Lancer Tactics devlog

I'm gonna try out posting my ~monthly devlog roundup here as well. These suckers are glorified changelogs with anecdotes and gifs galore. Let me know if this is something you like seeing show up on your dash?

Map Editor

Got units able to be placed/deleted/moved in the mission editor

Can paint/remove command zones in the editor

Can paint minecraft-like terrain blocks in the editor

Can paint/rotate multi-tile props in the editor

Can edit unit character sheets and portrait via the editor

3D maps

Did a bunch of art tests with 3D mech models, provided by GeneralChaos, which we ended up deciding not to go with to keep things simple.

To avoid the can of worms that is animation, we'd have to lean into a static "tabletop minatures" aesthetic which we decided is not a style we want to be stuck with. By sticking with 2D sprites, we avoid falling into a sort of uncanny valley; it's easier to get away with not animating a 2D sprite than it is for a 3D model.

 We also experimented with 3D terrain. We decided to make a rule that the visual style for a piece of terrain should match its mechanical effect: obstructing terrain that you can't move through, such as rocks or buildings, will be in 3D, while non-obstructing terrain like trees will stick with 2D sprites.

Hooking up the 3D camera to follow events like movement and attacks did a LOT for making it starting to feel like it's cohering into an Actual Game™

Implemented cover! And an attack preview! Cover works by aiming a ray from the target to the originator (technically to and from each voxel of each, respectively, to handle size 2s shooting above size 1 cover) and tracking all the terrain blocks it hits (how we'll handle non-terrain hard cover TBD). I think I have it working according to Perijove's cover rules manual, but I'm sure there'll be edge cases to work out. This is a case where things are significantly simplified by working in squares instead of hexes; hexes have a lot more possible weird angles you have to deal with.

Re-added what I'm stubbornly calling Combat Popcorn; little bits of text that pop out when you use abilities and attacks.

UI & game screens

Added ability for the engine to show UI that's anchored to the game world via a little word bubble line but also stay on screen as the camera moves around.

Got word bubbles working; you can now write dialogue in the mission editor, hit playtest, and see it work in a mission! (it does actually translate correctly now; this gif is just from a bug I thought was funny)

Got ability effects mostly behaving appropriately again, including muzzle flashes. The easiest way to handle them ended up being NOT billboarding them so they always face the camera (like all other 2D sprites in the game); instead, I put them on a plane parallel with the ground and just spin them around the unit to point at wherever their target is.

Did some work ironing out our tooltip system. The standard in CRPGs these days is this kind of nested labyrinth of tooltops that you see in Baldur's Gate 3:

I Did Not Want to try and figure out how to wrangle that much UI, so we're instead opting to cap the nested tooltips at the second layer. You can lock a general tooltip for e.g. an action and then mouseover various items within that tooltip to get glossary definitions...

...and then instead of having those glossary tips be lockable/mouse-overable themselves, I collect all related terms to that glossary definition and let you tab through them.

Added skin overlay functionality to the portrait maker, enabling textures like scars, tattoos, stubble, and vitiligo to be applied to just the skin and not extend off into space.

Midway through writing this update, Carpenter sent me this gif of the randomization button working! There's a still a bunch of skintones/assets missing and a few are a bit janky, but it was exciting to start seeing the range of these lil freaks (affectionate) that this editor can create.

Mourning cloak license!

This is the one I'm probably most excited about: I did a bit of a content dive and implemented a basic character sheet + all Mourning Cloak traits and equipment. They don't have fancy graphics yet, but the weapons and systems can be added via the character sheet and used in-game.

It took a little under a day, including adding soon-to-be common mechanisms like bonus damage. This is great news in that it means the engine we've been building for so long in the abstract seems to do a great job in handling comprehensive actual game content, and that it looks like we've set ourselves up for success when it comes time to buckle down on churning that out.

I'm sure other licenses will come with unique difficulties (I fear the day it comes time to do the Mule Harness // Goblin CP) but I'm feeling good about it!

Vertical slice?

Taking a step back, the pressing question on my mind has been "when will we have a playable early access build?"

I was originally hoping for Feb/March, but what we've internally been referring to as the "3D cataclysm" has pushed everything back by at least three months, so the target for the first alpha build is now in May. So, ah, thanks for your patience! Seeing things come together, I've become more and more convinced that moving to 3D was the right call.

SO a few months ago Y/N started working on an SMP with some minimal custom mods, some fancy texture packs, maybe some data packs, and its like this BIGGG project, BUT its not public and its taking a lot of her time, so she can only really do a few streams and most of the time because her schedule is so full its hard to work out streams with friends so, she is alone. with the internet being the internet people started to think something was up, some annoyed viewers made a few rumours and people kept making things up and escalating things until people were saying she did all sorts of horrible things to “lose all her friends” but one of the most popular theories was that she was emotionally abusing them (??? Internet wildin ig) she ignored them while mostly finishing the stuff for the smp, but decided to address it in a very- y/n way. Getting four friends to come to her house and hide slightly off camera while she made a purposefully bad apology video only for them to jump out at the end and her to stand up and be like “YALL REALLY THOUGHT I WAS SOME MASTER MANIPULATOR?! I’M JUST A FUNKY LITTLE CHAOTIC MINECRAFT GOBLIN N’ I’VE BEEN WORKING ON AN SMP THIS WHOLE TIME!! ITS GONNA BE SUPER COOL AND THESE FOUR PLUS ALOOOOT MORE PEOPLE ARE GONNA BE THERE I’M POSTING THE CREATORS SOON AND ITS LAUNCHING IN A MONTH!, SO STOP ASSUMING I’M A BAD PERSON AND GET PUMPED BITCHES!” something along those lines, maybe at the end a little peek at what people are responding with. Roaring Rumors

Life was all about sacrifices.

Or, that’s what you keep telling yourself when you’re up at 1AM working on your server. Putting together an SMP is harder than it sounds; texture packs, data packs, comparability, world-building, even the (seemingly) simply act of contacting people to play on it. For the amount of time you spent on your computer, your hands might as well be part of your keyboard.

Sleep wasn’t the only thing you sacrificed. Streaming, even just fun ones with your friends, had quickly became rare. Although you loved to hop on a call while coding still, your online presence had severely receded.

You just keep telling yourself that sacrifices are necessary. That the payoff would be worth it.

And it really would be, but you just had to get there first. Which was proving harder than you had thought.

At the very least, you still had your friends. Wilbur sitting silently on call with you while you work, Tommy dragging you out of your room, Ranboo always willing to get excited over your progress. Every day you woke up with a text from your groupchat—typically Charlie—just filling you in on the latest internet trend by a meme.

Today, your news comes from Wilbur and Tommy.

“I think they’re canceling you.” Wilbur says casually while you’re in the midst of detailing the hunger bar for a texture pack.

“Ooh, you’re a wrong’un!” Tommy yells in the background of Wilbur’s side of the call.

The three of you had been idly chatting while each doing your own thing. Wilbur and Tommy were engaged in some Twitter competition, as far as you know.

