#i'll have enough of that yarn for a sweater
Text
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve not been knitting for the past month due to a mixture of factors. But I have had some off and on work on several projects. Featured here are a kite shawl, an unblocked lace doily knit in worsted weight cotton, the most evil baby blanket i’ve ever had the displeasure of creating with my own hands, and yarn for a future sweater.

okay. I got the fish sweater pattern and I genuinely do not see any difficulties in just crocheting it, bc the pattern is all graphs and a graph is a graph. I may be famous last wordsing it BUT I think it will work

My sweater plans for the nearest future are
The Sock Yarns Abomination One
The Bright Bright Green (where I need to see if the same yarn in what I'm gonna call the Yelling Pink is available, because the idea of all ribbing in a contrasting colour is oh so tempting)
The Neon One. Yellow with green ribbing. Maybe also green transitioning into yellow on the sleeves through colourwork, but I need to ask myself if I actually have the energy for that
Extremely Thick Bright Cardigan. Cyan+magenta stripes. 10mm needles. Need I say more?..
And YES most of them worked in good ole stockinette. I'm not ambitious with my Relaxed Time Knits. Also if my knits don't require me to look at a pattern, it's so so much more definite that I WILL knit them more. Like there's this lovely sweater WIP I got lying by my side, but... What am I more likely to grab for 10 minutes of knitting while waiting for Dungeon Queues in FFXIV: the loveliest sweater that has an expansive cabled pattern in the middle, or my dearly beloathed shrug on 2.5mm needles that has an EXTREMELY memorable pattern and is bound to get faster when I get to 2x2 ribbing in 20 rows??

Tulips & Moony
Pairing: Remus Lupin x Fem! Reader CW: Sirius and Remus' banter and language (around 700 words) Summary: Remus tries to crochet you a tulip. Note: Hi darlings! I hope you like this mini fic; I love to crochet so why not make a fic out of it, right? Also, my uni's third term is about to end so I'll have more time to finish my WIPs! Hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
Remus loves knitted things— he considers the “unfashionable” grandpa sweaters that Sirius always complains about to be his prized possessions, not forgetting to mention how he’s got every neutral and earthy tones of cardigans arranged neatly in his trunk.
Yes, Remus is an avid fan of those things, but he doesn't really express any interest in making them from scratch.
So, imagine Sirius' surprise walking in on Remus who’s red in the face as he fumbles with a ball of yarn.
“Now Moony, when did you suddenly become a grandma?” Sirius asked, raising an eyebrow at the poor bloke who’s struggling looping a yarn.
“Since he learned Y/n loves to crochet.” James quipped from his bed, eating a chocolate frog that he most likely stole from Remus’ stash who was too busy to notice.
“He’s been at it for a good hm… three hours or so?” Peter shrugs, working on his charms essay in the corner of the room and trying to block out the strings of curses Remus grumbles out every now and then.
“Can you all be quiet? I’m trying to concentrate, you sods.” The werewolf grumbled, furrowing his brows and sticking his tongue out the side of his mouth in concentration. The sight was quite amusing. James lets out a laugh, getting off his bed. “Alright then, I’m getting quite tired watching you fail miserably,” Remus grunted, “Yeah, go bother someone else.”
Sirius plopped next to Remus, looking closely at his creation. “That’s a nice square you got there, Moony.” He hummed, nodding in approval at the wonky shape.
“It’s a bloody circle, you git.”
Sirius didn’t even try to stifle his laugh, “What are you trying to make anyway?”
“A tulip.”
“Doesn’t look like one though.”
“Thanks Pads, really. You’re such a great friend.” Remus rolled his eyes, sarcasm dripping from his tone as he repeats a certain stitch a couple of times. “Geez Moony, that’s alright now.”
“No, it’s not, the stitch looks weird and much looser than the others,” Remus complained.
Sirius raised an eyebrow, “You call that a stitch? Doesn’t look like it.”
"Yeah, the next time you'll see Poppy is because of the stitches you're gonna get because of me-"
Safe to say they both were kicked out to the common room by a very annoyed Wormtail.
It took about a week full of wonky, weirdly shaped tulips, and sleepless nights for Remus to successfully make a single red tulip.
Remus gripped the wrapped tulip tightly, the familiar feeling of nervousness eating up his system seeing you with your friend hanging out in the corner of the common room. He was pulled out of his thoughts by James showing him lightly.
“Look, now’s your chance, Moony.”
