Meredith Ann Pierce’s Firebringer trilogy deserves to be counted as a fantasy and xenofiction classic. Consisting of “Birth of the Firebringer”, “Dark Moon”, and “The Son of Summer Stars”; the story is about a tribe of warrior unicorns seeking to reclaim their homeland from the wyverns who drove them out.

One thing I really like about the trilogy is that it avoids the black and white morality that, while being far from universal, has been an issue in the fantasy genre since at least Tolkien’s days. A lot of the first book in particular deals with the protagonist, Jan, learning that the xenophobic beliefs he was raised with are incorrect. Even the wyverns are shown to have both good and bad individuals, instead of being a generic evil fantasy antagonist species.

Without spoiling too much; the second book’s plot involves Jan protecting a mare from being assaulted by a stallion, and then helping bring down a patriarchal religion that exploits both animals and people.

The trilogy also contains one of my favorite fictional characters of all time: a unicorn witch/healer named Jah-lila.

For life-changing short stories: I highly recommend “On the Banks of the River Lex”, by the legendary N. K. Jemisin.

If I’m also allowed to recommend comics, Ursula Vernon’s Hugo Award winning “Digger” is a must-read. If you think that a comic starring a talking wombat can’t be one of the most beautiful and haunting stories you’ll ever read, think again.
