Sketch dump! Vol. 3 August 2022

Literally dumping all the presentable works here as promised, whether I’m proud of them or not!

The first image was inspired by a color palette of a random YT playlist thumbnail! I really loved it and wanted to turn it into a cosy travel & rain scene with colorful city lights smeared like dripping wet watercolors. The second one is a KH3 reference! Do you recognise this scene? I don't know how he would possibly end up there in the first place, but he sure is determined to find his dear brother by breaking through the edge of the world!

How to make Ingo smile, step 1: Make him spell "Emmet"! And a goofy cartoon collision moment ahah!

They are very satisfied after a challenging match, win or lose, and they want you to come back for another ride! I love the twins as they appear in Pokémas the most and try to capture the personalities their English VAs give in my art. They are adorable, excitable, cool and very much admirable!

Emmet always wants to look cool, and Ingo surely gives the most heartfelt handshakes! This piece was to celebrate 1K followers on Twitter! The first three months were wild as so many people found my works!! I fondly reminisce that time, not only I was doing well with my first fanart account, I also felt very happy in general! I was so in the zone with art, being super creative free of worries. It's awesome to see most of the people who commented this back then are still posting/in contact with me!! Thank you so much for sticking with me and my little shenanigans!

Early Breakmas AU sketch (Team Break Submas); going full speed after trainers to collect their pokémon... What would you do if these two giant traffic cones approached you at high velocities?

Excadrill & Archeops, the soft & fluffy guys! Some of my first sketches of the submas mons. Excadrill has become my no. 1 submas mon, I adore that tough little missile knight! Archeops is definitely one of the most appealing ones! I love how he kinda has 4 wings he glides with. However I cannot unsee the snake in a parrot suit ahahah, pardon me! Also I pity the poor guy's in-battle idle animation where he has to flap SO HARD just to stay afloat!

Also Durant & Galvantula! I never was a fan of Durant but I've found ways to have fun drawing this little mischievous creature. They're after your ankles nyehehehe~ Galvantula also wasn't appealing to me until submas fever hit but now I think it's a pretty cute beast! I really like how I drew that fur, which is funny because it was that bristly blue fur that didn't strike my fancy back then!

Still enjoying this sketch! Took me some time to read the lines though ahah, the sketch so loose. He's leading a complete opposite life now...

Surprise!!! I held an art raffle on my Twitter account once but I never finished the piece for no good explanation other than getting stuck with the depot agent designs. I wanted to finish this so badly but just couldn't get over that mental block. It still bothers me I couldn't do it!

So people in general seem pretty down on the new show Those About To Die but I really liked it. I do think the criticisms are mostly correct -- every aspect of the production is kinda mid and some choices are pretty baffling. But since I liked it a lot and there's already enough negativity out there, I'll just post some positive thoughts about it instead:

Unlike most shows these days, there is NO silly mystery box plot. What you see is what you get. All load-bearing questions are "what will happen" and not "why is this happening".

Almost every character is complex and interesting, and only one of them gets backstory flashbacks to achieve that.

This is also true for the women. Sure, the actual main central dudes are all men (except Calla), but the secondary characters have a really solid mix.

Nice grey morality where you kind of end up rooting for the side that is objectively worse.

This show used old fashioned historical fiction stereotypes in interesting ways. It's not exactly subversion, but it took a bunch of old clichés out of the toybox and did something with them.

So many little plots that my brain just runs away with... I could write a dozen little novels based on this show, and maybe. I will.

I enjoyed the spectacle. Yeah, the CGI doesn't look real, but I have AN IMAGINATION. I'm not expecting LotR level special effects from a TV show. It was fine.

Finally somebody made a history show ethnically diverse by putting it in a setting that was diverse irl...

... and finally somebody made a horny show by putting it in a horny setting. Also, it's pretty equal-opportunity horny for all tastes.

It was kinda fun how they presented the Germanic gladiator as the exotic barbarian with mysterious foreign wisdom, while all the Mediterraneans and Africans were the humdrum everyday normies. Realistic, but unusual.

Beautiful and atmospheric sets and costumes.

Some creative set pieces like the timekeeping dolphins, the betting boards, or the little horse statues that I liked a lot.

And this is not an exclusive list or anything. It's a fun show!

In regards to that one anon mentioning Miku's age. I find it a little counter productive as while Miku's age is 16 by default, her whole purpose is kind of to be customized to any artist liking. She's not locked to being 16

And if you want my opinion, the old 2010s advertisements of Miku driving a car show she's able to drive legally in the US without a liscenced driver with her, making her at least 18 in those ads (bc that's the law and those ads were made for the US). Which is why I don't think she's locked to her age.

I'm not saying you're doing anything malicious, or the anon is trying to be mean. I think its silly to have the idea you're trying to have fun in a suggesstive way, but even if you were there's not exactly a huge argument against you. Miku is meamt to be enjoyed in any shape and size, so keep enjoying her and making nice art!

I'm sorry I also see Miku is...well a fictional character...and that she changes from literally anything to everything...and well shes a medium to make songs...songs that have different lyrics. I dont know if this contributes to anything but I grew up with consuming vocaloid media, part of me feels like she grew up with me as well. Despite being fictional, I never saw her in one place as many people keep and still use her. Its like how much time has passed also changed her in a way as how many different people used her voice.

The first time I saw her was even before Debbie called me on the holdup. I had some debts to pay, and dedicating myself only to studying in my university years had left me with zero work experience. So, the only company that had helped me get a job after studying “Fashion Design” was the big Chanel store in Soho, New York.

Daphne was doing some shopping in the area, until a group of paparazzi began to chase her, forcing her to enter a store so that her bodyguards could disperse the press and get her into her truck.

