I have a very distinct memory of my 11th grade IB history unit on civil rights. Everyone in class was split into groups and had read up on a particular topic and then give a presentation to the class about it. My group of three was assigned the history of the pathologization of homosexuality, the “treatments” used, and then the eventual de-pathologization.

And I remember my one group mate going from “but being gay is sinful” on day one of the project to “there’s literally no justification for the inhumane treatment these people endured they weren’t sick they were just different” on presentation day.

That’s why conservatives are so fucking mad that they teach kids the actual history of oppressed groups, because it might make them idk develop empathy for other human beings or something.

Canadian not American dropping into to say you’ve brought a lot of stuff to my attention, also about the structures behind the problems that create them, or have at least facilitated my own research, and I understand you guys more now (example. Didn’t know what the primaries were. Let down a rabbit whole about your whole election process. It’s so messy i wanted to cry. You don’t have a non partisan equivalent to something like elections Canada. Insert Shrek meme: they don’t even have elections Canada). Like I knew you were going thru it but not really why or how things could even go down that road but (and I’m by NO means saying we are better, just different structurally, government and law and stuff, and not understanding how much was a huge factor) now I understand more so thanks for that and also sorry you’re going thru it. Hope that makes sense. Hang in there!

Glad to hear it! My hope is that even if people aren't American, then can:

Recognize similarities that allow them to parallel the information and analysis to their own political systems so they can engage there.

Understand the American system well enough to recognize what's going on when things about the US pop up with minimal context.

Learn to recognize the patterns of thought and systems that underlie both the way the world works and the way that people think, so they can understand media closer to home, recognizing biases and propaganda for what they are.

first off I just wanted to say i am so so happy to see the excitement for this fic??? like its so crazy to me to see so so so many people hyped for it sbgkhskshgs i hope i deliver something good :") i think it's not gonna be what people expect it to be, it's a combination of factors that I haven't seen anywhere on ao3, so im excited to see reactions lol. im still happy so many of yall wanna read it,, soobbign... cyring....

during the IB months I wrote 6 out of 8 chapters, abt 3k words each? is that a solid amount of words per chapter? no clue tbh. plus I had to rewrite a bunch, oops. I really am Not a fast writer

and so much has been happening irl, ive been hella busy :( honestly i was very much hit with the ao3 author curse lmao

and thus, many delays. but I am currently finishing the last two chapters, and once I finish this one i'll start posting!!

Pro tip for making characters that are compelling and engaging AND have a backstory you can actually do something with: give them a place to grow to and a reason to do that now.

Examples of this in some of my dnd characters:

Kul → growing to be a happy dad again, doing it cause a new crewmate reminded them of their dead child and broke the dam

Anne → growing to be a confident out butch, doing it cause there's reason to believe she might not have a choice about it

Cosmia → growing to be OK with not being their parents expectations, doing it cause they're faced with the reality that they cant

Goop -> growing to be Goop, doing it cause ae will have no other choice

The end goal is inherently tied to the backstory. The backstory can be a however long or short you need it to be to figure out what theme you want the character to explore.

The characters don't have to know where they're going. They might think they have a totally different end goal, or might not have a plan and are just reacting to what's happening, or maybe they know exactly what's going to need to happen, but you the player having a sense of where to take them and what themes to lean into will make a interesting and compelling character in the journey to the end goal, which! In itself is the goal.

Day two back to school:

❌ threw up twice

✅ made five death whistle prototypes, realized I don’t understand how whistles work, spent two hours reading articles in the science of whistles and accidentally spawned another useless hyper focus

✅ went to art history class, got intimidated by large attractive men

❌did not eat enough food, due to the nausea

❌ accidentally traumatized a kid with a nosebleed by having explosive diarrhea (idk what a twelve year old was doing in the university bathroom bleeding all over, at least he couldn’t smell anything? ❌ drank coffee, which I know is a bad idea and helps nothing

✅ made cylinders for my ceramics assignment, very boring but fun to play in dirt

✅ designed an impossibly difficult to construct puzzle box to make in ceramics

✅ drew a penis (not class related)

✅ pretty much instantly dropped out of my evening class (we’re counting that as a win I don’t care)
