Excerpt: He nodded, clearly engrossed in the book and not me. I went back to the kitchen and got the mac and cheese prepared in the pan. I just needed about five minutes in the oven to get all the grated cheese gooey. The tenders were almost done as well.  I rose up after putting the pan in the oven and the overwhelming scent of ash filled my senses. I turned to find an unfamiliar alpha standing between me and the back door.  There was a knife in his gloved hand, he wore all black clothing. He was slightly taller than me, average build, and had long stringy blonde hair. His eyes were currently red.  “We don't have anything you want. It's best you leave before my Alpha smells you. He's our pack Alpha.” Usually, feral alphas are just looking for food and shelter, and the threat of another alpha is enough to send them packing. But he just snarled. It was the sting from a needle in my arm that made me realize he was a decoy. I spun on the one behind me, with the same all black clothes but his hair was neatly clipped, eyes a light brown but had a predatory smile. “Young omega like you shouldn't lie. We both know your parents aren't home. Come with us, we’ll leave the squirt alone.” “Poughkeepsie!” I yelled.  I knew Sam would hear me, and would know this meant trouble and he was a priority to me. I grabbed the first thing I could get, which was a kitchen knife.  “Dee…” Sam's voice trailed off at my name.  “Get him!” Brown Eyes commanded. “Run, Sam!” I yelled.  I lunged at the one close to me, I heard the front door open and shut and knew Sam would outrun the guy. He was the fastest kid at school.

How did you choose the current education goals and program? Was it something you were invested in already or something you wanted to study for some other reason?

Oh my god I had a long answer to this typed up and then I pressed the wrong button I guess and the entire site went white. Several times! Tumblr, what is wrong with you??

I've always been interested in these things, but it was only recently that I convinced myself I was allowed to study them. We have Misha to thank for that.

I chose my school because it was cheap and local and I didn't think I'd get in anywhere else. I'm glad for the contacts I've made here, but I think if I could go back, I'd apply to other places because educational prestige matters when pursuing a doctorate and an academic career. More on this in a second.

My original goal was to become a politician or a grassroots activist, so I was looking at law school and internships and political training programs (which do exist and in my state at least are a vital part of success for AFAB candidates) and the like. But...the longer I spent at school, the more clear it became to me that I love the academic world, so I started looking into getting a PhD. And, well...that led to the realization that this is genuinely what I want to do. I want to research and write about what makes society and politics tick (especially if I can blow up old sexist, racist, classist theory). I want to teach. And I want that damn PhD not because it's a notch on my accomplishments stick, but because it opens the door so I can do all of those things!

The problem is that both getting into a doctoral program AND getting a tenure-track position at a university afterward are super competitive goals. To even have a chance at getting that kind of position I have to graduate from a top 10 doctoral program, and to get into that kind of program I have to have a world class application. Neither my family nor the name of my school will give me any bonus points...but I can work hard to fill in the blanks myself.

Which is why I chose the specific programs I'm in I'm pursuing political science over sociology because the PoliSci department at my school offered the most support for my ambition: an undergrad thesis honors program, an honors society, a condensed thesis master's program that will allow me to graduate a year faster with a year less debt, and faculty who were instantly and enthusiastically supportive of my plans when I shared them. As much as I love sociology, that department offered none of these things. I may still choose that as my focus for my doctorate, however.

I also applied for and got into the peer mentor program at my school because it will give me experience doing exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life: educating, supporting, and empowering students.

So yeah! That's where I'm at. I'm sorry, I actually did try to keep this short...whoops.

Excerpt: 

I positioned Jones in front of me, letting her lead. Lafitte was bringing up the rear. It seemed odd that as soon as Jones cleared a section, flames would erupt from somewhere near her.

The walls, a light socket, even the ceiling! Added, if we weren’t close to the initial point it seemed the fire snaked its way across the floor toward us. As if it was seeking us out.

The initial point of fire was also changing colors indicating it was heating up, turning from red and orange to blues and whites. Eventually, Lafitte passed me and I hanged back but caught up. After they were outside I turned to do a final check, to make sure no one was calling out. What I noticed was trails of flames that were running across the floor. It was in areas we were all in, like someone had poured a trail for the flames to follow.

“Winchester?” Captain asked.

“Coming, Captain Hascum.” 

I was nearing the door when the voice rang out. Your fault.

I spun around expecting someone to be there, but the room was empty. Just white hot flames licking the ceiling, trailing across the floor, blazing through sofas and desks. A hand dropped on my shoulder, and I swear even with fifty pounds of weight, I jumped ten feet off the ground.

“Easy, Cher, it’s just me. You okay?”

“Yeah, yeah I’m fine. Let’s get the hell out of here.” 

Flames seemed to leap at Benny as we exited the building. 

“All clear.” I called.

Outside the building was pure chaos. There were more stations present now, each one having hoses on full. Four were focused on the roof up on ladders high above us. Chief Singer was also on the scene, he seemed to have taken over Captain Hascum’s command. I went right to him. He was giving out directions initially, so I turned to view the building and found flames were now leaping out the windows, engulfing the door we just came out of. But, I swore for a brief moment I saw a boy standing there.
