did you hear about that batshit Susan Meachen fake suicide?
.......the what.
No fucking way. I remember when that happened. Good god, there were gofundmes and everything. People worked on her "final" book for free, so it could be published, not to mention the pitty-buy sales drives so her kids would have "something to live off of." Like people grieved. What an awful thing to do. I hope she gets the proper help she needs to realize why what she did was terrible.
And yet it seems like people are buying her stuff expecting it to be unhinged and wild, and yet if I recall, her work was just kind of... fine. Things I never bothered to leave reviews on because I didn't want to be mean.
Good Grief.

The Love Interests in the Works of Jane Austen: An Assessment
This is an "extremely scientific" and "thoroughly researched" ranking based on personality, money, family and connections, and is a bit of a blend between the book characterizations and the film characterizations (and is in no way only based on my own opinions). Here we go, grouped by book but not much else.
Edmund Bertram: absolute trash. His family has treated you unbelievably shitty since day one and not only has he BARELY noticed, he ALSO has treated you shitty. Will fall in love with someone beautiful and fun and when she dumps him will come crawling to you for a rebound. His passion for you is so lackluster that even the esteemed author who wrote about it barely spared a paragraph on your relationship. Has a job but only because his dad owns the land the church is built on. You’ll gain no connections or family by marrying him, since he’s literally your cousin.  0/10
Henry Crawford: There IS such thing as too much fun, and that is never clearer than in this man, who will try to seduce you as a game, freak out when his middling overtures don’t work and then try and seduce you “for really real” this time. You will definitely move up in the world if you marry him, and if you play your cards right it seems like his sister is also just REALLY into you, so see how that goes. Life will be pretty okay until you find him in bed with one (or more, who knows) of your relations. 3/10, 8/10 if you’re into that
John Willoughby: Will be like something out of a romance novel, you’re thinking he’s going to propose and then he just fucking ghosts you and embarrasses the fuck out of you at a party by acting like he doesn’t know you. Somehow marry him (congrats on the inheritance you must have, btw) and get ready to take a backseat to the whims of his aunt for as long as she lives. 1/10, at least you get to live in a nice house.
Edward Ferrars: Oh Edward. He’s a bit of a mess, isn’t he? Super kind, your family loves him, he made a bunch of stupid decisions in his youth that are coming back to bite him in the ass. He is loyal to an absolute fault, but you luck out when his fiance turns out to be a bit of a gold digger and dumps him when his mom disowns him. He doesn’t have a job and neither do you, but his family doesn’t wanna speak to him (lucky you!) and you’ll be happy and poor together if you two can work on your communication skills. 7/10.
Colonel Brandon: He’s got a nice house, the respect of his friends and the community, and he has a LOT of passion. He’ll give your sister’s penniless husband a job, dramatically rescue you from a rainstorm, make sure his dead girlfriend’s daughter is happy and taken care of even after your ex fucks HER over too, and is all around a pretty decent guy. Just. Uh. Maybe, kinda, sorta, needs to go after women his own age and is probably with you because you remind him of his dead girlfriend. 5/10 with the wildly inappropriate age gap, 9/10 without it.
Mr. Wickham: Please don’t. He’s a thirsty bitch who lives for drama and you think he’s fun until you find out he tried to sleep with one teenage girl and is making eyes at your fifteen year old sister behind your back. Marry him (through the grace of mysterious benefactors, cause he ain’t marrying anyone unless he’s paid the right price) and get ready for a life of being surrounded by military men in the north of England while your husband tries to fuck everything that moves. Work that out somehow with him and you might actually be happy. 0/10.
Mr. Bingley: He is a softboi who will do literally anything his friends tell him to do. He is SUPER rich, and marrying him will throw your sister’s into the path of other rich men and he is REALLY into you, but get ready to be sucking up to his sisters for literally the rest of your life. Unless he can ship Miss Bingley off to live with Mrs. Hurst, have fun trying to wage a war of barely concealed insults over the breakfast table every morning, and if you’re marrying Bingley I’m sorry but that is a war you just cannot win. He doesn’t have a job but he does have five thousand a year, and neither of you can manage money. You’ll love simply and deeply and be happy as any two can be. 8/10.
Mr. Collins: Last resort to rescue yourself from a life of being a burden to your parents until they die and then having to become a governess or something. Has a job but never shuts up about his boss. You will have to rearrange everything in your house according to his boss’ will. 2/10
Mr. Darcy: Is a anxious disaster who doesn’t know how to talk to girls at parties and needs to learn how say no to going out when he’s just not feeling it. He doesn’t have a job because he’s a landlord; he owns half of Derbyshire and has ten thousand a year, but turns out that all of that money and land can’t buy tact or charisma. Doesn’t know how to flirt and thinks he’s doing a great job (he’s not). He’ll propose to you out of the fucking blue one day by insulting literally everything about you, but don’t worry! Reading his letter unlocks Darcy 2.0. This patched version gives him humility, a personality, and he WILL gain the ability to rescue your family from utter ruin. Marry him and enjoy a life of luxury and witty ripostes, but beware! You ARE going to have to deal with Lady Catherine until the day she dies, not to mention Caroline Bingley’s barely concealed contempt every time you meet in polite company. Darcy 1.0 3/10, Darcy 2.0 8/10.
Captain Wentworth: Absolutely top tier. Has a job, has earned everything he has, including a fortune and the respect of his peers, superiors, and subordinates. His sister and her husband are practically the only happily older married couple you know, his friends are super fun and nice (even the dour one with all the poetry knows how to have a polite conversation). If you dumped him ten years ago on the advice of your almost comically shitty family yeah, he’s going to hold a grudge, but he WILL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU and the MOMENT he gets over his pride will do everything and anything in his power (including leaping the bounds of propriety!) to win you back. Based on his love, money, and connections you should RUN, not walk, into his arms TODAY and allow him to rescue you from your family and whisk you off to see the world on his ship, at least until Napoleon busts out of Elba. 12/10
Mr. Eliot: Will lose all your old schoolfriend’s husband’s money in a bad deal, has debts out the ass, might be trying to get with either you or the woman your dad has been flirting with for the last few years, you’re not sure. Is totally ruining the rekindling relationship you’re trying to get going with your far superior ex. He wants the land and title your dad has and will stop at nothing to get it. Marry him and you can move back into your old house (maybe? it’s a little unclear what with all the debts) but have every single cent your mother left you immediately put into some dumbass scheme. 1/10
Henry Tilney: another softboi who just wants to act in the school play while his dad and brother plan to ship him off to military school and berate him for not joining the football team. Bring him shopping with you to pick out dresses, spend long nights over tea chatting about books. Has a job, but again, only because his dad owns the land the church is on. Loves you even though you have some very strange ideas about his house, and will forgive you when he realizes you thought his dad either murdered or imprisoned his mom. If he can find the courage to tell his dad to fuck off and let him live his own life, expect a long, happy marriage of snuggling together in a window seat somewhere, sipping tea and reading. 9/10
John Thorpe: Trash bastard man. Peaked in whatever equivalent of high school he had. Shitty and rude to everyone, would post racist memes on facebook and start fights if he could, all while being shitty and manipulative and CREEPILY possessive of you. -2/10
Robert Martin: A sweet himbo farmer who just wants to love and worship you. He has a job, is pretty rich, and while his connections may not be above his class, he’s an earnest boy who wants to take care of you and be taken care of in turn. Marry him the first time, absolutely do NOT let your friend influence you against him, because who KNOWS if you will get a second proposal! (You will, he likes you THAT much.) Marry him and enjoy a sweet, simple life of exactly zero drama (unless your friend is around). 7/10
Mr. Elton: Trifling gold digging trash who doesn’t know what the word no means. Do not marry, unless you want to be censured by decent, hardworking people -1/10
Frank Churchill: Knows how to have fun, but you know there’s something more going on. He won’t let you see his letters, he sends out secret notes, then he smiles and tells you that everything is totally a okay. Another boy with ANOTHER overbearing aunt, only this one doesn’t know how to say no. Marry him if you’ve got the money, but he will always be longing after the poor girl next door that auntie wouldn’t let him married, and would have cheated on you already if she was into it. 3/10
Mr. Knightly: He’s your brother in law and you’ve known him almost your whole life, so that’s a little sus, but he is also the ONLY person in your entire life who knows how to tell you no (and you really, REALLY need to be told no sometimes.) He is extremely wealthy, but more importantly he’s kind and caring about people who are considered “beneath” him. He will break his weird no dancing rule to dance with your shy friend, he will ream you out for being shitty to unwed spinsters who value your opinion, and somehow has the correct read on everyone all the time. You will gain no connections by marrying him, since the two of you already have the exact same connections anyway, but the two of you should be content in a test of wills that will last a lifetime. You’ll be very happy as long as he doesn’t get super pedantic and start correcting you about everything. 7/10

