Okay this is unforgivable, I know. You sent this prompt over two months ago. TWO. This ask has been sitting in my inbox since the 18th of January, so you probably won't even remember sending this but I promise you I've been thinking about it constantly and waiting to have free time to work on it and I have this tendency to leave things unfinished so this is me working through that as well lol

Without further ado, here it is ❤️

Out of Order - 744 words

Evans is in the boys' bathroom. She's in the boys' bathroom and she's crying.

One of her hands is gripping the sink, while the other fruitlessly wipes the tears that keep escaping.

She hasn't noticed his arrival, and Sirius doesn't bother clearing his throat. “I'm sure there's a perfectly logical reason for this.”

She makes a startled noise and turns to face him, her expression a mixture of anger and sadness. It's comical, really, so Sirius laughs.

“There is,” she mutters as she wipes her nose with the sleeve of her jumper. Her voice lacks the edge she usually aims at him— and at James, too, though Sirius can't help but notice a slight difference there.

He walks towards her and hands her his monogrammed tissue - he's never used it for this purpose specifically, but it has proved to be useful during the occasional prank or after a rough full moon - which she grabs immediately. She doesn't thank him, but he doesn't expect her to.

“Ah well, that's all I needed to know. It's not like you're invading my personal space or something.”

She lifts an eyebrow and eyes him curiously, looking more like her usual self. “I'm sorry, is there a plaque or an inscription that I haven't noticed? Does House Black monogram bathrooms as well as tissues?”

“Not that I'm aware of, no. Don't give my mother ideas, though, she might actually try to do that.”

She makes an attempt at a smile, but it quickly turns into a quiet sob.

“Apparently there can only be one crying girl per bathroom, and Myrtle has claimed the one across the corridor as hers so it's out of order,” she explains as she tries to regain control of her emotions, “and I thought this one was empty since everyone is heading down to watch the match.”

“You were right... for the most part. Why aren't you going then?”

“No reason,” she replies, her voice even, but she's not looking at him.

Sirius thinks he knows why. He suspects it has to do with the good luck kiss that Cornelia Kettleburn gave James at breakfast and how quickly Lily disappeared after that.

“Cool. I'm not going either. Fancy going to the Astronomy tower for a smoke?”

She looks taken aback. “I— wait, why aren't you going?”

In truth Sirius wants to go, and James is going to kill him for this, but lately he's been claiming that he no longer has feelings for Lily, and Sirius hates being lied to, so technically this is just payback.

“James got on my nerves so I'm skipping the match in protest,” he adds with a shrug and it's the truth, because it wouldn't be fair to lie. “So, are we smoking or not? Got a fag I can borrow?”

She's not an idiot: she knows this is an olive branch of sorts. Sirius can tell she's deciding whether to believe him or not; after a moment she sighs, and Sirius knows he's won.

“Haven't you got your own? Merlin, you're cheap,” she says while producing a pack of cigarettes from her satchel and handing it to him, a smirk on her face. He's glad to see that she seems to have calmed down significantly.

“I'm trying to quit so I stopped carrying them around,” he replies and grabs one, putting it in the breast pocket of his vest.

“Looks like it's working,” she notes as she fixes her appearance in front of the mirror and readies herself to leave the room.

“Absolutely.”

“Why are you mad at Potter anyway? Thought you two were inseparable,” she asks as she walks towards the door, a step ahead of him so that he can't see her face.

“Can't tell you, it's a secret.”

She huffs. “You lot are starting to sound ridiculous with all these secrets,” she whips her head towards him, her disapproval clear on her face, though he's almost certain this is just another way of disguising her curiosity. “Is this little group of yours a cult or something?”

“It's a counterculture,” he explains as he exits the bathroom, “how else are we going to beat those bigoted dickheads? The only way to fight a cult is with another cult.”

He's just joking, but the idea doesn't sound half bad to his ears.