Sure enough, your friend left you on one of the couches to go Godric knows where, Remus didn’t really care that much if he’s honest. He even silently thanked your friend as his feet lead him to where you’re sitting. “Oh, Remus!” You looked up to see his tall frame, standing quickly as you could and offering him a smile. “Hi.” He grinned nervously before stretching his arm out that’s holding the crocheted Tulip to you, albeit a bit awkwardly but you on the other hand, find it endearing. “Erm… Is it for me?” You asked, chuckling nervously. “Ah, yeah! I made it, I heard you like to crochet so…” He trails off, scratching the back of his neck as blush dusted his cheeks. He saw how your eyes lit up, and your smile widening as you gently took it from his hand. “Woah…” You let out a soft gasp, examining the flower carefully. “Since when did you learn how to crochet?” “Just last week,” “Just last week?! Remus, you are gifted. I couldn’t even make something remotely similar when I was a month in crocheting.” You told him, hugging it close to your cheeks. “Thank you, Remus.” You smiled shyly, going on your tippy toes to place a kiss on his cheek before waving shyly to him and heading off to girls’ dormitory, leaving Remus who was still trying to process what just happened.
“Another one? I’ve already told you leather is much better!” Sirius threw his hands up in the air, entering their room to see Remus smiling to himself as he wore the cardigan you crocheted for him. “I wouldn’t say that if I were you, Pads.” Peter looked up from his and James’ game of exploding snap. “Why? It’s not fashionable!” “It’s made by Y/N, you wanker. Now shut your mouth before I hex you out of this room.”

Reader who crochets? And she makes these special sweaters with the left sleeve cut out for Sev’s arm?? Omg
-🥨
ANON did u see logan @sevikasenby 's crochet tapestry of our wife!?!?? THE TALENT IS BEYOND
men and minors dni
there's a superstition in the knitting/crocheting community called 'the sweater curse.' the idea is basically that when you hand make a prospective romantic partner a sweater, you doom the relationship to fail.
you've read countless horror stories on crocheting forums about relationships going up in flames once a sweater is gifted.
'she called the sweater ugly after i spent a month on it.'
'he thought a hand-made sweater was too intimate and i was moving too fast.'
'they left with no explanation the same day i bought the yarn for their sweater.'
you've seen it all.
you know that the curse is something to fear. and you really don't want to lose sevika. but she's stubborn.
sevika thinks the fact that you crochet is so. fucking. cool.
most people think it's a grandma hobby.
sevika thinks it's the most impressive thing in the world. you can make anything. she's watched you knit blankets, sweaters, tops and socks. little stuffies for the neighbor kid next door, hats for your friends' birthdays. mug cozies, coasters, pillow cases and dog clothes-- she's seen you make it all.
and she's dying to have you make her something.
"don't you love me?" sevika whines one night as she cuddles in bed beside you while you crochet a scarf.
"can't stand you, actually." you grunt, already knowing what she's about to bother you about. she huffs.
"you don't understand baby. i was sooo cold at work today-- freezing, really-- and it's not like i can go buy a sweater 'cause of my ar--"
"you're so fucking annoying." you groan. sevika chuckles.
"is it so bad to want to show off my baby's work?" she asks. you huff, shaking your head.
"it is when it means we'll break up!"
she wears you down over time.
you start crocheting her little things, wanting her to feel loved but not wanting to subject the two of you to the curse.
you crochet her a little keychain charm on your anniversary; a hat for winter solstice. in the spring, you make her a few new scrunchies for her half-ponytails.
for her birthday, you give her the first big crochet project you've made for her: a purple poncho in a thick, warm yarn, perfect for the colder windy days when her thin red poncho isn't enough.
she cries when you show it to her. (she nearly gets heat stroke a week later when she tries to wear her new winter poncho on a blazing hot day.)
when you propose to her (kneeling in front of her where she sits on the couch kissing her hands, metal and flesh alike, as you bat your eyelashes at her,) sevika doesn't even let you finish the question before she's pulling you off the ground and into her lap, kissing you breathless, and pulling away with a sob. "yes!"
"you didn't even let me ask!" you laugh. sevika kisses you again.
"you have to crochet me a sweater now. make it white, i'll wear it to our wedding." she cries.
you don't do that. (though you do crochet the neck tie she wears on your big day.)
you wait until you've been married for a year, until you're settled in married life and comfortable, until sevika's not expecting it anymore.
and then, on the night of your first wedding anniversary, you give sevika her first sweater.
it's the most intricate thing you've ever made. the cable crochet pattern you used was complex and time consuming, but it looks fucking gorgeous. beautiful royal purple-- her favorite color-- her exact measurements, and sleevless on the left side.
sevika wears the sweater everywhere. all the time. whenever she can.
you only planned on making her the one, but her reaction (and the wear and tear the sweater receives from being worn by the scary woman of zaun) inspires you.
you knit her a new sweater, every year, for the rest of your lives.

