When I picked my LI for HSR, I chose Cain because I think he was quite incheresting but now their dynamic is holding me in a chokehold, they're broken girl x her twisted guardian angel <333

What I love about them is that they're the proper slow burn. Their relationship has started as a grudging alliance because Lane realized she couldn't trust the squad. And she's torn apart by the longing to have someone to trust to and the fear of the feelings she begins to have for Cain because she doesn't want to get hurt. And this logically with Lane's background as a child of most likely tiger parents who instilled in her the "recognition by others = your worth" sentiment. THAT'S HOW YOU WRITE YOUR MC IN A BRANCH!!

The library conversation is very read-between-the-lines, and I think it heavily implies that Cain knows something about Lane's nature and waits for her to realize it herself. And this echoes back to 1x05: "You have nothing to fear / "Cain sees in you something you don't".

But even besides that this conversation was the kinkiest shit. Lane admitting that she doesn't care how Cain treats other, she wants him to be kind with her, Cain slowly caressing her cut and asking her to teach him how to be kind (and the poesy of part of Lane's humanity missing & her feelings a bit more alive in his presence), Lane being torn apart by her feelings for Cain?!?? FINALLY, SOME FUCKING DELICIOUS FOOD

Cain and Lane have been dancing around each other in circles, pushing and pulling. And this mental tango is the sexiest part of their route.

To me, that's cinema.

i just love how they naturally clicked from the very beginning like lane instantly gravitated towards cain because of his allure and ambiguity as a divine creature while cain also gravitated towards lane out of similar curiosity about her nature (and god knows what else considering their mysterious past acquaintance with one another) and it's been nothing but this super intense push and pull ever since

it truly kills me how there's this almost transcendent quality to their connection because of that mutual curiosity but there's also something so tender and human to it at the same time like the way lane lowkey frets over his absence and the thought of losing him or the way cain smiles at her and grasps at every opportunity to touch her

Anyway, I really love Askr and wanted to see what ships of his you liked! So far, I’ve seen the following ships involving him (Læraðr is the most recent one and mostly on Ao3/FEH subreddit)

I like Askr x Summoner, because the dynamic can be really incheresting, also the thought of how Alfonse is coping with this makes me laugh. But I also really like Askr x Embla, but in like a they were together in past however are now divorced and everyone can tell kind of way.

I see the appeal in the last two ships except I don't really have strong opinions on Læraðr or Freyr.

But tbh I'm actually really terrible at coming up with ships between characters unless they are spoon fed to me, I have media literacy I swear. But for you anon I raise you Askr x Mila. Without any elaboration except I wanna be sandwiched between them.

wade/logan/eddie/venom/vanessa/rogue/peter

like because ok, logan kills people without remorse and his only real method of self defence is naturally fatal(his claws), wade is a mercenary who doesnt regret or feel bad about it in the slightest, eddie lets his symbiote eat people's heads and only feels minor guilt, and peter has a REALLY STRONG MORAL CODE so this is all just begging for huge disagreements, which is juicy

but also venom wants to be a hero, wade wants to live up to peter's expectations, and logan doesnt actually ENJOY being a killer he just often has no other options. so there's room for change without losing the core of who any of these people are

but at the same time, if he just comes in and unilaterally says "you have to follow my rules" they'd all chafe against the presumption!

but they do want him around!

but he does accept that other heros will kill people!

but he also thinks its possible to go too far, and be too callous about it, and he doesnt want it near him/in his city!

its a big conflict and its interesting and it would lead to a dynamic change within the polycule and peter would have to confront his own morals and what he'd be willing to accept and whether or not it makes him a bad person to be with these people, people who are obviously trying and do care about others and do try to do the right thing but do it in a way he often cant condone, and THEN there's the reputafion of SPIDER-MAN already besmirtched by jameson's accusations, what would it to for him to be associated with KILLERS when he needs to be your FRIENDLY neighborhood spider-man who you can trust?

So so so! I finished reading the available books of Starlight Brides, and...

It's Alien Tritons Bride, by Lynnea Lee.

