Oh hey ermm real quick. Just so y'all are in the loop and don't think I'm ignoring my inbox on purpose. School is gonna be starting for me tomorrow so as well as my inconsistent motivation I'll also be a bit busier and things may take a while to be done.
My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, but of course, I do have a life outside of tumblr ^^'

The inbox is open!!!
And as always, here are the rules!
NO MORE THAN 3 ASKS PER PERSON!!! I’m only going up to 45 asks today, so this gives every one a chance to add something. I’ll know if the same person is spamming me and will be deleting~ this may change if things slow down for a while
Character limit is 10 characters! But you guys can request less if you want someone specific. If no person is requested, I default to the main 10 usually
Let’s try to avoid asks that are repeats of old masterlist asks this time. If you absolutely must have a sequel of something, add either a screenshot of the old prompt, a link to it, or the masterlist number you found it in.
What I write is on my pinned post ;). Refer to that if you aren’t sure about your ask~
And most importantly, have fun!!!

Silly two or so month check in on everyone's stance on the posting schedule! Like keeping up with what everyone wants esp if theres a chance of it changing WOO yeah baby
Option A: keep the posting schedule as it is. A queue system set to 3 posts a day, with the only exception being that it will be bumped to 4 if the queue becomes very full (45+ queued posts)
This gives the admin a chance to pace himself while aslo giving you guys at least 3 x reader posts daily, the con being it will take a while for your request to be posted. Even worse, you may miss your request due to the wait time + if you're using anon (wont get notified). The queue only applies to standard x reader posts. Reblogs, random non x reader hcs, and the "random thing" single hc posts do not follow the queue
Or
Option B: ditch the queue and post when something is completed. Pros is it greatly shortens the wait time for a request, what can sometimes be a week or more becomes maybe a few days. Less likely to get lost/forgotten by the requestor due to the shorter window. Cons is you may not get a post everyday; whether it be no requests in the inbox or the admin not having the motivation to write that day due to lack of energy or even burnout
As an aside, limiting posts via the queue also helped limit spamming from my blog in tags- on a productive day I can write anywhere between 5-10 posts in a single day, max I've had is 20 in a day but that was mostly due to me going bonkers with brainrot. Feel like it's worth mentioning because I do not want to swamp tags, even if it will be diluted between various fandoms-
I'll be doing my best to reblog this poll frequently so you guys all have a chance to choose, no tags since I want this to focus on people who follow rather than those who are passing through

I'm about to start my own (twst) writing blog and I'm going around writers that I follow for some advice q*q could you give me any wisdom on what I should do when starting a writing blog? thank you!! I love your works and you're one of the writers that inspire me
Aa thank you baby I'm so happy to hear that I inspire you!! First off, good luck with the new writing blog! I'm glad that more authors are joining the fandom and wish you all the best with your works! 💞💖💞 Other than trying to keep your blog organized by creating a proper masterlist, choosing a suitable aesthetic, having a set of rules and making sure to tag all of the warnings and necessary mentions (gender of reader, n/sfw or trigger warning), I tried to come up with some useful advises that might help!
1) Keep up the great confidence!
First and the most important thing about a writing blog, is to be confident and strong. Look, you shouldn't be afraid of posting your works and sharing with the redt of the fandom, even as they're not as perfect as you want them to be. The more you write, the more you learn! And you'd grow to be better and better as you continue to share your works! Not even the greatest authors had been any perfect on their first days!
2) If you're accepting requests, try to set a limit
Being overwhelmed with asks is never pleasant, if you just open your inbox to face 500 requests you'd be to be terrified and confused and even lose your passion to work on any of them because of the stress and not knowing where to begin from. Try to set a limit based on your personal limits, how many requests do you think you can have at the time without stressing out because of how much they are? 10? 20? 50? 100? 200? Doesn't matter! If you feel like you're fine with huge numbers like 200 and 150, it's totally fine! If not, remember that setting a character limit would not only reduce the possible chance of stressing out and overwhelming anxiety but it'll also help you manage your inbox better and easier! You can start taking requests again just as soon as your inbox in cleared!
3) Try to treat yourself every once in a while!