“Canceling me for what?” You ask, deciding to ignore Tommy’s shouting.

“Existing, I think.” Wilbur answers.

“So the normal.”

“The normal.”

Although the conversation stops there, you can’t help yourself. Later, during one of the few hours you dedicate to getting sleep to stay alive, you pull open Twitter on your phone. Your last tweet was nearly two weeks ago, so it’s been a minute.

But you just want to make sure nothing horrible happened while you were busy. You’re a content creator, this is normal. Definitely. You definitely aren’t just justifying this so you can do it.

You swipe through tweets, heading to trending and searching your name. Tweets load, making your mouth run dry. Wilbur wasn’t joking.

All you can do is scroll, reading as the messages get wilder and wilder. From people saying they were missing you to theories on why nobody was streaming you. Each one seemed considerably more implausible, and before you know it you’re glaring at your screen like it’s to fault.

Some thought you had grown apart.

Some thought you had a falling out.

And, apparently, a lot thought you were emotionally abusing them. Or, depending on the tweet, manipulating them.

Quite honestly, you didn’t even know how they got the idea. The long threads of explanations did nothing but send you into a spiral, biting your bottom lip so hard that it bleeds.

You were so close to finishing the SMP. It needed just a few things, then you'd be able to start scheduling to get it up and running. You didn't have the time nor mental capacity to deal with whatever the fuck is going on right now.

Is it a good choice? Maybe not. But do you still ignore the accusations? Hell yes.

By the time you get even closer to finishing the preparations for your SMP, you've come up with the perfect plan to address the (quite stupid) rumors. It'll be a two-in-one; you address the rumors and announce the SMP at the same time.

"How long do I have to lay on this floor?" Tommy asks, stretched out behind your chair.

"Nobody asked you to lay on the floor." Wilbur points out, standing next to your computer. Charlie, on the other side, laughs.

"Yeah man, you wanted to be down there."

"Besides, I'm doing great down here!" Ranboo chimes in.

You roll your eyes, grinning. "I'm about to start stream, so it won't be for much longer. Just wait for my cue, yeah?"

Tommy grumbles, but shuts up. You take that as your chance to start the stream, switching it off your waiting screen and waving to the camera. Your chosen stream title has brought in a bit more than your usual casual steam view number, "Talking about some serious stuff," leading people to believe there will be drama. And if it's drama they want, it's drama you'll give.

"Hello, hello!" You smile, leaning back. "So I've decided to talk about some things. Namely, the Twitter shit. I am so sorry for everything, and I mean that. A lot. Sincerely. There's meaning in it."

Tommy snorts, and from the corner of your eye you catch Wilbur kick him to shut him up.

"What am I sorry about?" You ask rhetorically, acting like you read it off of chat. "Oh, you know. People have been saying all types of stuff. The things about me manipulating my friends?" There's a pause while you let that sink in. "So, I'm sorry."

It's a purposefully shitty apology, but you sigh and act like its heartfelt for a few moments, nodding towards chat. Their messages are mostly confused, especially because it isn't one emote-only.

"Sorry you guys are so gullible!" You shout, and Tommy practically tackles you.

Wilbur's the one to fix your chair, Ranboo and Charlie appearing next to you within moments.

"You guys really thought this one could manipulate me? The master?" Charlie asks the stream, pointing at you.

"Yeah!" Tommy shouts, way too energetic for someone who complained five minutes ago about being on the floor. "We're the master manipulators! Get fooled!"

"I, for one, haven't manipulated anyone-" Ranboo starts, but Tommy slaps a hand over his mouth and nods empathetically.

"Yeah, I don't know what you guys were thinking, but I've just been playing fucking Minecraft for the past few months nonstop." You laugh.

"Nonstop. It's a problem." Wilbur nods.

"It is not a problem!" Pause. "Anyways, I made an SMP! And that's where I've been! Not because I've been manipulating my friends or some shit, stop being dumbasses."

"It'll be super cool!" Ranboo adds in helpfully.

"These four-"

"That's us!" Charlie points around at himself, Wilbur, Tommy, and Ranboo.

"-will be on it, plus a lot more. It'll be posting those people soon! As in, check your Twitter obsessively guys! The SMP will be in about a month, too, so get fucking excited! I want to see some hype!"

"WOO!" Tommy screams, making everyone cringe at having their eardrums ruptured.

"So that's all I wanted to talk about I think. Anything to add, guys?" You glance around at the four surrounding you with a grin.

"One thing." Charlie nods, leaning in really close. "I have a secret. This SMP, it's actually-" He hits your end stream button mid-sentence. "And that's how you keep 'em interested."

I wanna to talk about BigB's red scroll because the more I think about it the more I'm convinced it actually does have some significance

Ok so we're all aware of BigB having a different coloured scroll than other players

We were told by Grian on Reddit that the scroll is different because BigB isn't using the servers texture pack (the one that changes everyone's armor so their skins are more visible) and sure enough when we watch his p.o.v the players armor is not changed

The thing that gets me is that when you watch Grains episode HE DOESN'T HAVE THE TEXTURE PACK EITHER?!

And his scroll is the same as everyone else's

So why is BigB's scroll different? I think the most obvious answer is probably that the armor texture pack and the scroll resource pack are separate, but even then why is there a version of the red scroll in the first place? Someone must've made the pixel art for this so why make two different versions of the same art if it's not gonna be relevant at some point.

I know people were theorizing that BigB's session 1 task was actually meant to be a red life tasks, but now that we've seen his session 2 task I'm not sure anymore. I don't think calling mobs by anything other than their name would make for a very interesting task for a red name. I do suspect that red tasks are not only going to be a different look but are also going to be more violent to other players but idk

Maybe the red scroll texture really is meant to be used once people are on their red life, but since BigB is still green it's still giving him green life tasks

Since session 1 and 2 were both recorded on the same day BigB probably didn't have a chance to address whatever was causing the difference, so I guess we'll have to wait until next episode to see if anything has changed

Anyways I'm done rambling now so what do y'all think?

hey i just wanted to say that this is my favorite resource pack probably ever, even if it isn't out yet!! i absolutely adore all the custom models you made and i don't think i could choose ONE favorite thing even if i tried so im gonna list some things i really like: - the little tuft of wool on sheep heads - the offset snout on the pig - the brown mooshroom having lines as markings while the red ones have spots (THAT WAS ACTUALLY GENIUS) - the stars on the phantom's undersides - PIGEONS - the custom model you made for the skeletons!! it never sat right with me how minecraft skulls have the exact same shape as a regular head - BLUE FISH!!!! MY ONE TRUSTED FRIEND THE BLUE FISH FROM MINECRAFT - all of your vanilla shulkers PLUS the pride shulkers - the "little guys" as the spawn eggs!! they're all so cute!!! - making the zillagers bluescreened villagers was SO SMART - vending machine witch !!!! what more could you want in life?? i'm not even normally a big fan of "cute" resource packs, i feel like a lot of them try too hard, but there's just something about this one that really scratches an itch i didn't even know my brain had! i will ABSOLUTELY be finding a way to use this pack when it comes out!! if i have to take all the textures and port the models over to java myself just to have a chance to play with them then i will!! oh also if you've done the bat already can you please send me a link to them if you answer? i love bats i wanna see what you did with it :D

