It seems poetic in a cruel sort of way that less than a week ago you were walking Etihad Campus and feeling like you were on top of the world━ working a new albeit temporary gig, adding the Manchester City name to your list of clients, having photos of world-renowned footballers in your portfolio━ and now you’ve resigned yourself to hiding away in the women’s restroom, locked in a stall because it’s the only place you could think of where nobody would be able to find you.

You’re on the verge of tears and feeling rather stupid for it.

It’s the third time today alone that your call has gone straight to voicemail, and with the dozens of unread texts you’ve sent in the last week added to the mix, it’s starting to paint a picture you’re not very happy with. Lando is ignoring you. Or he’s blocked you. Or he’s blocked you because he’s ignoring you━

You bite down on your lip, hard, to keep back the sob crawling its way up your throat.

You’re not a PR officer, you hadn’t been lying when you told Garrett that, but you’ve spent enough time around the McLaren PR teams that you’ve picked up enough tips and tricks to know, at the very least, that the best thing you can do is just ignore the comments.

That’s what they tell all the athletes.

What they don’t tell the athletes is that ignoring the comments is much easier said than done, especially when your career requires you to have such a significant online presence. And the thing is, despite all of these strangers hounding you with every name under the sun and criticizing your capabilities, qualifications, and very existence, the thing that hurts the most is the radio silence from the only person you know could make it all better.

Now, more than ever, you need your best friend. But he isn’t here.

You tuck your phone into your jacket pocket and unlock the stall with great reluctance. You know better than to be hiding away, shirking your responsibilities while crying over a few missed phone calls. You have a job to do, and a real professional wouldn’t let something as simple as a handful of tasteless comments get in the way of that.

You should be used to them. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before.

Your first month at McLaren wasn’t entirely different.

When you were first hired on, Carlos had been in Formula One for a handful of years already and had built up a devotedly loyal fanbase with a decently large percentage of possessive fangirls who had come for your head the moment your existence had been announced.

The McLaren Instagram account had posted a picture of you standing between their two grinning drivers, your camera strung around your neck, with a very nice caption welcoming you to the team, and despite no indication that you were by any means involved with either of them in a way that went beyond professional, the comments had been taken over by feral teenage girls who saw the act of you simply standing near Carlos to be a direct threat against their “chances.”

Though it had been frustrating being met with childish threats and petty insults in your comments, you hadn’t really held it against any of them. You remember being a teenage girl and crushing on a celebrity. Deep down you knew you never had a chance with them, but that hadn’t stopped you from hanging posters in your bedroom and doodling their name beneath yours inside of scribbled hearts in your diary.

Regardless, it had taken close to a month for the negativity to die down, and you hadn’t had Lando then, either, so now shouldn’t be much different.

In fact, everyone on the Manchester City team━ trainers, physios, media coordinatiors, and anyone inbetween━ has been very polite about everything between you and Garrett. A lot of them have just avoided saying anything about it, which you’re very grateful for because you don’t think you’d be able to hold back your grimace while thanking them for their well wishes, and the few who have mentioned it typically only say something vague like a wishing you the best of luck or hoping you’re happy.

An intern gave you a sympathetic smile the other day, and you’d nearly burst into tears in the middle of the office of the Director of Communications, so you know you aren’t truly alone in this.

You just feel alone.

Exiting the bathroom is a simple affair. There’s no one standing post outside ready to give you any shit for being hidden away, and nobody comes sprinting around the corner as you make your way down the hall to the press conference room that’s been temporarily turned into your base of operations.

You think you’ll probably be able to go the rest of the afternoon without running into anyone, when you open your door and find━ sitting in the front row of the seats typically saved for journalists and the press, scrolling across his phone with a disinterested look painted across his face━ Jack Grealish.

“Jack,” you greet, a bit shocked. You close the door to the room gently behind you, and cross the distance to your desk. “Did we have a meeting scheduled? It must’ve completely slipped my mind, I sincerely apologize.”

He offers you a polite smile. “No, we didn’t, so no need to be sorry. I actually just wanted to check in. See how things are going with everything.”

You blink at him in surprise. Apart from Garrett, you haven’t really had much time to speak with the other players. They wish you good morning and good afternoon when they see you, and if a ball goes astray they always call out for you to watch your head, but between their morning training and their afternoon training, their strategy reviews at lunch, and the frequent in between meetings with physios, nutritionists, and trainers, they don’t get much time to chit chat with a simple photographer.