I was arranging the seasonal clothes, trying not to focus my eyes on her figure, but she did look at me, she gave me a smile and I can even listen to a little of her conversation with her team while she walked around the store, trying not to get bored while waiting.

It didn't take long for the truck to pull up in front of the store, and as quickly as that happened, Daphne was gone.

Some time later, Debbie came to me, the mythical (and forgotten) Rose Weil needed a reliable right hand to carry out this theft; and both Lou and Debbie knew how badly she needed that money.

Although I never got to meet Daphne herself in the many times Rose had had to meet with the actress, the next time I saw her, it was at the Met. My good friend Lou needed a confidence booster, and right now, she was grateful for the multiple episodes of Masterchef she'd seen.

By the time I had been given my new diamond bracelet to put in the little bag I carried with me, right at that moment, I was able to relax. I had been under so much stress that I had barely been able to enjoy the big party Tammy had thrown us into.

And there, again, was Daphne. Her eyes collided with mine again, but now, instead of bringing out my kinder side and trying to give her a smile, I quickly looked away from her eyes. Debbie said she wanted to lay low. It sounds silly, Daphne Kluger, a Hollywood star wouldn't remember my face, not when she sees millions of people every day, why would she remember the face of a simple employee who doesn't earn even 3% of what she earned in a single movie?

Time passed again. Now, right at this moment Lou and Debbie were making sure that each part of the jewels were being sold so that they could deposit the corresponding part in each of the eight bank accounts; while that was going on, i had to keep working at the store, i still had to look like a job… and to be honest, i worked so hard at this damn store, all i ask in return is a decent damn reward.

My boss had asked me to put the makeup and perfume products behind the counter, so I did, putting all my attention on the task, which caused me not to notice that someone had arrived at the store; more specifically, that someone had stood in front of me.

"I knew I had seen you"

My head that was inside the showcase could only see a flat stomach covered in a fine brown cloth; Quickly my eyes looked up only to meet Daphne's face.

I tried to get up quickly until my head hit the glass. Forgetting that my head was still inside the glass case.

She just let out a small smile that she hid behind her hand, but despite that, I could notice flashes of concern.

"What?"

Ask, now with your head out of the glass space.

"It's you, isn't it?, the one who wore that sexy dress at the MET"

"I… I'm sorry…?"

"Of course you were there! I wouldn't forget a face as pretty as yours." I could feel the heat and redness rising up my neck and settling on my cheeks, causing Daphne's brown eyes to take on a different glow. You know, the party where I supposedly dropped the famous necklace…”

“ 'Supposedly'? What do you mean 'supposedly'?”

“It turns out that… the necklace found was fake; the actual necklace hasn't turned up, so a private investigator is helping to find it.” Damn. Debbie promised that it was almost impossible to use an investigator for this. Damn "The investigator has as a major suspect a certain Debbie Ocean… and he told me that even though she has a perfect alibi, he still maintains her as the main suspect" I felt the muscles in my neck and shoulders tense, it even felt like a metal ball was falling. It will start to form in my esophagus and try to go down. "I guess you don't have anything to do with that Debbie girl, do you, sweetie?" just as I was about to open my mouth to answer her question, she spoke again "wait, isn't that the blonde you shared a few drinks with at the party?"

She raised her eyebrows, putting my body between a rock and a hard place; because, not only was she one of the most beautiful women in the world, I now realized, she was one of the most intelligent women in the world. She already knew it, and I couldn't hide it

"Good morning Miss Kluger, can we help you with something?"

My boss had come to our place, screaming with her eyes to get back to work

"Yes, I would like to buy the blouse that your employee models" Both pairs of eyes fell on my blouse "And if it comes with the model, it would be a thousand times better"

She winked again, causing the blush to intensify on my cheeks.

The sound that the doors made when opening made us all stop doing our activities, only to pay attention to the beautiful actress who had just entered Lou's place.

"You guys are FUCKED"

She spoke while walking towards us, sitting in the chair that was in front of me.

"Sorry?" Tammy asked. "How did you get here?"

"We invite her" Lou spoke

they were all silent

“Chilly,” Daphne remarked at the glances given by the rest of the group, “what about, 'Hi Daph, welcome to the team. Let's not all high five at once.'”

“Discovered Y/N” was Debbie's turn

"What?!" they all shouted

“Y/N…how did you let her find you out?”

"I…"

"She didn't do anything," Daphne defended me. “I'm just not the typical dumb Hollywood actress”

“Miss Kluger, here, figured out the move from the start; only that its common thread was Y/N”

"Of course, not to mention that discreet is not a word I would use to describe them."

They all remained silent, looking at each other trying to understand the situation, while bitch Constance the time out to see the cards of the others. Damn cheating bitch.

"Not to mention that the private investigator is about to check each one of you asses"

"Investigator?" asked Rose scared

"That was not in the plan" Amita spoke

“That's why Miss Kluger is here. She herself offered to help us."

"Why would you help a group of criminals?" question Tammy

“Are you an only child?” I asked causing giggles

"Well, I don't have many friends, and book clubs are stupidly boring."

"So… you decided to help criminals because you don't have any friends?"

"Yep, she is definitely an only child" spoke Eight Ball

"Okay, ladies, with this done, I think we can continue" Lou spoke.

Of course, I knew Lou very well, and I knew that she considered herself the queen of the UNO, so, I wanted to embarrass ourselves.

Lou, Eight Ball, Constance and I played UNO, while Debbie and Tammy talked in the kitchen, serving up a few slices of pizza, just as Amita and Rose talked about some designers, leaving Daphne alone.

Knowing that having Lou, a master of the game and a cheating bitch like Constance; I put the game down and got up, walking to the front to return to sit next to Daphne.

"Hello" I greeted as I raised my hand, squeezing hers in a warm squeeze "I'm Y/N"

"Wow, I'm glad to name a pretty face like yours."