Apparently Lily disagrees, because she snorts. Loudly. “Not sure about that logic but you do you, I guess.”

“Thanks for the support.”

“Anytime, Black.”

of the chaotic besties variety, yes absolutely! and soon!!!

of the romantic variety, no...unless you squint and see what you want to see, in which case, be my guest.

(if you meant the latter, you would not be the first to want a dash of sirius and lily in this fic lolol. which i do feel responsible for encouraging because my blackevans dynamic will always involve them flirting endlessly with each other. but like...for fun? i don't fault anyone who ships them though at all because i think they would be so hilarious and awful together. james encourages the good in both of them but they absolutely encouarge the Worst in each other. so my jily will always prevail as endgame...but i'm not against some hilarious shenanigans along the way. not in IBN though!)

I was rereading Prisoner of Azkaban and I completely forgot that Sirius was canonically described as James and Lily’s best friend? It’s mentioned way too many times to be a mere coincidence:

“Why hadn’t anyone ever mentioned the fact that Harry’s parents had died because their best friend had betrayed them?”

“He was going to live with Sirius Black, his parents’ best friend … He felt dazed.”

“For maybe half an hour, a glorious half hour, he had believed he would be living with Sirius from now on . . . his parents’ best friend.”

“He was my mum and dad’s best friend. He’s a convicted murderer, but he’s broken out of Wizard prison and he’s on the run.”

It’s not like the text had to include Lily here. She was not involved in the story of their animagi transformations or the creation of the map. Nor are Remus or Peter ever linked to Lily in such a way – their friendship with James and Sirius is repeatedly emphasized, and I think it’s probable they were friendly with Lily as well, but their own connection to her is never textually highlighted the way Sirius’s is. So I think the emphasis of Sirius being Lily’s best friend as well is purposeful (and even if it wasn’t, it doesn’t matter, it’s textually canon regardless)

It’s unclear when or how they became friends, but I love that James was clearly not the link connecting them together – Lily and Sirius remained in contact with each other entirely independently from him, as her letter proves. I remember reading somewhere that Sirius is the only one of Lily’s canon relationships that’s about her receiving support rather than giving it, which is what she deserves.

I think the revelation of Lily and Snape being best friends has overshadowed her connection to Sirius in the fandom, which sucks, because I think Deathly Hallows paralleled these two friendships in really interesting ways:

Lily got sorted into Gryffindor and looked back sadly at Snape … and then turned away from Sirius, who specifically tried to make room for her at the house table.

Adult!Lily wrote a letter with “lots of love” to Sirius … only for Snape, her former best friend, to tear it apart and claim it for himself after she and Sirius had both died.

Anyway sorry I went off a little lol, I just love these two + James a lot <3

Sirius aand Lily friendship is so underrated and again I blame the movies for making it seem like her and Remus were besties when Remus didn't even mention her once. The letter which Lily wrote to Sirius clearly indicates that she is very comfortable around him, she is secure enough in her relationship with James that she doesn't hesitates to invite Sirius over so he can cheer up James. She even shares gossip with him and I can just imagine Blackevans catching up on tea every other week and bitching about people had they lived

"Go on, Evans." Sirius Black muttered softly.

Lily slid her desk mate a disdainful scowl and ignored him.

"He cursed a fourth year," he continued. "The poor fellow was laid up in hospital for three days."

Lily waited until Professor McGonagall's back was turned before whispering, "If you want to get back at Mulciber so badly, why don't you do it yourself?"

"Because I know you want to."

Continuing on with her notetaking, she purposefully did not acknowledge this assertion.

"And because you cast that nappy rash jinx better than anyone I've ever seen."

The corners of Lily's mouth twitched but she kept her eyes on her parchment.

"C'mon..." Black crooned. "He'll think it was me anyway. What have you got to lose?"

"My badge?" Lily shot back.

The look he gave her was alarmingly earnest. "What's the point of being Prefect if you can't get away with something every now and again?"

