NEW PHASE FOR CENTRE FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD RESEARCH ON ADBB!

The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood and the Institute of Health Visiting (iHV) confirmed the expansion of the trial of a tool used by health visitors within routine checks to promote infant wellbeing, to eight new sites this year on Friday 24th January 2025.

The tool, known internationally as the Alarm Distress Baby Scale (ADBB), focuses on a baby’s social behaviours such as eye contact, facial expression, vocalisation, and activity levels to help practitioners and families better understand the ways babies express their feelings. Providing support at this critical time, when babies’ brains are developing faster than at any other time in their lives, can have a life-long impact.

Christian Guy, Executive Director of The Centre for Early Childhood, said:

“We know that warm, loving, responsive interactions with those closest to them during the earliest weeks and months of a baby’s life are crucial in promoting positive brain development.

Health visitors do such a vital job in our communities. I am delighted that we are now able to give more teams across the UK the support they need to help thousands of families to better understand their babies and build nurturing relationships, laying the strongest possible foundations for all that is to come in the years that follow."

The Princess of Wales saw health visitors in Denmark using the tool on a visit there in 2022 and The Centre for Early Childhood then worked with the iHV and Oxford University to test it in the UK.

Phase one explored the feasibility of implementing a modified version of the tool (m-ADBB) within health visitors’ routine 6-8-week checks with families and had overwhelmingly positive results.

Health visitors involved in phase one reported that the new training and tool, which required minimal additional time and could be embedded into routine activities with families, enabled them: To have more meaningful conversations with parents and carers about the emotional wellbeing of their baby;

To promote positive parent-infant interactions, attachment, and bonding; and

To identify those babies and families in need of greater support during this critical period of development.

The second phase, funded by a £210,000 grant from the Centre for Early Childhood, will build upon the findings of the first and will focus on the impact of the tool, and how it is experienced by parents. The evaluation will also look at whether more babies receive the additional support they need as a result of the tool helping health visitors to identify concerns as early as possible.

During phase two, iHV will be working with local sites – and others outside the trial – to consider how to embed, grow and sustain use of the tool after the pilot, if it is shown to be effective.

Digital innovations can elevate citizen science as an internationally recognized source of data used by policymakers and as a career opportunity for young people

The Enviro-Champs are a group of over a thousand people using citizen science to draw attention to water quality issues in South Africa.

“We work with the Enviro-Champs to support us on the ground to collect data on rivers”, said Futhi Vilakazi of uMngeni-uThukela Water.

Research by scientists at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and GroundTruth have shown that simple visual tools such as charts to identify and count lifeforms in rivers, or acrylic tubes to identify the clarity of water, can provide comparable results to laboratory tests.

Groups like the Enviro-Champs and other citizen scientists have readily adopted these tools, demonstrating the unique contribution that can come from co-engaged local communities. Citizen scientists can collect more data over longer periods, across large regions or with greater intensity. In one study*, volunteers monitored how water pollution from wastewater treatment works varied every day between 2012 and 2019. Less than two years after the treatment plant was made aware of this monitoring, their compliance with regulations shot up from zero to 60-70%.

Nonetheless, citizen science comes with its own challenges. The process remains highly manual and often paper-based, relying on the selfless dedication of volunteers to improve local issues. Although the community aspect can be a powerful motivator to local authorities, the data they collect are often seen as being too unreliable to use for management.

Through the CGIAR Initiative on Digital Innovation, IWMI, Groundtruth and key local partners are collaborating to develop technological upgrades that can transform the impact of citizen science.

This includes a smartphone app to digitize, geolocate and upload citizen science river health surveys, using the mini stream assessment scoring system (miniSASS), to an online platform. There have been >350 river health surveys submitted by citizen scientists in 2024. An image recognition AI function was created to recognize lifeforms in the river that indicate water quality, helping verify the data in real time.

A Bulgarian woman boxer’s defeat at the Olympics has inflamed ongoing disputes about gender identity issues, triggering discriminatory rhetoric from politicians and media misinformation.

Controversy over an old source of discord has erupted again in Bulgaria after Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan defeated Bulgarian woman boxer Svetlana Kamenova Staneva at the Olympics featherweight quarter-final in Paris at the weekend.

Media commentators and politicians have spread ill-informed stereotypes and encouraged discriminatory rhetoric, according to media experts.

There had already been controversy internationally over the inclusion in the Paris Olympics of Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif of Algeria, who had previously been disqualified by another sporting body, the International Boxing Association, from 2023’s boxing World Championships for failing gender eligibility tests. 

The International Olympic Committee, however, questioned the reliability of these tests.

