I have a question and you might’ve been asked before, but animation, do you have any tips for beginners? Love your content btw 🥰

Even tho my degree is in animation I must be honest…😬 nowadays I very often don’t have the patience for anything more complicated than animatics. So I’m trying to stick to tried and true advice lol…

Probably the biggest tip would be that, yes the beginner exercises may be boring, and not look very cool, but they are essential to getting those skills you need down. The flour sack exercise, the wave principle—doing squash and stretch, and timing studies to really nail the way that movements should “flow” properly. These are absolutely necessary skills to master if you want to make fluid animations.

Planning is also another important, but sometimes overlooked aspect of animation. Some ppl (read:me) wanna just jump straight to animating. But planning in those first simplest stages really helps save you headaches in the later stages, when things are getting more complicated and all over the place. Storyboarding helps you plot your timing, choosing where key shots will go, camera angles, pacing ect.

And speaking of camera angles. STUDY STUDY STUDY cinematography! Something doesn’t have to be animated for it to be applied to animation. Perspective is a massive beast to tackle once you start storyboarding and unless you want boring shots and stagnant compositional framing, you need to learn all the ways you can frame a scene and your characters! Idk if you’re up for watching some horror movies, but those are a great source to pull from, as they tend to always frame, pace and even light their shots in really interesting and dynamic ways!

It’s also great to practice with free programs before you spend money on things like a subscription for photoshop or any other fancy software. Most interfaces are similar enough, that beginning with something free like Rough Animator or Blender can give you some good practice before you commit!

That’s all I can think of right now! And sorry if that wasn’t exactly what you were looking for…if you want me to try to give more specific advice on something just drop me another ask—I’m willing to keep rambling on!

Hello!!! I watch your videos all the time and my favorite quote of yours is from the Martin's Story video, "Adventure Time is amazing at retconning small minor details and making them retroactively more important." I'm a writer, so I think about this A LOT. i just wanted to ask HOW do you think they do it so well/ WHY do you think it works so well. Thanks so much :)

I'm tired and not gonna revise whatever I manage to write, so I hope my answer makes sense. 😅 I wanna quickly remind folks that retcons do not have to be contradictory in nature - that's not part of the definition. Retcons that are contradictory are pretty universally agreed to be bad retcons by default. So anyway, how I see it is... The Adventure Time world is really open and free, in the sense that its fantasy magic allows for pretty much whatever you want to happen in it. That aspect makes retconning a lot easier and reduces base-level inconsistencies in some cases.

The next one is purely my gut feeling. AT had new writers/storyboarders/etc. join over time while others left (like Penn himself), but it seems like everyone working on the show really loved it, so they put in a lot of extra effort and love when continuing its legacy.

AT has a whole lot of foreshadowing! Having occasional retcons (that aren't contradictory) feels like a non-issue when so many other events have plenty leading up to them.

AT retcons are often used as a means toward following up on established events or characters arcs (for example, Manfried & Crunchy & 'Punchbowl' were retconned as part of a new arc for Princess Bubblegum and to continue the Finn-Fern fiasco). So I guess I'm saying retcons that serve purposes beyond just the retcon itself are more likely to fit well.

Its here! This is my first time doing an animatic / music video / using really any video editing software so it looks scuffed but I like how it ended up for a first time!

This one features technobald because his hair was getting in the way of the lyrics so I snatched that shit away. I think you can kinda see the point where I worked out what I wanted to do.

I'll be real I just went into this one with a 'I wanna make anything' mindset so its not the best but I still like how it turned out

Hopefully you can kinda see the colour language I wanted to use? Starting dark and then brightening up around the middle before going back dark again.

Did the same thing with the lyrics, they start changing along with certain hallmarks that happen in the story like Technos nosebleed, the Mystery Meat etc.

Also spot Phils evil little hands popping in during still like "what do I need" and "I was born something" before going into "what could I be" where you can see his fangs next to his tusks :)

Anyway I gotta post this and close tumblr before I decide I hate this and that it should never see the light of day again. I spent like barely 4 hours on this ofc its not gonna look amazing silly brain.

