and now, for something completely random:

i think that in every field of study or work, there are things people in that field consider to be fundamental knowledge and are shocked to find out most don't know. as an aspiring biologist, sometimes i feel more affronted by this than i should, because i assume the study of life is relevant to humans as living things ourselves. for example, i was really surprised that a lot of people i asked had never heard of archaea. it's a whole domain of life! and there's only three domains! but i can accept that bacteria are discussed all the time in medicine and the news, while archaea are non-pathogenic so even though they are super cool (and also found in your guts) they're not that relevant to most people. a year ago, i was also surprised to find that my mom didn't know what RNA is. I was like, mom the life-altering pandemic we have all experienced is caused by an RNA based virus, so you must've heard it mentioned on the news. but also, RNA is like. how we work. this briefly awakened me to the fact that many people are not familiar with the central dogma (DNA-> mRNA -> protein) that basically governs all life.

But this realization was lost to my subconscious until recently. i was at a party and chatting with my friend's boyfriend, a computer programmer. i was trying to explain my work but we of course came to a common misunderstanding that all molecular biologists are familiar with: colloquial use of the word protein is so different than its use in molbio. people think of protein and they think of it as a nutrient, i think of a gene product that serves some specific purpose. so i'm explaining the idea that we can study specific proteins, and the context of my model organism and he goes "i didn't think a bacteria could have something as complicated as a protein." at the time i was like huh thats a weird misconception and told him about the four biomolecules (i was also drunk enough that i hesitated naming all four, which i think says something lol).

but now his offhand comment is haunting me because what does he think DNA is for? DNA encodes proteins! This brought me to the realization that while most people know we have DNA and likely know that all living things have DNA, they probably don't know what purpose it physically serves. sure, they know it gets inherited and determines your eye color or whatever, and they know there are genes with a specific sequence that can be mutated and that mutations change something. It even seems like most people have heard of CRISPR. but i don't know that it's as widespread knowledge that genes encode proteins (before it is said, yes i know the central dogma is not 100% true and 1 gene= 1 protein isnt necessarily correct, but let's not get into it). Like people absolutely know DNA is inheritable information, but do they understand what this "information" actually means? Cells don't care that DNA dictates eye color, they are making enzymes and structures and transporters. Idk why this is haunting me, but maybe it's because it has clicked this common miscommunication we have around proteins is probably because people don't know the physiological purpose of DNA. And also because of course bacteria have proteins. i literally don't mean this in a superiority complex way, it's just fascinating to me that there's a broad familiarity with some aspects of molecular biology but not widespread knowledge of how they actually work...and how all living things work!

Anyway. What are things in your field that you are surprised to find most people don't know?

Kyana would probably be involved in a lot of freshman orientation events from second year onwards. she just likes talking to the new kids and giving them advice like she would be the kind of orientation group leader who'd get messages from her freshies asking about all kinds of random nonsense because she's made sure they know they can always contact her with questions

Docent is the name of VR-LA's old laptop that broke down so he gave it to Cassimere (computer engineering major he met once at a networking event) to fix except Cassimere got everything off the hard drive and then somehow managed to fuck it up Even More so he had to get a new laptop (and named it Emi)

Roy has gotten food poisoning from his dorm meal plan at least once (based on at least one true story)

The heap trio + Mandy would be those friends constantly playing majong in the dorm lounge and if all the majong tables are taken they just play in one of their dorm rooms on a towel to dampen the tile shuffling noises (it was Mandy's idea)

Every morning Dani goes to the drinks stall at her faculty and orders one iced coffee to the point where the stall owner starts preparing an iced coffee whenever they see her approach (based on my true story)

Roy would be one of those people who goes clubbing every other week and every time he tries to drag the rest of the heap trio and Egan almost always goes and Dani would go if she didn't have a good excuse but always begrudgingly. anyway Roy would always be the only one having a good time until Egan gets drunk enough to start having fun

Finbar actually uses the dorm kitchens instead of just buying canteen food and it always makes the hallways smell really good

Maxim's the definition of a hall phantom. you know he lives on your dorm floor because you pass him by in the hallways sometimes and literally nowhere else. sometimes you're not convinced that he actually exists