Her gaze darted across the room to where Mulciber and Avery sat heads together and muttering in the back of the class. She was loath to admit that Black had a point. Ever since the start of term, those two had been especially brutal. It would feel so good to give into the vindictiveness coursing through her veins.

The longer she stared at the Slytherin boys, the more her resolve crumbled.

Silently, Lily slid her wand out of the inside pocket of her robes and laid it across her lap. Sirius' eyes returned lazily to the front, the picture of nonchalance, but a sharp smirk lingered at his mouth.

She turned the wand slowly in her hand, the incantation barely a quiver on her exhale, followed by a soft whoosh from beneath the desk.

Lily didn't watch to see if her jinx had landed. Instead, she returned her focus to her transfiguration notes and waited for the inevitable.

It didn't happen right away, just a slight rustle from the behind them. Then, after a few minutes, the rustling turned to fidgeting which turned to downright squirming.

Lily listened to the escalating discomfort while clenching her teeth to keep from giggling.

Next to her, Black's shoulders shook with silent laughter, until finally, there was the clatter of a chair and Professor McGonagall's steely stare whipped around to take in Mulciber hopping from foot to foot while violently scratching his jock.

"Fuck's sake, man," James Potter blurted from the table behind Lily and Sirius. "Have some dignity."

The entire sixth year class burst into sniggers and cackles.

"Mr. Mulciber!" McGonagall clipped sternly. "You will stop fapping about this instant or you will leave my class."

Mulciber's replying grunt could hardly be considered coherent, but he seemed to realize his situation was beyond help or explanation. He cast one last hate-filled expression toward James and Sirius and then rushed out the door with tears in his eyes.

Professor McGonagall attempted to call everyone's attention back to the front, and Lily had to cover her mouth with her hand to hide her snort.

Black nudged her elbow and muttered, "Nice one, Evans."

"You know," a low voice interjected from over her shoulder. Lily glanced around to see Potter leaning forward over his desk to look between them. "I'm not sure I like the two of you being friends."

"We're not friends," Lily hissed, but to her eternal mortification there was a fondness in her tone of voice.

Black raised a sardonic eyebrow. "Allies, then?"

Shaking her head, she bit the inside of her cheek to hold back a grin.

"Whatever you call it," Potter added quietly, "It's unsettling to see the two of you working together."

His expression looked anything but wary. He looked positively giddy. Lily's breath caught at the sparkle in his eyes, followed by the involuntary smile that seemed to take over her face anytime his attention was solely focused on her.

She internally chastised herself for her ridiculous response to his proximity and attempted to quash the feelings heating her middle.

"Don't get used to it."

"I'm not so sure, Prongs," whispered Black smugly. "She's had a taste of delinquency, now. I think she's one of us."

Potter's eyes widened in mock fear. "Absolutely terrifying."

"Potter!" McGonagall cut in harshly. "Sit. Down."

James shrank back into his chair and mumbled a quick, "Sorry, Professor."

McGonagall gave all three of them a pointed glare, then began her lecture again as if there hadn't been an interruption at all. Lily felt somewhat scolded by the expression, but the satisfied retribution settling into her bones far outweighed it.

Something else lingered in the space between her lungs as well.

Something like camaraderie.

As always, excellent work! I loved the chapter sososososooso much. Lily being a baddass, poor poor Graham who's definitely gonna get in trouble and gonna get himself killed, the Blackevans friendship! THE JILY REUNION! AND THE SNAPE AND LILY CONFRONTATION! BEAUTIFUL ALL OF IT!

Except the roll credits, you monster :( I cried.

Anyway, I just hope you know when Lily was in the interrogation with Crouch (ugh!) and she talked about the picture of Carter-Myles and the Minister I just kept picturing this:

And boy if that wasn't hilarious in my head.

