. You excitedly type out pleasantries, telling him you’re looking forward to it.
For the rest of the afternoon, you were in an increasingly good mood. So later that evening, when Christen called you for your routine FaceTime, she could tell something was up.
“Why do you keep smiling like that?”
“Can I not be happy to talk to my girlfriend?” You tease, a huge grin plastered onto your face.
“You can,” Christen trails off, not quite believing you. “But you have the weird giddy look you get when something’s up?”
“Nothing’s up. Just had a good day,” you shrug nonchalantly.
“Okay,” the forward accepts, still eyeing you suspiciously. “Anyways, you know She Believes is in a couple weeks, are you working the tournament?”
“Yup,” you nod and make a mental note to mention that to Charles tomorrow.
The two of you continue updating each other, chatting about topics ranging from what you had for breakfast that day to re-inc’s upcoming drop.
“Alright,” Christen yawns. “I think I’m gonna call it a night.”
You check your phone and see it’s 5:37 pm, meaning it’s almost midnight in Manchester.
“Okay,” your eyes softening at the sight of your sleepy girlfriend. “Good night, Chris. I love you.”
“Love you, too, babe. G’night.”
After ending the call and shutting your laptop, you head into the kitchen to make some dinner for yourself, getting on with your evening.
—————
The next morning, you anxiously await for Charles to begin the Zoom call, nervously bouncing your knee and biting your lip.
“Hi, (Y/N),” Charles greets, his face appearing on your screen.
“Good morning. Or rather good afternoon?” You correct with a light chuckle, to which he reciprocates.
“Well, as you know from my email, we are looking for a photographer to join our team, and from many referrals, you seem to be a very good candidate,
“So, I was thinking maybe we could look at your portfolio really quickly and then hash out the logistics to see if this is something that could work out.”
“Sounds good,” you agree, as you pull up some of your best pictures and share your screen.
The two of you look through your photos, many from the 2019 World Cup, some of the Olympics, and a few from random NWSL games.
“Well, (Y/N), your work is quite impressive. If you’re ready, and you’re seriously interested in this position, we can talk specifics, scheduling, all that good stuff,” Charles offers.
“I’m definitely interested, but can I just preface by saying that my girlfriend is a major part of this decision, so depending on what she wants to do at the end of the season will impact my contract.”
“Oh?” He raises his eyebrows, clearly not expecting your candor. “Your girlfriend plays in the WSL?”
“Yeah, well, technically only for this season. Her contract is up in May,” you explain.
“(Y/N), to be completely frank, we’re looking to hire because a couple of our photographers had some personal issues due to COVID and had to leave mid-season,” Charles reveals. “So if it turns out that your girlfriend wants to go back to the NWSL, then we can work that out. And if she wants to stay, and you end up liking it here and you fit in well, we can also work that out. We’re pretty flexible.”
You sigh in relief, giving him a small smile. “Wow, thank you so much. So what would my contract look like?”
“Well, we can sign you to three month contract with the option for extension,” he offers, as you nod along enthusiastically.
“That sounds great,” you exclaim, beaming. “And just to let you know, I’ve already signed on to work the She Believes tournament from the 18th to the 21st.”
“That actually aligns with the WSL’s international break, and there are a couple Premier League matches that weekend, but I think we can manage, so that shouldn’t be an issue.”
“You guys are too kind and so flexible. I really appreciate it so much,” you say earnestly.
“It’s really just us being desperate for a good photographer,” Charles jokes.
“Either way, I’m grateful for this opportunity.”
“We’re excited for you to join our team,” he reciprocates. “So, in terms of when you’ll begin, I honestly would like you to come over as soon as possible so that you can get settled and get acclimated.”
“I am honestly ready to start whenever you’ll have me.”
“How about next week? The Manchester Derby is on Friday, and honestly, given your portfolio, I’d love you to photograph that match,” the British man admits.
“That’s perfect!” You were in complete awe of how perfectly everything was working out. Photographing a Man United match as your first job meant you could surprise Christen, maybe as an early Valentine’s gift.
“Great,” Charles smiles.
The two of you discuss and finalize your contract and the logistics of you starting the job. Once everything’s settled and you each have the information you need, you wrap up the call.
“Well, thank you so much, Charles, for this offer, and I can’t wait to see you next Tuesday.”
“I can’t wait to work with you and meet you. See you next week. Cheers.”
After ending the Zoom call, you begin to make a COVID test appointment, book your flight, and arrange your hotel room for the few days that Christen doesn’t know you’re there, preparing yourself for moving across the world.
—————
After landing in London, getting settled into your hotel, and meeting with the BBC team and the other photographers, you were now on your way to the Manchester Derby.
In the back of the black cab, you pull out your phone to text a good luck text to Christen.
It was difficult to keep your surprise a secret, especially when you were actually in England, because it was much more difficult to FaceTime without her noticing your change in setting. You had to make up the excuse that you were swarmed with editing and preparing for the upcoming Thorns trainings.
As you pull up to the Academy Stadium, you hear your phone ding.
Chris ❤️
Thanks babe. Miss and love you 😘
You quickly type out a response, before heading into the building.
(Y/N/N) 💗
Love you too. I miss u too but go kick butt.
The match was exhilarating. Not only were you a sports photographer, but you were also a huge fan of the game, enjoying a good game when you see one.
You watched in awe, the level and style of play significantly different from than NWSL. While snapping hundreds of photos of both teams, your camera would always somehow land back on your girlfriend.
Your heart ached for the curly-haired forward, as you missed her dearly. Until you saw her back on the pitch, you hadn’t really realized that you missed watching her play the game that she’d mastered, her movements around the pitch and on the ball effortless and elegant.
As the ref blew the whistle, signaling the end of the half, you scroll through some of the photos you’d taken, deleting some of the blurry and unfocussed ones.
A smile immediately forms on your face when you see a picture of Christen during warmups with a huge grin on her face. You spend all of halftime editing said photo and putting together an Instagram post for your girlfriend.
About fifteen minutes later, the teams take the pitch and you go back to doing your job. Throughout the second half, you could tell that Christen was getting increasingly frustrated, her team getting down 3-0 with only about five minutes left.
You watch as the players high five and hug each other, and you want nothing more than to run onto the field to be with your girlfriend, but you had a plan to stick to.
As the team goes back into the locker room, you pull out your phone to post a photo on Instagram and then you shoot a quick text to Tobin:
(Y/N)🤓:
toby go check out my ig post :))
Back in the Man United locker room, after Casey went through her post match speech, Tobin checks her phone and sees a text from you. The injured forward playfully rolls her eyes at your message but follows your directions.
Upon opening the social media app, Tobin raises her eyebrows, her eyes widening. She glances across the room to see if her best friend had seen your post, but Christen was minding her own business, changing into sweats after her shower.
“Chris!” The older forward calls over to the other woman. “Have you seen your girlfriend’s Instagram post?”
Christen furrows her brows in confusion. “What? No, what is it?”
Tobin waves her friend over and shows her the post:

Christen zooms in on the photo in the center, her eyes widening when she realizes that it is from today’s match.
“How did she get that picture?”
Tobin mentally slaps her forehead at her friend’s denseness. “Knowing (Y/N), she probably took it.”
