Virgil would also totally be a robot/android thing but kinda in a Frankenstein way where he’s built from all kinds of different parts that don’t necessarily match but still get the job done (you know like the robot version of patchwork like his hoodie)

Roman (cause he was the mechanic/coder in the last one) takes a look at him and is absolutely APPALLED at the state virgil is in because Virgil these parts are completely out of date how are you even still functioning??? So he takes it upon himself to update Virgil’s equipment and Virgil can’t help but squirm as he feels Roman’s hands caress his inner wires. Roman replaces some of his parts with newer (more sensitive) models until he’s in perfect shape (while also adding some of his own coding for good measure ;))

i like the idea of virgil growing attached to his mix-matched features, and upon romans initial horrified state, virgil thinks theyre solely due to the fact that his shiny, titanium arm doesn't match with his rose-gold coloured leg, or that one of his bionic eyes has a completely different iris colour than the other!

but, roman just expresses that half of virgils body is breaking down, and the other half uses completely outdated equipment! no wonder his servers are so often overwhelmed! he doesnt have the necessary hardware to quickly process and respond to important situations, which causes him to overheat, and frankly romans surprised he hasn't completely broken down due to the stress his overworked fans put his body under! ("what do you MEAN you don't have fans? how does your body cope with the overheating?" "i shut down." "of course you shut down. why wouldnt you shut down? are you sure you werent solely made for the theatrics????")

so, roman insists on not only updating his hardware, but a lot of his structure itself. he promises not to tamper with virgils hard-drive, and to keep his body rather similar in shape, but carefully pulls him apart bit by bit to fix him up.

and virgil doesnt expect just how good it feels

roman carefully starts with his body. arm by arm and leg by leg, trying to preserve as much as the scrap as possible and then reforming it with smoother, higher-functioning, and more sensitive limbs, which he attaches one by one to allow virgil to get used to them on their own without thrusting multiple new limbs on him without warning. and virgil is genuinely delighted to see that roman utilized the specific materials that his old limbs were made of, even if they were unorthodox, tough to work with, or obnoxiously coloured.

and then roman moves onto his wiring.

his big fingers are so gentle when snipping unneeded wires, and they brush over them so sweetly, urging him to relax when he feels virgils body start to get hot. roman doesn't want to him to damage his internal hardware, afterall.

but replacing the wires and rerouting the cords is the easy part.

changing out virgils charging ports is the hard part.

virgils incredibly flustered when it comes to giving roman access to the little port on his lower back, and keeps flinching away when roman tries to inspect it, making little squeaks or shuddering when roman runs his hand over the small hole, or being more embarrassingly vocal when roman has to dig into his back panel to study it more closely. and of course, roman says that he needs to observe virgil during the charging process to guarantee the replaced port and new charger - both of which were hand-crafted by him - are compatible, leaving virgil to hide his face as he's plugged in as he feels each bit of energy that rushes into him to an incredibly sensitive degree.

but, since he did such a good job, virgil completely trusts roman when roman asks if he can add a bit to virgils coding, even promising virgil can review the code after to decide what bits he wants to keep and what he doesnt. only for virgil's newfound fans to kick into full blast when he sees all the extra inappropriate coding roman suggests, though he accepts all of it without complaint, much to romans delight

I did not romance Lucanis this game, because Emmrich stole my heart the moment he started flirting back.

So I don't know if it's De Riva specific or story matter, I don't know if it's because I had Lucanis on the strongest bond level, but Rook and him, even as platonic friends, felt incredibly close.

I mean. Apparently Lucanis personal quest, especially when Spite calls us for help inside Lucanis psyche, is the same whether you have been flirting or not with him, so regardless of what happens, Spite loves Rook fiercely, romantic or not...

But the amount of time I saw Lucanis and Rook going cvery close to a security cling to each other, running up to each other to see if they're fine, giving long looks, supporting - and Lucanis speeches are telling- they felt like they were each other's best friend.

Now perhaps I was crush-blinded (Emmrich x Rook x Lucanis is my OT3) but it feels like it's not like this with the others. Even Emmrich seemed less handsy with Rook, and yet the sheer number of times he gives us cute "my love" "my dear" "my treasure" and it's worse in French because it's outdated expressions sometimes and it rolls on his tongue like the sweetest dessert, and yet, Rook and Lucanis felt like they were like soul close.

