hi, i ireally love your work and i don't know if you've answered this before but, what kinds of studies do you do or how did you learn color theory? i wanna get better at rendering and anatomy but im having trouble TT TT

Hi! Long answer alert. Once a chatterbox, always a chatterbox.

When I started actively learning how to draw about 10 1/2 years ago, I exclusively did graphite studies in sketchbooks. Here's a few examples—I mostly stuck to doing line drawings to drill basic shapes/contours and proportions into my brain. The more rendered sketches helped me practice edge control & basic values, and they were REALLY good for learning the actual 3D structure behind what I was drawing.

I'd use reference images that I grabbed from fitness forums, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, and some NSFW places, but you could find adequate ref material from figure drawing sites like Line of Action. LoA has refs for people (you can filter by clothed/unclothed, age, & gender), animals, expressions, hands/feet, and a few other useful things as well. Love them.

Learning how to render digitally was a similar story; it helped a lot that I had a pretty strong foundation for value/anatomy going in. I basically didn't touch color at all for ~2 years (except for a few attempts at bad digital or acrylic paint studies), which may not have been the best idea. I learned color from a lot of trial and error, honestly, and I'm pretty sure this process involved a lot of imitation—there were a number of digital/traditional painters whose styles I really wanted to emulate (notably their edge control, color choices, value distributions, and shape design), so I kiiind of did a mixture of that + my own experimentation.

For example, I really found Benjamin Björklund's style appealing, especially his softened/lost edges & vibrant pops of saturated color, so here's a study I did from some photograph that I'm *pretty* sure was painted with him in mind.

Learning how to detail was definitely a slow process, and like all the aforementioned things (anatomy/color/edge control/values/etc.) I'm still figuring it out. Focusing on edge control first (that is, deciding on where to place hard/soft edges for emphasizing/de-emphasizing certain areas of the image) is super useful, because you can honestly fool a viewer into thinking there's more detail in a piece than there actually is if you're very economical about where you place your hard edges.

The most important part, to me, is probably just doing this stuff over and over again. You're likely not going to see improvement in a few weeks or even a few months, so don't fret about not getting the exact results you want and just keep studying + making art. I like to think about learning art as a process where you *need* to fail and make crappy art/studies—there's literally no way around it—so you might as well fail right now. See, by making bad art you're actually moving forward—isn't that a fun prospect!!

It's useful to have a folder with art you admire, especially if you can dissect the pieces and understand why you like them so much. You can study those aspects (like, you can redraw or repaint that person's work) and break down whether this is art that you just like to look at, or if it's the kind of art that you want to *make.* There's a LOT of art out there that I love looking at, probably tens of thousands of styles/mediums, but there's a very narrow range that I want to make myself.

I've mentioned it in some ask reply in the past, but I really do think looking at other artist's work is such a cheat code for improving your own skills—the other artist does the work to filter reality/ideas for you, and this sort of allows you to contact the subject matter more directly. I can think of so many examples where an artist I admired exaggerated, like, the way sunlight rested on a face and created that orange fringe around its edge, or the greys/dull blues in a wheat field, or the bright indigo in a cast shadow, or the red along the outside of a person's eye, and it just clicked for me that this was a very available & observable aspect of reality, which had up until that point gone completely unnoticed! If you're really perceptive about the art you look at, it's shocking how much it can teach you about how to see the world (in this particular case I mean this literally, in that the art I looked at fully changed the way I visually processed the world, but of course it has had a strong effect on my worldviews/relationships/beliefs).

during this time he starts getting SO silly with it again in terms of like. presentation and stuff. having fun and playing. hair is getting FULLY dyed again. bringing back some of the piercings. got little pins on the jacket now. having so much fun

in general is just a lot more confident in how they express themself and it brings me so much joy

the cane comes back out occasionally when shes having a particularly bad day and needs to use it again. its got a tiny little bit of decorations now :)

super random thought but i can’t stop thinking about shane threatening someone who tried to be a lil too touchy with you by pointing his gun at them saying “I’ll put you down like a dog if you try something like that again”

you were helping another group, out of the kindness of your hearts because there were women and children suffering amongst them — so you’d decided to help them on their travels. nothing more, nothing less. it was ricks idea of course, always the empath, and as imagined shane was hating every minute, especially when a guy a year or so older than you was getting just a little too chatty with you.

honestly, shane understood. you were beautiful, and judging by what the group had been saying it had been a long time since they’d seen anyone else, let alone a pretty girl. as the large conjoined group walk together through the woods, shane keeps watch, a good few paces back behind everyone, gun in his grip, mouth turned down, sour about the whole thing. he knows he’s meant to be keeping watch for everyone’s safety, but he’s distracted. distracted by the sound of your laugh that he could tell was just you being polite. distracted by the sight of his arm brushing yours as you walked side by side. distracted by the fact he was a little more age appropriate for you.

shane speeds up his pace a little in order to be able to hear the conversation taking place.

