Okay this is unforgivable, I know. You sent this prompt over two months ago. TWO. This ask has been sitting in my inbox since the 18th of January, so you probably won't even remember sending this but I promise you I've been thinking about it constantly and waiting to have free time to work on it and I have this tendency to leave things unfinished so this is me working through that as well lol

Without further ado, here it is ❤️

Out of Order - 744 words

Evans is in the boys' bathroom. She's in the boys' bathroom and she's crying.

One of her hands is gripping the sink, while the other fruitlessly wipes the tears that keep escaping.

She hasn't noticed his arrival, and Sirius doesn't bother clearing his throat. “I'm sure there's a perfectly logical reason for this.”

She makes a startled noise and turns to face him, her expression a mixture of anger and sadness. It's comical, really, so Sirius laughs.

“There is,” she mutters as she wipes her nose with the sleeve of her jumper. Her voice lacks the edge she usually aims at him— and at James, too, though Sirius can't help but notice a slight difference there.

He walks towards her and hands her his monogrammed tissue - he's never used it for this purpose specifically, but it has proved to be useful during the occasional prank or after a rough full moon - which she grabs immediately. She doesn't thank him, but he doesn't expect her to.

“Ah well, that's all I needed to know. It's not like you're invading my personal space or something.”

She lifts an eyebrow and eyes him curiously, looking more like her usual self. “I'm sorry, is there a plaque or an inscription that I haven't noticed? Does House Black monogram bathrooms as well as tissues?”

“Not that I'm aware of, no. Don't give my mother ideas, though, she might actually try to do that.”

She makes an attempt at a smile, but it quickly turns into a quiet sob.

“Apparently there can only be one crying girl per bathroom, and Myrtle has claimed the one across the corridor as hers so it's out of order,” she explains as she tries to regain control of her emotions, “and I thought this one was empty since everyone is heading down to watch the match.”

“You were right... for the most part. Why aren't you going then?”

“No reason,” she replies, her voice even, but she's not looking at him.

Sirius thinks he knows why. He suspects it has to do with the good luck kiss that Cornelia Kettleburn gave James at breakfast and how quickly Lily disappeared after that.

“Cool. I'm not going either. Fancy going to the Astronomy tower for a smoke?”

She looks taken aback. “I— wait, why aren't you going?”

In truth Sirius wants to go, and James is going to kill him for this, but lately he's been claiming that he no longer has feelings for Lily, and Sirius hates being lied to, so technically this is just payback.

“James got on my nerves so I'm skipping the match in protest,” he adds with a shrug and it's the truth, because it wouldn't be fair to lie. “So, are we smoking or not? Got a fag I can borrow?”

She's not an idiot: she knows this is an olive branch of sorts. Sirius can tell she's deciding whether to believe him or not; after a moment she sighs, and Sirius knows he's won.

“Haven't you got your own? Merlin, you're cheap,” she says while producing a pack of cigarettes from her satchel and handing it to him, a smirk on her face. He's glad to see that she seems to have calmed down significantly.

“I'm trying to quit so I stopped carrying them around,” he replies and grabs one, putting it in the breast pocket of his vest.

“Looks like it's working,” she notes as she fixes her appearance in front of the mirror and readies herself to leave the room.

“Absolutely.”

“Why are you mad at Potter anyway? Thought you two were inseparable,” she asks as she walks towards the door, a step ahead of him so that he can't see her face.

“Can't tell you, it's a secret.”

She huffs. “You lot are starting to sound ridiculous with all these secrets,” she whips her head towards him, her disapproval clear on her face, though he's almost certain this is just another way of disguising her curiosity. “Is this little group of yours a cult or something?”

“It's a counterculture,” he explains as he exits the bathroom, “how else are we going to beat those bigoted dickheads? The only way to fight a cult is with another cult.”

He's just joking, but the idea doesn't sound half bad to his ears.

Apparently Lily disagrees, because she snorts. Loudly. “Not sure about that logic but you do you, I guess.”

“Thanks for the support.”

“Anytime, Black.”

Something about Lily, James and Sirius being a power trio during the First Wizarding War always gets to me. Lily and James were married, Sirius was James’s best friend and then became both their best friend, he was the best man as their wedding, according to JKR the three of them were the only ones at Harry’s christening, the three of them also intended to celebrate Harry’s first birthday together before Sirius had to go on an Order mission. Lily and James wanted Sirius as their Secret-Keeper and actively rejected Dumbledore to choose him, Sirius then persuaded them to change the plan and they kept it between themselves. He realized they were dead and immediately wanted to raise their son.