“But that’s impossible. She’s in the States,” Christen states and shakes her head, dumbfounded.
“Actually,” you speak up, stepping into the locker room, deciding to make your presence known. “I’m right here.”
“(Y/N)?” Your girlfriend looks up at you, her mind in a state of shock.
“Hey, love,” you greet shyly.
Once her mind caught up with reality, Christen runs and jumps into your body, kissing you passionately but briefly and wrapping you into a bone crushing hug.
“I can’t believe your here,” she whispers into your neck. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too, babe, so much.”
Unwrapping herself from the hug, Christen stares at you in awe. “What… how are you here?”
“We can talk about that later,” you give her another quick kiss. “But right now, I just wanna spend time with you. Maybe we can grab some dinner? You can show me around Manchester, considering I’m gonna be spending a lot of time here.”
Your girlfriend looks at you puzzled, but you just give her a wink with a small smirk on your face.
“Well, c’mon lets get out of here.”
—————
Back at Christen’s apartment, the two of you sit down for a nice and casual, but romantic, dinner you’d prepared along with a bottle of red wine.
After catching up, the forward finally decides to address the elephant in the room. “So how are you here? What’s going on, (Y/N/N)? You said earlier that you’d be spending a lot of time in Manchester, what does that mean? I’m so confused. Not that I’m grateful that you’re here right now and that I get to see you, but I thought you were working She Believes, and—“
“Chris,” you cut off your girlfriend’s endearing rambling. “Babe, you’re rambling.”
“Sorry,” she blushes, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
“I got a job with BBC Sport till the end of the season,” you answer her parade of questions.
“Does that mean what I think it does?”
You nod, while taking a sip of your water. “It means I’m yours if you’ll have me.”
Not having the adequate words to express her joy and excitement, Christen gets up from her chair, walks over to sit in your lap, and connects you lips for a searing kiss.
“I can’t believe you,” she breathes, rubbing her nose against yours. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” you quickly peck her lips while rubbing circles on her hip. “But as much as I love you and all this romance, we gotta get going soon.”
Your girlfriend tilts her head in confusion.
“Do the words ‘She Believes’ ring a bell?” You tease. “If I remember correctly, our flight leaves in a couple hours.”
“You’re coming with me?” Christen asks, her brain trying to wrap around the fact that her girlfriend, who she hadn’t seen in almost five months, would now be living with her in England and flying back to the States with her for the next week.
“Of course, Chris,” you give her a cheeky smile, along with a kiss to her nose, as you quote a book Becky had convinced the whole team to read. “You should know by now that I’d follow you anywhere. You’re the only good thing left in this world.”

When Blue Eyes Meet (Good Vlad AU ~ Oneshot)
Summary: I couldn't sleep and got this beautifully heartfelt idea in my head about how my Good Vlad met his cat Madison for the first time and how she helped turn his life around. It's about she adopted him, sensing how bad Vlad needed a friend after Jack and Maddie moved on with their lives until they finally meet again at their college reunion. Warning, this mentions character death.
Vlad's POV
I'll never forget that day, the day I met a very special little lady.
I had only been fully discharged from the hospital for a few weeks but...after I insisted on making sure Jack and Maddie could move on with their own lives without me since I wouldn't drag them down, but once returned home I was suddenly reminded of how alone in the world I really was now. Both my parents had passed away before I started my freshman year of college but they left me with everything I would need to secure a bright future, even the house which gave me a place to return to in the first place since we had no idea the accident would result in me being bedridden for several years.
But as soon as I stepped inside the house, just like my heart it felt so...hollow.
The warmth I used to feel there was long gone, and it had nothing to do with still needing to pay the heating bill. And I suppose it's fortunate that the money I had set aside to pay for my school supplies and my half of the rent was enough to pay for my hospital bills so I had just enough left over to invest in gaining a new lease on life after the accident. It would take time, but I was confident I would be able to go back and continue my studies eventually, but for now I need to focus on figuring out how to cope with the other huge transformation I had undergone.
I almost had to laugh at the irony because perhaps I'm only living a half-life since the accident turned me half-ghost. It was difficult at first, hiding the truth about my condition not only from Jack and Maddie, but the nurses and doctors as well. Thankfully, I inherited my father's sharp wits and managed to conceal my powers fairly well. As for the rest, it was just easier to let people assume they were only seeing things whenever they saw a strange light or my hand seemed to pass through solid objects. After all, who would ever believe that a human with ghost powers could possibly exist...?
Still, I suppose one good thing about returning to that house is that it was nice to finally be able to relax somewhat knowing I wouldn't need to hide my powers from anyone, or at least not nearly as often when I was still a patient. I would still have to be careful if someone came to visit me, but honestly the odds of that happening ere  highly unlikely. I say this because I have no living relatives left. No parents, no cousins or siblings, just me.
Sighing I set down my bags and started unpacking boxes. I needed something else to occupy my thoughts because I still hadn't quite gotten over the fact that I lost my scholarship. Realistically I knew that couldn't be helped given what happened to me so instead I turned my attention to the things I still could control, such as ensuring I still had a place to live since I was no longer a student and Jack wasn't my roommate anymore.
Speaking of which, right from the start I wanted make sure to avoid living somewhere with too many people around so although my original plan was to move back here after graduation I made the decision to return to this town ahead of schedule in light of my extenuating circumstances.
There were still faint traces of my old life here back from when my parents were still alive such as my father's desk and my mother's cooking supplies. And quite honestly, being back here and suddenly feeling their absence all over again...it made me sad. I missed them, just as much I miss Jack and Maddie but I had to start moving on too. So I shook my head, turned our old record player, and kept myself busy by unpacking my belongings.
Luckily I had everything I owned in the dorm moved here after it became painfully clear I wouldn't be able to attend classes anymore due to my critical condition. Jack and Maddie offered to do it for me personally but I declined their kind off because for one thing I didn't want them to find out where I live before I had enough time to gain full control of my powers, and for another I wanted to make a clean break for their sake...
I was dangerous to be around whether I liked it or not so exposing them to danger while my powers were still a bit difficult to control was not a risk I was willing to take. Especially since those two are all I had left and someday...I really hoped I'd be able to meet them again and tell them the truth about my powers. But until then, all I could do was try my best to start over and hope for the best.
~
Once I settled in, I began testing out my powers more, taking notes, pushing my limits, and yet the more I learned about myself the more I wished I had someone to share my discoveries with. Jack could be overzealous at times, but I missed how excited we both felt after making a new discovery about ghosts or ectoplasmic energy. And Maddie, she always knew how to reign us in so we could look at things more objectively even though she was usually just as eager to find out more too.
Having no one left to talk to or come home to had finally started to get to me and sadly as a result that's when the nightmares started up again too. Just like back in the hospital I would wake up in a cold sweat, clutching the sheets in both fists as the ghostly blue glow of my eyes cast flickering shadows on the walls. I had gotten careless because I thought I would be alright as long as I didn't have to worry about a doctor or a nurse walking in at any second and seeing my eyes glowing in the darkness.