You clear your throat, “Erm, it’s going well. I’ve gotten some really good shots these past few days. There’s one with Rodrigo that I’m particularly proud of. It should do well with the fans.”

“And things with Ward?”

You purse your lips.

“Figured.” Jack sighs. “Look, nearly everyone you run into here knows or has at least some inkling into what he’s like. He’s a prick. None of the lads on the team like him, it’s why the managers are trying to get him out of here.”

You lower yourself down into your chair. “He told me they were planning to trade him off because of his reputation.”

Jack scoffs, “Yeah, ‘cause that’s the ‘official’ reason. They can’t cut his contract early for legal reasons, so they’re waiting for it to expire and coming up with an excuse for why they ain’t re-signing him. It’s really just ‘cause the rest of us can’t keep dealing with his massive ego and the fact that he’s a misogynistic fuck who doesn’t know the first thing about respect.”

“Fucking tell me about it,” you mutter with a sigh.

If he expected you to defend Garrett and is surprised by the fact that you haven’t, Jack doesn’t show it. He looks relaxed sitting across from you, like you’re having a casual conversation and not actively shit talking a member of his team. It gives you the impression that he knows significantly more about Garrett than you do, and that because of what he knows he probably figured out that one party in the relationship is not the most willing of participants.

“How’d you get all wrapped up it in then? Didn’t figure you to be the type to go after pricks like Ward.”

You debate over whether you should tell him or not. There isn’t much Jack can do about the situation regardless, but it would at least get things off your chest and if someone else knew then maybe you wouldn’t feel so alone anymore.

There’s only so many days you can spend hiding out in the women’s restroom trying not to bawl your eyes out, and you’ve already reached your limit.

You heave a sigh, “It’s kind of fucked up really.” A pen on your desk catches your attention and you start to fiddle with it, avoiding Jack’s eyes which have focused directly onto you. “He asked if I would help him fix up his reputation by pretending to be his girlfriend so he could show everyone that he’s matured and can hold down a steady relationship. When I told him no, he threatened to make up a lie about inappropriate conduct to get me fired and blacklisted from the industry, so for the sake of preserving my career I agreed.”

“Bloody fucking hell,” Jack murmurs, shaking his head. “I’m real sorry he did that, Y/N.”

You shrug. “It’s happened, so, there’s nothing I can really do except wait it out at this point.”

When you look up and meet his gaze, Jack looks murderous. His hands are clenched into fists on the armrests, knuckles white with the strength of his grip. His brows are furrowed, and his lips are twisted downward in a scowl.

“If you need anything,” he starts, “let me know. And I mean it. We all know how Ward can be. He’s a knobhead. So if you need anything━” his emphasis on the word and what that implies makes you feel more comforted than anything has since the whole fiasco started, “━then you let me know, or you tell one of the other boys and they’ll find me, alright?”

All you can do is nod.

•Robby is having theeeee worst shift ever omg poor guy. I just wanna give him a hug. Obviously I understand why Jake reacted how he did but like be nice to Robby ??? and Robby saying “I’ll remember her after you don’t. i remember all of them” (paraphrasing) and having a panic attack like omg my poor baby. and again with that damn peds room with the animals on the walls. let Robby have at least 5 good minutes jfc

•the way the incel teen came back to hospital idk how i feel about the idea that he did the mass shooting anymore. idk like “just shot multiple rounds into a large crowd …. oh yeah lemme run back to hospital and grab my mom real quick” would be an interesting route to take if you’re a mass casualty shooter but this show does like to surprise us so we’ll see on that

•so proud of all my doctors and nurses and hospital personnel. like they are doing such great work. Abbott with all the instruments in his little survival tools kit. Santos being an intern and doing something she def shouldn’t have but it worked (and getting praise and a tiny reprimand from Abbott). Mohan relieving the pressure in the stoner guy’s head. they all have done insane work this shift, my goodness. and also grown a lot through this one shift

•Collins is gonna be in for such a shock when she turns her phone back on or sees the news of what happened and what she missed lol imagine the amount of messages on her phone rn. also considering there’s only 2 episodes left, i hope she comes back for at least Ep15 since (based on Ep14 promo) it doesn’t seem like she’ll be there for “8:00 P.M.”

