How do you think Five would feel about Andy Weir’s The Martian? I can’t decide if it would be triggering or if he’d get a kick out of it
I have to admit I have never read The Martian, so I can't speak much to how I think Five would react to it. From the little I know about it, the main guy has a rather upbeat attitude around his solitude and having to figure out survival on Mars, right? The snippets I've read have had great humor to them, at least. Based solely on that (and that I saw the movie once), I think it's a book Five would overall enjoy and find parts about figuring out survival relatable, and be able to read Exactly Once. Just a little too close to home for any repeat visits to that one.
Anyone who has actually read The Martian and has much more informed opinions on this feel free to chime on in.

Danny sat on a rooftop feeling confused. It was currently 3 days later than he last remembered. That was 3 DAYS with no memory of anything. He didn’t even know what city he was in. The only thing he is sure of is that it wasn’t mind control. His experience with Freakshow let him know that.
Along with this feeling more similar to the time his mom shoved high proof cleaning alcohol that was ectofied in his face during an excited rant. The fumes alone had him missing a few hours. Luckily Jazz was there and kept his blackout drunk self entertained.
So the question was, where the hell was he and what did he do?! Also, what caused him to blackout? Last he remembered he was in Metropolis and he got nearly hit in the head with a green glowing stone that he only vaguely could tell was somehow not ectoradium. After that? Nothing.
Aka: Kryptonite is highly compressed ectoplasm and causes Danny to get black out drunk just by being in its vicinity.
P.S. I also would love to see what chaos you think Danny would get up to lol

I personally like to headcanon the Kents as Jewish!
Because his creators are Jewish
Also kal el is Hebrew
So i just think it would make lots of sense!
What about you guys?
This is a pretty common fanon headcanon for those reasons! And I've actually applied it to my version of Clark too! (He's sharing hamantashen and rugelach with Lois here)
I think it's a fun way to honor his og creators' heritage. Whenever I talk about the historical and allegorical context of Superman's sons-of-immigrants creators, people tend to misread that I believe Clark is canonically Jewish in text. And to that,,,I say people need to learn what an allegory is, haha.

How Does it Feel to Read Classic Sci-Fi?
Orson Scott Card: Two of the most interesting books you’ll ever read if you’re willing to look past a handful of things. And then you find the planet of Chinese people who worship having debilitating OCD. And the Mormonism. And the fact that the author is wildly homophobic and ought to read his own books.
Robert Heinlein (or at least the Wikipedia Summaries): I guess that’s a neat concept—oh, it’s a sex thing. Um. Gotcha.
Ray Bradbury: Man, I gotta read this thing for class huh. Well here’s hoping it’s good! *three hours later* oh. that’s why he’s famous. this will stick with me forever and I will never look at the phrase ‘soft rain’ the same again. christ. And then repeat 3x.
Isaac Asimov: Wow, this is such an interesting concept! I wonder how the exploration of it will influence the plot! Wait, hey, are you going to add any characters? Any of em? No like, with character traits other than ‘robot psychologist’ and ‘autistic’ and ‘woman’? None of em? No, ‘detective’ isn’t a character trait. Those are all just facts. Aaaand now I’m bored.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Hah, get a load of this guy! He’s never heard of nonbinary people before. Lol, what a riot; how dumb do you have to be to comprehend that these people aren’t men *or* women actually? Oh, wait, what’s happening. Oh shit, it was about society and love and learning to understand each other? And now I’m crying? And perhaps a better human being for it??
Andy Weir: Alright, this guy’s a really good writer. Funny, creative, knows so much engineering stuff…ooh, a new book! …I guess he can’t write women. Well, he wouldn’t be the first sci-fi writer…ooh another new book! And it’s more engineering problem solving and—wow. It’s not just women he can’t write. Please stop letting your characters talk to each other.
Lois Lowry: Oh, I remember this being fun when I was a kid! Wouldn’t it be fucked up to not see color? …upon reread, it would be fucked up to have your humanity stripped away, replaced with a tepid, beige ‘happiness’ for all time. Yeah.
Tamsyn Muir (let me have this ok): Haha, “lesbian necromancers in space” sounds fun. Lemme read this. Oh wow, yeah, this is right up my alley. OH GOD WHAT. NO. FUCK. OH SHIT WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING AND WHY IS IT REFERENCING THE BOOK OF RUTH AND HOMESTUCK BACK TO BACK!!! AHHHHHHHHH!! Now give me more please.

Reverse Portal AU but it's like The Martian and Ford is desperately trying to get Stanley home while Stan is trying to survive in the Nightmare Realm by growing potatoes and is also somehow recording audio logs.
(both of them are having mental breakdowns daily)

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?

History book club is a lot of fun because sometimes you walk into the room and someone is talking about how they were part of the crew that picked up Apollo 8 after they landed in the Pacific

ADHD Mood
I couldn't sleep, so I decided to do some reading, and the book I was reading references the characters eating tomatoes, despite being in medieval Europe, which broke my suspension of disbelief so bad that I closed the book to just kinda marvel at how much the culinary identities of various cultures have changed post columbian-exchange. Like how many Afeurasian countries have prominent potatoes in their dishes? Or tomatoes? Or so many other things
But then I was thinking about how the world was clustered before the "Age of Exploration" and I remembered how Oceania is so separated from the rest of the world that the plants and animals there are so distinct from pretty much any other part of the world. And I realized I have no idea what Aboriginal or Maori food is even like, and less of an idea of if/how the introduction of outside food might have effected that
So now I'm on a website dedicated to Maori food history. Did you know that they didn't make pottery, so to boil things they would put a red hot stone into a wooden bowl of liquid? Also it seems the introduction of pork and potatoes was very popular.
I should be asleep

i'm only 90 pages into my project hail mary reread and already its status as my all time favorite book has been confirmed like thrice over. the writing. how the first four chapter end really abruptly with a single realisation ryland has about his situation. specific scenes, like explaining the consequences of the astrophage to his kids and the send off he graced (hah) his crew with.
and we haven't even met rocky yet! truly A Book™