During Sunday’s bout, Kamenova raised the gender question openly by forming the letter “X” with her hands, symbolising female XX chromosomes, while her coach, Borislav Georgiev, held up a banner with the slogan: “Save Woman Sports” (sic). He later claimed that the Bulgarian fighter “was robbed” and referred disparagingly to Lin Yu-ting as “a creature”.

After the fight, Bulgarian President President Rumen Radev joined the fray, saying that Kamenova Staneva “found bravery in fighting not only for victory in what people considered a lost game but also standing up for normalcy”. 

The Bulgarian Olympic Committee criticised the decision to allow Yu-ting and Khelif to participate at the tournament. 

News media and major TV channels – including some credible outlets – also piled in, referring to Yu-ting and Khelif as “transsexuals” and as “intersex” persons, even though they were born female. The controversy even briefly overshadowed Bulgaria’s long-running governance crisis and the difficulties in combatting wildfires across the country.

Many local media outlets cited a statement supportive of Kamenova issued by a Bulgarian organisation reportedly calling itself the Network for Protecting Women’s Rights. 

However, no source for the statement could be traced and the organisation has no online presence. 

The coverage of the dispute prompted the Association for European Journalists – Bulgaria to accuse the country’s media of “negligent” behaviour.

“Under-researched and stereotypical coverage of such topics not only fuels homophobia and misogyny; it may serve external interests to destabilise democracy but could also have a severe impact on the mental state of various groups and individuals. Unfortunately, even respectable outlets were repeatedly negligent in covering the matter,” it said in a statement.

‘Complete disregard for the facts’

The bout in Paris has only highlighted deeper problems with gender issues in Bulgaria, journalist Peter Georgiev of sports podcast Victoria told BIRN.

“For years, Bulgarian society has been extremely sensitive to sex and gender issues, but opinions are often ill-informed. In the case of Khelif and Yu-ting, a number of coaches, politicians and even professional sports commentators reacted emotionally to Kamenova’s loss, showing little understanding of terms such as transgender and intersex,” Georgiev told BIRN. 

“Their complete disregard for the facts and public outrage amplified misinformation and fuelled a wave of unjustified hatred,” he added.

Georgiev sees the case as representative of a wider failure by the media and society to properly tackle gender issues: “This is especially disappointing because it shifts the attention away from the very real debate about fairness in sports,” he said.

He noted that the dispute between the International Olympic Committee and the International Boxing Association also caused problems for the boxers themselves.

“The fight between the IOC and international bodies governing boxing illustrates how much athletes suffer, physically and mentally, when there’s no consensus on the eligibility criteria,” Georgiev said.

The IBA’s president, Umar Kremlev, a Russian sports businessman and well-known ally of Vladimir Putin, has repeatedly asserted that the association’s test revealed that the boxers had XY chromosomes, giving them a testosterone advantage over other women fighters. The IOC has contested this, saying the testing was “so flawed that it’s impossible to engage with it”.

Politicians play on gender anxieties

In Bulgaria, the issue of gender has often been used and misused for political purposes. 

Since 2017, the so-called Istanbul Convention, a Council of Europe convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, has often been interpreted, especially by conservative and anti-Western voices, as promoting LGBTQ+ rights and as focusing on a definition of gender as a social construct rather than a biologically determined factor. 

This has been a main talking point for two of Bulgaria’s pro-Russian parties, the far-right Revival and the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, which in 2023 called for a “referendum on gender ideology”. 

Arguments that liberal reforms might undermine Bulgaria’s “traditional values” and promote the rights of sexual or gender minorities were used against the passage of amendments to the Law on Domestic Violence.

In the last few years, controversial court rulings have limited the rights of transgender people in Bulgaria.

Politicians are using the latest boxing controversy as fuel for their populist rhetoric. Centre-right GERB party member and former Sports Minister Krassen Kralev wrote on his personal social media accounts, before the match started, that it was “the most shameful page in the history of the IOC”.

After the match, Kralev criticised the “pink-liberal sect in Bulgaria” for defending the Taiwanese contestant and congratulated Kamenova Staneva for standing against “that thing from Taipei” and calling the match “fixed”. 

There has been no indication that Kralev might face legal action for hate speech. Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee has not challenged the outcome of Sunday’s match.

Statement from the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada on Respiratory Illness Season - Published Dec 14, 2024

Respiratory illness season is well underway in Canada. While respiratory infections can occur year-round, it is common to see a significant increase in the fall and winter months. For some areas where the health care system is currently at capacity, these elevated or increasing levels of respiratory illness are already posing significant challenges to hospitals. As a result, it is especially important that we all take steps to protect ourselves and our families at this time of year, including during the holiday season.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) continues to assess the levels of respiratory viruses across Canada and provides weekly national updates. While there is variability across the country, multiple viruses, including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 are circulating at the same time. On November 25, 2023, PHAC indicated that flu season in Canada had officially begun. As of the week ending December 2, 2023, RSV and flu activity continued to increase in Canada but remained within expected levels for this time of year.

