I’m now halfway through The Magnus Archives’ 1st season, so I thought it would be cool to just post my thoughts on each episode so far :). (Spoilers, I like all of them, and this podcast is going to be all I care about for a while.) Also NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!!

- Episode 1, Anglerfish 🚬

Statement of Nathan Watts, regarding an encounter on Old Fishmarket Close, Edinburgh.

Really strong start, not the scariest episode so far but definitely unnerving, and it gives a good first impression and layer of intrigue. While the story is simple in comparison to the later ones, it was still enjoyable, and I was just appreciating the atmosphere and framing device of the episode as well.

- Episode 2, Do Not Open ⚰️

Statement of Joshua Gillespie, regarding his time in the possession of an apparently empty wooden casket.

This is still one of my favorites. The whole time I was on edge, and this was the first episode that really kept me up at night. I went from wanting to know what was inside the coffin desperately, to wanting to stay away from it as much as possible. Joshua’s insuring dread and creative solution to his problems was fantastic, and it ends with some intriguing plot threads being set up.

- Episode 3, Across The Street 📓

Statement of Amy Patel, regarding the alleged disappearance of her acquaintance Graham Folger.

I think I share a common sentiment when I say that Amy stalking Graham was almost as creepy as the actual horror lmao. Overall I don’t have that much to say about this one, but it was very enjoyable, and I feel really bad for Graham in retrospect :(.

- Episode 4, Pageturner 📕

Statement of Dominic Swain, regarding a book briefly in his possession in the winter of 2012.

I…feel like I should hold off on talking about this one for now. While it was definitely well written and creepy, it just seems to be so full of setup for future plot lines that I almost don’t feel like I can form a concise opinion on it until I really get what’s going on. Honestly, my only complaint with this episode is that maybe it’s setting up TOO much in one go, but I still had a good time with it overall.

- Episode 5, Thrown Away 🗑️

Statement of Kieran Woodward, regarding items recovered from the refuse of 93 Lancaster Road, Walthamstowe.

This one actually did a pretty good job at getting me to think about waste disposal workers lmao, I never really thought about them like that before. This one was just really creepy, but also kind of fun in a weird twisted way. It did a great job keeping me on edge as well.

- Episode 6, Squirm 🪱

Statement of Timothy Hodge, regarding his sexual encounter with Harriet Lee and her subsequent death.

I am simultaneously horrified, and unfortunately aroused by what happened here.

- Episode 7, The Piper 🔫

Statement of Staff Sgt. Clarence Berry, regarding his time serving with Wilfred Owen in the Great War.

Having an episode set nearly 100 years ago is a really fun idea, and it’s executed perfectly here. It was interesting how it also featured a real person, and I liked how the paranormal activity felt more metaphorical here, it really did feel like it was showcasing the horror of war.

- Episode 8, Burned Out 🌳

Statement of Ivo Lensik, regarding his experiences during the construction of a house on Hill Top Road, Oxford.

I found this one to be very nerve-wracking, since not only was the whole scenario with the tree just, like…three creepy things happening at once, but the fact that the statement was given by someone with schizophrenia did a good job making me question it’s validity, even though I’m certain it’s true after listening to a later statement. I also hope that I get to see how the history of the house is unveiled in the future.

- Episode 9, A Father’s Love 💡

Statement of Julia Montauk, regarding the actions and motivations of her father, the serial killer Robert Montauk.

This one made me feel really sad :(. I really felt Julia’s despair in this one (Jonathan Sims does such great voice acting for every statement btw, both the character and the actual person), and I was even more saddened by the implications of why Robert did what he did. If my assumptions are correct, then…SCREW THE MOTHER! It was also the first one that got me thinking about where exactly all of the paranormal stuff comes from, and later episodes only add to my theory that it’s all due to demons/cults/higher powers.

- Episode 10, Vampire Killer 🧛‍♂️

Statement of Trevor Herbert, regarding his life as a self-proclaimed vampire hunter.

Much like Episode 8, this one did a really good job at making me question the validity of the statement, although I became more sure of its truth a bit earlier. I also just love how nonchalant Trevor comes off as, compared to all of the other traumatized horror victims. (Also, I’m guessing that the name Trevor and the episode title are meant to be a Castlevania reference?) While vampires aren’t the most creative thing for an episode, at least in comparison to everything else, the beast-like execution here more than made up for it in my opinion.

- Episode 11, Dreamer 💭

Statement of Antonio Blake, regarding his recent dreams about Gertrude Robinson, previous Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute.

Yeah…Gertrude Robinson did not die a normal death. My guess is that she was caught by ✨the horrors✨, but I’ll wait and see. This was another very tense episode, with the prophetic dream world being really, REALLY creepy. I do hope we get to see more of “Antonio” in the future, as I think he could be quite important. (I also hope he gets punched for DUMPING GRAHAM IN HIS TIME OF NEED-)

- Episode 12, First Aid 🏥

Statement of Lesere Saraki, regarding a recent night-shift at St. Thomas Hospital, London.

OMG GERARD KEAY HI HI HI HI HOW ARE YOU!!! Yeah I audibly gasped when he showed up again, it was such a cool moment. Anyways, hospitals already creep me the fuck out so this was pretty effective. Definitely some great setup here, and it helped to make a bit more sense of Pageturner, now that I have a better idea of what Gerard’s whole deal is. It also added some good fuel to the whole cult idea, and my god this poor nurse. Having to deal with all of this in a single night sounds like hell.

- Episode 13, Alone 🌫️

Statement of Naomi Herne, regarding the events following the funeral of her fiancé, Evan Lukas. Statement taken direct from subject.

Having a new voice in this episode was really cool, and Katie Davison did an excellent job as Naomi! It was also cool to see how Jon interacts with other people, he was…nicer than expected. This episode honestly felt like it was calling me out, as I am also someone who’s confident in my independence, but if I was in Naomi’s place I would also probably be scared shitless. I really hope she’ll get a happy ending :(. Also, The Lukas family is quite intriguing, especially since we now know they have a connection to The Institute…

- Episode 14, Piecemeal 👆

Statement of Lee Rentoul, regarding the murder of his associate Paul Noriega.

Firstly, this is probably my favorite of Jon’s vocal deliveries. His performance of Lee Rentoul just feels perfect. (Once again, this applies to both the writer and the character, I’m genuinely convinced the latter is an ex-theatre kid.) Outside of that, THIS ONE CREEPED ME OUT. The body horror was very effective, with the only thing holding it back being the fact that Lee isn’t the most likable protagonist in the podcast, but if this happened to someone else I’d be even more upset. Still though, it was a very creative concept, and the whole vibe and execution of the episode made it great.

- Episode 15, Lost Johns’ Cave 🕯️

Statement of Laura Popham, regarding her experience exploring the Three Counties System of caves with her sister Alena Sanderson.

- Episode 16, Arachnophobia 🕷️

Statement of Carlos Vittery, regarding his arachnophobia and its manifestations.

The way they tackled the concept in the title was really well done. Arachnophobia is seen as an irrational fear by a lot of people, so having it portrayed as an effect of childhood trauma was a good call. And as someone who is not arachnophobic, this episode got me close to feeling that way. What ever force was making Carlos relive his trauma is a sick fuck. Also the cat was a real one, glad he survived the whole situation. (Also THE WORMS, HOLY SHIT IT’S THE SEX WORMS!!!)

- Episode 17, The Boneturner’s Tale 🦴

Statement of Sebastian Adekoya, regarding a new acquisition at Chiswick Library.

This episode really compelled me to get out the rubber bands connecting images lmao. I really liked all of the connections to past statements here, like the presence of another book from the library of Jurgen Leitner, to the mention of Micheal Crew. The body horror here was once again very creepy, (outside of the flat rat, that was morbidly funny), but my favorite part of the episode was the introduction of Elias, which was a humorous, but also very intriguing scene. Also, the themes of books containing power was great as well. Great stuff all around.

- Episode 18, The Man Upstairs 🥩

Statement of Christof Rudenko, regarding his interactions with a first floor resident of Welbeck House, Wandsworth.

…ew. Ok in all seriousness, this is probably my least favorite episode so far. Still very far from bad, but after all of the extremely interesting themes and plot threads, having an episode where the idea was just “What if a guy had a house covered in meat? Wouldn’t that be fucked up?”, felt just a little bit underwhelming. Which like, the fact that my least favorite episode’s biggest problem is that I find it slightly pales in comparison to previous ones is just a testament to how much I’ve been enjoying the podcast. Still though, there were definitely a few things I really liked. The reveal of the room was creepy (especially considering the meat that seemed…alive…), and as someone who has had to deal with upstairs neighbors making noise for hours during construction, this episode definitely scared me.

- Episode 19, Confession, and Episode 20, Desecrated Host ✝️

Statement of Father Edwin Burroughs, regarding his claimed demonic possession.

This, alongside Lost Johns’ Cave, was one (or I guess, two…) of those episodes that seriously fucked me up. While I am not religious, I have always had fears of how religion can negatively affect me and the people around me, despite the good that it seems to do for so many people. So seeing Edwin be charged for every “sin” he committed by a higher power that wishes to steal its faith, and then not get judged by it, but by the people around him for his one true sin, was absolutely haunting, and I hope he turns out ok in the end. Outside of the horror, the episodes were fantastic. Listening to the events of Episode 8 from Edwin’s perspective, and seeing how Ivo’s actions saved him, was really cool, and solidifies in my mind that Ivo’s experience was real. The connections to demonic magic and Latin script thickened, and it was overall just a great mid-season finale. In conclusion, I hope that Martin feels better soon, and if he isn’t actually sick and is being plagued by ✨the horrors✨, well then I hope he survives :).

He could hide the fact that Beatrice was pregnant, again, from his friends. They were busy with work, busy with their own lives and more specifically they were busy with Jake and Evelyn. It sounded a bit mean but he was glad that their attention was somewhere else other than him and Beatrice.

He told her he could do it and he was doing it. Even though he was really happy and almost whistling a tune as he went to work, he couldn’t share the news with anyone yet.

Beatrice was right, the first trimester was the most fragile one and they still needed to know how far along she was considering that her period wasn’t always on time and when it comes to stress it was obvious that it made her period stop. And he had to think that now there wasn’t just him Bea and Nikki…now there was another little baby.

“Sir!”

Bradley stops walking to look back at Faraday, the young officer saluting him. Usually Rooster would hate whenever the recruit did that, but he was having a good morning, so he saluted back,”At ease,Faraday.” the young man’s eyes widened but he nodded with a grin, “What do you need?”

‘Nothing much,sir.But me and the boys are wondering how the miss and little miss are.”

