Not enough people talking about the “Laudna coming back for Imogen” part of Laudna’s resurrection. The part where when Laudna, who has spent so much of her life in suffering, living a cursed existence, is finally offered a peaceful rest, she chooses to return to Imogen. The part where in the midst of reliving all her worst memories and traumas, she sees Imogen and reaches for her. The part where Laudna is offered the choice between the rest she has been denied for so long and returning to Imogen and she chooses Imogen. The part where there is nowhere Laudna would rather be than with Imogen.

On a more genuine note from my previous post though: I do not think Imodna will go the same way as Vaxleth for a few reasons.

Vax's story was very personal to Liam. It always frustrates me when people act like the Raven Queen 'took Vax away' (and thus she is a bad goddess) when in fact she answered his prayer and granted his wish. Vax's story is about "Take me instead!" - not some kind of "Don't let Vex die!", and certainly not someone who was raised from the dead without their consent and bound like a puppet. Unless such an ending is expressly what Marisha wants for her character, I don't see it being narratively satisfying. Even if Laudna dies in sacrifice to save the others, because of the breadth of Delilah's power, it would be more of a general "I'm dying to save everyone" and less personal (and impactful) than Vax's trading his life for Vex's.

I joked about how this is Delilah Briarwood vs Laura Bailey again, so don't sweat it, but it's true! The players play their characters differently. Liam loves tragedy and plays it well; Laura loves romance and plays it well. Percy also had a dark streak with a hunger for power, and Vex would not let him go. I see more parallels with themes like: "I feel cruel, but in control." and "Take the mask off." Meanwhile, Imogen and Keyleth are different characters and their love interests have different relationships with death. In the end, the reason Keyleth could not do anything against the Raven Queen isn't because she's a god and Keyleth is not, but because Vax - as a paladin - chose to honour his faith and uphold his end of the deal. Imogen is not in that position because Laudna is not in that position. Laudna may see herself as just a puppet, or a risk, or a dead end - but we the audience, and Imogen, know that she is not (maybe a bit of a calculated risk). If anything, I see us on the precipice of an arc of Imogen inspiring Laudna to fight for her independence again and figuring out a way to do that (this is a world of magic after all).

And that theme of fighting for independence is something that has been there since the beginning. We have seen it both in analysis and confirmed on 4SD that Laudna's relationship with Delilah is in many ways similar to struggling with addiction. And now, into year three of C3, we are really seeing that take form when things get rough. When things get out of control, when you get desperate, that's when you grasp at anything to make it easier. It would be a real kick in the teeth to have her not overcome that struggle. Of course, there's the possibility that she does overcome that struggle by getting rid of Delilah and dying as a result. But out of game it has been referred to more in line with addiction that is constantly managed rather than addiction that is ended cold turkey - which for some people is the only way. I'll admit this one is more a personal preference but I do see it overall leaving a bad taste if Laudna were to die from Delilah in some way (again). Presuming they resolve issues with the solstice and resurrection spells, True Resurrection does exist and I'm certain the Hells would work off a 25k GP debt to bring Laudna back for good (which I see as more of a final episode/epilogue/post-game situation).

Regardless, it's a beautiful story and I'm sure that whatever happens will be what the players want. However, in this case I genuinely don't see them repeating something they have done before. Although we saw many parallels last night, there is still much which sets Imodna and Vaxleth apart narratively.

Today marks one whole year since I discovered Dimension 20 and the world of TTRPG actual plays! It's hard to explain how important these have been to me, but they filled a hole in my life that I was really struggling with while recovering from a substantial burnout. The kindness and creativity that I've watched has inspired me, comforted me and brought me hope.

I'm going to shove some rambling thoughts about things I've enjoyed under a cut here.

Dimension 20 has been such a source of laughter and enjoyment and a reminder that people are fundamentally kind at heart. They are such generous players. Watching them tackle such a wide range of issues with sensitivity and also kind humour has been a beautiful experience, and D20 has really helped me to understand myself and also why I love my own friends so much. “The real friends, the ones that make miracles happen, the ones greater than any treasure you could find on any adventure, they see the wolf in you and love it too.”