That's when I realized I had to do something about this before things escalated even further and my emotions spiraled out of control again without some sort of outlet. I needed to make a connection, a way to overcome this shadow looming over me, so I considered seeing a therapist to prevent these nightmares from overtaking me. But I was afraid that if I did talk to someone...what if I became too emotional and exposed my powers to them? That could be a huge problem. I could always overshadow them, but I'd still be avoiding dealing with this terrible helplessness I felt.
That day, I was wandering around town in a daze, conflicted about how to deal with the problem when I happened to enter a local animal shelter. The people at the front desk were friendly, but I had never considered how my...ghostly attributes might make most animals wary of me since they have a sixth sense for the supernatural which quite honestly made me feel even more detached from the person I once was. As a boy I got along well with most animals but I never felt particularly attached to them. Dogs were a bit too energetic for my tastes and I had to deal with that enough with Jack but cats on the other hand, well I have always appreciated their independent spirit but I never considered them to be very affectionate animals...
That all changed the instant I saw her.
On my way out the door after satisfying my idle curiosity about how animals seem to perceive me now that I'm only half human I noticed this sleek black kitten staring directly at me with the most stunning blue eyes I've ever seen and when our eyes met, what I felt...I can't even describe it. It felt as though she was looking right at me, into my heart, and for the first time since the accident, it was like someone had noticed how lost I was and there was this unmistakable look of gentle sympathy in her eyes.
Mesmerized by her gaze, I turned around and asked the person at the desk more about her and they told me she had been abandoned which I could relate to to some degree. To be fair I hadn't been abandoned necessarily, but I felt that way sometimes since it was gradually becoming harder and harder to wake up alone in that empty house every morning, not sure what I should be doing with the rest of my life now that I'm all alone and don't have friends to confide in anymore I can visit whenever I want.
Impulsively I asked if I could hold her and they agreed, smiling at me secretively as if they already knew I felt an instant attachment to her and as soon as they handed her to me...she clung to me like her life depended on it and then crawled up onto my shoulders, wrapping her tiny body around my neck as much as possible and as soon as she was comfortable she started purring. It was like a hug of sorts and I had no idea how starved for the gentle contact from another living creature of any kind from someone that wasn't just another doctor poking and prodding me that all I remember is falling to my knees soon after, sobbing and resting my cheek against her head as she rubbed against me, licking away my tears.
Finally, I thought, this is what I've been searching for ever since I came home. I've missed having someone there who cares about me, someone to remind me that I'm not alone, someone who can stay by my side so I don't have to suffer in silence anymore without a friend there to comfort me just when I start to think I can't bear it anymore.
I'm sure everyone who saw me that day were just as stunned as I was by my meltdown, but I didn't care. I needed her. And she needed me, no, for reasons I cannot even begin to fathom she WANTED to be with me and no one else. It's like she had been waiting for me to walk in that door from the very start. Waiting for me to give her a home, a family, and most importantly...a name. And that name would become a bond that could never be broken, not even after her tragic death some years later when she returned to my side once more as a ghost because she knew I still desperately needed a friend-
And that's how Madison became my closest and dearest companion.
We’ve been inseparable ever since.

The Adventures of John: Chapter 4, Part 1
Setting off from Piccadilly Circus, Laura walked through Trafalgar Square, then headed down the Strand and Fleet Street. Without looking left nor right, she kept moving eastward across London.
Laura seemed to have been deeply affected by something; as they tailed her from behind, Sherlock let out a small laugh.
“Ha, she is really is a kid after all. Heading straight to her destination like a fool after sensing the slightest bit of danger. And not even considering the risk of being followed like this.”
John, who was walking beside him, spoke up.
“The way you’re talking, it sounds like you know where she’s going.”
“Of course. The address Wiggins said earlier — something’s hidden there. The stray dog sneaking into the building was just an outright lie, yet she turned pale upon hearing it.”
Though John understood what had happened earlier, Sherlock’s words completely eluded his grasp.
“What on earth do you mean, Sherlock?”
At his partner's baffled expression, the detective cracked an exuberant grin. Then, while keeping up the pace, he began to explain in a low voice.
“Well then, let’s start pulling back the curtain. In order to smoke out this shadowy ring of thieves, I used Wiggins and his friends to lay a trap.”
“The Irregulars?”
“Yeah. I asked them to search the slums; but at the same time, I also instructed them to spread a certain piece of information — that the stolen goods from the arrested thieves were being kept at our apartment. As such, there was a chance the other thieves would pay us a visit to retrieve the items.”
John thought back to the jewellery sitting on the sideboard. That had looked pointless at first, but in fact, there’d been a good reason why they were there.
“To be honest, it was a gamble — even I thought there was only a fifty-fifty chance it’d work, but it was a resounding success.”
Sherlock looked at the figure of the girl up ahead, and John was incredulous. At that moment, the pair had just walked past the facade of St Paul’s Cathedral.
“You’re talking about Laura? You mean, that child is one of those thieves from the slums?”
“Don’t underestimate her just because she’s a child. However, judging from how nervous she’s been, I’d say she isn’t one of the thieves exactly; I get the feeling that she’s been forced to follow their orders.”
Hearing that, John thought back to the scene at the cafe.
When he asked Laura if she’d been hiding anything, she had frantically denied it. Placing that reaction in the perspective that she had actually been trying to hide how she was abetting the thieves, it did make sense.
However, John was starting to get confused by all the unexpected revelations, and he fired back doubts of his own.
“Sherlock: to start with, how did you know Laura’s from the underclass? From her appearance, one would think she’s from the middle class.”
“Oi oi, isn’t that obvious? Her fingers were strangely brownish, weren't they? That trait’s often seen in merchants who shell walnuts and sell them on the street.”
“……I see.”
Hearing the detective’s precise analysis, John nodded in admiration. He had first noticed that peculiarity of Laura’s at the cafe, but Sherlock had spotted it right at their first meeting, and seen through her guise straight away.
“Let’s say you’re right. But then, why did Laura disguise herself like that?”
“It’s simple: the thieves knew that I was fairly certain they hailed from the slums, so they wanted her to hide her status just in case. It’s not clear whether she bought those clothes herself, or the thieves stole them — but anyway, that disguise didn’t fool me,” he quipped. “And you should also know that the details — her cuffs, thumbs, nails, and shoelaces — were extremely important and provided a wealth of clues.”
“But even if she is from the underclass, isn’t it at least true that she came by to ask us to search for her dog?”
“That’s a natural question, but I’ll tell you later why that was a lie.”
Putting aside the truth behind her request for the time being, Sherlock continued to explain his reasoning.
“Getting back to the topic: right when I dangled the bait, that kid showed up. But at that point in time, she hadn’t come to take the stolen items by force. Together with Miss Hudson, we were three adults against a child — the difference in physical strength was obvious. As such, our opponents definitely had another plan up their sleeve.”
“A plan…… Do you mean the search for the dog?”
“Precisely. In all likelihood, it carried three meanings.”
Sherlock raised three fingers.
“First: a simple reconnaissance.”
Hearing that, John agreed right away.
“They had to confirm if it was really you looking after the stolen items, rather than the Yard; so Laura visited us on the pretext of making a request.”
“Correct. It looks like you’re starting to get it. Then, reason two: under the guise of having us search for her dog, she wanted to make us both leave the flat.”
