this is me desperately making timelines with gideon's mom and gideon's birth and the 2 details I know about gideon's mom and her birth

you know what, I'm gonna quote, since I went to fetch it

"One day eighteen years ago, Gideon's mother had tumbled down the middle of the shaft in the drag chute and a battered hazard suit, like some moth drifting slowly down into the dark. The suit had been out of power for a couple of minutes. The woman landed brain-dead. All the battery power had been sucked away by a bio-container plugged into the suit, the kind you'd carry a transplant limb in, and inside that container was Gideon, only a day old."

and to get there as quick as they need to, they have to cut through the River

the one with the ghosties and ghoulies

that's what the ward was for

if they went through regular means, it'd take too long and, doing it this way, they could be there super fast, but they need to get in the River and come out the other way in the right spot

and intact

so it's this situation

so, in order to do that, they have to hold on to their souls and their cav souls and whatever they've got using the skills from the first test

so, we're leaving harrow and yandere twin trying to learn for the first time how to not die by crossing the River because the emperor plans things terribly and mercysomething is too preoccupied being upset at everything all the time

THANK YOU FOR ASKING also i had an entire essay typed up for you and tumblr lost the draft. apologies because this re-do is Definitely Worse

my unhinged theory is this: Gideon has, and has always had, a fragment of Alecto's soul inside her, that lay somewhat dormant until it was "activated" by Harrow consuming her soul (and thereby also consuming the Alecto fragment).

bear with me: we know Harrow began to be haunted when a fragment of Alecto escaped into Harrow when she kissed her in the tomb at age 10. Harrow's individual fragment wasn't enough for the Body-vision to have sentience OR for her to, as a child, be sending out "I'm here!" signals that were trackable by the other RBs, so they were basically just hanging out.

HOWEVER. when Harrow ate Gideon's soul, two things happenened: 1) Alecto/The Body started speaking to her, protecting her, gained enough coherence to eventually becoming Nona, etc and 2) Harrow became a becon for the RBs, specifically Number 7, who immediately turned towards her to make a beeline to the Mithraeum.

This makes me think that Lyctorhood "activated" the Alecto-fragment in a certain way, and it makes sense to ME that the trigger would be that fragment getting bigger, via Harrow taking up Gideon's soul (including whatever fragments Gideon herself was carrying)

"evidence" (wild speculating) for Gideon having Alecto's soul under the cut!

1. the gold eyes

in these books, eye color is explicitly linked to what soul is in what body. this is a heavily important plot mechanic throughout every single book - it feels "off" for Gideon's eye color to be the ONLY time in the entire series where eye color means "genetics" and not "soul".

Gideon does not have a normal human eye color. the color is described as like an egg yolk & gold coins, and no human eye color reaches even close. This is further evidenced by how when Augustine and Mercymorn saw Gideon in Harrow's eyes, they thought Alecto had woken up. pre-NtN, this made more sense as The Body was assumed by the fandom to look somewhat like Harrow. post-NtN, we know that Harrow and Alecto looked *absolutley* nothing alike, and therfore these eyes are not fucking normal, they're weird enough that if you see them you automatically assume "8 ft tall Barbie Doll Alecto Woke Up" even when the body you are presented with is 5 foot nothing with black hair.

"Lipochrome... recessive" does not make sense even for the most basic understanding of genetics, which I am assuming is what is happening here - eye color genetics can get really complicated but colloquial understanding is that recessive genes present themselves when BOTH parents are carriers. John had gold eyes because Alecto chose him, but.... how would Wake be a carrier for what is basically Alecto's stigmata? it makes NO sense for Wake to be a carrier of the Alecto-specific, egg yolk kind of eyes

2. the emission

John and Alecto's souls are inherently linked. rather than being two seperate souls, they are more like two parts of continuous whole -- John hid himself in Alecto, and he hid Alecto in him. it's not even two puzzle pieces they are just layered over and continuous with each other

John, then, would very reasonable "pass on" a part of Alecto when he, ah. well. you know. blew a big load.

maybe the Holy Emission carried soul fragments, is what I'm saying

3. the two hander

Occam's razor posits that Gideon likes the two hander and is good at it because she is cool and buff and it was the option presented to her. BUT!!!