“i guess what im saying is you’re lucky to be a pretty girl in a world like this. you can take your pick from pretty much anyone you want. ain’t no one gonna say no.” the guy shrugs, his arm brushing yours once more. shane clenches his jaw, watching the way you get awkward for a moment as you stare ahead.

“not sure i see it that way. just creates more danger. thank you, though.” don’t thank the bastard — shane thinks. he doesn’t deserve it.

“yeah, i know that, i guess—” the guy dismisses, unphased by your closed off tone. “but you gotta enjoy the mundane pleasures, you know? things like dating around, messin’ about… could make life more fun.” he smirks suggestively. shane watches as his arm snakes around your waist. “i could show you how to have fun.”

“not interested.” you clip, quickly, body language tight and uncomfortable as you shake his hand off you and step away.

“you don’t scream or draw attention to yourself you hear me?” his deep voice grumbles as the group travel up ahead, almost losing the two of them through the trees. the boy doesn’t dare turn around, frozen in fear as he nods.

“we did a nice thing letting you travel with us — you agree with that, kid?” shane asks, eyes up ahead as he watches the groups disappear into the treeline.

“y—yes— we’re very grateful for your hospi—”

I loved the mini series it was a nice break from the post Jess was making at the time ( a lot of myst content ) but also it was just super cool?? Laurances get fed up with her comment but he does think about that comment a lot even though he knows she knows nothing about his life .

Laurance when he talks to Tommy can’t help but see Malachi weirdly enough

well time for like 1-2 more two time headcanons (at this point it isnt even headcanons its just me making an au and describing certain scenes)

first time two time got to learn what a hospital or doctors office was (via having to go to one) they did not have a fun experience

first ever doctors appointment two time has to go to was eventful to say the least. since they had basically no medical history and no one knew if they had allergies or things already done

since two time lived in the cult (one that didnt interact with the outside world like at all) they were behind on things like vaccines. and so come the fateful day of two time learning they really dont like needles

elliot got to experience first hand what two time will do to get away from something they dont like (two time where did the knife come from your scaring us)

first time two time went to a hospital (this mf dont eat enough and almost died) they were not excited to say the least. this was one of the first times they interacted with the outside world

two time was brought there after elliot found them half dead in the woods. they were not happy with it in the slightest (they wanted to pay for their sins and finally join azure and be free from the eternal suffering that is living without him)

the hospital got the fun of finally getting two time in the system and learning they are, in fact, very violent when subjected to help with things they dont know of

the cult almost never used things like metals, usually using thorns and vines and making most things from clay and wood

metals were reserved for the elders, the people who were pure and never disobeyed the spawn even once. the metals were used as recognition for who the spawn deemed worthy

two time was going to be deemed worthy after killing azure, but no one knew where they went after finding azures body. they were in eternal torture (or as eternal as it gets since they escaped)

anyways thats all. uhhhhhhhhh someone make like any azuretime / pizzatime fanfic centering around two time and not being super angsty and i will personally become your maid

im desperate if you cant tell. while theres a bunch of azuretime fics theres like no pizzatime fics that center around two time. specifically angsty two time centric (not like super angsty like hurt no comfort i cant handle that</3)

Azul had been fascinated by the idea of soulmates as a young mer

it was something that gave him hope, that despite all the other mean mers who would make fun of him, there was someone out there who would understand him and love him

and so he kept drawing on his arm, doodles of shells and other fish that caught his eye

but there wasn't any response.

maybe his doodles were too ugly and his soulmate didn't like them?

and so he learned to draw better, drawing again and again, hoping he would get a response

but still not a single mark would appear on him

it had been a tough blow to him, but he eventually accepted that he didn't have a soulmate

if he was going to be alone for all his life, then he had to take care of himself (because nobody would)

he became super greedy and selfish, always prioritising himself and his materialistic needs

although he also had a friendship with the tweels, he really only befriended them because they could help him out (but he did get attached to them over time)

and so, he opened the mostro lounge and became the sly businessman that we all know

on the first day of his second year, as he was going over documents after closing the lounge, he felt a slight tingle in his hand

Azul's eyebrow rose in response to an unexpected sensation. A peculiar warmth, like a gentle caress, emanated from the back of his gloved hand. Intrigued, he swiftly removed his gloves, revealing smooth, pale skin. A gasp of astonishment escaped his lips as his eyes fell upon a minuscule masterpiece, a tiny, adorable octopus delicately inked in pen.

"Is this...real?" Azul murmured, his voice tinged with disbelief. A surge of hope surged through his entire being, dispelling the weight that had burdened him for far too long.