Lily’s letter to Sirius after Harry’s first birthday is so tender because it’s the perfect example of how they worked? James was frustrated cooped up, he tried to hide it from Lily (and was possibly trying to hide it from Sirius), but she noticed anyway and wrote to Sirius about it, telling him to visit because he was the one who could cheer James up. And Lily clearly relied on Sirius as a source of comfort and outlet of gossip for her own sake as well, which is one of the few times a woman in HP actively sought out a male character for emotional support.

Whether it’s platonic or romantic, I think three of them were soulmates.

For james and sirius I think seven suits them well bec at its core its such a heartfelt and lovely song about childhood friendship plus this part: “And I've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted, your dad is always mad and that must be why. And I think you should come live with me and we can be pirates, then you won't have to cry or hide in the closet. And just like a folk song our love will be passed on”

(ps. love your lily’s arc tswift playlist so much!! I was just listening to question and its very jily coded, could also fit in with chap 48 bec of their first kiss but then the lyric “did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room and every single one of your friends was making fun of you but 15 secs later they were clapping too” came up and I squealed with delight, because i can’t stop thinking how all of their friends are quite literally or figuratively going to be applauding them for finally getting together when they do)

I wrote about Lily Mary Marlene and Sirius listening to music! It's linked here but i'll also post it. its for @maraudersgirlsprompts under the prompt 'try' (get it cause they're trying new music)

anyways here is Sheer Heart Attack:

“Alright girls?” Sirius said as he walked into their room.

“Jesus Christ!” Lily exclaimed in surprise as she scrambled off of her bed and straightened her clothes. “How do you keep getting in here?”

“I invited him, I figured he’d want to hear my new albums that I got for Christmas,” Mary responded digging through her trunk.

“Okay,” Lily said squinting at Mary, trying to figure out if this was some kind of joke before clarifying, “that doesn’t really answer my question. How does he keep getting up the stairs?”

“I imagine he walks,” Marlene said from where she was lounging in the purple beanbag chair in the corner. Sirius walked over and plopped down on the floor next to her.

“Yeah, that is typically how I approach staircases,” Sirius agreed, stretching out his legs and leaning back on his hands, “but when I go down sometimes, I’ll ride the railing.”

“That’s true I have seen him do that,” Mary said as she grabbed a vinyl with a mostly black record sleeve and headed over to join the others.

Lily rolled her eyes as she realized that they were fucking with her.

“Okay, this one is called Sheer Heart Attack. It’s brand new, it only came out in November but it's already huge. A couple of the singles are all over the radio back home, but I waited until I was back here to listen to it fully.” Mary said.

“I-“ Lily started but then weighed her options and decided that Sirius was unlikely to solve this mystery for her tonight, and she hadn’t really had much time with her friends since coming back from break. She chose to let it go and join the group. “Do you want me to set up the player or do you have it?”

“I’ve got it,” Mary said, smiling at Lily brightly. “Did you hear any of this back home? It’s Queen.”

“No not much, my sister isn't really one for rock music,” Lily said sitting down across from Sirius with her back to the window. It was technically true, Petunia despised rock music, but she had a particular distaste for Queen since she had heard a broadcast speculating about the sexuality of the lead singer.

“Oh, but it’s not even proper rock, it’s more like glam rock.” Mary reasoned, taking the record out of the sleeve.

“Do you know what any of this means?” Marlene stage whispered to Sirius.

“I think they’re talking about the different breeds of music.” Sirius stage whispered back.

“Yeah, Petunia doesn’t much care for Queen though, and its genres of music, not breeds.” Lily corrected.

“She’s got a problem with Freddie then?” Mary guessed.

“A bit yeah, she’s…” Lily searched for a polite term, “traditional.”

“Oh yeah,” Mary hummed, “I forget that your family is like properly religious.”

“They’re not though, Petunias just gotten real into it since I left. Something about them thinking witchcraft is an abomination.”

“No offense Lily but your sister’s kind of a bitch.” Marlene said as she took out a pack of cigarettes from the pocket of her jacket pocket.

"And Miss Evans, you will be partnering with," Slughorn glanced down to his list once more, "Mr Black."

Sirius made his way over, sitting on a stool next to Lily and leaning back as Lily got her notes out.