“……Ah.”
John finally understood what Sherlock had meant earlier — and he shuddered.
“If we’d left the apartment with her, then only Miss Hudson — a lady — would’ve remained behind……”
“The thieves were probably banking on that opportunity to break into the flat. Although we’d still only be three people even if we stayed behind, it’d be smoother if there were only one woman in the house. Hence, their ruse to have us ‘search for her dog’ was genius. It’s a reasonable request, coming from a child; moreover, it’s not something on a level where you’d go to the police, so it only feels natural for her to approach a detective about it.”
“These thieves sure have a horrible way of thinking, huh……. But as I said before, these are all premised on the assumption that Laura’s request was a lie: they’re still just hypotheses.”
“And as I said, I have definite proof that it’s a lie,” Sherlock replied. “But I’ll tell you about it later……. In the end, the thieves weren’t able to achieve the two goals I mentioned. And that’s because I anticipated their motives, and turned down the request. As insurance in the event of this scenario, Laura’s visit also carried a third meaning…… Sorry to break it off halfway, but we’re almost there.”
Just as Sherlock was about to reveal the final answer, it seemed Laura was nearing her destination.
She had arrived at a set of disused, run-down warehouses along the bank of the Thames, near the Tower of London. [1] The girl looked all around her carefully, then headed deep into the silent industrial district.
Then, she stopped before an abandoned warehouse, and stood there in a daze. Apparently, some kind of excessive shock had made her mind go blank. And upon seeing it, John — who had yet to know the full picture — was also shaken.
Before the girl’s eyes, in the open space before the warehouse—— stood dozens of people, their dirty clothes lending them the appearances of vagrants. Among the group were several hooded figures, whose faces couldn’t be clearly distinguished.
Upon seeing Laura, the vagrants all moved toward her in unison. Sensing the gaze of the crowd on her, she shrank and took a step back.
“……U-Um, why is everyone here? I thought we weren’t supposed to gather here in large numbers, since the bobbies would get suspicious……”
John was presently concealed somewhere behind the girl. From the way she had spoken, it was apparent that the crowd of people was familiar to her. Furthermore, at the very least, she had done something that would draw the attention of the Yard.
At Laura’s question, a middle-aged man stepped forward from the group. And upon seeing his eyes, John felt a glimmer of recognition.
“That’s what I wanted to ask you. What the hell was that?”
The man’s tone was one of formidable menace, and Laura shrank further and further away.
“W-What’re you talking about……?”
At that vague reply, the man tutted in frustration.
“……Then I’ll explain it to you. In the evening, I came all the way here to hide the cash we recovered from that softhearted chap.”
The man stared at the warehouse behind him, as if glaring at it, then returned his gaze to Laura.
“Then when I went into town, I heard some brats saying that there were stray dogs making mischief near these warehouses. I got curious and came back. But for some reason, the others also gathered here one after another. And when I asked them, they all gave me the same story about dogs or burglars or something showing up nearby.”
“Stray dogs……”
With a start, Laura spun around. Then Sherlock stepped out of the shadows with a dignified air, and revealed himself before the crowd. John still didn’t fully understand what was going on; but for now, he placed his belongings on the ground, and went to stand beside Sherlock.
“Dr Watson, and Mr Holmes? ……Did you both follow me here?”
Her own mistake finally dawned upon her, and she paled. But in contrast, Sherlock smiled like a child whose mischief had succeeded.
“It’s about time you realised. It seems your horizons are rather narrow: you should pay more attention to what’s behind you next time.”
At his suggestion, all Laura could do was to groan inaudibly. Then, the man who’d been speaking to her spat out a curse.
“This brat, getting completely tricked like that — what useless scum.”
Sherlock’s tone became derisive.
“Oi oi, a good adult shouldn’t talk like that to a kid, y’know. Still, you got the gist of my trick, right? I got the Irregulars to follow some of the vagrants in the parks, and that’s how I identified this place. As for the remaining people I’d investigated, who seemed to be your accomplices — one by one, I made them overhear rumours that all established the idea that this place was under threat. Then, as planned: everyone got antsy and gathered here in one friendly bunch.”
Trembling, Laura asked him a question.
“That boy Wiggins from earlier: was that your doing, Mr Holmes……?”
“Exactly. But as for the rest of these guys, I didn’t think it’d succeed this brilliantly. You all got way too panicked at the smallest sense of danger. But I’ll give you credit for hiding the loot in such an old warehouse; it’s no wonder we couldn’t find them, even after searching the slums down to its corners.”
Sherlock gazed at the warehouse in admiration. Speechless, Laura just stood there, rooted to the spot, and the man gnashed his teeth in frustration.
Standing beside Sherlock, John listened to their conversation while watching the man with the sharp gaze closely. A doubt arose in his mind, and he observed the rest of the crowd standing petrified before the warehouse — when he gasped in surprise.
Among the group, was the old walnut-seller from Regent’s Park.
The other people he’d bought items from, and given money to in order to obtain more information about Laura’s dog — John also recognised their faces in the crowd.
As he stood dazed, Sherlock patted him on the shoulder and revealed the truth.
“Now you know the third meaning from before. In other words, it was as though they were trying to recover their stolen goods — they used sightings of the dog as bait, and worked together to cheat you of your money. It’s a sly trick; and considering the odds of success, just getting it to work the first two or three times would already be a big achievement. But since you’re more of a softy than they anticipated, it seems you gave them nearly every penny you had.”
“…………”
As he recalled, every time he had decided on their next destination, Laura had confirmed it in an excessively loud voice. He himself hadn’t noticed; but in all likelihood, Laura’s accomplices had been in the vicinity, and that’d been a way of communicating their next location so the group could get there ahead of time. The cash the man mentioned at the start probably referred to the large sum that had disappeared from John’s wallet.
At long last, John understood the whole picture. But more than indignation at having been tricked, to have completely fallen for that: he felt ashamed at his own idiocy.
The man before them was now cornered. Even so, he regained his composure and spoke.
“Hold on, Mr Detective. It seems you think we’ve committed theft, but that’s all a misunderstanding.”
Opposite Laura, who was standing with her head drooped, the man launched into an eloquent speech.
“It’s true that we’re all working together. But as for our relation to this place, it’s just a meeting spot in the event of an emergency. Even if you were to search that warehouse and find stolen goods inside, that would just be a coincidence. It’s all just a series of misfortunes: in the end, you have no proof that we’re the thieves.”
He emphasised that it was all a fluke, though his assertion was a little forced in terms of logic. In itself, there was no issue with the group assembling before this abandoned warehouse. Of course, the amount they’d cheated from John had all been freely given by his own hand — as long as he didn’t ask for his money back, it wasn’t as if a crime had been committed.
However, just as Sherlock had declared right before they’d arrived here, he had the ammunition to shoot down that clumsy argument. Languidly, he approached the girl; and without hesitation, he reached into her pocket.
“——Then, what’s this?”

Part 15: Lost and Found
Walking from a friend’s house to a parking lot, the one next to the 24 hour convenience store he usually parked by during his visits, Iwaizumi’s dark green truck was illuminated by a street light in the darkness of January’s evening.
