hi, i hope you dont mind me asking this question! i often come across lists of reading recommendations for communists, and they are usually focused entirely on communist theory. which is important and im already on that, but i wonder if you also have recs for learning about history? especially the history of the soviet union, but also other past and present socialist states. i sometimes find myself reading theory and understanding the concepts in a vacuum, but with very little understanding of the historical context they were written in, if that makes any sense. and id like to get a basic grasp of the history of various socialist projects that isnt just the typical western "the ussr was evil!!!!" thing
Hi, historical context is indeed very important for works of theory, especially if it's more than a hundred years old. Lenin's What is to be Done, for example, is very conditioned by its historical context of Russia still being predominantly feudal, with only a timid appearance of the proletariat in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and therefore the very first trade unions, which he talks about. The understanding of these texts is amplified, and quite often enabled by knowing at least the basic historical context. Below I'll list the historical works I've read (and others) with some commentary, but I encourage anyone who has something to add to do so, since I am as of only recently getting more into historiography.
Anything by Anna Louise Strong (I've read The Soviets Expected it (1941) and In North Korea (1941), there's also The New Lithuania (1941), The Stalin Era (1956) and When Serfs Stood Up in Tibet (1959) for example). Her works, which I'd consider primary sources since they are written from her own experience witnessing events and talking to a lot of people, are extremely useful if you wish to form an idea about how some aspects of socialist states worked. The limitation of her works also resides in this specificity and closeness, these are not works that present a broad view of long processes, but a slice of the present with the sufficient historical context. They are still very, very good.
The Open Veins of Latin America (Spanish versrion), by Eduardo Galeno (1971). This one is focused on the history of imperialism in Latin America, how it evolved from the moment the first Spanish foot touched ground to the time it was written in (It talks about Allende before he was assassinated but after achieving power, for example). Perhaps it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it contains very important general context for any social movement that has happened since 1492 to 1971
The Triumph of Evil, by Austin Murphy (2002). I have mixed feelings about this book. While it insists on this weird narrative of absolute evil, which IMO takes away a lot of value from the overall points made, it is an astonishingly in-depth analysis of the economic performance and general merit of socialist systems against their capitalist counterparts. Most of the book is dedicated to comparing the GDR to the FRG, and both the economic and social data it exposes was very eye-opening to me when I read it about 2 years ago. If you can wade through the moralism (especially the beginning of the introduction), it's a gem. I've posted pictures of its very detailed index under the cut :)
Blackshirts and Reds, Michael Parenti (1997). Despite the very real criticisms levied against this book, like its mischaracterization of China, it is still a landmark work. Synthetically, it exposes the relationship between fascism, capitalism and communism.
Red Star Over the Third World, Vijay Prashad (2019); The Russian Revolution: A View from the Third World, Walter Rodney (2018). I'm lumping these two together (full disclosure, as of writing I'm about four fifths of the way through RSOtTW) because they deal with the same topic, Prashad being influenced by Rodney as well. Like both titles imply, they deal with the effects the October revolution had on the exploited peoples of the world, which is a perspective that's often lost. Through this, they (at least Prashad) also talk about the early USSR and how it functioned. For example, up until reading Red Star, I hadn't even heard of the 1920 Congress of The Toilers of the East in Baku, or the Congress of the Women of the East.
From here on I'll link works that I haven't (yet) read, but I have seen enough trusted people talk about them to include them
How to Cast a God into Hell: The Khrushchev Report, by Domenico Losurdo (2008). This one talks about how the period of Stalin was twisted and exaggerated through destalinization.
Devils in Amber, by Philips Bonoski (1992). This is about the Baltics and their historical trajectory from before WW1 to the destruction of the USSR (I'm not very sure on those two limits, perhaps they fluctuate a bit, but it definitely covers from WW1 to the 60s)
Socialism Betrayed, by Roger Keeran and Thomas Kenny (2004). This one deals with the process leading up to and the destruction of the USSR itself.
The Jakarta Method, Vincent Bevins (2020). This is about the methods the US used in the second half of the 20th century to stamp out, prevent, or otherwise sabotage communist movements and other democratic anti-imperialist movements.
I know some of these aren't specifically about socialist states, which is what you asked, but the history of its opposition is just as important to understand because it always exists as a condition to these countries' development and policies chosen.