"So I'm guessing you're going to be zero help with this", Lily huffed, beginning to work without him.

Sirius frowned and leaned back forwards, letting the front stool legs bang loudly against the floor.

"What makes you think that?"

Lily snorted, "Um. Literally everything about you", she glanced him up and down, "You never do any work."

Sirius scoffed, "Wow, we've been classmates for years now and you still don't know me at all, Evans."

Lily rolled her eyes and left to grab ingredients from the cupboard. As she was gone, Sirius read the chalkboard, of what Slughorn had actually assigned them to do.

She came back, arms filled with various jars, and began to read her notes once again.

Sirius, in the meantime, began preparing the ingredients himself. He had finished within two minutes, and by the time Lily had reread her notes, wrote more notes, and reread those, Sirius has began making paper birds and had started charming them to fly around and peck at the other student's heads.

Lily glanced up as a paper bird hit her forehead.

"What are you doing, Black?" She spotted the prepared ingredients, "Did you do that?"

"Yeah", He shrugged, in the middle of making another paper bird.

Lily stared at him in wonder for a moment before shaking herself out of it and beginning to make the potion.

Sirius leaned over a few minutes later, only inches from Lily's face, making her turn slightly red, "You should add two drops of essence of comfrey before it boils."

Lily huffed, "I was just about to."

"Okay", Sirius held his arms up in mock defense, "I'll just sit here... making these birds."

One of the birds landed on Lily's head and pulled at her hair.

Lily swatted it away, "Okay, fine! You can help. God, you're so immature."

"I don't control Adeodatus", Sirius mumbled, grabbing an eyeball and squished it as he dropped it into the cauldron.

"Adeodatus?" Lily laughed.

Sirius grinned, perking up at her laugh, "That's his name."

She laughed again before turning back to her work.

As Lily heated the potion up, she turned to Sirius once again, "Why did you squish the eyeball? It only says to drop it in."

"I don't know", Sirius admitted, "But it makes sense to. We're not putting this potion at much heat and there's no ingredients in it that could melt the eyeballs in order for it to really make an impact for the potion. Squishing it beforehand will probably allow for the eyeball to really mix into the potion instead of just floating in it, so the vitreous humour can actually be absorbed."

Lily stared at him for a moment before turning to her notes to jot that down.

Sirius stirred the potion whilst she wrote, glancing to her every now and then.

"Hey, looks like it's all done."

Lily peered into her cauldron, "Oh, yeah. That looks brilliant."

Sirius turned to her with a grin, "Probably a bit unfair of Sluggie to pair his top students together."

Lily glanced around to the room; most of their classmates were still preparing the ingredients.

"What are we meant to do now?"

Sirius handed her a piece of parchment and glanced to the birds.

Lily smiled and began trying to make her own.

They spent the rest of class making various paper objects together. Their forearms and hands occasionally grazing against each other's, making them turn to the other with a smile.

Ooh! The cruelty! Where is the button for “I don’t ship it, but it’s an interesting thought experiment”?

1. Why don’t you ship it?

Because I like Jily too much. The same goes for other Lily ships — Snily, Remus/Lily, Jegulus, etc. I’m too attached to my favourite pair being soul mates (even though I don’t even really believe in all that) to consider other options for them.

To clarify, when I say “I don’t ship it”, I mean I don’t like reading it as end game. Fics that explore Sirius/Lily (or any of those other ships to be honest) but ultimately have Jily as end game are a-okay by me and can be absolutely fascinating and even add to the shop (but of course you already know that! 😉).

2. What would have make you like it?

As end game? I don’t think I could change my brain chemistry enough for that to be possible. Perhaps a very well done polyamorous relationship between James/Sirius/Lily, but then that probably doesn’t count as just Sirius/Lily anymore, does it?

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Based on her relationship with James and what we know of Lily, I think Sirius is the best second option for her. If James didn’t exist, I probably *would* ship her with Sirius (but then that would be some serious canon bending). They clearly share a sense of humour and values, they are of similar intelligent, and they could bond over their dysfunctional families. To me, it makes far more sense for Lily to be close to Sirius than Remus or Snape (if they hadn’t fallen out) as an adult.

As I mentioned before, BlackEvans can also be super interesting to explore as a pre-Jily relationship (CF My Best Friend’s Girl by the wonderful you!). And I just love it as a platonic ship! In my mind, they became as close as James and Sirius, and it was Lily who first suggested he should be Harry’s godfather.