Mourning Dove notes, batch #1
Tumblr media
So since I am a very visual thinker, whenever I post my ideas (that aren't in-the-moment rants, that is) I like to draw something for it. It's the closest thing I can get to transferring something directly from my brain to yours. Unfortunately, I have a lot of thoughts, which means I have a lot of drawings I want to make to help get my points across. And since it's easier to write my ideas down as they come to me anyway, I'll be posting Mourning Dove stuff in batches, drawing + notes = a batch :)
Speaking of the drawing part, this is actually a redraw of fanart I did for Wayne's Haunted Mansion I drew a while ago, so you can actually use the bear as a size reference! He's bigger than Bearwing now, but to be fair the bears not that big. Danny, at 14, is 5”2 at most, probably closer to 5’0. He's still a small king.
I decided to have him be 14 when he becomes a vigilante because 1. That seems like a reasonable amount of time for him to have recovered mentally and physically enough for him to be able to handle unfamiliar environments and have the training necessary to be cautious and know when and how to step in (at least 4 years of training + his powers make him a tiny terror).
2. Yo Danny Phantom he was just 14
This batch is going to be dedicated to why Danny is this au has autism and ADHD, and how that affects him. The why will come from the original fanfic this au is based on, Wayne’s Haunted Mansion by @tathartiel (which you should definitely read if you enjoy dp x dc!). How it affects him will mostly be part of the au. Ok? Ok. I tend to ramble a bit but I tried to make it easy to follow.
First of all, Danny enjoys knitting! He's already sewing, it's only the natural progression for him to find out about knitting, and the family would definitely try to encourage the hobby with less sharp tools. It gives him something to do with his hands, and at the end of the day he has something he made all by himself, something he can be proud of. He loves making stuff for people he cares about, he likes knowing he can do something to keep his loved ones warm, whether by making a blanket, scarf, sweater- you name it. He's definitely not great at first, but he does practice a lot. Whenever he's nervous or fidgety, it's nice to do something with his hands.
One of his favorite parts of knitting is the yarn itself. Specifically the texture and feel of certain yarns. The Waynes are rich so they have no problem supplying him with extremely soft yarns to make the softest sweaters and blankets. And you know how he loves pillows? Well I'd imagine that he’d also love the extremely thick, pillowy yarn. He uses it to make a huge blanket that enhances his pillow nest 10 fold. The day he got a giant roll of thick fluffy yarn he spent all day making a giant fluffy blanket out of it, and the following night shoving it in the birds and bats faces so they can experience the bliss that is the feeling of his new soft, pillowy creation.
Tumblr media
Speaking of textures, Danny loves hoodies, especially his Batman hoodie(s). Not only so that he can physically show his appreciation for his family, but that they are warm and soft on the inside, and make him feel secure. His siblings have all gotten him their merch at one point or another, but it wasn't until Jason got him Red Hood merch in the form of a leather jacket did they realize that texture could be a problem. The inside was just not working for Danny, but he was happy to have merch so he tried to ignore it to make Jason happy. It lasted until dinner that night, Danny had a breakdown because the uncomfortable feel of the jacket was agitating him and suddenly the klinks of silverware on plates was to loud, the scrapes and stabs of forks hitting the plates felt like he was physically being hit on the head, and the vibration of the table when someone moved felt like pins and needles going through his arms that were resting on the table. It all became too much for him and he excused himself from the table with a wobbly chirp before promptly disappearing.
It wasn't until later that night, before Jason left, that he reappeared in front of him, tears in his eyes, and handed back the jacket with a guilty chirp. It took Jason some prodding to get Danny to explain why he was handing it back, and then when he finally understood it took a lot more convincing to get Danny to understand it's ok to not like the jacket, no i'm not mad at you, its ok. After he got Danny to calm down he left the manor and informed the rest of the group chat of the new development… and then got Danny another, comfier Red Hood jacket. Bruce, having autism himself (i'm not even sure if that's a headcanon or canon at this point), helps Danny in making sure he knows its ok to feel that way about certain textures and asks what textures he likes and doesn't like, even writes them down so when buying something online or getting something tailored, they can make sure it won't be uncomfortable. His siblings 100% take advantage of this list and start a sort of unspoken competition of who can buy Danny his favorite piece of merch.
Speaking of merch, he has a hoodie of every single Gotham vigilante and wears one almost 24/7. The media was given the vague explanation that Batman saved him from a physically abusive household at 10 (or whatever his age ends up actually being, they don't reveal his existence to the world until he's 12, where by that point he can change back into his human form comfortably. I'm making the assumption he eventually can for the au cus I don’t know everything) so they just assume it's hero worship from that. His siblings however know that it's because he loves them and thinks they're the coolest people ever. Everyone thinks he's adorable anyway. When he first saw Mourning Dove merch he was super excited, until he realized it would be too uncomfortable to wear. Later that week when Bruce gives him a tailor made Dove hoodie, he cried. (Bruce totally won the competition for it, the kids are just a little bitter about it)
Merch was made for him because Gotham does know Mourning Dove exists, mostly from eye witness accounts of the baddies he took down, but also from the literal one blurry video of him that exists. It shows Dove holding onto Batman's cape as Red Robin talks. This was taken on his first official patrol, so he was a little nervous. At first Gotham was mad at Batman for bringing yet another child into the fold, until all the criminals Dove brought in came back terrified. They realized they really should have learned their lesson from the latest Robin, and now just respect their funky shadow child.