For COVID-19, at a national level, the percent of laboratory tests coming back positive remains relatively high. Additionally, some provinces and territories are seeing increases in COVID-19 activity, including to high and very high levels in parts of the country. However, trends in a number of indicators, including wastewater surveillance, vary by region. It is important for people in Canada to consult their local public health authorities for the most up to date information on respiratory virus activity in their region.

As the holidays approach, we can expect further spread of viruses as we travel and socialize more. I encourage everyone to take action to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy. If you haven't already done so, now is a good time to get your updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Both vaccines can be given at the same time. Health Canada has now authorized three XBB.1.5 COVID-19 vaccines, which better target new sub-variants of the virus. We can expect new COVID-19 variants to continue to emerge, like the currently circulating BA.2.86 variant which is growing in Canada and internationally. While we are continuing to learn more about this variant, and the JN.1 sub-lineage, early evidence suggests that the updated XBB.1.5 vaccines provide protection against these latest circulating strains.

Vaccination is particularly important for those at increased risk of severe illness due to COVID-19 or influenza, such as adults 65 years of age and over. As of December 3, 2023, approximately 41.3% of adults in Canada 65 years of age and older have received the updated COVID-19 vaccine (XBB.1.5). Others at increased risk include individuals who are pregnant, Indigenous populations, those with underlying medical conditions, and for influenza only, children 6 months to under the age of 5 years.

In addition to vaccination, the use of personal protective measures can help reduce your risk of getting or spreading respiratory infectious diseases. These measures include properly wearing a high quality, well-fitting respirator or mask in indoor public places, regular hand hygiene and improving indoor ventilation. It is also important to stay home if you do get sick to avoid spreading infections. Just like layering up to protect ourselves against the Canadian winter, using multiple layers of protection is the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection during respiratory illness season.

Taking steps to prevent illness not only helps to keep you and your loved ones healthy, but can reduce hospitalizations due to respiratory illness, which decreases pressure on our health care system.

Nthabiseng Faith's Journey of Being A Model And The Creative Director of Kwa Jewelry

Nthabiseng Faith is a 23-year-old born and raised in Gaborone, She is the creative director of Kwa Jewelry, A jewellery brand founded by artist and arts educator LegakwanaLeo Makgekgenene.

She is also a model signed to Kult Models. Nthabiseng has worked with Glotto and LWE over the last three years, curates her own photoshoots, and collaborates with other creatives. In this conversation, she discusses how she got into the model industry, her work for Kwa Jewelry and much more.

How did you start your modelling career, what sparked your interest in the field?  

I actually was never interested in pursuing modelling until later on in life. I've always loved fashion for as long as I can remember, however growing up I had other outlets of expressing myself such as photography, thrift upcycles and writing. I started when a mutual friend (Thuto from Path Images) kindly reached out for a test shoot cause he believed I had "the look". The shoot was surprisingly comfortable and spontaneous for me which I absolutely adored, topped with the very lovely end results. So I decided to research the industry intensively and give it a try with more intention and direction.

Was it easy for you to get comfortable with being in front of the camera or just being around a couple of people during photoshoots when you started modelling?

Yes it was, I never struggled to switch on what I refer to as my alter ego. When shooting the outer world all becomes a blur to me, my periphery focuses solely on the lens plus allowing my body and expressions to flow as one with the camera.

Which photoshoot/campaign that you have done, is your favourite?

I don't quite believe in favorites. I am very peculiar with what I shoot and with who, so everything I have done I value.

You are Kwa Jewelry’s creative director, how did that come about and what do you like most about the brand? 

I have previously worked closely with the founder as their personal art assistant, so when they decided to relaunch the jewelry brand I was fortunate enough to be on their mind. Even though I had not done something like this before, they believed in my artistic mind and work ethic which I am very grateful for. Which brings me to your next point, honestly everything the brand embodies is very likeable.

Since joining the Kwa Jewelry brand, how are you adjusting to the role and what have you learned from the experience?

Honestly, the adjustment was seamless. If anything, it just amplified parts of me I kept suppressed over the years. So it has been such a reaffirming journey. I can be harshly critical of my work so the biggest takeaway for me right now would be learning to trust myself despite not knowing how people will receive or interact with the content.

How would you explain the experience of being a model in Botswana, and how are you dealing with it? 