•McKay’s ankle monitor loves to go off at the most inconvenient times lol and her breaking it clearly has repercussions because (based on Ep14 promo) it seems like she gets arrested or something next episode. but hopefully my girl’s ability to practice medicine isn’t badly affected. matter of fact take that ankle monitor off her fr like what did she even do

•Whitaker drilling an IO into a conscious man and Mel being like “team huddle … why did you do that” lolol the tiny chuckle worthy moments are very appreciated by me. also that one lady who is so in shock that doesn’t speak is so saddening to see. like surviving something so horrifying and then seeing the insane the effect of it at the hospital. the blood. the screams. the dead bodies. how scary and traumatic

•Langdon going around practicing medicine as if a mere like 2-3 hours prior he wasn’t discovered to be stealing medicine and abusing it … interested how that’ll get tied up. it doesn’t seem like that’ll be resolved by Ep15 though. definitely seems like a plot point that’ll get delved into further in S2

•the doctor out at triage needing a bathroom break because yeah you definitely shouldn’t have drank all that coffee before lol and Robby’s better than me cause I would’ve told him like yeah that’s why I was looking at you crazy drinking all that coffee as if we were about to have an insane volume of incoming patients tf were you thinking

~ episode 12 and 13 were both so good like i was so locked in. getting insight to what happens in the most local hospital after a disastrous event is in many ways horrifying. and, as always, i felt like i was working that shift with them

Voyager rewatch s7 ep17: Human Error

Ughhh what a godawful mess this ep is. I don't even know where to begin with all the things wrong with it, but here goes:

For starters, Seven doesn't need another romance plot. They tried and failed with that stupid 'My Fair Lady' episode, and it just doesn't fit her character. Plus, there's a lot of way more interesting things to explore with her than some random nonsensical hetero romance shoehorned in at the last minute, when we should be at a point in the series where established relationships should be the focus, because, y'know, the show is ending soon.

To have Seven 'practicing relationships' on the holodeck is also an incredibly nonsensical choice for the last season- she has real friendships with real people on the ship at this point, she shouldn't have to 'practice' with fake people anymore, jfc, she's way past that. Choosing to recreate people she knows on the holodeck is weird and gross too- they're her friends that she knows and lives with and talks to every day, to choose one of them at random to just have fake holodeck sexytimes with is all kinds of creepy and not okay.

Since this was written in a time before unauthorized recreation of people's likenesses and voices by ai was a real life issue, I guess I can kinda understand why they writers wouldn't have considered the legal ramifications of that, and wouldn't have considered that in the future there would be laws against nonconsensual use of people's likenesses. But even so, just on a human level, I don't get how they could fail to find the entire concept of creating basically a sex doll version of one of your coworkers on the holodeck deeply disturbing and wrong. It should absolutely be illegal, but even if weren't, it's still demeaning and violating and horrible. Seven has learned enough about humanity by this point to know that you shouldn't do that to someone.

And why they'd have her choose Chakotay, of all people, I have absolutely no goddamn clue. They had that whole episode of her trying to find a 'compatible' crewman on the ship before, and Chakotay's name didn't even come up. They have very little in common, no romantic chemistry whatsoever, and Chakotay has long been established to have an unofficial relationship with Captain Janeway for pretty much the entire series. The flirting and pining between Janeway and Chakotay has been there from the beginning and only gets more pronounced as time goes on, to the point that the entire crew has to know about it, even Seven. They literally have romantic candlelit dinners in Janeway's quarters multiple times a week- you gotta believe the crew would be pointing them out to Seven like 'yeah, they say they're not a couple, but that's couple behavior, actually'. Plus, there's something horribly misogynist about some male writer deciding that the younger blonde woman should want to 'steal' the older lead female character's man.

But aside from the terrible writing choices, the scenes of Seven and holo!Chakotay together are just deeply uncomfortable to watch. They're so forced, and so cheesy, the sexual innuendo is so heavy handed, and there's just zero chemistry between them. Idk how anybody could watch this without throwing up in their mouth a little, it's just so bad.

But the cherry on top of this insulting garbage sundae is the idea that Seven's cortical node would overload from 'too much strong emotions' after having a spat with her fictional holo!Chaktotay, when Seven has clearly been through WAY more emotionally wrenching things than that. Are they seriously expecting us to believe that she had a stronger emotional response to having a disagreement with a holodeck character than, say, the time her adopted son Icheb insisted on risking his life to save her when she was dying??? REALLY?! Or stronger than the many times when Captain Janeway showed her compassion and fought for her even when she didn't feel like she deserved it??? REALLY?! Are they fucking kidding?! That's such an insult to her character and all the growth she's had, and all the realtionships she's built over the years. Not to mention insulting to the audience who've been invested in these characters. The idea that heteronormative romance is the end-all be-all of human relationships is clueless and reductive to begin with, and this wasn't even a real relationship with a real person! It was a creepy holodeck sex doll! WTF?!?!