VR-LA and Maxim's friendship stems from them being from wildly different faculties (VR-LA's in STEM, Maxim's doing anthropology so arts/social sciences) but also having lots of weird interests they cant really bug anyone in their home faculties about

Elyse is in student government and every once in a while Finbar receives a series of angry texts about the newest idiocy she's had to put up with

MR-SN and AS-TR start a stargazing club together. other notable members include AS-TR's girlfriend E-DN, MR-SN's friend C-RA (the one who always volunteers to carry the heavy ass telescopes) and MR-SN's friend K-LB who he pestered into coming to fix one of the wonky scopes even though K-LB's actually in electrical engineering but he's the only engineering person MR-SN (an arts student) knows

oh and of course VR-LA joins because he genuinely just likes space (developing a crush on his club chairperson was not on his bingo card)

Kyana and E-DN were MMA sparring buddies at one point which is how she found out about the stargazing and joined immediately

Seen that he's also an athlete, I think Kimi may be attending a private school. In that case, he might have some more flexibility when it comes to the interview. We'll have to see

I don't know if this is like,,, a common trope anymore but the whole "girl with glasses = ugly and she so beautiful without them wow who knew glasses made people so ugly ewewew" has genuinely stuck with me since I was tiny

I've worn glasses since I was 4 - I'm now 18 - and they went from "Just for screen and reading" into "all-the-time" wear when I was about 8? Maybe 10 - and without my glasses I'm incredibly blind (very shortsighted) so they're a big part of my life

And I've always hated it. Because of what was pushed in movies/TV shows/books. I always thought I was ugly. I used to purposely not wear them because I thought it would make people like me. Every trip to the opticians I would hope that suddenly my eyes would fix themselves. I started begging for contacts at 14. I started researching laser-eye surgery at 15. I never gave any characters I created glasses because then they'd be ugly. Any "self-inserts" never had glasses because in a perfect world i didn't. Whenever I imagined myself/daydreamed about doing something I never had glasses and I would feel free - I would feel like the "real me".

I was looking in the mirror a good while ago (sometime last year?), just sorta staring at my face and for once, I realised I wasn't upset with my glasses. I don't know why and how it happened, I don't know when my viewpoint subconsciously shifted but all of sudden I wasn't picking out the faults that I swore up-and-down I had. I just saw me - and i thought i looked really pretty, glasses and all. It was weird and I had to sit and think for a while afterwards. This experience came back to me like an hour or 2 ago because I again was looking in the mirror (face cream and stuff) and I zoned in on my glasses because I looking at the colours of my frames (they're gold & purple - very cool) and I suddenly remembered how much I used to avoid this. I would have taken off my glasses just to look in the mirror but now I don't even bat an eye - it's weird to look in a mirror WITHOUT my glasses because otherwise i have to practically be pressing my nose against it in order to see.

And it just made me realise how less harsh i am nowadays when it comes to my looks. I now imagine myself with my glasses. When I create characters I give them funky eyesight, sometimes having glasses, sometimes with contacts. I no longer try to deflect compliments from my friends surrounding my glasses because they think they suit me and that I look pretty with or without them. I like me in glasses.

I dunno why this has suddenly come to me - nothing has happened to make me think about all this. I just,,, was thinking about it - about how that dumb trope that was EVERYWHERE ruined my perception of myself for most of my childhood/all of my teenage years. I really hope that this trope isn't a thing anymore in modern media (I don't really watch,,, mainstream stuff lmao) because it's SOOOOOO stupid. I hope the younger generations aren't having to deal with the self-hate I did.

im the person theyre making didgustingly detailed graphics for. yeah sorry. im looking at the individual threads in my character's shirt. im staring at titus's chestplate because the gold is so shiny and detailed. dragon age the veilguard hair physics were the best part of that game for me. i am looking at the grass and the trees and the way the shadows move with the leaves in the wind. i think raytracing is cool as fuck even if i dont play with it on. yeah the game has 100 gbs worth of polygons and textures specifically for me. sorry
