My Favorite Books on Nuclear / Radiation Topics
Throughout posting, I have discussed different sources to learn more about my favorite, complicated, topic. But I also love to encourage people to read. I have 31 books surrounding these subjects; some I have read and some I have not. But from this pile, I want to give you guys my top 5.
5. The original IAEA report on Chernobyl: Admittedly, I have not finished this one yet, mainly because I want to give it my full, undivided attention. This 150+ page document cannot be found on the IAEA website, I had to do some digging to actually find it. Essentially, it is the governing body of nuclear sciences buying the Soviet propaganda hook, line, and sinker. If you can find it, give it a once over. But I have no idea where it is ;)
4. Command and Control by Eric Schlosser: Not a quick read by any means. However, I found it interesting. Broken Arrow Incidents are when the United States loses an atomic bomb. It has happened more than once. Talk about an orphan source…
3. Atomic Women by Roseanne Montillo: The role of women within the history of nuclear science cannot be overstated. Starting with Marie Curie, this story recounts the women who worked within studies for radioactive material, as well as the Manhattan Project.
2. Hiroshima by John Hersey: This book is incredible. It is so well-known for a reason. Packed within this small book are some of the most harrowing descriptions of the results of the atomic bomb. I could not put it down.
1. Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham: The pinnacle of literature. I remember laying in bed, reading as Higginbotham recounted the harrowing final minutes before the explosion. It was like I could feel it in my bones. This is definitely in my top 5 books of all time, so it comes as no surprise it is number 1 here. If you take anything from my blog, it should be to read this book.

Heard that these “dirty bomb” things are false is that true?
As of right now, November 3, 2022, I can say yes, it's fake. Multiple news agencies are reporting that the IAEA found nothing at the spots Russia accused Ukraine of having dirty bombs.
Official statement from the IAEA:
"Inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have completed their in-field verification activities at three locations in Ukraine at the request of the Government of Ukraine, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said today.
Ukraine’s written requests for the IAEA to send teams of inspectors were issued after the Russian Federation made allegations about activities at the three locations – the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv, Eastern Mining and Processing Plant in Zhovti Kody, and Production Association Pivdennyi Machine-Building Plant in Dnipro.
Over the past few days, the inspectors were able to carry out all activities that the IAEA had planned to conduct and were given unfettered access to the locations. Based on the evaluation of the results available to date and the information provided by Ukraine, the Agency did not find any indications of undeclared nuclear activities and materials at the locations.
The inspectors also collected environmental samples for analysis at the IAEA’s safeguards laboratories and its network of analytical laboratories. Environmental sampling is a commonly used safeguards measure with ultrasensitive analytical techniques that can provide information about past and current activities related to the handling of nuclear materials.
“Upon the request of the Government of Ukraine, I immediately dispatched inspectors to the three locations to carry out their indispensable technical and independent role in verifying the facts on the ground. Within days, they went there and conducted their safeguards activities, in challenging circumstances during the current conflict in Ukraine,” Director General Grossi said.
“Our technical and scientific evaluation of the results we have so far did not show any sign of undeclared nuclear activities and materials at these three locations. Additionally, we will report on the results of the environmental sampling as soon as possible,” he said.
Director General Grossi stressed that the IAEA remained ready to conduct further such verification activities in Ukraine to verify the absence of undeclared activities and materials and thereby deter any misuse of such materials."

Received in Friday's mail, from Vienna : courtesy of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Division of Nuclear Power, Nuclear Power Engineering Section. IAEA Power Reactor Information System is an invaluable resource. The 2022 poster can be found in PDF format here. Given the widely-reported money troubles at the Agency, we do not know when the print version will be forthcoming.

Did y’all ever end up doing the valoris vienna thing?
We kinda did, not all of us tho. It was a last minute decision we took with @alyeen1 back in April because, at the time, our initial plan for an Easter trip (visiting the HBO Chernobyl filming locations in Lithuania) did not seem like a very safe -or appropriate- option, February the 24th and everything happening since being the reason behind our qualms. Visiting Vienna and the IAEA was the next best thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apart from the IAEA we visited a beautiful old coffee shop, Cafe Landtmann, which was my imaginary meeting point where Boris and Valery would have a very significant for their relationship coffee break during the IAEA press conference in August 1986.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My headcanon? A short break of happiness for Boris and Valery during a very stressful stay in Vienna (where Legasov was answering questions about Chernobyl for hours).
We were looking for any romantic, old-fashioned coffee shop in Vienna, and Cafe Landtmann turned out to be the perfect setting for my fluffy headcanon that was inspired by this pic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways. This Vienna trip is behind us but at least now I know more about the city and places to visit. I know @progressi9 intends to visit the IAEA too, it seems it's not always open to visitors? I don't know when I'll be in Vienna again but Salzburg is in my plans for next summer. So who knows, maybe I could visit Vienna for one day where we could all meet at the IAEA, and then at Landtmann Cafe, take some pictures and have some shippy Valoris conversation, if time and headspace allows it? If anyone is still interested by Easter 2023 or summer 2023, PM me and we'll keep in touch. I love this fandom. Things have changed since 2019, the world is going to hell, but I still love HBO's Chernobyl to bits even if it's a fictional take on events of the past that seems like a bad dream compared to what's happening right now, very very close to us. I may not always be in the mood to share my Valoris headcanons with others and I may not have time for tumblr like I used to, but if your heart's graphite is still burning with radioactive love for Valoris, hit me up in PM and I'm sure we can schedule a meet up somewhere.
I wish you good health and long life, unknown comrade.
And peace.