“They are very good,thank you for asking.”

“And if we could give the baby another gift.”

His brain short circuited for a second, it must’ve shown in his face because Faraday whispered a ‘sir?’ that made him snap back into consciousness. He was talking about Nicole of course, “Ah, there’s no need.” he says as soon as he recognizes where he was, “She has enough toys and Christmas is next week,so.”

“Ah…” 

They stay quiet for a second, making Rooster sigh, “You guys already bought it,didn’t you?”

“Yes,sir!”

“Okay, listen,” Rooster places a hand on the recruit’s shoulder, “We appreciate what you guys do for Nikki, it’s really sweet…but you can’t keep giving us things, especially since there are other people with kids-”

“We gave Hangman a gift too!”

“...that’s…nice,but still…people will question why you guys keep giving us stuff, it’s really nice and we really like it, but I’m your superior and that can appear as if you are ass kissing.” he arches his brows at the send of his sentence, “You get that,right?”

Faraday blinks at him, then looks to the side in thought, ‘...well,sir, you and the Daggers are the nicest officers here.” he explains, “As in the veterans.”

Ouch.

Faraday didn’t seem to get that his comment made the other pilot wince visibly, being called old wasn’t fun for anyone, but especially not Rooster. “Thank you,Faraday. That’s…really nice.”

The other officer smiles, saluting him one more time, “Don’t mention it,sir! We mean it!”

“Yes,I’m sure you do.” Bradley clears his throat before looking at his watch, “I have to go now, Faraday.” his reply of ‘okay sir!’ almost sounded too loud but he couldn’t blame a young recruit for being so enthusiastic. He wasn’t that enthusiastic, was he?

No he was probably too brooding in the first year, only loosening up as time went by.

Bradley turns on his heel to march to his office, pulling out his phone to check if Beatrice sent him anything, but alas there was nothing in there. He keeps his eyes on the screen, smiling at their wedding picture and then unlocking just to see Nicole’s cute chubby face staring back at him.

He inhales quietly, then licks his lips, “Okay, so far so good.” he tells himself, “Just have to keep this up until I can leave. I can do this.” he looks around for a second, “It’s for safety,anyway.” Bradley wanted nothing more than to shout to the world that he was going to have a second child but he couldn’t, not yet.

As he enters his office he stops, one of his hands still in the door handle as he recalls a forgotten memory. He remembers, when he was much much younger, that his mother commented about how she and his father wished to give him a little sibling…they never did for obvious reasons and he knew how much that conversation hurt her.

But she shared it with him anyway.

He stood there, on the kitchen table, his pencil tight on his grasp as his mother sat next to him with a mug of tea, smiling sadly, looking out the window. Homework was no longer in his brain, all he could think about was how she spoke those words.

“I hope you have a good life,Brad.”  she tells him softly, “When you grow older. Just do your best to remain safe…and if you give me grandchildren,I’ll be more than happy too.”

She wasn’t sick then, she was still the picture of healthy but her words sounded so…final. Like she knew she wouldn’t be able to see him meet Bea, get married and have his kids. It was a painful thing to think about, conflicting with his own thoughts that exuded nothing but appreciation and happiness. Bradley’s eyebrows furrow, he remembers how she was so quiet too in the final years.

Between hospital visits and school then college, Bradley never thought he’d achieve her gentle request. And when he got to the Navy, well, let’s say that was the last thing in his mind.

As he let his shoulders relax, he closes his eyes as well, “Hope you are lookin’ ma.” he murmurs, “I know you’d love to meet them…you and dad…well, you will meet them in a way when we go to Virginia.” he talked to Bea about it and she was very supportive of visiting the cemetery, she thought it’d be more than important for Nikki to know more about her grandparents as well.

Bradley sits on his chair with his hands folded in front of his lips, thumb rubbing over the wedding band repeatedly, following the way his finger rubbed against the gold surface, seeing smudges of his fingerprint on top before looking back to his desk, “Yeah, we’ll be okay.” he answered himself, his own doubts somehow making it’s way over.

He knew what he had to do, he knew how he had to act to always come back home and he honestly thought that Beatrice’s little scent pouch was her own way of a lucky charm. Ever since she gave it to him he had to admit he was able to sleep better and felt so much more…relaxed whenever he had to go.

His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on his door, he lifts his head, “Come in.” he says, then stands up when he notices it’s Cyclone, “Cyclone,sir,” a quick salute that the vice-admiral reciprocates, “Good morning,sir.”

“Bradshaw.” Cyclone’s stature and serious façade was enough to make anyone quiver in their boots, “I’m glad to see you are keeping yourself busy.” he drops his eyes to the pile of papers on the young officer’s desk, thankfully most of them were reports he already finished, “I hope,however,I’m not interrupting.”

“Uh, no sir. Not at all…can I help with something?”

Cyclone inhaled, squaring his shoulders with his hands behind his back as he walked to the desk, picking up a little toy from his desk. It was a tiny silicon unicorn with glitter and iridescent wings. His superior looked up at him with his brow up, “From your little one,I presume.”

“Yes,sir.” he nods, “I brought it with me.”

“I see…well, and how is she?”

“She’s….fine.” he couldn’t help but be confused by his superior’s questions, “She’s growing more and more every day.”

Cyclone nodded, pursing his lips and looking around a bit, “Of course, as babies do.” he says, “I have a request, Bradshaw,I know your wife is friends with my daughter.”

“Yes?”

His superior seemed almost uncomfortable, “I want to know…if she said anything about what she’d like for my future grandchild.” he says, “She hasn’t told me much.”

Oh.

That’s a bit sad.

Bradley tries to not show his grimace, scratching his neck, “Well,sir,I uh…there’s nothing that I heard about from Bea…I thought you could ask her? Can’t you?”

“My daughter has been….very protective about the little one, so she’s not sharing much unless it’s with her mother and my wife is also refusing to tell me things.” he explains, propping his hands on his hips, “I don’t even know the gender.”

“Well sir,I apologize…I…we heard nothing.” Bradley offers his boss a confused shrug, did he really come to his office to have that type of chat? Odd, he thought he’d at least call him to his own office and have this conversation…unless it was bothering him so much he couldn’t really wait that long.

“...I see.” Cyclone inhales and clears his throat, turning on his heel to leave the office, but he stills and slowly turns his torso towards Bradley, “This conversation never happened. Have a good day,Bradshaw.”

“Y-You too,sir.” he waits until Cyclone is out of his office to let out a heavy breath he didn’t know he was holding and falls back down on his chair, “Shit…that was…something…I better message Bea when I’m able to.”

At least no one suspected anything so that was really good.

All he had to do was get through lunchtime.

Bradley sometimes wondered if his friends just could sniff the secret out of him because Nat was hounding up like a huntsman dog, like she knew something was off. But he promised himself he wouldn’t say anything, even if they suspected he would keep his mouth shut, for safety especially.

Phoenix stood next to him, chewing her own sandwich with her eyes narrowed. Rooster tried to focus on his own food but the way she was looking at him was nearing annoyance. He sighs and drops his fork with a frown, “What?”

“What,what?”

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Nat takes a bite of her sandwich,blinking innocently, “Looking like what?”

“Like you are trying to get something out of me.”

Natasha slows her chewing then shrugs at him, “I dunno, you appear different today.” she says, “A pep in your step if I could say so myself.” Rooster didn’t like how that sounded and he immediately worried that he gave something away, “What did Cyclone want with you?”

“How do you-”

“Word gets around, people saw him in your office.”

Bradley purses his lips “Just wanted some of my reports.” he lies because he remembers what his superior asked him, “That’s all.”

“Hmmmm…okay;” a pause, “Anyway,how’s the baby?”

Bradley stops, much like when Faraday mentioned something about it, trying to wrack his brain that the baby was only Nicole for right now. He tries to now give out too much of his reaction by drinking his soda, “She’s fine.” he says, “She’s really fine.”

“And Bea? Not getting too tired,I hope?”

No because it was early in the pr- oh, “Oh uh, no, no she’s not.” he sips even more of his soda feeling his throat as dry as sandpaper. Nat just looks at him, narrowing her eyes with her tongue rolling inside her mouth as she cleans her teeth. She folds her arms over the table, leaning closer to her taller friend with a suspicious look on her face. “...what?”

“You look different,Bradshaw.” she comments, pointing a finger at him, “You look different,can’t pinpoint what.”

“I’m normal.” he says, “There’s nothing different.”

Nat stares at him for a few more seconds, then shrugs, “Eh,okay…anyway, did you hear?’

“Elaborate.”

“About the thing they want us to do after the Holidays?” he chews his pizza with a frown, clearly he hadn’t heard anything, “They want to do some tests…with the recruits and the veterans…because of the drones and everything.”

Bradley frowned, “Almost dying three years ago wasn’t enough,huh?”

“Guess not.”

“I heard nothing about it. What do you know?”

“Just that they are building a team.” she says quietly, looking around to check if anyone was close by, “But Mav is involved.” the mention of his uncle made him look over at Nat, “I think he was the loudest voice against it and now they want him to…you know, prove it again.’

“Mav doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone.” he adds quickly, feeling a sudden protectiveness towards his uncle because no matter what, it was like people couldn’t leave him alone. Maybe he just wanted Mav to one day be able to retire without anyone pointing a finger at him and saying he’s good but there was just something missing. “You know that, we all do.”

“We do.” Nat adds, “But you know how the high brass is when it comes to Mav. And now that,well, he’s back on duty, people just want his head on a plate.”

Rooster huffed, crossing his arms with a frown, “Do you think we’ll be called?”

‘Not sure,Rooster.” she whispers, “There’s a chance.”

The thought about doing such a dangerous mission while Beatrice is pregnant again was always in his mind but he didn’t think it’d be so soon. He holds his chin on his hand, huffing quietly because that was a worry that always remained in his brain, there wasn’t much that he could do because well, it was his career, if he was called he’d have to go, “Any idea where this would be?”

“Nope, they won’t tell you until it’s time, you know that.”

“Yeah…I do know that.”

Nat frowns, crossing her arms, “You look way more worried than normal, I mean I know there’s Nikki and Bea, but something is off with you today,Rooster. I don’t know what it is.”

“I mean, I have a kid.” he shrugs, “And a wife and that weighs in my mind often you know.”

“Uh-huh.”

“What??”

“I don’t know what’s in that bird brain of yours,Rooster but-” she points at him, “I see that little smile on your face,” he quickly rolls his lips into his mouth and looks away, “Aha! So there is something. Come on,tell me.”

“There’s nothing.”

“Come oooonnnnn,” she pokes his shoulder hard, “Come on!!”