And the fact that the Doctor condones Seven's unauthorized, non-consensual use of Chakotay's image when she tells him about it is worse still- but considering the episode where the Doctor uses the crew's images on the holodeck without their consent is still upcoming, I guess it's sadly indicative of his total lack of moral compass on that issue.

This episode was such a waste- even the one nice scene of B'Elanna's baby shower, where all the characters got to have fun moments and be like a family, was cancelled out, because it was also just a holodeck simulation. Why the hell didn't we get to see the real one? The audience deserves to see the important life events of the characters we've followed for years, we deserve to get to be part of their community on the ship we've come to love- to cheat us out of those moments, which are the backbone of the show- in favor of ridiculous, empty garbage like this episode is worse than lazy, it's insulting. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this episode whatsoever, and I know I'm not the only one who wishes it didn't exist.

Tl;dr: One of the worst written, most out of character episodes in the whole series, that tried it's best to tear down Seven's character as horribly as it could. Impossible to watch without cringing.

Dovepaw being worried for the other Clans + her thoughts about having this power should put her above the Clan rules could be so interesting. the series back-and-forths over Lionblaze (we must protect ThunderClan) and Dovepaw (we must protect all the Clans) even though Lionblaze gets annoyed at Dovepaw for using her powers to look after ThunderClan???

The whole "being obsessed with Prophecy and what it means" is probs a part of Jay's character (as he baso became a med cat to fulfil his destiny) but it also feels like a gross misunderstanding of what a Prophecy is. All the "the dark forest is rising. This might be what the Three is meant for" is like putting the horse before the cart- a prophecy is meant to describe a situation and hint at the character/means to solve it; but PO3/OoTS has the characters/means to solve, but no conflict :/ its a bit backwards.

I like the mentions of Firestar + Sandstorm going on night hunts etc.

this battle is crazy tho. I wish more of the DF plot was about stirring up trouble between the Clans and specific troublemakers in each Clan rather than the later nebelous 'dark warriors invade the forest' battle. Ill get to that one day

Been a while since I've done this. I think the last time was for the HBO Last of Us? Either way. Here's some of my random thoughts as I worked my way through Devil May Cry.

I played (and enjoyed) the dmc video games back in the day and i was, unfortunately, excited about this show going in. I wanted to have fun here, as I've had fun with the franchise in the past. And I did. The show is a fun watch. I think both fans of the franchise and new arrivals who know nothing of the games and just want a kickass gory anime to watch can enjoy this.

Some of the comments i make kind of spoil plot lines from the games and the show itself. This is commentary for all 8 episodes, listed in order.

But good for her for being able to distinguish between civilians and the actual enemy. I'm not used to this whole refugee dynamic with the demons from a dmc franchise but I'll take it. Considering Sparda cant have been the only "good" one capable of emotion/love/empathy/etc.

LOL lady calling Rabbit's operation nazi-esque is fuckin' hilarious considering USA-VP is moments away from eradicating a bunch of ppl based purely on his religious-fueled hatred of something different from himself. Also "funny" considering current real world events. Gotta love the point made when humans turn out to be the "monsters" Rabbit used VP's hatred and he played his part perfectly.

I've never been in fandom like this before so I cant tell if this reaction is normal or not after the "canon romance ending" -it feels more like ppl want to errase other versions of BNHA the fandom comes up with unless they "agree" with a supposedly canon love pair-. However I believe this is not just a BNHA thing, its probably bc of this new wave of ppl in fandom since the 2020 lockdown that dont know how fandom content works -to the point some ppl cant even understand how someone can ship another pair that isnt canon or after others are canonized-. And I say this as someone who actually joined actively the bnha fandom in 2022, but was looking at the content since what, 2016? 2017? idk, it was pretty wild lol

Some ppl just ship bc its aesthetically cute -and thats completely fine! This is playing with dolls, not spitting into the author's face or something, and in fact the shippers (and fangirls) are the ones that make the work stay as strong historically speaking-.