Henlo! I saw that requests for Fyodor are open! And I was wondering if you could write something about Fyodor as a parent if you’re comfortable with that. For some reason I can’t find enough of those and I really wanna see how you’d do it!
(Not as the reader’s parent btw, maybe having a child/children with the reader. But I just wanna see how you think he’d behave in that situation and how you think it would all go down)

→ Dad!Fyodor who quietly reads your kids bed time stories, letting them sit on his lap while he holds the book in front of them, pointing to the pictures with a smile.
→ Dad!Fyodor who picks out the most whack ass outfits for your kid, proudly displaying it out to you and frowning at your hesitant smile.
→ Dad!Fyodor who discouraged your children from cutting their hair and braids it or puts it up for them every morning before school.
→ Dad!Fyodor who (very frequently) helps your kid/s with their homework or projects for school, not quite giving them answers but shoving nudging them in the right direction.
→ Dad!Fyodor who teaches his kid(s) the basics of playing the cello, letting them get a feel for the strings. He would teach them how to hold the bow and would let them stand beside him and watch him play.
→ Dad!Fyodor who cooks recipes that he learned in Russia for you and your children, encouraging all of you to try foreign dishes. They give him a feeling of nostalgia and wanting to pass those special foods on to his kid(s).
→ Dad!Fyodor who absolutely tries passing on happy group counseling hour to his kid/s when they seem sad or upset.
Scenarios !! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
Your keys jingled in the keyhole of your front door as you pushed it open, revealing the living room that you had longed to sit down in all day. Work sucked, you weren't going to lie, but there was something that was allegedly important going on, so you had no choice but to attend.
Your husband volunteered to watch your daughter on her day off of school, which wasn't a totally uncommon occurrence due to Fyodors line of work. He didn't mind watching d/n, he likes it a lot, actually. Fyodor values the quality time he can spend with his kid just as much as the quality time he gets to spend with you.
The pitter patter of your daughters feet got louder the closer she got to the living room, rounding the corner and smiling. "P/t!"
"Hey, what'd I tell you about running?" You say with a quiet and amused giggle as she throws herself onto you, hugging your waist. You run your fingers over the pretty braids weaved into her hair with a smile. "Papa did your hair?" The little girl nods excitedly.
"Well, you look very, very pretty." Another set of footsteps can be heard, this time softer. Fyodor rounds the corner with a smile, pulling you into a hug.
"Mm, my dear." He says, resting his head on you shoulder for a moment before pulling away, starting back towards the kitchen. He waves at d/n to follow him. "Come on, sweetheart, come help me finish dinner." She excitedly runs after her father, earning a soft and faint giggle from him.
Upon following the two of them into the kitchen, you can smell the beef stroganoff cooking, watching your daughter step up onto the little stool she dragged in next to Fyodor. They stand at the counter, Fyodor making sure she's nowhere near anything dangerous or hot. He gently pushes over a measuring cup filled with beef broth.
"Alright, Malyshka. Just pour this into the pan, and be very careful, alright?" He says softly, his voice gentle as he measures out the whipping cream. The beef broth can be heard being poured into the pan from the spot you're standing in, smiling at your husband and daughter making dinner together. Within a couple of seconds, Fyodor is handing d/n measurements of other ingredients, such as Worcestershire sauce and dijon mustard. He lets her stir it all in, guiding her whenever he sees fit.
"Alright, we're all done. Here, why don't you go sit down, I'll bring you and P/t your dinners, yeah?" He smiles at the young girl, rubbing her back before patting it. She nods and skitters off to join you at the dinner table. She blabbers on to you about everything she did that day, even running off to bring proof of her activities.
She comes back out, proudly showing off a coloring page filled with scribbles in numerous different hues. One of them was only slightly better than the other, the lesser messy one was labeled with Fyodor's name in his sloppy handwriting to match the coloring. You grinned at both of them, taking the thin sheets of paper and studying them intently.
"Wow, they're both wonderful!" Your daughter wears a proud smile at the praise from you, excitedly placing her hands on her hips. "Are ya gonna hang them up on the fridge?" You nod and ruffle her hair a bit, just in time for Fyodor to bring the food in for all three of you. He sets the plates down on the table, listening to the conversation still taking place between you and your daughter.
