BILLY BATSON, BIRTHDAY BOY: A TALE OF XENOPHOBIA, ELECTION FRAUD, THE PERILS OF BEING UNDOCUMENTED, SKELETAL SINGING TELEGRAMS, AND PETTY REVENGE

It is somewhat well-known that Superman’s date of birth is leap day, Feb. 29 (though the Kents celebrate his birthday on the day when he crash-landed on Earth, which varies by canon). Time Magazine even had Superman on its cover on Feb. 29, 1988 to celebrate the Soup Man’s big 5-0. (collected sources)

Less well known is that he is birthday buddies with Captain Marvel (Billy Batson/Shazam! — the DC/Fawcett Comics hero, not the Marvel one), as shown here on the 1976 DC Wall Calendar: 

Illustrated calendar for the month of February with various DC and historical characters labeled. The space for February 29 has Superman’s face on it, and is labeled: “Birthday of Kal-El (Superman).” An extra, unnumbered space next to it shows Captain Marvel and says: “Captain Marvel chose February 29 for his birthday, too!”

You may have noticed that while February 29th “is” Kal-El’s birthday, the caption for Captain Marvel is a bit more involved. You see, February 29th is not Captain Marvel’s birthday because he was born on that date. Oh no, that would be far too simple. No, this is Golden Age comics, so we must have the most ridiculous, CONVOLUTED reasoning for why Captain Marvel’s official “birthday” is February 29th. 

Buckle up, kiddos. It’s time for:

*:･ﾟ✧*:･ﾟ✧CANDLE’S CANON COMPENDIUM© on Billy Batson’s Birthday: Golden Age Edition✧･ﾟ: *✧･ﾟ:*

Some out-of-universe background information: 

Whether Captain Marvel and Billy Batson are the same person or two different people sharing a body varies across canons. This story takes place in a canon where they are basically considered separate people who are both aware of what is going on when the other is in charge.

Some in-universe [canon is Whiz Comics/Golden Age era] background information: 

Our boy Billy Batson—as a human being who was presumably born at some point—has a birthday. 

His birthdate is not specified in canon, and he himself doesn’t know when when he was born. 

Nevertheless, we can presume that Billy Batson was indeed born at a time and a place. 

Billy is a child who is definitely no older than 14.

Captain Marvel is millennia old. 

Therefore, Billy's birthday is not Captain Marvel’s birthday. 

Captain Marvel does not remember when he was "born" (if the champion of magic could be considered "birthed" for legal purposes).

Captain Marvel’s “birth” predates both the establishment of the United States of America and the invention of birth certificates by several thousand years, as well as the implementation of the Gregorian calendar. 

The Tale:

In Whiz comics #47, published in 1943, Captain Marvel’s birthday (and documentation thereof) became an ISSUE for our intrepid hero, young Billy Batson. 

You see, Billy, as a minor, cannot vote. But he wants to vote. Child Billy is incredibly civic-minded. He is very invested in the local election for the town alderman of the 14th ward. Yes, TOWN ALDERMAN.

Billy decides the appropriate thing to do in this situation is commit election fraud. See, Billy's not old enough to vote, but Captain Marvel is. So Captain Marvel can cast Billy's vote. 

Two comic panels:

Panel one, captioned: “A sudden thought strikes Billy!” Billy says, “Wait a minute! I know someone else in this house, who is a grown man and can vote -- SHAZAM!”

Panel two, captioned: “Billy’s mystic word of power calls forth magic lightning--” The panel shows the word BOOM! in big letters over a lightning strike.

Comic panel, continuing on from the lightning panel, captioned “--and Captain Marvel, mightiest of men!” Captain Marvel asks: “Am I old enough to vote?” The canvasser says: “Why--uh--er--of course! There ain’t no doubt you’re a grown-up man--and a big one at that! Here, sign our list!”

The rival candidate—Mr. Lously—finds out Captain Marvel is planning to vote for his opponent, and wants to intimidate him into staying home. But that won’t work because he’s, well, Captain Marvel. So instead, Lously alights upon the problem you may have already identified: Captain Marvel is undocumented.

Two comic panels:

Panel 1: Captain Marvel says: “My birthday? Why, I was--er--um--ulp!” A white man in a bowler hat with a pipe (Lousely) responds: “Ha, ha! What’s more, are you an American citizen? You may be the great Captain Marvel, but what papers have you to prove you were born in this country?” In a thought bubble, Captain Marvel thinks, “Holy moley! I have no birthday!”

Panel 2: A close-up on Captain Marvel’s confused face with a big question mark. He says, “American citizen? Am I one--or not? And I’ve no official birthday! I never thought of those things in my life before!” A caption reads: And suddenly, Captain Marvel realizes that the cunning politician has laid a finger on a blank spot in his life!

We also get the following great panels, sadly still VERY relevant: 

Two comic panels 

Panel 1: Lousely faces Captain Marvel, who is being restrained by two other men. Lousely says: “Take him to the police, men! He should be arrested! Why, he’s no better than a dangerous alien in this country illegally!” Captain Marvel responds: “Hey, that’s going too far, Lousely!” 

Panel 2: Captain Marvel is breaking away from the men restraining him. Captain Marvel says: “At least give me a chance to find out about my birthday and citizenship!” Lousely says: “I’ll shoot him, so he won’t find out! I’ll call it self-defense in court against an alien!” A caption reads: “The ruthless politician uses violent methods!”

[Sidenote: If anyone wants to write a fic about Billy or Clark or any number of heroes dealing with the bureaucracy & other realities of being undocumented, I will love you forever.]

[Sidenote to the sidenote: The comic is resolved when it turns out that Lousely is an “escaped alien jailbird” and therefore not eligible to run for office. Which. Gross. Do not like. I get that it’s the 40s, but the idea that being undocumented (or an “alien”) automatically makes you a bad person and a criminal is still pretty pervasive today. So. Ugh.]

[Hot take on the sidenote to the sidenote: Mr. Morris, Billy’s candidate, is a milquetoast piece of soggy bread, and does not deserve to win the election. He stopped Cap from going after Lousely after Lousely shot Cap point-blank, and therefore Lousely faced no consequences for his actions. (Like, that’s still a crime, right?? Shooting a superhero? Because heroes are people, and shooting a gun at a person with the stated attempt to kill them is attempted murder.) Morris also told Cap that he had to give Lousely’s supporters the benefit of the doubt when Cap caught them burning people’s votes for Morris, and then again when he caught them trying to vote multiple times in different disguises. Morris took specific steps to ensure his elderly friend—who seems to be suffering from dementia and thinks this is the presidential election for Abraham Lincoln, which was in-universe 78 years ago—gets to the polls, and Cap literally orders this man to vote for Morris at the booth. Not okay. Also, Morris voted for Lousely. Not saying Lousely should’ve won, but Morris is a mildewed dillweed and does not deserve to hold office.]

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming:

So, in search of Cap’s birthday, Billy tries to find his own birth records, but no one has them. His file at city hall is a singular white sheet of paper that reads: “Billy Batson: Orphan — Birthdate Unknown.” This is explicitly the only legal documentation that Billy has.

A comic panel: Billy Batson and a town clerk look at a piece of paper titled “Billy Batson.” Under the title, it says, “Orphan--birthdate unknown.” The rest of the page is blank. Billy says: “Holy moley! Is that all?” The clerk responds: “I’m sorry, Billy! We have no further information! However, I can give you the address of the orphanage you came from! Maybe they have records!”

A nurse at the orphanage Billy was raised in offers to “tell his fortune with cards” in order to find out how old he is. Not sure how that’s supposed to work, but ok. That is apparently proof of citizenship suitable for the US Government’s voting rolls.

The cards reveal that Billy is 3004 years old, to which Billy responds:  “3004 years? Why, that’s ridiculous! I can’t be more than fourteen years old!”

Which. Billy. BILLY. You know about Captain Marvel sharing your body.

Also, he’s really just out here guessing how old he is. (个_个)

The nurse then looks into the past to tell him all about the history of Shazam. And Billy’s like, ok, cool, but this doesn’t help me vote. 

Except then. He has a REVELATION:

Two comic panels

Panel 1: Billy Batson saying: “But wait! It does establish one thing! — My citizenship! Those early Greeks started democracy! At least Captain Marvel is definitely a true member of democracy, and therefore a true American!”

Panel 2: Billy walks down the street, continuing his thought: “Captain Marvel can prove his citizenship that way! But still — what about his birthday? He can’t register till he has that! SHAZAM!”

Billy. Billy. That’s not how citizenship works. I mean, yes, citizenship laws are stupid, but. Having been born in ancient Greece doesn’t make you a US citizen. 