It makes SENSE considering what happens - to Spite, Rook opens doors, not close them, and the quest in Lucanis mind tells us everything we need to know. Also, Lucanis comments that Rook is his (first or second?) Friend, because Illario was first, and about how he doesnt havr a lot of people in his life

I kept flirting until the very fatal choice because I didn't know who I'd end up with (made a big save just before, just so I could go back there once I finished, to try Lucanis romance) and just picked one of the "not committed to the romance" when speaking to him first because committing to Emmrich, and - and in BG3 that would have mattered but in Veilguard I'm not sure it's "past nearly romance mattered", but Lucanis hesitated when I went to see him later, Emmrich romanced, saying: "I feel like I haven't thanked you enough" (so, did the favorite dessert but it did not go into romance?)

So yeah. Lucanis and Rook bond is incredibly strong regardless, or at least ib my game it was. And I love it.

Not only does this woman, who is nearly 20 years old, have a disgusting and dehumanising fetish for trans men's bodies, but she also maintains an incredibly inappropriate behavior.

CONTENT WARNING FOR DESCRIPTIONS OF TRANSPHOBIA, SEXISM, HOMOPHOBIA, BIPHOBIA, RAPE APOLOGISM, FETISHIZATION, AND INAPPROPRIATE CONDUCT WITH A MINOR

As a transmasculine person myself, I can't help but say that some of Marie's content has traumatized me. The way she treats trans bodies is extremely invalidating and disrespectful. In any of her drawings involving a character she headcanons as a trans guy, she will do everything she can to make them discernable from cis men. The cis characters will have bodies more similar to their actual character models, and will usually have a simple body shape. However, LITERALLY EVERY TRANS MAN she draws has an exaggerated hourglass figure, and wears either skirts/dresses constantly or skintight pants that indicate what genitals they have. This is a textbook example of an offensive charicature. She obsesses over the genitalia and gender assigned at birth of trans men, and focuses on that rather than their actual genders. That is, of course, unless she's priding herself on drawing "trans representation" and will never just call the characters men, but always trans men, to separate our existence from cis men as if we aren't "real men". This is more obvious in her pornographic drawings, in which she constantly refers to trans men as "naughty trans boys" or "beautiful trans boyfriends" that cis men are "lucky to have". In her ask blog titled askthe4friends, she takes this weird sexual dymorphism to another level, by making the characters she headcanons as trans men to be the only male characters who wear skirts and dresses, and in her words "still act like girls", which is implying that trans men are actually girls pretending to be men, but are still girls. She uses the distinction of activities cis men and trans men do constantly by stating that the cis men like video games whilst exclusively the trans men like baking, which really seems like an outdated, partriachal, sense of gender roles but used to differentiate between cis men and trans men, which turns the already sexist trope of women being in the kitchen into something transphobic that invalidates the gender of trans men in the process. She also headcanons the cis men attracted to trans men as bisexual, because they are attracted to men, but only the "girly ones". This is invalidating, transphobic, and biphobic as it implies that sexuality is based on genitals and not gender. She has been called out by one anon for constantly drawing trans men extremely feminine, but never drawing cis men that way, to which Marie responded that she does this because "some men have rights to that stuff" which first of all, doesnt make sense or answer the question, and second of all, doesn't reflect the various experiences transmasculine people have with femininity compared to cis people and instead takes advantage of trans men who dare to reclaim feminine expression and turns it into something for her own personal consumption. When the anon mentioned how she always exaggerates their curves, Marie admitted to doing this because she believes that trans men will always have different bodies than cis men because of their gender assigned at birth, but she played it off as if this were a good thing.

In posts she made involving pregnancy and a fanchild, she initially portrayed the character she headcanons as trans to be the mother, and the only father is the cis man. She later changed it so the trans man is also listed as a father, but she is so insistent about focusing on his anatomy for her fetish that she had to also add "(birth giver)", which doesn't need to be stated, as all it does is remind us that she constantly has trans men's reproductive systems in mind for her own enjoyment. She also stated that pregnancy would obviously happen because it's a relationship between a trans man and a cis man, which completely erases the complicated relationship trans men have with pregnancy, how dangerous it is to assume that just because a few trans men carry their pregnancies to term trans men in general are somehow okay with giving birth, the fact that there are several other ways to have children that don't involve trans men having to stop taking testosterone for 9 months, and that if unplanned, pregnancies can be extremely traumatizing as it would wither result in abortion/miscarriage, or halting hormone replacement therapy. All this woman cares about is that trans men are usually born with uteri, and that cis men can impregnate them. All this woman cares about is the genitalia trans men are born with, to which she assumes that gay trans men must be just like her, a cishet woman, then, which ignores the fact that many trans men have different genitalia, and that trans men don't have to be in relationships with cis men.