Reaching his truck, the wing of a familiar black car on the passenger side caught his eye. He walked around the truck and stood between it and the car; staring at the car shortly before looking to the woods then back to the empty car. He checked the time on his phone and went over to rest against the hood. Facing the trees, he wondered if Y/n was out on a run or actually doing something else in the area for once. It was quite late, so he was sure the former was more likely.
He had hardly heard from her over the last week. She normally chatted with him fairly often, daily even. He knew she was busy with work - she had even told him that was so. And though he might not admit it, he was missing her.
Tumblr media
When Y/n arrived at the parking lot she had the habit of leaving her car at while on her forest runs, she saw Iwaizumi’s truck and purposely parked next to it. She figured he was observant enough to notice it was hers and had only planned a short run for the night. While she did have another early day in the morning, she had to come out for some much needed stress relief. A week and a half of mostly only working, no time for friends or outings, her anxiety was gnawing at her. A little time amongst nature, stretching her legs would have to help some.
Approaching the tree line post-run, she spotted Iwaizumi resting on the hood of her Civic. Pawing closer to the edge of the forest, she kept half hidden, eyeing the man ahead. It reminded her of the first time he spotted her out there, except this time when he saw her, he didn't seem caught off guard. Instead, he watched her briefly then stood to walk her way after quickly checking his surroundings for on-lookers. Her ears perked and she stayed put until he got close.
Tumblr media
Iwaizumi scrutinized her with a scowl, but his tone was light and playfully, “Well, isn't this familiar.”
She took a few steps backward and turned away as he entered the woods. Peeking over her shoulder, she silently beckoned him to follow her in hopes to avoid anyone else catching sight of them.
As he followed the wolf, he talked low at her. “Thought you were going to be more careful out here? And here I caught you a third time.”
It was dark out, but the waning moon somewhat lit the forest floor through the dormant trees. He watched her as she walked in front of him; her steps were somehow quieter than his even though she was currently walking on twice as many legs. She stepped around twigs and plants gracefully without even looking while he was sure he had crushed a few tiny plants already. “You know, I think this is the first time I’ve seen you like this.”
“Well, up close.. Other than that time in my apartment..”
The walk was short. Y/n stopped once she was satisfied with their distance from the world outside the woods and sat down, looking up at him as he walked around to face her.
For a moment he just stared at her curiously. And as curiosity does, it got the best of him. It’s not everyday someone sees such a thing.
He kneeled in front of the wolf and slowly reached a hand out, palm up. “Can I-“
She responded by lightly resting her chin in his hand.
This close it was easy to spot the difference between wolves and dogs. One thing that caught his eye was her coat. His hand more or less disappeared as he ran it through the thick fur of her neck. It was unlike petting any dog. He mumbled something inaudible and stood once more, fascination satisfied.
As he stood she stepped back to shapeshift. She held back a giggle while she shoved her hands in the pockets of her coat. “Hey there. Would have greeted you sooner, but,” she shrugged, “ya know.”
“Why didn't you switch back sooner?”
“I thought you might be curious. Figured you wouldn’t ask.” She smiled as she stepped closer to him. “Also. Does it count as getting caught if I intentionally got seen by ya?”
“Did you now?”
“Come on.” They started back from where they came from. “Ya know, I hoped you’d be here when I got back.”
He squinted at that.
“I figured that was your truck. I, uh, missed you.” She stared forward, eyes locked on her destination.
“Yeah?” He side-eyed her. “I've barely heard from you lately.”
She stopped in her tracks. “That doesn’t mean I didn't miss you.”
“I know.” He grinned and nudged her to continue back to the parking lot. “I missed your texts during all odd hours of the day.”
She giggled. “Even my random 2am texts?”
He shook his head. “I never see them ‘til morning.”
“Mm, pretty sure you’ve seen them once or twice,” she bumped her shoulder against his arm, “and scolded me.”
“It was a work night, if I remember right.”
Reaching their vehicles, they stood between them. Y/n leaned back against her driver side door and Iwaizumi faced her a step or two away. “Anyway, ‘Zumi, what are you doing out here anyway?”
He crossed his arms and leaned against his truck, mirroring her. “Visiting some friends.”
She raised an eyebrow. Words dipped in playfulness, she’s asked, “This late on a work night?”
He gave the woods a quick glance. “You’re one to talk.” He eyed her stance trying to determine if she had herself pulled inward because of the cold or something else. “I did stay longer than I should have.”
She casually reached a hand out and he took it without a word, pulling her into a hug. He could feel her inhale deeply.
“So, are you goin’ home now?” With her hands still behind his back, she slipped them into her sleeves for extra warmth.
“Mhmm, unless you don't want me to.”
Y/n did not respond. Only holding him in the hug a moment longer as she nuzzled his collar before letting go and resting against her car again, hands returning to her pockets. Her lips pursed and she looked away with a hum. “Sorry I haven’t talked to you much lately.. Work’s been- It’s had me busy.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it. Finally getting a break or still at it?“
“Mm, yeah, I might have to be at the office at 9am actually,” she trailed off the last few words.
His brows furrowed. “Isn’t it like-“
She was already glancing at her phone. “11:30. Pretty much.”
“Y/n, it will be midnight before you get home!”
She looked down, kicking pebbles around with a boot. “Yeah, probably.. I just-“ She exhaled, breath visible in the cold air, then looked to the trees before looking back to him, “This.. I needed this.”
Eyebrows pulling together, she mumbled into her coat, “It’ll be almost midnight for you too.”
Iwaizumi stared at her, completely disregarding her last comment and focusing on her current state. He had seen her a little anxious here and there, more so a few months ago when they had an odd conversation about what she is, but this time he thought she almost looked sad rather than anxious. He hesitated, “Are you taking care of yourself? You’ve been talking to someone at least, right? Mizuki? Atsumu?”
Tumblr media
She hadn’t. She had been overworking herself and not talking to anyone. Not Iwaizumi or Atsumu or any of her friends or family. Just coworkers and clients she had to talk with, and otherwise she ate and breathed paperwork and meetings while pushing onward to meet a deadline that felt like it was creeping up on her.
Her head ached and heart jumped just thinking about it. With a sigh, she pushed away from the car and wrapped her arms around Iwaizumi’s neck. Cold nose pressed into his collar, she could smell hints of the forest mixed with orange and sage. Her lips ghosted his neck as she spoke quietly, “I’m okay.”
Arms around her waist pulled her in close and he pressed his nose into her hair. “Alright..”
“What if ya come over tomorrow night? I hope to have enough work done by then that I can take some time to myself.”
“Wouldn’t time to yourself be by yourself?”
“Mm, I think I'd rather have company after, y’know, kinda avoidin’ everyone.” She grimaced.
“Okay.. Just let me know when. Okay?” He pulled away from her. “And let me know when you get home.”
She gave him a soft smile. “M’kay.”
Tumblr media
Pulling into her complex’s parking garage, she sighed heavily. She tapped on the screen left of the steering wheel to give Iwaizumi a call while she searched for a parking spot. She could have just sent a text, but she really did miss him and seeing him just a bit ago was all it took to amplify the feeling.
After a few short rings he answered her call, his voice a little distorted through the speakers, “Hey, you home already?”
