I went to see a local middle school production of Newsies Jr. and it was super cute and here are my...

SHOW NOTES

The production started with the choir singing "Home on the Range" a capella. 💯

It was very fun and moving to see child characters played by real kids. Jack was a little scrappy guy (David, Crutchie and Katherine were all taller). Racetrack had very pink cheeks. Albert was wearing an enormously oversized vest and shirt with rolled up pants. Pigtails was the dirtiest newsie. Buttons had the most emphatic New York accent.

David and Les showed up to sell in matching argyle sweater vests.

Pulitzer who was the only character not played by a middle schooler for some reason (he looked like a weird high schooler least or maybe he was in his 20s). He was a head taller than Hanna, Seitz and Bunsen, who were a comedy trio behind him, constantly cowering but then egging each other on.

Crutchie was so excited to teach Les to sell and looked on with pride as Les scammed that lady.

The kid playing Snyder was doing some kind of strangled, raspy villain voice that was hilarious and scary by turns.

At Medda's, David introduced himself as "Davey" and then looked so annoyed at himself.

Morris kept trying to give various newsies papes, even after they said they were striking.

Racetrack went around kicking the bundles of papes off the stage. He was absolutely that kid who always slides on his belly to the front of the pic, cheesing.

Katherine was a big girl with glasses and know-it-all energy and she had objectively the best voice. She killed Watch What Happens!

In the fight, Crutchie got knocked to the ground while three uniformed cops plus Snyder crowded around, kicking him. People in the audience were audibly upset. ACAB!

Jack picked up Crutchie's abandoned crutch with the strike banner still attached and he had it on the fire escape during Santa Fe. He sang the line "dumb crip's just too damn slow." This was the only time anyone said the c-slur in the whole play. He was so sad and he got angrier and angrier as he sang but that last note was beautiful.

They played "Money Money Money" by ABBA during the intermission, and I ran into Seitz in the ladies restroom. She was about 4'11" tall and asked me if I was enjoying the show. Of course!

Crutchie tried to get to his feet during his song, but he couldn't do it.

Bunsen made a big deal about concealing Katherine with his body and then dramatically revealing her.

In his office, Pulitzer said to Jack, "I'll see to it your pockets are filled with enough cash to take you to ... where was it again?" And then both Delancey brothers, who had gnarly bruises in their faces from the fight, sang out "Santa Feeeee!"

The Brooklyn newsies all had red bandanas.

After they made up after the rally, David initiated a spit shake with Jack, but Jack really horked up a loogie and David super regretted it.

David got right in Pulitzer's face to tell him circulation was down and Pultizer got mad and shoved him backward and David just grinned.

Crutchie and Jack hugged and then hugged again.

Pulitzer got booed during the bows!

The crew was mostly very queer high school students.

Some of this stuff might be in the Newsies Jr. script and not unique to this production, but it was all delightful.

Who are you?

Hosts Shannon and G are both relapsed 2000s twihards from the DC-Maryland-Virginia area of the US who found their way back to Twilight fandom just in time for the Renaissance™. They met through fandom in 2019 and have been friends ever since!

sorry this is in my main notes about episode one but i need to get it out now.

there’s something about the parallels to the first scenes of both seasons. like we start with Charlie, he goes to school, he’s texting the guy he likes, and he goes to find him only to see he isn’t there.

In season one, Ben just tells him they will meet up another time, and he’s alone.

In season 2, Nick is right behind him.

There’s just something about that little detail that makes me feel things.

Also can we talk about the song choices? I might be thinking too much into this but something about the songs makes me think about how much happier Charlie really is, and how they portray that through music is wonderful.

For example, in season one the opening song has the lyrics “I wish i thought that i was pretty so that i could turn you on” as well as “i’ll go anywhere you want to go….why don’t you swap me for your shadow” basically, the song is about how someone so desperately want love and attention from another, at least from my perspective.

but in season 2, we get these lyrics: “I don’t really care if it nearly kills me, i’d give you the world if you asked me too,” which shows how much Charlie is obsessed with Nick, how much he cares about him. and the constant texting shows Nick cares back, which is something we don’t get with Ben. (fuck u ben)

alone, those lyrics could be anything. you could take them the same way. but matched with the imagery, you can just see how much happier Charlie is, and the beat and lyrics of the song really help express that.

maybe that’s just me, but that’s how i interpreted it. either way, the comparison of them really tugs at the heartstrings, doesn’t it?

anyway that’s my ramble about that! i’ll be back with more notes later!!!