Also, “true member of democracy” = “true American”? L O L

He then goes to a doctor to have medical tests determine his age, and therefore his birthday (?????), but this doesn’t work.

Therefore, Plan A: Election Fraud fails. w(°ｏ°)w

Dreams of election fraud (and Lousely’s actual election fraud) thus thwarted, Captain Marvel still desires to have a birthday. He (’he’ here being Captain Marvel, the three-thousand year old champion of magic, not Billy Batson, the literal child) pouts about it.

Comic panel, captioned: “Alone, Captain Marvel continues to brood!” Marvel pouts with his head in his hands and says: “Other folks have birthdays! Why can’t I? I can’t even have birthday parties in my honor!”

Then, breaking the fourth wall, Captain Marvel turns to the readers, and asks if he can have one of their birthdays. [I don't think Captain Marvel understands how birthdays work.]

Comic Panel: Captain Marvel addresses the reader, saying: “Because you see folks — I still have no birthday! I still have no day I can call my own, like all of you have! Can you help me folks? Who can give me his birthday?” On the plain blue background, we see the words: “How about it, all you loyal follwers of Captain Marvel? He needs a birthday! Who wants to give him one? Write in to the Captain Marvel Club, 49 W. Putnam Ave. Greenwhich Conn, and tell him if he can borrow yours!”

[I don’t think Fawcett Comics knows how birthdays work either.]

. . .

Issues pass. Time goes on. Then comes Whiz Comics #52. The issue opens on Captain Marvel, in full costume, at his office desk, going through the thousands of letters he has received from his fans offering to give him their birthdays. 

There's a knock on the door. Who is it? It's a SINGING TELEGRAM.

Comic panel: Captain Marvel sits at a desk stacked high with papers. We see the back of a singing telegram messenger, who sings “Happy deathday to you! Happy deathday to you! Happy deathday, Captain Marvel! Happy deathday to you!” Captain Marvel says: “???”

Unbeknownst to Marvel, the bearer of the singing telegram is "no ordinary messenger boy." He is actually Dr. Sivana in a mail uniform and skull mask (dun dun dun!). 

Comic panel: Marvel faces the singing telegram messenger, who is now seen from the front. The messenger wears a skull mask over his face and is holding a calendar open to February, with the 29th circled. Underneath the calendar, it says “Happy Death-Day to Capt. Marvel!” The messenger says: "Captain Marvel! You are doomed to die on February 29th! Heh, heh, heh." 

This alerts Captain Marvel to the fact that something is up. But after giving (very slow) chase for approximately half a hallway, he just kinda shrugs and goes back to work. 

He is subsequently lured into a trap. Sivana monologues--with visual aids in the form of a tear-away calendar--about how February 29th will henceforth be known as Captain Marvel's Deathday. Like it would be a holiday or something.

Comic panel: Sivana stands in front of a wall clock that has just passed midnight, and tears away the ‘28′ of a tear-away calendar to reveal that it is now February 29th. He says: “See--after midnight! Throughout the universe, of which I am the rightful ruler, this day will be celebrated from now on--as Captain Marvel’s Deathday!”

Captain Marvel eventually escapes & blows up Sivana’s base. 

[Sidenote: the "happy" ending here involves Cap flying two escaped death row inmates back to prison to be executed the next day. They're all like 'haha, we can't die; Sivana made us immune to electricity.' And Cap very proudly announces: "You're the ones that are wrong! The governor just signed a new law! From now on, this state will use a gas chamber to execute its murderers!" So that's. I guess Captain Marvel is gleefully in support of execution via gas chambers. Which is really. Something. Especially given that it's the 1940s. And, you know. The use of gas chambers in the 1940s. I’m sure that’s not at all intentional, but in retrospect…]

Before flying off, Cap leaves a note for Sivana, which reads (verbatim):

WRONG AGAIN, SIVANA! FEBRUARY 29TH WAS NOT MY DEATHDAY! BUT I AM GOING TO TAKE IT AS MY BIRTHDAY!

CAPT. MARVEL

Comic panel: Sivana reads the above-described note. The caption reads: “Later, when Sivana returns to his ruined laboratory, he finds a note.” Sivana says: “Curses! He’s foiled me! But I’ll get that red bruiser yet!”

Cap just, like. Yoinks the date. 

I just. This is. Just. So funny. 

Then Captain Marvel explains to a racist caricature of a black person (-_-) that he's making Feb. 29th his birthday specifically to make Sivana mad.  

Just. So petty. I love him.

[Sidenote: the racist charicature is “Steamboat Bill,” who was Billy Batson and Captain Marvel’s valet. (Why do they have a valet?). His depiction was intended to be positive, but was racist even for the time. You have to really TRY to be racist by 1940s standards. In 1945, the interracial group Youth Builders, made up of 11,000 schoolchildren, petitioned Fawcett comics to remove him because he was so racist, and they actually did. (Source).]

The story ends with Captain Marvel turning back into Billy Batson the Boy Broadcaster, who has a radio show (again, why?).  Billy thanks  listeners for writing in, and leaves us thusly: 

Comic panel: Billy Batson stands at a microphone labeled ‘Whiz.’ He says: “I guess we’d better leave Captain Marvel to plough through that mountain of mail! He just wants me to thank you for your tremendous response to his plea for a birthday! He really appreciates all your helpful suggestions and hopes you agree with him that Feb. 29 is as good as any other! Besides it comes only once every four years--like this year--and that’ll keep him younger! Or will it?”

So ends Captain Marvel’s quest for a birthday. I am left with one main thought: Billy Batson still doesn’t have a birthday, does he? Because Feb. 29 is Captain Marvel’s birthday, right? Not Billy’s? And he doesn’t have any documentation, anyway. So he STILL CAN’T VOTE.

God, Whiz Comics. If you wanted to do a cool write-in ‘give Cap a birthday’ thing, at least solve the problem he needs the birthday for.

Episode 7 came out on top in this poll, voted number 1 by 45 out of 148 responses. From treasure maps to orange quests, Live Lucius Reactions to Jim’s backstory, this episode tells us a lot about the crew of the Revenge and the dynamics at play.

#2 [TIED] - 1x05 The Best Revenge is Dressing Well  (17.7% | 26 votes) & 1x09 Act of Grace (17.7% | 26 votes)

Episode 5 has so many delightful moments, on board the Revenge and the fancy pants elite ship. The crew of the Revenge standing their ground against Izzy “the Spewer” Hands while Edward gets a glimpse of Stede’s aristocratic life. 

 Episode 9 is full of joy and grief. Izzy’s betrayal forces Edward to choose between his old life as Blackbeard and the new life he could create with Stede. This episode solidifies the crew of the Revenge as a family, fiercely protective over their leader and each other.

#3 - 1x06 The Art of Fuckery (10.9% | 16 votes)

Who doesn’t love a good fuckery? Episode 6 gives us theatrics, character depth, an aborted murder, a tearful bathtub confession, the antics of a mad man, and a thoughtful gift. 

#4 - 1x04 Discomfort in a Married State (9.5% | 14 votes)

Episode 4 shows us how Stede came to captain the Revenge and gives us our first real taste of Ed and Stede together. This episode immediately subverts our expectations, telling us that being ‘Blackbeard’ is perhaps not all it’s cracked up to be.

An ex returns and things get messy. We see bitchy Stede, passive aggressive urinal chats, character death, BOSS STEDE, mutual pining, supportive besties, divorced parents speech, betrayal, a dramatic return AND IT ALL FINISHES WITH A FIGHT SEQUENCE SET TO THE CHAIN?? What more could you ask for? (can you tell this is my favourite episode lol)

#6 - 1x10 Wherever You Go, There You Are (3.4% | 5 votes)

Episode 10 gives us the epic high of “His name is Ed,” and the epic low of “Blackbeard is himself again.” Painful and cathartic, this episode sure leaves us on a hell of a cliffhanger.

#7 - 1x03 The Gentleman Pirate (2.7% | 4 votes)

Episode 3 introduces us to some of the iconic secondary characters, and of course gives us our first proper look at Blackbeard himself. Jim nearly gets away with a daring heist and Stede does his best impression of a real pirate captain as Lucius and Oluwande regret everything.

Hey, I was wondering, who all is on your council?

Would you like to know about my council before coming here, or after? I'll tell you both, oh well.

O5-0 - "The Matriarch" - {She/Her} - Matriarch took my place in her original reality, until our realities collided. She works closely with Ten in the records department, and in the memetics department as well. {@o5-the-lost}

O5-1 - “The Founder” - {He/Him} - You all know enough about me, I don’t need to elaborate here.

O5-2 - "The Gardener” - {She/They} - Two maintains anomalies that are vital to the council, and often takes on a very grandmotherly role. I only wish she would stop trying to mother people on the council.