“You are worse than a child- stop it!” he swats her hand away and Nat just laughs because she did get a reaction out of him, it wasn’t what she expected but it was enough. “There’s nothing going on, can’t I just be happy?”

“I mean, you always look dopey ever since you and Bea got together,” she smiles, holding her head up with a hand. “You are just too easy to read.”

“No I’m not.” he mentally panicked thinking that Nat could get the secret out of him so he had to figure out an escape route, and he tried to get up with the excuse to go to the bathroom but then the whole squad showed up.

After that he just had to keep to himself, thinking about anything, about what Nat said, about the reports he still had to finish, about Cyclone’s weird visit and about how they should focus on Jake and Evelyn for a little bit. Payback asked him about Nicole, then Coyote and Fanboy, followed by Bob and Halo, they all wanted to give their honorary niece gifts.

And he appreciated it, but much like Faraday he said that Nicole already had so much and she was going to get a lot more next week and maybe they could give it to her around her birthday…which if he wasn’t wrong, Beatrice would be around eight month- he immediately cut the thought short as soon as it showed up.

He sent Beatrice a text since she hadn’t talked to him the whole morning, which was odd but he remembered that she was going to the clinic so she was probably busy. When he was done with his lunch he was glad and he quickly got up to walk away.

Bradley inhaled shakily, then rolled his shoulders, “Okay…day one is done.” he mutters, looking back to check if anyone was following him and immediately frowning when he saw Nat’s knowing smirk, “...fuck.” he looks away, “I just need to survive a few more months, that’s all.”

“Um excuse me,” Emma said with a frown, “this book is mine.”

The person standing before her didn’t relinquish the book in question, and Emma glanced up at him…and then promptly wished she hadn’t.  This guy was hot.  Like middle-of-summer in Phoenix hot.  Like compared-to-him-the-sun-was-kind-of-warm hot.  No one had a right to look that damn good this early in the morning.  She should just arrest him and haul him off to jail for that alone.

Very much against her will, her heart swooped and her breath caught at his very proximity.  She saw the exact moment he noticed her reaction.  A sly, maddening, delighted (sexy) grin came over his face.  Emma frowned thunderously up at him, as angry with herself at her reaction as she was at him for his…well, his very existence.

“Much as I hate to contradict a lady,” he drawled (Oh gods, even his voice and accent were hot.  She was in serious, serious trouble), “I believe this book, in fact belongs to me.  I was here first.”

Her frown deepened.  “I don’t think so.  Give me my item before I punch you in the face.”

He chuckled, leaning forward and crowding her space. (Her stupid, traiterous heart picked up yet again.)  “Oh Darling, I can think of some far, far more pleasant ways we can spar than a bout of fisticuffs.”

Was it suddenly hot in here?  

“Look, I don’t have time for this,” she said with a sigh, her voice beginning to raise.  “Just stop being a jackass and give me the book.”

Suddenly a small man with a brown beard, a grumpy look on his face, and a hat that read “security” stepped forward.  “There a problem here folks?”

“None I can’t handle,” Emma gritted out.  “Soon as this guy admits I got here first and gives me my merchandise I’ll get out of your hair.”

“On the contrary,” the man said.  “I was the first one to claim this particular prize.”

The security guard, who wore the name tag “Leroy”, glanced back and forth between the two of them for a moment, and then shrugged.  “Look, I won’t have any fighting in this store.  Work it out among yourselves, or I’m kicking you both out.  Then neither one of you gets the stupid book.”

For a moment Emma merely glared at the man, and he looked back at her, a look of steely determination on his face.  Finally he sighed.

“Look, love, the security guard’s right,” he said. “While quite enjoyable, our standoff will get us nowhere.”

Was the (hot as hell) guy going to actually be reasonable and give in?

“So here’s what I propose,” he said.  “We purchase the book and then adjourn elsewhere to discuss the particulars of whose prize it will be.  Perhaps you’ll allow me to buy you a cup of coffee at Granny’s?”

She crossed her arms across her chest.  “Are you seriously asking me out right now?”

He chuckled, and the sound did things to her, things that brought the color to her cheeks and stole her breath clean from her lungs.  He leaned even closer, so close she could feel his minty-fresh breath against her cheek.  “Sadly no.  I was merely proposing a parlay of sorts, a chance for us to settle our differences like adults.  However, if you’re hoping for a romantic evening out on another occasion, I could certainly accommodate you.”

“In your dreams!”

He wiggled his eyebrows.  Actually wiggled them!  “Perhaps.”

Emma growled.  “Are you kidding me right now?  It’s too early for this!”

He seemed to sense he’d pushed her as far as was prudent, and he sighed.  “I vow to be the perfect gentleman.  IIf we at least secure the item, we can then decide later who is the victor.”

She gave him a quick look and could see the sincerity in his eyes.  She was good at spotting when someone was lying, after all.  Finally she sighed.  “Fine.  But we both buy it–split the cost fifty-fifty.  That way neither one of us can claim ownership of the book before we get everything ironed out.”

“Here you are folks,” the perky brunette waitress said half an hour later.  “One black coffee and one hot cocoa with cinnamon.

Killian heard the waitress lean whisper “Emma, he’s hot” to the woman on the other side of the booth.

She growled and whispered “Ruby, shut it!” back.

He chuckled.  This was turning into one of the most delightful mornings he’d had in ages.  When the waitress had flitted over to another set of customers, Killian leaned back and grinned at his companion.  “She’s right, you know,” he said.  ‘I have been called devilishly handsome.”

“I’ll give you the devilish part,” she said with a wry quirk of her brow.  “Look…what did you say your name was?”

“Did I fail to introduce myself?  How very rude of me.  Killian Jones, at your service,” he said with a bow.  Her cheeks colored alluringly at his formality, and Killian was delighted at her reaction to him.

She was utterly captivating, and the truth was, he hadn’t been so quickly, completely and charmingly smitten with anyone since Milah.  Though he very much wanted to attain the fairy tale book for his Alice, he couldn’t say he regretted the complications this morning had brought.

He didn’t know what possessed him to ask this woman to coffee.  All he knew as they stood facing off in the bookstore was that he did not want their time together to be at an end anytime soon.

“Emma Swan,” she muttered.

A fit of pure devilishness came over him, and he reached over, took her hand and brought it to her lips.  “Enchanted.” he whispered.

Her quick, indrawn breath made his grin widen, and she quickly pulled her hand back and busied herself with taking a sip of her beverage.

“So, Killian Jones,” she said, her voice not quite steady, “what are we going to do about this book?  I don’t mean to be a jerk about it, but I really need this book.  My son…well, this is the only thing he’s asked for, and it’s been a rough year for him.  I just…I just want to be able to give him this one thing so maybe I don’t feel like such a failure as a parent.”

His heart turned over.  He could tell she’d said more than she’d intended.  Emma Swan didn’t strike him as someone who let her walls down quickly or shared her feelings of inadequacy with strangers.

“As a single parent myself, I can relate to the feelings, love,” he said, “but I’ve no doubt book or no book, you’re hardly a failure as a parent.”

“Yeah, well,” she said, glancing uncomfortably aside.  “I feel like it.”

Killian was silent for a long moment, taking a sip of his coffee.  If it weren’t for Alice, he’d give up his claim on the book in a moment, but it was for Alice.  Was there any way they could both get what they wanted?

“I don’t wish to be intransigent either,” he said finally, “and my behavior today is not a matter of mere stubbornness.  My daughter also has her heart set on this particular book.”

Her eyes softened at his statement, acknowledging their dueling claims as parents wanting the best for their respective children.  “Yeah, I get it, so that brings me back to my original question.  How do we decide who gets the book?”

Suddenly an idea struck him.  It was unorthodox to say the least, unorthodox to the point of being downright bizarre, but it did have it’s merits–namely the fact that, should she agree to it, they’d be forced to see each other again on a fairly regular basis.

“I do have an idea,” he said slowly, “but it may sound positively daft.”

She gave him an assessing look, taking another dainty sip of her cocoa.  “Okay, I’m listening.”

“What if we share the book?” he blurted out.

“Share it?  What do you mean?”

“I mean,” he said, “what if we trade off?  Your lad gets the book one week, and then my Alice gets it the next, and so on.”

Her brow furrowed.  “You mean like…joint custody…of a book.”

He shrugged with a grin.  “I told you it would sound daft.”

Killian was encouraged by the fact that Emma didn’t outright shoot down his (odd) idea.  She seemed to consider it, staring into space for several moments, before briefly nodding.  “It is a weird solution, but I think it might be the best way we can both get what we want.  Can’t believe I’m saying this, but you have a deal.”

 Notes:  Merry week before Christmas!  Sorry it’s taken me several weeks to get back to this story, but as always, it’s a busy time of year.  I was hoping to get this story finished in this installment, but these two just wouldn’t stop flirting and being all sexual tension-y long enough for me to finish the story, so surprise!  You’ll get a part 3 next week!  (I do promise to finish it in a week this time!)

OPM Mega Review (chapters 131 - 148). Part 1:  Descent into Chaotic Violence

Flesh for the war dogs

Strictly speaking, this should be the third mega review I do. The first I did covered the initial hero response to the Monster Association, running between chapter 93 and 106 (here).  However with many chapters being revised up to chapter 130, I think that I’m going to wait and cover chapters 98 - 130 in one (more likely two) mega reviews.

This one itself is going to be split in two as covering Garou, Saitama, and the various heroes not actually on the battlefield is going to make it too long.

We always knew it’d be a struggle, but how has it come to this?  Weren’t the heroes working well together? How did this conflict get so dark so fast?  And for that matter, what the heck is going on?

This is a properly chaotic fight, of the sort rarely portrayed in fiction.  In this review, I’ll reprise how it come to this from the point at which Tatsumaki yanked the Monster Association base through City Z to now.  I’ll map it onto how fights are realised in OPM and I may or may not look forward to how it could go from here.

But I’m here for the nastiness. Just so you know.

How did it come to this?

Normally, I’d not bother with an extended summary, but I realise that a lot of people are confused as to what has been happening when, not helped by the fact that the manga is 100% committed to showing and it’s all been released over many small chapters.  I think that a few longer chapters would have made it easier for readers following release-to-release, but it all comes out in the wash once volumes are compiled.

So, let’s set the scene. It was a lovely late afternoon in City Z when the Earth started shaking, the ground split and a tower rose high up into the sky.  A perverted mirror image of that other tower rising out of a sea of devastation, the Hero Association Headquarters. [What, there’s people down there?  Yup! I’ve gone into that on an earlier meta].