THEY'RE LITERALLY MAKING FUN OF YOU

So since history repeats itself people are being annoying about Minecraft again, but this time it's because they're getting weirdly prissy about the fact that the devs don't want to completely overhaul the game every update and only add a couple little things each time, since, you know, Minecraft clearly isn't meant to be a maximalist game like Terraria or whatever. It's kind of insane how you can't bring up Minecraft without some being like "uhhuhuhu but update smol"

I could literally go on and on about how that dumb that whole opinion is (getting free updates for a decade+ old game is a blessing, no matter what) but the funny thing is, their new April Fools joke update is LITERALLY MAKING FUN OF THOSE PEOPLE AND NONE OF THEM ARE GETTING IT

What did they add? A whole new dimension! A whole new boss! A bunch of new mobs! So many new items!

But guess what?

That dimension? 95% of it is just retextures and lol xd so randum XPPP renames of existing blocks in the shape of a floating island scape, which iirc was an old world generation type? Who cares, Gamers LOVE floating islands in Minecraft, right? Just dump it in

The boss? Basically just a slime scaled in the z direction a bit with a different texture, and all it does is you hit it and it spawns in waves of enemies, of course most of the later waves being REALLY hard cuz Gamers LOVE difficulty in games, right? Just toss a swarm of really hard mobs at them, and they're satisfied, clearly. Its home is even just a Nether Bastion but retextured

All the new mobs are just remakes of old ones with new textures, and most of the new items are just tons of new colored objects like peels and junk to fill in the item count numbers. The only one that is fundamentally new is a grappling hook type thing, which, to be fair, is actually cool. Normally I'd say it completely breaks how you move in the game, but considering the Elytra exists that's clearly not a thing they're too opposed to, and honestly, like honestly honestly, without irony, who doesn't love Spiderman mechanics? The Elytra created a whole new brand of movement-based puzzle map, I bet a non-potato themed grappling hook could bring us that too (it already looks like the new hammer's gonna do the same)

But okay apart from that one item, this is literally the most shallow, pointless version of what "the fans" have been asking for for ages. The type of Aether-lookalike mod makers just dump into the game without much care (No disrespect to Aether ofc, they were the OGs). 

And the problem is, those people they're making fun of ACTUALLY WANT THIS. In the comments of the announcement video, they're all like "If only they put this much effort into a REAL update" AS IF MORE GENERIC, RESKINNED JUNK = MORE EFFORT. They do, truly, just want the devs to forgo all solid creative intention and just swamp the game with more "stuff" to do.

And the most annoying part is, THEY LITERALLY CAN DO THAT THEMSELVES ALREADY. Mods can literally ruin the whole game and turn the game into Call of Duty with Alchemy, 30 different dimensions, trillions of new mechanics and items, and tons of other stuff if you only want it to. I bet you my soul that the devs already know that, and want to give vanilla players something different, because if they're bothering to play vanilla they clearly just don't WANT Minecraft to be that, even if they do want some new things. And even apart from mods, Bedrock (while objectively worse in a bunch of ways) DOES get frequent updates that add lots of stuff, even if that's mostly branded stuff they're doing as a promotional sort of thing. As far as I can tell, they're not just skin packs or a themed map or whatever, it seems like there's actual new mechanics and animations and stuff. 

I just don't get these people. They're so obnoxious about absolutely nothing at all.

Cherry blossom forests do not work at ALL for minecraft, and make the game look like half the textures were swapped for a 2015 kawaii texture pack. The color palette for this biome compared to the rest of minecraft clash so hard it's distracting, like an anime fan has a field day in aseprite. this looks bad.

I absolutely refuse to call this update "one point twenty", because it's NOT, it's update 3.0. updates went 1.8, 1.9, 1.1, 1.11, 1.12, that's not how decimals work. if we *were* at 1.9, the next logical step is 2.0, but for some reason nobody called it that. im no mathematician, but 1.20 is equal to 1.2.

Pottery feels like a mod. Not a good one, either. not even for minecraft mod standards. "oh you like creating things? create a pot!" why on earth would I build something small and lifelike with powers-worth of less combinations than if you were to build a house, or a castle, or whatever because it's minecraft. this feature doesn't tie into anything else, this is completely self contained and adds nothing except bloat to the game. why anyone would bother to do this in survival is beyond me.

I've been dying to rant about this one! Archaeology breaks minecraft's world building outright, and destroys any lore building to now. Minecraft has always had magic and occult themes; enchanting tools and items, pillagers and woodland mansions, potion brewing and witches, zombies and skeletons and giant spiders, the stronghold, the end portal (and igniting it via enemies' eyes), and now we have the most normal form of human science. if it was astronomy or botony or chemistry (alchemy would be sick but that's not a modern human science) then MAYBE but it ISN'T. it's fucking rocks. god knows they aren't gonna do anything creative like you find an ancient artifact or something, you just dust off "suspicious sand" and get in return just completely random and useless shit. If you're late game enough to start adventuring around in search of suspicious sand, why on EARTH would you need ANY of this?

now, to further this fruitless endeavor of adding more stuff from real life to make minecraft more "realistic" or whatever, why would they backpedal SO HARD to add the sniffer? An entirely fictional creature in an update with otherwise exclusively real life additions, there's no theme here. From what i've seen of the sniffer, it looks like a fine mob that actually has something worth adding to minecraft, it just digs around and has fun and acts like a big wacky turtle. love it. A+. why the fuck does it not spawn naturally. the only reason archaeology is useful to any degree to to spawn sniffers, and sniffers dont serve any functional purpose other than to rizzen up your base with ancient plants. why not just make sniffers dig up food for themselves, and then you can tame them to start digging up plants? having sniffers wander around would make the game way cooler, but instead they had to use them to justify a completely useless unrelated system to exist. god that pisses me off.

hi uh im bob, i made that old texture of the framed block in the player's hand on this account's banner a while ago. it's been replaced w a recolored version now i think (for the better) but it's a little surreal still seeing that in the wild. it's still on my worksheet, along w a remake using the torch palette i never pr'ed in.

Yes, i was holding the Framed block, the original screenshot was me showing the framed blocks all had literally no compatibility with the Valkyrien Skies mod! so you can make stone that actually floats,, i promise I'll change my banner with the exact same screenshot but different framed block texture (just gonna make a stone boat lol) whenever i have time

the textures are also looking pretty neat, the original one never really fit in minecraft in my opining, but who would use an empty framed block for decoration anyway... (me) (tho recommendation: add a texture pack to te mod with the "legacy" textures if you didn't already)

Making my own MCSM Texture Pack

Vunder won’t do anything about the textures in the map he’s making, so I’m gonna have to fill that role in. Not only have I made EVERY BANNER that I can find in both seasons into locked map data that you can display on the walls with invisible item frames, but I’ve also gone through 1.19 and re-textured blocks that didn’t exist in MCSM as a way to import textures and “fix” builds on his map.

