HOT TAKE 🔥🔥🔥🔥  Izzy is a bad guy 🤯🤯🤯

I actually don’t know if this is technically a hot take tbh ✋🏼 I thought this was the generally held and understood take until recently when I saw people directly disputing it. Anyways, super steaming hot take; Lucius was entirely justified for refusing to do the chores Izzy told him to do. He wasn’t hired and he isn’t being paid to do manual labor, he’s the ship scribe, literally his entire job is to write down Stede’s exploits. And Izzy knows that, that’s why he specifically targeted Lucius to do all the unpleasant jobs no one wants to do. It’s a dig at how he thinks the job Stede hired Lucius to do isn’t valid because of how frivolous and stupid he finds it. Both bullying Lucius and Stede inherently in the process.

When Lucius argues with Izzy by telling him that Stede will be furious with him for wearing out his scribe’s fingers he’s not trying to be lazy and skip out of work by threatening to tell dad, Lucius’s job on the revenge is to write, and if because of Izzy’s petty intimidation tactics he was unable to do the job he was hired to do, Stede would be rightfully pissed.

A lot of people argue that Izzy was just trying to keep the ship running and get the crew to do their jobs, which I whole heartedly disagree with. If Izzy just wanted to get the barnacles cleaned off he could’ve gotten literally any other crew member to do it, specifically someone who was more equipped to do that sort of work. He chose Lucius specifically because Lucius’s job does not require him to do manual work and that pisses his traditionalist pirate self off. Izzy knew with the captains gone he’d finally have an opportunity to take that frustration out, he had no pure intentions. This was all very clearly illustrated in the show.

That’s why Lucius besting him by the end is so triumphant, because he didn’t let someone who was trying to bully him and invalidate his role on the revenge get him down. I’m sorry, but if you came out of that plot line sincerely believing Izzy was the unjust victim of his lazy coworkers you need a lesson in media compression, because it genuinely baffles me how you could’ve possibly come to that conclusion.

And just to be clear I love Izzy with my whole heart, so I totally get trying to see plot events from his perspective. But I feel like so many of you forgot that he’s a very bad person and one of the literal villains of the show. You’ve woobified him to such an unrecognizable point that you’re twisting the canon events of the show to make it seem like he’s a perfectly innocent and reasonable person. It’s so bewildering and embarrassing to see completely sincere “X character is actually the bad guy for being rude to Izzy” takes.

(This post was partly prompted by me seeing waaay too many mfs on my Twitter timeline say that Izzy is justified for the way he treats Stede because Stede is bitchy and calls him “Iggy” sometimes. As if that in anyway compares or justifies Izzy likening Stede to a dog that needs to be put down. The bad Lucius takes were simply the last straw).

I mean seriously, what happened to the Izzy enjoyers who like his character because of how deranged and evil he is? I’m so tired of so called villain fans who only enjoy villains when they find convoluted ways to justify and excuse their actions. Like, you guys know it’s ok to like bad fictional characters, right? There’s nothing wrong with that. Trying to find ways in which they’re actually not that bad isn’t doing anything, it’s just insulting to the message and intent of the source material and embarrassing to villain fans who actually enjoy the villains and not the woobified internet versions of them.

DIE Issue #2 Reread (Gillen & Hans)

I was pretty hooked on DIE from the concept alone, but this issue is what showed me the story itself would be something special. Sir Lane, the knight of kisses wraps up everything special about this comic to me into one, horrible little story. I love it. Let's dig in.

Art

Eyes are a big deal through the series, but they're an especially big deal in this issue. Hans is really killer at showing emotion through them here, the guilt Ash feels, the anger Sol & Matt feel, and of course the hate from Sir Lane.

I especially love her fight scenes. They move in broad strokes, not focused on any specific sequence of action, but the specific moments of victory and defeat that occur through the fight.

That's important when you're dealing with a cast as large and unique as the party. Everyone has these super powerful attacks with over the top video-game flairs, so she has to make sure to draw your eye with color and shapes.

I especially like how red is used in this scene, a strong color associated with violent magic from just about everyone. Historically, I've associated the red licks of fire with Ash and her dictator powers, but I think that applies to all members of the party here. Perhaps we are meant to see red as the color of violent magic? Or perhaps just the party's magic?