How was it so easy for her to make me blush?

"Well, I'm glad to put a cute personality on a not-so-simple, pretty face."

It was her turn to blush

Lou dropped her game a bit and stood up next to Debbie and Tammy, putting an arm around Debbie's shoulders.

"Okay, how much do you bet those two are going to end up dating?" with her chin she pointed to the figure of Y/N and Daphne, who were getting closer and closer

“Dating?, I bet my life Y/N is already planning their wedding,” Tammy teased.

"She even knows where her honeymoon is going to be," Debbie continued, giving Lou a kiss on the cheek.

I don’t even know how you convinced them to be your CG, but congratulations because you are the luckiest of ducks! You literally get to be the exception to the “all cookies are weak and must die” mentality they have!

I mean, they probably agreed to it because your regressed state reminds them of the hatchlings that used to frolic in the days of old. They find that attribute quite endearing.

Not exactly the type to play that much, if at all, but they will at least watch you as you do so.

Decently stern and has quite a few rules, but none of their punishments are too harsh. It’s mostly just time out or no dessert.

Will read to you, but they do not like reading childish books! It’s very rare for them to do that, and if they do read one of them you best believe that they won’t be doing any exaggerated voices or making any silly noises.

If they’re away they will definitely utilize their all-seeing dragon eyes to watch over you in their absence. Making it impossible to break rules while they’re away!

Not the most protective(that title would definitely belong to Pitaya, methinks), but when other dragons or cookies get involved they will suddenly become an incredibly protective CG who will immediately help you leave if the situation gets uncomfortable. Or if they just don’t trust the others, or not like the situation themselves

They aren’t the best at showing it, they’re probably the worst at it to be honest, but they do love you and you shouldn’t take that love for granted! After all, how many people can say that Longan Dragon Cookie loves them?

And that’s it! This was actually pretty fun to write and I enjoyed it quite a bit! I must say, coming up with a lot of this was challenging, but that makes the payoff and finished product even better in my eyes. That’s it, have a good one 🫶

Preface that while I think this is fun, I really don't generally think songs are a good vehicle to extrapolate about the real life of these people. So, I try not to base my analyses of them as people on these songs, even the ones I feel more strongly about.

I'll categorize these by how certain I am about them (and I'll leave out confirmed stuff like Too Many People, Early 1970, How Do You Sleep?, Run of the Mill, Here Today etc.)

If you have a question re: why some specific song is in this category and not the other I can try to explain, though some of it is admittedly just vibes (and since I try to separate this from the Main Analysis™, I feel okay utilizing the vibes as a justification at times lol) If I left a song off you'd like my take on feel free to ask as well.

Close to positive:

Day Tripper is imho at least partially about Paul. This one feels so obvious to me, given what John said about it and the timeline (written squarely before Paul took LSD, conveniently after the whole LA fiasco), yet I rarely see people talking about it. Sad! It could also be partially about Cynthia.

Tug of War: Paul said it was about John in 1982 but then retconned that. IDK why he did that but. Come on!

I Know (I Know): I nearly put this one a tier lower but the I've Got A Feeling intro and the way it fits in the timeline. The Getting Better reference. It matching up with Paul's description of them tripping together + "share in each other's mind". It's too much.

A compelling case can be made:

In My Life: it makes a lot of sense. But Paul isn't the only likely muse IMO. he might be the most likely one, I'm not sure. I Know (I Know) makes me tend more to it though, admittedly.

3 Legs: yeah. Probably! It's not entirely clear to me what he's expressing outside a feeling of betrayal though.

Oh! Darling: Likely about John, but perhaps actually about the band as a whole.

The Answer's at the End: the way George quoted that same saying when asked about Paul in that live chat… THE IMPLICATIONS! (at least that maybe George came to associate the song with Paul later on?)

Remember: I tend to think this song is specifically about running away from the Beatles. There's more sadness in it, given John references Bring It On Home in the lyrics.

Who Can See It: this one also appears to be about George's general relationship with the Beatles. I don't think this is a hot take but no one talks about this song lol. I love it!

Cafe On The Left Bank: the song referencing Charles de Gaulle making a speech does place this quite firmly in the 60s. It's not really a love song though so I don't get why people consider this one such a win lol. It seems to mostly be about the city of Paris itself.

I like to think it's true but am admittedly not sure:

Call Me Back Again: it's a vague song, really. But damn… those mellotron flutes.

#9 Dream: IDK. this versus "The dream is over". the production-style. I like reading this song as a reconciliation with The Beatles as a concept.

Little Lamb Dragonfly: the whole being haunted by the dragonfly even though you're trying to move on thing :/

No Words: COME ON??????? but the Denny writing credit does puzzle me lol.

Crippled Inside: it would be soooooo devastating @ Paul!!! (probably only partially, possibly also self-directed)

Could have been inspired by the other but not necessarily in the way people think:

Some People Never Know: I do think Paul felt John was cynical in the way he's describing in this song. (I don't really think I Know (I Know) is a response to this song btw)

Silly Love Songs: ditto. He is Not fucking saying "I love you" (romantically) to John in the song he's duetting with his wife lol. but it could be a cheeky lil nod.

We Can Work It Out: I believe Paul when he says this was written about a fight he'd had with Jane. But Paul was also in conflict with John at the time (again, the LSD thing), thus I think that might have in some way informed his outlook when writing this. And John may have been thinking about their conflict while writing his part.

Let Me Roll It: it sounds a lot like John, yeah! but idk about the lyrics.

Look At Me: it could be about Paul, but it could be about the whole world, really. It's more a wish to be seen and understood really.

Dear Boy: I'm annoyed by people insisting Paul is lying when he says the inspiration is Linda's ex-husband. She's co-credited (and she actually isn't credited on every Ram song. I don't think the credit was "handed" to her, at least not at this point in time)! That being said, Paul may have bonded with Linda over feeling unappreciated in their previous life situations.