However Dove doesn't actually come out all that often. He started his vigilante career because he got wrapped up in the supernatural side of Gotham, at first it was just helping the occasional stray ghost find their haunt, but you know how dangerous magic and the supernatural world can get in just the blink of an eye. Think Jujutsu Kaisen, he was able to see Gotham spirits causing and feeding off of citizens misery, and he just can't not help. When the Batfam realizes what he's doing, he's fully committed to helping the spirit of Gotham deal with her curse. They know there's nothing they can do to stop him, so they do the next best thing and give him armor, a mask and a weapon. They also up his training, which they had been doing before because… it's Gotham. So Mourning Dove doesn't actually come out as often as the others, just either when they're down on members, there's an emergency and need his powers, they want to teach him something, or when he just asks.
… Anyway, back on topic. Another way his autism affects him is making him mostly nonverbal/selectively mute. I'm making the assumption that they eventually do get his voice back, but at that point he can adequately communicate without his voice, using chirps and gestures. He knows now that if he needs to talk (talking to a stranger, needing to explain something more complicated, etc) he usually can. Usually. If he's stressed or uncomfortable in any way, he often finds that he can't talk. Thankfully he's been learning sign language for a few years now and can get across simple ideas and feelings just fine in a pinch. And sometimes, he doesn't even feel bad. And yet still, he can't find it in himself to speak. In those cases, if he needs to explain something complicated, he can write it down. He's gotten a lot better! And if he ever trips up, he can always look it up or use autocorrect if it's over text.
Another thing his trama definitely made a lot worse is that he has episodes of hypersensitivity. An analogy I once heard is that most minds are like doors, and most people can choose to shut the door on small pieces of information that are deemed unnecessary. Like the ticking of a clock, or the scratching of pencils around a classroom. But people with adhd can’t choose to closes those doors, and the flood of information can easily overstimulate us. With his super hearing this definitely becomes a problem, and I can only imagine it gets worse when in crowds. I actually already talked about this, with bad textures. Often we can ignore the extra sensory input and go on with our day, but when faced with something that agitates us, it opens the floodgates to make everything agitate us. The sounds of dinner don't usually annoy Danny, but with the extra bad sensory input that he just couldn't ignore, it made it so he couldn't ignore other pieces of input like usual, and it became too much for him. I usually counteract overstimulation by wearing headphones or earbuds, and while I know Danny definitely has noise canceling devices made for the supers with him 24/7 just in case, I think he deals with it, again, by controlling the texture of the cloths he’s wearing and using it to fidget. He counteracts the negative input by surrounding himself with positive input. If he's not in public or that doesnt work, he’ll curl up into himself and rock back and forth, countering the input with a soothing motion and clenching onto his skin like a stress ball. Of course, that's if Cujo, his service dog, isn't there to help him through it.
One thing that carries over into the future is his short attention span. curse you ADHD! He has trouble sitting still and concentrating on a task that doesn't interest him. However he still LOVES space, and often hyperfixates on it. He’ll sit in front of the tv or a tablet and watch documentaries for hours without moving an inch. The first time this happened the batfam where scared something was wrong, maybe he's having an episode and can't move? But when they approached him to see if he was alright he started wildly flapping his arms and letting out excited chirps, till he noticed the look on their face and got out his phone. An hour later he sent them a poorly written, excited and long text about his favorite star in the galaxy to the family group chat. Suffice it to say, space is his special interest. Since then they started using it as a way to get him to sit still or to distract him. Often it helps to play a documentary in the background while he does a task that doesn't interest him so he won't get so bored he up and leaves.
Last but not least, he has trouble understanding social cues. This is absolutely not helped by how sheltered he is in the social department. Danny's part ghost, and ghosts don’t really lie. It's just not a thing they do. They are loud and honest with their intentions, no beating around the bush. Danny just doesn't understand why people aren't straightforward as well. Danny is very honest and says exactly what he means. I always find this ironic when reading the actual story, that the one person in the family (minus Alfred) that's good at communicating can't talk. This is something that becomes an issue with Bruce and his habit of not using his words to talk. I'd like to imagine that, in trying to set a good example for his youngest son yet, he’d realize the importance of communication, and how he communicates.
You could argue that a lot of these traits come from his trauma, and you're absolutely right. It definitely contributes to making some of these traits a lot stronger than before in this au as well. However, I don't want to just make it all a trauma response because then it sort of implies something is… wrong with him. That there's something to fix. And I don't want him to be treated like that. There's nothing wrong with him liking hoodies. There's nothing wrong with him not wanting to talk. There's nothing wrong with him loving space so much. Those are just a part of who he is. Everyone has quirks, and those are his. I don't want the batfamily to obsess with fixing him, or try to make him “normal.” I want them to accommodate his needs like they do for everyone else in the family. I want them to accept him, and his flaws, like a normal person. Not look at him like he's broken. After everything, he deserves a family who accepts him, chirps and all.
