Re: my poll, because its way too early to start thinking about The Data but also I am thinking about The Data.

Respect JE for holding out a steady third, but I honestly expected it to have way more votes. I think I underestimated the number of jm shippers who prefer jon/tim and jon/gerry.

I think I've seen more jon/tim voters stating their case out loud than jon/gerry shippers, but the latter is still keeping a few paces ahead, which is interesting in and of itself, but I haven't done a full count so I may be misremembering.

A few people have brought up jon/basira and jon/helen, which aren't ships I usually think about but which I can see the appeal for.

I have also acquired a new messy oil spill ship to have brainworms over because the only thing better than one jon is two jons. If you know you know.

To my fellow jon/sasha truthers out there I know the number is small but I see you.

I want to know how many jon/peters were misclicks. So far nobody has come forward to even mention it (aside from one person who found it confusing lmao). I even more want to know who has it as their favorite and why. Like not in a judgey way I like them too I'm just so curious.

Initially included "platonic or romantic" at the last minute but now I sort of wish I had done two separate polls because I want to see the data, but I really don't want to do this to my notes again its been scary.

For example a lot of jon/daisy voters specified platonic, which is Fair and Valid (I like them both ways), but now I want to know how different the results would look if I had a poll for platonic and a poll for romantic.

Jon/daisy and jon/gerry got the most "platonic" specifications so would they crush that poll? Would jon/tim take the lead?

Honestly? The fact that he plays the bratty dictator role as well as he does. Usually those types of characters aren't popular but he makes it work. I don't even like bratty characters. You can ask anyone who knows me well enough, I notoriously bicker about bratty characters. And yet I adore him for it. He carries the whole show.

- Least favorite thing about them

The fact that he actively runs away and fears the front line fighting role. At least in the show. Its been shown multiple times in the show, even in the games, that he's hella powerful. I get that it's partially because of his role as a general so it would make sense. But what I wouldn't give to see more of him throwing hands w Pac instead of shrilling and running away flailing.

Hard to say given PMATGA is literally "Everyone hates Betrayus" the show, but oddly enough the brOTP that I like is literally him and his bro. Even if they don't get along I know that Betrayus values family to some degree. There's an episode where Pac goes to a bad end future and Betrayus had taken over Pac World, but instead of outright killing the brother he seems to hate so much he kind of just... keeps him around? It couldn't be to gloat, many many years had past and Stratos was very much brain dead and zombified. You could argue it was for plot (yeah obviously). You could argue it's to get information about the repository.... but as I had mentioned, enough time passed for Stratos to grow old and grey, and Betrayus seems to have given up the idea of finding the whereabouts of his old body. Heck, he was even thrilled about seeing Pac who had went missing, and he supposedly hates him. A part of me believes he does love his bro, and would never wish something like death on him.

Don't really have one unless we're including crackships, in which case Zs'Skayr x Betrayus that @6clawdy6 and I made. Never really found a ship between canon characters I was fond of... Betrayus is very hard to love.

I might get some flack for this one because I know it's a popular one, but Specter x Betrayus. Could never get behind it. They very clearly hated each other in the show. Specter was literally banished to the depths of hell to shovel hot dragon shit for trying to double cross Betrayus (not even a joke).

- Random Headcanon

The gloves he wears are often described as prosthetics. That gave me an idea. I have a hc that he became a powerful fire ghost because the repository had a meltdown when he had his ghost stripped of his mortal body. The result was really crisped hands, severe aching pains, and untamed fire magic. Those clawed gloves act as a power represent and a pain reliever of sorts. Like hand braces.

I honestly don't know if there's an unpopular opinion regarding him given with how small the fandom is and how my involvement in it has been minimal, but if I had to say... I'm not a fan of the idea that he's a redeemable villain if he was shown love or sympathy. I'm under the impression that that man is not the same as before and he's far too gone to be truly saved. Little to no empathy in that ghost's black charred heart. At best he can tolerate people begrudgingly, but even that's being generous.

What I love about them: His design is top tier. I’m glad he’s openly acknowledged as one of the most if not the most prettiest twst character. 

It’s a bit harder for me to put him into words but I’ll try. His complexities and frankly, insane amount of issues is just so compelling to me. He’s also genuinely entertaining and a delight whenever he’s on screen. 