Working on requests can be tiring and sometimes, boring. It's great if you enjoy working on requests no matter what they are but remember to write for your own pleasure every once in a while too!
Even if you have like 100 requests laying in your inbox, feel free to write self indulgent fics or something that you'd like to write even if it's super odd an irrelevant to your normal writings! Remember that you deserve to read something you enjoy just as much as the others do, so don't forget to bless yourself with that beautiful writing of yours ;) Remember that it's your blog, you are free to do everything that makes you happy or anything that you simply enjoy doing ^^
4) Remember that no matter what, toxicity always exists and it's not your fault
Look toxicity is very common to be found social medias, especially platforms like tumblr in which anonymous function exists. Even celebrities and world-famous artists might get attacked over pretty silly stuff every once in a while so it's something usual to happen! I wish you never receive any potentially harmful or rude asks or messages but if you ever do, best would be to block or simply ignore them! People in this platform can be ridiculous sometimes lol, there are people who DM creators just to spam hate and block the creator whom they spammed after wards lol, so don't even bother t waste your time with such people!
If anyone comes to your inbox/DMs/comments to say something harsh or leave a sharp critique, best would be to ignore them. Even if you like to answer or respond to reply to them tey to be chill and not take them seriously. Remember, even if they didn't like your content they could've just scrolled down without bothering to read your work, so if they had the guts to come and spam you with nonsense just because they didn't like your work, it's their fault! They didn't have to read, and it doesn't even matter if they liked your work or not! It's their problem and all, so remember not to let these kind of people get to you at all!
5) Take it easy with writing
Don't push yourself too hard, remember that not everything you write is supposed to be *perfect. This is even more serious when it comes to requests, thousands of unexpected ideas might pop up in your inbox and it makes it quite confusing to choose what to write or do!
First off, don't be any shy or anxious about rejecting the requests which don't follow your rules or come when you aren't accepting requests. Those who violate your rules aren't worthy of your time and work!
Secondly, keep this is mind that you aren't expected to be able to write everything! Sometimes the requests are hard to write, the idea seems odd or hard to understand, or sometimes you just don't feel comfortable or don't want to write it all, which is okay!
You always have the right to take/drop whichever of your requests and you don't owe anyone anything for this, it's your own blog, your work, and your content. Don't ever force yourself to write something which you don't like to write!
6) Your health is always the top priority
Remember that no matter how popular you are, how many followers you have, how many requests are left in your inbox or how much people are wishing to get more of your content, you're free to stop writing and put this wrong at a temporarily (or even permanent) hiatus.
Sometimes you just don't feel like writing, then don't write. If you feel like you're being too busy with work/family/school and anything please don't force yourself to write! Remember that your real life matters always come first!
Also, you might even need a break from writing without necessarily being really busy or sad, sometimes you just need to take a break from everything, and it's totally fine to do! Take as much time as you need and stay healthy during your breaks. It'd be even better if you don't even think of any new ideas/Aus while you're taking a break from writing so you can fully set your mind off stuff! Doesn't even matter if followers/readers are going to appreciate this or not, it's not about them, it's about you. Remember that your good readers/follwers who understand that authors are normal humans and not writing machines would surely understand if you need to take a break too!
7)Keep yourself motivated!
There might be days when you can and have the time to write, but something's holding you back. You feel like procrastinating over and over at some point lose the motivation to write. First off, that's a really normal matter to see as many of us have to struggle with laziness sometimes lol, but there are some useful tips to keep yourself Motamedi and hyped while you're planning to write! A bit of challenge would not only make it a lot more fun, but is also a good way to keep yourself motivated and inspired!
First, try prompt lists! They've always got plenty of useful ideas and inspirational quotes to use and are absolutely amazing to give you new ideas for a writing!
Second, try to challenge yourself by simple stuff like setting yourself word limits, trying to see how much you can write in an hour, use some suggested words in your stories (ex: Banana, train, knife, turkey) as a small challenge! You can also try small events (like milestone or holiday events) to celebrate on your blog with stuff like: Prompt list requests, CYOAs, character interaction and other new stuff that gives you a better motivation tp write instead of just having to work on the same, usual writing requests over and over.