Fav voltage games and any guys similar to you???
thanks for the ask!
[5] favourite games:
1. Her Love in the Force: because i’m So Predictable. honestly i feel this game is one of the strongest overall. the writing is incredible, the mix of drama and romance and action is perfect, the plots are always so interesting. i sometimes play other games and then kind of put it down before i’m finished with a route but with HLITF, i have to finish the whole route ASAP because i love the feeling of investigating and uncovering the plot in addition to the developing romantic relationship. also all the love interests are really top notch, and you really get to see the mc’s development into an incredible detective. can’t go wrong with this game at all. i recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone.
2. Dreamy Days in West Tokyo: this game makes me feel nostalgic for a high school experience i never even had. this is voltage’s sweetest game of all time (i say that but i actually never played class trip crush or any of the other school life ones lmao). if you love school life shoujo manga and osananajimi romances that you actually get to see develop all the way to marriage, this is the game for you. the reason that it’s one of my faves is that it’s actually surprisingly quite full of drama and anguish as well and i found a lot of the conflict in the relationships really quite relatable. i also love the camaraderie between the whole friend group :)
3. Be My Princess: a true classic. this is one of the first voltage games i ever played. i totally understand why it had to come to an end but how i wish there was more BMP content. give us butler routes voltage you cowards!!!!! BUM is not the same!!!! anyway wow this was back when princesses were the trend for MCs and now i guess everyone is just raring for action MCs. i miss Average Girl MCs - anyone else? i’d love to see more political drama in BMP too… i’m also especially nostalgic for this game because the OG voltage tumblr crew were so much fun
4. Kiss of Revenge: such a good game that i wish they continued. this is when i feel like voltage was peaking with their more mature games and MCs. the only good and valid Dr. MC, RMD MC needs to learn from her. this is another game where i wish there were more content. i love that the MC is the focal point of the drama rather than the love interests. although i do suppose it is a game where the premise only really allows for limited content…
5: A Knight’s Devotion/My Sweet Bodyguard: AKD is just MSB in medieval times. i couldn’t decide between the two because the premise is basically the same and AKD is just the ‘less content’ version of the two. i do still really like the bodyguard/knight falling in love with his mistress trope, and i don’t really mind that the MC is kinda weak physically. people always slag her off for just like panicking when she’s in precarious situations but unless you’re a seasoned fighter, you would panic in real life too, don’t lie. there are different types of strengths and i feel like the AKD/MSB MCs demonstrate the type of tolerance and understanding that really complements their LIs. also i’m forever grateful for MSB for giving us the greatest spinoff app of all time, HLITF.
6. BONUS it’s not an otome game but Voltage released this game 生存率0%! 地下鉄からの脱出 which is a VN horror survival type game? I’ve been wanting it since I saw the trailer in 2013.
[5] guys similar to your personality:
all the tsunderes lol. no but for real
1. Ayumu Shinonome: this is strange because i love him so much as a LI haha. but in actuality, we’re pretty similar. i’m pretty bad at expressing my feelings for people even if i feel them so strongly and i kind of send out hints here and there and expect my SO to get them (and he gets it just enough for me to feel like this a viable form of communication lol). in general i’m the type of person who often does things without explaining myself and internalise everything when i’m annoyed. i did one of those stupid facebook meme generator things about myself and it came up with this which is so accurate i hate it
Tumblr media
i’m also the type to put a lot of value on toiletries/cosmetics lol, i’ll spend an hour hovering around the chemist/drugstore and i’ll do SO much research before buying new makeup/skincare/haircare etc. ayumu and i share a motto which is “要靚唔要命” (fashion > comfort/life lmao)
i also take my teaching pretty seriously (although… i would never ever date a student) like literally i’ll have to get up at 7am to teach a 9am seminar and then i’ll still be up at 4am thinking of activities to try to get them to practice applying a certain theory or adjusting the wording of my questions to get them to understand something better. i love peach tea and i used to get it from the vending machine every day when i was in school lmao and i was not gonna reveal this for fear of seeming lame but i’m just gonna admit that i also have a dinosaur phone case hahahaha although i got it just cause it was cute and not cause i’m a dinophile. anyway the big difference between us though is that ayumu is a genius while i am made up of Dumbass Juice
2. Toru Kurosawa: i’m loathe to admit it but i’m also kinda similar to this….. freaking……. guy…….. cause he’s kinda cheerful and sometimes a bit of a chatterbox on the surface but also kinda… two-faced?? which, same. i don’t really take things seriously unless it’s actually a big deal to me and then i’m like SUPER serious about it. also my friends probably all find me super annoying l m a o there was a time in my life where i would spam my close friend circle group chat and everyone would just ignore me
another similarity is that we tend to push people away when we have personal issues to deal with. i always try to sort my own shit out before involving anyone else even if the situation involves them (but this also means that even if something is not my fault i’ll find a way to rationalise that it is my own fault and then accept it as my own problem and the other person will get off scot free)
3. Rihito Hatsune: oh? what’s that? another Bad Personality Guy? i think i’ve toned this down a fair bit from before but i can actually be pretty manipulative with guys and instead of being up front and direct, i’ll just do and say things that will get me the response that i want (lol the recurring theme here is that i’m a terrible person and bad communicator. @ my boyfriend, thank you for putting up with me for 4 years lol). i’m also a classically trained musician (but stopped just short of applying to conservatory for musical performance when i did my uni applications back in the day cause i suck at theory)
4. Mizuki Fujisaki: beyond all my two-facedness, bad interpersonal communication skills and other general negative personality traits, i think mizuki and i are similar in that we share the same airheadedness. like i think we both share a brainwave and that brainwave is only accessible in outer space. in mizuki, it’s cute. in me, it’s… ADHD maybe…??? who knows.
5. Glenn Casiraghi: it’s hard to find 5 different guys who are similar to me lol. i guess i would go with glenn because he has a complex about his age (i too have always been the youngest in my cohort - family, friends, schoolmates, etc. and i have such an inferiority complex about it lol) and he can be kinda spoilt but also pretty responsible when he has to be