I find myself wanting him to achieve his dreams and get the hell out of this hell hole, but also he can suffer just a little bit more.

What I hate about them: He’s so WEIRD. It’s endearing, but sometimes you just sit back and watch him have whole rants in his head and him acting up that makes you want to splash water on his face lmao 

His obsession with power dynamics is understandable given how he grows up and lives but my MAN!! SNAP OUTTA IT!! (Its okay, he can be a little delusional)

Favorite Moment/Quote: I could pull up the quote but I don’t feel like it, so I’ll just describe the event 

It’s when everyone is watching the fireworks show at Scalding Sands and Jamil just quietly calls out to Kalim and admits that he was actually enjoying being there with everyone (‘not so bad’ as he says)

I cannot emphasize how HUGE that is for him. Any semblance of this man finally opening up, communicating and being happy I gRASP for. It’s always the tiniest baby steps, and the fact it was such an innocent confession. 

It’s probably been years since Jamil thought he could talk to Kalim about something and sought him out. But he did it. *wipes tear from eye*

What I would like to see more focus on: Just begging on my hands and knees to see Jamil have more good experiences. Let him travel, let him have some sort of fun without some kind of catch lol 

What I would like to see less focus on: Can there stop being vignettes where the whole plot is that Jamil is miserable and no one cares?? I swear this has happened more than once but I could be wrong. But yeah, the Sunset Savanna vignette where Jamil is just running around stressed out looking for Kalim and Kalim’s just like “lol yeah but everything worked out” and it’s like, KALIM MY BOY I BELIEVED IN YOU!! (But that’s another wish I have for a different character obviously. And I get not every vignette can be post 4 development) 

Favorite pairing with: I am an MC x Jamil shipper, so what? 

But honestly this man can get paired up with anyone and it would be enjoyable. Like Sebek, Azul or Emi—

Favorite friendship: I’m not delusional, Jamil seems to actually be decently close to MC. Like there’s actually some respect there. Also he’s gotten Sebek a birthday present every year since Sebek got him that travel guide book and I think that’s sweet 

NOTP: I’m not really against anything in general. I personally think that, in the context of Jamil and Kalim, they need to actually work on being friends- real equal friends, before they could consider being in a romantic relationship. 

Favorite headcanon: I’m kinda stumped atm but I do think Jamil is going to get a Macaw one day and he’s going to love them.

Reisen for the ask game!

General opinion/How much I care about them: aaaaah! Even though she's a 'classic' touhou, i feel like it was only in the last several years (though with my warped sense of time, this could be be anywhere up to a decade) where she really dug out a special place in my heart as one of my favs (which is maybe a bit of a crowded category admitedly n_n) She's always been super cool/cute/funny and her backstory and development i think really nicely summarises a lot of themes from both th8 and gensokyo as a whole

A ship I love: there's a bunch but there's two i want to mention together because its really funny to contrast. one is reisen/kaguya (himeudon), which is on surface just cute and sweet, with the devoted bunny servant to the enigmatic princess who finds her cute. As the years pass, I don't think Reisen would ever stop seeing Kaguya in a majestic light, buuuut i do think she definitely becomes more wiser to when Kaguya is actually being wise and when she's instead just being quirky (but Reisen may still be happy to indulge her whims).

In contrast, i think reisen/mokou is really funny because their first meeting definitely has to be something like a horrified Reisen coming across Mokou killing Kaguya before anyone had a chance to explain to Reisen their particular pastime, so Reisen spent a while either panicking or attacking Mokou on sight until it all gradually became normal. And the idea of going from that to now when they're happy to hang out with one another in the bamboo forest or in the village. All in all its basically just another version of the cute bunny and the noble(ish) immortal who finds her cute.

A non-romantic relationship that I love: I've always prefered to think of Reisen's apprenticeship under Eirin has a sort of guardian or parental dynamic that neither ever actually had in their formers lives. I think its a really nice how Reisen's continued learning under her reflects on both characters developmenet.