Yvonne's The One: Look. I think John's death really shifted how Paul felt about telling people he loved them. That may well have influenced the lyrics song. I don't think it's necessarily that literal.

However Absurd: ditto. This song is even more abstract so it feels even less literal.

If I Fell: usually I think no it couldn't possibly. But– (And I don't find that Valentines card very compelling, no. but it's just like: well then who else would this song John called very personal about? I guess, for all I know, it could even be Brian. wow!)

Girl: I mean. Maybe! Sort of. They also said at the time it was about religion, and that makes a lot of sense, but it could still be that the character of the girl was inspired by how John felt about Paul at the time.

I'm So Tired: it seems equally likely to be about Yoko to me.

Don't Let Me Down: ditto. Actually. this one's more likely Just about Yoko tbh.

I'm Losing You: maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe. but also. Yoko.

Now And Then: genuinely who knows. this one's admittedly stranger for Yoko but… they did "interrupt" their relationship often, requiring to "start again". Also May is an option.

The Pound Is Sinking: Mostly, I don't know how straightforward it is.

Honestly… Not really

(Just Like) Starting Over: the "My Love", "Another Day", "Wings" thing has never compelled me, based on those being OLD songs by 1980, plus none of the phrasing or word choice is particularly conspicuous to me. But I also don't feel very strongly that it's not about Paul. It could be, though I don't know that I'd assume it was meant as a direct declaration of love then. Also the line before being a reference to Through The Looking Glass is neither here nor there. Since when is John Lennon dropping Lewis Caroll references only reserved for Paul? that feels like putting the cart before the horse, based on one single lyric in Glass Onion.

I've Got A Feeling: I think he's just saying words here, tbh.

Real Love: if it's about Paul that's fucking depressing. But I don't think it is really.

Still with you in the wait and see approach. I need to be confident that relationship is bones and there won't be signs of it until at least the premiere.

that’s where i’m at too. i also just think someone needs to remind tim minear of what exactly his job is. his job isn’t to stir up fandom drama (and then complain about drama that he himself is partially to blame for but then refuse to directly call out the toxic ones) his job is to tell a story; but he decided that wasn’t what his job was the moment he scrapped 7b to rewrite it into whatever that mess was rather than just giving us an (admittedly) rushed backhalf of the season, and then open s8 up for NEW content.

No instead, he’s rehashing old storylines (gerrard), driving (literal) dead plotlines even further into the ground by creating new elements that there has never been any evidence of before (shannon), as well as actively giving the toxic fans he complained about the ammunition they need to continue being toxic (bt).

it feels like when he came back, he got this kind of god complex and is deciding to use 9-1-1 as his dollhouse for his wacky “masterpieces” that aren’t even that well thought out, and thinking that he needs to come up with these convoluted crazy plots to keep audiences interested, when most of the fandom have been vocal about how they miss the s2-4 era where it was just a procedural drama… not a hitchcock remake or an homage to classic b-movies.

i miss the energy of past seasons when yeah there was drama, but overall it was still a silly feel-good show; but then in s7 rather than emulating s1 and having it be a shorter reestablished character-focused season, he had it be both a character focus season (that decided to retcon and rewrite entire character traits of some people) as well as trying to cram in crazy drama plots (like listen, the cruise ship arc was decent, but it should have been focused on the storm/wave ONLY rather than the dumbass pirate plot that only took 10 minutes 💀).

so yeah, i’n trying to still remain positive and interact w headcanon/fanfiction content and posting the occasional “i hope we get this in s8”, but as far as actively speculating and teying to figure things out from photos or 2 second clips that will most likely only result in disappointment or frustration upon seeing the finished product, i’m not gonna hold my breath for anything.

Again if you wish to engage in spec and have fun with that, then by all means do! I just don’t have the mental capacity to do that healthily so i find it oftentimes more rewarding to keep my expectations low (especially after i got kinda spec crazy last season)

but also if you DO engage in spec, don’t try to gaslight and bully people, telling them that their interpretation is wrong just bc it’s not yours (meaning if someone is cautious about whether or not we’re getting buddie canon, don’t tell them they are delusional and insane bc ‘we absolutely 1000% are and there is no possibility we aren’t’ even tho it is very likely that we unfortunately won’t get buddie canon) i’ve had to make the decision to unfollow so many larger buddie blogs that i used to enjoy bc seeing the way they interact with fans’ concerns, low expectations, etc made me feel so icky bc they were beginning to sound like a certain part of the fandom (👀) and i don’t like that.

like i’m not going to go on someone’s post where they’re voicing their concerns and say “this is stupid that would never happen you’re delusional”

it’s one thing to be like “hey, i get that you may be stressed, but i look at it this way and that seems to help me” or to be like “good points, but if you look at this and this” but to actively make people feel stupid for having (objectively based on how s7 went) concerns about s8? that’s icky behavior to me idk

Thanks for the ask! Oh there are so many episodes I love a lot. Ones that come to mind though...

Moe Baby Blues is very high up my list. Of course, Moe, but also cuz it's genuinely super sweet to see him bond with Maggie.

Lots of earlier episodes I like a lot, one that sticks to mind a lot is Homer Alone. I love how everyone is characterized and Barney's good and silly in there as well.

Mr. Plow is iconic, and I love how it develops Barney and Homer as characters both independedly and seperately. One of my top favourites.

I really like The Way We Was, mostly because I love how it shows a little insight on Homer and Marge's high school years and it's just a very fun episode in general.

New Kid on the Block I enjoy too mostly because Laura is a super fun character and I wish she got to do more.