A while ago I found your Shadow Chase art, I loved it and became a fan, you create very funny stories and your art is beautiful, but that's not the point, I started following you because of that, but then I realized that you have many others projects and You are also very busy with your personal life. My question is how is everything organized and planned to advance a project despite academic/work responsibilities? I've seen that you even have collaborations with others and I keep thinking "this person is great." As a final note, I just want to leave my good wishes and hope you have a nice week. <3

I think there is no denying that I need to organize myself a little bit to make everything work. I think I‘ve always used drawing, especially drawing comics, as a way to breathe and when I started uni I promised myself I would continue drawing somehow. The first semester was hell, but I finished all the way. 💪 And I had the same mindset for working, so when I started this year I was very motivated to draw. Lol I think it also helped that I had several different projects to work on so when I wasn’t in the mood for black and white I would move to something colorful. Comics also offer the possibility to work on different parts. Do I want to work on the story, on the storyboards, on the actual drawings or just editing…? A lot of options. And this is something which I heard on a video on AI but artist and creative people in general don‘t create in other to have more content but to get something out of their head and feel the satisfaction of creating a certain idea and I felt that very much. And then there is the joy of collabs and while there were unfortunately more failed attempts at collabs I’m very glad for those which eventually resulted in great projects. ❤️ I might have to take actual breaks from drawing when I get back to my thesis. I finished all the work but need to write the discussion part and wow, how much I don‘t wanna work on that. 

Currently I use my time on commutes for drawings digitally or making storyboards. In the evening I finish private stuff and when time is left I work on traditional art. Shadow Chase is the only project where I try to have an overview on how many pages I have done and want to finish before the next upload. Other works can usually go up once finished. When I create something for fan projects like zines, bigbangs, etc. I usually just try to finish said project right away. I don‘t like procrastinating (except my thesis I guess) and rather have stuff than can be finished done right away and focus on my other projects again.  Shades of Tourmaline was definitely my biggest collab project yet and with the amount of art planned it took like 3 years to finish because that was something I couldn‘t get done right away. 😂 fortunately clef was very patient with me (and kept me distracted with new collabs, oops). 

The short answer would be I try to draw as much as possible because it is just a lot of fun with the additional bonus of entertaining a few people. ❤️

I think I should put in my two cents considering the Hazbin hotel leaked Angel Dust clip. I’ll say that this post should be one absolutely massive trigger warning. If you’re sensitive please don’t read this, I’m pretty blunt. Also I’m only talking about a small leak but SPOILERS!!!

So before I make any points I’ll start by saying that I’m not an inherent fan of vivziepop, this isn’t meat riding, it’s a genuine attempt at open conversation and discussion. I’ll also say I’m a survivor myself and while I don’t claim to speak for anyone else I have some ground to stand on here. I completely understand that people can be triggered by this type of imagery and will at least skip this particular scene or episode, I promise I’m not talking about you guys.

You wanna know who I am talking about though? The weird ass moral police I’ve been watching mobilize. It’s crazy how people are making a big deal out of this. I’ve seen three arguments and all of them are terrible in themselves and being used to justify terrible behavior.

I’ve only seen people claim three major things, this is a bad depiction of a s/a survivor and situation, this is something that’s too graphic and immoral to put in a TV show, the fact that the singing and dancing lightens the tone in a way people find distasteful. I’m going to be trying to prove why I find these arguments mostly ridiculous and unfounded.

As for argument one, s/a survivors come in all shapes and sizes and hyper sexuality happens to be an incredibly common reaction to sexual trauma. I haven’t watched episode one and two but even if I had I’d still have too small of a sample size to determine the entire tone of an incredibly messed up complex dynamic between too incredibly interesting and layered characters. It’s ridiculous to have so many assumptions and expectations of an *11 second leaked clip.*

Secondly. Creative freedom is possible the most important thing in art. If we didn’t have the freedom to put what we wanted on paper or on screen then we wouldn’t have had so much societal change recently. Just because you might find something distasteful and immoral doesn’t mean it absolutely has to be hated on and removed. It’s okay to not like things because you find them gross, it’s okay to not enjoy graphic depictions of serious subjects, it’s not okay to start internet wars over moral bullshit. It’s okay to be mad in silence sometimes, guys.