Tldr of the last paragraph: making everything a trama thing makes people sad and want to help “fix” him instead of treating him like a normal person. I aint having that in my au so even if he wasn't hurt the way he was, he would still act like this. There's nothing wrong with Danny, he just needs to be accommodated for and treated like a normal person.
Bonus: close up and flat colors (idk if you can even see them but I am way more proud of those eyelashes than I have any right to be)

Hank, Sanford and Deimos with a Reader who does Handcrafts
Gonna post my old MadCom stuff since people seem interested in it! I didn't write too much back then, but I'll post it anyway and hope for some MadCom requests as well! What the title says! Reader knits, crochets and embroiders in this! The format is different from how I usually write, but that's because I wrote this months ago, if not in 2022! I don't remember when, but it's been a while since I wrote this!
Hank
If you get his attention while doing one of your crafts, expect him to just stare at you for a while. He knows what knitting is, since you can use those needles to stab someone with enough force, but he never really cared much for any of it. So, seeing you do those small, but precise movements has him somewhat curious. If you beckon him closer to check out what you’re doing, he will approach you, taking your piece from your hands and gently examining it, before returning it to you.
While he won’t join you that often due to his occupation, Hank will lie down next to you from time to time, watching you work until he falls asleep eventually. Doing so next to you, especially when you’re knitting or doing embroidery, takes a lot of trust on his behalf, so it’s a rather rare occurrence, but it might happen. Still, sometimes even Nevada’s most wanted can’t resist getting some sleep in.
If you give him a scarf or anything of the likes it might seem like he doesn’t like it at first. As he only grunts in acknowledgement and doesn’t wear it, it might seem disheartening at first glance. But rest assured, he’s well aware that him wearing it would only get it covered in blood, and he wouldn’t want your creation, that you put so much love into, to get sullied like that. Hank does keep it somewhere hidden where only he can find it so that it won’t get stolen as well, he truly does treasure anything you give him.
Sanford
He has helped his mother crocheting every once in a while when he was young by holding her wool for her. Sanford always thought it to be really cool how you can make something so beautiful out of something as simple as wool and yarn. Much like he did when he was younger, he’ll hold your yarn for you, making it more comfortable to knit or crochet for you. Unlike Hank and Deimos, he will try to learn it as well. It seems relaxing, so why not? But by no means is he a master. Due to his strength, he will likely rip the yarn and wool apart from time to time and come to you for help.
In order to relax and unwind a bit, he’ll likely come to you and ask if you would like to practise your craft for and with him. Having you around in and of itself already makes Sanford happy, but just getting to spend time with you without having to worry about being killed by the enemy makes it all the better. If you let him, he will hold you close, lean into you, put you on his lap, anything you’re comfortable with.
Please give him a sweater. Because he’s never wearing a shirt he gets cold fairly easily. He’ll cherish it dearly and wear it whenever he can, and whenever he knows it won’t get ripped. Another thing he’d be very happy with would be a piece of embroidery. It reminds him of better times and gives him hope, especially when your piece of art is something pleasant and sweet to look at. Because of that, he will put it up somewhere in his room where he can always see it. Even if Deimos makes fun of him for it, he will simply lightly jab at the smoker, all the while smiling at it.
Deimos
He’ll lovingly call you a grandma for having hobbies like these. Even while doing embroidery, where you stab things thousands of times, he will snicker at you whenever he catches you doing any of these things. Though, he doesn’t mind that sort of thing at all since that means you’ll be sitting still for a while, meaning you’ll give him a chance to unwind with him. Deimos will wrap his arms around you, leaning onto you or just cuddle into you in general. No fighting, no getting hurt, just watching you do the same movements over and over again.
Despite possibly calling you boring, he does have great respect for your craft, since he can’t do any of it. It’s too tedious and he can’t sit around for long enough doing something like this. It’s simply not exciting enough. But the moment you give him his first sweater, he will think it’s the most awesome thing to ever exist. Proud as a peacock, he will flaunt and taunt his new piece of clothing, especially to Sanford and Hank, declaring just what a great lover he has.
Present him with a plushie and his mind will be blown. He always thought knitting and crocheting are just for woolly hats and sweaters and scarves and all. If he sees you made him a tiny grunt, he will simply lose it, run around the Status Quo base and show everyone what you’re capable of. It doesn’t even matter to him whether or not it looks good. Your hands are magical to him and absolutely everyone has to know just how cool and epic you are.

Note
please do say some more about your favorite sweater patterns i recently learned how to do cables and boy am i excited for the possibilities that the future holds now
Ooooh! So many possibilities! Cables are so satisfying, especially the patterns that look impossible to follow that really are much simpler than they look.