Arthur had his first conformation event today! Just a little fun match for puppies only.

He did really well and I'm so proud of him. ❤️ His little nubbin was wagging the whole time, and he wasn't shy or nervous at all!

My handling was terrible and I was going around the ring too fast, and then doing a bad job stacking him. We need to work on stacking, and not sitting in the ring! I've tried so hard not to have an auto-sit, but he defaults to it all the time. Ahh. Oh well, he's a baby. He did really awesome for a baby!

We were like the only ones who didn't get to at least go in the group ring, which was kind of a shame. Surprisingly there was actually another English Cocker, a much older puppy handled by his experienced breeder. A pretty dog, but ... Personally I think Arthur is the nicer dog shhhhh. Puppies are awkward to judge and very subjective though. This other puppy was older, and groomed properly. He was very very nervous, but had more training. He had the more petite look that is quite popular, while I prefer "traditional" ECs with more substance, like Arthur's lines. Oh well, maybe we'll get a ribbon next time lol.

I think it was a nice, short, positive experience for the little baby man, though. If I can keep the enthusiasm and confidence, and the handling and grooming improves, he'll be the best dog in the breed ring!

When you first start out in the world of webcomics, you might have ideas about how you want your launch and subsequent updates to go. You might look at the popular webcomics you follow, see their engagement, comments, and even fandoms and think to yourself “I want that too”, only to realize that your expectations don’t quite match what you’re receiving. The results can be disappointment, resentment and burn-out, so today we want to discuss how we manage our own expectations and find healthy ways to cope with setbacks!

21:10 When you are preparing to launch your comic, it is important to build up hype for you and your audience. How do you create a good balance between this and the expectations it creates, and the reality that a comic might need time to reel in an audience? 

Reframe and rebalance. Webcomics are a marathon, not a race. You made the webcomic because YOU loved the story and wanted to share it, and it's okay if not everyone feels the same way about an update. Try to take a break from the grind when you feel yourself getting overwhelmed or disappointed. Remember the reason you started a webcomic and try to get back to that!

37:35 Sometimes we see creators turn bitter when their works don’t gather the attention they have hoped for, and even burn out while working on their webcomic. How do you personally avoid this?

Be genuine about your interactions. Don't treat everyone like a customer and don't treat people as investments that are supposed to create returns for you. Focus on things you can control. If something doesn't seem to be working, try something new!

The host is at the end of his rope and desperate to keep his job (I'm kinda wondering what was going on behind the scenes here)

Pig foot drives him to look back into the archives despite the scar he received "last time" (god this is fic bait. I might need to write something for eventually. Just have Dib give this man ptsd)

HC: MM Host tried to sue for his injuries but the same network owns both the stations MM and Membrane's show run on and they persuaded him to settle out of court. He only got his bills covered cause the rest of that money could go in REAL science.

There is so much in the Dib archives. It's bigger then the room they started in.

Host immediately see the potential in the video. (Senpai noticed acknowledged you Dib!)

Host is VERY quick to make his thoughts about Dib known despite trying to stay professional.

HC: Dib totally sent in that clip of himself as a toddler. Probably years ago with some sort of fucking fan mail. "I wanna be like you when I grow up! This show is my favorite! Praise me! I'm so young and I've been doing this so long. Pretty cool, right? I know." (Verm's on the money about the Zim and the Tallest parallels to Dib and Host)

Baby Gaz only gets frustated when the blocks read aliens. So I'm gonna assume Membrane was already making comments about it at this point.

Dib's so full of himself in his retelling. He's trying to sound so serious and professional/smart yet humble as he narrates into it. Full blown boasting. He's failing the assignment.