So for example: I’ve re-textured pigs to look like Ruben:

Here’s a bunch of the re-textured 1/19 blocks which includes turning one of the frog-lights into town-fair lights/windows.

I’ve made locked maps with art that resembles even these “impossible” doors that are off-centered or too large to actually exist in vanilla minecraft. Best part is you can just leave the map up and keep a door behind it open and you can walk right through as if there was nothing there!

I’ve made “varied” texture maps for grass, dirt, stone, end stone, stone bricks, cracked stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, sand, netherrack, and more to give the appearance of MCSM’s look.

I’ve also re-textured Gold Armor and a Turtle Helmet to be GOLDEN GOLIATH and a functional underwater dive helmet from Season 2. As well as adding texture to shields to look like Radar’s shield from Season 2. I’ve also re-skinned NBT tagged Nether Stars and Flint and Steel to be Gabriel’s amulet and the enchanted blue Flint and Steel.

Here’s more of the banners that I’ve painstakingly made pixel by pixel from screenshots. If I was able to import the original textures, I used those, but the rest have been done by hand by me.

All of this exists in a tower I made which have command blocks that give you whichever map you need. That way I can easily access any of the map data and use it for my builds/beautification projects.

I may have bought Minecraft for my computer. I also am reminded harshly every time I open it that I do in fact have a texture pack going on my Switch (it’s the free updated texture beta pack in the marketplace, I don’t know how to get in on Java, tho I could just actually go find texture packs or shaders now so…)

It’s really just the look of ores that is jarring but like it’s fine

I like having an off hand that is functional for more than just holding maps and shields. Love being able to place torches with it.

Don’t like that flying in creative mode is so floaty. That’s not fun.

I did have to redo the keybinds for the mouse. On Switch, break blocks/attack is ZR and place blocks/use is ZL so it makes more sense for my brain for them to be right click and left click respectively. The mouse wheel scroll through the hot bar is gonna take some getting used to, as well as the number keys. I love the middle mouse button pick-block thing in creative. I’ve seen it used by a few YouTubers and I was like how do I do that? I don’t think you can do it on the Switch.

I’m horribly bad at WASD controls, but that’s honestly just a universal for me. Part of why Binding of Isaac is so rough for me (besides just being bad at it) is because of WASD (and the arrow keys) (and I’m bad at it). I just really prefer the two analog sticks on my switch for move/camera. I’m getting better tho. As long as my cursor doesn’t glitch and stay on screen we’re fine.

I found out that if I don’t put it in full screen my computer doesn’t overheat as fast (or at all really). Learned this after my entire computer froze while I was playing and also screen recording (lost the screen record btw which was fine I didn’t like how it was going anyway). Don’t know what this means other than I play on a five year old MacBook Air, not known for being particularly beefy machines.

I like that the pause screen actually pauses. It doesn’t always on my switch. I got in the habit of just turning the switch off when I have to go away for a sec.

I love that I can make an actual custom skin and not really have to worry about the game resetting it randomly (a problem I have on my Switch). The skin I made is so cute. It’s got teal hair and horns and overalls and cute little black and purple markings on one arm. It’s got purple eyes! Really said: “what would make teenage me happy? And went with it.

(I wanna be clear that I love playing Minecraft on my Switch. It was the first place I ever played it, I love the controls, I love Bedrock edition even if it is a little funky sometimes. There’s just some things I’m seeing with Java that I really like also.)

Oh and my favorite: single biome worlds. I forgot that was a thing in Java Edition, and I am so pumped. I don’t like doing super hard challenges (I will probably never play a Hardcore game; I rarely play on Normal difficult as it is), but the challenge of “you have one biome and you have to make it work” is very very tasty.

So a very lovely Rosh Hashanah gift to me, and a good way of making myself feel a little better after one of our cats died this week.

(Oh and is Keep Inventory not considered a cheat in Java? I made a peaceful world with it and was able to do that while also keeping “allow cheats” set to off. If so, this is very good news bc it is a cheat on Bedrock and I have no sense of direction and if I die without keeping my inventory I will have to start from scratch minus whatever I have at my home.)

Tommy frowned, staring.

Michael stared back.

Tubbo and Ranboo could only watch this scene unfold, somewhat expecting that this would happen between their friend and their son. What they didn't expect was how quiet Tommy was.

It was silent in the room for a minute or two more, before Tommy reached out a hand and softly booped the top of Michael's nose. The zombie piglin let out a honk of approval, making Tommy's eyebrows raise in amusement. With the piglin happy, the boy turned to face Michael's parents.

"I don't think this is a dog, fellas."

Tubbo and Ranboo both released large sighs of relief that they didn't even know they were holding in, Tommy slightly tilting his head in confusion.

"Well, we said he wasn't a dog, Tommy. We said he was our son."

"Some people call their dogs their kids, so I could only guess."

As the best friends talked, Ranboo gazed over at Michael with affection, feeling a grin spread across his face. What Ranboo didn't expect, however, was how closely Michael seemed to be watching Tommy.

Surprising Ranboo again, the piglin stood up on wobbly legs, trotting over to where Tommy was leaning on a piece of furniture. Snorting, he clutched on to one of Tommy's legs, leading Tommy to jolt from the sudden contact a little, before instinctively trying to lean away from Michael. Recognizing that Tommy was having a bit of a rough time at the moment, Tubbo leaned down and carefully removed Michael's arms from Tommy's leg, mumbling soft words of comfort and encouragement to both Tommy and Michael.

After Michael was removed, Tommy had to take a moment to catch his breath and clear his thoughts, his eyes shutting for a moment as he muttered unintelligible words to himself. Tubbo and Ranboo waited for him to recover, Michael watching with curiosity.

"A'ight, I'm okay now," Tommy inhaled deeply, letting out an equally deep exhale before opening his eyes again.

"I'm really sorry about that-" Ranboo began to apologize before getting cut off by Tommy.

"Nah, don't apologize, big man. Michael's a fetus, he doesn't know about complicated adult things like trauma."

Tubbo let out a snort of laughter, which Michael tried to copy the sound of.

"He's not normally physically affectionate like this on first meetings," Ranboo spoke, though mostly to himself more than anyone else.

Michael let out a squeal of frustration, alerting the trio to the piglin trying to wiggle out of Tubbo's arms. Tubbo and Ranboo's ears stood up in surprise at the sudden noise, the two looking down at their son worriedly. Tommy had looked startled when Michael began his outburst, but now looked much calmer as he leaned down a little to come face-to-face with Michael.

Tubbo and Ranboo's surprise grew even bigger as Tommy began to make squealing and oinking noises himself, causing Michael's fit to stop. The piglin's eyes were wide with excitement as Tommy spoke, his stubby arms starting to wave in excitement as he continued his excited honking, which Tommy responded to as well.