Nona instinctivly knows how to hold a two handed sword. Alecto has a greatsword with her in the tomb. Gideon uses a two hander. idk makes u think!!

okay, everyone's being really vague on my timeline discrepancy post from earlier, and idk if anyone else has made a post/theory abt this, but i also don't care. i'm gonna rehash this, mostly for my own benefit, but everyone is welcome to also come have a look and tell me if i'm missing smth. this post does contain spoilers for htn, so reader's discretion.

so, timeline clarifiers, per htn subheadings. let's start easy. this is the earliest date given in htn in its entirety:

parados (act 1) is the chapter where Harrow talks to Ortus in River bubble Drearburh. it's the second (chronological, not linear) chapter we read in the book at all. it's set 13-12 weeks prior to leaving for Canaan House, per gtn timeline details. it is the first time Gideon's name is explicitly redacted (or as i like to call it, Ortuscorrected).

if we ignore the (upcoming) discrepancy's date, the next earliest subheading date following parados's is, conveniently:

epiparodos (act 5) is the chapter immediately preceding/following Harrow's lobotomy, as told from Ianthe's perspective. while the setting is not explicitly stated, per Harrow's narration from chapter 45 (act 5) and the Upon Coherence letter in chapter 4 (act 1), we can glean that Harrow lobotomised herself 3-4 days following Gideon's death on the First House, which would mean they are still on the Erebos (and would argue that the Heir's stay at Canaan House lasted roughly three weeks to a month before Cytherea was killed).

the next (linear) date subheading:

chapter 1 (act 1), nine months. in this chapter, Harrow is stated to be on the Erebos, in a hospital wing. she has been given Gideon's longsword and is battling the awful psychic powers Wake's revenant (inside the longsword) is using on her, likely as an attempt to kill her so she can follow the thanergetic link into Harrow's body and use it for her own means (killing John) (this is mostly conjecture, but i see no other reason for the sword to have this effect on her, bar her lobotomy sparking a vomiting response as opposed to an intercranial hemmorhage response to the memory of Gideon). in the few chapters following this, Harrow is told about Resurrection Beasts, hears the Body speak to her for the first time in eight (estimate) years, recieves the Upon Coherence letter from Ianthe, and is nearly smothered in her sleep (or so it seems). at this point in the narrative, the only OG lyctor she's met is Cytherea, who is dead. she meets Mercymorn as she's being rolled onto a shuttle bound for the Mithraeum. it is only once on the Mithraeum that she meets Augustine and G1deon. during G1deon's entrance, he informs them bluntly that Resurrection Beast #7 is "just under ten months" away.

the next subheading is both chronological and linear, even though the exact placement in the timeline is somewhat unclear:

chapter 12 (act 2), six months. at this point, Harrow, Ianthe, and John have been on the Mithraeum for an unspecified amount of time. Harrow has killed twelve planets. she and Ianthe have been being tutored by Augustine in swordsmanship and understanding the river. in chapter 13 (act 2) Ianthe makes a crack about Harrow making it to her room from the docking bay without being assassinated. Harrow spends the next four chapters giving basic biographies for Mercymorn, Augustine, and Ianthe, as well as speaking with the Body, and revealing the truth of her conception to John.

now comes the discrepancy. the next timeline clarifier, per chapter subheading, is chronological, but oddly not linear:

chapter 19 (act 2), ten months. TEN.

this would place chapter 19 (act 2) prior to Harrow's lobotomy (nine months and twenty-nine days before; per epiparodos, act 5), which doesn't make any sense, because chapter 19 is the chapter where G1deon's first attempt on Harrow's life is recounted. he attacks her in the kitchen on the Mithraeum, quite clearly stated to be only a few days after she arrived on board, and she only narrowly survives the attack because Mercymorn intervenes, to her apparent disgust.

now, could it be that the attack in the kitchen is not explicitly specified to be the initial attack in question? could it be a sleight of hand on Muir's part to say that the first atatck came before Harrow even arrived on board teh Mithraeum, and then recount a completely different one? could the first attempt on Harrow's life actually be the attempted suffocation on the Erebos from chapter 4 (act 1)? i don't believe so. the suffocation is a bookend to the Upon Coherence letter scene with Ianthe, and there isn't even any scene break in the chapter to indicate shifting time between Ianthe's exit and Harrow's subsequent discovery of the fingernails she embedded in the wall in her attempt to defend herself against her attacker, mid-suffocation.