Thirdly. I kinda get this one, I don’t agree with it but I do understand the point. The idea you don’t want a serious subject framed with a sexy pop song is not inherently bad, it’s just something that makes me think you wouldn’t have liked Hazbin Hotel anyway. I actually appreciate the fact they are using the creative medium to make bold and shocking decisions but I get some people are sensitive to new things, that’s fine. Where this argument gets ridiculous is when people act like this is very out of line for a show like this. This isn’t a Saturday morning kids cartoon it’s and adult animated show about people in hell. It’s highly likely that this won’t be the worst thing we see, you either need to heed the trigger warnings at the beginning of each episode or get over it.

You’ll notice that I didn’t bring up anything about the merchandise pins or the storyboard artist, I did this because they aren’t arguments but barely related attempts at character assassinations. When you spend five minutes thinking about them critically you come to realize that there is nothing substantial to those arguments.

I’d like to finish up talking about how I think this scene is doing more good than harm. It’s important to make people uncomfortable when you’re talking about things so horrible like s/a and rape. It shouldn’t be meek and palatable for a general audience, it should upset you. I remember hearing something in a video game once that stuck with me. There was a character who said that when you’re sick you need strong medicine and that the strongest medication is very bitter.

I think episode four will be some very bitter medicine.

An unhinged ramble about why I have a disliking for Voxval/Staticmoth from Hazbin Hotel and comparing them to my own OCs for what feels like 5 minutess:

This isn't what I normally post buut I wanna ramble about something I used to slightly likee (rant under the cutt) X"DD

I could go on and on about why I don't like Hazbin Hotel (you knoww, blasphemyy, Biblically inaccuratee, S/A glamorizationn, the voodoo stuffss, etc.), buut I'm not gonna do that todayy, today I'm gonna talk about Voxvall (or Staticmoth buut I'm gonna call them Voxval), the ship between Vox and Valentino from the signature show itselff

My problem with Voxval iss, welll, is that neither of the characters have characterr. To be precisee, they're supposed to be villains but they lack what it takes to be actuall, intimidating villainss, often being used with one or two personality traits in mind and nothing moree (Specifically Valentinoo)

In his introduction in episode 2 alonee, Val is simply called something of a whiny crybabyy, which is what he acts like throughout the majority of the time he gets screentime in the episodee (I know about episode 4, I'll discuss it laterr). He doesn't look intimidating at alll, something that he should be considering the build-up we had gotten from the comics Viv made in the pastt, or with Addictt, or with the texts/calls Angel had been getting from him throughout the episodee

He doesn't have much of a characterr, he's not intimidating and he doesn't appear to actually act like a threateningg, serious villain throughout his introduction at alll, which is why it feels so jarring when we see the texts Angel's getting from Val to Val throwing a temper tantrum on Velvet's call with Voxx

If anythingg, if Val was so upsett, he would've come to the hotel himself before Vox even showed upp, he would've tracked Angel down on his ownn! (the guy owns the porn industryy! He'd have connections or witnesses that would see Angel at the Hotel and tell him through thatt) He knew Angel was at the hotel prior to Vox coming theree! Why didn't he come there on his ownn, that would've made him an actual threatt!

Buut nooo, we didn't get thatt, we got Vox calming Val down as ship-baitt-

"Buut Kevinn! What about the Val in episode 4!" The Valentino in episode 4 is literally word for word based off of R2's r*peficc, plus they storyboarded both Addict and the video for Poisonn. It's artificiall

Speaking of Voxx, he's probably the best character in this show from voice alonee (and that's not saying muchh)

Vox here is reduced to the trope of just "comforting the big, strong mann" or simply being the straight mann, and I'm not here for itt, that's literally all he is throughout the entire episode with Valll-

Likee, neither of them have much of a personalityy, they have jobss, they have titless, buut not much of a personalityy

What's Val's character aside from being a rapistt? What's Vox's character except being a manipulatorr?

"Buut Kevinn! Val's cunning and manipulative andd-" Noo, you're lying to yourselff. You're thinking of fanon instead of realityy, you're thinking of Val from before the show actually came outt. I'm talking about the Val from the actual showw, the show that airs on Amazon Primee-

And they're canonn! They're canon from only after being in 2 (slightly 3 if you count episode 4) episodes together without next to no buildup whatsoeverr, 'cause of course R2 ships it tooo! And knowing that Viv's friends with R2 of course she's gonna make it canonn

Likee, I'd have not as much of a problem with it's sudden inclusion in the finale if it were actually built-up uponn, buut it's just suddenly there with nothing building up upon it prior to the finalee, it's jarringg, much like a lot of things within this showw

It would've been better if it were actually built up upon within the seasonn, and then actually having it appear in season 2 if the Vs were to get more screentimee

Seee, you can have ships with villains and make it workk. Much like a normal shipp, you have to build up upon it so that it doesn't feel artificial and appear at random out of nowheree.