Critical Role has made me cry and laugh in equal measures and often right when I needed it. I've watched C2 and am working my way through C3 and will definitely watch C1.

Failed Save was such a blast and it was a delight to watch players who clearly just love making their friends laugh and cry. Honourable mention specifically to the Borrows Saga: Banesbreak, where Aabria Iyengar, Omar Najam and Saige Ryan are absolutely wonderful.

Battle for Beyond should be compulsory watching for everyone and it is a crime that there has been no second season yet.

Critical Fayle and the Goon's 'Strahdcast' has warmed my heart and Winnie "gourd of the year" "boss of werewolves" Winchester is so special to me.

And Worlds Beyond Number... Well I can't wait to be swept along on the journey for years and years to come.

This year I hope to be brave enough to find and join a TTRPG.

EXU: Calamity ep 4 predictions for each character:

Cerrit doesn't even know yet that the Betrayers broke free (unless it'll be a "everyone knows the moment Matron of Ravens ascended" type of knowledge) and he's flying home to meet his kids. But would Brennan (through Kir) mention Sourcerous Academy if he wasn't going to make Cerrit go there? I think there will be attack on the school and Cerrit will go there to try and rescue his kids and others if he can. I also have a feeling like one of his kids will die before/right as he gets there and Cerrit would in theory have a chance to gtfo from Avalir by using second Rune of recalling but strucken by grief and seeing all hell break loose around him, he'll give the second rune to some random kid and will go back to fight (which will bring him back to the Ring of Brass).

Laerryn and Quay will die but it won't be a tragically romantic end where they die in each others arms. I think Quay will fall in the battle (he's squishy and self-sacrificing when it comes to his friends and his love) and Laerryn will have to keep fighting knowing that there's no much hope left, seeing her friends die by the hand of gods, something even she won't be able to protect them from. She'll try to come up with something clever, because that's what she's about but in the end will have to face the truth and admit that there's nothing more to be done.

Patia has all the knowledge now, she knows what they have done and I can't wait to see if it breaks through her mask of perfect composure. But more importantly: she's probably going to try and preserve the knowledge she got using her powers, not really trying to share it, because it doesn't seem helpful, but preserving the knowledge for someone who will come later (creating a possible link in C3). I feel like she will join Nydas in trying to stop the descent (despite doing so with a heavy heart since Laerryn seems like her close friend. But Marisha made a point of showing that Cerrit's words about "incredible selfish actions" affected Patia). Also, she may want to try and contact the Septarion or Eldamir the Wise for help but he probably has been already killed by Loras.

Zerxus won't be spared; Asmodeus promised him that he'll remember him and nothing else. He may be given more infernal powers, maybe even be named a lieutenant of Hell or something similar (Xartaza saying "It'll be an honour to serve you", like she knows something), but this won't be the Zerxus we met at the beginning of the series (corruption arc - speedrun by Lord of Hells). Alternatively, he may realise in the last moment of clarity (because he remembers Evandrin, or Elias or sees his friends bloodied and suffering) that Asmodeus was tricking him all that time and unleash on his divine anger on the Devil (still, I think Lord of Hells has a few tricks up his sleeve and could command Zerxus to serve him or even attack his friends. It wouldn't be that difficult with Zerxux's Wisdom being only 11).

I believe Nydas may be the one to actually make it to Cathmoira, but this won't be a blessing - watching the chaos unfold, the destruction and panic all around, maybe even get to see his family broken and injuried if not entirely wiped out. He was the one to learn the prophesy first, he wanted to stop everything from happening and wasn't afraid to act on it (trying to stop Laerryn in contrast to Patia wanting to learn more about the Tree and Zerxus going for that druidic parchment) so it'll be even more tragic if he was the one to live (no matter how long) with the knowlegde of what they have done, the weight of truth dragging him down. Because the Calamity lasted for over the century and there's no way Nydas would be alive for long enough to see the end of it.