every other timeline clarifier in htn (of which there are nine remaining) makes sense and follows the narrative both chronologically and linearly - apart from the subheading of chapter 45 (act 5):

chapter 45 (act 5) is the River bubble scene where Harrow and Ortus rehash their guilt to each other, and Abigail announces her intention to exorcise Wake's revenant from the bubble. the subheading is vague where no other heading has been, stating only "an amount of time", despite the chapter preceding this one linearly (chapter 43, act 5) having this subheading:

logically, there should be very little time passing between the scene where Harrow comes to fully inside the bubble and sees it for what it is, and reuniting with Ortus properly. the only connection I can see between chapter 19 and chapter 45's discrepancie's is that both chapters make use of the Second House crest, 19's in reference to G1deon being the one to attack Harrow, and 45's no doubt being in reference to Harrow's realisation of G1deon's real name and the as yet unconfirmed connection he has to Gideon herself.

so, what's the fucking deal then? is it a woeful editing mistake? is it a cipher of some kind? is it a product of Harrow's canonical schizophrenia? I certainly don't know, but it's bothering me so much, and I just had to make sure I wasn't making it up in my head. anyway. woe, conspiracy theories on a book published three years ago that likely someone has already talked about be upon ye. whatever.

ive been thinking a lot about how john telling harrow he wishes she was his daughter is so blatantly creepy, both on the intertextual Lolita level and b/c the other two people who he calls his children (a&m)...are people who he's in sexual relationships with . idk, it just drives me crazy that people don't see it.

YEPPP!!! john has notably...fluid definitions of family relationships; thinking especially about pg 491 of harrow where he calls augustine "my son—my brother—beloved". it also strikes me that harrow tells her he wishes she'd been his daughter right after he says, "in a very real way, you and the others are A.L.'s children." this makes the scene take on extra sinister tones to me considering that he's positioning himself as the "father" to alecto's "mother," even though his relationship to alecto is founded on his murder and subsequent violation of her. and then of course in ntn harrow is paralleled explicitly with alecto. i guess i can understand people thinking that john is genuinely being fatherly on a first read-through, but by the time you understand that he's also spent all of htn wanting g1deon to "kill or fix harrow" and certainly by the time you get through ntn, i think it should be pretty obvious that his intentions toward her are not on any level well-meaning.

ohhh we’re one week away from the Emperor’s murder now!! things are heating up

‘Ortus’ the First’s callsign is G.P.!!!! not O.P.!! and though Harrow knows that the initials represent the two names, she doesn’t filter it out because its not the full name ‘Ortus’!

also, the Emperor’s callsign is ‘J.G’ for John Gaius, but i hadn’t previously considered that the ‘Gaius’ name might be connected the double naming with the Lyctor practice of using the cav’s name as well

and the Resurrection Beast is coming, how very ominous. what’s even more ominous though is the Locked Tomb Body’s reaction to it, she seems excited and knows it, which doesn’t feel good. i don’t think she’s a monster like the Emperor claims, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s good either

wow Harrow’s devotion to the Body is also something, and very much onesided. she assumes that the Body leaving means she’s done something wrong, transgressed somehow

hmm, the ‘barathron’ and ‘bathyrhoic’ are the first things i can think of that have a reference to ‘ba’ in their names, like ‘Ortus’ was beginning to say earlier, but i also feel like that doesn’t necessarily fit in the context of whatever he was talking about?

‘as we speak languishing in Hell!’ well i was wrong they do actually have a concept of Hell here

i feel like it can’t be as obvious as the traitor being one of the other Lyctors, i don’t trust these books aren’t gonna give some blindsiding twist lol.

i feel like it for sure won’t be Ianthe though, since not only is she the overly obvious suspect with Corona being with the BoE, but i don’t think she would necessarily even turn traitor for Corona, being a Lyctor is too important to her. i feel like as long as Corona’s not actually being hurt, Ianthe will prioritise her Lyctor role over her. plus Ianthe had her own agenda & reveal last time, idk if it would happen again

waiiit i just had a thought - given Harrow’s completely forgotten why she wrote the letters at all… could she have been the traitor and then forgotten it? but i don’t think that’s all that likely either

love the way the Emperor just responds to half of what people say with ‘thanks’, its so mundane

‘each Beast is quite unlike the other’ ‘it was a humanoid creature with a beautiful voice that held me under the water’ no mention of the ninth RB here, i can’t remember if its fate has already been mentioned, but if they can look almost like humans, could the Ninth beast be the Locked Tomb body thats been talking to Harrow?