We’d seen earlier (chapters 127 - 128) that Psykos had improbably fused with the rapidly-recovering Orochi.  We learn that they’ve had a helping hand from a meddling supernatural being. More importantly, they waste no time in setting the world to wrongs and precipitating the first great crisis: planet-scalping.  This picture is handy to see the scale and setting of the battlefield. 

I want you to keep one thing high in your mind: psychics are poor multi-taskers.  Tatsumaki is exceptional in that she can do more than one thing at a time, but even she struggles to do more than one thing well, which becomes important as she tries to stop the monster from targeting the land with any more of its death rays, tries to rescue the heroes without alerting the monster of the presence of so many portable snacks and tries to get inside the monster’s barrier so she can kill it.   She almost succeeds, but she gets skewered when she underestimates how vast the monster is -- and how rapidly it can regenerate.  It’s at this point that Genos intervenes, giving her time to dump all the heroes she’s been able to locate at the foot of the tower.  So far, so good?  She then twists the entire mass of the monster up, which ends up covering a lot of City Z and even some of the coastline beyond it and blood comes fountaining out. 

It all looks good until Tatsumaki starts coughing up blood, giving the monster the space to flee for as yet populated parts of the district, all the better to drain them of their blood and start the whole mass-destructive process again.

Tatsumaki stops her with a barrier.  It’s the equivalent of trapping an enraged tiger in a room so it can’t get to the kids playing outside by locking yourself in with the tiger.  And you haven’t had time to reload your gun.   For Tatsumaki, putting down the barrier to enclose Psykos-Orochi meant dispensing with her own personal barrier, making her susceptible to being killed.

Thankfully, Drive Knight comes in to harass the monster just then and Genos drops down to the ground to tell the heroes just watching to stop staring and come be useful. It’s from this point onwards that the battle starts getting more expansive.

After the heroes pull themselves together, including some narrowly-avoided homicide and a pep talk from hell, they formulate a plan to take down Psykos-Orochi.

The action peels away from the tower for a bit as Psykos-Orochi makes a fruitless attempt to shake Drive Knight once she gives up on trying to shoot Tatsumaki dead.  Genos chases her down but she manages to knock down the cyborgs and swings straight back to the tower to try killing Tatsumaki now that her bodyguards are gone, only to find Tank Top Master in her way.

Then the cyborgs catch up to her, stopping her long enough for Tank Top Master to hurl a building full of heroes, who cut her down.  Psykos escapes, leaving Orochi to be pounded into mochi by the martial artists and then shredded by the entire base being picked up, compressed into a spear and then thrown clean through him.

As the heroes gather at the hole where once a tower had stood, that’s when we find that there are now two groups of heroes, the ones who tackled or supported the monster take down and the rear guard (Child Emperor, Amai Mask and Zombieman) looking out for any escaping monsters.  Tatsumaki, Drive Knight and Genos are still airborne. Unbeknownst to the others, the rear guard have already been eliminated.

The first sign they have that anything is wrong was when a fireball split them up, at which point several things happen simultaneously.

All the following start happening at the same time. 1. Tatsumaki comes under sustained assault from Homeless Emperor.  2. Atomic Samurai and Iaian come under assault from Evil Mineral Water. 3. Genos is dropped into the field by Drive Knight, becoming a lethal threat to everyone, hero, monster, and townfolk still being dug out of the rubble alike. 4. Tank Top Master and Pig God fight a desperate battle with Gums... which Fuhrer Ugly makes impossible. 

There’s still some semblance of team work as heroes who resolve their situations hurry to help others and Puri Puri goes to find Child Emperor and the fights gradually flow into one location with Black Sperm doing battle with everyone while Fubuki and Bomb wait further away to receive any wounded.  It’s worth noting that at this point, the heroes have not had any time to confer as we digress slightly to consider how fights get treated in OPM.

Principles of Fights in OPM: Compatibility, Contingency and Chaos

I’ve written about the way fights in OPM aren’t determinative, but depend on the compatibility (relative advantages) between combatants,  contingency (what has come before), and the chaos surrounding a fight. Here.

How it applies in this case are that Psykos-Orochi effectively wasted the two heroes with the most capability and versatility to support the other heroes with the cadre, if not outright kill them off themselves.  Had Tatsumaki and Genos been at full strength, it wouldn’t be a fight: it’d be a rout, with the other heroes mopping up.   As it is, the remaining heroes have very little in the way of ranged weapons, no area-of-effect attacks and none of the wonderful benefits of telekinesis.  The heroes have no remaining big advantages over the monsters.

Strategy might help, but the heroes are too hard-pressed to talk to one another.

The monsters, now released from the manipulation of Psykos and the fear of Orochi, have reverted to type: impulsive, egoistic, and thoroughly of the moment, being entirely comfortable with chaos.   Sometimes the chaos has worked in the heroes’ favour, like when Gums ate Fuhrer Ugly, and having Homeless Emperor sitting out the battle for now, but more often it’s working against them, like when the now Vomited Fuhrer Ugly kills his way out of Gums and comes to add horror to the tough fight that they’re having with Black Sperm.  (Along the lines of chaos, I’m very happy that Bang peeled off to tackle Garou beforehand. As an obligate hand-to-hand fighter, he’d have been killed by the corrosion).

This Ain’t 5D Chess; it’s 3D Chess with Calvinball Rules

Unlike game-based stories, there is no possibility to respawn, reconsider, or reset any mistaken moves.  There’s a further factor that comes into play in this fight that I’d not already discussed: psyche.

When they do have time the first big missed opportunity that will arise will have to be Drive Knight having valuable data on the cadre but choosing not to share it with the other heroes as a result of hating Metal Knight too much.  As it is, most of the heroes on the ground don’t even know how many cadre there are!   Genos has that information, but because of the way contingency has unfolded, Genos has not had the time to debrief any of the heroes nor to pass that information onto Child Emperor... and now that information is no good at all.

impossible choices: at the time, Tatsumaki needed all the protection she could get from the monster she was corralling in the barrier so stopping to chat was out of the question, and yet, had he been able to tell the heroes what he knew, they’d have made different and better plans

None of the heroes who can overfly the battlefield to get an overview can now fly and Drive Knight has left, so everybody is in the mud,  just desperately fighting to survive from one second to the next.

Fuhrer Ugly’s talent was always in the ability to get into his victims’ minds and mess with them.  All that cruelty and insight added to a genuinely disgusting, quasi-untouchable monster has really disturbed the heroes.

And they’ve been making horrific mistakes as a result.  Had Atomic Samurai been a little calmer on seeing Zanbai killed, he’d have used his Air Blade attack to cut Vomited Fuhrer Ugly apart without touching him -- and Amahare and Ninchirin would be alive.  But that’s psyche for you -- OPM comes back repeatedly to the idea that when hard-pressed, people become more predictable in their actions, even if it’s precisely the wrong thing to do. 

In short, this is a real street fight with no discipline, no strategy, and everyone only able to look out for themselves.

Right now, they’re at the mercy of Golden Sperm, but as this is a chaotic situation, there’s every possibility that the next chaotic element might favour the heroes.   They could get a much-needed distraction in the form of King arriving.  Metal Bat might come and offer much-needed reinforcements. Zombieman and Amai Mask might pull themselves back together and do something.  Homeless Emperor might decide that he wants some glory for himself now and start bombarding his fellow monsters.  Psykos might pop up and start trying to order the monsters about, which they won’t take kindly to.  Garou might take an interest and decide that the heroes are his prey, back off you other monsters. Saitama and Flashy Flash might appear.

Or it could get worse.

Myths and legends.

There had long been talk of a curse placed upon your family many moons ago, but you always took such whisperings with a heavy pinch of salt and a large amount of disbelief. Witches? Curses? It was the twenty first century not the sixteenth, and the fairy tales that you heard from family members were getting rather tiresome. All you’d heard throughout your life was how the women of the family were doomed to be alone, never destined to be married unless they found that one person who would break the curse and lay true love’s kiss upon their sweet lips. It was a cliché, it sounded as if it was straight from a Disney film in all honesty, and even when faced with the facts you were very dubious about how true this was; it could be pure coincidence after all. So what if none of the women in your family had married? So what if many had come close but all had failed due to unforeseen circumstances such as sudden deaths and disappearances? Didn’t mean it was true, it was simply bad luck! A self fulfilling prophecy in your opinion, especially with how much people were obsessed with it.

“This isn’t to be taken lightly (Y/N),” your mother warns as you dismiss your Aunt’s insistence that you need to take all of this seriously, “if you find someone and they propose you could be putting them in a very dangerous situation.”

“Isn’t that the only way to find out whether it’s true love or not? How else will you know? You kiss him and then suddenly the world fades around you both and fireworks go off everywhere?!” you question sarcastically.

“Don’t be so ridiculous!” your Aunt scolds, “this isn’t a joke.”

You sigh as you sink into the armchair opposite her, “I’m sorry. I know it’s not. I’m sorry about what happened to Daniel, and I’m sorry about what happened to dad; are you sure that this is the so called ‘curse’ though, and not just bad luck?”

“We’re sure,” your mother sighs sadly, “you need to realise just how powerful true love’s kiss can be. It can change your life, it can break all manner of curses, it can change the future of this family.”

“But how will I know? Aren’t there some instructions or something that comes along with a curse? I’ve kissed a fair few people; how do I know I haven’t met the one yet?”

“It’s said that you’ll wake to a brighter world once true love’s kiss has been placed upon your lips,” your Aunt replies, “whatever that means.”

“And although you loved your partners, you never felt like that?” you ask as you look between the two women.

They both shake their heads solemnly, “unfortunately not.”

“So why did you go ahead with the wedding plans knowing that you could be putting them in danger?”

“Because we were like you!” you mum exclaims, “young and disbelieving that anything bad could happen. I know that a couple of generations in this family were never warned in the first place, the curse having been forgotten, but it soon reared its head again and we’ve made sure it hasn’t been overlooked again.”

“Hmm,” you hum, quickly checking your watch, “I’ve got to go, I promised I’d meet Gwil, I’ll see you both later.”

“Bye sweetie.”

“I’m sorry by the way,” you add when you reach the doorway, “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”

You get into your car, a renewed worry now washing over you, and drive into town where you were to meet your lifelong friend Gwilym. The older you got the less you saw of each other, but you always tried to make time for one another at least once every couple of months or so. He knew about the supposed curse on your family and the two of you had joked about it at length, but now you’d truly been convinced that it was real it suddenly lost all comedic aspects. What if you never found the person to break the curse? There’s billions of people on earth, the chances of you finding your one true love were slim to none as far as you were concerned. Luckily the sight of Gwil was enough to brighten up your face a little and as you walk into his open arms you feel a bit better than you had done on the drive here as you mulled things over in your mind.