Top of 2019
With 56 films watched and 27 favorited in 2019, I composed a list of my top. By pure happenstance, the list is almost an exact third (18) of the total films watched. Be aware that I don’t have as much to say about some of these because I took no notes after.
Because I’d be biased towards them, I don’t count the National Theatre Live plays.
Since the list is likely to be altered between now and the end of February (to accommodate for films missed), check the Lettboxd list later on to see an up to date listing, but be aware that it intentionally lacks the details provided here.
EDIT (01/04/20):
Woke up this morning religiously re-reading this and caught some grammar errors. It’s almost like staying consistently well-rested is actually beneficial. While I’m at it, Blind Rating (BR) is how worthwhile the film is watching “blind” (or knowing nothing). The scale is 1 (worth it) to 5 (you must). ‘Eh is essentially a 0.5.
1. Midsommar (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw the original and Director's Cut in theatres and discussed them with a group immediately after both times. I’m somewhere between really liking it and loving it. Still unsure. Hell of an experience with a lot to notice, debate over, and pick up on during the second viewing. Don’t even get me started on the Christian/Dani matter. Dat tension, tho. Blind Rating: 4/5
2. Us (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. I’m digging the allegories and the way (I think) it reflects on society. Dem reveals, tho. Blind Rating: 4/5
3. Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. Two things probably play a huge hand in this not being atleast 3 spots lower: my demographic and the fact that her older self constantly reminded me of my grandma and a certain middle school teacher. Regardless, it’s an entertaining, interesting, and lively documentary with its many personalities on-screen all giving their take on matters along with Ms. Morrison herself. Glad they managed to finish and release this 1.25 months before her death. Blind Rating: 0/5
4. When They See Us (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw on Netflix over the course of a month. Y’all, this one hurt too much to watch again any time soon. Admittedly, part of the reason why it hit me so hard is because I could easily have been one of them. Dat ending, tho. Don’t forget to watch the Oprah followup When They See Us Now after. You’ll ball (again). Blind Rating: 3/5
5. Parasite (South Korea)
Tumblr media
Saw an advance screening in theatres and watched a live post-film Q&A. I really like it. This hit me in such a way that it’s one of three films I’m writing an essay on. Planing on watching it a second time soon so I can finish with a sense of accuracy. This isn’t one that I would recommend looking at images for. There are some that will spoil the experience of the second half. Seriously, block the “Parasite” tag from your feed if you can. Blind Rating: 3/5
6. Luce (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. This was is so~ good as a thriller and especially in regards to being Black in America. Wanted to watch it a second time but never managed to squeeze it in before it left theatres. Dem performances, tho. Dat tension, yo. Dat score, bro. Blind Rating: 1/5
7. Them That Follow (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with someone immediately after. I love it. Blind Rating: 1/5
A drama influenced thriller about a religious and somewhat self-isolating community that's effectively blanketing a realistic romance. (snip) —Letterboxd review
8. The Souvenir (United Kingdom)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres (partially because so many movie peeps were shitting on it). I love it, but I didn't fucking love it. Was tempted to see it again, but didn’t get the chance. Dat ending, tho. While it was a movie peep telling me the whole plot that caused me to gain so much interest in it [Cabin in the Woods (2011) all over again, amiright?], I must say that the less you know the better. It’ll make for... a more immersive experience. Blind Rating: 3/5
9. After the Wedding (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. I thought I really liked it, but I love it. This was a trip down unexpected lane, le'me tell ya. The trailer is a spoilerful lie, but the Landmark's description is very accurate. People's experiences will have a heavy hand in how they react to it and feel about certain characters. The way they made this feel like a constant thriller was excellently done. Dat cinematography, tho. Go in knowing nothing more than what the previous link provides. Blind Rating: 1/5
10. Joker (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. I really like it. Blind Rating: 1/5
(slight spoilers)
This was difficult to watch at times, but hella captivating throughout. Arthur's reasoning is believable, his sanity is questionable, and his life is indeed one hell of a joke. Like watching an extreme example of what happens when people on the lower end lose access to social programs. This can very easily be taken as a commentary on mental illness kept unchecked. More than that, it's a story about a guy who accepts his "crazy" and transcends poverty, circumstance, and societal bullshit... at everyone else's expense. (snip) —Letterboxd review
11. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with a group immediately after. I really like it. Captivating documentary in a very similar style to Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, but with Mr. Davis never joining the “talking heads” (as people like to call it) and instead being heard as a constant narrator of his own biography. Regardless of how I feel about him on a personal level, this shit was a great watch and the ending hit hard. Still need to get his autobiography, though. There’s a nostalgic factor for me here since I was partially reminded of my grandpa while watching it. Blind Rating: 'eh
12. Queen & Slim (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres and discussed with someone immediately after. Fuck yeah, I enjoyed this one. Dat soundtrack and cinematography, bruh? 👌🏿 The throwback soundtrack, main characters’ racial group, and fact that they went to New Orleans definitely play a hand in why this one’s not atleast 1 spot lower. Blind Rating: 1/5
13. Dwelling in the Fuchon Mountains (China)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres during festival and attended discussion days later. I really like it. Was long, but in a good way. Similar to Ash is Purest White (2018) in that I kept thinking "please end here," but would be glad it didn't later. It's beautifully slothy and has absurdly long tracking shots. The cinematography during walking conversations is notable. Dat trick, tho. Blind Rating: 'eh
14. A Girl Missing (Japan)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres during festival and discussed with a group immediately after. Bruh~, this is a hell of a personal trial. Didn’t expect it to go the places it did. Blind Rating: 1/5
15. Dutch Angle: Chas Gerretsen & Apocalypse Now (Netherlands)
Tumblr media
Saw on MUBI on phone. I love it. This goes over his childhood (for 8 minutes), career paths, photography of 9/11/1973's Chilean coup d'etat, the 6 months he spent on-set photographing Apocalypse Now (1979), and him as a person. What I didn’t expect was how much he would get into the details of things happening during that film’s development. Along with those details are interesting photos presented excellently in a way that’s reminiscent of manga at times. I like the way the photos take center point and are treated like the foreground. It’s like the director and editor forced themselves to remain aware that the documentary was showcasing 15% of the total slides housed in the Nederlands Fotomuseum’s archives in Rotterdam and that most of his Apocalypse Now photos were never seen. Dat score, tho [Ex Machina (2014) vibes]. Blind Rating: 0/5
BTW, it had its official (Dutch national) release by EYE Filmmuseum on 12/19/19 in the Netherlands, so maybe it’ll come to the USA soon. 🤷🏿‍♂️ Forgot to mention it’s been added as a special feature to the 40th anniversary 4K blu-ray disc of Apocalypse Now: Final Cut (2019).
16. Receiver (Ireland)
Tumblr media
Saw on MUBI on phone. I really like it. A very interesting short film in three odd segments. First was disturbing; second was about activism, protests, and politics; third was about the person I assume the film was made for. All compose what I took as a film about the importance of having reliable sound and hearing. Needs to be watched alone with good sound quality (for immersion). Blind Rating: 'eh
17. Bacurau (Brazil)
Tumblr media
Saw in theatres during festival. I really like it. This was some Most Dangerous Game shit with a hell of an ending. The whole game is an allegory of civilized people's obsession with hunting wild animals for "sport". I really like the portrayal of history here and enjoyed the racial matters it lays bare. I can only imagine someone watching this without knowing a thing. Kinda wish I didn’t even read the description beforehand. Digging the soundtrack. Blind Rating: 1/5
18. Little Women (USA)
Tumblr media
Saw on 35mm and discussed with others on separate occasions. I really like it. This was just warming and sad. I felt for the main characters and actually felt satisfied with the way it ended. Considering the type of film, there are handful of typical things for me to complain about. That being said, the movie earned its stars back. I mean, did you not see their attic performances? Shit was dope. Blind Rating: ‘eh