Story: 6/10, pretty generic, textbook romance story.

World building: 9/10. We have sea critters, an interesting new planet to explore, a cool underwater city with a well developed culture.

Characters: 8/10, they have lives, jobs, friends and passions outside of eachother.

Spice: 2/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. Could do without, tbh, but incheresting anatomy is always welcome.

It's a Triton.

They found a way to make surface dwelling species be able to live underwater.

Incheresting anatomy... 👀

Cool underwater cities!

But

Interesting social dynamics!

He's not a standard hot guy with fangs!

They're having a lack of females, and so they're paying top money for mail order brides. The females on that species are only interested in the money they can get off a "breeding contract" or whatever they call it (been a week and I've read other stuff since)

Once again, it's not on my top 10, not even my top 20. Could be better written, especially the spice, but it's not bad either

Overall, 7/10? Above average, for sure, but doesn't exactly stands out to me.

Next one comes out this month, and it's by Ursa Dax, so let's see how it goes!

it might be because i've been reading every single Araki interview i can find (and feeling so insulted on his behalf that people still think he's a slapdash idiot) + working on a new story so my brain's going a mile a minute but I JUST THINK it's incheresting that even aside from it being the moment in which The World awakens (possibly hinted in the OVA, intentionally hinted in DPP) and aside from star platinum ROARING after its attack to portray/release jotaro's tension, and aside from it being a crucial enough turning point that 2 lush OVA episodes were dedicated to it, oh and aside from it being jotaro's special fight in jojo's venture/heritage for the future,

it's also that jotaro beat all the prior (and future) enemies to shit til they were dead/retired without any care and then... and then... the very first guy whose life he wants to spare, the first since taking on his homies polnareff and kakyoin... well, he's not allowed, that choice is taken away from him by the guy committing suicide right in front of him. HUH???

i wonder if there was a prompt, like "create an enemy Jotaro would actually respect." there are so many little humanising details, including us hearing n'doul's running commentary/internal thoughts due to him being alone.

why would i waste time thinking about something as nothingburger as jotaro/kakyoin, something for which you have to mash your brain into a donut shape because they have no chemistry (compared to the well-established and very sweet ongoing friendship with polnareff) plus kakyoin being MIA— i don't know why should i bother being distracted by that when the thing i'm being shown, with purpose and intent, is SO compelling that my brain goes tesseract mode. i feel like i'm taking CRAZY PILLS

though that's how i feel about most jjba ships/how they're done. actually, most ships from anything. usually the stuff i like is so good (LMAO?) that i find maximum satisfaction exploring it along the axis of what it's dishing out... i want the narrative to double down, i want to accept that this is what an author has decided is important and if they think that then what does that mean? and forget that i'm delusional for a second OK

another example is phoenix/edgeworth in ace attorney. jesus christ. it feels like someone told a big lie in like 2006 and it spiralled into a game of telephone and everyone was like "oh, ok!" but replaying it since then, i find there are So Many fascinating relationships/dynamics to explore, things that are so much more captivating to me than that ship. both edgeworth and phoenix are rude as fuck, one a highfalutin uncontrollably transparent bitch and the other an intense and abrasive dirtbag leftist, both very petty, and them being friends, and them being friends with larry, is gold to me. because ok, if that's true, and it is, and it's funny and fraught and complex, then THAT'S what i want to daydream about.

i really don't think it's lack of creativity on my part, i think i just get inspired by different elements of a story. i did a big search trying to find "films similar to HEAT (1995)" but every recommendation is just... crime. it's not examined much further than that. i haven't found anything that comes at it from the angle of how emotions/atmosphere are structured, guided, even purposefully distracted in HEAT, the anxiety and guilt and sorrow and relief you're made to feel. if Michael Mann is known for his meticulousness, then meticulousness of emotion, of breathlessness, and how that's crafted, should also be a point of study and comparison! i don't need it to be identical in genre— HEAT could've been a great heist film in terms of cleverness, but it's the tone and connection formed which elevates it.