“Hello you,” he sighs happily.

“I’m so glad to see you,” you reply, your voice muffled by his jumper.

“What’s wrong?” he frowns, holding you at arm’s length and studying your face, “sit down and tell me all about it.”

“Oh, you know, the usual… the great curse that hangs over my family and the fact that the chances of finding anyone to break it are pretty much zilch.”

“Ah. So they’re still going on at you about it?”

“I brought it on myself, I was being my usual ignorant self and talking about how it was probably just a coincidence or self fulfilling prophecy type thing… but it’s not,” you pause as you exhale, “it’s really not.”

“Right then, you’d better sign up to every dating site going so we can find you your true love!” he announces, slapping the table triumphantly as his idea, “you can start downloading apps while I get us drinks. Tea with a chocolate chip muffin, yeah?”

“You know me so well,” you chuckle as you get your phone out of your pocket.

You download the first free dating app you find, one you’d used before, then fill in your details and start swiping through your initial matches just as Gwilym arrives at the table with a tray of treats.

“Show me,” he grins as he sits down and slides your phone towards him.

He begins to flick through the options and as you look at each picture of the men you instantly dismiss them for what you realise is the same reason every time; they don’t look like Gwil. You cover your face with your hands, and hear his familiar laugh at your action.

“That bad, huh?”

“You could say that.”

“Well come on then, describe your perfect man,” he suggests as he locks your phone and picks up his mug instead.

“Well… y’know… rugged good looks, thick hair that you can run your fingers through, tall, someone with some meat on them so you’re not hugging a lamppost, a guy who can take the piss out of himself and who has a wicked sense of humour, someone who’s family orientated with a big heart… I dunno, that’s all I can think of.”

“Not to be big headed but that kind of sounds like me,” he winks.

“You?!” you laugh, a little too enthusiastically.

“Ouch!” he chuckles.

“I didn’t mean to laugh so much… I just… I think I need to go actually,” you frown.

Gwilym quickly reaches out his hand and places it gently on top of yours before running his thumb along your skin softly, “stay,” he whispers, “please. Don’t be scared.”

“But I am,” you admit quietly as you relax back into your chair.

“Why?”

“Because I have bottled these feelings for so long that I don’t know how to deal with them. It was fine when I didn’t believe in anything my family said but now it’s different, it’s very real, and I am not willing to put you in any danger.”

“What if I want to take that risk? What if I propose right now without even knowing the answer? It’d be worth it in my opinion.”

“Don’t you dare!” you warn him with a gasp, “do you realise what that could mean if… if it wasn’t you?”

“Do you think it isn’t?”

“I don’t know what I think but all I know is that I can’t involve you in this, it’s not fair.”

“I want to be involved. Please. I’ve wondered if you’ve felt the same for so long and I can’t let this opportunity slip now that I know you feel the same.”

You slide your hand out from underneath his and sip your tea quickly as you begin to wonder how this meet with your close friend had suddenly taken a very different turn, and Gwilym leans back in his chair as he drinks from his mug, giving you some space that you definitely needed.

“Will there be some kind of sign if it is true love’s kiss?” he asks casually after a few minutes of silence.

“Apparently,” you nod.

He smiles then leans forward and swoops in to kiss your lips with a softness that you’d only ever dreamed of before. He places one of his hands on your cheek, his finger tips gently caressing your skin as his lips move with yours in a joyous dance, and the arm that’s nearest to his body reaches out to land on his thigh as you lean too far forwards on your chair, almost toppling it over.

“So…?” he grins as he pulls his lips away reluctantly and rests his forehead against yours.

You look into his eyes as you open your lips to reply, but then you gasp as the blue of his irises suddenly appears to illuminate right before you, and you pull back in shock as everything around you glows.

“(Y/N)?” he questions as he sees your gaze darting around the cafe to make sure you were seeing things correctly.

“I… Gwilym!” you laugh as you take his hands, “why didn’t you kiss me before?!”

“No!” he chuckles, “really?!”

“Yes! Did you know?”

“Well I certainly knew that you were the one for me… I just wasn’t completely sure that I was the one for you...”

“You’ve always been the one for me Gwil, I was just too scared to admit it.”

100 Humans on Netflix

So there’s this neat Netflix Original show called 100 Humans. I immediately got interested in it because they take this group of various humans from different backgrounds, age groups, and so on, and they use them to conduct experiments to get answers to interesting questions.

So, right away I had concerns about this show because

If you know anything about data and statistical research, you know 100 people is a very small sample size and does not breed accurate results

However, I’m very curious and wanted to see what they came up with anyway. I watched all 8 episodes and, honestly, I enjoyed watching it for the most part. However, I have a LOT of issues with the show and how it was conducted and I want to list them out here.

If you’re interested in watching 100 Humans or have already watched it, please consider the following before taking any of the show’s data as fact.

100 people is a very small sample size. This is because, the more people you have, the more weight each increment in your percentages has. With 100 people, each person represents 1 entire percent. That’s a lot. That means even a few people giving incorrect answers, having off-days, or giving ridiculous results (such as you can see in the spiders georg meme), can sway the entire result of an experiment into unreasonable territory. This is why most scientific studies attempt to get data from many hundreds or even thousands of people. The bigger the sample size, the more accurate it is to the entirety of the world.

I’ll put the rest under the cut because it gets long

The 3 hosts, who I’ll refer to as the scientists (regardless of if they actually are, because I’m not sure and don’t feel like googling it) repeatedly make false statements. For example, in one episode, they told their humans to “raise your hand if you believe you’re less bigoted than the average person here,” to which 94 people raised their hands. One of the scientists then made the statement, “If that were true, it would mean only 6% of Americans are bigoted.” This statement is entirely false. The only way to actually determine a true meaning to that would be to determine at what percentage of bigotry you are considered a real bigot. You also must consider that believing you’re more bigoted than other people in a small group, who you already have an impression of, is not necessarily indicative of how you feel you measure up to America as a whole. Anyway, I could go on and on. The only way to accurately summarize the results of that question would be to say that 44% of the humans had an inflated sense of righteousness or something of the sort.

The 3 scientists, both in person and in narration, for the sake of entertainment (if that’s what you call it) continually made “jokes” that poked fun at different groups, implied men are shit, etc. Maybe that’s fun for some people, but the kind of jokes they were making to amp up the hilarity of their host personas was genuinely just uncomfortable and made me feel even more like they couldn’t be trusted to go about unbiased research.

The scientists continually drew conclusions where the results should have been labeled inconclusive

The scientists made blanket statements about certain groups based on 1 element of research that would not stand up to further evaluation. For example, when explaining that ~93% (i think it was about that number) of Americans have access to clean, drinkable, tap water and yet some large number of single use bottled waters are sold every year, one scientist said it was because people believe bottled water is safer and cleaner than tap water. I am going to do my next survey on this to see if my own perception is flawed, but I simply don’t believe that all of the people who buy bottled water do so because they think its cleaner than “tap” (as if all tap is the same.) I know there have been studies about people drinking unlabeled bottled water and tap water and not being able to tell the difference, but this neglects to account for the fact that different houses pipes can affect the taste of the tap water running through them, people can use disposable bottles of water for certain activities or events too far away from tap for people to refill their reusable bottles easily, and so so so much more. Anyway, it just really bothers me to see “scientists” making these kinds of generalizations when they’re the ones whose results we’re supposed to trust.

The show was incredibly cisnormative. There was an entire episode based on comparing men and women that made me extremely uncomfortable with its division of people by men and women. There was the implication that all men have penises and all women have vaginas. There were implications that reproduction is a necessity in picking a partner. It was just a shitshow. There was one comment by one subject who asked, when being told to separate by men and women, “What if I’m transgender?” Obviously I can’t say for sure, but this person didn’t appear to be transgender and the sort of tone it was asked in makes me think it was literally something they asked him to say in order to get inclusivity points with the viewers and to “prove” that they’re not transphobic by having them divide up, because they said to go to the side you identify with. This whole thing is a) harmful to nb folks who would not have had a side to go to and b) completely negating the fact that the way we were socialized can have an effect on our social responses. That means that for a social experiment, a trans person could sway the results of one side due to their upbringing and the pressures society put on them before/if they don’t pass. This is all assuming they had any trans people there, which is potentially debatable.  I also take issue with this entire fucking episode because just, the amount of toxicity in proving one sex is better than the others is really gross and actually counterproductive to everything feminist and progressive. Not to mention, them implying that they’re trying to support trans people only to reinforce the notion that a trans man is inherently lesser for being a man when even prior to hatching, he would have also been force fed propaganda and societal pressure implying he’s less than for supposedly being a woman is really gross and makes me angry. The point of what I’m saying is that it’s actually not woke to hate men as a way of bringing women up because there are men who are minorities who are being hurt by the rise of aggression being directed at them for their gender. Anyway enough about that.

The tests drew false conclusions because they did not account for how minorities adapt to a world that’s not made for them. This is specifically directed at the episode where subjects were asked to match up 6 people into couples. There were 3 women and 3 men and the humans were asked to put them together into pairs. they could ask the people 1 question each but then had to match them up with only that information. The truth is, the people brought in were 3 real life couples already, which the humans didn’t know until after they matched them. The couples were m/f, m/m, and f/f. I think that’s great, but the problem is, literally none of the humans asked any of them their sexuality as their question and most people didn’t even consider they could match up same-sex people. One girl even thought that they had told her to make m/f pairings, even though they didn’t.  The scientists concluded from the experiment that the humans have a societal bias toward people, and assume they’re all straight, even if they, themselves, are not straight. I personally believe that was the wrong conclusion to draw. You could see some of the queer humans were shocked that they hadn’t considered some of the pairings might be gay. But, I don’t think it’s because they believe everyone they meet is straight, I believe this says more about what they expected from the scientists themselves. If someone is in a minority and they go to do something organized, like a set of experiments, they are going to be judging the quality and setup of the experiments by those designing them. I feel that the lack of consideration that the couples might be gay has a lot more to do with queer people having adapted to a world where queers are rarely involved or included in equal volume to the cishets. The queer humans taking part in the experiment and failing to guess gay couples shows that they have adapted to a world where they are excluded rather than a belief that every random person that they meet is straight. My point is further supported by an expert they had on the show who explained that, statistically, it was entirely likely that they were all straight and that even queers will account for being minorities by going with what’s most likely. The truth is, we are surrounded by a whole lot of straight people. It makes sense to assume only 6 people are all straight and that, if any aren’t, they may be bi.