One might ask what is the 'point' to Eirin bestowing Reisen with her knowledge since you may think Reisen isnt likely to ever want to distance herself from eientei to strike out on her own, and also since Eirin and crew will outlive Reisen, it doesnt seem like a matter of passing on something to the next 'generation', right? But even if there may always be some version of them that might always exist in the future, the Eirin right now with her dear Udongein is only here now and so every thing they (and all the eientei crew) do is important for one another n_n

The NOTP: I think there's a really fun dynamic to be had with Reisen and Tewi when combining the facts that Reisen didnt realise at first that Tew was essentially all of their landlord, and that Reisen wants to be acknowledged as an earth rabbit which Tewi attempts to accomodate sometimes even if Reisen's always a little weird. But there's no version of this where I can envision it turning romantic from either side...

My biggest headcanon about them:

She's not wearing that blazer anymore. That is Not a headcanon That is a Rule and if zun himself ever puts it back on her I will kill the planet!!!!!

that aside, I think she's on a variety of medication. 👩‍⚕️ Eirin's personal perscription of course for perhaps her eyes aaand a bunch of other stuff, but Reisen is the ever eager learner so she often cooks up her own concoctions too (which she asks Mokou to help test).

the doctor thing combined with the lunatic eyes makes me imagine she would partake in recreational psychotropics but its only really worth it if she can do it with someone else (and probably the only ones who would accept are mokou, maybe marisa... kaguya would but i dont think reisen would ask her)

An idea for a fanfiction I would like to write/read about them: i do want to write At Least one more reisen-starring story in the future about most of the things i described above, specifically her apprenticeship under eirin...

Something that makes me thing of them: This is really only something that happens in fanart and only because she's got bunny ears and associated with the colour pink, but i truly Feel like the colourful gyaru aesthetics fit her or would be how she'd next choose to dress if she felt more comfortable or even experimental. like the street fashion looks of long pink sleeves or socks,animal or carrot stickers on a handbag (that carries her firearm). zun take notes when you put her in the next game please along with aya please.

They’re my favorite Hex character too (not counting Rebecha) so I’m more than happy to do this for them

Favorite thing about them: I genuinely love their character design—the use of the missing texture “?” that appears with some engines for their face is really clever (and also I just like “silhouette” type characters in general—a character who is mostly just a black featureless figure but with maybe one or two defining characteristics is my favorite sort of character design. So maybe I’m biased in that regard).

Least favorite thing about them: You can’t see their shoes in Walk? That was one of two parts of their character model that are actually textured—we should be able to look down and see their shoes when they walk too (then again I haven’t played a lot of actual walking simulators so I don’t know if that’s par-for-the-course or not. Still though, it was shown on their 2D model, it should be shown on their 3D model too, damn it!)

Favorite line: I’d love to be funny here but ???, by merit of not having a mouth, doesn’t speak. I will say though I think it’s incredible how they still manage to have so much personality despite not actually having any dialogue. The subtle variation in the length of ellipsis/the text speed was a really cool way of showing that without expressions.

(Though why they didn’t just… write things down though is beyond me—guess the Six-Pint Inn doesn’t have any pens and cocktail napkins).

brOTP: I already talked about this in the Rebecha post, but I genuinely think the two of them would be good friends. Rebecha’s pretty neutral on everyone, it’d be nice if she actually had someone she could talk casually with instead of everyone else talking at her like usual. Plus she’s the only one who actually refers to FPP with a name (even if it’s pretty clearly a placeholder, “Faceless Joe” definitely isn’t something FPP picked personally) and acknowledges their existence outside of extreme suspicion. They interact Literally Once so there’s no real basis for it but I just think they should be friends, y’know?

OTP: I don’t ship them with anyone. (To the surprise of everyone reading this, I’m sure (I say that sarcastically))

nOTP: Haven’t seen any ships for this guy at all. As per usual I probably wouldn’t hate any if I saw them either (provided people aren’t being freaks but I hope that’s a given).

Random headcanon: I’m sure this is a pretty standard headcanon among all 3.5 people who have played the Hex but I generally use they/them for this guy just because I feel they’d want to establish themself as a separate person from just “stand-in for Lionel” and for them pronouns are a part of that—just to say “I’m not Lionel and I’m not really a man either.” I don’t know, it just feels right.

Unpopular opinion: Considering there’s maybe five people total who played the Hex I don’t think there’s any unpopular opinions for this guy.

Song I associate with them: The obvious joke answer is I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers but I’d rather give an actual answer too. I’ll tentatively say Protagonist by They Might Be Giants (which is equally a Lionel song, but it feels like something they’d have to hear about on the daily). And I’ll add Vow of Silence by Lemon Demon too, why not.