I think they dont fit the rival trope as well as others bc its clear for other shonens how those characters are mainly rivals/friendly rivals, but in BNHA the rivalry aspect of their relationship gets overshadow by the care they have for each other completely outside of that -while other characters feel like they are meant to end as forever rivals on the same side, which can be romantic in fanon too, bkdk clearly felt like they had to end united, the negative feelings towards the other erased-. The rivalry is a minor aspect of their relationship deep down, almost an excuse to be allowed together, and there is softness and rage tied to each other's well being; their rivalry was never about a betrayal, or a competition, but Katsuki being unable to accept the feelings he has when Deku is around (the inferiority, the fear of a person who never takes themselves into account and risks it all, his idea of who he truly was breaking just bc of his presence, confusion out of not understanding what's going on in Deku's mind, etc.), and once he starts to accept he was wrong, the rivalry becomes just an external aspect of their relationship: Katsuki uses this in order to motivate Izuku into pushing harder and work more into his goals, and also to not make him worry about him knowing he gets unstable when the ppl he cares about get hurt.

With this I mean, whenever Katsuki says something about him being better than Deku at something, or telling him he is going to surpass him, is all about making Izuku confident in his abilities -Katsuki sees him as a strong person, so he should also consider himself like that-. And even when its clear Katsuki is struggling to keep up, literally falling behind him, he says how Deku shouldn't be "making him slow" just bc he fears Izuku will crumble if he knows the truth, which is what happened with Dark Deku -he realized he was the "only strong enough", so he left everyone behind in order to protect them. Katsuki's words are there not bc he is unaware of his weaknesses but bc he knows deku's. After that, once he achieves greatness and becomes on the same level, he literally tells him to not let him surpass him -a reminder of this play that simplifies everything, "dont let me leave you behind, I know you can do this". The rivalry isnt meant to be an actual competition, but something that united them and made them better, while being together.

Its clear how the rivalry is not treated as an actual shonen rivalry, and 431 reinforces it too: Katsuki's words tie Izuku's self perception with his participation in their competitive phrases/games, and his complete cluelessness over it means he isnt taking himself into account positively (and accidentally insults the ppl he cares about bc of it). Its a negative sign, that he doesnt even consider himself when Katsuki talks about someone surpassing him, nor recalls those words.

Basically their dynamic is not exclusively nor mainly a shonen rivalry in the first place, which is why so many ppl also started feeling like something was going on between them, even if they weren't shippers.

I believe manga, tv shows etc are usually considered not worthy of any analysis, that if you do it means you are a pathetic obsessed fan by interacting with the content. It wasn't a good romance, and the set up was forgotten quite early with many, many missed opportunities to make them feel like they need to end together in any way; instead, its like they look into the same direction, going on their own ways. And that could still be interesting, but the truth is, 431 doesnt make it romantic clearly nor well written, and we dont have to pretend it was just bc they added blush (which btw, it always bothered me how bad it was drawn, like they added a bunch of lines on top of their faces as a last minute thought, specially with ochako, who is seen to have BOTH her usual little blush and the big sloppy one, which makes me feel like they added it after finishing the chapter, instead of being planned from the start. This is bc I think we have never seen that kind of blush before -the most similar example is Ochako with a dark face, meaning is red, and her little blush at the same time, but not the "line" kind of blush on top of her usual one, yk? just made things look worse to me).

What possible advantages can they grant the fae that they don't have already? How tf are there so many queens when the human territory is so small? For that matter, why tf is Hybern going to war over a tiny handful of humans? Why involve this convoluted plot with turning the mortal queens into Fae when it seems like the humans don't even know of their existence so they wouldn't listen to or follow them in the first place

honestly speaking this season was alright. it def did not compare to season one, which i was expecting. yet it wasn’t up to par with it either. it felt like too much and not enough at the same time so it kinda fell flat to me

in season one everything was connected and there were very clear motives. from the bullying, so mun’s parents, the evil spirits, ji chung shin himself, and the corrupt government. and chung shin’s backstory made me feel for him which is what made him a great antagonist imo. like i loved him

but hwang pil gwang (slick back), gelly (hongjoong variant LMFAOO), and wong (just wong tbh)….mmph

i can’t really remember the beginning it took me 2 months to finish it but, dude and his crew showed up outta nowhere and just started creating chaos for funsies???? now don’t get me wrong, i’m all for villainy for fun but i just couldn’t get into for some reason with them. it just feels like their characters weren’t fleshed out enough for me to actually like them no matter how fine they are bc the whole crew could get it

and then we move to ma ju seok my adoring and loving husband. now this was something i could get behind. him going on a rampage trying to get revenge for his wife and baby, having enough rage to summon an evil spirit on his own??? like that’s what i’m talking about!!! i felt for him and wanted him to succeed bc that con man was also annoying as shit. i really and truly wanted him dead bc he was the absolute worst jfc

if the story only focused on him, and getting his revenge and having to take him down. and only him. seeing how far his rage could take him and what would happen ON HIS OWN without any outside manipulation pil hwang *coughs* would have been a lil more interesting to me and i think i would have enjoyed it more. ik pil gwang wanted his power n shit BUT WHY. like give me a reason.