i'm so much more interested in the symbolic turning point of the n'doul fight because of exactly what it is, it's a literal sudden gut punch causing a jarring reflection and sense of humanity that was easy to bypass before. that's amazing to me. if someone had only watched the garish DPP version and hadn't read the manga or seen the OVA then i could maybe understand since there isn't much in terms of colour or set dressing to carry what's going on, but, like i said, that Is the one with The World, it Is the one where we get a glimpse of N'doul with DIO... idk. i'm an insane person and i've been thinking about it off and on for almost 10 years and that's probably medically abnormal but unfortunately i can convince myself of anything and i never disappoint myself

TNG UPDATE!!! triumphantly finished "the schizoid man" and "unnatural selection" just in time

the schizoid man: 0 STARS!!! you'd think i'd be really into it considering data gets possessed, but the villain of this movie was so fucking offputting (the sexism, being mean to data, not offputting in a fun way) that he didn't strike a chord with me. that plus evryone just assuming data was being his usual weird self...not to become one of those people that are rabid about a single character but they do data sooo dirty on this show sometimes!!

what i would have liked was for data to like. fight the possession somehow? express some kind of unhappiness about having been possessed and his off button being found by a malicious party? idk maybe someone asks him data do you hate humans now and he's like of course not! but continues to look troubled. you had a perfectly concept that you totally wasted, lol

i do like that picard FINALLY came to bat for data near the end here. picard doesn't do nearly enough defending data considering the amount of bullshit data gets about being an android!! it was nice to finally see someone having his fucking back

the "love triangle" in this episode WAS deeply bad and unnecessary and i hated it so much, but the "i'll put you in an android body baby and we can be together forever" being met with abject horror was...something. it felt like a cross between requiem for methuselah and what are little girls made of...except in the latter episode, they made you doubt whether such a thing was possible, and in THIS episode they all but confirmed that it was. which is incheresting

like as an aside, i have mind palace ideas (that may never come to fruition) re: the concept of putting a consciousness in an android body and kirk/spock's differentiating lifespans...that in the right scenario one or both of them might be tempted by the promise of not having to be separated, horrible though. ultimately though i needed to know more about how androids worked in tng because i had limited and outdated canon to work with...at least this episode could be good for SOMETHING

unnatural selection: this was a really good one actually! i was very surprised. this was the first time i actually liked dr pulaski, even though she was mean to data a few times. her meanness to data here felt MUCH more like the good-natured verbal sparring bones does with spock, especially because data is such a spocklike character, though it still misses the mark by a good deal because data either can't or won't fire back. so it still feels like a bad power dynamic and bad sitch, but her delivery and his "yeah whatever" faces were much better

i also really like her pigheadedness and willing to put herself in harm's way to save lives...GO girl have a personality! give us something! and she did! she reminded me a lot of bones in this episode (honorofic) and i really enjoyed it. if she was like this all the time it would be really good, and i'm actually kind of bummed now that she's gonna go away and beverly is coming back....

speaking of beverly is there a REASON we have to do this romance thing with picard and whoever the doctor happens to be? the one truly sour note in this episode was that they were suddenly like oh yes she admires picard SOOO much that's why she left ALL her friends and coworkers on that other ship JUST so she could serve with him...that's a bullshit backstory. it's sexist, it's two-dimensional, and he does not need a love interest, SHE does not need a fucking love interest. i actually enjoyed their arguing - him asking for the mercy to be allowed to finish his sentences lol - but making it a bickership thing really took the fun out of it and the wind out of my sails.

NEXT UP TONIGHT: "a matter of honor" and "the measure of a man."

Oooo that one is interesting tbh i don't have a lot of hc's for brick but dagger absolutely hates Royce, so i could potentially see him trying to make a deal with brick to reclaim maelstrom and putting himself on the top of the ladder right next to him in return. brick seems much more rational and level-headed than the other maelstrom members, so he probably wouldn't put up with dagger's shit and could help him focus all his manic energy into something worthwhile, and if it got the right results dagger would definitely start to grow respect for him, but i still think they'd clash quite a bit. i don't see brick budging much at all for him, and dagger could just as easily begin to resent him for that.