"What the fuck," Tubbo whispered in shock, his eyes wide, and Ranboo had to agree with him there.

Tommy proceeded to sit down on the floor, glancing up at Tubbo with a lopsided smile. "You can put 'em down, Big T. It's alright."

Following Tommy's instructions, Tubbo set his son down, who immediately sprinted towards the blonde at high speeds. He halted in his tracks when Tommy barked out another noise, one that Ranboo and Tubbo didn't understand, that brought Michael to a slower pace. It sounded somewhat familiar to Ranboo, but he didn't know why.

Michael ended up standing in front of a seated Tommy, the taller boy laughing as he reached out his hand slowly. The piglin stepped forward slowly, moving to grip one of Tommy's fingers gently, which allowed Tommy to carefully wrap his hands around Michael, lifting him up to eye level. Tommy let out a small noise again, causing Michael to oink in delight.

Smirking with satisfaction, Tommy looked back over at the stunned parents, sticking out his tongue a little. "Surprise, motherfuckers."

"HOW DID-" Tubbo began to belt out, quickly stopped by Ranboo by the taller boy pressing down on Tubbo's head gently. With this sign from Ranboo, Tubbo cleared his throat, continuing to speak.

"Tommy, and I mean this in the nicest way possible: how the fuck did you do that?"

"Wot? You jealous that I can speak piglin?"

Ranboo was learning so much today that he didn't expect in any way whatsoever.

"One," the enderman spoke, trying to keep his voice at a calm level while his husband stood slack-jawed. "Yes, I am. Two: how do you know piglin?"

The shit-eating grin on Tommy's face grew wider upon seeing how he stunned his friends, causing him to look back at Michael and speak in piglin once more, making the kid chirp out happily.

"Tomathy Danger Careful Kraken Innit Minecraft, you tell me what you just said to him right now," Tubbo folded his arms, trying to hide the previous shock on his face with little-to-no success. Ranboo, meanwhile, now had to process the fact that he had never known Tommy's full name.

"I just told him that I was cooler than the both of you," Tommy barked out a laugh, Michael giggling along with him as Tommy set him back down on the ground.

"Anyway," the blonde continued, watching as Michael began to walk in circles around him. "I learned piglin from Techno. He suggested we use it for commands in battle so nobody else would understand what we were saying."

It suddenly made sense what Tommy had said to Michael that sounded familiar. Ranboo had heard Technoblade use that exact sound when they were exploring in the nether, and had come face-to-face with a piglin squadron. "Wait, were you telling Michael to approach safely?"

"Hell yeah, Ranboob" Tommy gave a thumbs-up, Michael trying to copy the gesture with his own hooves. "When I was still living with him as well, I'd go to the Nether when we had nothing else to do. Yeah, the Nether is a horrible shitty place and I want nothing to do with it, but it was the only way I could make friends while I was still in exile."

"WAIT," Tubbo's eyes widened even more, his face looking like it might split open from surprise. "You spoke with piglins in the Nether!?"

Tommy's reply was shooting finger-guns towards his best friend with a grin, with Michael trying to copy them once more.

"As fascinating as this conversation is, and trust me, I'm absolutely going to ask you to death about this," Ranboo pointed at Tommy in a jokingly accusatory manner. "Tubbo, I think we just lost our son."

Tubbo looked towards Michael, the little one trying intensely to copy Tommy's movements. "God damn it Tommy, you stole our son."

"Hey, I'm not stealing him," Tommy protested with laughter, reaching over to gently pet Michael's head, Ranboo noticing how his touch lingered on the thin layer of hair, stroking it softly. Ranboo noted to himself that piglin hair seemed like a comfort texture to Tommy. He’d tell Tubbo about it later, but for now he’d play along with the bit of his friend stealing his son. “Oh really? Then why’s our son copying you?”

“Because I’m the coolest uncle.”

Silence stretched throughout the room once more, with both Tubbo and Ranboo’s eyes wide. The small on Tommy’s face slowly changed into a worried one, and he looked away from the couple and at the ground. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t know if-”

“Watch how hard I can cry,” Tubbo mumbled, his eyes looking bright with joy before he went to Tommy’s side, kneeling down to give him a genuine smile. “Tommy, dude, I think that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Even better than Ranboo proposing to me.”

“Um, rude,” Ranboo giggled, kneeling at Tommy’s other side and allowing Michael to climb up on his lap. “But yeah, I know what Tubbo’s getting at. We weren’t sure if you would even want to be Michael’s uncle-”

“Wot?” Tommy sounded genuinely surprised at that, his own eyes wide. “Why wouldn’t I want to be? He’s my best friend-brother’s son!”

“I mean, yeah, but after what happened with Techno, we weren’t sure if piglins would...”

Tommy fell quiet, his eyes shifting to gaze at the ground as uncertainty crossed his face. After a stretch of silence, only filled with Michael’s occasional chirring, Tommy gazed back at the two parents. “As complicated as my relationship with Techno might be, that shouldn’t impact this little guy,” Tommy bore his fangs in a grin, making Michael clap with his little hands. “Besides, I can understand him while you two can’t. Who else is gonna teach you two piglin without fuss?”

“Are you holding our child’s language for ransom?” Tubbo was about to playfully punch Tommy in the arm, but appeared to suddenly remember the situation and placed his hand back down.

“Noooo, but now you two need me.”

Ranboo rolled his eyes, making Tommy pretend-pout at him. Tommy folded his arms, faking disappointment. “You’re so mean to me, Ranboo. I take back my marriage blessing.”

“My husband! No!”

“We can elope, Ranboo. Tommy can’t stop us.”

“I’m holding your whole son for ransom then.”

“Actually, I don’t need my husband anymore.”

“Tubbo! How could you do this to me?

And Michael squealed with delight as the three continued on into the night.

and there's a 50% chance that when you go into your "enderwalk" state (the blackout) you blow something up, so there may or may not be an explosion somewhere nearby, you also have a 20% chance of building something small in you enderwalk state :)

You will be nice with today's post because it is my little sisters birthday. Give these characters a break, please.

Your last post actually included things I was gonna send the ask about. Clothes. Growing up in the nether the wither probably wasn't exposed to many different textures and you said that when in Rivendell Gem had refused to change into other clothes. Would they still be that way in the Overgrown?

There's foods they refuse to eat, not from taste, but from the texture of them. When trying new clothes they probably dislike it because it feels different, it feels, wrong. How does Gem finally come around to wearing a cloak, when did Sausage accept other clothes, find textures that don't feel wrong.

It's probably the same with the beds, they felt wrong, certain sheets and blankets more so than others, there's just so many new textures and feels that the Wither just, can't comprehend. Wither.exe has stopped working.

I'll send my ask about yesterdays post separately, instead imma make this post weird and definitely not thought of for multiple reasons until I dyed my hair last night.