and don’t get me started on jeok beong. i was um, expecting a lil bit more. yoo in soo is a FANTASTIC actor. if you told me he was gwi nam from aouad before hand i would have passed out. THAT MF RANGE IS INSANE!! but, but, jeok bong could have been more. i love him to death but he stayed the same person the entire time. granted towards the end he did start meshing with the group a bit better and throwing ideas out and stuff but i dunno bruh. i was feeling him and not feeling him at the same time.

the same goes for kang ki young. baby if you say that was myung seok from attorney woo i would have passed out pt2. like he did his thang bc i deadass hated his character even tho he was looking good as hell

the lack of so mun’s friends also bummed me out bc i really like them and they are an important part of his life. wanted to see more of those three together as well. my found family was not found with them this season

but the counters dynamic was still a++ like that’s real family. teasing ha na and do hwi, ha na having to save so mun while he was in a coma, then going to yung to ask why so mun leaving, jeok bong calling mun his brother just *wipes tear* magnificent

Yes, but not always. Sometimes I forget and sometimes when the comment isn't very detailed I'm just not sure what to say. But I am thankful for every comment (I also feel weird about the fact that my replying inflates my own stats?)

All my fics have fairly bittersweet endings I think. But the last sentence of Under Both His Thumbs is almost anxiety inducing.

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Probably Teenage Petulance because it's kinda my most straightforward story. But it's also about pretty terrible grief, so maybe I'm Looking Through You, which I'd say has quite a hopeful if uncertain ending.

that time I started writing an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit starring various Beatles authors solving the mystery of the Beatles breakup.

I think I'm fairly good at empathetically depicting characters, even when they're maybe acting irrationally. I also think I'm able to weave real history well into my narrative and I'd say I'm good at themes.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I have a tendency toward melodrama – less in the plot, but in characters' reactions to the plot.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

This is such a specific question. I used Bavarian German once in I'm Looking Through You actually.

I don't want my reader to have to look up what something means or scroll to the bottom of the page to read a footnote. So I would only include it if it wasn't pertinent to understand or translate in-line.

I'm Looking Through You represents an entire phase of my life and writing it taught me so much so it's in a sense the most formative thing I've made… that being said, Thinking Of Speaking My Mind is a fic that is so emotionally tied to a lot of my feelings about the Beatles' story. I still think about it a lot.

Fic data from 2023

Happy new year! This was a big year for me because I got back into reading fanfiction, and boy howdy did I read a lot of it. Over the year I tracked what fics I read got that sweet, sweet data about how much of what I read and when. So now it's time for it to all come together! I put the major stats above the read more line, and below are some other little details about the tags and types of fics. Without further ado, let's get into it!

My goal this year was to read 1000 fics which I realized around June was NOT going to happen. I actually read about 651 fics including re-reads. Not too shabby!

The total words of all the fics I started was 5,196,016 and multiplying by the percent finished (could be >100 for re-reads, or <100 for dnf) I read about 6,214,399 words. So, HOLY BALLS 6.2 MILLION WORDS???? JFC. THATS LIKE 16K EVERY SINGLE DAY. ok i will never again tell myself i didn't read enough this year. Can you imagine if I had hit 1000 fics?

Something else fun about the word count is that the average length was about 1584 words/fic.

My top months by number of fics were February (108 fics), April (88 fics), and March (66 fics). In terms of word count, my top months were February (1.4 million words), January (1.16 million words) and August (804k words).

Before we get into tags, here's the graphs for the stuff I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that the first two are about fics I started, not necessarily finished, so the count may vary a bit.

The top three longest fics I read were meet me where the light greets the dark at 115514 words, Subito Sempre at 107053 words, and This Game We Play at 101717 words. Those also happen to be some of my favorite fics of all time.

Here's a graph about the length of the fic I read. "Format of a oneshot" is something that may be multiple chapters but was short enough that it could've been one. Idk this database was built on vibes.