Isabelle's talks with her gods are another standout for me. These panels are always so interesting, I love to see how each one speaks, how they treat Izzy, and how little she seems to care about them. She keeps her back to them, refuses to meet their eye, but is still shadowed in most interactions. It also looks like a persona summoning scene, which is fun to me.

A special shout out to the cartoonish look of Ash's memory of Sir Lane. So idealized & flat, the perfect way to do this childhood flashback. Everything was so much simpler then... NOT. We'll get into it further on.

Actually, why wait?

This is up there for my favorite moments in the comic. Like I said, this is where I realized what DIE was doing—this is a story about careless people ruining their lives and the lives of others for the sake of "fantasy." And it's a story about the logical conclusions of those fantasies crawling back to you and covering you with awful worms.

What's incredible is the conciseness here. In just 8 panels over 2 pages, we see the entire tragedy. Sir Lane, the Angrian knight of kisses, was a fling for young Ash back in the 90s. Maybe even her first fling as herself:

It's an exciting thing for her, to be kissed as a woman. To be wanted as a woman. But Ash barely remembers this guy. She does recall their last meeting—he joked he wouldn't rest until he saw her again, asked her to use her power to make it true. She did. He died. He never rested. His eyes rotted. A lover's joke became a never-ending curse.

We see here how careless Ash has been with a very serious power. As the Dictator class, she can speak things & feelings into being. If she isn't careful, this power will rewrite reality to make her words true. Sir Lane is only the first casualty of this we see. What other horrors are waiting for them in this world, still reeling from the fickle whims of teenage demigods?

House Rules & The Fallen

Isabelle tells us the party takes this world seriously. They can't know how "real" Die is, so they have to treat it like it is real.

I don't think anyone in this party is actually playing this way though. The proceeding bit with Sir Lane is strong evidence against it, but even just moments before this interaction, we have the party going all out on the Fallen and this nice little explanation from Ash:

You know, some people would call me a trap with legs, but I hope there'd still be moral question to killing me. Anyway.

I was really mad the first time I read this, back in 2018. Orc discourse wouldn't hit its stride for a few more years, but even then I found it frustrating. If we're supposed to believe that these characters are treating Die as real, why are the Fallen different? Are "orcs" not people? Are they not conscious? Perhaps are used as unquestionable fodder in early D&D and LOTR, major influences on DIE, but I feel like we're past that now. The easy answer for the moment is that they are more like zombies than orcs, but that's still not satisfying for me. This whole scene appears to be a weirdly out of place statement for the comic.

Let's hold onto that feeling of dissonance—it feels bad for a reason. Without spoiling too much, Ash & the party's knowledge of the Fallen is pretty sparse at this point. They know them as hungry, diseased automatons. There's a lot more to them. A lot more. As we'll find later, this statement is just wrong.

This is a really important theme for the comic: The party is often wrong in what they think and what they do. Their attitude as 90s gamers will keep butting heads against more modern TTRPG ideas. This past thoughts/present thoughts conflict will continue not just with the Fallen, but in pretty much every aspect of the story.

So What's Up With Sol?

You've gotta love this guy—the dramatics, the get up, the ambush, it's all classic GM shit. Look, he's even having to stop himself from spoiling things here, he's just so excited to see his friends again!

Okay, maybe there's something a little worse than that going on here. Sol is (obviously) a really bad friend here. He's stating that he wants to bring the party back for another game—the war is over, now we're here for fun.

Ash reads this differently. She sees him as furious, furious beyond the point of sanity.

The other players have their own ideas. Isabelle, it seems, might be taking Sol at his word, but she's trying to talk him down. Matt is, pretty rightfully, furious. He's been brought out of his normal life into the worst place in the world. Angela bargains. Maybe she thinks Sol is crazy enough to fall for it.

So what's really going on here? Why did Sol bring them back, why now? We don't get an exact answer here, but I don't think it's anything put forth in this scene. Or maybe a bit of all of it. We'll learn more the next time we see Sol.

Other Thoughts

Well, here we go. We've got our quest, we've got a combat in, even some roleplay. A pretty good first session! I do like how these early bits are all structured like standard D&D sessions.

I already gushed a bit about the art in this issue's action scene, but I also want to call out the way Ash's narration works there too. Everyone's role in the party and their powers are very clear. It's a good set piece to show what everyone can do and why they're cool.

If you're considering reading DIE, I'd try to get through at least these two issues. If you like the tone and the characters, keep going! It just gets better from here.