"Ofcourse I will, I love them both very much." Your daughter smiles, blowing on the small piece of meat impaled by her fork. "Maybe me and papa can have a coloring contest, you can be the judge!" She says to you excitedly. Fyodor smiles. "How about another night, Malyshka? It's getting close to your bedtime." He says, continuing eating his food. "Aw, but papa-" she sadly whines, Fyodor shaking his head. "No 'but''s, d/n. We can tomorrow night though, I promise." Fyodor smiles at her while she extends her outstretched pinky to her dad.
"Pinky promise?" She quietly mumbles. He grins and interlocks his pinky with hers, reaching across the table to do so. "I promise. You know i never break my promises, Malyshka." She smiles and nods in agreement. "Yeah, right. Tomorrow night then!" She says with a grin.
"Tomorrow night. Alright, d/n, time to go get ready for bed. Go put on pajamas and we'll come say goodnight in five minutes." You say to the small girl with a smile. She nods in compliance and quickly walks back to her room to change into sleep clothing. You look over at Fyodor, who is already looking back at you with a loving gaze.
"Ah, I forgot to apologize for the late dinner earlier, dear. I was quite busy being dressed up in tiaras and what not." Your heart warms at the thought of your husband bonding with your daughter. "It's alright, don't worry about it." You gently caress his shoulders before taking all the plates away from the dining table, washing them in the kitchen and sticking them in the dishwasher. Placing your hands on your hips, you nod in approval of your quick work. Fyodor waits for you in the doorway, nodding in the direction of d/n's room with a gentle smile.
You both approach the room, knocking to make sure she was finished getting ready for bed before you both entered. You said goodnight to her and kissed her cheek while Fyodor said goodnight and kissed her forehead. Before Fyodor could stand straight up again, d/n giggled and whispered to him.
"I'm gonna beat you tomorrow, so prepare yourself, papa. It's gonna be the best coloring you've ever seen!" She proudly claims, clearly confident in her coloring skills. Fyodor chuckles. "I believe it whole heartedly. Get some sleep, or you may wake up without that skill." He says, making sure she's 100% tucked in. She nods in understanding and snuggles into her blanket.
"Goodnight, Malyshka." Fyodor whispers, gently pulling her door closed a bit, leaving a crack between the door and the frame.

A/N (#2); I'm super sorry if any mistakes were made, I didn't proofread because I'm suuuuper tired lol, but I just wanna put it out there that I am absolutely willing to do more dad!Fyodor. Who’s Anna karenina if the story is about Kitty and varenka?
*screeches in excitement* okay so!!!!!!!!
There are two plot lines in this gigantic russian novel that are woven together to create a larger narrative.
One is the plot line of Anna Karenina and her family and her lover, Alexei Vronsky. The other plot line is surrounding a character named Kitty Shtcherbatsky and Konstantine Levin, and these two plot lines are completely different and share(so far, im a quarter of the way through the book) very little similarities.
However, the overlap exists in the Anna's family and Kitty's family, and in Vronsky, who in the beginning of the novel was leading Kitty on into thinking he was going to marry her, when in reality he had no intent of it, and then immediately lunged at Anna after seeing a brand new beautiful woman who he decided he loved more than anyone at all ever, especially Kitty. Kitty, before this, had turned down a proposal of Marriage from Levin, who is head over heels for her like a soft hearted sap, because she thought she ought to expect a proposal from Vronsky for the way he was acting with her.
This crushes Kitty's soul, and she gets sick while Vronsky and Anna are having a tumultous love affair spiced with religious guilt, her husband slowly being made aware of it, Anna's young son who doesn't know who this new guy is who's now his mom's best friend or something, and the severe judgement and hatred of pre-revolutionary Russia. Anyways, Levin's out at his farm learning how to move on and just loving life, Kitty's suffering(tm) from emotional distress, and Anna is realizing that she hates and detests her husband who she's cheating on in all the forms available to a person.