Smell. Another thing we don't really know because of Minecraft, and I forget exists because I don't have it as a sense. Never had, never will. I remembered yesterday because apparently the water at my place smells like rotten eggs. The Wither would probably be used to smells of smoke and the nether. Here, all these plants have different scents (I'm going of what people have told me, I'm trying to describe something I literally don't have.) and the trees do too, even different water types have different scents. It seems like certain people have different scents as well, some more like blood or dirt or grass, some like flowers or fruit or whatever else kinds of scents there are. Pearl and Rick said it was soap and purfume that changed the scents of people,

There wasn't a room for one in the house, but Pearl and Rick took Gem and Sausage separately, to their disliking, to two rooms in the castle. A bathhouse, they were told. It was a big pool of water, with strange foam, soap bubbles. They didn't understand why they were there and why they were separated, on edge, thinking the rulers would drown them. Instead, the rulers handed them towels and told them to remove their outfits and cover themselves with the towel. After they had done that the rulers then explained that the giant water was a bath, and that the wither would get in with their towel, and learn to wash the piles of dirt and blood and sweat off. Neither of them were happy but ultimately kept their towels and climbed into the shallow end of the bath, it was warm. They kept their towels on the entire time as the rulers simply explained how to wash up and were allowed privacy to change back into their outfits. The rulers explained that when people start to stink they take baths to get and smell clean. The Wither, being from the nether, never learned to do so, or that smelling like they rolled in Hoglin waste is not always a good thing.

You were lucky there was no post planned for yesterday (today on the other hand...). I did prewrite a lot of stuff that isn't even remotely close to this point in time, so maybe you'll get to read in late February what I wrote (I should be writing other stuff, but oh boy this stuff is spicy).

Right, clothes. They would still kind of be that way. I guess they’d always prefer the more form-fitting clothes as opposed to baggier stuff (which can be easily grabbed and be a disadvantage in combat) and they would probably stick to the same or similar texture as what they were used to. At least, in the beginning, definitely. The cloak – that started with the comfort cloak. Gem didn’t like it, but it kept her fears in check, so she wore it. The rest is basically just becoming familiar through exposure. It wasn’t even that bad a texture once you’re used to it and quite, well, comfortable. And she did have enough time to get used to the texture. Though it still itches sometimes. Sausage was understandably a little freaked out when he woke up in not-his-uniform. These clothes were just too loose, itchy, just Not Good in general. But the alternative was not wearing clothes and I guess Xornoth did raise them right in that aspect, because Sausage never considered taking them off when Gem was nearby. Clothes were better than being naked, even though they were horrible. Later, Rick and Katherine would help to find him clothes that fit him, fit his needs and didn’t annoy the hell out of him. They found a couple sets, so he could alternate (something else they’d need to learn; you don’t have to wear one outfit for the rest of your life) and the other clothes had a chance to be washed. Katherine was apprehensive of giving them their black uniforms back once she’d gotten her hands on them, but allowed them to wear it occasionally, too. And they still do wear their uniforms, but they also kinda know when it’s time to put on a fresh set of clothes that are... okay. Not perfect, but good enough. With good textures.

Bedsheets. Some work better than others. Katherine learned when she realized that at times, the two seemed more energized and awake than other times. She wondered what made them restless those specific nights, until Gem off-handedly mentioned the ‘blankets didn’t agree with her’ and Katherine figured that the whole texture problem probably also extended to bedsheets and the like. It was a small oversight on her part, she should’ve realized, but from that moment on, she made sure the clean bedsheets and blankets had the right textures. A small change that made a world of difference.

Food. When it’s mashed, it’s a no-go for Sausage. It doesn’t feel right. He can have soup, he can have a steak, so long as it’s not mashed, it’s good. Not that he’ll eat everything, but he has an easier time learning to eat new things and accepting them into his diet when it’s not mashed. For Gem, it’s the texture of mushrooms. That’s been a problem since before they got to the Overworld, but she never mentioned it because, you know, she’s a soldier, what kind of soldier is appalled at the thought of chewing on mushrooms? It’s stupid, it’s weird, until she mentioned it and Katherine said that more people experienced that. Not everyone likes the texture of mushrooms. It made a lot of sense. Katherine took note of their dietary situation and what they loathed and changed up the meal plan accordingly.

Funny you bring up smell. I don't have it, either. If I ever had it... we'll never know, I must’ve been too small to remember. So now we're in a pickle, aren't we? My autistic brain is glad to have one less sense to worry about, but I do wonder what it's like to smell so many different things.

Tangent aside, let’s attempt to answer this question. So, smells. (this is gonna be interesting) The Nether had a very distinctive smell, almost… burned. Not a lot of variation, but enough to distinguish between hoglin shit and burned meat. Almost all of them hot, in a way, piercing their nostrils. They got used to it. And then they go to the Overworld and it’s just… not hot. They almost don’t know what’s happening to them. It doesn’t smell ‘hot’ and ‘burned’ anymore, but… almost ‘fresh’, ‘cooler’, layered, with so many variations, even dependent on different biomes. Shit and burned meat still smelled the same, but there was so much more going on now. It didn’t feel like an attack on their nostrils, either, as there were softer and harder smells that weren’t as penetrating. It took them a while to get used to, when they acknowledged it was different and weird. Sausage had thought it was an attempt of the Overworld to control minds – who could even think straight when there were so many smells coming your way, distracting you every step of the way?

But no, that’s just the way smell works in the Overworld. They never really paid too much attention to it (best to push it out of their minds and focus on what’s really important) until they were at Katherine’s. Who has a lot of flowers and therefore, a lot of surprisingly nice scents. What with the textures, she figured their sense of smell was probably ruined by their time in the Nether as well. And she and Pearl and Rick taught them about smells (as they taught them about different textures as well) and used the flowers as a baseline to start with.

(if you read this and can actually smell, which is probably the case, I hope this was halfway decent explanation because I am clueless)

The first time taking a bath was certainly strange. The idea of going into the water was already quite the challenge; apparently Sausage stood there for a minimum of thirty minutes before Rick managed to coax him in it after showing it was perfectly safe – he did need a dry set of clothes afterwards, but it worked. And then with the washcloth scraping over their skin. They started gently, to get used to this hateful texture, and after a while they did notice the bathwater muddled – a sign they were becoming cleaner. And they’d smell fresh afterwards; Sausage and Gem looked at each other weirdly when they were reunited, because the other didn’t smell like they were used to. This was another thing they’d had to get used to over time. They have yet to admit out loud these smells and sensations were nicer than the Nether’s.

And you are absolutely right, that doesn’t make sense without context and I’m not even sure I want to know the context of this one. Looking forward to reading the next ask!

I Wanna Be More Like Me

Rage doesn't feel quite like himself.

A soft wind blows by Schlatt as he walks, the breeze reflects the familiar giggle of a certain god he happens to be looking for. He's walking through a flower forest, pointedly avoiding stepping on the colorful things, however much his impulse says to crush them underfoot. The trees tend to grow tall and sparse the further he walks, an accommodation Life made for his winged best friend.

