About that thing re "trans men dont know what its like to be seen as predatory", I feel like everyone in the lgbt community generally agrees lesbians are treated as predatory by str8 women, gay men are treated as predatory by str8 men, I (as a trans man) used to think I was a lesbian and went throught life as one. Accordingly I was treated like I am predatory. I am now a gay men, and accordingly I am treated as predatory. On top of that, cis gay men treat me as predatory (scawy transes trying to get them to have sex w a vageenay boohoo) and women treat me as predatory every time I open my mouth about sharing some of their experiences (because me needing iuds at the obgyn inherently means I, as a man, inavde their man-free space). Literally all queer people are constantly treated as predatory by cishet society at large, everyone knows it and keeps saying it and is talking about it because its no secret and everyone is aware of it.

But the second the convo turns to how terfs hurt trans men? Suddenly, we have no idea what its like to be treated as predatory and suddenly the world sees trans men specifcially as helpless little girly victims.

And honestly? Even if it were the case that trans men and transmasculine* people were solely infantilized... it's still harmful. I was initially bringing up that because it's like... I guess the only narrative people want to hear about our suffering, I guess, because it's easier to digest. It's easier to look at it and write it off as, "well you're just infantilized, show me a real problem," and that's the issue - it's twofold. It is simultaneously the need to relegate the experiences of a diverse community into one box and then say, "well, it's just infantilization, who cares when [x] issue is more dangerous" afterward.

It is frustrating, at best, to not be heard. And I've found that so many people aren't just infantilized... I think a lot of queer people are, I don't think it's unique to us. However, people are almost surprised when trans men and transmasculine* people open up more, in my experience.

It's definitely more complex to include more trans experiences with transphobia and the intersections of things like rascism, homophobia, antisemitism, islamophobia, misogyny, ableism... but it is still important. In fact, it often informs in addition to how trans people are treated. Transphobia doesn't exist in a vacuum, and it often doesn't exist alone. That is why we need to have these complex discussions.

5. What is the perfect environment for you to write in?

Honestly, anywhere. I'm almost always writing. I use the dabble app to write in so I can write from both my computer and my phone and it uploads everything, and seriously it's perfect because I'm almost always writing in my head so I can always jot down an idea. I write in the passenger seat of a car, I write in my break room at work, I write in cafes, I write while I'm waiting for appointments, I write at the supermarket, I write when I'm walking to the corner store, I write in front of my stove and at my dining room table and in my office and on my couch and in the bathroom and in my bed. I've written while I was getting dinner with friends and while I was sitting through trailers at the movies and while I was waiting for a concert to start. My fics are basically like stim toys to me? I'm always writing.

My favorite place to write is probably my couch, though. Some music playing, stupid late at night, with a cup of tea.

OKAY IT'S AN IDENTITY PORN LOVE SQUARE JAYTIM!! BUT NOT THE OTHER ONE I'VE TALKED ABOUT BC I HAD TWO IDEAS AT THE SAME TIME!!!

okay SO in this one, Jason (who's fully detached from the batfam and in this, his identity was never revealed) and Tim meet at college as students and start dating (mostly bc Bruce was on Tim's ass about dating since he deserves a life outside of work/school/red robin but also partially because he thought it'd be nice to hookup with Jason, he's gorgeous after all) and it goes pretty well, but like ALWAYS w Tim he can't keep up the relationship and his day and night jobs at the same time, and eventually Jason tells him after Tim tries to leave on ANOTHER date that if he has to go, he can go, but he can either tell him what's really going on, or he can't come back.

So Tim doesn't come back.

And then he starts hooking up with Red Hood!! because they have insane chemistry and UST and Tim is pent up after losing his best sexual partner ever and Red Hood starts hitting on him and he's such an asshole and OOPS! And then they start hooking up more, but never at someone's place, etc. etc.

At some point or another Jason ends up in trouble (out of the Red Hood helmet, he's just out as Jason at the college and he doesn't have a helmet or guns on him) and RR helps him out, but Jason ends up helping as Jason, and then Jason wants to go look for Tim and RR has to stop him, which is also weird because Jason has been refusing to even look at Tim so he's surprised that Jason still cares? Like, Tim is his first thought after the fight is over? What?