Probably the best example that I could give of this would be the ship of my own OCss, Kabastion (that being Kevin and Sabastion from my own showw ((El Origen De Los Shadows)) respectivelyy

With Sabb, obviously he's a rapist and a murderer (no dip sherlock he's literally the main antag of season 1 because of thatt) but he's intimidatingg, from his introduction alone in the show you can already tell something's off with the guyy, he's actually shown to be manipulativee, rather than being a whiny crybabyy, he actually proves himself to be a threat by the end of episode and throughout the entirety of season 1-

With Kevinn, from where he is in his introductionn (juvie for murder and committing a sch**l sh**ting) and his description from Sab while he visited him in juvie in season 1, you can already tell that he's a threatt, moreso even with his behaviors proving himself to be that wayy, the guy's proven to be cunningg, manipulative and unpredictable along with other thingss, which is even moreso highlighted in season 2 alongside with his crimess-

Buut the thing iss: Their crimes aren't their characterr, it's not what their personality iss. They have a similar personality to each other and THAT'S THE ENTIRE POINTT, they're sadomasochistic psychopathss, Kevin would rather have a partner who's exactly like him so he won't get boredd, same with Sabb! And their relationship is built up upon throughout season 1 and highlighted in season 2!

I could talk about these two so much and how complex these two are buut that could be for your own character analysis for those who actually watch the showw ('cause they're meant to be analyzed and not taken at face valuee)

Anywayy, my point iss, is that if you want to make a good ship with two villainss, you need to make those villains have actual character and personality within the source materiall, Voxval has nothing with that to make their characterss, and in turn the shipp, appealing to those who don't indulge in fanonn

We pretty much have it certain that our chapter 3 guy is going to be a tv guy in some way/shape/ or form.

Meaning, if the allegations are true, I'm probably going to go insane and become insufferable when that happens.

Eviction Day took alot of power out of me that i haven't truly recovered from. (imagine having to draw that blue addison over and over again 12 hours straight for 4 months straight) so truthfully I'm a little burnt out by them.

Additionally, complicating the matter is I'm working on my college graduation film, Pretty Kitty!!, which, if you liked Eviction Day, this is Eviction Day but far more ambitious with stronger horror elements but with a fully original story.

Actually...Eviction Day was sort of test to see what I could get away with in the thesis film on the technical end...

But working on any film takes time, effort, and alot of my creative energy. This one in particular is draining my life force due to its' ambition (even my professors were concerned with just how ambitious it was).

Now, I DO have a few comic/art ideas, but whether i'll have the time and energy to create them is a mystery.

As far as animated stuff goes however, there will be no future spamton animations most likely.

However if you wanna imagine a new Corey spamton animation here is a Fun Fact

Eviction Day was 1 of 2 of the spamton animations I wanted to make!

There was another, however it never got past a few really rough storyboard thumbnails.

One thing a REALLY wanted to do was actually animate spamton transforming into NEO in a body horror type fashion because body horror is VERY fun to animate, especially in Spamton's case where I could make it horrifying in a physical and psychological sense.

However, what stopped me is was some friends saying that a few people may think the video was made for...less than tasteful.... reasons and may draw in the "wrong type of crowd" if you get what I'm saying.

They were a bit right with this as last time I made a body horror type video I got a few of those people in the comments.

So I made Eviction Day instead.

Will I ever make this video?

Probably not. But you can imagine it in your head.

(2024 edit: as of now, i unfortunately don't have time to make AVOT, nor the skills to make it yet, and the project i originally needed it for is no longer required, so unfortunately i won't be making AVOT as of now, but i still wanted to keep the posts up)

but if time allows before avg hits 1 million if im able to get a few seconds of animation done and maybe fit some of the storyboard in a video to submit for the reacting to fans animation thing i would really love to do that but thats a bit of a time crunch so we'll see :0

but when i do finish the storyboard i might show some of it here but not all of it as there are some things i wanna save for the final video as to not spoil it all :)

but by december i should be focusing on animating for sure after my exams and ill be able to show more progress here !!