I know 54% of the authors! Speaking of, there were 208 distinct authors I read from this year. My top author was JynxedOracle at 33 fics!

VegasPete almost had it for a while but KimChay will always be my ride or die. Also, if you can't tell, I basically read almost exclusively KinnPorsche The Series fics. For my top fandom outside of KPTS, that would be MCU, and my top non-KP relationship was SpideyPool. My highest rarepair within KPTS will go to my grave or the groupchat. :*)

I’m sure the person who made the og post has played with some annoying CR fans but jfc the critiques they have on one thread I saw are nonsensical. “It’s scripted bc they make fancy battle maps and the players know they have to go into an encounter unlike in a home game” have you never played a module? Had a DM custom make a battle map or really cool mini? Heard of a BBEG boss fight? Yeah sometimes encounters get subverted but 1) that happens in real play too, and 2) it is also a true thing that plenty of people in home games go into encounters understanding they are going to have a Big Cool Fight and they go along with the setup on purpose bc they /want/ to have the Big Cool Fight because it’s??? Fun??? The idea that you should be ADVERSERIAL to the story beats that your DM is trying to set up is imo way more fucking likely to be harmful to your ttrpg experience than any misplaced expectations from real plays. “The players care about Big Story Moments instead of actually important things like logistics and minmaxing” do I just play with too many theatre kids to understand this perspective. Why are you out here talking like people don’t or can’t play dnd for the narrative. Like you can play it as a war game if you wanna but you don’t have to?? If you’ve played with somebody who can’t be assed to learn how their character works mechanically then I’m sorry, that sucks, but it’s not in opposition to caring about the character and the story as narrative. “DMs in real plays drop massive shocking story reveals but this never happens in home games bc everyone universally agrees it is more fun when players figure things out for themselves” 1) which real plays are you watching, because every single one I have watched always drops plenty of hints about major plot reveals, and 2) lmao? Three or four sessions ago our DM revealed an NPC had been secretly a dragon the whole time and all of us lost our minds, shit fucking ruled. “They just want to do bits and funny character voices, things that are NOT what REAL TTRPGS are ABOUT” why do you hate fun

Yes, sure, someone who’s a big fan of CR or D20 might come in with some unrealistic expectations of how things are going to run, or with grand ideas of weird homebrews and such that you have to temper down into something workable for your table. But the idea that the game they are playing, the experience they are having, is something wholly divorced from what actually playing ttrpgs is like is simply not true. I know because I’ve PLAYED games with big sweeping narratives and dramatic character moments and one of our party members doesn’t always remember how her stats work but the rest of us are willing to help her out because she makes big, wild, hilarious narrative swings and she’s a fun person to play with and we’ve gotten side tracked onto weird bits with silly character voices and come back around to do the big incredible encounter our DM planned for us because it’s a fucking awesome set piece, and all of it is fun and all of us are having a good time. I’m very sure we’re having a good time because we’ve been playing for FIVE YEARS at this point and we’re still going strong.

Idk, if you’re a real play fan who saw the post I’m vagueing and are now feeling depressed about actually finding a table that gets you the kind of high that CR gives you, I’m taking you by the shoulders and telling you not everyone is going to be a weird asshole about you wanting to do some performance in the role playing game. Tables that like silly character voices and dramatic plot beats and will help you figure out how to play your character effectively while still doing the fun story stuff are out there, I promise.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

ALL of them are Supergirl from back in the early-ish days of the show when it was a pretty massive (by femslash standards, I suppose) and very active fandom! It's actually so interesting seeing how absolutely nothing I've written in more than half a decade even shows up, since I've largely switched to smaller fandoms since then.

But the top 5 fics by kudos are:

Stronger Together, a collection of one-shots for various Supergirl ships (with a few gen fics mixed in), which has nearly 5k kudos (WILD to me as someone now in a fandom with maybe 25 people total haha)

Welcome to the Gayborhood, my first ever fic, a looong Sanvers and Supercorp professor AU that still keeps the alien/supernatural elements of canon

6,500 miles away...but getting closer, a Sanvers epistolary fic that my wife and I actually co-wrote and posted 1 letter/email per day every day for many months