In fact... next issue introduces one of my favorite bits of world-building in the series... but we'll save that for later.

I am still thinking a bit about that Izzy Hands discourse and like. It's mostly funny they blocked me in like the shortest time frame possible. But also they explicitly reblogged my addition to say I hadn't added anything worthwhile and announce I would be blocked for bad takes crimes before doing so.

And I do think I offered a worthwhile lens of interpretation?

If you write thousands of words on how a character's actions and words show he's a violent, racist, homophobic person who is complex but overall bad, and claim his clearly bad actions / words are being uniquely minimized by fandom to grant him unearned sympathy, then the premise of your whole argument is grounded in his actions meaning what you say they mean. You aren't wrong for doing this - most meta is written on this kind of invisible presumption - but it is a thing. You have defined how Izzy is intended to be viewed. And in this case that means if I ask in (admittedly lengthy) response "Ok, but if this is the message they wanted to send instead of the nuanced read you're criticizing, then why didn't they make him worse in a way that would better serve said message?" well that is a very legitimate question.

Izzy isn't a person - he's a character in a narrative. The question of why he isn't a sadist when sadism might make a point better is a fair question. Why was he part of a narrative parallel if they didn't intend a parallel? Why was he introduced doing X when they could have done Y? He's being written on a blank page. If the alternative option to what they could have done with him is feasible in the show's context, it is worthwhile to ask why they didn't do that instead.

I dont mean to be impolite, and I'm not sending this as an attack by any means, but since you're aware of the term 'narc abuse' contributing to the stigma of NPD, why do you prefer to use that term rather than using the term 'emotional abuse' (which 'narc abuse' is most often described). You agreed with the anon proposing there is no alternative when there is: emotional abuse. I dont understand. It's literally emotional abuse. :(

As a comparison, I, as a schizospec person, would be hurt and most definitely be aware of it being a contribution to stigma, if someone called emotional abuse perpetuated by a schizospec person, 'schizo abuse' or 'schizophrenic abuse' or something alike; as both Schizophrenia and NPD are highly stigmatized, I made that comparison. I'm not sure why you'd be content with using such a term. I'm not really... upset, mind you, I'm detatched... but awfully confused. (Especially at the mindset behind this & your actions, haha, social skills are not my forté)

By the way, when did the experiment end and what did you do with the data? And, what now? What comes of everything? I recall surveys being sent out at one point.

Please scroll back and view the discourse for the last few days. You know…the discourse to which you’re replying, I make my point very clearly in every single post on the topic. Strange that you didn’t catch it.

Here it is again: emotional abuse is a very broad term for an entire array of behavior patterns. Narcissistic abuse is a specific pattern of both emotional and potentially physical abuse. Emotional abuse is not specific enough. If we want to stop the thing, we must name it, and in the case of narcissists, they like to conceal their actions and deny treatment.

One facet of both NPD and narcissistic behavior, is that they refuse to take accountability for the outcomes of their behavior—behaviors that can only be treated if recognized. So by calling it emotional abuse, you’re in fact, playing directly into their version of events and supporting their delusions that they are not responsible. It negates their culpability for their specific pattern of behavior. It feeds into their poor mental health.

When it comes to mental health, there is a line in the sand. Narcissists are recognized by the harm they do. A man can beat his wife because he is mentally ill. Doesn’t make the action acceptable. If we call him a wife beater, are we stigmatizing his mental illness or are we naming his actions and forcing him to take accountability? Are we going to pat him on the head and say “it’s alright, your illness did it to you”? No. We are going to call his abuse what it is, and recognize that as a society, negative behaviors ought to have a negative stigma attached.

Narcissists play games. They love to try and get their victims to trip up or second guess themselves. Gaslighting and manipulating the truth are one of their most favored types of abuse. Like this carefully constructed ask, for example, containing careful clues as to how you missed my point the first ten times (“whoops I’ve been gone! What happened to the surveys? My heavens when did you end the experiment that you’ve been talking about ending since March of last year! *gasp*). This ask, written ostensibly by someone who cares so very deeply about this issue and my opinion on it, using sympathetic language and a personal story about how their own very different mental illness is stigmatized—something that has nothing to do with this particular issue—just pops into my ask box after somehow completely ignoring the point I have made in every single post on this issue, that asks me the same question again, like someone trying to bait me into “slipping up” or someone who wants to mitigate the abuse that narcissists do. This ask which just so happens to have appeared in my ask box after both Izzy and an “anonymous proxy server” visit my blog, go to the main page directly, and then click my ask box link.