Favorite picture of them: There’s unfortunately not many pictures of FPP; I’d love to snag a picture of their model from Walk because that’s my favorite part of the Hex stylistically, but… that’s not exactly feasible on account of the fact that they’re Just Hands. When he's ice, his eyes aren't eyes anymore. They're just ice, no rods no cones no nothing. He realised this at some point and freaked out. The fact that when he's in his ice form, his senses are fake. It's just a general situational awareness that he's experiencing as vision, hearing etc. And his entire ice body is so weird when he thinks about it. It's formless, boundary-less, undying. It's not really a body or even an object at all.

Then he has to go lie down for a bit.

A NOTP I have with said character: Khadgar. I sort of got a flirty impression between them in WoD & it also meets my 'proximity' requierment for a ship to have a basis. But I just don't really love them together.

General Opinion over said character: Like Kel'Thuzad, Modera is an extremly powerful character. Not only does she has the might of an archmage, but she is also the longest serving member of the council of six. Presumably, she has all the wealth and influence that accompanies that. These are some of the facts i keep in mind when I write her. Hopefully she comes off as an interesting and fleshed out character, even if some of the details are fudged (explorers league stuff for example)

A ship I have with said character: angebinah has been growing on me a lot.. what if we were fucked up agender ppl and we found the most comfort in one another.

A BROTP I have with said character: this one is very difficult, so i think i have to go with binah yet again! they work well together both platonically and otherwise due to the eternity they both had to suffer. both binah and angela are right to be mad -- all of the sephirot are, but its these two who you're with at the very beginning and in the very end that are the most uncanny about it. rather than making passive-aggressive comments towards X like malkuth, or lamenting that having hope is a mistake like chesed, they both keep a calm disposition and exact a sort of "strange" self expression. binah is most known for their bluntness and its mysterious comments. meanwhile angela continues to say many of the same things over and over, coping by playing into this loop of nothingness he has suffered. as such, she and binah, with the most outer awareness, may find a bit of comfort in one another. perhaps their shared maturity will make the infinite expanse of time a bit more bearable.

A NOTP I have with said character: angelayin. should be a given considering i just went on this longwinded rant about how angela and everyone else has the right to be mad at ayin. and yet... :agony:

A random headcanon: i see a lot of jokes and things about how angela and carmen would have had a horrible rivalry with one another, but regardless of if theyd get along i think angela would have liked to meet carmen. especially by the time the player meets angela, where its ideals and opinions on the corporation - carmen's creation - have been so skewed by her own experiences. and i think that's a large part of angela as a whole, the fact that he never got to see first hand who inspired her existence. General Opinion over said character: angela is the pinnacle of "anti-villain" i think! she has every right to be angry and there's no denying that they have played a part in how the corporation's poisonous roots have spread, but in both lobotomy corporation and library of ruina it is angela who is the real catalyst of bittersweet closure. OVERALL. I LOVE ANGELA.!! they are a great example of anger and the desire to move forward coexisting and that is very important. UMUM BUT I RLLY DO LIKE ANGELA A LOT all these rants and things tend to be on the more serious/analytical side which makes my feelings drowned out but angela is genuinely one of my favorite ever characters it means the world to me hehehe.

A ship I have with said character: i think gebuhod have a very special relationship, especially as gebura grows as a person! from the beginning their interactions are far more mutually respectful, with gebura and hod both mutually being able to talk about one anothers thoughts and opinions in an intimate manner that most of the other sephirot don't really share with one another so early on. however gebura growing to see the strengths in mists peers is where i think the relationship manages to bloom. a lot of hod's story and values center around her desires to be loved and helpful and his decisions as a result. meanwhile, gebura values life so much that it is the emotional side that very belief that gets cast aside in favor of fighting against the abnormalities. gebuhod cater to one anothers feelings in a way that they serve to inspire growth in one another - by regaining real love both gebura and hod improve in the way they interact with others and with themselves and their own departments. in library of ruina especially, gebura is seen having fun and enjoying its time with mists peers who she has learned to accept and trust, while hod is seen in a new more confident and self-respecting light. these are things they both really, really needed.