I Love Lisa is an episode I love a lot due to Ralph. He's one of the characters that got me into the show, I just think he's adorable and silly and I miss when he was just a clueless, innocent child. Very strong episode in general too and I love Wiggum too, he's so dumb lol.

Homer's Barbershop Quartet cuz it's just good. Rosebud also. I don't much care for most of A Star is Burns but Barney being a movie guy is something that speaks to me.

Lisa the Vegetarian I like a lot as a vegan and is the main reason I like Lisa as a character still when most people are divided on her. It's actually the most respectful depiction of vegetarianism in animation I've seen even if Lisa is hardly portrayed as being in the right or anything! It just feels authentic and I can see myself in there even if I avoid any animal product, not just meat. Gonna make seitan today actually hehe.

Tbh I also love whenever Moe gets to do anything cuz I love him so much. Wiggum also.

Of course there's also Days of Wine and D'ohses which is a huge episode for me, because of how it focuses on Barney and his struggle with alcoholism. I see a lot of myself in him as a character, mostly in the thing of nobody taking him seriously but then he goes and does the thing anyway. Also he's damn cute. It made me cry when I first saw it.

Less pleased with the later ep She Used To Be My Girl because we're meant to believe he had a deep meaningful relationship to this one-episode-wonder guest-star lady who just hogs the spotlight and all we get to see is one kissing session and that they proceed to have pity sex. Boo! If they're so insistent on not making him openly bi, I'd rather Barney get back with his art girlfriend Kako (or Yoko, for writers who forget they renamed her) tbh cuz it'd be cute.... wuhhhh I love Barney I want more of him all the time everywhere

Costume Cdramas I watched in 2023

My 2nd year with Chinese dramas as my love for costume drama continues.

The Blood of Youth (40 x 45min, filming started in Oct 2021, released Dec 2022) fun action drama with a good dose of comedy, not for people who want lots of romance because they are too busy (and the canon couples don't have enough chemistry, there I said it) to be making out. Good for bromance, ghost ships and/or ace character head canons. Xiao Se's fur collar wins fur collar of the year, Tang Lian is my blorbo of early 2023.

My Uncanny Destiny (24 x 30min, filmed in autumn 2021, released Jan 2023) My favorite comedy of the year. Don't get turned off by the toilet jokes, it's a gem that spoofs drama tropes, gives you a coherent plot, silliness, fun side characters, a ML that is not afraid of being silly and a FL that plays capable and silly well. This might be a low budget production but they put that money to work. Politics, cross-dressing, found family, sisterhood, enemies to lovers, third wheel bisexual who reminds me of Wen Kexing, over the top villain, himbo villain who works out shirtless all the time, it got it all.

Wulin Heroes (22 x 45min, filming started Nov 2020, released Jan 2023) I watched this for Li Hongyi and he is incredibly beautiful in this so props to his stylist and cinematographer. BUT it is a badly written and edited low budget romp. If you are not watching for any actor then do not bother. FL is bearable once you realize she is very much of a lets see where this goes kind of character. 2nd ML is a suffering captive prince turned whiny regent played by Zhu Zanjin. So if you want to see Jin GuangYao suffer, you might like his scenes?? It can totally be read as a throuple especially with the New Tales of Wulin Heroes mini series add on. The choppiness might also be a result of the dangai ban??

No Doubt in us (24 x 14min, 2021, donghua) saw this on netflix and it roped me in with the body switch trope. It's sufficiently entertaining. Though I didn't enjoy the animation style apart from the chibi scenes.)

Heaven Official's Blessing (season 1, 11 x 26min, 2020, Donghua) It's THAT story and the art style is so pretty. I haven't read the books yet but still got what was going on most of the time. Liked it a lot. Haven't watched the 2nd season yet)

The Journey of Chong Zi (40 x 45min, filming started in June 2021, released Feb 2023) This xianxia is a mess! But it gave Scorpion King Li Daikun another memorable role with being the FL's protector. Watching Wang Zhoucheng having a ball with his role was fun. Immortal turned demon Wan Jie is so handsome and tragic. It did draw me in but the main couple is just ick so every time they were apart it immediately got better. ML's refusal to take the antidote to ease his obsession was lmao, FL is naive but charming and her demon styling rocks (do not get the hate on the actress, she is selfmade and there are many bad pretty face actresses around but I guess antis attract antis). Oh and there is a bromance between two of Chong Zi's harem members

Till the End of the Moon (40 x 55min, started filming in Nov 2021, released April 2023) aka my brain rot drama of the year. Drawn in from episode 1 on. Bai Li and Luo Yunxi <3 Pian Ran, Ye Qingyu, Nian Baiyu and Si Ying. <3 I was spamming tumblr with my screenshots, it was a jolly good time to watch this epic tale of love and suffering and saving the world dilemma with a great cast, characters, costumes, sets and soundtrack with the cdrama ppl of tumblr. If this weren't too complicated for cdrama newbies I'd recommend it to all my friends. Do not skip the dream arc (I ended up liking it) or later stuff will make less sense. I'm still annoyed that we didn't get a good extra episode that wraps up some lose ends for the main side characters and that reunion of the main characters but Youku really went nah we better play it safe with censors not liking happy ends for morally grey characters.

My Queen (24 x 45min, filmed in 2020, released Jul 2021) An FL enters a romance adventure VR game drama that I watched because I needed some fluff between TtEotM episodes. Why pick this among any other sufficiently entertaining dramas that are probably better written and not as forgetable? Because I wanted to watch Hu Wei (rich nepo baby in The Blood of Youth) in another comedy role >_> and ridiculous overacting he did deliver

The Trust (30 x 45min, filmed early 2021, released Apr 2023) The life action adaptation of the manhua No doubt in us is based on. I dunno why I finished this, I guess I'm not a quitter and needed silly stuff to balance TtEotM angst. For some reason the director thought it would be a good idea to film this like a donghua and it is causing 2nd hand embarrassment. The ML cannot pull off being a woman in a man's body, not even a martial arts nerd like Xu Yu. Like Wulin Heroes it was filmed before the dangai ban but that didn't stop them from having at least two bromances.