The scientists frequently broke an already small sample size into even smaller groups. The group was very frequently broken in half, in thirds, or into sets of 10 people. These sample sizes tell us almost nothing actually conclusive. 

The experiments/tests frequently were affected by peoples abilities, unrelated to what was being tested. For example, one test that was broken down into 6 people and 6 control people competing at jenga was meant to show whether needing to pee helps or hurts your focus. first of all, sample sizes of 6 are a fucking joke. Second, this completely ignores these 6 people’s actual ability to play Jenga. If someone sucks at jenga with or without needing to pee, them losing Jenga when they need to pee says exactly fuck all about whether needing to pee affected their focus. They should have tested people’s Jenga skills beforehand, counted the amount of moves they made before the tower fell, and then did it again after hours of not peeing to compare their results. This test made no logical sense at all.

The scientists ignored the social effect of subjects knowing each other as well as duration of events during their last experiment. They were testing to see if people with last names near the end of the alphabet get a shittier deal because they go last in everything where things are done by name order. They tested this by doing a fake awards ceremony where they gave out some 30 awards to people, gauging the applause to see whether the people at the end got less hype and therefore felt worse about themselves than those in the beginning who got the fresh enthusiasm of the audience. the results showed that the applause remained fairly consistent throughout the awards. The issues with this test are numerous, but here are the three I take most issue with. 1) the people here all got to know each other very well over the week it took to make the show. People who know each other and have become friends are much more likely to cheer for each other with enthusiasm, regardless of how long it’s been. On the other hand, polite applause from a crowd at, say, a graduation, where you are applauding people you don’t know, WILL start off more raucous and grow very quiet except for individual families near the end. 2) the duration of the test was a half hour, which is not very long at all and doesn’t say much to test the limits of enthusiasm. Try testing the audience at a graduation with a couple hundred graduates that also involves the time it takes to walk all the way up to a stage a hundred feet away, accept a diploma, and then wait for the next person. These kinds of events take hours and nobody keeps up their enthusiasm that long unless they’re rooting for someone in particular. 3) this study tested only one of many many ways name order affects a person. Cheering and applause is only one factor. It does not take into account people having their resumes looked at in alphabetical order and therefore people at the beginning of the alphabet being picked before anyone ever looks at a W name’s resume. It doesn’t take into account a small child’s show and tell day being at the very end of the school year, after 6 other people have brought in the same thing they planned to. No one cares about their really cool trinket because they’ve seen a bunch like it already. This test doesn’t take into account how many end-of-the-alphabet people just get straight up told, “we ran out of time. maybe next time,” when next time doesn’t really exist. I feel genuinely bad for the girl who suggested this experiment because the scientists straight up said something akin to, “lmao her theory was bs ig /shrug” even though it was their own shitty research abilities that led to their results.

They did one experiment intending to see how many people have what it takes to be a “hero.” The request for this test was made by someone curious about the effect of adrenaline and if it really works how some people say. The scientists thought it an adequate method to determine an answer by testing their reflexes with a weird crying baby sound and then dropping a doll from above while they were distracted with answering questions. The scientists looked up before the doll dropped to indicate a direction of attention. While this does give some answers about peoples intuition, reflexes, and ability to use context clues, its entirely an unusual situation, makes no sense in reality, fails to take adrenaline into consideration literally at all, and has a lot more to do with chance. The person dropping the doll literally couldn’t even drop it in the same place from person to person. Some got it dropped into their lap and others almost out of arm’s reach. This, like a few of the other mentioned experiments, was during the last episode, which felt lazy and thrown together last minute, with very little scientific basis to any of the results. The last episode was weak and disappointing overall. 

One of the big issues I have with this show is actually their repeated use of the same group. They said at the end that they had done over 40 tests. Part of doing studies is getting varied samples of people in order to get more widespread results. Using the same 100 or less people (already a tiny sample) repeatedly is a terrible research method. You’re no longer studying humans at large. You’re studying these specific humans. You can’t take the same group with the same set of inadequacies, the same set of skills, and the same set of biases and then study them extensively and in many different ways like this. Your results are inherently skewed toward these specific people and their abilities. I expected them to at least get a new group each episode - every 5 or so studies - but no. They keep the same group all week, which makes the entire season. This is inexcusable in research imo.

The next issue is contestant familiarity. The humans all getting to know each other is great, socially, but it also destroys the legitimacy of many of the studies that involve working together or comparing yourselves and your beliefs

Many tests had issues with subject dependency. One study, meant to compare age groups and their ability to work together to complete the task of putting together a piece of ready to assemble furniture had each group with members they relied on entirely. A few people built the furniture while one person sat across the room, looking at instructions with their back to the others. They had to relay the instructions through a walkie talkie to another contestant and that other contestant had to relay it to the people they’re watching build the chair. You cannot study a group’s ability to build something with instructions by the ability of one single person to communicate. You’re testing that individual and the rest of them on two completely different capabilities. One person fails at being able to communicate and everyone else becomes unable to build the furniture. Even if everyone else in the group is more effective than all the other groups at building ready to assemble furniture, they might end up falling in last because of their shitty communicator who is literally not able to convey simple instructions. (yes, this actually happened in the test)

One test judged the subjects at their speed of getting ready, to see if men or women are faster at getting ready. While most elements of this test were just fine, the part I took issue with was that they did this test without regard to social convention. They told the subjects they were going on a field trip and to get ready by a certain time. Then, they gave them many things to get distracted by, like refreshments to pack with them, a menu to preorder lunch from, and so on.  The part that upsets me about this test is that they ignored social convention entirely, to the point that subjects were judged based on their conventional actions and expectations more than their actual speed at getting ready. The buses promptly shut their doors and left at the time they were supposed to but there was no final call to get on the buses. In general, when a group is to be taken somewhere by bus, there will be an announcement to load up and leave. You could clearly see many of the subjects were ready to go and were just standing around talking while they waited for fellow subjects to finish getting ready. I have no doubt that, if given a final call, most of them would have loaded up within a couple minutes. However, they were relying on the social convention of announcing departure and were therefore, left behind entirely (for a nonexistent field trip). These people who were left behind were counted as being late and not making the time cutoff. If one were to look at the social element of this situation, if everyone there believed there would be a warning before departure, the fact that 24 to 14 women to men were loaded onto the buses at departure doesn’t necessarily indicate the women were faster to get ready. It seems to me that it’s more likely to indicate anxiety at being late and a belief that they need not impede on anything lest they be reprimanded or have social consequences for taking too long - something women are frequently bullied for. There’s also the chance that many who boarded without final call are more introverted or antisocial. Plus, we can’t forget to include the people who have anxiety about seating. If someone is overweight, has joint pain, or has social anxiety, they will be more likely to board early to get a seat they feel comfortable in. If they had counted up all of the people socializing and waiting on the sidewalks nearby, they may have found that there were more men who were ready to board up at a moment’s notice. I’m not saying I think men are faster to get ready, I’m just saying that we can’t know based on who boarded without a final call. If people believe they will have a last minute chance to board, a large number of them will take the last few minutes to socialize with their new friends until they’re told they have to board. Therefore, this test cannot be considered conclusive without counting and including the people who were ready and not boarded as a third subset.

Honestly, I could go on and on about how sensationalist and unscientific this show is, but I just don’t have 6 more hours to contribute to digging up every single flaw with it. There’s A Lot.

My point is, if you feel like watching this show, which I don’t necessarily discourage inherently, I just beg you to go into it with a critical eye. Enjoy the fun of it and the social aspects, but please don’t rely on the information provided and please don’t spread it as fact, because it’s not.

It’s entertainment, not science.

OC Scenario Tag Game

7.) Your OC somehow obtains the ability to time travel. Where do they go, and what do they do? So @akindofmagictoo left an open ended tag when they got tagged in this game (post here) and I actually want to do it because it looks fun so:

rules: pick an OC and describe what they would do in the following hypothetical situations. 

I’m going to bend the rules and pick four: Anastasia Nailo, Dash Nailo, Anne Jones, Enna Helder-Kromlin

1.) Your OC is at a jazz bar when they see a mysterious, alluring dame being pestered by a joe that just won’t let up. What do they do?

Aside from the fact that none of them would be in a jazz bar since its set in a fantasy version of the 1400s so I’m changing jazz bar to tavern/inn:

Enna would slip some kind of (not deadly) poison into the guys drink then rob him once he’s unconscious and give some of the money to the woman. 

Anne would walk over and say, “Hi. How about you get away from the woman and I don’t stab you?” Yeah shes very, ummm, violently inclined. 

Ana would flat out punch him. Her ex-husband is exactly the kind of man that would be in this situation and she won’t stand for it. 

Dash would invite the woman to sit with him and the rest of them. 

2.) The world will be destroyed in three days. What does your OC do with their remaining time?

I honestly don’t know. I think Ana would want to stop it but also she’s been alive for 300 years and is really fed up with the world going to shit and her (& friends) having to save it. 

As for the rest I have no clue. 

3.) Your OC spends the night in a haunted house for a bet, only to realize that the rumours might be true… what do they do?

Enna would kill all the ghosts. She actually did this once though, between killing her uncle and killing a dragon. It was a stress reliever. 

Anne would stay because she wants to win the bet. 

Dash would panic, he’s had something like this happen to him before and he spent 93 years catatonic in the Shadow Realm because of it. 

Ana would leave and lose the bet. She doesn’t care. 

4.) A character your OC cares deeply about has just passed away. How do they handle their grief?

Ana cries for like a week. Shes never actually been given the time to mourn before (After her mother died she got imprisoned by a dragon) so it would sorta be a combination of grieving for that person and grieving for everyone else she’s lost. 

Dash would hide and avoid all interaction for a few days-weeks. Other than that his response would mirror Ana’s for almost the same reasons. 

Enna would shut down completely; everything except the most important things (eating, sleeping, etc). Depending on who it was the shutdown could last a week or it could last a month. She doesn’t deal well with grief. 

Anne would go on a very, very long flight and have a good cry far away from everyone else. This is what they both did before Enna’s wings got destroyed. 

5.) Your OC walks into a coffee shop. What kind of coffee do they order?

Emily owns the coffee shop, if its a different shop she would order the highest caffeinated beverage possible. Ana gets tea, Dash gets coffee, Enna & Anne get something with caffeine, Peth isn’t allowed in because he’s too tall for the ceiling.

6.) Your OC finds themselves in a financial pinch - they need money, and fast. Who do they go do or what do they do to get the dough?

Anne & Enna would steal it. Actually all of them would steal/borrow it. Most of them would pay the person they borrowed from back. 