On her nsfw accounts, she puts a direct focus on trans men's genitals, often drawing closeups of their hairless, dainty bodies being exclusively dominated by cis men. She has constantly been insistent on other artists making only one man in a gay relationship trans, and that the trans man MUST be submissive to the cis man. There's at least one drawing on there where she literally labels a trans man as a cis man's "pet", and another in which a cis man calls a trans man a slut, which is both incredibly dehumanizing and reinforcing of cis entitlement to trans bodies. I have counted, and there are at least 4 separate posts on tumblr alone in which Marie has glorified/pretended to get nosebleeds over the idea of cis men literally raping trans men, focusing on trans men's genitals once again, and stating that the cis man "just can't help it" and that the trans man "starts to/secretly enjoys it". This practically encourages and glorifies brutal violence against trans people, is a classic case of rape apologism, and literally fetishizes a hate crime. She has encouraged others to create content of the same caliber, and I'm honestly shocked that people never stopped her in her tracks. I'm even more shocked that her posts are still getting likes and reblogs, some of which from children.

I messaged Marie on anon a few months ago, before I had seen the posts glorifying rape, thinking that if she simply wasn't aware of the harm she's doing, I could tell her about her mistakes and she would change for the better. However, she responded by not even letting the world see my grievances with her by not publishing my messages, and instead acted like I had made her stay up all night crying. Still, I assumed that she might be a good person who's just a little lost, so I thanked her for "listening" to me and told her how she could fix her mistakes. I told her that despite meeting the definition of fetishization, she wasn't the worst I had seen. I regret saying this, because I was quickly proven wrong.

Marie claimed that she had no idea what she was doing. Marie was lying. Almost immediately after I sent her the first set of anonymous messages, she made an account on instagram, where she posted some of her graphic nsfw content, one of which depicted a trans man with his genitals splayed out in the center of the image, and saying "put your big fat c*** in my p****!!!!!!"... This was right after I had asked her to stop obsessing over trans men's genitals... She eventually made this account private, alongside her twitter a few months later. Her most recent drawing that I have seen of either of the spies was of a trans white spy, in which she drew him in a shirt that read "MEGA MILK", stating that although he doesn't have breasts anymore.. she did it because "you know..." and then she didn't explain anything else, basically implying that she knows that what she's doing doesn't make sense and is invalidating but she's going to continue her horrible actions. Marie has stopped posting her svs fanart on tumblr after I sent her those anonymous messages, likely afraid that more people will call her out on her actions. Instead, she now lurks and interacts with people on tumblr through replies and asks. As of recently, I noticed that she is now taking advantage of a child on this site who makes nsfw content, which is illegal, just so someone else who is young enough to not know any better can feed into her transphobic fantasy without feeling guilty herself. But here's the problem: Marie IS guilty. She has treated trans people horribly, and she is fully aware of it. I have been nothing but polite to her on anon, and I never mentioned anything about her on my blog until recently. But ever since I made my first post, she has actively avoided my blog, liking almost every new post in the spy vs spy tag other than mine for a while. I'm almost glad that she doesn't interact with me, but I can't help but wonder if she's ignoring my posts because I mentioned in my very first one that I am gay and transgender, that I headcanon BOTH of the spies as such as well, and that homophobes and transphobes shouldn't interact with me.

I guess that's the one thing a trans guy has told her that she's actually listened to. Please avoid, or if you can, deplatform this disgusting person. She may claim to be an "ally", but the only things she has done involving lgbtq people is fetishize us to no end, ignore us, and reblog those posts that say "reblog if you're not homophobic!!!11!1". She claims that she can't be misinformed about trans people and that she can't be doing anything wrong because she "has trans friends", but that is no excuse for a cis person to talk over trans people and sexually exploit gender noncomforming/feminine trans mlm. I wouldn't be upset if this was simply just a gender noncomforming trans man projecting onto a fictional character. The problem is that this is not the case at all. Marie is an openly cishet woman (She has in some of her bios that she is heterosexual and "loves gay shit"), her headcanon is fueled by her thought process that trans men= vaginas, and she fetishizes the entire existence of gender noncomforming trans men. She portrays cis men as the "dominant men" in mlm relationships and trans men as the "submissive women", stating multiple times that she's only comfortable with trans men being "ukes" and cis men being the "semes". She makes sexual content of trans men being dominated by cis men to project a cisgender, heterosexual, patriachal lens onto trans men and mlm. This content has been accessible and has influenced the way young, impressionable teens see gay trans men. She is a threat to the safety of the fandom space, to the safety of trans people, and to the safety of minors.