Whether his hero complex is fogging his recollection of things and he geniunely believes this is how it when down or he's embellishing is an interesting question. (Dib is kinda one of my blindspots) It's likely a bit of both.

I do believe he views Gaz as a sidekick. I wonder if he actually views Gaz as a scared little girl despite how terrifying she. It's actually pretty likely that he doesn't really know her at all despite living with her and being family. It's a very Membrane thing. Could be part of the reason Gaz is how she is. She has no reason to trust Dib if he's too busy with his paranormal shit to even know her by now.

He's obviously making Zim out to be a bigger threat. I do think he's purposely embellishing here. Mostly about Zim shooting at him.

Emphasizing things through redundent rephrasing. (don't look at me)

Really getting into the straight up lies now. "But I was too much for him." You were not.

He's so fucking sure of himself. Nothing else has worked Dib. Stop trying to be cool infront of your idol it's not gonna do anything.

Dib's day has been ruined.

Zim's so quick to look into the camera as he acts. He flinches at alien, has his tiny tyraid and then snapping quickly back to acting.

I reiterate. Dib's day has been ruined. The sad look he gives to host, when he's talking to Zim.

It's interesting that when he says he's playing "like a human earth larva" he's up in the tree with Gir. Were you just fucking around trying to keep the robot distracted Zim? Or was that the actors just getting ready for the next shoot?

We know Zim's bullshitting to some degree. Very clearly about the lunch monzies. But I do think on some level he just sees Dib's bullshit as bullying.

The little cowaring and sobbing, love Zim's lies here. He's absolutely playing the victim for sympathy cause it's a strategy that normally works for him (on earth), but damn if Host wasn't the perfect target for it. Like the man clearly views Dib as a menace. It wouldn't take alot to sway him.

Day further ruined. Dad's not even here and he's still killing your dreams, Dib. (How'd you get the world's most famous scientist as your expert, huh, Host?) I bet Membrane fucking jumped on the oppurtiny to debunk something on Dib's favorite show. He loves to be seen. He's correcting "misinformation" with REAL science. And his son is going to be watching! Even better. I bet he didn't even know Dib was on the show.

"He told me my daddy is a yeti." Starts to breakdown. "My daddy's not a yeti! HE'S NOT A YEEETTTI!!!" Those were some strong thumps. How much did Dib harass this kid?

"Well, Dib," distain clear in his voice.

So full of himself. Also repetition.

Zim was so ready to eat that thing.

I think Host's fear of Dib extended to Gaz, but he's more open about it cause she's more outwardly aggressive. It's not that he got shit thrown at his head. But the fact he's fully expecting to get hurt again while filming this episode and he feels like he's being forced to do this.

Also the budget's getting pretty low, huh? Hosts typically aren't camera men.

Gaz being very clear about how she views most people. I do think the view that she's smarter then everyone else is also a Membrane trait. And she maybe right in the show, but she also just sees nothing but stupidity in everyone else.

"Restrain him!" AAAAAGGHHHAAAAH!!!! It almost sounds like he's being punched.

Stacy: WITNESS. GIR isn't even bothering with a disguise. Zim called him in and he's just like Ookie Dookie! Waves at camera.

"LET HER TALK! Can't you see she's upset." Zim quiets without a fuss.

Is- is that a zombie in the squirrel suit?

"I feel bad for the ugly green kid," you were primed to sir. You were primed to. But like Zim did make the best case here. In isolation perhaps Dib's would be as strong, but with his mischaracterization of Gaz his story takes a major hit. (Dib can't make a compelling case to save his life. He was only staying to cool at the begin because of who he was talking to. He didn't want to come off badly. If he took that adittude into more of his arguement I think more people would be willing to hear him out at the very least.)

"But not an alien." I absolutely love the delivery of that line. I love it!

Tiny yeeee! and he walks off with gir.

HC: Host is the creator of Mysterious Mysteries and has basically bankrupted himself keeping it a float. The man is deep in debt and the network has him by the balls.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I feel like Zim was giving Host a similiar amount of respect to what he gives Ms. Bitters.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. From the delivery of the lines, to the staging of the story, to host's slow crumbling until he just breakdown on set and of course an appearance from the Professor.