Kitty then goes away from Moscow for a while to get better, and she meets Varenka, who she immediately is like "oh wow a cool person" about, and then Varenka thinks the same thing!! they hit it off and start like volunteering together and hanging out and just having a grand old time and Varenka knows that there are way more important things in life than relationships and her company is teaching Kitty that as well and Varenka is just enjoying the fact that there's someone she's equals with and who is on her side and is like bringing a new perspective to her life and then Kitty realizes maybe she's not being legit in her intentions with her service work(Kitty's also a princess, side note, this public service stuff is making her look really really good), and so she kind of freaks out on Varenka, who kind of just listens to her and then lets her do her thing. But then at the end of this chunk fo the book Kitty apologizes to Varenka for exploding at her, and Varenka's like "oh sweetheart you're not as bad as you think you are" and then Kitty's like "when will i see you again?" cause she's going back home to Moscow, and Varenka says "I'll come visit you after you get married" and Kitty's like "WHAT IF I NEVER GET MARRIED;-;????" because Kitty really wants to get married, and Varenka says, "then i'll never see you", and then kitty says, "well then i'm only getting married so i can see you again" but through this whole experience she not only got an amazing friend, she got her hope restored in her ability to be in a relationship, and also in her heart got healed from Vronsky like. smashing it to bits and not saying sorry or goodbye.
*exhales slowly*
so yeah it's really a fantastic story and i'm loving it, if you can't tell, and you should 100% read it if you ever want something dramatic and also calm at the same time.

pre-publishing notes for slider (actually i meant to poast this yesterday i just forgor 💀), just to put them out there
as per usual i peddle an extreme amount of mis- and straight up disinformation about the aerospace & defense industries in this one. as a general rule of thumb if it sounds like i researched it poorly and/or made it up, that’s because i researched it poorly and/or made it up. like every scene i was like ‘that wouldn’t happen :D’ and wrote it anyway
this one-shot renders my third one-shot (about ice & hangman) entirely obsolete, as if the rooster one-shot didn’t already do that. so just ignore the hangman one. (i only wrote that one cause i felt bad about tagging my fics hangster when they’re barely in it.) Also, this one-shot kind of directly contradicts the end scene of “debriefing” in pretty much every way. i don’t really care, because this is a much stronger ending, but just throwing that out there—this one-shot doesn’t really jive with my other writing for plot/character arc reasons & im too lazy/sick and tired of my other writing to go back and retcon any of it
i only research things i am mandated to by school/a job/journalistic code of ethics, or that i think are interesting, or that i know will not depress me. divorce depresses me so i did not research divorce. Also im pretty sure marriage doesn’t work the way i described it “sign the papers & that’s it” but idgaf . shrug. im having fun
something i Didn’t make up, though: the thesis that iraq/afghanistan went so poorly in the long term partly because our armed services & especially that generation of commanding officers were prepared for total warfare with a near-peer (like the ussr) instead of counterinsurgency tactics against mountain-based guerrilla warfare-stratted forces (like Al-q*eda etc). that’s a very real thesis that ive read in multiple mil history books (“the generals,” ricks; “mil history for the modern strategist,” ohanlon) & co-opted because it’s kind of, in a fucked up way, a good metaphor for ice’s whole deal—he’d been expecting a traditional officer’s life with a woman etc (aka traditional warfare against the ussr, the us’ sworn enemy) and instead found happiness in the weirdest of places, another dude (aka guerrilla warfare) and no one taught him the right strategy for dealing with that; so, pigheadedly, like some US commands in the Middle East for a decade, he just dug in his heels & refused to budge/change his "total traditional war/heteronormative"-based strategy even if it obviously wasn’t working.
In a similar vein just so i can beat the allegations that im strategically dumb, the “strategies” against the ussr the boys are playing with in the usna section are intentionally the most dogshit strategies on earth. do not invade russia in a land war. especially not when nukes are on the table. the point is they’re ALL bad at strategy (strat as a metaphor for interpersonal communication).
i get the words “moderate” and “modulate” confused a lot. there’s a couple times in this one when I use moderate and mean modulate. Now it’s too late to edit it. by which i mean i am too lazy. editing anything on ao3 is a Sisyphean task. not worth it.