Anyways after that, the next time Red Robin is out he gets caught in the crossfire with Hood and he gets knocked out, and then Hood takes him back to his safehouse and doesn't take off his mask bc he's respectful, but RR wakes up and realizes that the apartment is Jason's and remembers how well he handled the situation at the school and he realizes that Jason is Red Hood and shitshitshitshitshit that's his ex-boyfriend and also his current fuckbuddy, he can't even call them fwb because they aren't friends-

An assassin marries an immortal sorceress and allows the rumors that he murdered her to flourish once she disappears...

A world-hopping adventurer sees the potential in all of them and asks if they're interested in helping make the world a better place.

"Empty Names" is an episodic urban fantasy series about a group of misfits fighting monsters and grappling with existential questions regarding the interplay of reality, perception, and identity.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Summary: Road, an adventurer with a penchant for jumping between different worlds tries to set up the sort of adventurers' guild so common in sword & sorcery setting in a modern day urban fantasy world where "adventurer" isn't considered a legitimate profession and magic and the supernatural are kept behind the scenes and out of public knowledge. The story is told from the points of view of the people that get roped into being the initial test run adventuring party but never Road's.

Update Schedule: Once or twice a month, depending on chapter length. New chapters get posted on Saturdays, when they're ready.

Overall Content Warnings: Genre-typical violence, gender dysphoria, anxiety, occasional mild body horror, death. I'll update this list as more is written and if anyone points something out to me that I should have included a warning for and missed. In general though, I aim to try to keep this approximately PG-13-ish, but we'll see where this all goes over time. Individual chapters have more specific content warnings at the top of the post with anything likely to be distressing below the "Keep reading" line.

Current Status: Rough Draft (just throwing things up as I write them with minimal review or editing)

I'm primarily viewing this project as practice for moving out of my comfort zone and doing more traditional prose with proper dialogue and action scenes and such rather than the journal format that I've been doing with @thearchivistsjournal. The original plan was to write a few sort of prologue/character introduction chapters and then mostly do a series of one-shots with the same setting and cast based on whatever random idea or writing prompt strikes my fancy that week, but as time goes on it's starting to verge more toward "continuous narrative". 2023 Pride Month Drabble Challenge: A series of dialogue snippets from an alternate universe/timeline where Eris and Lacuna avoided ever learning about the existence of the supernatural, wound up meeting anyway, and became a couple instead of (or perhaps in addition to) best friends.

Married for power and money and is using that money to bankroll this adventurers' guild startup operation. May or may not have killed his wife.

Kind of an asshole, but reins it in when Road's around for their sake.

Lacuna:

A trans woman whose introduction to the existence of the supernatural was a failed attempt to magically get a new body that resulted in a demon trying to eat her, and then being rescued by Road.

Now works with an unholy combination of applying AI-generated art algorithms and principles to create custom magic glyphs.

A walking embodiment of imposter syndrome, who vacillates between "I am a mad genius!" and "I have no idea what I'm doing and really am not qualified for any of this."

Humor/Color Scheme: Melancholic

Eris:

The team's physical powerhouse and heavy hitter. A veritable brick wall of supernaturally-reinforced muscle.

Survived a scenario out of a C-list monster movie as a teenager, enjoyed the experience more than she reasonably should have, and has spent the past decade since then as a semi-professional monster hunter.

Has sort of taken Lacuna under her wing as the younger sister she never had but always wanted. In spite of Lacuna being the older of the two.

Humor/Color Scheme: Sanguine

Ashan Glassheart:

Already went through the whole "little kid from Earth goes on an adventure in a magic otherworld and becomes a wizard" hero's journey/bildungsroman routine before this story even started. Except he was gone long enough that once he finally returned home there wasn't anything to come back to. Does a convincing job of pretending it doesn't bother him.

Mostly focuses on barriers, wards, bindings, and other such defensive techniques with his magic.