O5-3 - “The Philosopher Scientist” - {He/Him} - Three is the reason we even have an Ethics Committee to begin with, he’s often the voice of reason so to speak. Catch him when he’s not sleeping or working and he’s always down for a cup of tea.

O5-4 - “The Ambassador” - {He/They} - Ex-Field agent, similar to Six in numerous ways. Four deals with mainly other organizations, such as the GOC. Always down to drink and tell stories, doesn’t like to sit still. {@wandering-overseer}

O5-5 - “Blackbird” - {He/They} - Our Five works with Four usually, the two of them pairing up to do things. They are rather close to each other, how odd. Blackbird is one of the few not afraid to go out in public.

O5-6 - “The Cowboy / The American” - {He/They} - Ex-Field agent, he oversees everything having to deal with the program, and also tends to security. He often keeps to himself, staying in his office. Only ever comes out for meetings or when Eight needs him, bizarre. {@we-couldnt-agree-on-a-color}

O5-7 - “Teeth” - {They/It} - Teeth has been here since the beginning. They deal with other realities, their gods, our gods, everything that most of us couldn’t touch so to speak. They do a lot for our council. They are a good friend. {@asko5-7}

O5-8 - “The Lesser” - {He/Him} - Most of you already know about Eight and his mistake, I don’t feel the need to say more. Thankfully, he hasn’t managed to do anything to that scale again. He tends to do whatever paperwork he can, not truly working in any one department. He does what the rest of us don’t have the time to do, so to speak. {@we-couldnt-agree-on-a-color}

O5-9 - “The Outsider” - {She/They} - Ah… Nine. Energetic to say the least. She helps in the research of anomalies, and promotes it frequently. She’s usually the one that visits sites directly. She tends to act very childish, but don’t let that fool you. She will talk your ear off if you let her. She’s rather close to both Six and Ten. {@ask-o5-9}

O5-10 - “The Archivist” - {She/They} - Ten is a busy woman, rarely coming out of her office. She’s always on time, cold and analytical. She deals with records, record keeping, all that. Though lately she has been speaking to Nine more and more, I wonder. {@we-couldnt-agree-on-a-color}

O5-11 - “The Mailman” - {He/Him} - Eleven is one that has also been here for a while, he oversees the D-Class, completely. All decisions are left up to him regarding the D-Class. Another person that if you manage to catch will tell you a good story.

O5-12 - “The Accountant” - {He/Him} - Twelve took Adams place once he retired, he deals with our finances, makes sure everything is where it’s supposed to be. He’s never made a mistake once in all his time being on the council, though he rarely speaks to anyone outside of meetings.

O5-13 - “Tamlin” - {Any/All} - Tamlin has been with me since day one, they work with Teeth pretty closely dealing with the Gods that won’t stay in their lane. Prior to us gaining our new O5s, he was our tiebreaker. Tamlin is one of the few I would call a good friend. {@bookoftamlin}

O5-14 - "The Tiebreaker" - {He/Him} - One of our newest council members, overseeing quite a few anomalies directly. He works as our tiebreaker, we pull him in when the vote is even. He took Tamlins place. {@earth-b0y}

A Jikook Guide to RunBTS: 66-80

Things in this batch start out a little slow, KM-wise, but seriously pick up around the Toronto episodes. It features the episodes where both RM and Jin ask if JK and JM are a couple, so it includes the giggly hand-push game that helped make me a jikook believer!

Ep 66 "BTS in a Comic Book Cafe Part 1" (Ep: 2 / KM: 1)

The one that I can’t help but feel would be more fun if I was more familiar with the comics involved, but the guys make it cute anyway

3:08 - This is a little hard to see because they use weird angles and cuts, but JK sings a piece of a theme song and JM catches his eye and sings with him.

9:23 - JK leans in over JM's shoulder to see how many people are on the comic book page

2:36 - RM says there are certain people who will struggle with the wake up challenge. JK and JM readily seem to admit it's them. 

6:29 - JM hangs back (to walk with JK?) when the rest of the group starts heading for the Falls.

8:06 - There's a "teleporting" moment where Jin is in between JM and JK, then the camera cuts away, then it comes back and jikook are next to each other. They stay next to each other as they walk on.

9:52 - You can see jikook interacting in the background.

12:25 - JM takes a photo of JK and gets him to giggle, then they huddle to look at the pic.

13:56 - JM puts his arm around JK and takes a selca in the background, causing RM to ask "what, are you a couple or something? Both wearing denim shirts?" He says it fairly seriously for a line that seems like it's supposed to be a joke and they don't laugh or say anything in response - it looks like JM looks away and flips his hair while JK shifts and awkwardly rubs his forehead. You can also see a quiet exchange after between RM and JM where RM says no to something, then nods at JK. Unclear if it's related, but including it just in case. 

15:25 - JK doesnn't try to distract JM while he did the staring contest like he did with Hobi. When Jimin passes, JK is the only one to clap. 

18:04 - Quick moment where you can see JK start to rub the arm of JM's shirt before the camera cuts away.

18:50 - JM laughs and touches JK's chest after JK loses the rocks paper scissor game, too.

19:53 - When the other five walk away and JK is doing something with his mic, we don't see where JM is.

22:02 - JK appears to help JM with something with his camera in the foreground.

BEHIND 4:12 - After JHope scolds JK for letting Suga pour everyone's water, JK goes to pour JM some water, then puts the pitcher down. JM seemingly tries to help him out by saying it's a new trend for the oldest to pour water. 

Ep 70 "BTS in Toronto Part 2" (Ep: 3 / KM: 5)

1:15 - JK slows down to walk side by side with JM.

2:00 - When JK messes up the game he was confident he'd win, JK laughs and playfully shoves at his chest.

7:23 - When JK loses a game and has to buy the others hoodies, JM sneaks a hat into the pile while JK has his back turned. RM rats him out.

8:01 - JM quietly puts the hat back in the pile, then walks over and hugs JK.

8:40 - JK walks over to Jimin to show him something (sunglasses he wanted?).

20:30 - When they're all joking around about whether they can fit four people on a bed, JK moves JM into an L-shape and then lays down nested with him.

BEHIND 0:09 - JK calls out "Jimin-ssi!" and tosses JM that hat he bought him.

4:49 - When the guys are all stretching and JM is in an inconvenient place, JK calls him "Jimin-ssi" again, essentially feels up his calf, and then pushes his upper thigh, all purportedly to get him to move over.

5:28 - JK kneels down behind JM, who's on all fours, and holds his hips to correct his position (I am literally just describing what happens in the clip, but I kind of feel like I'm writing porn, here...). JK then picks Jimin up to move him over a bit. Both giggle as JK starts to stand up and then the camera cuts away.  I can't even begin to think what exercising looks like for these two when there aren't cameras on them...

6:55 - JK reads out the words on the Jimin shirt they're all wearing, which happen to be, "BTS Park Jimin, I love you! I root for you! I'm ARMY!" with a huge grin on his face. Jimin laughs - no one else does - and then jokes that they should wear the shirts back to Korea, prompting JK to tell him "bye!" and wave while giggling. 

7:37 - Jimin shows the parts of the shirt design he would change by poking JK's chest, and then JK and JM share a fairly steamy look until RM interrupts. 

7:52 - JK folds up the shirt so JM's face looks weird and Jimin points to him doing it and laughs. No one else does.  Man, these two were really in their own world this whole Toronto trip, weren't they?

8:02 - JM tries to give JK some advice on the game he's about to play. Before starting, JK starts what seems like it's going to be a silly pose, but ends up being him dragging his fingers down his face, neck, and chest. Sadly for JK, JM wasn't looking. Happily for us, we can look as much as we want. 

8:18 - When JM wins a game, JK claps for him. You can probably guess by now that he's the only one who does. 

10:09 - JM steals a piece of steak, then JK does some cross-cut teleporting to come over and sink down into a chair next to him. JM overdoes making his eyes look big and innocent (perhaps hoping to get caught and scolded?).

10:35 - JM makes Jin move when he takes JM's seat next to JK I feel like just the Behind for this episode needs it's own jikook rating! And most of it is watching JK lead the guys in a workout. If you're going to watch just one Run Behind, consider making it this one!

Ep 71 "BTS in Toronto Part 3" (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)

The Toronto one where the guys have dinner, have breakfast, and play games

14:28 - Maybe nothing, but just to note it - in this and the next shot, you can see JM heading towards where JK is lying back on the couch after losing a game, then there's an abrupt cut and everyone is in a totally different position. 

29:20 - JK tells JM the "super-pancake" he made is for him since he has to do the penalties. 

BEHIND 6:59 - JM says that he thinks JK will want to eat and calls out for him.