Wanru's Journey (24 x 35min, filming started in Jun 2021, released May 2023) A mess. So IQIYI released this simply to ride on the wave of Ao Ruipeng's The Blood of Youth popularity. Because this got so chopped down because of the dangai ban and it probably wasn't good to begin with. Basically an actress transmigrates into a dangai screenplay and gets between the leads while also making money by writing fic about them (ok this is my reading but she DID release fic and drawings of them). Of course it takes an unnecessarily dramatic turn, instead of staying on the comedy side, cannot remember more of the plot, oops.

King is not Easy (20ep x 30min, released Aug 2017) I watched this for the body switch trope and Bai Lu. Nice to see her actual face before the fair skin filter got her, entertaining enough, badly written silly comedy with mind mindbogglingly contrived final 4 episodes. It's Bai Lu's drama debut so it's nice to see how far she got

Destined (40ep x 45min, filming started in Jun 2022, released June 2023) Highly enjoyable. Fell in love with Bai Jingting. What's not to love about a playboy getting put on his path by his wife and them becoming friends, sworn siblings and then lovers in the process? No this is actually about FL finding her thing (trade) and being wildly successful at it, then it's also political, revenge and more. The leads are extremely charming and have great chemistry (the drama suffers every time they are apart lbr) and the writing is good, though people are too perfect and I wasn't into the whole palace stuff.

My Journey to You (24 ep x 60min, filming started Dec 2022, released Sep 2023) Had me from episode 1 on. Made me buy IQIYI VIP so I can watch it in good quality. Fell in love with Zhang Linghe. Yu Shuxin needs to do all the wuxia while she is still fit. Why waste being able to do the splits on some modern drama? The director sent her mud wrestling and she went for it. Everyone knows she is pretty no need for her to be beautifully put together on screen 24/7. Love the style, the character introductions, the characters, the cast, the chemistry, the story, the way you expect something and something else is going on. While it started out gloomy and remained so for the most part, it surprised me with throwing in more comedy than I expected. The good old idle manchild gets thrown into a position of power story but it's a murderous martial arts clan against another murderous martial arts clan. It's giving you some information but often just enough for getting what's going on just to play with your expectations later, FUN! And I didn't even mention all the other characters because surprise! this is actually an ensemble drama with several intriguing characters. Do not expect for the two leads to be on screen all the time.

Hilarious Family (24ep x 45min, started filming in June 2022 (?), released Sept 2023) A fun ensemble comedy I watched for Jackie Li. A widow moves to another city to marry off her 4 daughters (a silly man-crazy one, a homely one, a scholar one and a tomboy one). No it's not Pride and Prejudice but yes of course this is a romcom and all women have a love interest. It kind of drops off later on tbh, but still good for the characters and side characters. The success of this in China hopefully means that Jackie Li will get to be getting more comedies to work in after the Queen Lau disaster and people having a problem with her artist alias in 2022.

Hello There (20ep x 30min, released Jan 2023) I stumbled on this on IQIYI while looking for a light fast watch that will let my brain relax. The ML's best acting moment is when he plays a wooden robot. FL is fun. There are some questionable scenes, standard low budget action comedy fare.

An Ancient Love Song (14ep x 30 min, released June 2023) A wonderfully written and executed grown up time traveling story, that shows once again that you don't need a big budget to tell a story that draws you in. Ended my palace politics blockade. All this time traveling and no reincarnation in sight. ;_;

Story of Kunning Palace (38ep x 45min, filming started in May 2022, released Nov 2023) Tieing 2nd with My Journey to You for brainrot drama of the year. The cinematography is questionable, the story is not for teaching perfect courting behavior but those two are just such a good cp in their awkward messy way. Their friends/sidekicks are fun too and bring some comedy to that story though crazy in love ML is serving some comedy too. Props to ZLH for actually trying to grasp the basics of playing qin and not just waving over the strings like other dramas deem it sufficient. Bai Lu is Bai Lu-ing, gathering her harem. Coming into this right after An Ancient Love Song the idea to defeat destiny this time around seemed hopeless to me but this is one of those they are good at making plans and they turn out mostly alright dramas. I hope those two's material for the next years is as good as the two dramas with them I watched in 2023, fingers crossed!

Currently watching: A Journey to Love and Taoism Grandmaster as well as 2/3 through a LbFaD rewatch that I started in summer.

I also watched a handful of modern dramas (made in Korea and Japan) and some mini-dramas, but that is for another post.

And yes my most watched actors are probably those uncles stuck in Hengdian, might look that up another day.

Just struggling over my feelings on DA:V

I really want to be excited, but somehow I feel like I've grown so cynical and skeptical over DA4.

It's not that I think it's inherently a bad game, but it's hard to gloss over the fact it's from Bioware. The same Bioware that treated their devs so poorly over the years. The same Bioware that had its games mired in production troubles and poor practices. I have nothing but disdain for the executive level there lmao.

Like, I'll probably still try it, but all that's definitely left a sour taste in my mouth.

Not sure how I feel about the shift in tone for the trailer. It feels like another decision to reel in as many people as they can with a snappy, fun scene. Not a bad thing, but a weird choice, I think? It feels like a different game. Not that DA isn't allowed to be silly as a treat, but I feel like even DA2 wasn't so goofy. It might be their choice in music throwing me off, though, idk. Their attempt to be broadly appealing is making me wary as a fan of the previous games. It's making me really weirdly cautious like. Do you understand your own games?? 😬I'd guess the actual content of the game is still the same darker tone, but the way it's being marketed is really jarring to me.