Also, I suggest putting an specific hour for writing/ checking on your blog in your daily schedule as this is also a way of avoiding procrastination, instead of writing 10 requests a day and not writing anything for two weeks, try to set an schedule like writing 1-2 writings everyday! Remember to put your real life activities in the schedule too so you won't have to go through any trouble to find a balance between your real life and running a writing blog!
8) Remember the crediting/copyrights
I'm just adding this here because I can see quite a few of writers using uncredited art for their stories and it's been much and less of an issue lately ^^;
First off, the arts/headers used in your writing. Make sure not to use any uncredited card or anyone else's edit without their permission, otherwise it's nothing different from stealing the work from the original artst!
If you're going to leave a link to the artist, make sure to check on them and check if they allow reposts with credit or not. If they don't, don't use their art. If they do, make sure to give them a proper credit with a link to them! (:
Editors too on the other hand spend a very long time making their edits and and aesthetics, so not copying their work is just as important as not stealing art from the artsits!
Pinterest is filled with uncredited art and if there's a pinterest art who is not linked to the original artist, putting the empty pinterest pin link would be useless and steal counted as stealing art.
9) Stick with your own writing style!
Writing style is like signature, everyone's got their very own and unique writing style. From the way you portray characters to what elements you use as the story develops, you're totally different from each and every of other authors in this fandom!
You may sometimes wonder if your writing style is any good at all while you look at other creators writings and feel the difference, and I gotta say: It doesn't even matter what others are doing! All that is important, is you.
Don't try to change your style to become close another writer's style, your own style is great as it already is! Even if you aren't yet that experienced with writing and feel like your writing could be better, remember that your writing skills will indeed improve as you continue to write and read newer and newer stuff, so don't worry about it!
Each and every writing style has got its own beauty, not everyone may totally enjoy your style at first but and as you continue to write, you'd get to learn what makes people enjoy your writing even more or how you can attract new readers with your writings, your style will change for the better as you write!
Though it's totally fine if you feel like there are writers who inspire and motivate you, remember that you won't have to be them in order to improve! You don't need to be just like them to be great! Even if you do have some issues like being a non-native speaker which can make it quite hard for you to write, you'd automatically learn and have most of your errors fixed as the time passes. I made LOTS of mistakes in my first writings but I hardly ever make any mistakes now because I'm used to it! Though it was a bit late I finally recognized my mistakes and corrected them! And I'd continue to correct more of my mistakes as I continue to write!
10) It's very good to have different writer mutuals
This one is rather optional, just a small recommendation! Though there are many writers who might recommend this as a rather important factor for running a writing blog, I'd say that this isn't necessary as there are still well-known tumblr authors and even twst authors who gained attention to themselves on their own and not with the help and support of any mutuals or writer friends, so it isn't impossible to be successful even without having any mutuals!
The thing with having mutuals is that it makes everything easier. A totally new twst blog can gain around 100 followers on its first without even posting anything more than a writing and a list of rules only because of being supported and boosted by well-known blogs while a for normal blog without any support or boosting, it may take up to 2-3 weeks or even an entire month to gain that 100!
Also, getting to talk with different authors (especially those who are more experienced than you) is motivational and heartwarming, you can feel like you have a team to belong to. You can discuss different writing ideas/issues/blog chores with them and see what they may think. You can even have their support with new ideas if you feel stuck/unmotivated while writing a piece!
I didn't have any mutuals on my first days either and I admit that this made things a bit hard, but it didn't hold me back from continuing to write! Yet I admit that it's surely very useful to have a couple of writer friends around you whom you can share your ideas with! Mutuals support each other, reblog each other's works and give each other a better chance of having their works read by more users, which is quite amazing and helpful!
11) Go for it and don't give up!
Remember that no one, not even the greatest writing blogs have been perfect on their first days. They weren't well-known back then either! And they wouldn't have been any successful today without being hard-working and strong. Leaving up to the previous 10 rules is the hardest part of having a blog, and it's all about not giving up!
Do not try to judge your writing and talents based on the amount of notes your posts get or how many followers you have, because these aren't ever going to show your true worth and talents! But I assure you, if you continue to write even through your hard days, your unmotivated days and your sad days no matter how hard it's supposed to be, everything will change. The more you write, the higher the chance of having new people find and read your works would be! Keeping up the hard work and believing in yourself is the key to achieving anything you may wish for, even having a successful writing blog!