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Tumblr media
Rating: ❤❤❤❤
Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult, LGBT
Release Date: 7 April 2015
Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
Am I late to the party on this one? When I picked up Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli up in the end of financial sales at my local bookstore, I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t know much about it. This is what I knew:
It’s insanely popular
It was turned into a movie I haven’t seen yet
In hindsight, I think that was a good thing. It let me approach the book in a more measured, more objective standpoint. I adored it. As someone who isn’t all that into “cutesy” romances, this exceeded my expectations. I was worried since this was a YA read, but fear not, it was wildly entertaining from start to finish. This is why I try to go into a book with 0 expectations, you are never disappointed.
Not-so-openly gay Simon is a delight. I was worried I would struggle to connect to his character (he is very different to myself in a number of ways), but I found him intensely relatable - he’s a Harry Potter Fanboy. Albertalli writes the teenage voice amazingly well and I hope she is proud of Simon as a character. He is sweet, funny, but not infallible. He makes mistakes and he tries to fix them. It’s all apart of growing up.
“But I'm tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. I get a girlfriend. I have a beer. And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.”
The entire cast of characters are a complete delight to read about, particularly the mysterious Blue. It made me wish I had those deeply forged friendship when I was sixteen - would things have been a little different?
I adored Simon and Blue’s relationship. It started off so simply, communicating through emails, and their connection feels real. I loved that they were struggling with the same issues (being closeted in high-school), I loved their shared interests, I loved them.
Simon’s almost obsession with finding Blue’s identity is reflective of his desire to find himself. It’s relatable, it’s heart-wrenching, and it’s being a teenager. It was hard as a reader not to feel like Simon’s friend. Like you were right there with him.
“It's strange because in reality, I'm not the leading guy. Maybe I'm the best friend. I guess I didn't think of myself as interesting until I was interesting to Blue.”
As someone who actively avoids the young adult genre in its entirety, it’s safe to say that I may have to reassess that stance because of this book alone. I’ve seen this compared to John Green, however, to me, it’s infinitely better than anything he has written.  That being said, I found the blackmail subplot to be insanely distracting, causing me to lose focus of Simon and Blue’s story.
This is a must read not only for teenagers, but also for people who are searching for themselves.