A BROTP I have with said character: while gebuhod is definitely the peak of gebura showing love an acceptance towards those around, i think she and netzach are similarly very nicely intertwined in the way they interact. netzach is shown to be a bit more apologetic in his shortcomings towards gebura than most others, and in return gebura is a bit less harsh towards it. this small, rather unlikely air of mutual respect is a great example of both gebura seeing value in all life, but in mist once again being able to accept and trust its fellow sephirot. if gebura can get along with and see merit in netzach of all people, then she can do it with anyone.!!

A NOTP I have with said character: chesbura is??? i really appreciate the role they play in each others growth as chesed learns to relate to the hope and passion gebura displays while gebura learns to be more understanding and trusting of chesed and his decisions, but becoming good teammates is far from becoming a healthy relationship. i don't doubt that they value each other, but they have also both hurt each other. plus the way that its portrayed also always manages to defeat the purpose of both gebura and chesed as characters?? ermm??

A random headcanon: this is a little bit less of a hc and more of an observation?? but i really do think gebura is not hard to get along with when mist is shown mutual respect. and perhaps that's why she gets along with netzach more than one may think - netzach has a sort of self awareness that gebura values. gebura has so much conflict with chesed because he refuses to see mists views, and in turn that makes gebura less inclined to do the same for chesed. meanwhile, gebura has far better interactions with hod because they are mutually open with one another, etc. its a lack of fairness that makes gebura appear so jaded.

General Opinion over said character: GEBURA IS SO IMPORTANT ARRHGH. as much as i love all the middle sephirot i do think that it's gebura who has the most driven story and enjoyable interactions. there's always a reason and belief and passion behind its words and that means the world. SIMILAR TO ANGELA I LOOOVE GEBURA VV MUCH. HEHE

One of the things that does confuse me about a lot of the Steddy Hands content is that it centers Izzy. Both like physically by putting him between Ed and Stede in a lot of the art and emotionally, by like making Izzy's enjoyment or desire the center of attention in an art or fan work. This wouldn't strike me as odd if it was just some of the fan work but it's practically all of it. It doesn't make sense to me, because both Izzy and Stede in canon are simping hard for Ed and Izzy and Stede getting along well enough to date or have sex is frankly Ed's fantasy if it's anyone's (at least prior to episode 7 Ed just wants Izzy and Stede to get along well enough to not kill each other or try to make him do it). If you're gonna center someone's feelings it should be Ed's because his are the most conducive to Steddy Hands working. If you're gonna put someone in the middle it should be Ed because of how down horrendous for him the other two parties are in the source material, right? It is confusing to me.

Favorite thing about them: I wouldn’t say this is my favorite thing about it, but genuinely one of the funniest scenes in the Hex is when it’s inexplicably in video game jail. The answer to that is “Irving is an asshole” obviously, but the juxtaposition of Training Dummy next to an alligator, a giant dragon, a giant radioactive snake-worm, and Sado was a punch to the face. Free training dummy it did nothing wrong.

Least favorite thing about them: There’s nothing to dislike here. If you’re not a Training Dummy fan I don’t want you on this blog (I’m joking, but Training Dummy is… weirdly relevant here.)

Random headcanon: I know for a fact this is stolen from you but the concept of every game made using the Gameworks Engine having the Training Dummy somewhere in-game is hilarious to me. It’s like the video game equivalent of the Wilhelm scream. Every game designer HATES seeing it in the final game because it RUINS immersion most of the time but that just makes programmers even more tempted to sneak it in somewhere as a sort of game development inside joke. Having said that, from an in-character point of view this either means multiple training dummies or multiple reassignments so good luck to this guy either way.

Unpopular opinion: I was going to jokingly say Training Dummy should have been a talking card but I quickly realized that probably wouldn’t work. I don’t even know if the Training Dummy would have the required level of sentience to be inscrybed as anything other than a terrain card. As funny as it would be if it was secretly a person I’m pretty sure it’s Literally Just A Mannequin (maybe not? It does have custom inner dialogue when you challenge it with an invalid deck but it’s really unclear whether that’s meant to imply the Training Dummy is a person or if it was just for the bit). Sorry buddy </3

I know you've written about Arthur/Mary, but do you have thoughts about other ships with Arthur? I'm curious to hear if you ship him with someone else or NOTPs you might have.

Hey, thanks for this question!