It had been a few days since Lily moved in and in that time she’d only seen James’ shapely arse running away from her during his morning jog. And once she swore she spotted both him and Sirius at Tesco’s but when she put her scandalous three bottles of white in her basket the pair had vanished.  Lily tried to not think too much of it. Maybe she’d just hallucinated them. Though she couldn’t help but recall the incident when she scavenged her bags for life together—despite having probably twenty at this point, she could never seem to find them— to do a big shop. She’d be hosting a few friends, and colleagues she trusted not to be creepy about knowing where she lived, for a housewarming. She’d figure out how to get said house ready before Saturday, right after she’d settled on a menu. If push came to shove, she could always… Well, shove everything into her bedroom and hope no one goes snooping.

If there was anything she hated more than she did her sister’s ability to whisper-call her a freak without her parents – being in the same room even – overhearing, it was the sight of the two Gryffindor boys – the banes of her existence – standing just outside McGonagall’s classroom. One’s presence was valid, the other’s aggravating and – she didn’t doubt this for a second – orchestrated so as to maximize her trauma. She was about to serve, after all, her first ever detention and if she knew anything about the two classmates that were waiting for her, it was that they had mastered the skill of gloating, had practically turned it into an art form. “Please don’t make things worse,” one of them - the 15-year-old bespectacled wizard - begged the other. His hand tugged at the curls on top of his head, while he looked at his friend with a degree of most uncharacteristic solemnity. “If I’m to have any chance whatsoever, I –” “Evans!” Sirius Black, wearing a positively shit-eating grin, exclaimed. Potter – for some reason or other, she couldn’t fathom it being out of any sort of embarrassment related to his causing her to get stuck in detention with his best friend – flushed, his mouth pressed into a thin line now. “How lovely to see you! You seem even more foul-tempered than usual, may I add.” Black included the latter as if it was a compliment of the highest order and not the clear insult she knew it to be.

You alright?" Sirius, not even bothering to look at her, responded. "Everything sucks, and I'm dying." "Uh," Lily rolled her eyes. "You are such a drama queen." She laid down next to him and joined him on the floor. "Can't you just let me wallow?"

There was someone coming.

Was there? No. He was being paranoid.

No - shit! Definitely someone coming.

He whipped the invisibility cloak out of his pocket and managed to throw it over himself just before the door behind him opened, his heart suddenly in his mouth.

Merlin’s arse. This wasn’t creepy of him at all, being invisible in a girls’ bathroom.

He was going to murder James. He’d been so bloody adamant recently about wanting to find out the secret of this place before they left school - nobody really knew the story behind why that girl had died in here years ago - that Sirius had decided to come for a nosey round on his free period.

And he didn’t even have the map! Bloody Wormtail, insisting that everyone knew this place was abandoned so that he obviously wouldn’t need it -

He hadn’t actually even paid attention to who had entered the bathroom, as he was so focused on inching away as they passed him whilst at the same time trying to crouch to hide his feet. While also trying to hold his breath and prevent himself exhaling in frustration.

A quick glance now told him it was two of his fellow seventh years.

His eyes darted around the room, trying to figure out how he could make a fast exit without the girls seeing the door opening by itself. They had gone straight over to the sinks opposite, meaning the mirrors gave a perfect reflection of his only obvious escape.

“… think he’ll ask you?” Lydia Johnston was asking as she pressed some powder onto her nose.

“I should hope so, the amount we’ve been flirting this week,”

okay so full transparency: i've never really read much fic. i don't have a ton of free time set aside for creative/recreational purposes and the time i do have, i use to write because that just fills me up a lot more. however, i made a commitment to consume more fan-created work in 2024 and i succeeded in that!!! there were still periods where i wasn't able to read much, which has lead to an ever-growing tbr, but i wanted to take a moment at the beginning of this new year to share a hodge-podge of some (completed) fics that wow'ed me this year. a great deal of these are several years old and likely 'old news,' but i got to experience their magic for the first time in 2024 and want to spend some time showing them some love!!! in no particular order:

in losing grip by @keep--driving - 2024 was the year of me learning to love a good second chances au. this fic has all the trope-y goodness you could ever want, along with toe-curling kiss scenes, the perfect kind of humour that makes you squeal into your pillow or porridge or wherever you find yourself, and characters that you just love and root for so easily. i especially loved her take on james and lily's mums and the ways they navigate the world with and beside their children. i read a large chunk of this fic on my kindle as i pushed a stroller this autumn and i will forever associate it with peace and calmness. i'll be re-reading it soon!!!