This post has been sitting in my drafts for nearly two months now. I've been hestitant to make anything along the lines of a callout post due to the implications of what may follow. I want to be relatively professional and mature, and the level of responsibility that comes with it involves deciding when it's appropriate to speak up. I've been terrified that people would come after me for talking publicly about it, but it's come to my attention that people need to know that this person has been doing horrible things, and people need to avoid her. I don't want anyone else to be negatively impacted by her behavior online like I and multiple other trans people have been. I don't want her content to be used to groom young people, especially young trans people, into thinking that this behavior is in any way acceptable.

The thing is that treatment will typically resolve whatever underlying issues there are, regardless of the diagnosis. Treatment in therapy is never about a cure, it's about alleviating symptoms and more importantly, it's the best diagnostic toolset in the book. If you come in with suspicion of BPD, and you begin treatment for it, one of three things will happen - you'll get better, you'll stay static, or you'll get worse. The latter is incredibly, incredibly rare, (and for that reason highly diagnostic unto itself in some situations). If you improve right away, it doesn't necessarily mean you have BPD (often the opposite actually) but the underlying issues are being addressed. You Are improving. You Are feeling better. You didnt waste anyone's time and your diagnosus hardly matters because whatever your issues are, this therapy is working.

Put it this way. Say you fell down stairs (as I did not long ago) and you injured your knee. You go to a doctor, who throws out some prospective causes, tells you to go home and put ice on it and see if it gets better.

Now, does it matter all that significantly that the doctor didnt give you a perfect diagnosis if the proposed treatment works? If you ice your knee and it stops hurting, how much do you really NEED to know which muscle or ligament or connective tissue was damaged? Obviously if your symptoms come back, or if the treatment is ineffective, then more research will be done to diagnose what could be a long term issue, but if it doesn't then there's not much need, from the doctors perspective especially, to continue searching for answers.

Mental health, whether we like it or not, functions on the same principles (or should imo) as any other practiced medicine. It doesnt matter if you get treated for BPD when all you have is a combination of neuridivergency and depression if the treatment works. And there's absolutely no shame to be had in guessing and turning out wrong. Doctors do that all the time in physiological medicine. I was told initially that I might have some form of spina bifida when I was 15, but moved before radiographs could be taken. Now at 23 I have had those images taken and concluded that I just have very tight tendons. It happens.

And just because your diagnosis, or lack thereof, is different from what you expect doesnt make it better or worse. My tendons cause me unimaginable pain and pinch my sciatic nerve all the time, rendering me unable to walk. The pain and disability are still real, still present, and still radically affect life. The initial treatment would be the same for both situations - physical therapy to improve motility. The only difference is that I no longer have to face a lifetime on SDI, which is a good thing.

Mental health is the same way. So what if your diagnosis isn't what you thought. There's no Olympic medal for Scariest Name or Most Suffering. If treatment works, it works. If it doesn't, then something else must be the problem and move on to that.

Also, to end the mini rant, the Psychology field is PACKED with SJW's at the University level. Absolutely stuffed to the ears, which is why the field has such a low graduation rate. That being said, one or two completely judgmental or outdated assholes will slip through now and then. It's also worth noting that the APA is 50 years out of date on 40% of its subjects, give or take. Most of the DSM criteria for a bunch of things haven't truly been updated since the 80's at least because the board that decided these things are the same people from back then. Until an entirely new generation of reviewers and doctorates infiltrates the APA there's always going to be bumps on the road when it comes to good therapy. Many many therapists fortunately are not strictly "by the book" people and have a functioning sense of critical thought, so are actually able to help patients who come in with all sorts of problems. Others only got through school by merit and technicality. Just like medical school throws out entitled nasty doctors, psychology sometimes throws out bigots that are only JUST able to pass their psych training and are lazy about it once they graduate.

The good news is that just like you can "fire" your doctor and go see someone else, you can also fire your therapist. In fact it's highly, highly recommended. Mental health is a fragile and extremely individual thing, and the doctors involved need to be capable of treating YOU. If they aren't, hopefully they'll admit it, but if not then you have to let them go. To do otherwise is to put yourself in harm's way. You wouldn't tolerate a surgeon who insisted on amputating the wrong limb, would you?

an ex-friend of mine, then a psychology major and by now probably a full psychologist, once lectured me on how horrible and bad it was that i told her “i probably have some sort of neurodivergency”, and that if i were her patient she would never give me a diagnosis because “you aren’t like this now, but i know that if you get a diagnosis you’ll use it as an excuse to start treating people badly. that’s just how mentally ill people are.”

school psychologist asked me how i was feeling about my trauma situation and i told him i thought my friends would leave me. instead of addressing the issue he said that that no i didn’t, that i was lying, that i had searched “bpd symptoms” online and now i was faking symptoms because i wanted to have bpd, that he shouldn’t have told me he suspected i had a personality disorder because now look what was happening. no, i didn’t search bpd symptoms online. yes, my friends left me, it was a completely founded belief and not a symptom, let alone a faked symptom.