As you continue to write, you'll get more readers, more notes on your posts, more followers and more people who enjoy your content!
Tumblr media
Hope that these are helpful, wish you all the greatest and good luck with your writing blog!!💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞

Top 10 Must Have Android Apps which I use daily.
Productivity Apps
1. Solid Explorer File Manager. [Free & Paid] 🔐http://neatbytes.com/solidexplorer/
Playstore – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2
PlayStore Rating 4.4 / 5
Best Features
Tumblr media
Best Features
Solid Explorer covers almost all of the beats you’d expect from a file manager nearly flawlessly. Collections allow you to view all of your photos, music, and videos in one place. You can connect your cloud storage accounts like Dropbox to manage your files remotely. It also has support for remote access protocols like FTP and you can even use it as a root file manager. Even for advanced users, it packs a punch.
On top of all this, it’s also gorgeous. While most file managers have a design stuck somewhere between 2009 and the stone age, Solid Explorer makes it a priority to adhere to Google’s Material Design spec. You can also customize your themes and colors and even choose between light and dark themes, because there’s really no reason a file manager should blind you.
Improvements required areas
While we prefer to choose a free app when we can, Solid Explorer doesn’t fall into that camp. You can try it for free for two weeks, but after that, you’ll have to shell out $2 to keep using it. On top of that, the company also charges for some plugins like Mega, and even offers additional icon packs for more money. This is annoying, but most of the add-ons are either free or optional. The upside is that you at least know where Solid Explorer is getting its money from. Since our last pick was pulled for adding sketchy adware, we’ll call this a mixed blessing, rather than an outright negative.
The Competition.
The free version of ES File Explorer may have lost our recommendation, but if you don’t want to say goodbye, you should at least check out ES File Explorer Pro. For a small amount, all of the embedded app “suggestions” and junkware are removed, and there are no ads. It still has all the bells and whistles we used to like, including remote file access, ZIP support, and an app manager. Of course, most of those same features are in Solid Explorer for a dollar less.
2. Safe In Cloud Pro [Password Manager] [Free & Paid] 🏅
https://safe-in-cloud.com/en/
Playstore – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.safeincloud.free
PlayStore Rating 4.8 / 5
Tumblr media
Features and utilities
Despite being free for desktops and very competitively-priced for mobile devices, SafeInCloud still offers a great selection of extra features. For starters, it can be used to store passwords, but also to remember credit card numbers, ID details, and pretty much any other sensitive information. These can be added fast and efficiently with one of the built-in templates.
SafeInCloud also features a powerful password generator and strength analysis tool. In short, this assesses the strength and estimated crack time for each password, flagging those that are too weak.
The program is also compatible with Apple Watch and Android Wear smartwatches. Browser extensions are available to streamline web use and provide autofill functionality, and you can even import existing data from other programs to the desktop app.
Interface and performance
SafeInCloud works with a Windows 10 laptop and the Google Chrome browser extension. The desktop interface is somewhat outdated, but it remains simple and intuitive. Important options are available across the top of the window, passwords and accounts are listed in the center, and different password/information categories can be accessed via the panel on the left of screen.
When it comes to performance, SafeInCloud is great, and adding a new password is extremely easy. Simply type the website, username/email address, and password into the app and hit enter. Login details for saved websites can then be filled with a single click on the browser extension.
3. Soul Browser [Free & Paid] – A little gem you’ve probably never heard of .. 🥇Playstore – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycompany.app.soulbrowser&hl=en_IN&gl=US

4. TickTick : ToDo List Planner, Reminder & Calendar [Free & Paid] – Best Todo So Far
Playstore – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ticktick.task&hl=en_IN&gl=US
PlayStore Rating 4.6 / 5
Tumblr media
Finding a to-do app that’s right for you is as much about finding an app you like as one that has the right features for the way you work. TickTick is a cross-platform and collaborative to-do app that has a few neat features suited to the Getting Things Done method of working. You can create custom task views, for example, and there’s an inbox for jotting down anything that pops into your head. Overall, TickTick is a good app, but its free version has too many restrictions to be worth using long term. There’s more room for improvement beyond beefing up the free app, as some features didn’t work as expected or were hard to find. If TickTick doesn’t quite meet your needs, try one of our two Editors’ Choices: Todoist Premium or Asana.