Fascinating coincidence.

Narcissistic abuse is a specific thing. Social media creates a popularity culture, this combined with anonymity creates an ideal circumstance for narcissism to evince itself. Narcissists often evidence superficial charm and charisma and flourish in social media environments, and so often, the abuse that appears in online space matches narcissistic abuse patterns extremely easily.

Digimon Adventure tri.~ “Kokuhaku” [“Confession”] (Movie #3) featuring Characters: Koushiro[u] Izumi [Koushiro “Izzy” Izumi in US dub] (+relationship with) [+Taichi Yagami]; and how even their smallest “moments” affect his entire character arc + IMPORTANT DIALOGUES + Character Analysis + Potential Parallels to Past Canon

(Scene #1) - Koushiro confronts Taichi about going to see the Digimon; Taichi sadly shakes his head, places a half-hearted ‘consoling’ hand on Koushiro’s shoulder, and turns to leave. Koushiro is asking questions at the start and yelling after Taichi as he leaves (likely, “Taichi-san!!!”) but Koushiro’s voice cannot be heard.

(Scene #2) After hearing the blow from Hikari’s whistle (blown at this time by Tokomon, though Nyaromon owns it) {after Hikari gave it permanently to Tailmon at the end of Adventure}; the sound of which travelled across the worlds and reached them.

I’ve had some poems published before (it was with entering a poetry contest), I have surprisingly good balance, my brain is not properly awake/functioning until 10am which has led to me almost using soap as toothpaste a few times too many, I have a birthmark on my finger (bonus: it sorta changes color/how noticeable it is depending on how hot or cold I am lol, i call it a mini thermometer cause of this), apparently Lion King was my Disney movie obsession as a kid...oh and I have a certificate in cryptozoology lolz

Sogo i heavily relate to as well cause he’s,,,very nice and hides his own feelings, putting others before himself (but when right buttons get pushed, he can be scary lol) so yeah, those two

Part of me hate-read the stories, part of me love them as it I’m addicted to them

Maryse and Izzy don’t exist in vacuum. You said Maryse basically did the opposite of what was did to her, i.e. she prioritised Izzy over Alec. I can’t help but remember that somehow Alec despite literally being the sniper of the group never killed a demon yet a mundane boy who took a couple of summer camp lessons did it on the first try. That tells me nothing good about Alec’s training. So, in your headcanon Maryse is directly responsible for her son’s lacking fighting skills bc she was busy doting on her daughter. Furthermore, you basically admit that Maryse 1) prioritised her other children over Alec, 2) neglected Alec, and 3) wasn’t supportive before he came out yet conclude she’s not responsible for Alec’s feeling inferior or uncomfortable in the place that’s supposed to be his home? Interesting that. Another thing is that you pointed out Alec being afraid of his sexuality. And who’s fault was that? It’s either his parents’, one of whom was casually homophobic on daily basis and another LET him, or Alec homophobia existed only in Alec’s silly head. I seriously doubt think it the letter one. As to her being supportive after, it’s funny you mention it as a headcanon. Reread that quote about the paper cuts, it’s the opposite. Why wouldn’t Alec mention her standing up for him? The thing is all straight people are complicit in homophobia at least to some extent. Maryse is not an exception. Neither is Jace or Izzy at times but it’s a separate discussion. Anyway, you don’t need to make all these mental gymnastics to excuse Maryse’s lack of interest in Alec for most his life. Just say she wasn’t a great mom to him but she’s decided to change. Sadly, most of her character development happened off page.

Ah shit. Here we go again. 

1. My head canon DID not mean that Maryse depriortized Alec (or Jace). It meant that Maryse did not want her approach to be gendered - where Izzy would become less of a priority. So, just because of Maryse helped Izzy train and supported her to become a great fighter, it did not mean that she neglected other children. 

1.1 Please do keep in mind that ALL of the above is a headcanon. For all we know, Maryse (and Robert) trained none of their kids and it could have just been Hodge. But I'll say it again, what I meant was that IF Maryse had trained the kids, she would not have seen Izzy has someone who didn’t deserve to be trained. That is what I meant. I know that is not what you interpreted. So, I will not hold my responsible for your misinterpretation. 