Ep 72 "BTS and Mafia" (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)

The one in which we learn that BTS is so terrible at the Mafia game that it almost comes back around to being impressive 

3:10 - When Jin says JK is suspicious because he isn't talking, JM defends him, saying "you know he doesn't talk much." 

8:34 - JM seems to direct his appeal to be spared to JK.

18:16 - JK compliments how well Jimin is doing at the game.

20:13 - After Jimin says he's ARMY, JK asks, "do you like me that much?" Then there's a quick cut and Jin is doing a Jim Halpert face at the camera.

Eps 73-76 “Run BTS Drama Parts 1-4″ (n/a)

The ones where BTS spend four episodes making a “comedic” skit

01:09 - After JK explains that he had a wisdom tooth taken out, Jimin adds the info that they had to take out the whole root.  09:10 - Even though V is the "director" of Jimin's scene, JK speaks up and takes over the role, saying that directors use informal language and repeating twice in informal language "Jimin, let's go!" He continues speaking informally when Jimin messes up and JK scolds him.  11:40 - When it's JK's turn to deliver a line and he gets nervous about remembering it, JM reads it out loud for him. He also says as soon as JK delivers the line that he did the best job and adds to Hobi, "he doesn't get embarassed, I told you."  16:26 - It's a little hard to see for sure, but it looks like Jimin votes for JK when it's time to choose who should be the skit's director. I'm going to be totally honest with you guys - I didn't rewatch these episodes past this. I first saw it months ago and remember being disappointed and fairly bored through most of it past the first half of the first episode - I don't find the skit funny and the behind-the-scenes stuff isn't amusing enough to make a four-part episode about. I’m sure there are others who completely disagree with me and no judgment if you don't share my opinion! But I'm doing this guide for fun and I don't want to spend two hours rewatching them. 

I don't recall a ton of jikook beyond the above - I think there's a moment in part 3 where JK is getting tired and Jimin offers to take over slating for him. So, anyone who is a fan and knows / finds more jikook moments, please let me know and I will update this guide to reflect that. Otherwise, let's happily move along. :)

Ep 77 “Food Guest Part 1″ (Ep: 4 / KM: 5)

The weirdly-named ones that are prob better translated as "food connoisseurs" but the specifics of the foods theme don't really matter because JIKOOK  

07:41 - When Jin says JK and JM will be competing in a palm-push game, JM says he's already lost (because JK is strong).

07:55 - I'm fairly certain that, if you're a jikook-er, you've seen this moment. It's so unabashedly flirty a description can't really do it justice.   JK and JM are supposed to be playing a game where they put their palms together and shove to see who can make the other lose their balance. JM shoves lightly at JK's chest before they even start the game, then both start giggling. Still giggly, JM asks if JK's ready and JK says he is. JM pushes at JK's palms and JK just swings his arms back as they look at each other and smile. Jin interrupts to ask, "are you a dating couple?" (that's the most direct translation - V app translation is "are you two together?"). JK and JM both laugh, the latter so hard that he spins around, thus losing the game. 

17:08 - JK is staring so intently at Jimin on his knees with a blow-pen in his mouth that he completely misses RM trying to give him a high five. Jin has to call for JK to please respond to RM before JK looks away and returns the high five, laughing and apologizing. He looks back immediately after. 

BEHIND 0:58 - JK gives JM a shoulder massage while holding his chest as JM makes satisfied noises. I've seen this clip in compilations before, but hadn't realized it was also from  this episode. It's really the gift that keeps on giving! 

4:29 - Just prior to the above palm-push game, JM reaches out to do something to JK's sleeve (I think?). The camera cuts before we see clearly.  

4:31 - Slightly different angle of JM and JK giggling at the start of the palm-push game.

7:11 - Reveals that RM actually tried to high five JK and was ignored TWICE before Jin called JK's attention away from JM on his knees with a blow-pen in his mouth. 

Ep 78 “Food Guest Part 2″ (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)

15:00 - JK jokingly asks what the answer is and Jimin giggles at him as the on-screen text says, "how adorable." Unsurprisingly, the others are less enamored. (JK's biggest fans = 1. Jimin  2. Run BTS on-screen text writers)

BEHIND 9:56 - JK watches JM dance playfully, then wiggles his own hips, seeming to want JM's attention. Jimin smiles and starts to say something that gets cut off. 

10:03 - JK films JM as JM dances and smiles while looking into the camera. Jimin is doing silly dance, but JK zooms in on his joyful face. He quickly licks his lips as he watches.

The Post-Eurovision ranking and comments from an American that nobody asked for:

1. Switzerland 🇨🇭 Gjon’s Tears - Tout l’univers: I absolutely was enamored by this song, its artistry, and the artist. He can really sing and one of my early favorites from this year. So happy for him to get in the top 3 bc it was well deserved. 100/10

2. Italy 🇮🇹 Måneskin - Zitti e Buoni: Deserved winners. As queer as you can get and I am here for it. Another early favorite of mine constantly fighting with Switzerland for the top spot. 100/10

3. Iceland 🇮🇸 Dadi og Gagnamagnid - 10 Years: A beautiful song dedicated to his wife and deserved Top 5 for sure. Last year’s song would have won hands down so I’m bummed he couldn’t win the first one for Iceland but brilliant song and I hope the group stays together to produce more music. 99/10

4. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Victoria - Growing Up Is Getting Old: Eurovision fandom will forever say Imaginary Friend or Ugly Cry was the better song to send, but I don’t think they would have won the contest either. This year was strong, and I personally think Growing Up was a perfect choice from Victoria. It deserved top 10 so I was pissed that it came 11th on the night and received so few televotes. 97/10

5. Ukraine 🇺🇦 Go_A - SHUM: To all y’all who said this wouldn’t qualify when the new version came out, eat those words hun. This was a masterpiece, and the live performances just elevated it further. Honestly, Kateryna could step on me, and I would let her. Who doesn’t love an ethnic modern fusion rave? 95/10

6. Serbia 🇷🇸 Hurricane - Loco Loco: I honestly have to say when it came out, it was never breaking my top 20, but here we are. This group of gals is amazing. The choreo, hairography, and the still great vocals won my gay ass over. They served and deserved top 10 in my eye. 90/10

7. Greece 🇬🇷 Stefania - Last Dance: Much like Serbia, I kinda dismissed this as a top 10 song at first, but after many listens and then the live shows, it was one of the best songs this year. Last year’s song was nowhere near a qualifier for me, and then I thought they had a good chance of being top 5 this year. Amazing improvement and can’t wait to see what comes next from Stefania. 80/10

8. Malta 🇲🇹 Destiny - Je me casse: Not going to lie, the studio definitely did more for me. It was up with Italy and Switzerland for winner contention until the live shows. Don’t get me wrong, Destiny is still amazing live, and the song is a deserved top 5 song. However, the costume and staging just really didn’t add to the song and I think detracted a bit. Her song last year was also much better in my opinion. 75/10

9. San Marino 🇸🇲 Senhit ft Flo Rida - Adrenalina: Oh boy this was a party, and the fact Flo Rida actually was there made it even better. The staging and costuming was absolutely camp, and I was here for it. This was definitely not underrated by fans beforehand, but the jury and televote were beyond robberies in my opinion. Granted I know the backing vocals were carrying the chorus a lot so in terms of vocals, I can see where this song got dinged, but this should have been San Marino’s best ever result at Eurovision, and it wasn’t so I’m mad. 60/10

10. France 🇫🇷 Barbara Pravi - Voila: The new Edith Piaf and probably one of the most representative of the country’s culture for a song. A definite deserved runner up on the night but for me 10th place. I loved the staging, the costume, the emotions. It was all right for Eurovision and me. 50/10

11. Cyprus 🇨🇾 Elena Tsingarou - El Diablo: Come through Cyprus with another female pop banger. I’d say if the formula ain’t broke don’t fix it, but wasn’t really enough to crack top 10 this year. Another early favorite of mine this year but soon got eclipsed. Still going to be listening to El Diablo for a while. 49/10

12. Russia 🇷🇺 Manizha - Russian Woman: I can’t lie that at first, this song was absolutely trash to me but quickly rose the ranks and became one of my faves. Same thing happened last year with Uno. We also always love a good female empowerment moment with the native language thrown in. Manizha is a girlboss without the gaslighting and a true queen. Deserved top 10 the night of. 40/10

13. Lithuania 🇱🇹 The Roop - Discoteque: An earworm for first listen and was top 10 for a while for me but like Cyprus, lost out to some others. No doubt this is a deserved top 10 the night of. 35/10

14. Croatia 🇭🇷 Albina - Tick Tock: The first song to get me pressed on it’s placement. Deserved to be in the final over both Israel and Norway (please come for me I don’t care). They freakin rocked that stage during the semis and the song is absolutely a bop. Albina deserved better. 30/10