TickTick offers a free account, as well as a paid Premium plan that costs $2.79 per month or $27.99 per year. The Mac app lists the price as $2.99 per month, but I can confirm I was billed $2.79 via the web app.

[#2] Alfie Solomons With An Ace!S/O
Heyyy it’s been like, forever since i did one of these but regardless here i am with another one UwU. If you hav any requests or suggestions you can leave them either in my ask/submission box or in the comments on this post. I think that @time-is-a-lake suggested these, so thanks for that broski ;) These are a little longer than my last ones, but i hope you enjoy them anyway.
Tumblr media
- So since this takes place in 1920's Birmingham and asexuality was most recently recognized officially in 2001 by a dude named David Jay, you can already imagine the mild amount of confusion people you try to explain this to would have
- Assuming you've watched Peaky Blinders (if not then you may very likely not understand what im about to say), the show is pretty much full of sex. Like, every other episode. Just basing it off of my basic knowledge of Birmingham in the 1920's and the whole operation they had going on there i would assume that this would be considered not only weird, but inherently abnormal in terms of physical health
- Now we know that that's not the case and that its natural for some to not  identify with a generalized sexuality, but due to social and medical beliefs at the time, telling you big bear of a mans would probably raise some red flags for him
- He's never really been the type to listen to what people say unless it's important, or listen to what people say if they're criticizing his partner, but in this case he might view it as a medical issue
- The first time you tell him he's a little confused. It’s up to you whether or not you're actually going to be direct about it, but he'll initially assume it's because you're not attracted to him in particular
- Maybe you've gotten tired of him? Maybe this is just another way of saying you wanna back out? Or maybe-
- generally after an explanation, he'll get it a little more but still have questions
- "Is it like,, some sort-of malfunction. Y'know, in yeh head???" ( forgive me i cant write accents ) Alfie doesn't exactly get it at first because that cant be normal, right??? It just doesn't make sense??? Isn't it human nature to want to breed??? Needless to say this sort of challenges his whole thought process in terms of human biology even though his knowledge is a bit limited due to A) the time period and B) because he hasn't really had an education like that (he's intelligent, don't get me wrong, but the public education consisted of the "Three R's" which were reading, writing and arithmetic and some semblance of physical education and that was for boys. So you can assume the amount of education he had, excluding the fact that he's jewish and grew up in a complicated situation (see bottom for cited source))
- Regardless, even if he did have medical knowledge that was advanced for the time he still wouldn't know much about this so he has A LOT of questions
- Initially he's going to ask if you don't "y'know, get it up" or something like that. Explaining how it works and the limits and idea to your sexuality generally takes some time for him to understand and process fully since it isn't really considered natural in this time period. It kind of takes a while to accept it as well since he (believe it or not) thinks it's partially his fault
- In some way he's going to think it's because he failed somehow. He knows subconsciously he couldn't have done anything to "fix" it even though theres nothing wrong with you but he's half convinced its because he's not attractive. Keep in mind, he's had pretty much no experience with this, so bear with him. He straight up doesn't know what the fuck to do.