there's a lot to be said about my ice & maverick's respectability, which is to say, as slider points out, their life together is incredibly normie and boring and regular, except that they're two guys. like there's nothing super subversive going on here. "in the grand scheme of things is this really so bad?" is the question. politically this is a little funky. for metatextual character-arc reasons ice has to agree to an official marriage to prove that by the end he's not afraid to legally legitimize their relationship, but the heteroflexible/straight-passing/socially conservative ice & mav that I have written also probably aren't the kind of guys to acknowledge the struggle & strife & subversiveness of the queer community before them that fought for them to have that right. to quote from an essay by Lauren berlant & Michael Warner ("Sex in public"): "Respectable gays [ice & mav, distancing themselves from other gays] like to think that they owe nothing to the sexual subculture they think of as sleazy. But their success, their way of living, their political rights, and their very identities would never have been possible but for the existence of the public [visibly queer] sexual culture they now despise." just throwing that out there as something that is weighing on my mind having now finished writing this. I think that issue (ice & mav's relationship with/debt to the lgbt community) could be explored with a character like rooster, who might be much more a part of that struggle (especially pre-dadt-repeal)...but idk where or how I would write about it. just something to chew on. I keep finding different ways to politically interpret what I myself have already written which then keeps leading to more fucking one-shots. This slider one for instance was a reinterpretation from the 1980s Cold War politics lens of nuclear doomsday & how that affected a generation of men making shitty/suicidal decisions about their lives. an endless cycle for me. "just one more interpretation...i swear just one more..."

would love to know what the colors for your annotations mean :0
more than happy to share!!! so for background it's super specific to the russian five book bc most of them are specific to a player, so if i'm like "hm i wanna check back on some interesting kozzie lore" i can go through those tabs. and the annotation sticker set i have has a bunch of bigger tabs in different colors and then a couple sets of skinnier tabs. without further ado:
skinny yellow: interesting history stuff! usually pertaining to How Russia and America Were during that time or just hockey history in general
skinny pink: made me giggle! silly!
skinny blue: look this thing up that wasn't expanded on/relevant but was mentioned and read more about it later
skinny orange: Certified 1991 Moment What the Hell
and then the rest are Player Dedicated so:
purple: vladdie
light blue: sergei
orange: kozzie
dark blue: fetisov
green: igor
red: stevie y
and then i have a few other colors i havent used yet and im only halfway through so. if i need More Distinction i will add those later!

that works perfectly because i love just saying stuff Me irl is literally just talking about stuff sometimes unprompted and sometimes it's just really inconvenient but i guess in asks you can just kind of answer later. writting that book down for when im free!!!! we had to focus on how the author kind of like validated her arguments with the empirical evidence of what the folks she talked to said/did but she did this investigation like in a time (im so bad with dates my bad) where she could'vegotten in trouble for casting doubt on the goverment so she also had to like. protect any characteristic that might help id these people? and burn her research transcripts and shit it was really crazy. and it's like something we may have to do in the future for The Pursuit of Knowledge so reading how she was direct and also like very vague about where she was/who she was with it was a good read ...
oh interesting! yeah that’s really similar to how a lot of secondary works on soviet biological weapons are where a lot of info comes from sources whose identities need to be protected for whatever reason — family still in russia who could be at risk, protecting their professional career/new lives, etc. the like main book on the soviet program is like 90% bro trust me we got this from interviews with real people 😭😭

ok so this is simply MY opinion but ive wanted to say it for awhile now.
regarding the new vampire academy show (as someone who read the books) it isnt based. its not accurate and they changed way too much stuff that i honestly don't understand how it could even get back to the original plot. NOW, if the books weren't the basis, its not bad.
the casting is very good, as well as the plot line and the focus on rose and lissa (which is pretty similar to the book). the graphics are way better than i thought they'd be.
but, if it was trying to mimic the books, it did it wrong.
now, i wont even go into it all because honestly, im just annoyed but ive recently been seeing a bunch of stuff about sisi and just add my opinions ive been having for a long time.
now in the books: rose is supposed to be turkish. her father is turkish (abe the himbo <3) & her mother is of irish descent.
personally, i love sisi. i think she's a phenomenal actress and she seems to fit rose. BUT, i'm never going to stop being mad that they didnt cast rose accordingly.
julie plec has a history of doing this btw.
literally the ONLY characters i wanted to stay were rose & dimitri. (dimitri is literally russian. A BOOK TAKES PLACENIN FUCKING RUSSIA!) so i did want him to get cast by a russian but whatever atp
rose having her turkish identity erased does not sit right with me at all. it's not the representation you guys think.