Am I going to be wrong about most of it? Probably. But hey, it's fun to imagine how much Brennan can fuck us up!

I don’t care if you loved, hated, or felt meh about the end of campaign 2

I care when people try to pretend there is the remotest moral implications for ANY of those feelings, or that feeling the “wrong” way makes someone a lesser person

People aren’t “not as smart” as you for feeling a different way about the end of a story

Doesn’t matter that you saw all these hints and bits and pieces that fit perfectly/were completely abandoned

Doesn’t matter if they want a different kind of narrative, catharsis, or even just plain explicit, unmistakeable rep

(Hola shadowgast, poor lads were like 7 hours in and forgot how many of us were raised on “oh but they might be more than friends 😘”

Also the demi Essek reveal, love to have it, respect Matt wasn’t sure how to bring it up in game (honourable mention trans Yussa Erenis, lookit all this wizard rep), still woulda felt just as good both ways)

Like I get this is the age of “all of you are so uneducated my take is PERFECTION INCARNATE AND I CAN PROVE IT” but… just

Take a moment to remove all those little quality indicators

Accept other peoples’ reasons for feeling the way they do are perfectly valid, reasonable, and still won’t change how you feel because Your Feelings Are Valid Too

And they won’t change how other people feel, and nor should they

Personally, I’m Children Of Earth-ing 141 because all of Matt’s favourite ending tropes are my Least Favourite Most Hated Endings Of All Time, and I’ll happily commiserate with anyone who wants to join me

But it makes me so happy when I see people say they loved the ending, that it was everything they wanted and perfect (not least because you’ll probably love all the other endings too! Vox Machina’s was very similar and I’d be STUNNED if c3 broke the pattern!)

Something may not be for me, but so long as it resonated with someone else, as long as it made you guys light up like the dang sun, it was good, and valuable, and worthwhile

(And yes it did take me like a year of crankiness and grumbles to get here and it is still a work in progress, but it’s just so much nicer than trying to shoot down someone else’s joy? It’s way more fun to lean in and I’m taking this mindset to everything else I love forever)

It’s a good way to remind myself that even when people think completely differently and do shit I would never, that there’s some worth and joy to be found in doing shit that way

It lets me expand my horizons and look at why I feel the way I do about things and question if there’s something I’ve missed, because there nearly always is

We are better when we’re together and when we remember to respect each other as people, ESPECIALLY when we disagree over the little shit

There’s always fixit fic for shit you hated and canon compliance for shit you love, and talking to someone who truly loved something you didn’t see the value in is a great way to feel better about it

Talking to people who didn’t like something you loved is a great way remind yourself that yeah, we are all different, and that is Super Fucking Good Actually (and come up with buckwild headcanons about how to make things perfect for both of you, which is always good fun)

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of “everybody who doesn’t agree with me is wrong and just can’t Think like me” but that trap leads to boring little bubbles until we’re all just breathing our own farts

No matter what divides us, we can always agree on the simple truth: Matt does not make cishet wizards and that is very sexy of him

Since the last one was so much fun to put together, I decided to do another one!

KC’s Top 5 CR Player Character Races Wishlist

(With the added bonus of who I think should play the characters on this wishlist.)

Number 1. Triton. I just think they’re super cool and I’ve always been obsessed with mermaids and I want one so bad, you guys.

Who I think should play them: Depending on the personality and aesthetic™, either Laura or Taliesin. Laura could do a super cute mermaid-aesthetic character, and Taliesin could be Yet Another Incredibly Gender Character with a deep-sea goth.

Number 2. Pachydan. I blame Aabria and Exandria Unlimited for making me obsessed with these elephant people. Also Caduceus was my fave character in C2, so another deep-voiced, wise, gentle-giant character would be right up my alley.

Who I think should play them: Honestly? I want an elephant-man wizard or sorcerer to be Travis’ first ever full caster.

Number 3. Minotaur. Listen, Sunbreaker Olumon had a life-changing effect on all of us. Bullman big sexy.