2. The fact that Alec hadn't killed anyone before CoB says NOTHING about his training and everything about his personality. It is mentioned in the books that Alec was not into offence, but into defence - because he was used to having Izzy’s and Jace’s backs. So, while Izzy and Jace attacked/killed demons, Alec made sure they were safe. This does not mean he is a bad fighter or lacked training. I don’t know how you came to that conclusion, but please do refer to the books for further explanation. 

3. a) I DID NOT say Maryse prioritised other children over Alec b) I DID NOT say she “neglected Alec” specially, but only her responsibility as her mother as she was out of the institute c) I still do believe that everything Alec felt cannot be pinned down to his parents or in his occasion his mother. I agree that parental influence very much impact a child’s self-esteem but saying that is why he was the way he was is stretching it a little thin, don’t you think?

4. Please be extremely careful when you make claims such as “The thing is all straight people are complicit in homophobia at least to some extent.” While homophobia is very real and straight people can be awful, generalising a trait to an entire community is the definition of stereotyping. 

ALL of the above is about tsc. It’s about Maryse and Alec and the Lightwoods. I understand that you are entitled to your own opinion and you are allowed to share it. I also understand that one single character can be perceived in completely two different ways depending on our different personal experiences. 

So, While you may feel that Maryse has a horrible mother or a neglectful one, please note that I am in no way obligated to share your views. Maybe I prefer to focus on Maryse’s overall personality as a mother than on what you seem to be fixating. Or maybe I just have really low standards of what it means to be a good mother. Whatever reason you would like to assume, please do so. But I would like to respectfully disagree. I don’t have to “just say she wasn’t a great mom to him but she’s decided to change” because I don’t subscribe to that point of view.

Pyskobilly - The Paron Saint of Nothing - Album Review

From the off let me declare a conflict of interest here. I was sold on this album just by reading the title. It reminds me of a line from ‘how soon is now’ (The Smiths).“I am the son and heir of nothing in particular” (1984). There was that glorious period in our lives when they and Morrissey could do very little wrong. Recent declarations by Mozzer render him obsolete, politically, these days. Though, his influence in terms of song writing reaches far beyond the discourse concerning his dodgy dealings with ‘For Britain’. Whilst The Patron Saint of Nothing may doff its cap in the general direction of The Smiths that is where all further comparison ends.

Psykobilly is the alter ego of one Willian Newton originating from the North East until the age of twenty five, he now resides in Gloucestershire. Not that you can hear any of the geographical locations within the sound or feel of the tracks. The album is more steeped in a variety of influences, both international and UK, therefore whilst there are some real 'heart on the sleeve moments' when considering musical reference points, he and the album are original in both substance and depth.

The album artwork, feel s slightly claustrophobic and the imagery leads one to believe that highways and travel will be central themes within the piece. A black and white picture of a road dragging the eye into a disappearing point is always going to score big. Throw in what looks like a massive storm cloud in the background and you get the sense of foreboding. The song titles compliment the mood, so imagine the shock and surprise of (Kerouac Said) Everything’s Fine (track one). It sounds like a combination of Roy Woods Wizzard, Danny Wilson, the former pop combo from Dundee that scored a massive hit with ‘Mary’s Prayer’ and Sheffield troubadour, Richard Hawley. The whole album had me listening for differing musical pointers and influences, and they are there. I found myself leaning into the speaker trying fathom who certain melodies and hooks remind me of? That is the sign of something special I think? Ultimately though you arrive at the conclusion that this, well this is none other than Psykobilly.

The song feels huge in terms of production. It has everything thrown at it, and yes that would include the kitchen sink, but what a glorious opener. Think ‘angel fingers’ by Wizzard with Lou Reed at the helm and you get the picture. It is massive and you will find yourself singing along. It is impossible not to. ‘Kerouac’ is both infectious and has magnetism by the bucket load. It has a tangible pop edge to it and when Shirley Manson of the band Garbage said “I love pop music, who doesn’t?” she could have been directly referencing ‘Kerouac’.

Newton claims on his Instagram page to be songwriter, guitarist and ‘reluctant vocalist’. This then plays out on the track ‘Imposter Syndrome’. There is something rather beautiful in the swooning melodies and backing vocal provided by Izzy Sorrell and ‘our Bill’. However the lead vocal feels restrained, like something is being held back. Honestly you want the vocal to lift and soar particularly given the theme of the track. This is not a criticism merely that more would have really upped the dynamic and extended the vocal delivery to make it more urgent and needy. I love urgent and needy by the way.