But she perked a little at the sound anyway. “Yeah, jus’ pulled in. Home safe,” she said just before finding a spot to park. “Mm.. Yer a bit closer to there than me, you home too?”
“Yeah, I-“ An exasperated sigh echoed through the car. “I want to ask how we got home at the same time, but I think I know the answer,” he grumbled.
Sure, it should have taken her about 10 minutes longer. She may have driven a little faster than she should have and left the parking lot before Iwa with the intention of not speeding past him on the highway.
“Hey now. Our drives are almost the same distance. Kinda.” She relaxed in her seat. She could hear a door close loudly on the other end of the call. “Uhm, I’ll probably be working fairly late.. Wanna maybe come over around 7 or so? I should be good by then.”
“Yeah, that’ll be fine. Are you going to stay in your car until I hang up?”
She stiffened, eyes going wide. “I- What? How-“
“You do realize I can tell that you’re talking through the car, right? It has that sound to it.” More sounds traveled through the speakers from his end.
She drummed her fingers on her leg. “Yeah, okay,” her voice came out soft. She gathered her things to leave the car and hovered a hand over the dash buttons. “Goodnight. I- I'll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.”
[Call Ended], displayed on the screen.

HOI. um anon that moved here! the way i smiled when i saw that you wanted me to check in :-) ill try to keep this short so i don’t talk your ear off but helloooo! I’m doing alright! Ill be going to the dmv so hopefully i’ll be able to get my license soon (for the record i moved from nyc so i was very use to public transportation, i miss my trains and metrocard & the mta!💔) fingers crossed for me!
And not to be nosey but did your brother come visit you yet? I have a friend that’s actually visiting her brother atm, it’s been a long time since they’ve seen each other and i love how happy she is to see him again :) i hope you guys have (or are having) a great time!!!
Also. Um. Take a shot everytime billy says the word love! Haha i’m not sure if anybody brought up how he use to think love was a stupid word/concept and now he’s using it fairly often towards reader. It really breaks my heart cus we see that he’s really trying, but what he did to her was terrible and shes sooo protective of herself. My chest was getting so warm reading his pov like aching for them!!
Btw how are you liking california! I’m not sure how long ago you moved, but when did it start feeling like home for you? And do you get homesick? Cus i really miss new york sometimes 😅 not to get too personal but i feel like i left a lot back home and sometimes get a pang of guilt about leaving, even though it was for the best and sometimes you just have to move on. Anyways i hope you have a great week my darling!!! 💖
I'm glad you're doing well, dear anon. And I totally get what you're saying about your license. I actually don't drive myself because i have a tendency to panic behind the wheels so I've always been a public transportation woman myself. It's not ideal in California but it works for me. Sometimes I think about getting my license but then I freak out about driving and I have enough stressful things to worry about without adding to the list.
The first couple of months was really difficult. When I moved here, I didn't have any friends or family. It was the biggest risk I took both in my life and my career. And it's honestly the best thing I've ever done for myself. My mental health improved tremendously because it gave me the distance I needed from my parents, and it gave me a chance to go out there and discover myself. I've made great friends here now, built a life here, and my career trajectory shot upward exponentially. But the first few months - oof, that was hard. I do miss my brother a lot and my friends but when we see each other now our time together feels so much more meaningful. The distance made me realize how much they mean to me.
I hope good things are in store for you, dear anon :)
My brother was supposed to be here in May but our plans may now change. We may have to travel to Bangladesh to help bring our dad back to Canada but that's still up in the air. It all depends on how long it takes him to recover.
And I'm glad you were able to empathize with Billy's POV. He messed up so badly, and all he wants is the Reader back in his life, to get back what they had - but that dream is impossible now.
Anyway, thank you again. Good luck!

“Master Lloyd, maybe you should go get that checked at the hospital.”
“Pix, I’m fine, it’s just a scratch,” Lloyd mumbled through the gauze as he snapped it with his teeth, winding the last several inches around his forearm. “And I thought I told you to stop calling me that.”
“Why? You are our master now, aren’t you?”
Lloyd snorted, tentatively testing his arm as he moved it back and forth. “I’m no master. I can’t even keep our team together.”
Pixal stared at him, shocked. “We all agreed on this, Lloyd. It is the most efficient plan to find Master Wu.”
“Yeah, and whose plan was that?” Lloyd’s voice was suddenly sharp.
“I believe it was Zane’s, but-”
“Exactly! It was Zane’s plan, not mine. I did nothing. And now, they’re off searching for Master Wu, and I’m sitting here, doing nothing.”
An unfamiliar sensation squeezed at Pixal’s chest, one that felt hot and fierce and miserable all at the same time, before she had to remind herself that no, she didn’t have a body, didn’t have a chest to feel pain in, and that she was just speaking to Lloyd over the monitors.
At least, in the moment, she was.
“Zane trusted me to watch over this city,” she insisted, her voice unstable- which it shouldn’t be, she was a nindroid, not affected by such things- “He trusted us.”
Lloyd flinched visibly, looking away from the computer they were using to talk. “Pix, I didn’t mean- look, I’m sure Zane much would’ve rather had you come along with him, but instead you got stuck babysitting me.”
“Normally, I would object, but I think you’ve already proven your own point,” she commented, shooting a pointed glare at his bandaged arm.
Lloyd gritted his teeth, letting out a slow breath. “I get it, Pixal, I’ll be more careful next time.”
“A doctor’s visit couldn’t hurt, Lloyd.”
“Will you drop it already?”
She frowned. “I wish you wouldn’t grow cross with me, Master Lloyd. I am only trying to look out for you-”
Lloyd stood up sharply. “I get it, okay? I’m incompetant. You don’t need to keep calling me ‘master’ out of pity, I know I’ll never be able to live up to my unc- Master Wu.”
Pixal blinked at him, stunned. “Lloyd, I never-”
“Shut up! I don’t want to hear it!” And then he was reaching forward, slamming down the laptop’s lid, and Pixal’s world went dark.
He knew how much she hated that, when he turned her off or walked away without her consent, like she was some sort of object.
He hadn’t meant it- she had learned a lot about Lloyd in their past year alone together, and he often became impulsive when he was angry in order to cover up his sensitive, insecure side. It would probably only be a matter of hours before he came running back, apologizing repeatedly, and sobbing over what a horrible friend he was as Pixal patiently waited for him to calm down. But she had grown to like and respect Lloyd, and it still stung when he snapped at her, even though the logical part of her mind knew that it wasn’t really her that was the problem.
What bothered her even more so, though, was the things he said about himself. It had been abrupt, this time, but she hadn’t missed the times he had slipped it in more subtly into conversation. It made her angry, how he refused to appreciate himself.
And now, stuck in this stupid form, she couldn’t go after him.
Well. Technically, she could.
The Samurai X suit had been up and operational for a few months since her last major upgrade- the one that had finally given her her own, independent body, separate from just the mech itself.
But she was nervous to remove herself from the computer entirely. She was aware that she was so incredibly useful as a program, with instant access to all sorts of technology and data. She had become an asset to her team.
She liked feeling important, feeling like she was part of the group.