Favorite Tweek and Craig hcs??

oooo anon i had to take a moment to think abt this since i don’t share my own hcs at times !! it’s a long one eheh (i’ll try to hold back tho i would be here all day if i went on…i get too excited to yap !!!!) OKAY LETS START

TWEEK:

- on his looks ? despite how i draw him i feel like tweek would be painfully average looking guy (not as average and boring looking as craig ya feel me ?) he isn’t too good looking and mostly seen as unattractive (not to craig tho :3c)

- trans tweek that’s it (i have SO SO much more i could share on this hc and i really wanna tweak some details before i share it but i’m so shy cause i may have projected too much on him dhdhhd)

- i truly am a believer that tweek never drinks coffee ever again after he discovers he’s been drugged by his parents, he’d probs become more of a tea guy

- i feel like tweek wouldnt really have like a simple job (like cubicles or working for some company ya know ?) hed most likely be a piano tutor OR he gets to own his own bakery !!

- tweek in an effort to find every way to calm his mind and just be at peace with himself he most likely took up yoga to stretch all his stress away ! (to craig’s dismay since he’s dragged into almost EVERY session with tweek, he just can’t manage to stretch as good as tweek can and gives up halfway)

CRAIG:

- like i said abt tweek, craig is such an average looking guy too (tho is seen as more attractive but not super ultra handsome guy ya feel me ?) people are attracted to his looks and mysterious vibes until he starts talking (basically their illusion is shattered when he gives the usual middle finger)

- tucker genes are both a blessing and a curse: u get decent looks (laura) and great height (thomas) but it’s at the cost of: having intense hair growth on all ur body (laura) and male patterned baldness (thomas) (i guess tricia is saved from that last one…)

- ofc i’m an avid “craig is tall” believer cause really he’s that kid who can’t stop having insane growth spurts that by the time he’s 16 the lakers are hitting up his line they need him on their court !!! (or i guess denver nuggets..? since they live in colorado…nvm i’m not from america..)

- i know craig loving space and wanting to work for NASA is a big and well loved headcanon here (and i’m not hating btw !! it is fun !!) but i’m more of a craig thinks he wants to go to space until gets older and starts thinking how hard of a dream that is to acheive ya know and starts to lean more towards the STEM field in his studies he may not get to the stars but at least he can study them from the comfort of his home (and hey if u like craig being above 6’0 ft…NASA doesn’t recruit folks who are taller than 5’11 to be astronauts…true craig angst right there)

- craig being an avid guinea pig lover is amazing and i do think he sticks by it even when he’s old BUT !!! i do think he’d love to adopt a big fluffy dog in his future too ! reason ? none i just think it’d be cute teehee (practically begs tweek for it too…he later adopts a samoyed dog with him and names her nova)

IM SORRY if i didn’t include any nationality hcs cause i’m still thinking abt that (i do believe in craig being peruvian i’m just stuck thinking more on wether i put it on his moms side or not…and tweek well still working on that too TT)

A few months back, I asked if it was okay to write using Clora and Seb. Finished the work - thought I'd lost it on my hard drive and a virus scan located it.

Not sure if it's sad or happy, but the basic premise of it is Clora getting frustrated/upset at Sebastian and Sebastian comforting her, Sebastian getting upset at a predicament Clora's in and Clora comforting him, and them both getting frustrated/upset and having to comfort each other.

If you'd rather I didn't post it, that's fine too, but just wanted to test the waters and double check that you'd be okay with it if I gifted it to you via AO3, or see if you wanted a sneak peak of it before posting it.

@sunshine-goblin AAA THANK YOU!!! im honoured its your fav fanfic AND ALSO THE LONGEST YOUVE READ BAHAHAA fr, when you say its as long as four books in lotr it rly makes me realize how insane i am😃👍 aw IM GLAD I COULD INSPIRE YOU TO DRAW MORE AND WRITE AS WELL😭 I was curious so i creeped you and everyone go look at their HL blog @sunshines-legacy your MC is so cute and so is your art🥹💖 as for tips on writing a longfic and brainstorming and motivation and stuff, my motivation was my brainrot and unhappiness with the canon story/ending LMAOO, and looking at the story of the game and playing around with what i was unhappy with/what i WISHED could have happened instead, was a lot easier than just coming up with plotlines from scratch. but something i highly recommend is just OUTLINING and making a timeline, one of my fav parts of writing was just putting on some cafe ambience in the background and doing stream of conscious type word documents where id just barf ideas and then worry about making it pretty later....like look at how many versions of the same chapter i have BAHAHA or like different renditions bc i couldnt decide if id wanna keep a scene/what order, so id make a timeline and keep smoothing things out until i was happy with it and whatnot