Generally, I ship Mary/Arthur but I'm super agnostic when it comes to shipping him. That means, I can be convinced of his other ships or am happy for people who like a different pair. As for NOTPs, I have to say I don't understand any of the following: Arthur/Reader, Arthur/Dutch, Arthur/John, and Arthur/Micah.

In listing all that, I just realized I actually am not as ship-agnostic as I thought, but basically I derive pleasure from shipping existing content, and if the ship contradicts canon content (i.e. how Arthur feels about John as his brother or Micah as his archnemesis), then it's harder for me to picture it. I am not judging people who ship those pairs, to be clear. I think people should ship what they want. Those pairs are, personally, not my cup of tea.

Besides Mary/Arthur, the only ship I feel strongly about is Charlotte/Arthur for a few reasons.

1. Charlotte is kind of a parallel universe Mary - they're both rich girls with verbal confirmation of having overbearing fathers, and unlike other high society women, they don't shy away from the wilderness and all its ugliness. Not to mention, they're both nominally widows! It's interesting to me that the first time you see Charlotte, she is crying at her late husband's grave -- a fate that Mary will have by the end credits of RDR2 (though not her husband's/Mr. Linton's.Rather, she is weeping at Arthur's grave, her true love). So one can argue Charlotte falls under Arthur's type. She isn't necessarily a replacement for Mary (I don't think anyone can replace Mary in Arthur's affections). Rather, I see her as embodying a lot of the qualities and traits that might have led Arthur to fall in love with Mary.

2. As such, it's only natural that Charlotte and Arthur quickly become friends and (despite the rather obvious oopsie on R*'s part with the journal) become important figures for each other. It's telling that John tells Charlotte that Arthur wrote fondly of her, a fate that not many Strangers get in the epilogue. And it is equally as telling that Charlotte is seemingly reborn after having met Arthur, fully leaving behind her past with her husband and embracing the survivalist lifestyle Arthur had taught her for years to come.

3. Relatedly, I can easily picture Arthur in a different universe having a similar experience teaching Mary how to shoot gun, the same way he taught Charlotte. Charlotte's stranger mission chain is an AU of sorts - what might have happened if Mary had run off with Arthur. They're kind of in a pastoral setting too, enclosed by rock formations and a river. The gang also never enters into their conversations (note that most chapter 6 stranger missions have Arthur mentioning the gang less with others, and this in part has to do with the fact that he's unconsciously beginning to part with the gang as his identity).

4. But like I said Charlotte isn't just another Mary. I think she has her own personal chemistry with Arthur that make her unique compared to other widows in the game (say Sadie, who still loves her husband above other men, including Arthur). Charlotte is not that different from Arthur: she puts herself down; constantly says she'd be dead if not for him; that her efforts at learning how to hunt and shoot make her look like an idiot. Does any of this sound familiar? Sounds a lot like how Arthur used to speak of Dutch before the disenchantment came in, right? More importantly, they just have a very similar disposition of self-deprecation and wit. It's funny how much Charlotte makes fun of her late husband, it's the exact same style of affection Arthur shows to people closest to him (i.e., he makes fun of them). So on those little things, I can easily picture them bantering and getting along in a way that can make room for shared understanding and tenderness. The only other character I can see having this relationship with Arthur on those points is... well, Mary!

5. This is kind of circling back to point #1, but I noticed that Arthur seems more in tune with his true self whenever he hangs out with people whose social class is above his. Albert Mason, Mary Linton, Charles Chatenay, Rains Fall (a chief!!!), and Charlotte... Notice too that the younger gang member he was grooming to move up in the VDL gang is Lenny, the son of a freedman who was brought up to be a lawyer, and whose literacy and maturity are defining traits to Arthur. It's not necessarily an aspiration of his to move up in terms of social class, but I think it's telling that otherwise learned, intelligent, and worldlier people than the ones he hang out with can level with him. More often than not, these people of higher stations actually look up to Arthur, and Charlotte is no exception, crediting him with saving her life and teaching her how to live. So along those lines, I can easily picture Charlotte and Arthur talking all night about a book they read, or frolicking in some meadow and looking for plants and birds to draw in his journal. And it'd be just as likely for Charlotte to be knowledgeable on these things as Arthur is from a book-learning perspective!

Anyway I ended up rambling, but those are my thoughts on other ships.