I don't know what the hell is going on at this IAEA (or UN?) Security Council, which isn't even over yet, as I understand it, and maybe I'll add my comments later if something comes up, but firstly .
If he(as I understand it's the words of Rafael Grossi?) is so concerned about the situation, then how can he say that nothing threatens us right now? Especially with the recently transmitted data, and the fact that the entire ZNPP is mined?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this bullshit, where he (or someone else) talks about two parties, as if it is Ukraine that is shooting at the ZNPP and will not allow anyone to approach it, and he does not even say who is the cause of the whole situation - fucking russians.
Tumblr media
And I don't even want to start, about the way they write and most importantly pronounce (reading from a sheet, it means that it is written wrongly there) the name «Zaporizhzhia»
They(I've seen just one person saying it,so I'm just assuming) pronounce it more like in russian way,and write it in some sick mixture of russian and Ukrainian: Zaporizhzhia (Ukr) and Zaporozhye(ru).
Maybe it just wasn't the right time, but I wonder if they'll fix it.

This is a very important video that is just one example of how russian influence has infiltrated European institutions and is actively obstructs their functioning. I implore you to watch this video with automatic translation - the subtitres are fairly decent. For those who want a short version, I have written down some of the key points.
IAEA is an independent international organization for atomic energy, working under the UN. It was created in 1957 with the purpose of cooperation and control over the peaceful use of nuclear technology. The soviet union used to be a member of IAEA, and russia has inherited its place. They have signed all the international agreements that come with their position and donate yearly contributions to the organization’s budget.
Despite the war in Ukraine, colossal international sanctions and other types of pressure, russia remains a member of IAEA. This organization still hasn’t recognised russia as an initiator of the aggression and is calling the current war “a situation” or “conflict”.
In August 2013, an explosion occurred near russian arkhangelsk. According to the official data, at least 5 people died immediately, and 2 died later due to acute radiation sickness.  Four more people received extremely high doses of radiation. According to the USA intelligence, the explosion happened during the retrieval of a “Burevestnik” cruise missile carrying a nuclear engine from the seabed. A radiation release happened due to an uncontrolled nuclear reaction. Two barges, probably used for the transportation of the missle remains after the incident, were left on the seashore near the Nyonoksa village for several months. The radiation levels in the place were 14 times higher than the acceptable norm. Despite giving reports about accidents like this being a literal purpose of the IAEA, they did not comment at all about this event.
Despite the fact that IAEA is the organization that is supposed to monitor all peaceful usage of nuclear energetics in the world, they can only inspect one nuclear plant out of 37 (!) present in russia. This means that as far as independent observers, we have no idea how  russian nuclear plants work or if they work at all. For all we know, they could be used for military purposes and we wouldn’t have a clue, because IAEA fails to fulfill the duties it was created for. This is because the presence of IAEA monitoring on nuclear plants can only happen under the consent from the country, which russia doesn’t give. It is true that IAEA has virtually no ways to influence russia, but as we’ll see later, they don’t even bother to use those pressure points they have.
On March 9, 2022, after the capture of the Chornobyl NPP by the russians, IAEA lost all contact with the monitoring systems installed at the station. The connection was only restored on the 11th of May. We still do not know what happened on the station during those two months. In April, during the occupation of the nuclear plant, IAEA published very limited data, claiming that radiation levels remain normal. After the deoccupation their mission entered the NPP, confirming the previous report. However, Greenpeace conducted its own research and accused IAEA of reporting false data. The Greenpeace investigative group has discovered that radiation levels in the dislocation of russian military forces was at least three times higher than stated in the IAEA report and corresponds to the level of nuclear waste.
Investigating the Chornobyl catastrophe, IAEA has ignored the report of the Commission of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine that concluded that the reason for the explosion was the construction flaw of the nuclear plant. Instead, IAEA followed the official narrative of the soviet union, blaming the nuclear plant personnel.
Currently, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant remains under russian occupation. They use it as terrorists - to blackmail Ukraine. They interrogate and torture the workers, remove the equipment and launch missles from the territory of the NP. IAEA has made no comment about this.