Schlatt slows to a stop, spotting Life splayed on his stomach beneath one of the twisted oaks. Life is staring at his hands that are collapsed together tightly, smiling wide. A twinge of nervousness tugs at Schlatt as looks over the other god. He clears his throat then calls for Life. “Uh, hey kid.”

Life looks over his shoulder, lighting up at the sight of Schlatt. “Oh hi!” He quickly looks down at his hands then back up to Schlatt. “Do you wanna see what I’m making?” He asks as he carefully moves to sit up with his legs crossed.

Schlatt sighs then shrugs, walking over to sit with him. “Why not?” He settles down next to Life who scoots a little closer to him, causing their shoulders to brush together.

“Look.” He whispers as he opens his hands slowly, revealing a tiny bug in his palm. It’s incredibly small, a fuzzy body colored black and yellow crawls across Life's hand, shiny translucent wings flitting on its back.

Schlatt laughs softly, putting a gentle hand underneath Life’s to hold it as well. “It’s tubby.” He mutters, a good-natured smile on his lips.

“Hey!” Life shouts indignantly, offended on his creation’s behalf. “I’ll have you know they're adorable.”

Schlatt snickers and bumps his shoulder against Life’s. “Never said they weren't cute.” He gazes at the small bug for a moment longer, noticing a detail Life had forgotten about. “Kid, you forgot something, it’s got nothing to defend itself with.”

Life looks down, surprised, and examines his creation for a moment. “Damn… you're right, how should it defend itself?”

Schlatt trills his lips, looking up in thought, then gets an idea. He meets Life’s gaze, smirking. “Give it a spike on its butt.”

Life snorts a laugh, quickly falling into hysterics at the suggestion. Schlatt watches him gleefully, a grin stretching ear to ear. Life forces himself to take a breath, for the sake of the little bug in his hands. “Yeah,” He says shakily, “that’ll work.” He wheezes softly, biting back another bout of laughter. He gently boops the bug, and a small, dark spike appears on its butt, just as Schlatt wanted it.

“There!” Schlatt says, grinning wide. “Now it’s perfect.”

Life hums in agreement, eyes sparkling. “Now for the fun part.” He mutters excitedly. Life closes his hands around the bug then brings his hands up to press his lips against his thumbs. He closes his eyes, taking a deep breath, and releases it after a long moment. Life opens his eyes and his hands, showing empty palms.

A buzzing sounds in Schlatt’s right ear, he turns to find two of the little bugs buzzing around his head. They fly off once he looks at them, and Schlatt finds dozens strewn about the forest, landing on all the colorful flowers around them.

He laughs softly, looking back to Life. “How come you made them?” Schlatt asks, smiling.

“You see, I’ve come up with this theory called pollination.” Life tells him, eyes focused on the bugs flying around them. “The flowers have this yellow stuff in them that helps them regrow and stay alive, and to keep the flowers alive, that yellow stuff needs to be spread around.”

Life holds his hand out for one of the bugs, smiling as it lands in his palm. “For the pollination to work, it needs pollinators, and these bugs are gonna be one of them.” He says, watching it fly off again. “I’m gonna make some more later, the pollinators, I’ve been thinking of these things called ‘butterflies’.”

Schlatt nods along, catching the small grin on Life’s lips. He looks around again, feeling as though the forest is more alive. “Have you named them yet?” He asks absentmindedly, catching one resting on his knee.

“I haven't, actually.” Life tells him with a chuckle. “These little guys were kind of an off-the-cuff thing, same as those Platypus that Tommy and I made a few weeks ago.”

Schlatt shudders, the action drawing an evil laugh from Life. “The story of how you made those things is utterly horrifying.”

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with them.” Life says confidently, though his eyes glint with mischievously.

Schlatt knocks his shoulder into Life’s, catching his eye. “What are you gonna name them though?”

He sighs, leaning his chin on a hand. “Their names should be…” He trails off, wracking his brain, before shooting up with realization. “Bee! That’s what their names are.”

Schlatt snickers at the bright look on Life’s face then nods at the name. “It’s very fitting, kid.”

They settle into silence, Life feeling comfortable and content, Schlatt feeling happy yet nervous. The reason why he came out to Life’s forest burns a freezing hole in his stomach. For as soothing as the sounds of the forest are, how warm the dappled sunlight feels on his skin, for as soft as the grass feels between his fingers, it’s not enough to erase his nervousness. The anxiety he knows is illogical in the face of the ray of sunshine sitting next to him, yet he can't help but worry, cause that’s what he’s used to doing.

Schlatt wrings his hands together, glancing to the side nervously before clearing his voice after a heavy sigh. “Um, I came here to ask you something.”

Life nods his head, gazing at the bees around them happily. “What is it?”

“You know how you gave yourself horns?” He asks hesitantly.

Life looks to Schlatt and nods, reaching up to run his fingers over the ridges curled around his head. “Yeah, what about ‘em?”

Schlatt takes a steadying breath, “I- do you think… I could have a set?”

Life stares at him before lighting up with a gasp. “Of course!” He shuffles to sit in front of Schlatt, presenting both of his hands to him. “I can also give you the ears I have, do you want that too?”

Schlatt smiles with a nod, Life reflects the joyful look. He settles onto his knees, keeping his hands up. “Okay, I’m gonna put my hands on your head, is that okay?”

“Yeah, that's fine.” He responds as Life gently presses his hands on the top of his head.

Schlatt watches Life close his eyes and take a breath. Schlatt feels a weight start to settle on either side of his head as Life pulls his hands away, going slow, breathing even, being careful. He feels his ears start to change, his sense of feeling slipping further to the tips of fuzzy ears the same color as his hair dropping down to his chin. The tips of horns come into Schlatt’s field of view as Life’s hands stop in front of his face. Life opens his eyes, looking over Schlatt with a wide grin.

“They look really good on you!” He exclaims, leaning left and right to properly look over him.

Schlatt brings his hands to trace over his horn, fingers running over the ridges delicately before rubbing knuckles against soft fur. He chuckles a bright grin on his face, feeling ears flick up with excitement. “What kind of horns did you give me?”

“The same kind as mine,” Life says quickly, “I gave you ram horns, though they’re a lot bigger than mine.”

Schlatt continues to feel both horns and ears, a small feeling of amazement blooming in his chest towards Life. "Can I see them?"

Life quickly nods and summons a mirror portal between his hands. Schlatt peers into the mirror and exhales sharply.

Life gives him a concerned look. "Do you not like them?" He asks tentatively.

Schlatt shakes his head rapidly, pushing against the tears pricking at his eyes. "No, no, it's not that kid," he clears his throat, blinking rapidly, "I just really, really like them."

Life's expression softens. "I think you look more like you." He says gently.

Schlatt gazes at himself for a few moments more, enjoying the rough texture rubbing against his fingers and the softness of velvet. Life looks on fondly as a passing thought crosses his mind.