I'm not sure if I'm an outlier here, but the sand wrestling bit in episode 5 is just heartbreaking. That "my commanding officer has some idea that you and I are similar ... I wonder if it's something more or not" is so painful. Paddy is deperately trying to find someone who understands him, who he can connect with. He's clawing so furiously at the walls of the grief and reality of his loneliness, he just wants someone who gets him, is broken like him, can see and understand his pain... and Augustin is not that man.

But the lengths Paddy will go to in order to discover that. He's desperate.

In the mess that evening, the hope is gone again. Eoin was the only one who understood Paddy the way he's depserateto have again.

So okay the jester has never seen the knight take his helmet off & potentially doesn’t know his real name? Idk if you said. But okay maybe he saw the knight in regular clothes a couple of times & just didn’t recognize him?

So like I’m imagining the jester being really attracted to this random guy that he’s seen once or twice around the castle & he’s feeling angsty one day because the knight won’t flirt back with him so he asks around about the mysterious man with the long hair thinking maybe he can rebound & distract himself from the knight, but no one seems to know who he’s talking about… so now he’s even more bummed because *neither* of the guys he likes are attainable. Fast forward to him catching sight of this mysterious man in a corridor one night, dressed in regular clothes of course, walking out towards the stables with a bunch of carrots.

Queue the Jester (who’s maybe slightly drunk - it’s a weekend, it’s fine) taking off running after the man & being like “Hey, I’ve been looking for you!”

Augustine immediately panics and freezes in place because how did the jester recognize him?? But the jester catches up to him and keeps talking as if nothing is strange.

“I’ve seen you around before, but I never got your name,” the jester says, and Augustine relaxes slightly, realizing that the jester doesn’t seem to recognize him.

“I’m not around the castle very often,” he says, trying to pull away and disappear off somewhere to put his armor back on so he can avoid a surprise reveal of his identity if the jester recognizes his voice or something.

But the jester is totally oblivious to the knight’s anxieties, and follows him out to the stables, flirting clumsily and asking question after question which the knight does his best to dodge.

After that night, it becomes kind of a Thing. The jester pesters the knight both in his helmet and out of it, with seemingly no idea that they’re the same person. Cut to one afternoon, the jester is watching Augustine feed the horses in the stables, and he seems considerably less jolly than usual, so despite his best instincts, Augustine asks him what’s wrong.

“Nothing,” the Jester says, shaking his head.

“Really?” Augustine asks, genuinely growing concerned at the jester’s melancholy.

“Well,” the jester says, hesitating. “Actually, you know that really tall knight? Captain of the guard?”

Augustine freezes, but forces himself to nod.

“I’ve been trying to get his attention for months now,” the jester says. “But I think it might be time to give it up.”

Augustine pauses for a moment, mind stalling. “No,” he says quickly. “Why?”

“He’s so serious, half the time, I can’t tell if I’m annoying him or charming him,” the jester says regretfully. “I’ve never even seen him out of his helmet.”

“Oh,” Augustine says.

“Honestly, I started flirting with you to get over him,” the jester confesses.

Augustine clears his throat, cheeks burning. “Is it working?” he asks.

The jester smiles. “Nah, not exactly. I mean, you’re lovely, but I’m afraid I’m still rather hung up on that knight.”

Augustine meets the Jester’s two-toned eyes, flushing as the jester’s grin spreads across his face.

“But I’d still go for a roll in the hay anytime you like,” the Jester adds, and Augustine nearly chokes on air.

“Sorry,” he says, coughing, face burning under the Jester’s gaze.

“Don’t stop breathing, I was only joking,” the jester says devilishly. “Anyway, I’d better get back inside.”

“Right,” Augustine says.

The jester stares at him for a moment longer.

“You’re a really good listener,” he says, and for once, all traces of joking seem to have left him.

Queue the Jester spiraling about his rapidly-growing infatuation with this random man, which is now competing with his enduring affection for the knight.

And Augustine feels really bad that the Jester was sad about him, so he starts flirting with him more in his armor, complicating things even further.

😂 I got carried away & I didn’t proofread this but do you get my vision?