NOW, like i said, not connected to the books, sisi is an incredible rose and she does her well.
i just idk, i love sisi, it's just so uncool how julie couldn't find a turkish actress. like they are tons. literally tons.
it just urks me bc i see all these people saying good things but like; no one mentions how they practically erased her whole culture/ethnicity. (dw the movie did shit with that too) like, idk, its just, i really would have liked to see more into rose and abe & was hoping that they would include some more into her turkish background bc they didnt do much? (im pretty surenit was little) in the books
idk, dont hate me please, like i said: love sisi and everyone. just wish julie found a turkish actress

9 and 10 for choosing violence (either stranger things or atla!)
did both <3
worst part of canon
I think the worst part of canon for atla are the comic books. ik ik their canon status is contentious but they are official and meant to be continuations beyond the original series and I dont like them!!! as always there's some fun things but mostly..... didn't like what they did with Ursa or azula. original series I have no complaints. good fun series!
for stranger things on the other hand....the worst part of stranger things canon is that it's still happening. I think the duffers only ever had one story which is the one they wrote for s1 and ever since then they've just been slapping things together and hoping for the best. sometimes it works!! Steve and dustin in s2 you will always be famous!!! but I think many of their later plots are stupid and/or boring (vecna. soviet Russia. not fr killing off main cast. dropping actually interesting stuff like kali. the government not being that scary anymore.)
worst part of fanon
tbh I dont interact that much with fanon atla rn I dont care that much for the romantic shipping and I like most of the canon ships so I do get annoyed when they're put away for a fanon one that I dont particularly ship (sorry zukka girlies...its just not my thing!) besides that im mostly on the occasionally read a gen fic side of fandom
like atla I think the worst part of fanon for st is the romantic fanon ships...like idk I enjoy some of them! I read a lot of steddie definitely...but I often find that my favourite non-romantic pairings or groupings get the short end of the stick in fics and posts. nothing annoys me more to go into the stobin tag, wanting to find some stuff about my two favourite characters, only for nearly every post tagged with them to get derailed into a romantic ship that im starting to not care that much for. I dont put stobin in little shenanigans as just a means for steddie to happen! I dont like it when characters don't have any complex feelings about their best friend getting together with their ex who, in canon, they still have feelings for! also I fucking hate pair the spares!!!!!!!!!!!!

Currently reading: Currently I'm reading a novel by Israel J. Singer called "The Ashkenazi Brothers" - obviously his name has nothing to do with ~ the state of ~ as he was born in Poland in 1893, flew from it because of nazis and died in new york in 1944. His brother Isaac is more famous - won the Nobel too. Both antizionists!! This novel is a long ass story on two jewish twins born in Poland in the second half of the XIX century - talks about jewish communities in central europe, poverty, how they were treated by tsarist russia and the spread of socialism. It's very pretty and I'm fascinated by it. It was originally written in yiddish, the language of the european jewish communities - a mix of german, hebrew, polish... and I'm fascinated by hebrew too, being a semitic language as arabic. It just makes me sad all this cultural jewish-european background was wiped out by nazism, as it makes me sad to think what's left of it is now inevitably linked to an apartheid zionist and terrorist state.
Favourite colour: red, green and orange
Last song: Moha K x Dystinct - Darba 9adiya - ...yah
Last movie: Compartment n.6. It's a movie about a Finnish student in the late 90s who goes to North Russia see an archeological site and on the train she makes friend with a russian worker who's going to work in the mines. pretty, lovely, delicate, beautiful
Sweet/spicy/savoury: I like moroccan sweets, im not really into italian creams and stuff - too sweety for me. spicy with moderation. Savour oh yes all the way.