- Some reassurance goes a long way in these sorts of situations, however. You're probably going to have to let him know that it’s really, honestly nothing he did and that you're always been like this. You don't love him anybody less than you would if you WERE sexually engaged, and in turn he loves you just the same as well
- It takes some getting used to, but honestly he's overjoyed that you two didn't break it off just because of that. It turns out not really affecting your life together that much since he can just "take care of it" by himself and get it over with, but his attitude towards you doesn't change much...or at least it doesn't change much after a while of being together (dude finds himself getting them “urges” but he DOESN’T want to make you feel pressured to take care of his problems so he doesnt say shit about it)
- Initially he's sort of afraid that certain touches will make you uncomfortable. Like sitting in his lap? He views that as inherently sexual and so if you DO do that he's automatically going to think 'but i thought you said???' And just furrow his brows for a little bit. BUT after eventually seeing that it DOESN'T have to be sexual he sorta finds himself enjoying it
- Like YES please sit in his lap and read to him, he's so soft for all that sweet shit that it's sickening. It takes a while to get used to, but he eventually figures out that it's really not worth breaking up over. you're still you and you're still his Ride Or Die Partner In CrimeTM so it's fine with him. You still mean the world to him anyway, and he will constantly remind you of it regardless of what others may think
- But even if you believe his approval is all you want, god forbid anyone say something negative about you
- This man defends his pride and joy like it isn't anyone else's business (cause its not really), and someone WILL get their brains blown out of the other side of their head if they say a damn thing that sounds less than friendly. "Is it broke?" Or "Must have a screw loose in the head." Or anything along those lines will not fly. Unless you deliberately tell him not too he will definitely- ehem -“get rid of the problem”. But he might do it anyway even if you tell him not to because he's just like that - -;
- Overall, he's a bit confused and conflicted at first, but eventually learns to accept it how it is. He's definitely going to have some questions, and will probably always be getting used to it due to how rare it is, but he still loves you regardless of this. Boyfriend rating : 9/10 needs some improvement the first few weeks but overall one of the best after the improvement period

Anonymous asked: I know you from your past posts that you go shooting for grouse and other game birds. As luck would have it I have been invited to a shoot up in Scotland.  I have had some lessons in clay pigeon shooting but I’ve never shot game birds. What advice would you give to a newcomer as I don’t want to embarrass myself or my hosts. What are some rules of the road I should be aware of?
I apologise for just getting around to replying now as I know this mail was in my inbox for a while now. So my apologies for the late reply.
I do indeed go for shoots if I ever have the time and the opportunity. The problem is shooting parties are often planned months in advance and one’s hosts - in most cases that would be my family - need a speedy guests list confirmation because it is hard work and effort to organise a long weekend shooting party. Often I can’t make it because of work and travel comittments but when I can I love it.
Tumblr media
I’ve done most of my shooting to date in glens of Scotland. Indeed this past August I finally managed to go to the Angus glens to join my family clan and family friends for a shooting party to open the ‘Glorious 12th’ (the start of the shooting season in the UK). I was a little rusty as it’s been a while since I shot anything but honour was salvaged by bagging a few birds. The best part was of course having it cooked for the meal afterwards.
So is there a shooting etiquette you should be aware of ahead of time? I think there is but a lot of it is unspoken as it’s just assumed. That’s not very helpful for those who, like you, is your first time with a shooting party. So here are in no order an etiquette check list I would be mindful of. It’s not gospel of course but it’s what I would do. Some of it may sound obvious but it’s always the small obvious things that let you down.
Tumblr media
1. Arrive on time. It is considered very bad form to be late. Do not expect your host to wait for you, so pack everything you need the night before. Being late is not only poor etiquette but shows little respect for all the people who have planned tight schedules for a good shoot. 2. Dress appropriately. Wear layered clothes that allow flexibility of movement and also keeps you warm. There is nothing worse than being freezing cold or wet, and it’s irritating for others if you need to borrow things. 3. Bring plenty of cartridges, you don’t want to run out, plus it’s encouraging to your host that you expect a good bag. 4. Before you set off there will be a shoot briefing, listen carefully as some birds may be off limits. Embarrassing to have to confess to shooting one of those! 5. Respect your host’s and keeper’s rules implicitly. Follow all their instructions to the letter. 6. Safety first. When walking always break your gun and make sure the barrels are pointing earthwards. 7. Only shoot when the whistle goes and you see clear sky behind your bird. Never shoot towards woods or hedges as you might take out a beater. 8. Never shoot a low bird, this really is bad form. If you are a particularly skilled shot be generous to those around you and let a few pass over to less experienced shots. No one likes a complete show off. 9. If lunch is indoors leave your boots in the car and have a pair of shoes to change into. 10. Drink but don’t get drunk. Bring some sloe gin (a red looking liqueur made from the sloe berry) and warm yourself up. But don’t be fooled into taking too much just because it’s cold. A simple rule of thumb is drink the same amount as you would if you were going to drive a car. Save the heavy drinking for the boisterous dinner in the evening.