i love you (ain't that the worst thing you ever heard) by lizardcookie - enter: the other trope i fell in love with in 2024—failed friends with benefits. the way this fic deals with grief in such a poignant, devastating, incredible way had my jaw on the floor. yes there is sexy jily, but there is also giggly jily and insecure jily and scared jily and earnest jily and oh mannnn this is the good ish. the small detail of lily coming around to sirius and james both through her help with the flying motorbike. i love the minute breakdown of lily's thick walls until they come tumbling down and james is right there, waiting, as he always is, patient and Good.

i would drink a case of you, darling by treacherous_talks - one of the tags on this fic is "a good old fashioned 'lily and james get together fic' because there aren't enough of them" so obviously i was in from the jump. this magical fic does such an excellent job at highlighting exactly what it means to be a teenager with a crush on another teenager who you think has a crush on you but you're not completely sure and so you can't ruin it because what if you're wrong. that is such a jily sweet spot i don't often see done as well as it is in this fic!!!

poison of trust by soopsiedaisies - not a jily fic! gasp! in fact, it's remus and sirius (not wolfstar) who are actually not usually as compelling a relationship as some of the other marauder era possibilities. but this fic made me eat my words because it is delicious. the part that i literally included in my ao3 bookmark and that i think about all the time is when remus tries to accuse sirius of equating harry and james and sirius says, oooooh i have chills thinking about it, "i dare you to finish that sentence." YES guarddog sirius black! his position as sole protector of the potter family will never not be important to me and this fic highlights that in such a unique and compelling way.

bad day wall by @apalapucian - there's nothing i could say about this incredible fic that hasn't been said, and recently, but truly—jayne is such a phenomenal wordsmith. this has a dash of 'texting fic,' but make it canon compliant and so beautiful it makes you wanna diiiiiie. the blackevans is unmatched, of course. but james's head-over-heels-ness for lily also has to be mentioned. i love every single one of his batty contributions to the bad day wall as he mopes and wades through all the chaos of trying (and failing) to get over lily evans.

The Guide to Becoming a Better Man for Lily Evans by bronzeagepizzeria - the shirtless james potter agenda is quite special to me, which needs to be stated right out the gate, really. the shirtless james potter who is shirtless on purpose just to get under his dream girl's skin agenda is an ascension i have yet to come back down from.

Of Chrysalism by @maraudersftw - i shall give you this, line, dangling on a stick as a perfectly buttered and garlic'ed (??) carrot, enticing you to cast your cares aside and come read this fic: "He’s spoilt, and persistent, and endearing, and she’s hopeless." like??????? yeah. okay. sure. i'll pretend that i'm capable of returning from that in this lifetime. but actually: james "my feelings matter, too" potter is so important and i love the agency this fic gives him!!!

Scenes from a Hogsmeade Pub by @bcdaily - i think i read this years ago. perhaps. idk i was basically a baby when it was published in 2012. but i recently stumbled upon it (again? maybe?) and just absolutely devoured it. this is quintessential jily to me, in each iteration, as they grow and learn each other and finally, finally, finally choose each other. each of these scenes is so carefully crafted to showcase really important moments in their relationship, but does it using really unimportant moments, which is genius. it's the grand fromage of showing, not telling, and this would absolutely be the first week assigned reading on my syllabus if i got to live out my dream as a professor on jily.

say goodbye to my heart tonight by spinawren - my bookmark for this was literally just "SQUEEEEEEE" and i don't exactly know what i meant by that, but i think it's more eloquent than anything i could come up with here. the premise of this fic is genius: james and lily repeatedly having 'one-night stands' with each other until they realise they've accidentally started dating. but james potter's devotion to being in lily evans' presence is what makes this fic belong on the top shelf!