30 Day Narnia Challenge #2

Day 2: Favorite movie?

The 2005 The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe adaptation has been one of my all time favorite movies ever, and when it comes to Narnia movies, it's almost a tie with Prince Caspian (which was my choice when I did this challenge back in 2016) and obivously they're both very well done. Most importantly, I appreciate how the filmmakers started the process of making both of them in spirit of trying to make a good film with a good story that's faithful to Lewis and in that aspect they succeeded (more or less - I'm looking at you, PC the movie!). In adition to that, they both have stunning videography, locations, costumes, props, the casting are all on point and the music really ties together films that will stand the test of time.

But since I wrote what makes it my favourite in my previous visit to this challenge, I would like to draw your attention to some other adaptations that may deserve your attention if you're a hardcore Narnia fan.

The Foucus on the Famliy Radio Theater did a marvellous audio adaptation of all the books, complete with good voice acting (multiple actors read multiple roles) and immersive background sound effects and music. If you're not into just a read-aloud audiobook, give this a chance!

The BBC miniseries adapted one mini-series LWW, did a single season PC with VDT where PC gets like 2 episodes and VDT is the rest and a miniseries adaptation of SC - the only screen adaptation of SC. Due to a much smaller budget than the Walden/Disney films, this one features a lot of very obvious puppetry, some way over the top costumes for Talking animals and some very awkward greenscreen. If you're there for the story, it might be fun for you, but if you're one of those people that cannot stand anything that isn't thouroughly done over by some sort of CGI, you'll be put off. The casting is a bit of a hit and miss, they could have done a better job with Lucy, Eustace was a good choice, he's delightfully annoying (in VDT that's a good thing!) and IMO Drinian was a total miss. Jill was a very good choice. Tom Baker as Puddleglum was decent enough. They casted Barbara Kellerman to play both the White Witch and Lady of the Green Kirtle, which can be confusing if you've never read the books (okay, it's kinda confusing even if you did) and she was a fairly decent choice though she can be very intense. My favourite performances come from Warwick Davies as Reepicheep and Samuel West as King Caspian in VDT (I might like them better than Ben Barnes and the Walden version of Reepicheep). Again, if you wanna try something that's not Walden and don't mind taxidermy Aslan and giant bowling pin beavers, I'd say go for it. It's fully freely available on YT.

Speaking of low-budget, there's a 1979 2D animated feature length LWW adaptation that was featured on CBS. For some reason it features the coolest way Aslan does away with the White Witch and Edmund with glasses which, as a gal with glasses, I thought was neat. Again, worthy of checking out if you're really into Narnia and don't mind shabby animation. This too is freely available to watch on YT. Some screencaps are so memeworthy though. As a fun fact, soon after, the same studio went into pre-production for an adaptation of The Magician's Nephew. They went as far as had the first two or three chapters planned in storyboards, however the production was scrapped due to unknown reasons. There's a YT video the girls at TheLionsCall made when one of them purchased said Magician's Nephew storyboards here

I've only ever seen the promo videos and shots for the Logos Theater productions, but have never seen the shows because I don't live in the USA, but I would very much like to.

1. Find an idea

I usually get my ideas from tiktoks or some songs.

I kinda try to fit the song to the character I want in it lmao

2. Download the audio

I’m an android phone user so downloading stuff is really easily.

I usually use YTMP3.com to download my stuff

there is a lot of websites with that link but l usually pick the second or first one

Then insert the audio in Alight Motion. I use Alight Motion a lot since there’s a lot of choices there.

Also I use the APK version so I don’t have to pay for premium features. ALSO THIS IS ON MY PHONE. I use an Ipad to draw….

3. (Optional) Storyboarding

The only animatic I did need to storyboard was Floyd’s little minecraft song angst video LMAOOO:

a lot of people happen to storyboard their animatics so they have a plan but i literally storyboard in my head and if i think it looks good, i just put it in 😭😭😭

4. START DRAWING

In my drawing process, it’s kinda easy unless I’m using a bunch of colors.