7.) Your OC somehow obtains the ability to time travel. Where do they go, and what do they do?

Okay this answer is actually kinda sad. 

Presuming they can interact with their own timelines, 

Enna would go back and stop her brother from dying. 

Anne would go back to try and kill her Uncle before he could kill her mother.

Dash would go back and keep himself from hunting after his father in the Realm of Shadows and ending up catatonic there for 93 years. Or he would try to stop his father from going there at all. 

Ana would go back to get her mother out of A’sshye before it burns. 

If they can’t interact with their own timlines,

Enna & Anne would go back to before they were born but after their brother was born and meet their mother and/or accidentally kill their uncle before he can kill their mother. 

Dash and Ana would do something that is definitely in a morally gray area and (if they can go back 1000+ years) kill Dizerdrat when he’s still young; before he can ruin the world as much as he will. 

If they can only go back 100 years or less (Since all of them would be going back 101+ years), 

Enna would prevent her brother from dying. 

Anne would stop, or try to, Will (her husband)’s death. 

Ana would get herself and Zane away from Jax (Her ex-husband) sooner than she did.

Dash would find Cerea sooner.

hmmm!! I have a lot of logistics I haven’t worked through yet, but if you want to read an absolute dumpster fire of thoughts, it’s under the cut:

as it stands, I think that the only reason they’d send someone like Simeon along with a loose cannon kid like Luke is that Simeon is amazingly competent/devout. I’ve written about it before, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Celestial Realm sent Simeon 100% with the intention of being a spy/to make sure Diavolo’s not up to any shenanigans. 

(w/the added bonus of getting to see how Lucifer/the sinblings are all doing/if the Celestial Realm should be worried.)

the best way to keep their relationships intact post Celestial War would be if Simeon didn’t participate at all! like, if he was around near the beginning, but maybe he was unable to participate in the actual battle where Lucifer n the brothers fell. that way he could at least have some kind of plausible deniability in their eyes/wouldn’t be known to them as actively trying to shoot them down or be responsible for Lilith’s death lmaooo

Lucifer: ALRIGHT *CRACKS KNUCKLES* I’ve expressed my headcanons before that I think Lucifer probably had a big ol Thing with Michael, and Simeon probably just knew about it. I think that Simeon had a big ol boner for Lucifer just like the rest of the Celestial Realm.

He’s obviously cautious at first because Lucifer is a demon now, and exhibits a lot more violent tendencies, but he’s mainly interested in the relationship that Lucifer has with Diavolo because the reports of Lucifer aligning with the Future King of the Devildom could potentially be a VERY BAD THING…  It’s gotten a little more tense now that they’re… here. at RAD, but overall, he’s surprised to find out that Lucifer, while still an ornery old man, seems to fit in with the Devildom with ease/loosened up a little. If I’m still going by my above “Simeon is a casual spy” theory, then I think Simeon would be even more pleased!

Lucifer @ Simeon at all times is like /SUSPICIOUS STARE, even if Simeon is like, come now, Lucy. They have ex-boyfriend energy even if there was never any actual dating. Simeon is now able to tease Lucifer, unlike their time in the Celestial Realm where Lucifer had an entire tree up his ass. now it’s a more reasonable branch. 

Mammon: THERE’S ANOTHER ASK ABOUT MAMMON AND SIMEON IN MY INBOX THAT I’D LIKE TO FINISH, but I love love loooove Simeon and Mammon being acquaintances. They knew each other in the Celestial Realm, again, not besties, but I don’t see Simeon being particularly close to any of the brothers except maybe Asmo. The biggest thing that makes me laugh is that I can see Simeon/Mammon talking about Lucifer in the Celestial Realm/at RAD about Simeon’s crush on Lucifer, but to Simeon’s chagrin.

Mammon may be one of Simeon’s favorite brothers, because despite the greed, his ardent love for his family warms Simeon’s angel heart ;~;  

Levi: My own personal headcanon for Levi (and I’d really like to finish up writing my fic/meta for him) is that he was an angel in charge of guarding secret beasts at the bottom of the ocean! (and was a beast himself) So while he spent a majority of time in the human realm, it was in the ocean where he’d maybe get to like, see humanity from their boats a la little mermaid and ariel watching eric from the boat/on the shore? So spent like, 93% of his time alone, and the other 7% was reporting up to the Celestial Realm. 

It was a prestigious job, an honor–but was lonely, and Levi hated it. Simeon probably sees him as someone that works in another department but also like, has no personal opinion because he’s never spoken to the other–but he has heard of Leviathan’s might, of course. Present time… Simeon is baffled by all of the brother’s changes, but he has no idea how to make the connection between the mystical sea guardian Leviathan to the otaku brother that never leaves his room? regardless of Levi’s ranking in the brothers, Levi is his least threatening/least assuming to Simeon. He can also see that Levi is kind, despite all his… strange quirks, so he likes him fine! :D 

Simeon also has a reputation among the angels, so Levi probably knews of him too! There was no reason for Simeon to talk to him when they were angels, and there’s honestly no other reason for Simeon to talk to him now. It’s probably because of the exchange program trying to make them friends or something, but there’s… he’d never actually want to be friends with Levi, so that’s stupid. 

(He doesn’t mind when Simeon talks to him about things, though, so it’s nice. Even if he’s sus of it.)  

Satan: Since Satan was born after the fall, I feel like Simeon would know this brother the least! He’s incredibly curious to meet “Lucifer’s Wrath”, having heard many reports about this in heaven. He’s probably pleasantly surprised to see that Satan is far more charming than the initial reports of savagery from when he was first born. Simeon sees a lot of Lucifer in him, but there’s a more wild/freer nature to him than Lucifer’s iron will @ all times. 

All in all, not a bad devil, but Simeon is reasonably watchful of him at all times due to his history. They get along fine in classes/they’re perfectly civil with each other! Satan probably thinks that Simeon watches him with a bit more interest than comfortable, but he also gets it. Satan wants to see Simeon get riled up though, out of scientific curiosity :3c

Asmo: This one is a BLATANT indulgent headcanon, not much canon to back it up except for that one time that Simeon said Asmo is still as beautiful as he was in heaven sflkasdkf. No idea what Asmo did before, but I’d like to imagine Simeon and Asmo were actually friends! Asmo’s beauty was widely regarded, and perhaps they would talk in passing? About Lucifer in most cases, lmao, but sometimes they’d chat.

Their distance when reunited in the Devildom is 100% Asmo being flippant about the fall, and being self conscious in front of his old friend about how much he’s changed. Asmo being torn between being upset to hear if Simeon thinks less of him for being who he is/aggressively “uncaring”. Who cares what anyone thinks of him, you know? He knows he’s beautiful. (But Simeon knew him when he was loved without being a sexual creature, and that… stings.) 

Simeon thinks while Asmo has definitely picked up less than delightful personality traits, is actually… happy to see that Asmodeus still has his family around. He’s happy to see the other seems at ease, even if he doesn’t truly know the depths of Asmo’s insecurities. It’s a little offputting to have Asmo treat him flippantly/deny their past, but hey, he understands. There’s a lot of history between them, both their own and the sins of others. deep down, Simeon genuinely adores Asmo, and Asmo is CONFUSED by the fact that Simeon is trying to act like nothing’s changed when everything has! how dare he! is he mocking asmo! rude!

Beel: Simeon worries about Beel’s ability to eat anything and everything as much as the next person. The gluttony is hard for him to stomach, being a holy prick and all, but Beel as a personality is obviously soft and tender, and Simeon thinks that’s sweet. 

in current times, Simeon makes some great fuckin’ snacks, he loves Simeon. Simeon just seems like a pleasant dude, and Beel’s never really that interested in him past like, basic civil decency. Which is pretty funny ajskdjfas  Beel’s memories of the Celestial Realm all probably revolve around his family/when Lilith was alive, so he’d distantly remember Simeon but it’s.. hard. that time is hard for him. 

Belphegor: In the Celestial Realm, Beel and Belphie where honestly like… Lucifer’s kid brothers that he may have seen or interacted with a few times in passing. In present canon, Simeon is Very Aware of Belphegor. The biggest threat of the brothers at this point in time, especially after all of the murdering and timeline switches. He may not admit it, but he is keeping a Close Eye on Belphie, regardless of his sudden shift to adoring MC. 

Belphie probably knew about Simeon, just because of Simeon’s rank but again, they’re… little brothers. (I’d love to see them being portrayed as a little bit older than Luke during the Celestial War? Just angsty teenagers Belphie and Beel.) Belphie has been distrustful of angels since the Celestial War, and it probably carries into present canon. Especially because Simeon watches him with a careful eye and Belphie isn’t fucking blind–but hey, he gets it too. He did plan to destroy the human realm. 

I can see Belphie being the only brother to actively dislike Simeon–he’ll be civil at combined Lucifer/Diavolo threat for Lucifer’s sake, but also Belphie is a sour bitch and thinks Simeon is the snakiest one of them all. (not true, belphie, you’re projECTING!!!) obviously, this is all never spoken out loud and they all just exist near each other. cautiously.

Joe Biden currently has a robust lead in polls. If the election were held today, he might even win in a landslide, carrying not only traditional swing states such as Florida and Pennsylvania but potentially adding new states such as Georgia and Texas to the Democratic coalition.

But the election is not being held today. While the polls have been stable so far this year, it’s still only August. The debates and the conventions have yet to occur. Biden only named his running mate yesterday. And the campaign is being conducted amidst a pandemic the likes of which the United States has not seen in more than 100 years, which is also causing an unprecedented and volatile economy.

Nor has it been that uncommon, historically, for polls to shift fairly radically from mid-August until Election Day. Furthermore, there are some reasons to think the election will tighten, and President Trump is likely to have an advantage in a close election because of the Electoral College.

That, in a nutshell, is why the FiveThirtyEight presidential election forecast, which we launched today, still has Trump with a 29 percent chance of winning the Electoral College, despite his current deficit in the polls. This is considerably higher than some other forecasts, which put Trump’s chances at around 10 percent. Biden’s chances are 71 percent in the FiveThirtyEight forecast, conversely.14

If these numbers give you a sense of deja vu, it may be because they’re very similar to our final forecast in 2016 … when Trump also had a 29 percent chance of winning! (And Hillary Clinton had a 71 percent chance.) So if you’re not taking a 29 percent chance as a serious possibility, I’m not sure there’s much we can say at this point, although there’s a Zoom poker game that I’d be happy to invite you to.

One last parallel to 2016 — when some models gave Clinton as high as a 99 percent chance of winning — is that FiveThirtyEight’s forecast tends to be more conservative than others. (For a more complete description of our model, including how it is handling some complications related to COVID-19, please see our methodology guide.)