Currently working on: we have lots of stuff at work and i'm happy bc I love it, even tho i'm part time atm bc of uni. I work in a local ngo and i'm looking forward to become full time when I graduate. (inchallah)
I don't know who's done it bc i'm so late. but im tagging: @0alanasworld0 @bostonoriginal @mavieesttriste16 @zbee @seedlessmuffins @swaggypsyduck @cryingforcrocodiles @mrs-bellingham @roobylavender @books-loverss @grizoulvr no pressure etc <3

February 2023 Wrap-up: 1910s
(You can read more about the challenge on my post introducing the challenge. Basically, Reading Through the Decades is a year-long reading challenge where we read books - and explore other media - from the 1900s to the 2020s, decade-by-decade.)
Obviously, February was a very harrowing reading month, since the 1910s are intricately tied to war. Almost everything I read or watched this month had something to do with war, or rebellion of some sort. War is a difficult and emotional topic to read about at any time, but especially this month. Inevitably, my thoughts were constantly drawn to Russia’s war in Ukraine, especially since 20 February marked a year since (the escalation of) the war started, with still no end in sight.
The Russo-Ukrainian war is a war that felt unimaginable and remote to me before Russia’s full-scale invasion into Ukraine in 2021. Having naively grown up in a bubble where war wasn’t supposed to ever affect my daily life, except as a distant terror somewhere far away, waking up to the terrible reality was a difficult and anxiety-inducing thing to face. Living in a country neighbouring Russia, it having not been even a hundred years since Russia last invaded our country, my empathy and sympathies lie whole-heartedly with the Ukrainians and their fight to defend their existence. Violence and war should never be the answer in politics, and imperialism is an evil that should be resisted with every inch of our being. Слава Україні! 🇺🇦🕊️
Many of the books, movies and shows below, which I read and watched and appreciated this month explore many of the topics and themes I’ve had on my mind recently because of the above-mentioned real-life politics. These topics and themes include war, imperialism, pacifism, nationalism, duty, independence, and self-governance. Hopefully, you can also find some new gems among them, and maybe ways to deal with the harsh reality we live in right now and the questions and feelings it provokes in us.
What I Enjoyed This Month
Tumblr media
📺 The Crimson Field (2014), created by Sarah Phelps -> A British period drama that shows the lives of medics and the patients at a fictional field hospital in France during World War I. -> More war dramas written by women please! The first (and only) season of this show is fantastic, and I’m so sad this got cancelled because very little is tied up at the end of the first season yet it’s evident that they had plenty of plans for the upcoming seasons. The many and varied relationships (and I’m not just talking about the romantic) are the core and strength of this show to me, and I wish we got to see them develop further. (I will forever remain pissed that I will never get to see more of Peter and Flora’s friendship 😭)
📖 Testament of Youth (1933), Vera Brittain -> This first part of the memoirs of Vera Brittain (1893-1970) is celebrated as a classic for depicting the World War I from the point of view of women and the middle-class civilian population of the UK. It covers the years 1900-1925. -> Last year, I watched the 2014 movie adaptation, starring Alicia Vikander, and was very touched by it and got curious about the book it was based on. Consequently, I had such high expectations for this memoir - expectations that were more than exceeded, I am glad to say! This is such an interesting look at a young person’s coming-of-age during times of extreme turmoil and the ways in which formative experiences impact us. I found the memoir quite relatable in so many ways despite many of the things being so far removed from my own life and experiences. If feminism, the experiences of a V.A.D, anti-war sentiment and pacifism, dealing with death, and lost/missed youth as a theme sound interesting to you, consider picking up this wonderful book.
🎬 Im Westen nichts Neues (2022; All Quiet on the Western Front), dir. Edward Berger -> This impassioned, visually arresting interpretation of the classic German anti-war novel makes the pacifist case to contemporary audiences through its depiction of the horrible madness of World War I and the tragedy of a doomed generation. -> I read All Quiet on the Western Front last year, and was very impressed by it. It is a true classic, about the horror and pointlessness of war. So when I found out a new German movie adaptation was coming out, I was psyched! From the film’s chilling opening montage that emblematises the machinery of the war and the way it chews you up (it absolutely made me shiver to my core!), I knew this movie would stick with me. Well worth watching. (Although I do prefer the book to this movie, which has that familiar tendency to dramatise things for the visuality and all that.)
Tumblr media
🎬 Suffragette (2015), dir. Sarah Gavron -> A British historical drama film about women's suffrage in the UK. -> This is a fantastic film about the suffrage movement in the UK, showing what was going on with regard to women’s rights before WWI swallowed up everyone’s attention, time, and efforts. Fantastic actresses all round, with a working-class main character as the focus.