I was tagged by @bgharison (thanks, hon!), so here goes.
Fictional character you relate to most
Discworld's Sam Vimes. Tired, cynical, disillusioned, still trying his damnedest to do the right thing, secretly likes dragons? Yup.
Book you can read over and over without getting tired of it
There are some historical romance novels I can't be bothered to get up and look at the names of. Mostly it's "the slim pink one" when I pick one of those to reread. Sometimes I just read the ending for instant satisfaction because I can narrate every single bit of drama in my sleep and just want the pay-off.
I also listened to Stephen King's Lisey's Story four times and will probably listen to it again at least once this year. Other audio favourites include Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series (especially Foxglove Summer), Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Terry Pratchett's Discworld books (obviously), and Colin Cotterill's Dr. Siri Paiboun series, though I'm only halfway through that one because finding the audio books in English is surprisingly hard so I'm having to resort to actualfax reading. My life is so hard.
Seriously though? What I most love reading over and over without getting tired of it is fanfic. The day I'm not gonna sigh happily and sink into the beauty that is Auburn's Unnatural Selection is probably the day they lay me to rest. Preferably with a copy of Auburn's Unnatural Selection in my biodegradable urn. And @taste-is-sweet & springwoof's Aegis. And @cupidsbower's Happily Ever After (the Pegasus Remix) because that story has the best instance of turning the 'clueless pining' trope on its head that I've ever seen. The latter two also have wonderful podfic. I’m not-so-secretly planning to win a podficcer in a fandom auction one of these days, but Auburn’s fic is crazy-long, so I’mma have to save up for that one.
Favourite comfort tv-show / movie
I prefer comfort reading. Some Disney animated movies, maybe. While You Were Sleeping used to be a regular re-watch.
Fictional character you are most defensive over
Unpopular fannish opinion: fictional characters don't need me defending them.
I mean, yes, there are characters who I think deserve better, but that's what fanfic is for. Maybe I've just been in fandom too long, I don't know. But I'm probably not going to get up in arms over Lemon Chicken Incidents any more. I'll just swallow my bitter disappointment and ignore canon forever.
Show you fell out of love with
Just about every show I ever watched. SG-1 and SGA come to mind, Merlin, Sherlock, Buffy, Community, Monk, The Librarians, Lucifer... I rarely have the attention span to keep a long-term interest, and will-they-or-won't-they plots actively turn me off. I'm not all that crazy about Hawaii Five-0, either, tbh. I just love the characters. Been meaning to get back into Elementary, but I've missed several seasons already, so.
Show you're most excited for
Westworld will return for season 2 next month and I cannot fucking wait.
Your aesthetic
Books, video games, and a steaming mug of tea.
Favourite fanfic tropes
Perceived or temporary character death. (Emotional) hurt/comfort. Angst with a happy ending. Friends to lovers. Crack, obviously. Fairy-tale AUs and magical realism.
Honestly though, as long as it has a happy-ish ending and doesn't contain amnesia, chances are I'm gonna read it.
I'm tagging @kisahawklin, @laylainalaska and @telesilla, if you guys wanna.