But being the samurai allowed her to physically be there. In these last few months, she felt like she had really grown to know and trust Lloyd- even if he didn’t know it was her beneath the samurai mask. She wanted to get to know the others fully, too- she was already fairly close to Zane, but she liked the rest of the team, too- Cole, Jay, Kai, and especially Nya, Pixal felt intrigued by. She had spent some time connecting similarities between them- there were a lot of differences, too, but she felt like they could be friends. A physical form would allow her to bond with them, like a human. She was well aware she wasn’t one, but she wanted to understand.
But she was afraid, too. Except for Zane, and maybe Lloyd, now, seeing the others again felt daunting. They had never been particularly close before she had been scrapped. What if they thought she was infringing on their team? The six of them had been close for so long. It would make sense if she wasn’t wanted there.
She just wasn’t ready, not yet. Communicating with Lloyd through the monitors would just have to do for now. It was difficult, though- it didn’t seem like he took her as seriously this way.
For now, though, they had bigger problems. Lloyd’s injury hadn’t been too severe, from what she could tell, and would heal quickly. But it had been a sizable wound, and could leave some pretty severe scarring, if he wasn’t careful with it- she knew he wouldn’t be, which was why she had to keep him in line- but the point was, these were no common thieves going around, dealing this kind of damage. This gang- whoever they were- were something bigger, more dangerous than their day-to-day threats. Pixal wasn’t sure if it was severe enough to start calling the others back- she didn’t want to interrupt their search for Master Wu. But she would certainly have to keep a closer eye on Lloyd from now on, to make sure he didn’t get in over his head.
She should probably start playing a more active role as Samurai X. Although the ninja had a tentative relationship with her mysterious persona, she wasn’t about to send Lloyd against this gang alone again.
She just hoped he would have her.
---
The next call came in much sooner than Pixal had anticipated. At the unappealing hour of four in the morning, Lloyd hauled himself out of bed and stumbled drearily out the door at Pixal’s report of a prison breach alarm coming from Kryptarium. With the rush, there was no time to talk to him, and the drive to the prison was awkward and silent.
When they arrived, it turned out the alarm had been triggered by accident. The good news was there were no criminals to stop, the bad news was that they had woken up at four am for no reason.
Not that Pixal particularly minded- sleep was inconsequential to a nindroid, but Lloyd was less than pleased.
“I mean, if you’re going to have an alarm system that immediately pages the city’s ninja team and makes them stop everything they’re doing to rush over there, it should at least be heavily guarded. How do you even accidentally set off an emergency alarm? I thought these guys were supposed to be professionals!”
Pixal stifled a laugh as he paused, taking a sip of the iced coffee he had picked up as they had headed back. He had told her, “If I’m already up and ready, I might as well spend some time in the city for a little while. Y’know, in case they trigger any other ‘alarms’ that I need to go rushing off to.”
“Perhaps they need a lesson from the ninja,” Pixal suggested.
“I’ll say,” he grumbled. “I don’t know how this city ever survived before we showed up.”
“Well, experience is the best teacher, and you guys have triggered enough traps and alarms to last a lifetime.”
“Wait, what?” Lloyd spluttered. “No, we haven’t! We’re highly trained ninja, we’re better than that.”
“Oh, really? I seem to remember quite a few in the Tournament of Elements, or the time with the technoblades, or when General Cryptor tracked you- shall I go on?”
“Shut up,” Lloyd snorted, trying to hide his grin. “You don’t know nothin’.”
“You’re right, I don’t. I was only with you for a short time before I was uploaded into Zane’s head, and after that, my view of your adventures was extremely limited. I can’t imagine how much more trouble you got into when I wasn’t there.”
“I hate you,” he said, attempting to scowl and failing miserably, the look on his face was too comedic for Pixal to bite back her laugh this time. It wasn’t long before Lloyd joined her, and soon, he was bent over, clutching his stomach, and he had to sit down for a moment to catch his breath. Pixal felt warm inside as she watched him take a long sip from his coffee. She enjoyed seeing him like this. He had been far too tense over the last few weeks, and she missed the more childlike, carefree side of him.
After a moment, though, the expression on his face fell solemn, and he turned to the tablet they were using to communicate to look her directly in the eyes. “Pix, I’m really sorry for yelling at you last night. I was being a brat.”
She paused carefully, both relieved and nervous that they were finally addressing this. “Lloyd, I know you were hurting. I am only trying to look out for you.”
He put his hands behind his head. “Yeah, I know, I need to work harder-”
“Lloyd,” she interrupted firmly. “That’s the other thing. I need you to stop saying things like that about yourself.”
He cocked his head at her. “Like what?”
Good grief, he doesn’t even know he’s doing it. “Talking down on yourself. I called you ‘master’ because that’s what you are now. You’ve earned this title, Lloyd. Just like you’ve earned everything else in your life, and more. It was not my intention to say you would take your uncle’s place, but say that you can be just as great of a leader as he was.”
Lloyd suddenly found the cracks in the concrete to be very interesting. “See, people keep saying that, but- it’s just so hard. I feel like I always mess everything up. Something always goes wrong, or worse, someone gets hurt-”
“Lloyd, you’re one person. You can’t expect to be successful all the time. You may be a ninja, yes, but your job is very difficult and dangerous, something most people wouldn’t even dream of tackling. You’re part of a team for a reason, and I’m sorry they’re not here right now, but until they return, you’re going to have to give yourself a little credit.”
Lloyd’s breathing hitched, and he scrubbed at his suspiciously wet eyes. His next words were so quiet, Pixal could barely hear them. “I just miss them. Everyone… everyone always leaves, and I’m tired of being alone all the time.”
Pixal was struggling to breathe herself- even though she was a nindroid, didn’t need to breathe- the sensation was still there.
She could remember when she had been alone too. Those nights after Zane had… had died, had been some of the worst times of her life. The emptiness had only made it sting worse, but when Lloyd had reached out to her, she had refused him.
She had been scared, scared to let anyone else into her life in case she lost them too, but now she realized that he had been hurting just as much as she had. She knew his friends had gone off on their own like she had, leaving him just as alone as the rest of them. She had been the cause of that, she had only hurt him more when he was already going through so much.
When she spoke again, it wasn’t just for the situation at present.
“I’m sorry, Lloyd. I’m so sorry.”
He looked up at the screen, his watery green eyes staring into hers, then raised an arm, his fingers ghosting the screen, before falling back to his side. He looked away, swallowing.
“What is it?”
“I just… I wish I could hug you. I wish you were here. Like, actually.”
“I am much more useful in the computer, Lloyd.”
“Yeah, but you’re not… you’re not here. I don’t care about how useful you are.”
Pixal let out a trembling breath, but Lloyd hardly seemed to notice, already beginning to stand up. “Sorry about being such a downer. I better get back to the Bounty, I’m sure the police have something for me to do.”
“Lloyd?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’ll be fine. I just… they’ll be back soon. I know they aren’t like… other people. They’re going to come back. And besides, until then, I’ve got you, right?” He gave her a shy smile.
Pixal froze. This was it. He was extending- a metaphorical- hand to her. Offering her to be part of something that she had been wanting for a long time.
But it felt wrong. She wasn’t a ninja. She wasn’t one of his teammates. What if she was assuming wrong? What if he wasn’t really asking that?