“Hey, Schlatt…” Tubbo starts, watching Schlatt’s eyes flick up to his, “what was the word you called the bees when you called them big?”

“I called them tubby,” Schlatt answers, raising an eyebrow. “Why? What’s going on up there?”

He hums, looking to his hands, thinking the word over in his head. “I like how it sounds… it sounds like it would make a good name.” Life says thoughtfully, watching Schlatt’s eyebrows shoot up. “Tubbo would sound better though.” He says with an air of finality.

Schlatt’s jaw drops before he splutters to respond. “Is that your name?” He asks incredulously. “Did you finally decide on a name?”

Tubbo giggles, looking to the side for a moment before looking back to Schlatt. “Yeah, I like Tubbo.”

Schlatt scrambles to his feet and grabs Tubbo’s hand, dragging him to his feet. “We're going and telling the other gods!” Schlatt announces to him, starting into a run.

Tubbo laughs and tightens his grip in Schlatt’s, sprinting through the flower forest with him.

gordons always been neurotic as shit and had high anxiety, but dealing with a shitty ex and raising joshua by himself really kicked it into high gear right before the whole. resonance cascade thing.

knows he tends to get aggressive when he’s afraid or panicked but has just gone absolutely off the rails after black mesa because hes sick of the varying bullshit thats been going on just. in general. he can have a little ultraviolent crime. as a treat.

ended up becoming friends with chell as a kid, since they were both in the deaf community, lived in the same area, and had a huge interest in science. 

black mesa actually has really good work culture when it comes to lgbtq+ folk and suspiciously good benefits, and aperture science is just happy to have more warm bodies to throw at portals- gordon heard some of the rumors about cave johnsons weird ass tests though, so he elected to go with black mesa. now hes starting to wonder if cave johnson just ran both, because what the fuck 

somehow he keeps ending up with more and more of the science team living with him whereever hes staying, even after he moves to a bigger place for joshua. eventually they just. buy a house specifically to live together. theres an entire seperate house connected by a path thats just for joshua because gordon is paranoid someone will leave out something dangerous

So this actually starts with, Dee not Remy

And what you need to know is that it’s been a real bad sensory day for Dee

Bad enough that he can’t stand textures at all and everything's to much

So he stays home from school

And Virgil goes to school, and his moms go to work

So he’s home alone

And Dee does have Virgil use his phone to text Remy for the homework before Virgil leaves for school since they share a lot of classes

(And is pretty much the only person Dee feels comfortable asking anyways)

So Remy being the awesome fantastic amazing magnificent A-Class bffff (best fucking friend forever) that he he is 

Goes to all Dee’s classes and picks up the homework.

(Again- Remy’s a nice guy. He’s uneducated, but he’s learning. And he’s a good friend)

And he’s nice enough that he brings Dee’s hw to his house

So after school he shows up at dee’s house and finds the family’s hide-a-key and lets himself in.

And he’s met with an empty house because Dee??? Isn’t anywhere??? 

So he heads upstairs and checks out Dee’s room to find it is Dee-less

He checks Virgil’s room but still no Dee so he heads to the sensory room which he knows about but has only really been in once or twice 

(He’s kinda been avoiding it tbh? He subconsciously avoids the Sensory Room

b/c for him in a way it kind of solidifies his bff's autism

And Remy’s seen the room before

He thinks it’s pretty childish but he’d never say that out loud to Dee or Virgil

And by proxy makes them see more childish and this childishness bugs remy for some reason

Probably because of the societal expectations of autistic people

So he opens the door and greets Dee in his normal kind of loud volume 

“Hey Babes what’s up?”

And Dee is there

Which a good sign

But remy doesn’t know how to describe what’s going on better than “Dee looks like shit and is freaking out”

Bc Dee’s rocking back and forth and making these miserable noises and covering his head and is also butt ass naked

So Remy’s thrown off completely bc what is happening but he’s also very worried abt his friend

Remy takes a minute, but does quickly come to the realization that nothing is physically wrong with Dee, he’s just incredibly overwhelmed

(And he thinks there’s a word for that? Dee and Virgil have mentioned something? But Remy can’t remember Shit so…)

But Remy does remember that they said being overwhelmed sucks

And that stim toys help

And well, remy doesn't want his best friend to suffer

So he grabs a stim toy from one of the baskets of stim toys in the room as well as a pair of noise cancelling headphones because he also remembers the twins saying those helped

And remy averts his eyes while handing Dee the headphones (which dee takes) and the stim toy(which dee doesn’t take)

Now this is weird 

Because Remy remembers them specifically saying the stim toys helped but??? Dee???? Isn’t taking it??? 

And now Remy’s Concerned because why isn’t dee supposed to take the thing that’s gonna help him

Remy runs his hands over the different textures on the stim toy and-

And that's when he realizes how much texture it has

And remy doesn’t quite get it- but he’s learning that there’s a lot of textures Dee can’t handle

And that’s when it clicks for him, Remy scooches across the room back over to the boxes and takes off his sunglasses in the low lit room 

And he notices one of the boxes of stim toys is purple and the other is yellow

And the toy he grabbed was from the purple box, so remy puts it back and goes over to the yellow box

Where all the stim toys have a lot less texture

And he grabs a small cube that clicks and has a bunch of different sides but no main Textures

And so he goes back to Dee and offers up this weird cube thing

And Dee takes it!!

And remy counts this as success and just sits there in the dark room with Dee for a while

Dee still isn’t talking and hasn’t acknowledged Remy, but he doesn’t seem nearly as distressed anymore which Remy considers a good sign

Eventually though, Remy has to leave

So he says a quiet bye and gets up

And as he going down the stairs, he nearly runs into Virgil

Virgil: “Is he upstairs?”

Remy: “Yeah.”

Virgil: “How’s he doing?”

Remy: “Mostly fine now, he’s not wearing clothes-”

Virgil: “Yeah, on days like this clothes are impossible for him. The texture is bad”

Remy: “Oh. Well that sucks.”

Virgil: “Yeah it does. Um thanks by the way.”

Remy: “thanks for what?”

Virgil: “Staying with him and helping him calm down. You could’ve just left after dropping off his homework.”

Remy: “Well I mean it was kind of my fault he started freaking out again in the first place-”

Virgil: “That’s not important what matters is that you stayed with him and tried to help him calm down-”

Remy: “well yea but I gave him the wrong stim toy one with lots of textures-”

Virgil: “Again you still stayed and helped him, and honestly, that’s not something I thought you’d be willing to do. Look, what i'm trying to say is you did really good. You’re a good friend to Dee. You’ve more than proved that.” 

Remy: “Uh yeah no problem. Shoot my mom just texted me, I gotta go but I’ll see you around?”

Virgil: “yeah, sure. See ya.”

Bonus:

Later Dee texts Remy in a panic and apologizes for having a meltdown and for “stripping”

Remy just tests back “np” and also sends a vine

So yeah, Remy’s making progress. He’s relearning behavior

Because he’s Dee’s friend. And he isn’t going to lose that.