so the next time you hear someone saying they’re “anti self-diagnosis” i want you to understand what they’re saying. what they’re saying is:

- i don’t want people to be aware of their own symptoms

- i don’t think my patients should have access to any information that doesn’t come from me

- i don’t think neurodivergent people should learn how to cope with their symptoms and live “normal” lives

- i think neurodivergent people should be denied a diagnosis because the moment they get one they will become evil and dangerous

- i don’t think people who don’t look like a stereotype could possibly be neurodivergent, even if they have all the symptoms, so i think they are faking it for attention and should be denied treatment

anyway, the thing is... a lot of people seem to think that if a book is considered a "classic" it must be good. even timelessly good, universally good. and that if you struggle with a text, if you don't understand it, or if you hate it, then it must somehow be your fault. but that's wrong. classic ≠ popular. this attitude is incredibly common though and it doesnt help that even many teachers misunderstand why they teach what they teach.

motivation is essential. try to be aware of your personal goals and prepare yourself accordingly. some people read jane austen for the romance and just love the fact that the stories are so long-winded. others read jane austen DESPITE her wordiness and just want to enjoy the poetic language. others again dont care about either but want to learn more about regency society.

4. annotate the book yourself. jot down definitions of unknown words, random thoughts, questions you ask yourself while reading. scribble hearts in the margins or smiley/frowny faces or just the occasional question mark. make it your own.

5. work your way up. start small and allow yourself to practice. for older stuff, victorian literature is a great starting point imo bc both the language and the cultural context are very similar to that of today. plus many victorian classics were written for popular audiences.

6. for motivation: set realistic goals for yourself (e.g. 20 minutes/pages a day) or read with someone else. the social aspect helps a lot so dont be afraid to start a small book club. thats essentially what academics do. literature is often taught in seminars rather than lectures. talking to other people about whatever you're reading is immensely helpful for both your understanding of the text and your motivation to keep going.

7. dont be afraid to put it down and read something else instead.

I wish everyone would admit that classic literature is inherently difficult to read, and that you shouldn’t feel stupid if you don’t “get it”. Especially the dark academia/ classic lit fandoms and stuff. Like unless you have the vocabulary and pop culture knowledge of an 18th century nobleman, it’s going to be a tough read. It’ll take you longer to read; you’re not stupid if you’ve spent several months on a single book! And you don’t have to enjoy everything. It’s okay if you got bored after one chapter of Wuthering Heights, and couldn’t be bothered to read the rest. It’s okay if you want to read your favourite kids book for the 10th time instead. You’re not stupid. No piece of literature is inherently better, more “important”, more “meaningful”, or more “intellectual” than another. First and foremost, read what brings you joy.

* I’m really not good at point and click advantures, so i dunno if my opinion is very valuable, but this one just seems... not good, gameplay-wise. The sections are all different lengths and difficulty levels in each chapter, and not in a fitting way. Like so far the only one where I had to combine two items was the first chapter, it took me ages to figure out what the game wanted me to do with the bedsheets. And then the second chapter had like zero point and click at all, you just had to find one toy brick and stick it to block one hole, then it was just story cutscenes. And now in chapter three we have a suddenly huge snowfield to explore with your painfully slow walk speed, yet there’s only like one thing you need to find and just... I’m getting surprisingly anxious worrying if I missed something cos i only found that one thing! There was a whole section i didnt explore cos i didnt realise you couldnt go back outside after you managed to open the door. And what was with the misdirect of Alice saying ‘maybe i can reach this window if i have something to stand on’ and then instead she just shot off the lock on the door? Does that mean there were multiple solutions to this puzzle and thats why the place was so huge?

* Anyway, the story continues to be intriguingly good! I continue to be really engaged in poor Alice’s journey through this post apocolyptic snow world with her lil son, and I continue to be really worried what happened to that son, since this is a flashback and Alice met Richard alone... Also I like the continuity that Barney is continuing to talk about the close call they had last time with a monsterous bastard who kidnapped them. This poor lil 7 year old is struggling to keep up and struggling to keep smiling so his mum won’t be sad, and its just SO COLD and he doesnt understand why they left ‘the safe house’ because he doesnt understand they were prisoners there. And god, its so sad cos you can understand how Alice might be getting frustrated with him, and you can understand that she KNOWS she’s being irrational, but she’s just so scared that she sucks at keeping up a brave face for her kid. But I think she’s doing a great job, she’s way more of a badass survivor than anyone else would have been in this situation! And Barney is being incredibly good too, he’s being really patient and obedient to his mum and he’s a really considerate kid, he gave his mum his toy car cos she was getting sad remembering when her husband was alive and they used to ‘go on adventures’. (”But we’re on an adventure now, mummy!”)