10 meme Halloween costumes for people who spend too much time online
Tumblr media
When you finally log off and head to a Halloween party this October 31, you'll want to let everyone know where you've spent the past 364 days: online.
Luckily, while 2018 hasn't given us much in the way of good news, the meme harvest has been bountiful. And a lot of them translate nicely into Halloween costumes.
SEE ALSO: Here's how you need to prank your kids this Halloween
Here are a few of the best — and, more importantly, the easiest to pull off.
1. Mason Ramsey
The Walmart yodel kid is a superstar now, but the getup he wore for his aisle rendition of Hank Williams's "Lovesick Blues" would still make a great costume. You'll just need a white button-down, a red bow tie, a statement belt, and, of course, a pair of cowboy boots. Just be prepared for someone to request a song.
2. Moth and lamp
couples on halloween this year smh pic.twitter.com/Fq0WlShiCI
— Gabe (@thelittlegracs) September 29, 2018
September's hottest pair was the moth and the lamp, although the romance did seem a bit one-sided. This meme would make an impressive couple's costume if you're headed to a particularly internet-y Halloween party. Bonus: neither look is noticeably better than the other, so you won't argue about who gets to be who. In fact, both costumes look pretty uncomfortable.
3. Sad Howdy Boy
hurt by nin vs hurt by johnny cash pic.twitter.com/6HSIsG1X2o
— grean day (@misandrism) March 27, 2018
Find a yellow t-shirt. Paint a sad face on it. Wear a cowboy hat. Put on "Space Cowboy." Practice your despondent "yee-haw."
4. Tide Pod
What should Tide PODs be used for? DOING LAUNDRY. Nothing else. Eating a Tide POD is a BAD IDEA, and we asked our friend @robgronkowski to help explain. pic.twitter.com/0JnFdhnsWZ
— Tide (@tide) January 12, 2018
Sure, you could painstakingly assemble an elaborate cardboard Tide Pod. Or you could just buy this shirt. Or, if you're really feeling low-effort, simply wear one blue item, one white item, and one orange item.
5. Kylo Ren pants
View this post on Instagram
#kylorenchallenge
A post shared by John Mayer 💎 (@johnmayer) on Dec 30, 2017 at 7:00pm PST
A large portion of Instagram already took the #KyloRenChallenge, so why not keep the look going for Halloween? You could even complete the look with one of those weird muscle-shirt-costume-things. Good luck explaining this costume to people who spend a healthy amount of time on the internet.
6. Meghan Markle
A GLOW UP: 15-year-old Meghan Markle to The Duchess of Sussex Rachel Meghan Markle #RoyalWedding pic.twitter.com/d6BhHYg9oC
— laura ✨ (@daisyrdley) May 19, 2018
The Duchess of Sussex isn't just a meme, of course. But she did star in more than a few viral tweets this year. (Welcome, Meghan, to the meme community.) Plus, a Meghan Markle costume is a great excuse to wear and inevitably ruin a beautiful white dress. And you can do fake freckles!
7. Michaela Coel in Black Mirror
your mom on the second house phone eavesdropping on you talking about 7th grade drama pic.twitter.com/UcxU0FR37L
— jaboukie young-white (@jaboukie) January 7, 2018
One of the internet's finest reaction images, Michaela Coel's look from the Black Mirror episode "U.S.S. Callister," would make a wonderful costume even without the meme factor. Be sure to perfect your knowing, conspiratorial facial expressions.
8. "Change my mind" guy
@scrowder the world deserves this pic.twitter.com/1uCGrJMkir
— Diego Martinez (@DiegoLMMartinez) February 21, 2018
Unlike Coel, this guy sucks. But if you can figure out how to make some kind of booth apparatus, he'd make a pretty good Halloween costume. Instead of using his wildly untrue original statement ("Male privilege is a myth"), we'd suggest using a statement from one of the later meme riffs. You don't want to make literally thousands of enemies on Halloween night.
9. Super Bowl selfie kid
Nothing more relatable than this kid trying to pull his phone out to get a selfie is me. #SuperBowlLII #JustinTimberlake pic.twitter.com/1RyQs9jtK2
— Joe K (@kealohajoe) February 5, 2018
Remember that kid who took a selfie with Justin Timberlake Super Bowl halftime show? Get yourself a gray hooded sweatshirt and a bunch of lanyards. Will anyone know who you are? No. But the costume will probably cost $0.
10. "Is This A Pigeon?"
pic.twitter.com/P7JKdRgDG3
— Extra Credit (@ExtraCredit) May 14, 2018
It was the screenshot from anime series The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird heard 'round the world. At this point, "is this a pigeon" memes have reached peak saturation, but the character's look — he's an android, by the way — is super easy to replicate. Get yourself a nice fake butterfly as an accessory. You'll have a great time.
WATCH: 'Stranger Things' will be turning Universal Studios upside down this Halloween