Noise Complaint, a Sanvers next-door neighbor AU that, hilariously, given its placement in the top 5 here, is what catalyzed a series of events that led to me very much leaving the fandom (and fandom writ large for nearly a year)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I really try to! Sometimes if it's from a person I know well, I end up responding via DMs, esp if there are questions about what comes next, plotting elements, etc., that I don't necessary want everyone to see while the fic is still being posted, but mostly I try to respond on AO3. I've gotten a bit worse in the past few years just because I'll manage to eke out a bit of time to write, which puts me behind on my work, and then I don't leave myself time to respond, and by the time I DO have time, it feels awkwardly late to do so. But even if I don't respond, I absolutely love/cherish/adore/etc. every single kind comment I've ever been given <3

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Forgoten, but not Gone - a Sanvers amnesia AU set post-breakup that's heavy on the angst with a rather ambiguous ending. I got talked into writing a part 2 that resolves the angst haha, but taken on it's own it's definitely my angstiest ending!

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Huh idk! Most of my fics end on fairly happy, if a bit open, endings. I'm not a big fan of having all the loose ends tied up, and I realllyyyy don't do the marriage/2 kids/white picket fence epilogue, so I guess maybe the political AU has to be up there because it actually envisions a world where a queer woman wins the presidency on a progressive platform, and that feels rather utopian 🙃

8. Do you get hate on fic?

Not in a while, though I used to back in the days, like super vitriolic shit (big fandoms with too-big emotions, man... which has really kept me away maybe forever from those kinds of fandoms!)

9. Do you write smut?

Haha very much so. I've written and posted before about why, but I really believe there's so much interesting character work and exploration that can be done by exploring characters' pleasures, their desires (both thwarted and realized), their fantasies, etc. Obviously smut isn't the only way to do this, but fanfic feels like one of the few venues where it's a real possibility!

10. Do you write crossovers?

Nah, not really. I've written a handful of bring characters x and y into the universe of another show fics, but that feels mostly different. Every so often I'll borrow vague character outlines for tertiary characters in other fics just to see if folks recognize them (had Grace Hanson as a grumpy background character in a Sanvers fic set at PT for instance hah)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Once or twice, but we got them taken down

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, one of my SG fics was translated into Russian! I'm not sure if it's still up (tbh I can't recall which one; it's been a long time!) I've also had a couple podfics now made of my fics, one of which I still need to go listen to when I get the time!!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yeah! The long-form Sanvers epistolary fic my wife and I co-wrote together, and a group of Supercat authors got together and did a delightfully chaotic round robin, each writing one sentence, then setting a timer for the next person to write the next sentence, etc., until we had Intergalactic Standard Cuddling

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Oh man, I really don't know that I have a favorite! I really appreciate what various ships can offer me at different times - there are certain themes that make sense to explore with one pairing but not at all with another, or certain AUs that work in one fandom but not really in another. Basically, if a show is giving me multiple female characters who interact in canon in ways that go beyond existing near each other, I'm intrigued, and if these characters actually get depth and complexity, I'm probably in! There are, however, some ships that I might not end up feeling fannish/creative about even though I love them as ships (I talked a lot to @trying-to-get-somewhere-real about this recently, actually!), so it's hard to name a favorite when the metrics get all wonky!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

I don't want to say never, but I have a Cat-centric fic that'll end on Supercat that just has a lot of angst that coincided with a period of unexpected loss and grief in my own life in ways that have made it really hard to get back into even now (it just feels so...enmeshed with that moment, even though the timing was utterly coincidental)

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I do a good job with dialogue and getting characters' voices down - I'm really into the character side of things (which is also what gets me invested fannishly in shows! I want a show that cares about developing their characters first and foremost vs. a show where plot takes priority)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Certain kinds of action scenes haha - also I tire easily of writing things that feel repetitive to things I've done/written before (this was more of an issue when I took prompts)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Largely, this isn't something I've had to deal with much outside of maybe a few phrases and sentences from multilingual characters. I've talked before about how it was actually the language/translation barrier that kept me from writing for Madre Solo hay Dos. I don't speak Spanish, and getting a show entirely via the Netflix-provided translations meant 1) I was fairly certain there were some word choice/dialect peculiarities I was missing, and 2) I couldn't catch the rhythms of their speech, the cadence of their voices at least in ways that corresponded to the specific words. For me, voice matters so much, and it really felt like a barrier to not have access to the source language because I felt like I couldn't do these two women justice!

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Oh I've answered this elsewhere with 2-3 works, and tbh I don't think it's changed since then! I'm actually far more interested in others' favorite fics of mine because it's so interesting to think about the question of *what* sticks with a person from yours (it's often so idiosyncratic!!)