* And MAN I am REALLY WORRIED for this poor kid, he’s been showing signs of getting sick as they were travelling the snowy wasteland and I hope they can at least get a break now they’ve found this abandoned house to sleep in. BUT NOPE! Alice finds mysterious scary notes with some sort of log of... people...? It definately doesnt feel like just someone recording visitors or survivors they met, its got a weird sort of... priorities, to what was written down. ‘Fem. caucasian. 20s. Compliant. 65lbs.’ And then what struck me as especially weird was that someone would classify a kid as ‘Female. age 7. 21 lbs’ instead of like.. actually writing that it was a kid. This is someone seeing these people as.. merchandise. You never really get an answer in this chapter but I think it’s someone who was offering survivors fake shelter and then cannibalising them T_T The chapter just ends with Alice finding an ambiguously scary room with a bloodstain, but this is the only shelter they have, so all she can do is lock the door again so her kid doesn’t see, and barricade the front door in case this cannibal cult comes back for their home base... *shudder*

* But also seriously, why did I collect like five other red herring letters as well as the cannibal one? And a rusty saw and ammo for a different gun. Was that JUST red herrings or did I miss an optional puzzle?

* Its actually a weird relief to get back out of the flashback and back to our slightly-less-horrible horrible situation in present times. Sure, Alice and Richard are locked in prison, but in this apocolyptic scenario its a relief to be somewhere where you get daily food and working electricity. There’s even a tv that only sometimes doesnt work! And they have each other, and they’re building up a nice friendship now, and it just feels quite optimistic. Richard’s even getting a bit of a crush on Alice, even though the attempts at flirting between the two of them are failing horribly cos they’re both total goobers. i dunno, if they do get together in the end, I totally wouldnt mind it! I dont think its really necessary though.

* Aww but the more we learn about everyone’s backstory, the more I really wanna hug em! We still dont know very much about Richard, but we’ve learned now that he had an ‘average childhood’, at least, by his definition. And he lived in some sort of small country town, and he joined the army in order to see more of the world. But it went really badly and he got sent to prison for rebelling against a superior officer who made a clearly immoral order. JUSTICE FOR RICHARD, GRARR!! And then Alice continues to be way more well developed and interesting, even though I do still feel sympathetic for richard, yknow. Just a lil frustrated that it took us so long to even hear that lil bit about him, when he’s supposed to be the ‘main character’. Seriously he seems like just a framing device for us to talk to alice and see her flashbacks! Anyway, now we’ve learned that Alice didn’t have much of a childhood, because she was hospitalized for a long time. And she talks about how she felt like a burden and felt suicidal and how she never even got to make any friends til she grew up and became a lil more healthy, and then she sorta ended up in an unplanned pregnancy with the first man she ever dated, and never had a chance to pursue her dream career and just... wow Alice dear god, someone up there in the heavens hates you! God, I hope this game has an actual happy ending, please! And also it makes me EVEN MORE WORRIED about what happened to her kid, now im starting to worry if maybe he inherited her childhood disease and like.. it only first started manifesting during the apocolypse and she wasnt able to find a doctor in time.. or something... MAN THIS GAME IS GIVING ME A MILLION WAYS THIS SWEET BOY COULD DIE

Richard and Alice do nothing but have an awkward fetch quest to find enough stuff to make a pole to reach the termostat outside the jail cell, and then after all that it ends up failing anyway. I guess at least we do get a bit of character development cos we get to see them both frustrated and having a bit of an argument, then making up again, and etc. But meh, bring on the next actual plot flashback!

I got to hear the backstory of how the dad died, so i THINk that was the right choice? It seems he died back when barney was too young to even really know him. But then it was the start of government aid breaking down and society crumbling, and a gang stole the last food ration pack from them and the dad thought he could reason with them. And its just so sad cos Alice is thinking of all the ways it could have been prevented! ‘We’ve gotten used to surviving with less now, what if we’d just let that food go? we could have lasted’ And what if they’d shot first and asked questions later, instead of trying to be diplomatic. And apparantly back then things were a little less abd so there actually was a trader they could have got more food from, but resources were limited so they decided it wasnt worth it at the time. And the after the gang killed the dad and some of the other leaders of the shelter group, it seems like things just collapsed in a power struggle and thats how Alice ended up alone... And you just have this sad sidequest to gather flowers for his grave and then Barney is all ‘i dont really know him and i dont understand so i feel bad that i cant cry’ and then he’s asking if dead people can hear you from down in the ground. And I picked being honest again, and Alice didnt say yes or no, she just admitted that nobody really knows what happens after you die, and you have to choose what you want to believe. So Barney chooses to try and tell his dad about how they’re having a good day playing in the snow on this adventure, and Alice tells him that Barney’s grown up so big and strong, and Barney says ‘Yeah! Strong like a lion! Or you, daddy!’ and BUNNI’S SOUL SHATTERS INTO A MILLION PIECES

This is because you know they’re open to linking to other sites within your space. By using the Link Intersect tool you can see who links to other online marketing articles or other online marketing sites.