Okay, so! I got a bit carried away looking through patterns, as I always do, but! Here's a whole bunch of pretty patterns I've either made myself or have had my eye on for ages. I'll start with the sweaters, because that is what you actually asked, and then move to the honourable mentions that aren't actually sweaters.
So for your classic aran sweater, the Moby Sweater Man by PetiteKnits is delightful; it's a dk weight pattern, so it's a little thinner and lighter weight than a true aran sweater, but the cable pattern is fantastic.
The Handsome Chris Pullover by Caryn Shaffer was reverse engineered from the sweater Chris Evans wears in Knives Out, and I'm so glad someone beat me to figuring out this pattern so I didn't have to.
Now, if you're just learning or wrapping your mind around cables, I recommend the Antler by TinCanKnits. (I can never recommend their stuff enough) Their patterns are fantastic, always, and very beginner friendly. There's also a free hat version, so that you can see how you like your yarn with the cable pattern, or see if you like the cable pattern at all before you lock yourself into buying sweater quantities of yarn.
Also by Tin Can Knits, and we're diverging from the classic aran sweater fully by now, but Hush is a really interesting design.
Quick aside to say that the pattern that got me loving cables is the Travelling Cables Handwarmers by Purl Soho, and if you're looking for a sort of one-step-past-beginner pattern, those are fun. They also are a good example of how cables really tighten a garment up, not dissimilar to how ribbing does.
The Seaway Pullover by Ozetta is a really good example of using cabling for texturing, which gives it a really interesting look.
I've been wanting to make the Wool + Honey by Andrea Mowry for ages now... it's not really what you think of when you think cables but look at it...... it's so pretty......
The Field Sweater by Camilla Vad is another one I've been eyeing for ages, same as the Wool + Honey. I just need to make it for someone sweaterworthy someday.
Honourable mentions time because I can't help myself:
The Ranger Cowl by Michael Vloedman is so very perfect for renfaire or DnD vibes.
Glimfeather by Sunidesus Knits is a shawl that I just know is the warmest thing in the world, and one day I will own twenty of them.
All of these are ravelry links purely because that's the database I use primarily, but most of these designers have their own sites as well if you prefer that. I do love ravelry though, and using the filters in the advanced pattern search can be so very useful and also so very tempting due to how many pretty patterns there are.
Best of luck on your cabling journeys!

Been busy enough to justify a full round up for this WIP Wednesday. The TL;DR being that I'm back to being fully lace brained.
Tumblr media
Blanket 10 is NEARLY finished. I've started attaching the last row and just need to finish out this row and then do a border (and give him a good wash, I've owned some of this yarn for years and it smells a little dusty). The nights are starting to get really cold here so I'll be happy to have it done, I just gotta force myself to work on it.
Tumblr media
Doily 14 (Yarn | Pattern) needs to go on a longer needle but other than that is very fun and cute. I've decided to put it down for a bit to work on the next two projects but I expect when they get boring I'll go back to this. This pattern is surprisingly simple for a Neibling as long as you're prepared for the long pattern rows. Absolutely going to have to break out the washi tape to mark off my rows for the second chart, but the first one has been very easy lace knitting.
Tumblr media
Unnamed project aka me fucking around to see if I can freehand this sweater design. I had started with a two row lace ("Honeycomb lace" from A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G Walker) but honestly didn't find it fun to knit. So I transitioned to a favourite of mine (ssk, k2tog, yo twice). It's going a lot faster now tho it looks a little weird. I'm going to knit to the underarm and if it fits, it stays. If it's too small I'll rip all the way back and redo the shaping in this lace pattern instead with longer shoulder saddles. It's unfortunate that I didn't like knitting the honeycomb lace, I really like how it looks, I'll have to try swatching it in different yarns to see if the problem is just that this yarn has zero stretch (100% cotton).
I have decided I will put short sleeves on this tho. I had planned to just add ribbing for the arms but I saw a drop shoulder vest in a similar style and did Not like it, so this just saves me from having to rip back. I also think I'm going to have to leave this cropped, I'm not a big crop top person but with this yarn being cotton, having a full length body along with the sleeves is going to have the neckline very stretched. There may be no helping it regardless but there's no harm in trying. I imagine if this is does become something I wear it'll either be in the dead of summer or layered over a button up/some sort of top anyway, so a crop wouldn't be too uncomfortable.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least is Shawl 14 (Pattern | Yarn). My precious Evenstar is coming along very well, I'm actually on the second to last pattern row before the set up for the border. I know the border is going to be a slog but I'm excited for it regardless, he's huge even all compressed on the needles. My self imposed deadline for him is April, but the border is only 56 repeats. If I can do one every other day I should be right on time, which sounds do-able even tho I know I'll get bored by the halfway point.