All cards on the table? It has been such a horrible experience for me locally. Again, as previously mentioned I am very particular. So I think that can easily be interpreted as being "difficult" which has resulted in such a disconnect and void. I am at a point where I no longer overanalyze or beat myself about it though. Still very grateful for all experiences, everything is a learning curve.

Are you a freelance model or are you under management, between the two which is more is easy to work under?

Since I started in 2018, for most of my career I have been a freelance model. However, early this year I got signed internationally with Kult Models in Cape Town. As for which is easier to work under, each has its pros and cons. Also it would depend on your experience and the kind of modeling one does among other thing.

You've modelled for LWE since 2021, how did that come about and did you expect this 'partnership' with Troy Gabolwelwe to continue till now?

Troy reached out to me , which I was very open to without hesitation as I could see his passion and determination. Over the years I have watched him grow and hone his skills as a designer, each collection building towards a very distinctive style which absolutely makes me happy and proud of him. I think we are able to work so well together for so long as we have since built a friendship and connection where we are able to share our dreams and hold each other accountable.

Kwa Jewelry has branded itself as an Afrocentric brand, why did you choose to do so?

(I was not the one that decided on going with Afrocentric elements, I was fortunate enough to work with a team that allows me full creative expression, so my process does get inspired to create and lean more towards Africanity inevitably)

How do you balance staying true to your creative vision while also adapting to industry trends

By not adapting to trends. As cliche as it sounds, literally just doing me on a daily. Each day simply aiming to enlighten my creative self through experimentation and execution.

Where do you see Botswana’s fashion industry in the future and what role do you want to play in its development?  

Honestly hard to say but I hope we grow to be open-minded and respectful of all the different roles and of one another within the industry.

 What is the biggest you’ve had moment in your career? 

My biggest moments are yet to come.

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in Botswana’s creative industry? 

Myself.

 What message do you have for young aspiring creatives?  

Do not shy away from being different. With it may come being or feeling alone. Find comfort and affirmation in knowing that despite all of that, there is a tribe for you somewhere out there and someday you’ll know when you have found it. People who will not only resonate with your highest growing self but make you feel seen, heard and understood.

What’s next for you Nthabiseng?

I just know it's bigger and better. Constantly working towards ensuring this.

San Sebastian pre-arrival thoughts!

Week 0

Hello everyone!

I really can't believe that in just a few short hours I'll be boarding my plane and traveling for the first time internationally. It's safe to say that I'm definitely more excited than nervous, and I like the thrill of having to figure things out on my own. Before I get into it, I'll start off with a little introduction. My name is Emily Dobao and I'm a sophomore studying Biomedical Engineering and Spanish. One of my favorite hobbies is art; I've loved creating and crafting things ever since I was small. When it comes to what I do with art, you can pretty much name anything under the sun and I've given it a try. Sculpting, quilting, and sketching are my top choices though! During the school year, I spend a lot of time with the taekwondo club where I both try and fail to not get kicked in the head. We travel a decent amount for tournaments, but 8 hours in a car is definitely different than 8 hours on a plane (waaay less potholes in the air). I like to stay active so going on hot girl walks and longboarding are my go-tos, and when in Spain I'm super excited to explore the city's footpaths and its hiking trails. While I'm there, I have some goals in mind that I want to stay on top of over the course of the 10 weeks:

I’ve heard so many great things about Spain, and since I’m minoring in Spanish, I’m hoping that I can improve my fluency. I consider it a double win being able to go abroad for research in my major as well as a country that speaks the language I’m also studying. I think it would be really interesting to learn the differences in dialect, pick up local slang, and in general feel more connected to the culture through the Spanish-language.

What I’m really looking forward to when I first get there is trying the food. I’m a die-hard foodie and absolutely looove trying new things, so I’ve already been making a list of what I want to taste test! Being immersed in the local culture and learning of their traditions is super intriguing to me as well, and by the end of my time in Spain I want to have found friends that I’ll form lifetime connections with.

Lastly, and most importantly, I’ll have the opportunity of doing biomedical-related research with a professor leading in the university’s Tissue Engineering Group! This opportunity is perfect since I’ve been trying to decide on a track that I want to focus on for my major, so by having that hands-on experience with tissue engineering, I could see if it’s something that I would like doing in the future (I’m already very interested in it and can’t wait to see what project I’ll be working on!!).