Then from there what you’ll want to do is hit up those sites and ask them, ‘hey you got a detailed post that you cover A, B, and C’ that your competition may not. Ask them to link to you as well.  Don’t just do that for your main post on that subject but also do it in regards to your secondary and third pages that are also around that same topic.

Tip 5 – Promote Your Articles on the Social Web

The fifth tip I have for you is to promote your articles on the social web. From Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn, you’ve heard this before. You want to promote your main articles as well as your sub-articles that are also around that topic. But what most people don’t tell you when it comes to social promotions is that when you share an article on Twitter or Facebook, most of your fans or friends aren’t going to see it. You don’t want to just share it once. You want to share it four or five times over the next six months.

By doing this you’re going to continue to get more eyeballs and more shares indirectly. Some of those people may link to the article or leave a comment. This will help with the engagement and better user metrics and that should help with overall rankings in the long run.

Tip 6 – No One Likes Outdated Content

The last tip I have for you is no one likes outdated content. When you publish content it gets outdated over time. It’s natural even if you write about tools and tips. For example, if I wrote about Vine, which is a company that Twitter bought, it’s outdated. It doesn’t exist anymore. Twitter shut it down. I’d have to update that content and talk about a different tool out there, maybe Instagram.

The point I’m trying to make is whatever you write on is going to get outdated. That’s okay and that’s natural. However, once a year consider updating your main pieces of content because that’ll help them all rank higher.

XB2178 - Specialism

Goals for specialism

My aim within the industry is to become a narrative designer, a role that combines both gameplay and storytelling, as such I felt a fitting specialist project would be to create my own dialogue system as well as a story, characters and dialogue to go with it, which I felt worked well towards my aim, I was also planning on doing all the modelling for the assignment as well.

For the first part of my specialism I focused on just getting the framework for the dialogue system working, a challenge in itself given the sparse resources on the subject of dialogue based systems, the few that are out there are limited and outdated and inevitably lead to more problems down the road anyway.

However by the end of the first semester I had a solid, if not a little janky, working base to build upon going into my second part of the project, where my goal was to improve upon the system as well as write a story and dialogue with about seven characters to talk to.

Of course not everything goes to plan, in fact it rarely goes to plan, as such there were numerous changes throughout the project for a number of reasons, some good and some bad.

Modelling

One of the first major aspects of my plan that I changed was myself doing all of the modeling for environmental assets and for all of the characters as well, I instead opted to use premade assets and to do none of the modelling myself, I changed this for a number of reasons but the most prominent would have to be that it was for the most part irrelevant to what I want to specialise in, nameley narrative and gameplay. I felt this would have distracted from the more important areas of my project and at the same time they didn’t really push me towards my own goals. This combined with me being somewhat burnt out when it comes to modeling for sci-fi environments ultimately led to me deciding against doing the modeling for the level. This would also free me up to work harder on both the dialogue system and actual dialogue for the characters, as well as giving me additional time to bug fix and refine the game rather than rushing out a project that does everything in a medicor fashion.

In the end I feel this was definitely the right call for the project as to try and do all the modelling would have only led to lesser results on all fronts

All environment art assets were acquired from the unreal marketplace, all character models and animations were acquired from Mixamo

Amount of characters

So when planning out the story and characters for my game I had planned on their being more characters than ended up being, I envisioned about eight characters in the game that the player could speak to and gain information from, as the story is a murder investigation I was going to have four suspects and four information givers, however I found that too many characters would be too confusing to keep track of and two of the information givers were rather meaningless to the story. Also wary of the games length becoming a tad overlong I decided the best course of action would be to merge some of the characters together, this kept the story a little simpler and a little more concise while also making the four main suspects seem more intertwined a little bit.

The end result is five characters in total, one information giver/ tutorial and then the four suspects whom I merged most of the information giver dialogue into.

Objective Marker

One thing that I decided to add as oppose to remove was objective markers that point the player towards the characters they can talk to as I felt it would be too easy for player to miss speaking to a character by walking past them and just not noticing them, the objective markers ensure they notice all the characters.

