I bought the pro version of Medibang so you don't have to - a brief review of my experience so far

What is it

Medibang Pro (not to be confused with the free medibang paint pro on pc by the same developers) is the new paid version of the medibang app available in the ipad apple store. Design wise it's extremely similar to the app Procreate, however I chose this over Procreate due to me already being used to medibang from years of using it and it's predecessor Firealpaca as my main image editing tool.

Pros

The brushes are really good. A lot of them are similar to ones found in the apps Sketchbook and Tayasui Sketches, two apps that sell themselves on their realistic brushes. The only difference I can find is that Tayasui has more realistic watercolor brushes, but I couldn't find another app near it in terms of watercolor in my research, not even procreate can compare without multiple steps.

The interface is very simple and easy to understand on first use without any guides, I only had to reach for their online guide for two things that I can recall. The online guide is also very clear with one small miff I have which I will put in the cons.

All or most guides for other versions of Medibang's various tools and brushes still apply to this software which makes it easier to use despite it being a new version of the software.

Cons

Unlike the other versions of Medibang, Medibang Pro's official guide has no images, making it slightly more difficult for new users/visual learners to use it. The samey name to another version of Medibang also makes it more difficult to find information on the program. Something a simple rename could fix (Medibang Plus perhaps?).

Some of the options from other versions of the Medibang apps are either renamed or missing, this combined with the lack of visual documentation makes the initial impression somewhat more frustrating to use if you are already used to other versions of Medibang and are expecting similar features. The most appalling being the lack of custom brushes, neither script or png brushes can be made with the new app. However it is worth saying that Medibang Pro is still a brand new app so these features could arrive or be fixed in new updates.

The UI can feel rather intrusive at times, the menus can overlap work pretty easily. Even with the transparency option it doesn't fix the problem all the way. A zen/full screen option like what Sketchbook and Tayasui has could solve this problem vastly and would make it a too tier competitor to Procreate which seems to have the same issue to me.

Medibang's track record of starting apps with the same functionality has me a bit concerned about how well upkeep on this new Pro App will be. So far there's: Firealpaca, Medibang Paint Pro, the original Medibang app, Jump Paint, and now the new Pro App. The only thing that might alleviate the situation is the possibility of retiring or merging redundant apps, but I am not sure if that is a good idea either.

Overall I would rate it a mid A or high B so far. It's very good but it could be better. With some updates and some additional features I could easily see this becoming a top tier competitor to procreate in the future.