  ABOUT THE BOOK:
New York Times bestselling author Mariah Stewart returns to the cherished Maryland shores of St. Dennis with THE CHESAPEAKE BRIDE (Pocket Books; August 29, 2017; $7.99), the charming story of a jaded architect who meets the one man who could finally melt her heart—if she’s willing to let him in.
Cassidy Logan has sworn off good-looking adventurers, having just divorced the one she’d married. Now working with her father’s construction company to build ecologically friendly, historically accurate homes on the Chesapeake Bay, she’s designing them for Cannonball Island. Knowing there’s been no new construction on the island in almost one hundred years, Cass is sensitive to the heritage and history of the sparsely populated island, and has come up with plans so perfect she’s determined to buy one for herself to live in. Even the fact that Owen Parker—whom she dismisses as a lightweight and a player— seems to be everywhere she goes isn’t enough to deter her from building her dream house.
Owen is and always has been sinfully handsome and wickedly clever, a magnet for mischief as well as the girls in St. Dennis. He’s also a rolling stone, going and doing whatever appeals to him, from flying a mail plane in Alaska to working on a cattle ranch in Australia and a shrimp boat in Louisiana, to surfing and diving in Costa Rica. When an old friend offers him a job salvaging a sunken ship in the Chesapeake, Owen gladly accepts. Something’s been telling him it’s about time to head home to Cannonball Island, and a job is as good an excuse as any. He’s totally smitten with the pretty architect, but it seems he’s finally met a woman who’s immune to his charms. Sooner or later, Owen will have to face the reason why he always runs, because this time, leaving just might be harder than staying.

MY REVIEW OF “THE CHESAPEAKE BRIDE’  A Novel by MARIAH STEWART
I enjoyed the charming and delightful novel, “The Chesapeake Bride” by Mariah Stewart. The genres for this novel are Romance and Women’s Fiction.
I love the way Mariah Stewart describes the charming setting and town on the Chesapeake Bay, in the Cannonball Island. The artistic feel of the houses, the restaurants, the hotel, and the stores are so appealing.  Whether you are clamming, or sailing on a ship, or just relaxing and having tea with home baked delicacies, there is a homey and comforting feel. The old homes are part of this Island, and have tremendous history.
The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Some of the older seasoned characters have memories of the townsfolk that goes back many years. Cassidy Logan is an architect that is working for her father’s big company, and has plans to rebuild the falling down homes and use as much as she can of the materials in her new homes in this historic area. Cassidy wants to preserve the historic feel and preserve the previous family history.   Owen Parker, considered an adventurer and “player” is back at home by the Chesapeake Bay to help his one hundred years old grandmother, who runs the country store. Owen is also looking at the Chesapeake Bay for sunken ships found at the bottom, to determine the historical finds, and dive to retrieve many things.
Owen’s and the other divers have found enough to put a stop to Cassidy’s work temporarily. Cassidy has to find other alternatives to make this work.
There are a cast of colorful and quirky characters. Cassidy and Owen work closely professionally and sparks seem to fly.  On this small island, people are very hospitable.
I appreciate the way the author writes about the importance of family, friendships, loyalty, love and hope. There are some twists and turns and secrets in this novel. This novel is part of a series, but can stand alone.  I was captivated by the charm and story by the author and would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Romance and Fiction. I received a copy of this book for my honest review. This novel is part of a blog tour for Mariah Stewart.

In a world full of dreams-turned-realities, the Kardashians are always at the top of their game. We’ve got all the latest gossip for you on these gorgeous girls, so sit back, relax and watch it all unravel! Product launches, family feuds, and radioactive romances are fast becoming a regular occurrence. Despite their huge success, they can’t help but always find themselves at the forefront of the drama. Or could they, if they tried?

Kim Kardashian West

First up is the most successful sister of them all with a reported net worth of £48 million and that’s without hubby Kanye’s assets in the mix. She recently kick-started her new brand: ‘KKW’ cosmetics. After winning over practically the whole beauty YouTube community, could she become a potential threat to other makeup companies out there… maybe even her lil’ sis Kylie?
#gallery-0-36 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-36 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Although fans have been complaining at the lack of product in the contour sticks and the limited colour range. Not too bad for her first shot at cosmetics though, right? Once Paris Hilton’s assistant, now an influential reality-tv star making millions – oh Kim, how did you do it?! That ‘taboo’ tape with Ray J sure did work its magic but could this sister have built such an amazing life on her own?
#gallery-0-37 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-37 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-37 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-37 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Kimberly juggles being a married mother-of-two and being an infamous celeb. With a manic yet prosperous life she has built for herself, she still finds the time to update her fans on social media, attend all the latest events and rub shoulders with fashion designers and stylists on the daily. We can only imagine.
Khloe Kardashian
Cr: Instagram @khloekardashian
Our gorgeous NBA-Player-Slayer is slowly but surely coming back from the devastation of her unfortunate relationship ending with ex-husband Lamar Odom and she has never looked better! We’ve always been fixated on Khloe K’s love life and we’ve been rooting for her to find the perfect man from day one. Basketballer, Tristan Thompson, is currently taking on that challenge. You better treat our girl right!
In this case, as one door opens, ten doors close for Khloe. We all know what has been going on with Rob’s ‘revenge nude pics’ of Blac Chyna (for her allegedly cheating and involving herself with drugs) and Khloe hasn’t been looking too happy recently with the news. As a strong female figure, she is utterly disgraced and ashamed. However, she has become exercise-driven and career-focused.
#gallery-0-38 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-38 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-38 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-38 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
With the success of her Good American collab, the support of her best friends and the love of her family, she is powering through the controversy. You go girl! Take note: It’s obvious Khloe’s got a soft spot for the little ones, could babies be on the cards for her and Tristan?
Kourtney Kardashian
Cr: Instagram @kourtneykardash
This Armenian babe is the oldest of the sisters although she certainly doesn’t look it! After the final failure of her relationship with father-of-her-children, Scott Disick, she is back on track for her journey to embracing life again. Kourtney looks as if she is finally moving on with pro-boxer, Younes Benjima.
But is he ready for the ultimate family life or is it just a whirlwind romance? This yummy-mummy has always been fairly reserved when it comes to advertising her life so could Younes be the one?
#gallery-0-39 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-39 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
This fiery Kardashian sister has pretty high standards and a long list of people awaiting to approve a new man. There’s bound to be plenty of eligible bachelors out there, right? Let the battle commence!
Kylie Jenner
Cr: Instagram @kyliejenner
She may be lacking in age but she sure isn’t lacking in anything else! This stunning, cosmetic creator and social media phenomenon is just 19-years-old and has a net worth of £16 mill. The cosmetic surgery rumours are old news but her controversial makeup and clothing lines are racking up the drama!