I need to keep an eye out for patterns for this yarn, I have a whole second cone plus what'll be left after I finish this shawl. These cones staring at me will probably be the push I need to settle on an Orenburg shawl pattern. (Or possibly a large Neibling, or one of MMario's patterns.)

Upon rereading the pattern, I didn’t need to block the body of the sweater, so I took the opportunity to start the left sleeve.
Tumblr media
Picking up these stitches was hard, and, let's be real, I'm not sure I'm following the pattern quite right here, but it's ok. I was supposed to pick up and knit stitches starting from the underarm, working up the back and down the front. I picked up stitches that way and then knit them going in the other direction. It looks just fine, and I'll do the other sleeve to match.
Making a sleeve on double-pointed needles is an interesting ordeal. I keep worrying that my stitches are too loose, particularly at the shoulder (as I didn't seam the back to the fronts before starting the sleeves; in retrospect, that would have been a good idea). I'm generally very comfortable with knitting in the round this way, so it's gotten easier as the sleeve grows and I can acknowledge that knitting a sleeve this way isn't that different from knitting a hat.
I generally love working with owlet, but I did have the nasty little surprise of pulling the yarn a bit too hard while tightening a stitch and having it break. I was able to undo enough stitches to have a tail for weaving in and rejoin the yarn without too much trouble. I've had this happen three times on the entire sweater, which makes me think that sometimes I'm knitting with too much tension for the yarn.

Woven Together
Tumblr media
(I'm taking request btw, please I need more ideas)
Arcturus x (GN)reader
2nd person
799 words
Summary: Arcturus and you buy yarn together to knit and crochet sweaters for each other.
Tumblr media
Arcturus and you had been assigned by Spica to go downtown to buy desserts for an upcoming banquet. It was from the same bakery as usual so Arcturus already knew what to order. The bakery was a bit busier than usual that day so they couldn’t get the order done as fast as they usually do and told you to come back in an hour to pick up the order. You suggested using that extra time to take a look at the shops downtown.
Arcturus agreed and sent Spica a message notifying him about the delay before leading you out the bakery door. Since he has still yet to show you every part of downtown he led the way and showed you around a few stores. You're both having fun browsing around until you get to one specific store Arcturus wanted to show you. Turns out in the months he hadn’t been to the store it was replaced. A yarn store is what took its place, and while you were both a little disappointed you thought you might as well take a look since you're already out there.
The moment you both walked into the shop with its warm lighting and wooden decor you could feel the coziness radiating. You had both talked about your interests in fiber arts but seeing Arcturus giddy as he starts to browse through the selection certainly confirms it.
He turns to speak to you, “They have so many options, I want to buy something but I don’t think I can decide on what.”
“I’m feeling the same way. Maybe we could try and pick things out to make each other sweaters.”
“Oh, that sounds fun! Alright, I think it will be easier to pick something I think you would like.”
“We should probably be quick about this so we can be on time to pick up the desserts at the bakery. So I’ll need to start choosing right away.”
It had been about 5 minutes before Arcturus finished shopping and joined you by your side again. He’s picked out beautiful soft looking yarns that are in your favorite color combinations.
“Have you picked out your colors yet?”
“Almost! You can go and wait by the cash register and I'll be there in a few minutes”
He nodded and walked off to wait for you. Like you said I didn't take much longer for you to find the right colors and materials.
You go to the front of the shop, and Arcturus is gleefully chatting with the shopkeeper while he waits.
“Mc, are you done?”
“Yeah, I hope you like what I picked,” from the look on his face you could tell he was happy with your choice.
Once the yarn was all chosen and paid you two had just enough time to get back to the bakery and pick up the desserts. During the walk there you talked about fits and styles of sweaters so you both could make something you knew the other would like.
The desserts got picked up and brought to Contell safely. Arcturus looked quite excited to tell you that he'd be free all evening to knit and crochet together, he needed to finish a few more things for the upcoming banquet so you part ways until then.
Later that night, not too long after dinner you get a knock on your door. It was Arcturus, knitting needles and yarn in hand. You both agreed to bring your supplies outside to one of the gardens since the weather was nice.
There were plenty of free benches placed along the garden path so you could sit down and get started. The air is cool and refreshing, Arcturus and you talk about whatever comes to your mind until it gets too dark to see what you're working on. Not much of the sweaters got finished for either of you but you both agreed to work on the projects during your free time and make time to crochet and knit together like this again.
Eventually, after months filled with knitting and crochet dates the sweaters were finished. Even though you both knew pretty much exactly what each sweater looked like, you both decided to present the gifts all wrapped up. Arcturus had his gift in a box wrapped with colorful wrapping paper and a bow, similar to how you wrapped up your gift.
He opened yours first and his smile widened when he saw it. He immediately tossed the sweater on hugging and thanking you before passing his sweater your way.