Personal Save File Lore: Judith Ward's first ever acting gig was impersonating Princess Diana. Hailing from the small and remote village of Henford-on-Bagley, Judith-like many others-was touched by the princess's far-reaching presence and influence. Though she never got the chance to meet her in real life, Judith was still smitten, and eventually her admiration grew obsessive. Through magazines and the lone village TV at the local pub, Judith studied the princess's style and mannerisms and adopted them as her own. I wanted to write a recap of things I’ve done in 2023, basically in order. Way too much has happened this year, good and bad. The recap is under the cut:

- Traveled internationally with a class; it was my first big trip without my family

- Went to a bar for the first time (legally while traveling lol)

- Trained to become a writing tutor

- Celebrated Valentines Day with a partner for the first time

- Turned 21

- Got the flu right after I turned 21, and it was the sickest I’ve ever been

- Had sex for the first time (better late than never)

- Found my biggest special interest, Heartstopper

- Got paid to write a 20 page history research paper and present it

- Felt super depressed while writing the paper cause I was lonely and the topic was boring

- Lived completely on my own for the first time and learned to cook for myself (not very well)

- Had way too many doctor’s appointments and tests

- Got diagnosed with PCOS and started new meds

- My relationship became long distance (but that’ll change soon!)

- Started my job as a TA and writing tutor

- Survived sorority rush week (“survived” isn’t much of an exaggeration; if you know you know)

- Publicly expressed my support for Palestine and did some local activism

- Got harassed by multiple family members for being pro-Palestine and fought with my parents over it

- Lost a 2 year long friendship

- Questioned (and still questioning) my sexuality, gender identity, sex, relationship orientation, and religion

April 22nd, 2055 - Henad 2 Post-Mission Cumulative Report (SOME INFO NOT FOR PUBLIC RELEASE)

The GSRG's first ever crewed suborbital flight, Henad 2, took place earlier this evening, launching at 08:02:51 Putiyana local time and splashing down only 18 minutes and 49 seconds later. The astronaut piloting the vessel, Grisgia Striseo, enjoyed a comfortable flight onboard the newly developed Salt 3 rocket.

The Salt 3 rocket, designed by our partner laboratories, is the first step in our plan to develop an internationally linked space effort. As of now, the reach of the GSRG is small, but negotiations with multiple governments for cooperation on future missions have already begun.

Henad 2 followed the Henad 1's unmanned test flight as the first crewed flight of the GSRG to escape Ulina's atmosphere. Grisgia Yaoi Striseo was the lucky astronaut who took the first step into space for our organization. Striseo has flown over 2,000 hours in the Royal Vau'senaan Air Force and is one of the first 3 astronauts we have recruited into our crewed programs. They are a 39-year-old non-binary Caticani native, who excelled over our 2 other astronauts in training to be chosen as this mission's pilot.

Launch day in Pulunadu was clear with few clouds, relieving worries from the day prior of storms. As the Salt 3 rocket blasted through the atmosphere, flight controllers at our facilities on the ground prepared for the next portion of staging.

Stage 1 separation separates the Service and Command modules from the Salt 3 launch vehicle after it has depleted all of its fuel, halfway through its journey out of the atmosphere. For this mission, the Service module only held small fuel cells and oxygen/ RCS fuel reserves, however in an orbital flight would perform the final burn to establish an orbit. So, the module was detached shortly after reaching its highest altitude, and the command module began using its own life support system reserves.

Following this, the command module's atmospheric reentry began, its flat end reinforced with heat-resistant materials to take the brunt of the extreme heat forces. Then, once it had reached a suitable point in altitude, the drogue parachutes deployed, quickly slowing the capsule down before main parachute deployment.

Due to pre-flight calculation errors the craft performed an unplanned water landing, when originally meant to land in Rilhan. However, recovery was unencumbered. Striseo left the capsule in good spirits and in nominal condition.

Grisgia Striseo was all smiles for the cameras that awaited their safe recovery aboard the large trawler that acts as the GSRG's apparent recovery boat. Seeming chipper as ever, a quick interview with (a suspiciously-soaked) Striseo in the aftermath of their feat revealed that they are "Interested, but not certain" on the possibilities of returning as pilot on future GSRG missions. Head of Operations at GSRG, Maksyi Kozymazhets, expressed jovial congratulations to Striseo and extensive optimism for the organization's future. "Everyone on our team is so proud of what we have accomplished here today, and even more so for Grisgia's resolve and stability throughout the challenging mission we have just completed. This, surely, is the sign that more success is inevitable, and that amazing feats are due for our subsequent programs! An unofficial statement from a recovery team member about the water landing:

'It was from my point of view that I saw the command module, as soon as it touched down in the Strait of Celany, tipping over on its side. Which is, if you can't tell, really not supposed to happen. This meant water pretty much filled the capsule instantly as it opened up so Striseo could get out. The capsule was unrecoverable. I'd say it probably needs a redesign.'