While not exhaustive, this basic etiquette check list should see you through.
Tumblr media
I would personally add a few more. For example I always help pick up the birds and cartridges. I always accept the brace of birds if that’s offered at the end of the day. I would also bring cash to tip the Head Keeper and your loader if you were given one because they really do help and they are great for a banter and a laugh - ask your host what they recommend. I would also definitely thank everyone before I left.
Perhaps it’s a habit instilled in me since I was a little girl but I’ve always been taught to write out a hand written thank you letter (fountain pen!) as soon as possible. It’s not just a question of courtesy and good manners but should also help with another invitation unless you did something ghastly! Not everyone can reciprocate with an invitation to one’s hosts. Not everyone will have a shoot to do that with, so inviting your host out to dinner or a lunch is perfectly fine. Even though my parents do the inviting on most occasions I go on shooting parties, I still - along with one or two of my siblings - treat them out to a nice restaurant afterwards as a gesture of appreciation.
Tumblr media
Oh I almost forgot, most of all, don’t forget to have fun!
I sincerely hope you do enjoy your first time at a shooting party. Please feel free to drop me a private line as to how it went.
Thanks for your question

Re: make our sun stand still -- honestly at this point, these stories are so far removed from POTO how is it even fanfiction anymore? You should write original fiction. Also, your "historically detailed author's note": "sorelli's own TB is left intentionally vague" -- if you can't put that across as a writer, go back and re-work it. "FFN character limit should be abolished for my summary" -- a summary has to be tight. If you can't do it in like 3 sentences, it isn't a summary, is it?
I had a few initial responses to this, ranging from bleary-eyed comprehension at half six in the morning to intense anxiety, something that resembled a bitter laugh, and a brief flare of anger that was mercifully short.
Also, oddly, relief.
Anon, I’ve been expecting this message for some time. I expected it last week, with my Philippe/Sorelli stories, I expected it with the Tinder ‘verse, and with love-light, and the Delta stories, and Digging Up Bones, and a host of other times that it never came. That it has come now has caused me to step back and wonder, why? I’ve been expecting it for so long that I expected it with Soft Place to Fall almost through second-nature. I did get one very like this, last year, with Running Through the Rain, and it contributed to a night of alcohol poisoning that I have no desire to remember.
Anon, what is the definition of fanfiction? It is fan generated content about a set of characters created by somebody else. Anon, what is the definition of an alternate universe? The taking of those characters and placing them in a world different to their own.
Every act of fic writing creates an AU, no matter how closely the writer adheres to canon, because every act of fic writing creates a story already fundamentally different to canon.
Anon, what is the definition of PotO fanfiction?
A fan-generated piece of content about characters originating in Phantom of the Opera. Last I checked those were the origins of Sorelli. I simply imagined how she might be in a different set of circumstances. Admittedly a very different set of circumstances, but she is Sorelli nonetheless.
The prompt I received, that led to the creation of this fic, called simply for something featuring Christine, Sorelli, time travel, and mutual pining. There was no compunction on me to set the fic in the canon era. I freely admit canon-era France is something I know a very limited amount about. I am a historian, but that setting is not my area of research.
I do write original fiction. I’ve had a story broadcast nationally and it is available online and I have spoken about it here in the past. I’ve had scraps of poetry published. I am working on the third draft of a novel. None of that means that I can’t also write fic. None of that means that I can’t take someone else’s characters and set them in a wildly different world.
I can, and I will, and I have.
If you don’t like it you don’t have to read it. The evidence is that you have read it because you quote from my own author’s note. That particular line, about the source of Sorelli’s own tuberculosis, exists because I know some readers would like a clear-cut answer on it. The body of the fic itself provides no less than three potential sources of infection. Tuberculosis was endemic in the Ireland of the 1920s, and the 1930s, and the 1940s, and before. 60,000 people died of the disease in the approximate period of 1932-1947, a period when the total population barely reached 3 million, and those fatality figures likely are only a partial picture, due the stigma around the disease, the reluctance to put it down as cause of death on a death certificate, and the multiplicity of atypical presentations of it. Even the three sources of infection I provide may not be the one that caused it in this one (fictional) case.