brainstorming is defs my fav part of the process and the most helpful part to me. just getting a blank document and writing stuff you want to happen without worrying about how it connects to the story, and then a lot of the times as i was doing that id just keep going and it would kinda tie itself together/id come up with a solution as i was writing / once the ideas kept flowing. so basically : TIMELINES AND OUTLINES I VERY MUCH RECOMMEND, but very low pressure and barebones ones. for example, this is what my outlines/brainstorming look like

its honestly just me talking to myself LMAO, and a lot of the time ill interject and be like "OH YEAH AND THEN THIS CAN HAPPEN" as the ideas come while im writing BAHAHA. its a super fun process and honestly nothing feels better than just getting hit with that flash of inspo, and since its all very low effort theres no pressure to actually write well and its just a chill fun time AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR OWN PROCESS / WRITING💖💖💖it can be difficult but HOPE U HAVE FUN TOO💖💖

my friend has finally posted their game the Engine of Fortune and yall should go check it out!! ive been in a ton of games that used it n its super fun, the character creation prompts always create the freakiest little guys

putting the link here n then below the cut im gonna talk abt one of my favorite guys from an Engine of Fortune game

so all characters in the Engine of Fortune are made up of two parts: identity and inventory. when you lose a card draw you have to cross off one of these parts. inventory usually goes first, cause identity is a rough thing to lose.

you'll notice the inventory is crossed off. well :3 he pissed off an angel and it liquefied all the organs he was carrying around in his... pockets... (magic pockets). meaning he lost his bits and his trenchcoat in one go. truly tragic. took his hat off in sorrow and never put it on again.

dont worry tho :3 he helped to trap the big bad (vampire) and escaped with the remaining 2/5ths of his polycule. truly a win

i was doing a frankenstein thing here - this game had an emphasis on lineage and bloodlines, so i figured i gotta make a guy whos looking to mess up that whole system. we never found out if he succeeded 😔 rip to a real one i hope u and ur (male)wife and ur jester are doing well

how i see "The helper" episode . (i have diagnosed adhd and autism fyi: everyone is different so take what i say with that context <3 not all autistic people are like me so please understand this is more based on my experience personally)

Really weird post i know but hear me out. When i watch "The helper " i immediatly think about having meltdowns as a little kid or just any age in general wether online or irl.

^ Like if you`re looking at it like i am, you can understand why id say it feels like hes having a meltdown / breakdown because something that makes sense to him most of the time, now makes no sense at all to him / freaks him out |

| (Being unable to help people because they do not need his help which he is not used to , thus making him react way worse then most people would sense it is something very special to him Like how people will have specific special intrests or hyperfixations etc) personally i freak out and get meltdowns when my pc is broken or needs fixed and i cannot draw whatsoever for long peroids of time. )

and how you / i would immediatly feel ashamed , nervous and guilty afterwards , or just generally exhausted or depending on the person feel like a burden on the people around you.

(also for this next part yes i know this is implied to be sylvia`s idea but it still makes me wanna tear up because it hits home way too hard) and other people will immediatly treat you as a "trouble maker" that has to be dealt with , punished or pushed aside even tho its something you cant help and sometimes cant even understand .

the dialogue espeically is a gut punch for me.

"ohh.. So this is the guy you want out of town "

" i get it " he`s hurt , and ashamed of himself. and its probably a stretch but i feel like this has happened before because of how he says " i get it . " then he tries to turn it into a positive as per usual to his character writing , thats how much he loves helping people.

its his special intrest / hyperfixation <3333 so of course he can try to turn it into something fun . and the rest of the episode goes on as he Does what they asked him to. and they immediately reward him for throwing himself out of their way .

(this genuinely makes me so mad i`m sorry fuck those towns people man you could`ve just talked to him instead GRAHHHH) and how he gets super happy after FINALLY pleasing them.

"that makes two of us " (BONUS) ALSO I WANT TO MENTION the scene where he tries to " stop " lord hater. I feel like this is him being pushed to his absolute limit to a point he tried to do something very out of character just for the comfort and relief of "doing something good" like hes reverting to the basics of "being a good guy " just to get that comfort of helping someone again.

it reminds me of that Version of himself in "the wanders" where the piece of himself that holds his trauma / what made him want to help everyone is still not inside of him yet, and he goes on a rant about how he is going to stop lord hater

"wander are you okay ?? " "im MORE then okay "

"IMMMM PERFECT !"

I had to get this out of my system because it was eating at my brain sorry yall 💔💔💔

i also think its interesting that the halo keeps track of this with like points or smth, not much to say about it i just think its an interesting gear; the ultimate defensive tech but it's based on how "good" you are thats just really interesting to me hehe

ALSO ALSO i think it's really really silly funny that raphael was this very intimidating and menacing figure that was super scary right up until the moment javier played dirty and then the moment that happened that image/vibe immediately crumbled WAHHAHA he's just a silly guy and the halo does the work i like him a lot