On ‘Ballad Of An Exile’ there are sonic references to Wizzard again and the track feels like something that Bradfordian Brit Popsters Ultrasound could have written and produced. It is utterly gorgeous. The themes of lovely and gorgeous absolutely play out on all the remaining songs to differing degrees and for very different reasons. The string section on ‘Sacred Veil’ is beautiful and sublime. You could lose yourself in the majesty of the soundscape. I definitely did.

Considering this is the second album from William it stands well, capturing a moment in the chronology of Psyksobilly and its development. It is so much more than that though as tracks like ‘Burying the dead’ and ‘Thrill U Kill U’ testify.

‘Thrill’ is an absolute departure from the other songs and it is magnificent. We revist the restrained nature of the vocal delivery as it feels like it is missing a ‘big shouty’ verse and the chorus equally needs a lift as I found myself hollering at the top of my voice in a sing along style.

That said I quite unexpectedly was spinning and pirouetting in my tiny space and whilst Astaire might offer “it takes time to get a dance right, to create something memorable” what Bill has created is something in terms of melody and hook that has an ear worm quality to it and that you won’t forget. For the record I don’t really dance to songs. I had imbibed no illegal/legal substances to get me up from the chair. I simply couldn’t sit there listening as my feet were tapping and legs followed fairly quickly. I say dance, of course I mean a random series of movements that defy explanation. The experimentation with sound on this song really surprises the listener and it feels like a complete move in an opposite direction from the other songs on the album, sort of Kraftwerk meets Marc Bolan.

The album closer ‘You’re Not Coming Back From This’ evidences that Bill has no imposter syndrome. The vocals soar and drive in ways that suggest underneath the baritone delivery on the other songs there is a screaming rock God in attendance, he just needs unleashing. The song is the perfect ending and when Bill sings on the middle eight of the track ‘you’ve lost control so let it go, you’re in a hole so just stop digging, who you kidding LET IT GO” the sustain is so emotive and powerful, the note perfect, I collapsed exhausted from the emotional connection I felt and cried. You’ll find other tunes and songs here but you won’t find better. It is the stand out track on an album of stand outs.

So if you want something a little different then this might be the album for you. It has all the qualities and charisma that great pop music should have whilst at the same time not being formulaic or trite. It feels sincere and driven by a real desire to offer a very personal view into a world of the ‘other’ or ‘outsider.

Here is the other stuff you need to know, I think. The album was released on February 8th 2021 and was recorded at Caretaker Studios. The arrangements, production and knob twiddling are handled and crafted by the rather talented and clever Phil Sorrell. His ear for sound really compliments Psykobilly. Some folk subscribe to the idea that ‘less is more’ in terms of production. The overall lesson here is more can be rather lovely and beautiful in the right hands. This is a glorious testimony to finding the right person/people to work with and Psykobilly has found the right people to generate ideas, tunes and melodies to fill stadiums. I have every part of my anatomy crossed and hope the albums finds space and places to be heard as it has the potential to be massive. Buy this album you won’t regret it.

The Rock And Roll Fool - April 2021

         𝔬𝔲𝔱 𝔬𝔣 𝔥𝔢𝔩𝔩. Oh hell yeh! Question time! I threw your answers down below a lil read more because I’m what the kids like to call?? A rambler.

1). What does your writing process look like?

A mess?? Lmao nah;;; So, honestly it depends on what I’m writing, how long I’m going to be continuing the story revolving around it, and what my current mood is. In general, I am a person who has a hard time sticking to one particular style or approach because I just get bored of it a lot. I find it a lot of fun to come at writing in many different ways and I’ve found that it’s helped me really explore what I do and don’t like for each genre or character that I attempt to tackle.

That being said, though, I tend to have at least a couple consistencies. Basically, when I’m writing replies, the most important questions I ask myself tend to be;

What is my character’s reaction to what just happened?

What have I written that actively engages the other writer and/or their character?

Have I actually described the scene or merely provided dialogue?

Will this thread carry for at least two more replies and, if not, should I end it or can I add something to make it keep going?