I also try to change the styles up so you can differeniate the animatics from eachother like how in Jade’s Laufey video, the colors are warm and soon turn pale and cold. And in the To Love a Boy, it’s like pt 2 of Jade’s Laufey video but in MC’s perspective and in which the MC does not return his feelings so the colors aren’t warm as Jade’s perspective.

And then in Azul’s Laufey video, the appearance and color palette’s looks very sweet and valentiney since it’s in the MC’s perspective on having a FAT FUCKING CRUSH on Azul

Epel was the hardest because during that time, I was not that active on TikTok and school took my time so it took a lot of time to gain back the motivation and finish it

ALSO, i literally draw on my Ipad now and I send the pictures to my phone to edit them so it’s an annoying process since I DON’T WANNA PAY FOR ALIGHT MOTION WHEN I CAN GET IT FOR FREE

5. Editing

Okay, I’m so happy that I actually got into editing for a bit because my videos would’ve looked so trash bro

LMSOOO but editing animatics aren’t really that hard unless you’re going for a specific transition or movement

I guess the transition that pissed me off the most were the ones in Jade’s Laufey video when it switches from warm to cold and Epel’s MLP video where it switches from silly to dark.

My editing process isn’t that unique. I just insert the song, move the pictures, and done 😭😭😭

6. Touch-ups

Touch-ups include subtitles, effects, filters, etc

I don’t really use filters for my animatics unless i’m going for something

BUT SUBTITLES?? yeah I use them a lot lmao

But also trying to fit the subtitles with the animatic is hard bc IDK WHAT TO GO FOR so i literally pull them out my ass

Can't believe I forgot to post this here. But HERE IT IS!! HUGE announcement for the future of my YouTube channel, and that includes a certain show I've been writing for the better part of 3 years now...

Point 2- BATIM: Rewritten is still being worked on, but I'm cutting the voice acting and will probably cut back a lot of the criticism section to make room for the actual outline for the Rewrite itself. Hoping to be done soon!

Point 3- Videos will be disappearing from my YouTube channel and moving to a second one, in case the copyright gods strike my channel down or something. Don't wanna risk a strike!

Point 4- FOLLYCHROMATIC IS OFFICIALLY BEING WORKED ON!! The pilot is being storyboarded, and once it's done, I'm gonna start streaming my animation progress. There's a preview in the video itself complete with sound effects, but no music or voice acting so far.

I keep posting my covers but I am SOOOOO proud of this one. I did this one for an animation/storyboard I wanna work on which is why it was so short, but made a video for it in the meantime.

My favorite thing is making Teto sound like she's in the most emotional pain of her life. I struggle to take her as a joke and like to make her tragic. The animation will make this worse :D

Gonna go off on twst animatic woes, buckle up.

Someday I’ll make twst animatics at the level of the other crap shitposts on my youtube channel. Crazy how only like, a handful were ever posted out of the …uhh 30 something actually made. I find joy in private stuff.

…BUT WHEN I DO, only then will the thirst traps properly start. And the constant constant copyright claims because I’m poor :,)

I like how I keep telling myself “Oh SOMEDAY” as if that day will ever come. IT WAS REALLY CLOSE AT ONE POINT THOUGH!! Because I FOUND pre-production thumbnails and drawings shoved in the back of my medibang files. And I was like “oh yeaah i forgot I was doin’ that, wonder why I stopped”, then I remembered “Oh right. I am sad most of the time brrrrr”

I wanna redo didney movie scenes or recreate other existing anime crud like how I used to watch japanese yugioh artists on niconico douga did.

THAT or take a shot at boarding actual in-story stuff, but I’m so beyond picky. Naturally I’d have to sub it in captions, yeah. And my go-to will be the official translations for broader material (cuz tbh I don’t think it’s that big a to-do as others think) but any omitted lines I’d want to include, cuz y’know, it’s what they’re saying, but I recognize direct fan-translators are a little more protective of their personal translations regardless of how little the line is. And I’m awkward. Am I making this more complicated? 100%. This is how I psyche myself out of doing much of anything.

I think I got too rusty with storyboarding as it is. (Psyching out x2)

Aside from the obvious stuff, I think I have a few ideas that folk haven’t really tackled yet?? But i also don’t know. You see, I’m prattling now.