The fic itself has all of the historical details and explanations it needs. The author’s note simply provides some additional context, because I for one like when a historically-based fic does that. I am a historian, a historian of medicine as well as of politics and agriculture, and this is my failing. I can delete the note if you want, but I don’t think it would make you happy.
You also grossly overstate my comment on the FFN summary character limit. The actual comment was “summarising something like this is a bitch and frankly the FFN character limit should be abolished.” It was written in response to circumstance — I wrote the summary for the fic on AO3, attempted to copy and paste it into the box on FFN, and had to cut it down to make it fit. That does not inherently change the content of either the fic or the summary, it purely impacted the flow and readability of the summary. Personally, I prefer when cross-posted fics have the same summary on multiple sites and when it somewhat reflects the tone of the story. It is a simple matter of taste and prevents so much confusion. I frequently find FFN an unwieldy site — and have mentioned this on a number of occasions in the past — and for a fic like this the tagging system on AO3 works so much better than a mere summary and two restrictive genre tags. But again, that is a matter of taste.
And when was the last time you read a novel — or a historical text — summarized in less than three sentences? Three very short sentences at that.
But to return to the matter of fanfiction, and what defines it. PotO is, quite frankly, the most conservative fandom I’ve ever been in, AU-wise. In fact in most regards. Have you ever searched through the multiplicity of AUs available for things like Sherlock or Wynonna Earp or Harry Potter on AO3? In the case of Harry Potter, a huge amount of them don’t even involve magic. There are historical AUs of every shape and form, including westerns, including war stories. They are all as entitled to being called fanfiction as something that strictly adheres to the most obvious senses of the word.
‘make our sun stand still’ would not work at all as a piece of original fiction. That is one extremely obvious fact about it, even setting aside details. The very means of the time travel in the story — to be explored further through Christine’s perspective — are derived from The Time Traveler’s Wife, and I will be citing that. There are a number of other things that I would not have felt comfortable including if it had been an original piece. All of those changes would result in a wildly different story, and frankly I believe something would be lost by implementing those changes, and not merely my own self-indulgent enjoyment of it.
Just because it doesn’t look like your typical piece of PotO fic does not mean it cannot exist as PotO fic. I freely admit my stories are not for everyone. I have not adhered to the most common principles of PotO fic in more than two years. Possibly I’ve only adhered to it a handful of times in the last four years. I have posted 197 PotO fics (a total of 641,241 words, 77.4% of my entire fic output), and that is not fully reflective of the 48 one-shots contained in the Fragmentations collection, or the host of one-shots and snippets posted here that never made it to fic sites. If we were limited to the most doctrinaire conception of PotO fic, a good 90% of my fics would not exist. Possibly only 10 would exist, possibly only 5. Possibly none and would that make you happy? And if so, perhaps you ought to wonder why.
But it’s not just me. Should every fic writer adhere to the most doctrinaire conception of it, all originality in fic would be lost. Fic is an incredibly innovative and fertile literary field. It feeds into itself in a self-sustaining loop. The fic read for one fandom influences the fic written and enjoyed in another fandom. The backgrounds of the fic writers themselves inform the fics they write — not just setting and speech and sexuality, but a variety of other things too. If I were not a historian, most of my fics would not exist. If I were not a farmer, they would not exist either. If I were not Irish, there are at least 70,000 words of fic that would not exist. If I were not a queer woman, I likely would never have started writing fic at all.
We cannot wholly divorce a fic from the person writing it, and nor should we, just as we cannot wholly divorce it from its canon. And no matter how full a fic is of original elements, it remains a fic, because some if not all of the characters will have been sourced from somebody else’s work. They may have a different accent and a different background and a different skin colour and a different taste in romantic and sexual partners, but there will always be that seed of them that came from canon. So if it’s called fic and it’s posted to a fic site, chances are it works better as fic than as an original work.
So perhaps, Anon, you ought to take a step back, and reflect a little, and look around you, before you wander into my inbox. Chances are I’ve already asked myself the questions you’re posing, and formed a conclusion, and with the information I have access to about myself and my work those conclusions are not going to change just because you couldn’t allow yourself to think outside the box.