OMG YES THIS IS SO FREAKING CUTE. Jester would def know Augustine’s name but as long as at the stable he was careful not to reveal his name or gave him a pseudonym/nickname to call him by then it could work. Poor Jester would have very complicated feelings about the same man. He thinks he’s caught up in a love triangle but it’s just the same guy 😂

Mercy is even angrier. She was betrayed; the possibility of revenge was taken from her; even her death was taken from her. She dipped her soul into the River for a hot second and it wasn't pleasant. She's hurt, she's thirsty for revenge, she wants to claw John's eyes out and eat his liver. The caveat is that dying and being shoved back in has unmade something within her. Her eyes are a different colour. Whatever was left of Cristabel's soul inside her slipped away. She's not a Lyctor anymore.

ngl this is just an excuse to prompt an existential crisis in someone who's been immortal for millennia, and hated it, or thought she did, but now that she's mortal again she's ???? sort of coming to terms with that. How does it feel to be just a human. I'm also always hinking about Mercy calling Gideon an abomination and I think they should have a conversation about that

this is ALSO an excuse to somehow end up with Mercymorn on the Ninth while the River demons attack. Maybe Phrrya spirited her out of the Mithraeum and she ended up there somehow. IDk. But it's very important to be that Mercymorn is there when the Tomb opens

ANYWAY, here is where ortus 1...

wait, this is going to be confusing

I want to call ortus from the ninth "ortus 1" and the new guy "ortus 2"

because ninth ortus was the first to show up

but new ortus is actually older and also is ortus the first

we're gonna go with ortus and lyctor!ortus, for now

so, as I was saying, this is were ortus starts becoming much more insistent in these "flashbacks" about him not being the right choice

which, he's not wrong

we know he's not wrong

and harrow is saying stuff like "unless you can summon matthias nonius" (matthias nonius is becoming a recurrent thing, let's remember harrow compared gideon to him at one point)

and ortus goes "I don't understand why you chose me" to which harrow says "there was nobody else" and ortus exasperatedly says "you never did posses an imagination"

VERY IMPORTANT THING

a skeleton turns around when they're walking and says "is this how it happens?"

there's some conversation about first and second generations and about not!dulcinea being chosen, and Emperor Johnny Bravo says "we were all there to meet her, all sixteen of us"

apparently, not!dulcinea was the most reluctant to slurp her cavalier, but that didn't stop any of them, not even her, so

Emperor Johnny Quest says "for god's sake" and harrow thinks "the god who became a man and yet still invoked himself, apparently"

I have to respect augustine a little bit because he asked "which one of the kiddies did her in?" and I thought that was hilarious

he is called the saint of patience, which makes my previous comment about them being named via sarcasm very correct

it's like captain planet or the power rangers but chosen as funnily as possible

they start summoning lyctor!ortus by saying that he's interested in "you-know-what", which is both suspicious and childish and the vibes of these lyctors are all over the place

augustine thinks something's wrong, which is an understatement at this point, but ok

lyctor!ortus comes in as if summoned by the gossip and harrow calls him "the next terrible part of your life" which is saying something

lyctor!ortus comes with news of the seventh beast or whatnot that's trailing them

harrow bleeds from her ears and smashes her head on the next available surface to pass out

the mood

who could blame her

this lyctor job is terrible

it's like the end of drop dead gorgeous and harrow is kristen dunst

I'm not explaining that, in case you haven't watched a classic

we are back to the "flashbacks" and we've got a special appearance from the fifth

they say they prefer to look into books than going downstairs, which is something one would consider if one had known what the fuck was downstairs from the start

abigail also does sound effects like mercygirl, it's catching on

abigail finds a piece of a recipe note that mentions an M and a Nigella

we know nigella is the cav of cassiopeia, the ceramics collector

I remember nigella's name because of the cook, which makes it funnier that it's a recipe

abigail also gives harrow a note

abigail says that she'd like to summon the ghost of a lyctor but she's not sure how that could work or where they go when they die

ortus, magnus and abigail, in this gideonless version, are a polycule

or is it her trying to hide it?

was there actually a longer period of time between the defeat of not!dulcinea and the emperor Jon Arbuckle coming to pick them up?

a period of time in which harrow learned things that made her write those letters?

and in which something happened regarding gideon?

is the note of the implantation also related?

why was gideon born in space?

of course I'm not asking you, please don't spoil anything, I'm just asking the void of desperation and chaos right now