Actually doesn't mind all that much when strangers mistake him for a woman. Minds a little bit though when people call his wizard robes a dress. Minds a lot when people mistake his outfit for cosplay.

Humor/Color Scheme: Phlegmatic

it’s funny that palahniuk is a little woman hating considering he knows so much about feminism. he brings up ariel levy (feminist author) in one of his books and has a very dark short story called speaking bitterness about radfems sexually assaulting a woman they believe to be trans. just the way it’s written it’s brutal and he def knows a lot about women’s issues it’s just not always written in the best way

Yeah in the Peteryan essay I wanted to quote from a lot of their biggest influences because they're pretty misogynistic. And there's this quote in Choke about how women secretly want to be oppressed by men and their entire identity depends on it. And the book is satirical and I didn't want to include it in bad faith if it was like making fun of this idea, so I was like looking into his viewpoints or whatever

And two of his newest books are like, one is apparently about how women get enslaved by men and then the men can't dress themselves or cook and the other one is about like a feminist that secretly loves romance novels and she gets raped in public in the opening scene and then this like billionaire kidnaps her for sex to sell his sex toys that like make women want to be tortured to death or something and it's like satirizing 50 Shades and Twilight and like dark romance novels or whatever. Anyway all the reviews were saying it was just terrible

I didn't read these so maybe it's like bad for me to point fingers at it but the second one had horrible reviews and then I looked up like what he's said and he was like justifying it by saying that like third wave feminism was bad and had gone too far and is just about women wanting to have their tits out and bringing up the schizophrenic woman who shot Andy Warhol as like an example of feminism going too far. And like first of all that woman had very, very serious mental issues so pick a better example and secondly that happened in 1968 which was over 20 years before third wave feminism and thirdly we have just lost Roe so clearly feminism has less teeth than it did 50 years ago. Grow up

And like I get there's harmful things about these books and there's definitely valid criticisms to be made but like first of all Twilight is like a very Mormon book and large portions of the US are deeply religious or were at least raised deeply religious. And I think a lot of people who are not raised with that kind of belief system just cannot compute it which is fair but part of why those books gripped the nation is because a large portion of women are raised with the belief system that dating and enjoying sex is the worst thing you can do and that it should hurt and be bad and decreases your value as a person to the point where it is very difficult for many women to come or enjoy penetration

And part of why books like Twilight got so popular and like gripped the nation is because there's elements of the story that reduce that sense of guilt by decreasing the girl's ability to like be chaste and leave and never talk to the guy again like they're "supposed to", and every romance novel across hundreds of years from like before Jane Eyre to Sold to One Direction fanfiction is like a widespread phenomenon that contains a lot of the exact same beats because of this

And like you can definitely still satirize those things or criticize them or argue that mass production and exposure to that content is harmful, and personally I think 50 Shades is written very weird and not hot and parts of Twilight like with Rosacoeleene or whatever the fuck her name is are extremely strange.

But Survivor feels so raw in it's depiction of that exact concept regarding being unable to enjoy sex due to religious trauma and how the narrator is obsessed with sex but struggles to be able to have sex because of the cult he was raised in it's just so weird to me that this book is such a hard pivot on that and doesn't seem to think about it or try to understand what it's satirizing at all and the big takeaway is supposed to be that like "regular women with jobs that identify as third wave feminists that want careers and read romance novels aren't REAL feminists and secretly want to be raped" like get a grip dude

I understand that there's another level with like religion and gay sex which is alluded to being what the straight romance is actually about in Survivor but I guess maybe he didn't bother to think about the romance books he was satirizing or like empathize with the idea that women can feel similar things

And also it just pisses me off because it never goes both ways, like with the exception of Pretty Tied Up by Guns N Roses almost every single classic rock song about bondage is about a dominatrix but nobody EVER would seriously make the claim that like ACDC or Van Halen or whatever are closet misandrists because that's just fucking ludicrous but even left-leaning people are so quick to act like being into mild spanking and choking with someone you trust is like the end all gotcha of feminist politics. Like probably at least a slight majority of people fantasize about that sort of thing because they want to be the center of attention and object of desire and don't want to do any work lol