I’ll go ahead and give you some examples using writing that I’ve previously written to paint what I mean with each of them. For the first point, that’s the one that most people I’ve seen tend to have the best grip on, obviously. People who do roleplay tend to really know their own characters and can write them really compellingly. Most of the time, this part of the writing comes from the other player setting up a question or scenario and my character basically engaging with it. Typically, reactions tend to be the first thing I’ll actually be the first thing I put into a reply and I think that they are really important to keeping a fluid transition from one character to the next. 

In the above example, you can kinda see what I’m talking about. Basically, Izzy made Gwen say something and Billy here gave a very basic response to it. Most of the time, I find dialogue or verbal responses are the best because usually the other character should pick up on them, but I like mixing in physical reactions and more internal monologues alongside those verbal responses. Sometimes, if two characters are in tune enough with each other, it actually can be really rad to get away with only physical reactions and internal dialogues, but that often requires a certain connection and history between characters to make accurate conclusions about what might be going through their head. Here is a great example between one of my mains and Nay from my old blog.

Basically, Nay notices that Oswald is probably getting emotional over the fact they’re standing in front of this grave and looks down to get a better idea of who Oswald is getting so upset over. Oswald then follows his line of sight to the headstones, themselves. It’s a more sad scene, so not only is the lack of actual verbal responses very fun to play with, it’s also much more appropriate for the tone of the thread. This is something I love to try and play with a lot, but I avoid doing it as much with people who I have not already threaded with a few times.

After that, I then have to try to actively engage the other writer or create an opportunity for them to add to the thread as well. Especially when writing with someone new or for whom you may not have an immediate chemistry with, it becomes very important to throw them a bone, so I usually will do this as a follow up. I personally don’t love using questions to carry a thread, but it can be a good way to give an explicit indication of how the other person can contribute to it and it can be a lot more comfortable for people who are new to interacting with me and may be hesitant to just throw new ideas at me without having an extensive conversation about it. Here is an example where Naomasa responded to a question that Oboro poses and interacts with a nonverbal. 

These first two bullets are what I usually consider the meat of the reply, so the most work is put into them. Everything else is filler and tends to be what actually makes the replies prettier and more interesting. In many cases, adding the last two can even happen naturally when you are trying to come up with ways to do the former, but it’s still something I keep in mind to look out for when I’m writing. Of the four points, I think that the one I probably struggle with the most is the one that revolves around describing the scene and I think that has been what’s kept me from reaching that multi-para/novella goal that I really wanna be able to do when writing threads, but I’ve been putting in more work to try and get on top of that one. 

The final point is basically just thinking about what I can add to try and keep a thread engaging. This is when I really tend to bring in that plot and start advancing it. Introducing a conflict or a new activity in the scene that might not have otherwise been relevant before now can really revive a thread and I tend to do that a lot if I feel like a thread is dying out too quickly. Sometimes it takes, sometimes it doesn’t but it’s basically just my way of jumpstarting an interaction I feel like didn’t have enough substance to get off the ground in the first place. The example for this one is between Naomasa and Jasper - Yes, I know it’s the same person, again, but it’s because Fabgen is ridiculously good at doing the whole “yes and” thing and really we should all just take some time to appreciate them - in which the two of them are both responding to a crisis of some kind. I had felt the nature of the thread hadn’t given them a concrete way to continue to interact with each other, so I made up a random conflict that they both could work! In this case, it was some random kid running into danger.

After ALL of that, basically the last thing I tend to do for a thread is proofread and format. In a perfect world, I’d actually do the whole proofreading thing more often, but lmao nah. Basically, tldr, my writing process when doing threads is:

1). Respond to what the other person says. 2). Give them something to respond to. 3). Introduce a new plot point as necessary. 4). Fill in scene details and revise as necessary.

If you read back on my old threads, you’ll probably notice most of them follow this linear outline. Sometimes I’ll switch a couple things around, but 95% of the time you can literally cut my replies pretty into these parts without too much trouble. Also yall should go check out the people in these example threads because they’re all very talented and worth interacting with!! 

13). What do you look for in an RP partner?

Hmm.... An excellent question let’s see...

Typically, these are things that make or break rp relationships:

Have concise rules/ooc pages that includes information such as their name, their pronouns, their age and their triggers. For certain fandoms, I also tend to look for stances on certain major discourse points.

Have the ability to para or multi-para threads and 3rd person POV. We don’t have to always do this, but I do really prefer this kind of RP.

Have the ability to participate in joke/crack posting

Read my character info or at least my rules before interacting with me. I know they are long and tedious and that I tend to ramble, but there are some important things in there that may vastly differ from many other people in the RPC and it’s important to me that everyone takes those things into account when engaging with me.