15. Sweden 🇸🇪 Tusse - Voices: A beautiful song by an amazing artist. Sure the lyrics were a bit cliche Eurovision but guess what...it’s Eurovision. I can hear the voices. Keep carrying on Tusse. 25/10

16. Albania 🇦🇱 Anxehla Peristeri - Karma: This song grew on me a lot. I liked it but wasn’t a don’t skip for a while on my playlist. The live performance changed it for me. She slayed and the staging was everything for Miss Thing. Also native language brownie points. 24/10

17. Finland 🇫🇮 Blind Channel - Darkside: Before you come for me for having this at 17th, keep reading. I’m not a big fan of the lyrics but the song is absolutely fantastic. This style of music isn’t something I pull out on a playlist often, but I had my middle fingers up for this one (and pointed at Germany but we’ll discuss later). Deserved top 10 as they rocked it on stage. 20/10

18. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 Jeangu Macrooy - Birth of a New Age: I absolutely do not understand the hate for this song. I was also a huge fan of Grow last year so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised for being generally alone again. The fact it got 0 points in the televote and only 11 in the jury is not surprising but extremely disappointing to me. This song is a masterpiece much like the ones ranked above it. Jeangu, you are amazing and deserved so much better than this. 20/10

19. Belgium 🇧🇪 Hooverphonic - The Wrong Place: Fantastic song but fantastic artists. Always here for a dark pop moment. Gonna go get my own Johnny Cash T-shirt. 15/10

20. Spain 🇪🇸 Blas Cantó - Voy a Quedarme: Such a heartfelt ballad. I enjoyed it quite a bit and don’t understand the hate it has. Didn’t deserve 0 points in the televote. 14/10

21. Denmark 🇩🇰 Fyr og Flamme - Øve Os På Hinanden: Look we all know this song is cheesy but it’s the cheesiest Velveeta queso loco so it’s ranked so high in my opinion. This is a nod to the whacky and weird Eurovision I love. It’s always in my head and I always find myself dancing along. Deserved to be in the final over two of the songs in Semi 2. 13/10

22. Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 Efendi - Mata Hari: As far as the song goes, it’s enjoyable, but the stage show was a hot mess in my opinion. The choreo looked a mess and the different sheer legging configurations on the backup dancers was not the correct fashion choice in my opinion as I was distracted by the thought of why are they all different. Did deserve their spot in the final though. 12/10

23. Moldova 🇲🇩 Natalia Gordienko - Sugar: The studio version of this song is a heavily replayed one on my playlist bc of the drop and dance-ability of the song. However the downfall of the song was it’s live performance. The staging was fine and the choreo was great but those attempted sexy whisper vocals were not the choice to go with. I don’t want to sugar-coat this 😝 so they were terrible. Glad she made it but I felt her position in the final was one of just pure luck. 11/10

24. UK 🇬🇧 James Newman - Embers: The nul points was a huge ass oof. This song isn’t bad but I can see where people didn’t vote for it bc it’s not super memorable in terms of who all was participating this year. I like the song and always sing and dance along. 10/10

25. Israel 🇮🇱 Eden Alene - Set Me Free: This is how to do a revamp and be successful. Eden is a fantastic artist who can clearly sing, but the live performance was not all that sans the whistle tones. Yet the whistle tones aside, the song is lacking a lot. When looking back at the songs available, this one should not have been the selected one. I was always on the fence with this one and still am. 9.5/10

26. Czechia 🇨🇿 Benny Cristo - Omaga: The live definitely hurt this song in the first minute and a half. The second half was absolutely what should have happened in terms of vocals. Still like the song and listen to it often. 9.25/10

27. Ireland 🇮🇪 Leslie Roy - Maps: This song was a victim of a super strong bloodbath and shoddy staging ideas. The song is arresting and a bop. Leslie’s gruff voice mixed with the modernized Irish sounds is a match made. The staging of this song that required Leslie to run along with the beat and the distracting and constantly changing bits of the performance we’re definitely it’s downfall. It didn’t deserve last place in Semi 1 though. 9.25/10

28. Portugal 🇵🇹 The Black Mamba - Love Is On My Side: I am the first to admit that while I don’t like the song, it deserved the final. The staging and atmosphere elevated the song. 9/10

29. Austria 🇦🇹 Vincent Bueno - Amen: In the battle of the Amens, this one wins solely based on the classy and amazing staging. Don’t get me wrong, Slovenia’s was also elevating but this one did it better. 8.5/10

30. Australia 🇦🇺 Montaigne - Technicolor: This song is a fantastic one for studio. The live since the Sydney Mardi Gras performance has been rough and didn’t necessarily improve. I feel bad bc I do really love this song but it definitely didn’t deserve to qualify. This being said, I love Montaigne, and Don’t Break Me was my runner up last year, and I still listen to it as my anthem when I’m feeling down. I wish I could rank this higher but I can’t. 8.5/10

31. Romania 🇷🇴 Roxen - Amnesia: This song is great in the studio but it got old real fast for me and I don’t know why. This mixed with the poor vocals and the bizarre costume:stage combo was really what did this in and got this low in my ranking. 8.25/10

32. Slovenia 🇸🇮 Ana Soklic - Amen: The loser of the Amen battle, but just barely. The song and vocals are better in my opinion but the whole package was just barely edged out in the end. 8/10

33. Latvia 🇱🇻 Samanta Tīna - Moon Is Rising: Look, this song is nowhere near as good as last years. The queeeeeen sashayed away with that annoying trap beat. 8/10

34. North Macedonia 🇲🇰 Vasil - Here I Stand: Leave it to the gays for bringing musical theatre to Eurovision. The song honestly isn’t that special or memorable but he’s higher up bc his stage and voice are amazing. 7/10

35. Norway 🇳🇴 Tix - Fallen Angel: A great message on mental health outside of the song and Tix seems like a quality fella but I do not like the song. I preferred it in Norwegian. And this low ranking is not at all influenced over him beating out Keiino (but maybe a slight bit tho). 5/10

36. Estonia 🇪🇪 Uku Suviste - The Lucky One: While this was 1000% better than last years entry, it still was relatively boring. The stage was equally as boring so sorry Estonia, but you didn’t make the mark. 4.5/10

37. Poland 🇵🇱 Rafael - The Ride: This throwback to the 80s was a bad one. The attempt at a one hit wonder vibe really hurt it along with the artist’s terrible vocals. Also half the time, he was behind the pyro and relying on backup vocals. 4/10

38. Georgia 🇬🇪 Tornike Kipiani - You: You really should not have to wait so long for the more upbeat rock ending of this. If it was that last 30 seconds for 3 minutes, it would be much better. A definite step back from last year. 1/10

39. Germany 🇩🇪 Jendrick - I Don’t Feel Hate: Jendrick might not feel hate but I do bc that is all I feel when this song comes on. 0.5/10

Uku Suviste - “The lucky one”

Semi 2, #02

Going through the motions of 2021′s shitty NF season, it was a given that the critical mass of the “2020 returnees” competing the selections in these would win them hands down. 

So given how much i DISLIKED the offensively boring abomination “What love is”, and how PAINFULLY inevitable Uku’s victory in a decent Eesti Laul (um spoiler for NF corner?) seemed to be, It’s actually a shock I ended up liking Uku? But I do, lol and I’m not apologizing, sorry boos. 

In fact, I was rooting for Uku to win EL as soon as I saw his performance in the semi. “The lucky one”, which suffered from Aggressive Autotune + Forgettable Melody (we need a name for this. I propose Roxen Syndrome?), is legit good live and harps back to the (admittedly better) “Pretty Little Liar”, and that’s good enough for me. 

Of course, I am aware of the obvious ~*SOULLESS HIMBOT FROM THE DREAM FACTORY*~ label attached to this this entry (written by Uku and something called “Sharon Vaughn” are we certain this person isn’t just Kontopoulos in drag?), don’t worry. I rank him twentieth, not seventh. 

Fortunately, Uku is a mandroid from the SAME sweatshop that gave us Lucie Jones a few years back - in other words omfg he’s barely functional. 😍 Droning robot turned incompetent DRAMA KING <333333 The amount of EFFORT that needs to be thrown in to keep a ~pretence of competence~ is the most tangible in the backing vocals, which trail Uku’s like a shadow and STILL his voicecracks come through at key intervals <3

The pathos of Uku throwing in high votes he cannot sing and then his voice breaking over the strain each time, gets me, okay? He doesn’t need a crystal ball to show me, baby it’s clear that you don’t know him :SOB:.  So dramatic, so inept, so unintetionally comedic, so Uku <3

NF Corner - Eesti Laul 2021

Finally a decent Eesti Laul, lol. I wish I could say it was good, but it had one of the weirdest semi split’s I’ve ever seen. EL’s first Semi was without exaggeration the WORST show in the entire season, and the second was a contender for the BEST one across all NFs???? I suppose EXTREME Evil and EXTREME Good balance each other out in blistering adequacy? 