Who I think should play them: I know I just said bullman, but give me bulllady, please and thank you. Marisha or Ashley could play a big minotaur lady so well.

Number 4. Water Genasi. While I was getting caught up on C2, I was already mentally creating a wishlist of what I wanted the pc’s in C3 to be, and I had been hoping for a genasi – and then between C3 and EXU, I got three of them. Now we just need a water genasi pc to complete the set. (and yes I know we got Jester, but she was only half water genasi and mechanically, she played as a tiefling.)

Who I think should play them: Liam, most likely. Though that may just be projecting The Gentleman’s personality and appearance onto this option. I would also love to see Marisha play a more noticeably inhuman character.

Number 5. Tiny PC, like a Pixie or Sprite or Something. I literally just want a tiny little fucker in the party. Every party has to have a token shortie, and Sam has to make up for accidentally creating a Medium sized character this campaign.

Who I think should play them: Sam, obviously. He is the resident Short Character Player in the cast. Though I would also kill to see Laura play a chipper but exceptionally dangerous pixie…

Honourable mention goes to Travis playing a Tabaxi, for obvious and hilarious reasons.

Hi, I really love how you write the Critical Role characters and it actually inspired me to begin writing my own Critical Role fan fiction. I'm curious, do you worry much about writing them out of character? I've found that although I love the characters and know a lot about them I don't feel confident in writing how they act and interact with others.

Rambles ahead, so it's all under the cut!

Tldr: I do wonder if I sometimes stray into out of character territory. But it doesn't matter because all characters can be re-interpreted in different ways. Characters develop over their course of their arc, and fanfic is a way to explore that development even further but in new stories. It's a saying so often said that people brush it away, but practice does make perfect. Keep writing until you find yourself comfortable and content with characterisation, find something you like that works for you xx

I've been a creative writer for as long as I can remember, and I've done theatre even longer than that. I've always loved roleplaying and video games, spinning stories and just daydreaming in general. Getting into the mindset of a character is kinda my thing, but I do have blanks and concerns on whether or not I'm staying true to them from time to time.

I've seen posts where people nitpick and claim that fanfic writers portray Ashton too soft, or Molly too snarky, Geralt too gruff, or Yennefer too kind.

These people should have no say in how you write the character. Fanfic is a pastime, something you do for enjoyment, and can be helpful to train yourself to find a writing style you enjoy. Don't be afraid to go against the canon and online strangers' personal headcanons (as long as it is not harmful in any way). This is for you. You do not owe your readers anything.

My advice?

Keep writing. Practice makes perfect, but characters are also flawed little figments that can be interpreted and reshaped in many ways. Think of what you want this character to show/give when they are read by you or anyone else. I want to capture Caleb's hesitance to grow close to someone. This can be portrayed in different ways; physically, verbally, emotionally, etc - how do I want to do that?

Find a personality trait that you think strongly reflects the character. Try to develop it and apply it to different situations they might find themselves in. When writing Fearne, I keep her light hearted and kind, while not considering the good behind her actions. She just does it impulsively. Not necessarily because she is good, but because it's what she wants to do. She's displayed her unfiltered affection for others in EXU/C3 on many occasions. It's a core part of who she is.

Listen to music that you think the characters might enjoy! I do this all the time when planning stories for my novel - whether it's the song title, the lyrics or the music itself, I think "could this be a possible theme song for that character?" The Crane Wives have a vibe that just screams Dorian in my option - yearning, hope, feeling lost, giving and receiving love in unlikely places. *chef kiss* It him.

And lastly, don't be hard on yourself! As the writer of a piece of writing, you are super familiar with the words on the screen/page. You feel like something isn't right, or a plot point is predictable, or the dialogue might not flow - this is because you already know what's coming! We authors are our own worst critics. It's impossible to read your stuff with the same feeling and viewpoint someone else has going in blind. Be kind to yourself.

Whoop that was a lengthy post but I hope it will be of help to someone 😊 Trust the process, and don't ever give up. The end result will be totally worth it x