On May 25th, at the Davos Economic Forum, IAEA general director Rafael Mariano-Grossi stated that Zaporizhzhya NP holds “30 tons of plutonium and 40 tons of enriched uranium, suitable for manufacture of nuclear weapons”. In his statement he repeated word-to-word russian state propaganda, which had previously made the same claim. The Ukrainian side had to debunk this, stating the plutonium and uranium were never stored on the Zaporizhzhya NP. Ex-Minister of Environmental Protection and Nuclear Safety Yury Kostenko explained that the plutonium and uranium present on the plant is the fuel waste that is impossible to use for the manufacturing of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, since 1998 it was IAEA that has been responsible for making sure that Ukraine has no nuclear materials suitable for military use, which has been confirmed since then each year in the IAEA annual report. This means that for Mr Grossi’s statement to be true, that would mean that his organization has failed to fulfill its duty for 24 years. According to Mr Kostenko, the amount of fuel that Grossi claims Ukraine has would have been enough to create 4,000 nuclear missiles.
On March 23th, Grossi called for an urgent IAEA mission on the Ukrainian nuclear plant. The original composition of the group would have had russian citizens and was drafted by Aleksey Likachov (more about him below). On August 30th, the mission of 14 members arrived in Kyiv. No russian members were present, but also no Ukrainians were allowed to participate, as well as Americans and Britains.
In June IAEA had forbidden a representative of Ukraine to attend the conference with a report about the radiation sources in the war zone. However, russian speakers were widely represented, both as speakers and as leaders of the sections.
At least three russian politicians have influence over the decisions in the IAEA. Mikhail Chudakov, a former member of National Bolshevik Party of Russia (founded by Eduard Limonov and Oleksandr Dugin) is the Deputy General Director of IAEA and head of its department of Nuclear Energy since 2015. Before that, he worked at Rosatom - russian state corporation for atomic energy - for 20 years. Rostom takes part in the occupation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant, and at least 11 of its members have been to it. Chudakov has access to sensitive information about the state of Ukrainian nuclear plants. It is impossible to know where this information goes and how it is used. Both Poland and Greenpeace have called for IAEA to fire Chudakov and explain his role in the agency. IAEA did no such thing, and limited itself to condemning the action of russian federation in Ukraine - without naming it as aggressor and doing anything of consequence.
Since January 2018 Mikhail Ulyanov has been a permanent representative of the russian federation at international organizations in Vienna, including IAEA. It was him who tweeted on August 19, “No mercy for ukrainians!”.
Aleksey Likachov is the director of Rosatom. He coordinates with IAEA on behalf of the russian government. On August 24the he met in Istanbul with the director of IAEA, after which released the cynical statement: “We leave the politics out of brackets, and talk only about the cooperation and safety of modern nuclear plants”. In 2018-21 Likachov was the head of the delegation of russian federation at the meetings of the general committee. In March 2022 he confirmed the presence of Rosatom representatives of the occupied Zaporizhzhya NO, and in April Rosatom has additionally sent at least 8 more people who demanded daily reports and confidential data from the Ukrainian workers of the nuclear plant. Another director of Rosatom, Sergey Kiryenko, is the curator of the temporary occupied Ukrainian territories.

Guterres, stop to 'suicide' attacks on nuclear power plants
Guterres, stop to ‘suicide’ attacks on nuclear power plants
The UN secretary general asked, in a press conference in Tokyo, to suspend all “suicidal” military operations at nuclear power plants and in particular around that of Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, so that the International Energy Agency atomica (IAEA) can access it. “Any attack on nuclear power plants is suicidal,” he said. “I hope that these attacks will end. At the same time, I hope that the IAEA will…

Venemaa süüdistab Ukrainat järjekordses militaarrünnakus Zapporižje tuumajaamale
Tuumajaama rünnati droonidega ajal, mil selles viibis Rahvusvahelise Aatomienergia Agentuuri (IAEA) delegatsioon.
Mõned inimesed said rünnaku tagajärjel vigastada.
Venemaa nõuab, et see agentuur avalikustaks, et tuumajaama on korduvalt rünnanud just Ukraina.
Seejuures mingil põhjusel on see tuumajaam, mis on Euroopa suurim, just praegu kriisis - töös on ainult üks tuumajaama elektrienergiaga varustav liin.
Tuumajaam vajab elektrit, et jahutada reaktoreid, mis kuumenevad ka siis, kui tuumajaam ise elektrit ei tooda.
Lääs on Ukraina tuumaterrorismi seni täielikult ignoreerinud.