Anyway, I’ll now proceed to ignore Koit and Egert and Karl Killing and Hans and all the other bad (non-Linna/non-Kéa) entries from semi 1, and proceed to an NF Corner composed ENTIRELY of semi 2 songs :-)

Jüri Pootsmann - “Magus Melanhoolia”

It was between Sissi and Jüri for the Token Superfinalist Contender slot on this list, and Jüri is infinitely more notable. Sorry, Sis ur time (to win Eesti Laul?) will come once you figure out to write good music :(

Anyway, what can I even say about Jüri because lmfao what a baffling entry. Registered BARITONE JÜRI POOTSMANN coming back with a an experimental lounge jazz song that is song almost entirely in falsetto. 😍 The camera angles <3 the fact that this already INCREDEBLY short song includes 10 seconds of Jüri standing on the stage looking bored <3 what a fucking baffling entry, I have no opinions, only exclamations of surprise. 

REDEL - “Tarttu”

I HAAAATED “Tarttu” on first listen. 😂😂😂😂 but seriously though, this is downright epic. The UNPLUGGED Meiekündimees MADNESS of it all, now condenced into a equally nonsensical song that is basically like “X is a wooden town but NONE OF THEM ARE AS WOODEN TOWNY AS TARTTU. *incoherent kazoo noises*” 😍😍😍 Once got the chorus stuck in my head at the zoo as I was watching the penguins getting fed and it was one of the most bizarre synesthesic experiences I’ve ever had lmfao <3

Gram-of-Fun - “Lost in a dance”

If you’re wondering what the sort of music I listen to Eurovision is like - this is it. INCREDIBLY good and addictive and EMOTIONALLY tangible 80s New Wave is my fucking jam, can we have entries like this in EVERY selection from here on out? WELL DONE Kristel... on composing this wonderful song, less so on the Kazka-esque vocals that caused it to tragically NQ in the semi. 🙄 Still, BRING THEM BACK (and restrict Kristel to a songwriter only role, plz.)

Gram-of-Fun were my fave, but because they NQ’d somebody else had to fill their shoes in the finale. I’ll now reveal who it was

Kadri Voorand - “Energy”

IT WAS HARD DECIDING BETWEEN SUURED TÜDRÜKUD AND KADRI THOUGH. But given that Charlotte Perelli is guaranteed to appear in Sweden’s NF corner (um is she? :counts on fingers: Clara, Evas, Dotter... ehh sure I’m committed now I guess), it would be best NOT to post Dagmar & Kaire as they fucking clown her lol <3 But their song WAS pretty antiquated schlager...

Kadri otoh... absolutely breaks all records for me by delivering a unicorn: an entertaining stripped-down piano ballad. For the most part because she has incredible emotional delivery that serves personality on a fucking pyrotechnical level, like onn-stop “Loudmouthed Oaf Energy” in the form of a introspective jazz ballad <3 Can you imagine Estonia actually picking this? They could have come left-handside. 

But will Uku do well? :o

Predicted Journey - Estonia

He won’t come top 10, if that’s what you mean by “well”.😂 If you mean “qualify for the Grand Final” then... potentially? Semi 2 is less of a crapshoot than the first semifinal however. At this stage, it’s pretty much “okay, so these twelve acts can qualify... but which ten will?”.

Fortunately for Uku, he is one of aforementionned twelve possible qualifiers. (the others are: san marino, czech rep, greece, moldova, iceland, serbia, albania, bulgaria, finland, switzerland and denmark). UNfortunately for Uku, he’s one of the candidates for the two NQ slots inside that group of twelve.

The problem with Estonia is that their entry is a televote-friendly ballad, stuck in a really televote-UNfriendly slot (#02), in a semi where the jury vote will very likely put them outside the top 10. If we add in a dark stage and Uku’s shaky vocals, they don’t look particularly secure. 

However, I also think Estonia can qualify relatively easily because “televote-friendly ballad” is a unique niche inside that semi; the other ballads (Switzerland is NOT a ballad), won’t be getting many votes and Uku’s appeal as a handsome man with a dramatic song will make him stand out in spite of his spot in the running order, as LONG AS his vocal delivery (or that of the prerecorded backing vocals) remains adequate enough. If not, he’ll be swiftly forgotten and NQ.

Another thing that can cause Uku to qualify is if at least two others of the twelve underwhelm (my money for that would be on Albania, Denmark, San Marino and/or Czech Rep), making Uku the lucky one as he’ll ascend in the ensuing powercreep.

At any rate, it’s really difficult to gauge how well Uku would do since I haven’t really thought about the other BL qualifiers’ odds enough. His televote should be strong enough to avoid bottom 3, I think, and I think it’s safe to say he won’t come top five. Between those values, pffffew, who can possibly tell? I’m not burning my fingers on that.

Maybe I'm thinking too much about the Persona games today, but are there any characters that you would pair any tarot arcana with?

What a fun question! I think that tarot cards have like, the coolest aesthetic ever. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about tarot arcana, so I went on a deep dive into Wikipedia to try to understand it. I’ll apologize in advance that A. E. Waith’s definitions for these cards feel very heteronormative. I’m working with the traditional definitions, but I try to make them work for a modern story.

Here are the character-card combinations I came up with:

0 – The Fool: Folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment. [If the card is] Reversed: Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.

Joe Tazuna

Joe Tazuna is our gaudy, “extravagant” fool! The fool represents the “everyman,” and is often the “protagonist of the story” in Major Arcana. Joe, who is good-natured and clumsy, has the type of personality you’d expect to see in a story’s protagonist. Ironically, he is one of the first to die. His “absence” is deeply felt by our real protagonist, Sara, who must go on the “Fool’s Journey” “through the great mysteries of life and the main human archetypes” without him.

1 – The Magician: Skill, diplomacy, address, subtlety, pain, loss, disaster, snares of enemies; self-confidence, will; [it signifies] the Querent, if male. Reversed: Physician, mental disease, disgrace, disquiet.

Reko Yabusame

Reko is our “skilled,” “confident,” strong-willed musician magician! (And she often uses masculine pronouns, so why not give her a masculine card?) Reko has also suffered through “pain, loss, and disaster,” which has shaped her current mature, kind personality. And in the past, she was a “disgraced” rebellious rock star who burned through bands.

2 – The High Priestess: Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; the woman who interests the Querent, if male; the Querent herself, if female; silence, tenacity; mystery, wisdom, science. Reversed: Passion, moral or physical ardor, conceit, surface knowledge.

Tia Safalin and Maple

This card made me think of both villainous ladies. Tia Safalin has knowledge of science, while Maple seems to also have mysterious wisdom about human nature and the future.

3 – The Empress: Fruitfulness, action, initiative, length of days; the unknown, clandestine; also difficulty, doubt, ignorance. Reversed: Light, truth, the unraveling of involved matters, public rejoicings; according to another reading, vacillation.

Sara Chidouin

The Empress can only be our Sara! The girl who takes “initiative” and becomes the group’s leader! She seeks to bring “light” and “truth” to discussions, and she “unravels mysteries.” And yet, she also suffers from “doubt” in herself, and “ignorance” of her surroundings.

4 – The Emperor: Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction also authority and will. Reversed: Benevolence, compassion, credit; also confusion to enemies, obstruction, immaturity.

Mr. Chidouin

We don’t know much about Mr. Chidouin, and I do not trust him one bit. However, he seemed to be a suitable companion to his “Empress” daughter. Kai Satou certainly thought he was “a great” and “benevolent” person, though he has an “immature” way of speaking.

5 – The Hierophant: Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude; by another account, mercy, and goodness; inspiration; the man to whom the Querent has recourse. Reversed: Society, good understanding, concord, over kindness, weakness.

Kai Satou

The words “servitude” and “captivity” suit our homemaker Kai, who always lived in service to others—either Asu-Naro or the Chidouins. Kai is a “good” man, but he is also shown to be one of the “weakest” participants since he dies early on.

6 – The Lovers: Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. Reversed: Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds.

Nao Egokoro

I know that Nao’s story doesn’t have much romance in it, but I liked the duality of “trials overcome” combined with “failure” and “foolish designs” for our poor, brave Nao. She is a girl who grew a lot, and her heart was overflowing with love for her new friends, but in the end she was doomed to failure with the Sacrifice Card.

7 – The Chariot: Succour, providence; also war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, trouble. Reversed: Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat.