With that said, one shouldn’t get too carried away with the comparisons to four years ago. In 2016, the reason Trump had a pretty decent chance in our final forecast was mostly just because the polls were fairly close (despite the media narrative to the contrary), close enough that even a modest-sized polling error in the right group of states could be enough to give Trump a victory in the Electoral College.

The uncertainty in our current 2020 forecast, conversely, stems mostly from the fact that there’s still a long way to go until the election. Take what happens if we lie to our model and tell it that the election is going to be held today. It spits out that Biden has a 93 percent chance of winning. In other words, a Trump victory would require a much bigger polling error than what we saw in 2016.

Let’s briefly expand on the points I made above.

Biden’s lead is pretty impressive

In this article — partly as a corrective against what I see as overconfident assessments elsewhere — I’m mostly focused on the reasons why Trump’s chances are higher than they might appear. But we should be clear: Trump’s current position in the polls is poor.

Biden is currently ahead in our polling averages in Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Ohio and in the second congressional district in Nebraska — all places that Clinton lost in 2016. If he won those states (and held the other states Clinton won), that would be enough to give him 352 electoral votes. He’s also within roughly 1 percentage point of Trump in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Maine’s second congressional district. If he won those, too, he’d be up to a whopping 412 electoral votes.

It’s important to remember that the uncertainty in our forecast runs in both directions. There’s the chance that Trump could come back — but there’s also the chance that things could get really out of hand for him. Our model thinks there’s a 19 percent chance that Biden will win Alaska, for example, and a 13 percent chance that he will win South Carolina. The model also gives Biden a 30 percent chance of a double-digit win in the popular vote, which would be the first time that happened since 1984.

But there are downside scenarios for Biden.

Polls often change substantially between now and November

Every day, my colleague Nathaniel Rakich tweets out a list of what our national polling average would have looked like at this stage in past campaigns. And it can be a pretty wild ride. Here is Tuesday’s version, for instance.

Three of the candidates leading in national polls at this point — Michael Dukakis in 1988, George W. Bush in 2000, and John Kerry in 2004 — did not actually win the popular vote. Bush blew a 10-point lead, in fact, which is larger than Biden’s current advantage. (Luckily for Bush, he won the Electoral College.) In other cases, the polls at this point “called” the winner correctly, but the margins were way off. Jimmy Carter eventually beat Gerald Ford by just 2.1 percentage points — not the 26.6-point lead he had at this point in the campaign. Bill Clinton won by 5.6 points — not 20.1 points. And Barack Obama won a considerably more commanding victory in 2008 than polls at this point projected.

Now, there are some mitigating factors here. Some of these polls were taken at the height of a candidate’s convention bounce, although there are ways to try to correct for those. And in general, polls have become less volatile over time, probably because increased polarization means there are fewer swing voters than there once were. The polls have been particularly stable so far this year, in fact.

But while there are some factors that reduce uncertainty, there are other factors that increase it.

COVID-19 is a big reason to avoid feeling overly confident about the outcome

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to more than 150,000 fatalities and has upended pretty much every American’s life, and Trump’s approval ratings for his handling of it have been awful.

But to the extent this is an election about COVID-19, there’s the possibility that the situation could improve between now and November. Cases have recently begun to come down after an early-summer spike, and recent economic data has shown improvement there, too. There’s also the possibility that a vaccine could be approved — or rushed out — by November, though it’s highly unlikely it could be widely distributed by then.

How to account for this? No, we aren’t building a COVID-19 projection model. (It’s really hard.) But we have built an “uncertainty index” that essentially governs the margin of error in our forecast. It contains eight components, two of which are very high because of COVID-19. Specifically, these are the high volatility in recent economic data, and the volume of major news events, as measured by the number of full-width New York Times headlines. There’s more news this year — not just about COVID-19, but the protests around police brutality, Trump’s impeachment earlier this year, etc. — than in any recent election campaign.

We also expect turnout to be harder to predict this year based on primary elections held during the pandemic that had highly variable turnout — which, in turn, could lead to more polling error. So even if the polls don’t change that much between now and November, that could create some additional uncertainty on Election Day. See the methodology guide for more on how we handle COVID-19.

But the other components of the uncertainty index are low, pointing toward a stable campaign. For instance, polarization is high, poll movement so far has been limited, and there aren’t that many undecided voters; the index accounts for all of those things.

In fact, the uncertainty index points toward the overall uncertainty going into November being about average relative to past presidential campaigns. So our model isn’t necessarily saying that things are going to get crazy, although they could. But it’s also saying you shouldn’t necessarily expect highly stable campaigns like 2012 to be the new normal in the time of COVID-19. (And keep in mind that 2016 was a pretty volatile campaign, too, even without COVID-19.) Empirically, the polls can move quite a bit from August to November, more than you might expect intuitively!

There are some sources of uncertainty that the model doesn’t account for, however. We assume that there are reasonable efforts to allow eligible citizens to vote and to count all legal ballots, and that electors are awarded to the popular-vote winner in each state. The model also does not account for the possibility of extraconstitutional shenanigans by Trump or by anyone else, such as trying to prevent mail ballots from being counted.

It’s hard to know what the “fundamentals” say

I’ve long been critical of models that use economic “fundamentals” to try to predict election results, mostly because — although they claim to be highly precise — they haven’t actually been very good at predicting the outcome of an election where they don’t already know the results.

And those models are especially likely to have problems this year because of highly variable economic data. One model based on second quarter GDP projects Trump to win -453 (negative 453!) electoral votes, for example. But if you built a model based on third-quarter GDP, which is expected to be highly positive, it might predict a Trump landslide.

This isn’t to say that we don’t employ a fundamentals forecast of our own. We do, but it’s much less confident than others, and it receives relatively little weight in the overall forecast. It also isn’t currently that bad for Trump. In fact, it essentially predicts the popular vote to be roughly tied. Why?

Although three of the economic factors we use in the model (jobs, spending, manufacturing) have been terrible, a fourth component (income) has been very strong because of government subsidies in the form of the CARES Act, though that could change if stimulus payments lapse. The fifth and sixth components, inflation and the stock market, have also been reasonably favorable.

Most of the variables that declined are now improving, and are expected to continue to improve. (Our model projects what the economy will look like by November rather than relying on current data.)

High polarization potentially blunts the impact of a poor economy.

Trump is an elected incumbent, and elected incumbents are usually favored for reelection.

We extended our analysis back to elections since 1880 (!) to expand the sample size, and found the relationship between the economy and the election likely isn’t as strong as other models claim, anyway.

In other words, our forecast thinks it’s far from obvious that the economy will doom Trump, especially if he can tell a story of recovery by November. Indeed, Trump’s approval ratings on the economy are still fairly good, so our model seems to be doing a reasonably good job of capturing how voters actually feel about the economy.

Another way to look at it is that our model is just saying that, in a highly polarized environment, the race is more likely than not to tighten in the stretch run. Empirically, large leads like the one Biden has now tend to dissipate to some degree by Election Day. And if the race does tighten…

Trump appears to have an Electoral College advantage again

Our model says there’s an 81 percent chance that Biden wins the popular vote — compared to his 71 percent chance in the Electoral College. That means there’s about a 10 percent chance that Trump again wins the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. (Conversely, the model puts the chance that Biden wins the Electoral College but loses the popular vote at only around 1 in 750.)

That reflects the fact that the tipping-point state — the state that would provide the decisive 270th electoral vote — is somewhat to the right of the national popular vote. More specifically, our projection as of Tuesday had Biden winning the popular vote by 6.3 percentage points nationally, but winning the tipping-point state, Wisconsin, by a smaller margin, 4.5 percentage points:

That 1.8-point gap is actually smaller than what Clinton experienced in 2016, when there was about a 3-point gap between her losing margin in Wisconsin (which was also the tipping-point state in 2016) and her winning margin in the national popular vote. This analysis is a simplification, too. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the outlook, so the tipping-point state could easily turn out to be Florida or Pennsylvania or something more unexpected like North Carolina.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge just returned back to London last night after a five day tour of Pakistan 🇵🇰. The Royal tour was successful far and above expectations. Princess Charlotte has developed a passion for unicorns. Over the summer, as boys do, will all of the garden time that the Duchess did with her family he must have seen salamanders and lizards or just fell for them via books perhaps. In all the a Star Wars movies the FORCE is the power of the energy for good to fight evil. The force be with you has become common usage when you wish some good luck or best wishes in all kinds of situations. Here we are now, dear MM ANON has the word force , in all capitals , meaning extreme, pay attention, some people say all caps means you’re yelling. This has an informal British meaning of a secret payment, typically one made illegally; a bribe. So, a slush fund is extra cash , hidden, in case of emergency etc. Who is ‘his’ here? Is it PH? We have had a clue very similar wording, l cannot recall exactly. Madam feels very rejected by the big bad U.K. l have been there a number of times, trust me, l was treated like royalty by my friends there!! The people are feeling very angry by her poor me poor me, the final straw l think the camels back is nearly completely fractured. Rehab on the dl as the kids used to say. Down low, secretly. The emoji is the shhhh emoji, so it’s information to be kept quiet. So is that what visits to L.A. are now? Rehab? Is it compelled rehab?? She truly does need help, l also think a full medical and psychiatric work-up/assessment would be prudent. A long history of paranoia, people medicate themselves when experiencing psychotic symptoms. Unsure when this will happen. Harry needs family rehab, medical care, therapist but most of all time away from madam, of any appearances with her. Time to recharge his personal batteries, get his mojo back, as MM ANON used the word mojo, the other day!😊

Invictus recovery

Invictus, Harry’s blood sweat and l am certain many tears were the impetus for him creating Invictus. Invictus from the Latin means undefeated or unconquered. It is the perfect word for describing the individuals who are veterans with visible or not visible post war trauma. The next a Invictus Games are you be held at The Hague, The Netherlands in May, 2020. Harry did a quick visit there while madam was having her fauxmegnancy. This organization has helped uncounted veterans and their families, through the games, the camaraderie etc. He has done extremely well and he should be very very proud of helping sooo many including himself!

… loyally remembered November 11/2019, the eleventh hour, the eleventh day of the eleventh month we all or should stop to remain those veterans and those fallen in battle for our freedoms. It is always a day that many attend services, the Royal family always do, they spread out and cover various places. Harry is Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps (AAC), and as HMTQ Personal Aide-de-Camp. He will be dressed in his dress uniform and likely attend several places. I think it might be especially poignant and painful this year due to the suicide of his close friend, who helped train him for the South Pole adventure, Jules Roberts.