For positives, I am personally quite taken with Neve, Davrin (Who gets a BABY GRIFFON??), Lucanis and Emmrich at this point, though. I want to get to know them better! SCOUT HARDING??? Is what I'm most excited about. And seeing Minrathous?? ROMANCE CONTENT FOR EVERYONE??

But even then, I find it hard to get genuinely excited. Maybe I'll change my view once I actually give it a go, and I do actually want to enjoy it. I just don't trust the devs until I see t hings in action atp.

But in the end he has all of his friends that also go through hard times and are at his side! The timing in this vid is so much fun. It’s so energetic and full of shenanigans. And it makes me CACKLE. A must-see for Lower Decks fans!

Here It Goes Again by eruthros. Moby Dick, multi-source. Ishmael/Queequeg. Soooooo many different Moby Dick live action and animated shows and films! This is incredibly fun and a joy to see the sheer amount of times this story has been made for the screen. All to OK Go! #teamwhale 📝 Lots of notes at the vidder's journal about the Moby Dick adaptations.

I’m sorry this is one of my favorite kinds of things to vid and it’s even better when I get to see people make vids I love making cause i get to enjoy the fruits of the vid joy!! This is so funny and serious at the same time. crack treated seriously. Horror + comedy + seriousness = my jam. Amazing. I’m also admiring all the subtle musicality of the editing, too because this song is delicious with the drums and horn section. #TeamChristine

Teenagers by tafadhali for Dimension 20. Adventurers do whatever we want, with no consequence. THIS VID IS JOY. I couldn’t help but grin during this whole vid. The transitions are so much FUN and i love the way the vidder uses the miniatures throughout the vid with everyone’s reactions and silly faces. Oh what a great way to run with this song too.

Your Horoscope for Today by Josett_Arnauld. Game Changer. I don’t know this show at all but I believe it’s some kind of comedy/improv thing, judging by the antics here. And they're SUCH good antics. Comedy show + Weird Al = VID OTP! This is chaotic joy and silliness and a must-see for anyone who wants a dose of laughs. It’s so smartly timed and the transitions are so fun too.

The Only Way To See by BeatriceEagle. OMG it’s a vid about The Chocolate Guy!!!!! The song choice is so lovely tribute to the creative process. Om nom nom nom this is delicious editing.

I’m Going To Make You Love Me by periru3 and tafadhali, a Christine (1983) A DUET! FROM TWO VIDDERS! This is so fucking clever and funny and utterly fucking brilliant. This absolutely is smashing all my horror/humor buttons.

Everybody Talks by absternr. Much Ado About Nothing. Filmed stage productions! TO NEON TREES! The joy of theater, and these productions in particular! Some I recognized and others I hadn’t seen. Oh, it’s so much FUN. Delightful editing, great use of the song and I definitely ran to drop this vid link in in several of my Neon Trees and Shakespeare friends laps.

Caught in Hit and Run by turquoisetumult. Clue (1985). The vidder used Paula Abdul for the vid!! And I can’t emphasize enough how much fun this vid is. The editing, the comedy, the EDITING! It’s bouncy and grooving along with the physical comedy SO WELL.

I think what's often missed in the "why can't we play with genre and not write romance with an HEA?" conversation is that a lot of people defending the HEA are heavy romance readers who are very aware of the amount of money involved, and how the authors who pop off about wanting to be able to label their non-romance books romance are in fact... thinking of money.

Not solely money, of course. And that's not meant to be a critique--I'm a writer, I'd love to write books for a living someday. Money is important. I'm all about getting money for your work, and I've never begrudged anyone for writing to market, writing to catch a trend, whatever. Sometimes it can turn out badly, but if you want to make money it does have to happen (and often writers write to market, get big, and then write what they want... see Ali Hazelwood's Bride) and as long as you are writing a good product and enjoying yourself... I don't see the issue.

BUT. Romance is extremely commercially viable, and it has been especially for the last few years (though that hype has to die down at some point, dude--and I think the shift to romantasy is probably like, the last breath of the current boom, and romance will go back to its normal levels of popularity, which are still more commercially viable than many other genres). So when people (like me) see writers going "but why CAN'T I label my love story that doesn't have an HEA 'romance?"...

I mean. We know why lol. We aren't idiots. Why is it so important that your fantasy novel is placed on the romance shelves, in the romance categories on Amazon? Is it because these authors have a deep and abiding love of romance and just want to sit with the cool kids? Is it because their hearts beat for romance, and even though they wrote something that is not a romance (the thing their hearts beat for) they just are desperate for it to be there? Is it because they are SO DEDICATED TO THE CRAFT OF WRITING and SO EDGY that they MUST change genres, they MUST break CHAINS!!!!

No lol. It's because when you write a romance, you are much more likely to be recommended by the BookTok girlies reading ACOTAR (and say what you will.... those books do by and large, I believe, have HEAs for pretty much all of the core couples). You want that Fourth Wing bread. You are more likely to have access to an audience that spends more than other audiences do. You want access to an audience that also is, let us be real, less likely to be real misogynistic about your book than certain subsets of the fantasy readership.

And the thing is--sure. A lot of readers sincerely don't care. And good for you, why did your book need to be labeled a romance the--oh, wait. I see!

But the readers who do care and spend like, anywhere from $1.99-$35.00 on your book (look dude, I'm thinking about preordering a pretty copy of the next Kerri Mansicalco, and I feel a LOT BETTER about spending that money because she specifically referencing HEA's when announcing her adult titles, and I APPRECIATE THAT A LOT ACTUALLY) only to find out that it's not the thing they expected... It doesn't follow the ONE RULE you expected it to follow because of how it was marketed...