Bluebird by ocean_away - whewwww, this fic knocked me back in a way i didn't expect. it's a second chances fic of a different calibre all around, but what stands out to me the most in this particular fic is the way james and lily are both shown to so seamlessly grow. they begin as two broken, purposefully hurtful individuals (read: teenagers) and become young adults who choose goodness and each other over and over, even though it's not easy. i feel proud of them, when i read this fic. what a labour of love for our favourite couple.

The Way the Light Looks by @stonecoldhedwig - i have nothing more to say about this fic than this: BEST KISS SCENE I HAVE EVER AND WILL EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!

Whispers in the Dark by @yallthemwitches - okayyyy so it's difficult to choose just one of tay's fics, but this is such a stand-out to me. friends to lovers!!!! james "but i've never lied to you" potter, i want to kiss you on the MOUTH! he's so earnest, so pure, so "no actually i just wanted to see you" when he has no business being such a sweetheart. honourable mention: the beyond-precious proposal scene at the end.

Love is Complicated by @theesteemedladydebourgh - this fic feels like sitting in the most beautiful library in the world watching rain trail down the ornate, darkened windows—and then the hottest professor on earth walks up to you and snogs you without preamble. except it's made better by the fact that he is somehow both james potter and an indiana jones variant? listen. just read it. then squeal and kick your feet with me, okay?

Sunshine in my Eyes by monroeslittle - another fic i devoured on my kindle this year (but definitely not during standardised testing at school when i was supposed to be actively monitoring teenagers for academic integrity and technically signed an oath that i locked all my electronics in the closet). ahem. this is some of the most rewarding angst i have ever read, which is genuinely some of the highest praise i could ever bestow on someone. lily going to james for lessons on how to kiss and the entire scene that follows will follow me forever. they're so endearing and sweet and did not deserve all they went through. but. angst with a happy ending xx

Something about Lily, James and Sirius being a power trio during the First Wizarding War always gets to me. Lily and James were married, Sirius was James’s best friend and then became both their best friend, he was the best man as their wedding, according to JKR the three of them were the only ones at Harry’s christening, the three of them also intended to celebrate Harry’s first birthday together before Sirius had to go on an Order mission. Lily and James wanted Sirius as their Secret-Keeper and actively rejected Dumbledore to choose him, Sirius then persuaded them to change the plan and they kept it between themselves. He realized they were dead and immediately wanted to raise their son.

Lily’s letter to Sirius after Harry’s first birthday is so tender because it’s the perfect example of how they worked? James was frustrated cooped up, he tried to hide it from Lily (and was possibly trying to hide it from Sirius), but she noticed anyway and wrote to Sirius about it, telling him to visit because he was the one who could cheer James up. And Lily clearly relied on Sirius as a source of comfort and outlet of gossip for her own sake as well, which is one of the few times a woman in HP actively sought out a male character for emotional support.

Whether it’s platonic or romantic, I think three of them were soulmates.

She's not someone who blindy follows the rules. She's not all soft and kind (she loved people like Severus, James and Sirius, those are not the softest and most kind people you can find on the planet, I would say she loves competent people with darker leaning humor). She's not besties with Remus.

My unpopular opinion about this character

His anger in book 5 was totally understandable. Also, he's not dumb and oblivious. That boy has very much raw potential and his intuition is off the charts. He just doesn't get the time to study and do all his homework all the time when Voldi keeps sending new murder plots his way.

Also he's pretty good in potions, just not with Snape breathing down his neck (sure, the Prince's potion book helped BUT if he would be shit the best instructions wouldn't help him one bit)