Alice Yabusame

So many aggressive words in that description made me think of our “Murderer,” Alice! Alice was “triumphant” in his last fight with Original Sou, but he can be “defeated” by Rio Ranger.

8 or 11 – Justice: Equity, rightness, probity, executive; triumph of the deserving side in law. Reversed: Law in all its departments, legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity.

Keiji

Of course I had to give “Justice” to everyone’s favorite self-proclaimed policeman, Keiji! Keiji lays down the law in our group, and don’t we all hope he’ll favor the “deserving side” instead of showing “excessive severity.”

9 – The Hermit: Prudence, circumspection; also and especially treason, dissimulation, roguery, corruption. Reversed: Concealment, disguise, policy fear, unreasoned caution.

Rio Ranger

“The Hermit” feels like a strange card to give to our childish doll villain, but I liked the descriptive words associated with “corruption” and “policy fear.” Rio Ranger commits “treason” by directly killing a participant, and he also “conceals and disguises” himself with masks and other people’s clothes.

10 – Wheel of Fortune: Destiny, fortune, success, elevation, luck, felicity. Reversed: Increase, abundance, superfluity.

Sue Miley

Sue Miley is the villain who introduces us to our destiny with the Practice Vote and the First Main Game. She sadistically wishes everyone “luck.”

8 or 11 – Strength: Power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity; also complete success and honours. Reversed: Despotism, abuse of power, weakness, discord, sometimes even disgrace.

Q-Taro

Q-Taro suits “strength” perfectly! His character arc is all about learning what true strength is. He begins the game from a place of cowardice and selfishness, but he becomes courageous and honorable.

12 – The Hanged Man: Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy. Reversed: Selfishness, the crowd, body politic.

Shin Tsukimi

How could my favorite doomed antagonist have any other card but “The Hanged Man”? Shin is cursed from the beginning of the game with a “prophecy” that he will die. He relies on “intuition” more often than logic and he can be very “selfish,” but he is also “wise” enough to want to protect the most vulnerable among them, leading to his “sacrifice.”

13 – Death: End, mortality, destruction, corruption; also, for a man, the loss of a benefactor; for a woman, many contrarieties; for a maid, failure of marriage projects. Reversed: Inertia, sleep, lethargy, petrifaction, somnambulism; hope destroyed.

I liked the card “death” for our main dummy Ranmaru, who has died and transformed. The words associated with “sleep” and “lethargy” also reminded me of his final moments, where he commented that death felt like going to sleep.

14 – Temperance: Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation. Reversed: Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, sometimes even the priest who will marry Querent; also disunion, unfortunate combinations, competing interests.

Kazumi Mishima

“Temperance” sounded like a good card for a wise character who lives in “moderation.” Mishima was cursed with an “unfortunate combination” of votes in the Practice Vote.

15 – The Devil: Ravage, violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality; that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil. Reversed: Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness.

Original Sou Hiyori

“The Devil” is the most perfect card for my favorite villain! He is “violent” and goes to “extraordinary efforts” to manipulate the participants, but he has also suffered a “fatality.” I thought the phrase “predestined but is not for this reason evil” was especially intriguing for Original Sou, since I often wonder how much free will he could exercise within Asu-Naro.

16 – The Tower: Misery, distress, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, deception, ruin. It is a card in particular of unforeseen catastrophe. Reversed: Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.

Gashu Satou

Gashu brings a terrible “unforeseen catastrophe” in the Second Main Game, when he would rather kill himself then give our characters a chance to escape! He is undoubtedly the best character for “The Tower.”

17 – The Star: Loss, theft, privation, abandonment; another reading says--hope bright prospects, Reversed: Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.

Kanna Kizuchi

Kanna has suffered “loss” and she may be “abandoned” by the people she loves. However, her survival also brings “hope” and “bright prospects” in spite of the Death Game’s cruelty.

18 – The Moon: Hidden enemies, danger, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, occult forces, error. Reversed: Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.

The Dummies

The words related to “hidden enemies” in the “darkness” reminded me of our dummies, who are tasked with killing the human participants.

19 – The Sun: This card is generally considered positive. It is said to reflect happiness and contentment, vitality, self-confidence and success. Sometimes referred to as the best card in Tarot, it represents good things and positive outcomes to current struggles.

Gin Ibushi

Gin Ibushi is a light in our lives who brings Sara emotional comfort! In spite of having no tokens to defend himself in trades, nobody sent him the Sacrifice Card, which is a wonderful thing.

20 – Judgment: Judgement, Rebirth, Inner-calling, Absolution, Karma, Causality, Second chance

The Man from the Memorandum

The Man from the Memorandum, the winner of the Previous Death Game, seems to be the Mastermind of a new Death Game and is calling for a “second chance” for the High School Girl to survive. He pronounces judgment on every victim.

(It’s entirely possible that the Man from the Memorandum is Mr. Chidouin himself, which would make my distinguishing between them silly in hindsight! For now, I’ll assume they’re different people.)

21 – The World: Assured success, recompense, voyage, route, emigration, flight, change of place. Reversed: Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence.

The 17-Year-Old School Girl

Is 15.5% enough to “assure the success” of the High School Girl? Is that enough to “change her place” from dying in the First Death Game? Or will she be “permanently” dead? The entire “world” of the Death Game seems to hinge on this critical role!

Due to the lack of Big Hero 6 content, I’m going to be commenting on articles. The latest on is from Screen Rant comparing Big Hero 6 and the Incredibles to see which is the better superhero film. I am a fan of both of these movies and Incredibles is in my top 10 ever, yet I’m the one with a BH6 blog so it kind of evens out. Here’s a link to the full article if you want to follow along:

The first reason they give the Incredibles is

It focuses on how there are a vast number of superheroes and past and lore put into the Incredibles. The BH6 Series built off of the movie and added more heroes and villains but it’s still overall inspired by that culture, comic books exist, video games exist, these are very much nerds making themselves superheroes versus the just plain existence so I’ll agree with this point. 1/0

If we’re specifically talking about the first movies and not including the BH6 Series or Incredibles 2, then yes I do agree but I really did like the action in Incredibles 2. I do feel like the action is more grounded than Big Hero 6 so if you’re looking for “extravagant” then I would vote BH6, overall for me it’s a tie. 2/1

No question, I love the score. Big Hero 6 has some good pieces but Incredibles nails it all. 3/1

Baymax is a fair argument. While the Incredibles have ‘various’ abilities, Baymax basically has them all or at least the ability to handle them. Not to mention, he’s a healer. Imagine the benefits Baymax would have towards our life. I look at him as a symbol of mental health and have used him to various advantages before and I know that I’m not the only one. 3/2

This one is just stupid because its very much on a technicality, it took 14 years for Incredibles 2 to come out and it has only been 6 with Big Hero 6, not to mention that Big Hero 6 has a tv series which still builds off of it, based off of runtime alone, Big Hero 6 has more content and I don’t even consider the fact that anything having a sequel counts as a point, it matters what content is in that sequel. There are plenty of movies that bombed financially and didn’t get a sequel that I find the content to be great and plenty of ones that had multiple sequels and I liked nothing of it. So, I don’t count this as a point. 3/2

This is where it gets heated. This is very much a matter of opinion as well as how many twist villains it takes for you to get annoyed. I like Callaghan and I like Syndrome but they definitely had more layering to Syndrome. If they had included Callaghan’s past like they had originally then I would reconsider so I’m actually going to give the point to Incredibles but I wouldn’t argue if you said Callaghan. 4/2

This is contradictive of what they said of Baymax. Dash is my favorite of the Incredibles and while people had more time to like those characters, I don’t completely disagree. I actually hear the most critiques about this point alone when it comes to Big Hero 6 so I’m not surprised. Screenrant’s point is that Hiro and Baymax feel like the mains and the others feel like supporting characters while all the members of the Incredibles had an integral role, I agree with this but most of the members of Big Hero 6 shot up in my rankings after the series started, not the movie, because I think the series gave them more time to develop, so honestly I want to give this one a tie. 5/3

When I think of the Incredibles, I don’t think of a tearjerker, I think of empowerment, so it’s more about what ‘you’ want out of a ‘superhero’ movie, I personally don’t see this as a real point even though I technically agree with it so point to BH6. 5/4

Two more, this one seems like an endgame type point. Screenrant brings up what I said earlier about how all the members of the Incredibles had an integral role and felt like they had their own story. I kind of have to agree, BH6 mainly follows a revenge plot which isn’t exactly new so point to Incredibles. 6/4

Before I actually talk about powers, I want to talk about designs.

