Naruto fanfic WIP (rant)

Inspired by Unlikely Mashing by Yawh on AO3 | Naruto AU | Nara Shikamaru/Uzumaki Naruto

In the fic that inspired this story, Naruto's body was shared by his and Omoi's (Karui's teammate, I believe). I thought the concept was really interesting and I originally wanted to rewrite it since the story is incomplete, but I realized I don't remember enough canon content and I'm not about to go rewatch Naruto, so, I just started a new one. 🤷🏾‍♀️

In this story (untitled for the moment), Naruto is sharing a body with the soul of a future version of himself rather than sharing with a separate person. Essentially, it's an attempted time-travel fix-it but written from the point of view of the Naruto living in the target time period (we'll call him Junior) and the time-travel doesn't work out well.

How I understand time-travel to work is like so. The time-travel jutsu Naruto innovates is a version of the Edo Tensei (this jutsu allowed the souls of the old Hokages to be summoned into empty vessels). The important takeaway is that the vessels were empty of any souls. In this story, future-Naruto (Senior) aims to time-travel to a period where his soul's contact with his body is weak (essentially, he wanted to travel to a period when he was on his deathbed). I should mention that the reason he's time-travelling is the same as seen in most fics, which is that the 4th Shinobi-War did not go in his favour.

Anyhoo, Senior decides to travel to a period during his training with Jiraiya. However, there's a change in the timeline that disrupts the process. Where in the original timeline, Sasuke doesn't kill Naruto at the Valley of the End, this time he does. He sticks his hand through Junior's chest and pulls out his heart (similar to Rin's death). Like metal to a magnet, Senior's soul is attracted to a vessel of his that is emptying out faster than the target vessel (at a certain point in time), faster than predicted. Senior lands further back in time than expected. Even worse, the Kurama trapped in that body rejects his soul. He suppresses the soul of Senior, essentially allowing both souls to co-exist in the same body. It isn't a smooth transition, however. Neither Naruto can properly contact each other, and Junior isn't exactly on speaking terms with Kurama. This disconnect causes some mental repercussions for Junior. He dreams about memories from Senior but they are more like nightmares to him. He is aware of changes to his personality and ways of thinking but he can't control nor understand them. As the symptoms continue, he comes to feel like an imposter in his own body. He continues to suffer through these symptoms throughout his training with Jiraiya until he returns to Konoha.

Jiraiya chalks up Junior's personality changes to adolescence and his willingness to get revenge on Sasuke. That's another difference in this timeline; Junior is aiming for revenge, not salvation.

When Naruto returns home, he rekindles his friendship with his classmates, most notably, with Shikamaru, who is curious enough about Naruto's change in personality to do something about it.

It's gonna take time...but Link is gonna be fine ♥ Zelda too.