📺 Rebellion (2016), created by Colin Teevan -> A historical mini series that dramatises the events surrounding the Irish 1916 Easter Rising. Told through the perspective of a group of fictional characters who live through the political events, the series was produced to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the 1916 Rising. -> I’ve been reading up on Irish history recently, so this was a great series to hit upon! I particularly appreciated the way that female characters were included in this and the storylines that were written for them.
📖 Ali und Nino (1937; Ali and Nino), Kurban Said -> A novel about a romance between a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and a Christian Georgian girl in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, in the years 1918–1920. -> A super interesting book, full of ambiguity, thematising boundaries and fluidity. Taking centre-stage is the question of the often difficult-to-define boundary/limit/border between Europe and Asia. I was also quite fascinated by the way this book took up the matter of women’s place and rights. (I also checked out the 2016 movie adaptation. However, I only ended up watching the first 50 minutes or so because - while the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous! - I was not going to sit through a whole two hours of a script that... lacking.)

Okay so thoughts on shadow & bone S1? If you feel like rambling a bit - opinions about the characters/ships/plot? Ty 💕✨️
Hello! I'm navigating the hell of academia and as im waiting for friends who have the application process figured out to get back to me, why not answer this lovely ask :) thank you for asking me btw i love to give my opinions about stuff :)) under the cut bcs its probably gonna get long... hugs! <3
i mean.., its silly. not to say stupid but like, it very much shows that its a ya novel. i wasnt expecting much, given that i wasnt invested in it since i havent read the books or anything, but its just... silly and cliched. the writing choices are very much in like with ya literature, there werent any surprises or plot twists that i havent foreseen at least a bit in a way, and its a good show to like, semi watch when your brain is foggy and you need sth to rest your brain bcs you dont need extreme brainpower to follow it, or much brain power at all if im honest.
i have absolute beef with the completely insane way that language was butchered, alongside slavic naming conventions. it grates on your brain when youre familiar with it, so thats a minus. on the other hand, i didnt like the worldbuilding around the shu - you choose a fake russia to be the center kinda good guys, and you choose a vaguely mongolian-chinese resembling guys to be the villains. there was no nuance to the racism, and from what i understand, the author is american, so i dont get why theyd even write about these things without bothering to do even basic research. idk if im explaining it well, but that pissed me off.
i like the crows? kaz is hillarious, as are the rest, and all ive been hearing tells me they are the best part of the series. i figured out nina and matthias are also crows, or will become so, so thats cool. love their "priest witchunter falls in love w the witch" story, it very much reminds me of illya kuryakin and napoleon solo from man from unkle, and im a sucker for that. cant wait to see more inej and jesper too, they are literally the most interesting part of the show.
alina is a typical chosen one protagonist, tho her and mal are cute. i liked ben barnes more as prince kaspian. im thinking (and friends told me), that he gets babyfied and uwufied by the fandom, whichis honestly expected. imma browse the fanfics to see if theres sth interesting but im not holding my breath xD hes just... basic wannabe antagonist villain. loki wannabe xD idk.
anyways, it was fun to watch it and to bitch about it, imma do it again when s2 comes out probably, if i dont forget about it by now. its not a very memorable series for me. im more excited for a single episode of tatort saabrücken than i am for this tbh xD but oh well. i'll take whatever holds my attention (broadly speaking) these days :)
thanks again for asking me! all the hugs to you <3

well now you know. people who are overconfident are airheaded /:
but yeah not to be a hater or anything but... i still remember that trend on tiktok where american teens were like 'give me antidepressants and coke and imma explode russia in a sec' and then they cant find the hugest fucking country on the map...
STILL AS DISTURBING AS WHEN I REPLIED TO THIS THE FIRST TIME T_T these kids (boys especially) need to stop glorifying war i cant believe this was a trend T_T also the map thing is so true and i suck at geography but i could at least point to russia come one
also T_T although im annoyed i have to type this all over again, did you know russia is bigger than pluto. i love pluto lets talk about pluto more next time when im not frustrated with myself for fundamentally deleting my entire reply T_T
Tumblr media