The only time I've kinda come close to having that happen is actually when I read that book the new Anne Hathaway Harry Styles fanfic movie is based on. I was verrrry new to going back into the romance genre, and I read it expecting, based off the premise, that this was a fun, maybe a little silly, sexy book about a woman falling in love with fake Harry Styles. And she does. And guess what? At the end they rather randomly and suddenly break up.

And it kinda sucked.

It's also going to suck to see that book marketed as a romance as the movie comes out, but there you go, I've spoiled you, HORROR OF HORRORS I let you know that the thing you think is gonna be a fun little romance with a happy ending.... is not.

But yeah dude, imagine if I'd spent ACOTAR or Fourth Wing or Princes of Envy money on that book. I already felt kinda dumb for spending what was probably $8ish? It was a kindle copy. I could've gotten a fry-less sandwich with that money, back then!

So yeah. I just think that a lot of people want to be very condescendingly high-minded about PUSHING GENRE BOUNDARIES. And it's like... dude. Do you not think I would get my head bitten off if I went "well, I want to write a fantasy novel, but I don't want there to be magic... I actually want it to be revealed that everything is just run by computers the whole time, and the magical spell was actually a hologram, and I want that to be shelved and sold as fantasy"?

Yeah. Because I'm basically tricking people out of their money, lmao.

1. Whatever My Wife Wants- husband!javi x wife!reader

This is a more recent one I wrote from a request from my sweet @honeyedmiller (hehe ily dev) based on the pictures of Pedro as Lucien (YUM). I know notes are so subjective, but I was not expecting that fic to blow up the way it did, and I was super proud of how it turned out 🥹

2. Cramps- Husband!Frankie x wife!reader

This was my first fic I ever wrote for Frankie. I was SO nervous to post bc I was a Javi exclusive girlie before this, and was so worried that people wouldn’t like it, or I wouldn’t get Frankie right, but I was really happy with the final product and flattered that so many people had nice things to say about it!!

3. It’s Never Too Late- Javier Peña x OFC

NTL will always be my pride and joy. This was the first fic I ever posted, and I have poured so much of my heart and soul into this silly lil story. Never ever EVER in a million years would I have thought it would have blown up in the way it did after deciding to post it on a whim, but I will be so forever thankful the I did. I will always be so proud of this story 💛 ily Javi and Osita

This might be controversial, I don't know. But I honestly don't like Dan's content post coming out nearly as much as pre-BIG. It used to be silly -yes- but relatable videos with one or two edgy jokes thrown in. Now it's ALL "I'm gay, horny and depressed and the world is ending but we also kind of deserve it" ... I know that last part has a lot to do with We're all doomed and Dystopia Daily - like the clue is in the names, I get it. But when it's all jokes like that... where is the lightheartedness? Where is the fun? Where is the relief from the problems of the world? Pre-BIG Dan at least had a better balance with that. Anyway, rant over. Hope it made sense.

mmm normally i'd ignore this kind of ask because it's nuanced and i don't want a dozen more hot takes in my inbox but i get that you're not just criticizing dan as a person but more his content shift so (many) thoughts under the cut:

i think first and foremost it's hard to gage dan as a content creators post BIG because the only content he's consistently made has been dystopia daily and wad (discounting gay & not proud because...you know...)

it's also hard to compare him to his content pre BIG since: 1) the video format is different- DD is a scripted persona heavy talk show format that's more commentary on culture than personal experiences 2) he's not supplementing DINOF with liveshows/regular social media posts + gaming channel videos that showed different (usually softer or more lighthearted) sides of dan and gave the audience a more well rounded perception of him as a person

which i think is one of the biggest ""issues"" people have with DD. it's not even necessarily the content itself (though i doubt anyone would say DD is their favorite content by any stretch), but the fact that the main source of perceiving dan is this heavily edited persona that's a bit too detached from real life daniel howell? because yeah like you said, we know he has a lighthearted side, we know he's actually very kind and thoughtful; however, dystopia daily is about the content, not dan as a person. the product isn't himself anymore which is a massive shift from old content. about dystopia daily as a concept- like i said, the reception from long time subscribers has been basically "i don't love this but i love you and am excited to see you again". it's not BAD it's just not what people watch dan for? it's definitely not something i would click on or enjoy from anyone else, but i love seeing dan in anything and supporting him. and some of it is good! there are some rewatches in there! but yeah if you didn't know him prior to DD you might assume this was just another ~generic angry rich white guy complaining about the world to be edgy~

"where's the fun"?- i will say that this year in particular we've seen more of dan's personality online! like the silly little instastories and tweets, he's sharing more about his life (like seriously who would have bet he'd post anything about their japan trip????), him in phil's video + the hair clip. and it's just like the biggest breath of fresh air because that's our dan!!! that laugh!! i know that guy!!! and i do feel like he's ready to incorporate letting people see more sides of him again after giving himself the space and boundaries to readjust after a massive life change. but there have still been bits of him this whole time! the few liveshows he did on tour were fun, him at the tour preshows was PEAK classic dan and he was truly the sweetest during his m&gs (seriously i cannot recommend enough checking out the preshow compilations playlist on youtube or meetdnp on twitter because it's just....god it's so fucking nice to see him being so fucking nice and remembering why he really is special). check out the idb instastories playlists because there are so many gems from the past couple years people forget about!!

i know it hit harder because dan is such a LIGHT and it felt like we lost it for awhile. he didn't lose the kindness or silliness or creativity, he's still dan! he's older and not the same person he was in 2014, but also who is? i'm not the same person i was in my 20s which is a great thing!

change can feel scary, but dan's entire genetic makeup didn't change. i totally get if DD isn't your thing and that is perfectly fine! but i will say if you're mourning the other sides of him, you've got plenty of examples that aren't current main channel videos. i do believe we'll be let back in even more soon though :)