Her ‘Summer Vacation’ collection has been one of the most successful beauty ventures as of yet. However, she has recently been accused of stealing designs from an underground fashion brand who supplied her with an endless range of camo two-pieces in hope of some free publicity.
She reportedly wore them without publicly giving credit and then dubbed them for her own brand. Oops. Her recent collab with Rob, also couldn’t have been released at a weirder time. With the recent ‘Chyna drama’, something just didn’t feel right… #awkward!

Despite everything, Kylie is our #PowerCrush because she will stop at nothing to build her brand! We know a female boss when we see one. Celebrity friendships, uber-fancy sports cars, and Hollywood mansions are just a few aspects of her luxurious, self-made life. Oh, and not to mention her insta-worthy romances. After the recent split from Tyga, she seems to be moving on with fellow rapper Travis Scott! We wonder if she has a type, hmm.
Kendall Jenner
Cr: Instagram @kendalljenner
Kendall Jenner spends her time working on her modelling career and keeping her head held high. She has the ultimate ‘catwalk poker face’ and doesn’t let any of her family’s drama bring her down! After the recent failure of the Pepsi ad, she has reportedly been keeping a low profile. Eek! We don’t blame her.

She is forever pushing fashion-boundaries, vacating with family and enjoying flings with hotties for her fans to gush over. ASAP Rocky is her most recent conquest but will it last or fade away? This sister has a passion for what she does and is always working on top-secret projects with the best designers and celebs out there. How exciting!
The Kardashian Sisters are some of the most iconic symbols of ‘My Life in Selfie’. Do you think you’d have what it takes to make it to the top, no matter how ruthless you’d need to be to get there? If they can do it, so can you.
Kardashians: Product launches, family feuds & more babies? In a world full of dreams-turned-realities, the Kardashians are always at the top of their game. We've got all the latest gossip for you on these gorgeous girls, so sit back, relax and watch it all unravel!

TYPICAL FAMILY DRAMA
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier unfortunately takes a substantial hit in it’s third episode, “Above the Law”. As we fall deeper into the complicated family dynamics with Javi and company, tensions within the newly introduced community simmer, but fails to create a strong episode.
Similar to the previous two episodes, “Above the Law” begins with a flashback three months after the muertos (walkers) emerge. Javi and Kate’s relationship once again prompts responses for engaging in romance or forging platonic boundaries. These flashbacks with Javi offer nice context for his motivation, but this cookie-cutter approach for the first scene in each episode is getting a bit stale. If they were engaging enough, I would have no qualms with this formulaic approach, however, my interest is waning.
Following the flashback, Episode Three picks up immediately where the prior one concludes. David (Javi’s brother and Kate’s (former?) husband) is one of the leaders of the Richmond settlement. Since Kate is critically injured and Gabe is delighted to see his father again, both are rushed into the compound. The others, including Javi, are sent to isolation while they await for the leaders of Richmond to decide their fate. A slew of new characters are introduced, so much so that I nearly had to pause the game to sort them all out in my head. Several common post-apocalypse tropes helped slightly shape these fairly predictable new characters, but didn’t provide enough depth to justify their existence.
As has been the norm for A New Frontier, Clementine has the typical one-off flashback, but this time, finally opens up to the group. I was happy to see that my Clementine opens up to the group, notably because she shut herself off sometime between season two and three of The Walking Dead. I wouldn’t blame Clementine, especially with those heart-wrenching decisions she had made. These few moments during the flashback were the emotional highlight of the season thus far.
Sadly, the emotional attachment was nonexistent in the rest of the episode. Some tense action moments occur, revealing some critical information important to the narrative, but the intended shocking moments were unconvincing. The relationship between David and Javi is tested, similar to the opening scenes in episode one, and your choices help forge it towards amicability or toxicity. However, the final few moments of the episode were especially frustrating. Without revealing too much, I was rolling my eyes by the characters’ quick impulses to switch their opinions with no justification. Just as Clementine’s flashback was the emotional highlight of the season, the final moments are the lowest points in the season’s writing.
The disappointment for this episode was also compounded by a glaring glitch that occurred throughout the episode.Javi’s character model randomly and consistently had a piece of his shirt jettison out from him, ruining the immersion for me within the game. The typical frame rate hiccups did occur less often, but nevertheless, happened every so often during the action scenes.

The Verdict: 6.5 out of 10
Despite “Above the Law” having some strong and emotionally driven flashbacks, the present day story was unconvincing and vanilla. The story issues are compounded further by the game’s glitching throughout the 1.5 hour episode. Based on the previous two great episodes, I am hopeful that the final two can turn things around from this disappointing dud.