“I’m not one of the ninja, Lloyd. I can’t help you the way they can.”
“No, you’re whoever you want to be, Pix. But you’re still my friend.”
Friend. Pixal felt a sudden urge to correct him, to tell him he was mistaken. “I’m not part of your team. I… I can’t be.”
“Trust me, Pix- in every sense that matters- you are one of us.”
---
“Pixal, I need my car! Now!”
The nindroid’s voice came out slightly crackly from the radio. “Your coordinates, Master Lloyd?”
“I’m somewhere around… well, you know how to find me.”
The cable he was gripping onto slowed to a stop, then quickly began to swing back down. Squeezing his eyes shut, Lloyd prayed that Pixal knew what she was doing, and let go.
Air whipped past him as he fell freely, the fall feeling both agonizingly slow and alarmingly quick at the same time, but before he had time to question what the hell he was doing, a blur of green darted out from a nearby alleyway, and Lloyd fell into his car.
He quickly pulled himself up and took over the controls. “Impeccable timing, Pix! You’re getting good at that.”
“I have to do something while you’re busy fighting crime, don’t I?”
“Speaking of which…” Lloyd cut off, gritting his teeth as he wove in between cars on the busy street, chasing after the biker. “Who is this person? Anything you can tell me about them?”
“They appear to be affiliated with the same criminal biker gang we have been having trouble with over the last few weeks. I am afraid I cannot tell you anything other than that. They have been keeping a very low profile.”
“Well, whoever they are, they’re good. I’ll keep you posted.” Gritting his teeth, he pushed on the gas and shot through the streets after the mysterious biker. They were a skilled driver, but Lloyd wasn’t lacking in that department either, and soon, he had caught up to the biker. The person’s eyes glowed an eerie red through their mask, their expression emotionless, and Lloyd forced his gaze away for a moment to examine the object in the back of his bike- presumably the stolen item. It was a red mask, with an ugly, beast-like face patterned over the top, complete with a mouth of crooked, yellowing teeth, and deep, glowering eyes. It looked like nothing more than a costume. Lloyd wondered what they could possibly want with it.
Putting on another burst of speed, he pulled in front of the biker, making them screech to a halt to avoid a collision. The two of them stared each other down, only a short stretch of road between them.
The criminal revved his engine, and suddenly, was racing towards Lloyd. Lloyd began to do the same, and just when he thought the biker was about to hit him head-on, mechanical arms extended from the bike, driving into the road, and sending the biker flying over his head. Lloyd slammed to a halt and jumped out of the car, running over to the bridge as the biker went over the edge. He yanked something near his chest, and all of a sudden, a big sheet was billowing out from his back, gray and black and red-
Lloyd’s breath caught in his throat as the parachute unfolded fully, revealing the emblem of a face that Lloyd had never thought he would see again.
No, no, no. Lloyd stumbled back from the railing, his breath hitching in his chest as he tried desperately to draw it in. This doesn’t mean anything. Perhaps they just are a fan of Garmadon, it doesn’t mean he’s here-
But it wasn’t working. His body just wasn’t listening to him, his heart beating too fast, his breath trembling and shallow, and his head-
“Lloyd!” A voice came from seemingly out of nowhere, and in his panicked state, he couldn’t, he couldn’t-
“Lloyd, it’s Pixal. What’s happened, why aren’t you responding?”
Oh. It was Pixal, on… on the radio. With trembling fingers, he reached down and switched on his mic. “...Pix?”
“Lloyd, don’t scare me like that, what’s wrong?”
“Pixal… Pixal, I don’t know…” Oh gosh, he was spiraling, spiraling hard, panic swamped his brain as images of his father flashed before his eyes, first running off with the golden weapons, then trying to kill him when the Overlord had taken over, then when he had submerged under the ocean, down, down, down with the Preeminent-
No! Lloyd’s eyes snapped open, scattering the images. He couldn’t be thinking about this now, not- not when-
Oh gosh. His father couldn’t be involved with this gang, he couldn’t. He was gone, gone for good. He missed him, so, so much, but nothing with his father was ever that simple. Something always went wrong, and Lloyd was just beginning to get over his last death, he couldn’t- couldn’t live through the pain again-
“Lloyd, Lloyd listen to me, just try to breathe-”
He could barely hear her. His legs had stopped working, and he sunk to the ground, hugging his knees to his chest, trying to remember to breathe. The last thing he needed was to pass out from lack of oxygen.
He buried his face between his knees, gulping through the sobs. Dammit, why was he like this, he hadn’t had an episode this bad since Morro-
And now he was thinking about that part of his life, one he had so desperately hoped to forget- it had been years, why was still not over that, he had gotten good at suppressing those feelings long ago, but when he got like this, he couldn’t control anything-
He hated when he got like this, it was so terrifying, he just wanted to go home, he just wanted Kai to be here, why was he always all alone-
Suddenly, firm, cool arms were wrapping around him, pulling him close. Lloyd gasped, his eyes flying open sharply.
A pair of glowing green eyes stared back at him, shadowed with fear. “Hey,” she whispered, her metallic jaw moving with the words, “I’m here now. You’re going to be okay.”
He had lost it, he was hallucinating, how was- how was she here-
“Pixal?!”
“Yeah,” her voice was quiet, rubbing her fingers across his palm. “It’s me. I’m here.”
“How?”
“I’m Samurai X, Lloyd.”
“Oh.” Vaguely, a part of his mind told him he should be more surprised by that piece of information, but he was just tired. His mind was already on overdrive, he couldn’t afford to take in anything else.
“Lloyd.” Pixal’s voice was scared, and he realized he was trembling in her grip. “Please, what has happened to you?”
“It’s- it’s…” Lloyd gasped for breath. “My dad, he- the biker, he was- he had-” and those words alone were too much. Everything was breaking, splintering apart right in front of his eyes, and he clutched onto Pixal like she was his lifeline- in a way, she was. She felt different from Kai’s warm, soft touch- harder and cooler- but sturdier and stronger, too. And right now, Lloyd could use a bit of strength.
But most of all, she was here.
“Why did you tell me?” He managed to get out. “Out of everyone, you told me first? Not Zane?”
Pixal was silent for a moment. “I know what it’s like. I mean, not exactly- I can’t feel what you are feeling right now. But… feeling emotions has been hard. Draining. You, out of all people, seem to know that. But you’re still so strong through everything. I just… you helped me to see how to heal. How to get better.” She paused, looking down at her hands. “But I guess it doesn’t always work out that way. I figured it was about time I helped you back.”
He leaned his head into her lap, examining her long, silver fingers, brushing them gently. “I like you like this. You’re pretty.”
He wasn’t looking at her face, but he could almost feel her smile. “Thank you. I worked hard to make this. I wanted to make sure… that I was better, this time. I still have some modifications to make, but…”
Lloyd winced, feeling a pang of guilt. “I’m sorry I made you show me before you were ready.”
“Lloyd,” she said firmly. “This was my choice. Not yours.” She took one hand and turned his chin so their gazes met, green on green. “I trust you. I always have.”
Lloyd felt his lip tremble. “I-”
Pixal stopped him. “It’s okay, Lloyd. You don’t have to say it. I know.”
Lloyd curled into her side and wept.
