Book Review: Your Brain On Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross
Tumblr media
If you are one of those people who doubts the transformative power of the arts, then read this. If you already have an idea of the link that exists between the arts and your own personal well-being, then read this.
This book talks extensively about the physiological, psychological, and biological changes that experiencing art can have on the human body and psyche and it's fascinating! It will make you re-think how you interact with or implement it into your own life.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC in exchange for my review.
3/5 stars

okay okay okay okay okay the way this harlivy piece was released in Batman Chronicles Gallery #1 in 1997,, before the iconic Tango With Evil one by Alex Ross in 1999, and it's general pose similarities, but like instead of it being a one-sided romance with him possessively gripping her wrist rather than hold her hand,,, they're just actually holding each other
ya know?????

I also just wanna take a moment to appreciate the way Stjepan Šejić writes the Gotham City Sirens, particularly in how he utilizes BDSM. Because first off, he is so right, Selina would be a BDSM aficionado. Girl wears a leather suit and carries a whip and her boyfriend wears a spandex bat mask. That's her gimp lmao.
But also, it's such a unique and interesting lense to view them through. I particularly like the way he uses it to peak into Harley's psyche. It's just such a unique way to view the abuse. Harleen is all about the sexual nature of their relationship and how he pushes through and creates/fills a hole in her psyche no-one else can. It's just a simple addition to the already existing toxic addiction many abusive relationships have, yet it feels like it changes everything about this dynamic. He has a mini-comic, which you can find at eyesfullofscars' post here. I highly recommend reading it real quick. It's good and also you'll know what I'm talking about.
It's called Submissive, and the general plot is that Ivy goes to Selina to get advice on how to save Harley and she's told she needs to replace Joker in Harley's mind until she can get over him. And it's just such a crazy unique way of looking at it. Like it answers a lot of questions that didn't really need answers and just adds an extra level of depth to the characters and topic. And he has a lot of good utilizations of both dry and outright comedy.
Also, he's just, like, an actually good BDSM author. The damage E.L. James did to bondage fiction is so frustrating, it's so nice to read the works of someone who actually knows what they're talking about and can make it good, sexy, and just straight up cool and interesting. I have not yet read Sunstone, but I've heard from peers that it's pretty good so take that as you will.

While we are glad to see that this warning is shown on-screen at the beginning of RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ, and while we encourage more warnings like this to be featured, this is also far too late in the process to have seen the first photosensitivity warning. This should be warned about when purchasing a ticket online, arriving at the theater, scanning one's ticket or buying it at the theater, at the concession stand, outside of the auditorium, and during the pre-preview advertisements and at the end of the trailers. This warning only covers the end of the trailers, and hopefully, it gives photosensitive audiences enough time to leave the theater if they need to.
As a side note, the only reason we have not evaluated this film is because it is excluded from AMC A-List.
Image ID: A photo of a large black screen, watermarked by BC Epilepsy Society, with the screen reading: PHOTOSENSITIVITY WARNING: THIS FILM MAY NOT BE SAFE FOR PEOPLE WITH EPILEPSY. SOME LIGHTING IS USED DURING THIS FILM THAT MAY BE DISRUPTIVE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE SENSITIVE TO LIGHT.

Fall Special Edition Reading Challenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whoops! I've got a big TBR problem and a chunk of that is thanks to my love for special editions. The issue? I haven't read more than half of the SE's I own, and I can't keep allowing myself to purchase more when I don't even know if I like what I have. Plus I'm beyond out of space on my shelves and I think it's about time I start unhauling what I don't like instead of excusing their existence "because they're pretty."
So for this fall/autumn season, from September through November, I'm challenging myself to finish all 19 of my currently unread SE's and decide if they stay or if they go. Technically more books I preordered have arrived since taking these photos, and there are more to be delivered this fall, but I will not be forcing myself to include them.
Have you read any of these? If so, did you enjoy them? Are there some in here you want to read, but haven't had the chance yet?
Feel free to comment or tag the SE you like best just based on looks!

Apropo of a Reddit post, here is my casting for a Rat Grinders spinoff.
Kipperlilly Copperkettle: Aabria Iyengar. Loves being intense and bitchy in actual play.
Mary Ann Scuttle: Katie Marovich, obviously.
Ivy: Lily Du. Lily's niche on DropOut is being hot and mean, and she needs a real hot meanie to inhabit in the dome.
Oisin: Ify Nwadiwe.
Ruben Hopclap: Ruben is where it gets tricky. A lot of people on DropOut could play a good Ruben Hopclap. Grant could give us a great Ruben. Freddie Wong. Jacob Wysocki. Brian David Gilbert. All potential legendary Ruben Hopclaps.
In a sequel to Junior Year: Grant O Brien could be a great Buddy Dawn, but I'd really give this role to Ross Bryant.
In a prequel to Junior Year: Honestly, I think the best Lucy would be Oscar Montoya. I don't know why, but that feels right to me.