They objective marker works similarly to the game Dishonored, were when facing the marker it appears more prominent but when facing away from the marker it scrolls around the edge of the screen, it also tells the player the distance between them and the character they wish to speak to.

It was actually rather simple to create in the end as the instructions for how to make it were easily findable online.  

Journal

A feature I was originally planning on having a journal list or evidence list of sorts that would provide the player a way to see the info they’ve already gathered, I managed to implement this in a basic form but I ultimately removed this for a few reasons. It would make the investigation too easy and I wanted to strike a middle ground in terms of difficulty and I wouldn’t have enough time to properly balance it, the second reason I removed it was because I wanted players to pay attention to the dialogue and not just skip through only to read the journal list at the end, I felt this was the best way to encourage players paying attention. And finally the last reason I had it removed was because of me having lowered the number of npcs in the game which made the story and characters easier to remember, had I kept the original eight characters that I had planned then I would have probably kept this feature too but with the lowered amount it works fine without.

Dialogue System

So obviously a major part of my project is the dialogue system so I felt it extremely important to get this right especially.  

I already had the framework from the first part of my project but their was still a lot to improve on, one of the first things I aimed to improve was the possible length of a conversation sentence, in the original dialogue system for the first part of specialism it was restricted to one sentence replies from the npcs which didn’t create for very fluid dialogue and made it extremely hard for me to get an adequate amount of information across, so I saw this as the first thing to improve, I blueprinted a system that let npc’s have continued sentences which allowed me convey more information to the player and extend conversations naturally where they would occur which gave me a lot more freedom when it come to writing the dialogue.

For much of the rest of the project, the improvements I made to the dialogue system were to make it easier to use on my end, making it faster and more efficient for me implement my own dialogue and sorting the blueprints into reusable functions that allowed me to streamline the process, while it still wasn’t great or even that practical to work with, it was still a lot better than before the second semester.

Finally I improved the UI of the dialogue system, where it had previously been using a weapon wheel for its dialogue wheel, I changed it to better suit the six option limit I intended for the dialogue. I also added an overlay so that the text stood out against the background and option boxes with lines drawn to the wheel to make it clear which option the player is picking.

The Dialogue

The dialogue was surprisingly difficult to write for, while I was no expert when it came to writing in general, I’d had a little experience, but writing branching dialogue for a dialogue system proved quite the challenge.

Once I had planned out the story and characters I moved onto the dialogue, in order to differentiate between the characters, i planned each characters dialogue a little differently to each other, both in the structure of the dialogue branches and the dialogue itself, after all the dialogue was planned and written I tested it out in game to see which kind dialogue structure worked and which didn’t, finding some dialogue to be too easy to fail too quickly I went back and rewrote certain characters dialogue with one of the dialogue structures that worked better to ensure that players didn’t feel cheated or dissatisfied with how easy it is to fail.

A number of challenges arose when writing the dialogue however, specifically in writing enough options that were of equal quality to each other, it wasn’t easy writing dialogue for options that i knew no one would see. but because of the possibility that someone might just by chance happen to click that option I needed to make it the same quality as the rest.

Further challenges arise in trying to write dialogue for a game feature, were dialogue needs to be a certain length because too much could cause it to go off screen or clip into another option and each npc reply is another set of blueprint nodes that I have to make and implement, its also an interactive story driven game so replies need to be long enough that players feel they got a worthy amount of story from picking an option but not too much otherwise it would become boring.

There is also the issue of having to write dialogue that makes sense regardless of what players picked previously, which makes it really hard to reference back to previous things stated during dialogue because it's possible that this specific player didn't pick that option in the past and so it wouldn't make sense to them now.

What went well

The dialogue system, mostly, while it is still very janky even after I’ve polished it some I feel it ultimately succeeds at what I was hoping to set out for.

From people who have tested the game i've heard they liked the dialogue specifically, though I’m overly critical of my own work it is nice to hear such positive feedback all the same, it is however still an area that I wish to improve on going forward in future though.

I’m glad I managed to get the character models and animations in as even though they don't specifically relate to narrative design they do help players identify and reaffirm the characters personalities for the player.

What Didn't

Also the dialogue system, while I am overall pleased with the result it doesnt change the fact that this was the most difficult thing to make and refine of the whole project, hampered by its initial limitations as the tutorial that I used as a starting point for it clearly did not intend for it to be used for something like this and that it's incredibly impractical for such a full scale project.

Another thing that didn’t turn out like I hoped was the level itself, while I created a much larger level with a wider array of assets, I was unfortunately unable to get it it package  or build due to an unknown lighting build error for which I couldn't find a fix.