You do the same as Arcturus and put the sweater on before thanking him. It was cozy, soft, and warmed you up. The contagious joy was radiating off of Arcturus’s face and you both spent the rest of the night chatting.

Me during the months of August-October, every year: I don't feel like knitting anybody any gifts this year
Me in fucking NOVEMBER, every year: aaacccctuallllyyyy
I know this about myself so while it is supposed to get to 90° today and I'm firmly in the "I Don't Fucking Feel Like It" stage, I Know Myself well enough to know I'll change my mind so I gotta think ahead.
I am gonna make my gf a hat out of bulky weight yarn cuz there was a pattern she really liked designed for a yarn I really like (Malabrigo mecha my beloved) and that won't take too long!
I agreed to knit my friend Max a pair of custom dyed socks as my first experiment with "You pay for materials only and make a commitment to repair the item and in exchange for not paying for labor I'll get to it when I get to it."
Because I like making things but at a certain point I don't need more clothes and this way people I care about who don't make clothes themselves can afford things made with ethical labor that are worth repairing and keeping around long term. As my personal fuck you to fast fashion. But I agreed to do this in like. March. And haven't yet and I want to make them before the year is over.
I might make my grandparents something or I might just buy them something they need.
My mom said she'd love something handmade but she'll have to think about what and I told her I probably won't have time for something large like a sweater but smaller things are fair game and bigger sewn things are an option cuz sewing is way faster than knitting.
I haven't made my siblings anything handmade pretty much ever so maybe I should do that? But something small.

My mom is slowly really becoming a hoarder, non-accessible rooms and all. (She hates it but she can't make herself commit to get rid of stuff)
This has shaken me awake a bit so I've spent the last few days cutting down on my hoard of wool & fabric and I've learned 1 thing:
I hate hate hate selling shit. I want it all gone ASAP because otherwise it'll end up back up squirreled away.
I probably could have sold a lot more than what I've done but I'm really glad that tomorrow 3 people are coming to take tge rest of it all for free. It's 6 big shoppers full of yarn. And STILL I have enough left that I couldn't part with yet 🥹
(To use it all I'll have to make 20 sweaters, 3 blankets, a few stuffed animals and a dozen scarfs, to give an indication lmao)

Weavile!Cyrus's reaction to his S/O making little handicrafts with his shed fur? 🥺
cw: fluff, Weavile Cyrus
Cyrus felt confused after he saw you picking up some of his fallen for. Naturally, he tried to keep everything tidy and pick up after himself, but you seemed to notice it faster than him. He would have thought nothing of it had you taken it to the bin to toss it, yet you did not. No, instead, you put it into a basket. It was something he would normally look past, not having the urge to waste precious time and energy on such foolish things. But, he felt curious. Why? His fur was not something he felt was something worthy to be collected.
“What are you doing?” His voice was low and quiet, with the usual tone of complete seriousness. You jumped at his sudden closeness.
“Cyrus!” your voice held a slightly upset tone, “I was collecting some of your fur.” The Weavile hybrid cocked a brow up. That was actually what you were doing. Why? He simply could not understand why you would do such a thing. You let out a sigh. “I know, I know, this seems like it's going into scary hair-collecting obsessive lover, but I'm actually using it to make yarn,” you explained awkwardly, “It's really good at holding in warmth so it's been good for handling the cool weather around the time of year.”
Somehow, you had managed to bewilder him even more. Yarn? You were using it to make things? He felt confused. “… You've made things?” Cyrus finally asked, allowing himself this simply curiosity. You nodded eagerly in reply and walked over to a draw beside the couch to pull out something. He stared at the dark blue gloves in your hands.
“Yep! This is one I finished, but I actually am working on a cap right now, and I'm trying to collect enough for a scarf, too,” you smiled at him. Something odd panged in his heart at the thought of you wearing his fur. He had always despised his status as a hybrid and was simply annoyed by all the set-backs being one had granted him. His fur especially was something that caused immense distaste within him. You, however… You wearing something made from his fur made him feel oddly warm inside.
“… I see,” he nodded. There was no point in stopping you. Hobbies were healthy, after all, and it seemed like a good way to prevent his fur from being entirely useless. “Are you attempting to subtly ask me to give you my fur sheddings?” Cyrus stared at you.
“Please,” you begged him suddenly, catching one of his hands in between your own, “Your fur is just such a pretty colour, and I love its texture…” He sighed. There was no way he could tell you no when you looked at him with such pleading eyes.
“Do as you will,” Cyrus turned away from you to recover himself, “… I'll leave my shedding around the house to you.”
Your big, warm smile nearly melted him. Unfortunately, the sudden heat consuming his body was probably dangerous for an ice-type.
~
“I'm going to make you a sweater,” you later told him.
“… Wouldn't that be redundant? My fur already covers my body.”
“You shiver.”
“Must you bring that up?”
“Fine, I'll cuddle you constantly instead.”