ANYWAY TO CONCLUDE I feel like when Choke came out you could argue the women want to be oppressed line was satirizing masculinity and misogyny like he does in Fight Club but the later books he wrote just like..... make it seem like that line was actually written in bad faith lol

theres something so much more personal and individual when it comes to gender identity and being transgender that you cant just observe a person's (a youtuber's) behavior and read them as transgender, even if only in regards of the character that theyre roleplaying, because even if you separate the character from the content creator, all of their actions are a reflection of them in the real world. its not the same practice as observing interactions and relationships and reading them as romantic because in real life theres so much of an overlap between platonic and romantic relationships that as long as youre being respectful to the creators behind the videos, its no big deal to say something someone did was gay or what have you. we all know theyre not really (except for the ones that are gay of course but we all know most of the popular ships are between two straight married men), and thats okay. as annoying as shipping culture can be in fandom spaces, thats just an expected thing to happen when something has a fanbase. its that simple

I'm gonna explain a thing real quick, because I've never really talked about it: the reason I'm not out as trans anywhere but here.

So. First of all, my parents are not really dangerous. If I came out to them, I would be under no physical threat from them. However. They have already done irreparable damage to my desire to come out as trans.

Those who have been here a while may remember a couple years ago when my efforts to come out as bisexual were completely stopped. This was a few months after I had come out to my dad, and about a year after I came out to my mom. When I told my dad, I also came out to both of them as asexual. It went decently, there was some explaining to do, but they took it without too much fuss.

Fast forward a few months, and my dad is over to help me wire internet to my computer in my second apartment. We start talking, and he mentions that he doesn't believe that neither bisexuality nor asexuality even exist. He's convinced I just haven't chosen which gender I'm attracted to, and during this conversation, this sentence came up: "...and when you decide to have sex..." (Pointed look at me) "WHEN you decide to have sex, you will have chosen which gender."

That one sentence told me that he thinks I'm just in some strange limbo state. He doesn't believe in two of the most significant pieces of my identity.

My mom has a different approach. She has never directly said anything about me, but has suddenly started saying stuff like "Why does your generation insist on labeling everything? I don't get it. Why does everything have labels? Just be the best you that you can be!" Any time I try to explain it, she just stops listening.

I also have a cousin who is trans. We never really see that side of the family. I don't even remember the cousin in question. But my mom has stated on MANY different occasions "I don't get it. He-SHE says that she was 'suffocated by her gender'. What does that even mean?" And then won't listen to me trying to explain that. My dad has said (in that same conversation from earlier) that "a person's gender is determined by the chemicals in their body. I won't call someone by the other pronouns unless they have changed the chemicals in their body." I.E. he will knowingly misgender someone until they have started HRT and are probably showing the effects.

So, my parents are not very supportive where it counts. My sister has accidentally outed me to her coworkers, and I have no reason to believe she won't do it again.

My friends are slightly different. One of my best friends is a lesbian, and was the first person I told that I was bisexual. She took it very well, and has even provided me with my pride flag. She hasnt stated anything against or for trans people, so she is probably the person I would tell first.

My best friend of all time, and my ex-roommate, took me being bi/ace rather well, and has even talked about his own sexuality with me. However, what small bits he's talked about regarding trans people was neutral, but leaning a bit negatively. It was in a biased conversation, so I can't say for sure, however. The last friend I don't know nearly as well, and have not come out as anything to him.

And that's it for my closest friends and family. Both sides of my extended family are VERY Mormon, and I can't guarantee a good reaction from any of them.

I have come out to some work friends, but only after I found out that they were already in the LGBT community.

So, long story short, I haven't come out as trans, and have no plans to do so, because I just can't take the rejection I foresee if I do come out. I could potentially lose everyone close to me in one way or another. I can't take that. It already hurt more than it should when my parents just ignored my sexuality like that, and out of my friends, only one of them made a positive impression. Gender identity is a lot more controversial, and I can't guarantee any positive reaction to me being trans.

Many tailors hated her until she met a stubborn solarian seamstress with light magic and similar ability, that's where her love for textiles and colors was born.