I have to give props to how Incredibles designed their characters to match that of their powers using simple shapes, you can even see it even more so in the art and end credits. But actual powers, there aren’t any in Big Hero 6, it’s mainly technology, which is what most people call “The Iron Man/Batman theory” so I will give it to Big Hero 6 because it is still fresh but I still appreciate Incredibles’s powers despite being familiar, I think it’s what you do with those powers that makes a difference. And Big Hero 6 doesn’t really rely on the “To be a superhero, to not be a superhero, will society accept it?” 6/5

They give 5 points each so there’s no clear end victor but like I said Incredibles is in my top 10 but Big Hero 6 is no stranger to me and I feel like I probably fanboy over it more.

In light of this post, about different types of ways you may feel about your favourite hockey players, getting an awful lot more notes than expected, I thought it would be fun to have a more detailed look into what kind of responses people were giving! I accidentally deleted the damn thing a few months ago and it took me a while to find it again, but on the plus side it accrued a lot more notes during that time - I have responses from 150 people, covering 119 different hockeys! This is pretty long, so all the good stuff is below the cut :)

So, as I said, there were responses from 150 different people (thank you all) - 119 individual names were mentioned for a total of 429 answers, accounting for 25 NHL teams. I’m going to link the Google Sheet at the end of the post, but first I thought I’d go through some of it :)

There is obviously going to be some bias towards the teams I am about on my blog since that’s where the post originated from, but with that many responses, the results are pretty varied. Anyway,

First are some of the most common players assigned to option one, which, as per the post, was “he’s perfect and i will not hear otherwise. i look at him like he hung the moon, because quite frankly, he probably did. he is the lord’s perfect creation and i would happily die defending his honor.” 

As you can see Jamie Benn is the pretty clear winner, and very satisfyingly so, as he has the same number of votes as his jersey number. From what I’ve seen, Stars fans are very passionate about their captain and I love that! I don’t think there’s really any surprise appearances on here, although I wasn’t expecting Crosby’s name to crop up this much, maybe that’s just because I’m not necessarily a Pens fan. These are just the most common answers. People’s opinions were far more varied on this than the other option; on a quick count, I tallied 75 individual players being named for this one! As a result, most players that were mentioned in this category only appeared once or twice, like Ben Bishop or Seth Jones (both good choices). There does appear to be a considerable bias towards Canadians, with (if I’m right) 10 appearing on this graph. The rest of the players are European, so not much love for the Americans…interesting.

Category 2: “this little bastard creature. how dare he. how dare he make me love him. he’s a gremlin that’s crawled up from the depths of hell and i hate him with all my heart even though i love him. he’s the literal worst man alive.”

 People were much more in agreement on this option - even as I was typing up the answers it was clear that TK and Seguin were almost unanimous across hockeyblr. It doesn’t seem to matter which team you support, you probably hold a little bit of rage for one of them anyway. 

I think Nolan Patrick making a pretty even appearance on both lists is interesting, and I can’t say that EJ or Jimmy Vesey were names I expected to see mentioned here. Matthew Tkachuk’s Friendship Tour runs rife even on Tumblr, it would appear. Most people probably would have predicted a lot of these names for this one.

(This post is from a fair few months ago, and from a quick scroll through the tags it does appear that most mentions of AMatthews are from before the allegations surfaced in September. Just something to note.)

This is where things get interesting - I noticed some players were appearing numerous times for both categories, so I thought I’d pick out some of the most common ones, and see how opinions were split. Of the 38 times Travis Konecny was mentioned, only 2 people thought he belonged to category 1 (represented by the green bar), so I hope those people are out there living their truths. Seguin showed a similar pattern, whilst Barzal, Patrick, and Tom Wilson had opinions split close to 50/50. Surprisingly, Marchand was deemed more “perfect” than “gremlin” but that may be the result of this post being circulated a fair amount among Bruins blogs. That being said, and we’ll get onto it in a second, it does appear that hockey fans on Tumblr were fairly evenly represented in this, so maybe not.

This is a summary of how the number of players mentioned were distributed by team. There’s some more info in the Google Sheet about how many players represented each team - e.g. the Capitals, despite only making up 7% of answers, had the most players mentioned at 14! This chart is interesting, and in my experience a reasonable portrayal of hockeyblr, although a few teams are probably a little under-represented. That being said, it is probably more reflective of hockeyblr on the whole rather than on a team-by-team basis. Players who tend to be pretty popular, or at least subversive, regardless of your allegiance - Konecny, Seguin, Marner - have definitely influenced this.

The Hurricanes, Red Wings, Kings, and Lighting have been omitted from the above chart as their players were only named once or twice, and so amounted to 0% in the grand scheme of things. No players from Ducks, Oilers, Panthers, Canadiens, Senators, and Winnipeg were mentioned at all. The Ducks and Senators weren’t really too shocking, but I did expect to see a player or two from the others in there. I would assume this is a result of those fanbases not being all that big on here.

A Jikook Guide to RunBTS: 20-29

I’ll be totally honest here - I was kind of worried when I took this on that looking closely would end up convincing me that I was just seeing things through shipper goggles. And, sure, there are moments that have had their significance overplayed because all of the guys are touchy. But overall, I've ended up being even more convinced there's at the very least something unique about this relationship!

FYI - I started putting these notes together a few months ago, so my memory about certain episodes has grown a little hazy. In the interest of not needing to rewatch these episodes for a third time, I’ve decided that if I don’t remember much about the episode, it must not have been that memorable, and that’s reflected in the (totally subjective) rating.

They're all staring at Jimin when he dances while getting soaked (because how could you not?), but JK's face at 24:16 after he gives JM a once-over is pretty great. And I think it's JK who yells "so hot!" at 24:23. He's also the only one still clapping at 24:43.

15:19 - Jimin comments that JK will like the laser part of the course. 17:38 - JK taps JM on the shoulder to indicate something. 24:30 - JM proudly tells JK that he heard he scored the highest (even though that is a. not true and b. would be bad for Jimin's team). BEHIND 0:15 - Jimin reaches over to pat JK's stomach even though Jin is the one who messed up.

Ep 27 "Welcome to Your First MT Part 1" (Ep: 4 / KM: 3)

The ones where BTS play games, sing karaoke, and have a BBQ

6:22 - Jimin points out that they shouldn't make things harder for JK's team and imitates JK's confused big eyes. 7:48 - Jimin is playing the nonsensical answers game and is doing well until they ask what JK's favorite color is and Jimin immediately says yellow. Then, looks over at JK with an embarrassed smile. 13:55 - Jimin loses again with JK involved and, after, keeps looking at him and sings something I don't recognize.  19:22 - When Jimin has to do the nonsense game again, JK cheers him on with a "Jimin fighting!" even though they're on opposing teams. 20:50 - When Jimin has to drink lemon juice, JK volunteers that Jimin will be good at that since he likes sour things. He then repeats that fact another two times.  24:30 - Not super shippy, but the sound effect JK makes for Jimin's die toss is pretty great. 24:44 - When JK argues that Jimin's team should get less time, Jimin looks at him and acts cute so JK laughs and stops arguing. 28:18 - When Jimin gets an answer wrong in a funny way, JK says "this is is how he makes the show awesome."  BEHIND 0:58 - Jimin complains that the shirts with JK's face on them make Jungkook look "too cute."

Ep 28 "Welcome to Your First MT Part 2" (Ep: 4 / KM: 1)

JK swats at JM with the prop rose at 17:45 as part of this.  21:19 - While the guys are getting changed, Jimin calls everyone's attention to how he's dressed JK and gets them to compliment how good it looks. Then, V comments that it's the boyfriend look and Jimin says he wanted it to look great.  23:21 - JK trails his eyes up Jimin's body as JM poses. 23:27 - This starts the sequence of JK modeling Jimin's clothes, which involves a lot of laughing and looks plus JK imitating Jimin's hair sweep. At 23:54, JM calls JK Jungkook-ssi and says he looks even better than he thought. JK immediately stops posing and gets shy and earnest as he asks "really?" and says thank you. Then he takes JM's hand and holds it a few seconds and his entire face lights up.  (This isn't a moment I'd given a lot of thought to before, but watching it now, I actually think I'd put it on my "moments that highlight how differently JM and JK interact with each other than with anyone else" list) 29:10 - While doing his model walk, JK imitates JM's hair sweep again and then does a piece of JM's choreo from "Save Me." JM cracks up the whole time and they do a bro-hug when JK is done. 33:00 JM and JK crack up together in the middle of the final poses.  BEHIND 5:29 - As they get changed, JM and JK joke about the fit of the pants JM is trying on. 6:58 - JM and JK decide that JK should change into the outfit JM originally picked out. JK does and then starts imitating JM, which makes JM laugh and playfully smack him. They keep talking and at 7:40 JM briefly touches JM's back. 9:10 - J-Hope says that Jimin said before the episode that he wanted to dress JK. JM corrects him that he said Tae.