Have discord for OOC conversations and extended plotting or, at the very least, be comfortable chatting regularly via IM.

Follow me. It’s not necessary to interact with me and I 100% will interact with people who are not mutuals, but I typically tend to assume others around me are mutuals only regardless of whether or not they actually are and it’ll often put most of the responsibility on the other person to come interact with me if they want to thread.

I tend to main with people who will have OOC conversations with me about our characters and who are willing to adapt to fit into the settings / verses which I have already created for my characters. I am always seeking out familial relationships of ANY kind and will usually be quick to main people who do these kinds of threads with me. I do have ships for many of my characters that I tend to indulge in, but my mains tend to be people who actually get me to start shipping something because the characters just ended up vibing so well. I actually really love shipping my bi male characters with women, but there just really aren’t enough ladies in any of the RPCs to have lasting ships ;;y;;, so if we are able to get one going, I’d probably consider maining with ya’ll

I tend to like people who like continuous threads and verse building. I tend to like people who don’t mind having a million unfinished threads. I tend to gravitate to people who do formatting and icons, but I do not require it. I tend to shy away from people who are too self-concious about doubles or who tend to prefer being exclusive. 

Overall, I’m open to at least trying to rp with everyone! And I’ve definitely formed lasting friendships with people who did not meet many of this criteria, but in terms of what I look for this is probably a pretty good list.

X-Force Vol 5 #7

The X-Force Discourse

TL;DR Synopsis:

While X-Force waits as Deathlok tries to reverse engineer the time portal, Kid Cable is now a prisoner of Kid Stryfe. With a power inhibitor on, he’s rapidly getting taken over by the TO Virus, but before then, Kid Stryfe wants him to witness the death of all his peeps. Rachel goes from being a hound to being under the control of those creepy-ass fucking blob things Kid Strife controls I guess? Anyway point being they use her as a trap for all the Askani to walk into a slaughter. And now as it turns out, all the portal needed to work was for Boom-Boom to blow up the engine, so X-Force is heading into the future. 

Things I like About This Issue: (for the first time, a lot)

So like, did someone ghostwrite this? Or is Brisson actually getting an understanding of these characters? This is the first issue where I’m really feeling them all and I think I need to pinch myself.

Jimmy just all around was so good this time??? I adored the scene between him and Tabitha and was beside myself over finally getting to see how truly sweet he is, and not just an Angry Tough Dude. When he’s like “you gotta have faith things will be okay,” “we kicked some fascist butt” and then asks Tabs to bring him another cheesy romance book... 💯💯💯 (and the book says it’s by Brisson, LOL)

His healing factor was mentioned, too! But just clarified to for some reason not be working well with whatever purple energy guy did. I mean, I’ll take it.

Tabitha has so much sapphic energy in this issue, walking around in her sweat pants with her shirt tucked in and sneakers, her poses...

This woman is a gay and there’s nothing you can do about it.

On par with the conversation between James and Tabitha though, is the conversation between Sam and Shatterstar while they’re busy taking some guys out. Well, Shatterstar takes them out. Sam’s still big on just nyooming around without doing anything, but I don’t care because we get another poke at Sam’s absentness with Izzy and Joshie. “I ain’t been around as much as I should” holds more weight to it than I still think he’s been fully open about.  Also like, damn, Shatterstar talking about how he’s only been around cause fighting is a distraction from dealing with Rictor’s death? A) I keep forgetting that most of the mutants are “dead” at the moment a la Age of X-Man, and B) break my heart why don’t you? I’m also glad he hasn’t suddenly changed his mind about Kid Cable, because it’s interesting to see different members have different views on him. It’ll be more interesting to see how that’ll work out if it ever comes time to actually argue about said views.

The art for the Techno-Organic Virus taking over Cable is actually really intense and well done. When it gets to him basically melding into the corner, damn...

Things I Dislike About This Issue:

Imagine the scene with James and Tabby except James not drawn like that. Imagine because sadly it’s not the case and we instead are back to putting up with this caricature mess.

The one and only negative thing I have to say about this one probably doesn’t belong here because they’re probably supposed to do this, but I just have to say that these fucking things creep me out every damn time they’re on the page:

All in all, I really hope this is the sign of this series going in a better direction. What has been lacklustre thus far now actually has my interest!
