BACKGROUND.,
tw allusions to alcohol dependence.
beatrice was born and raised in manchester, england. from a young age, her parents encouraged both of the johnsonn girls to chase their dreams because, at the end of the day, the people they owed it to were themselves. beatrice took this one way, whereas her younger sister took it another.
beatrice, despite being the oldest (or perhaps because of it) was the rebel of the two johnsonn girls. following the family’s move to america in 1968, the rift between the two sisters was more prevalent than ever, with beatrice’s little sister becoming something of a star student, very gifted and at the top of her class. beatrice, on the other hand, hated school with a passion and didn’t really see a point in it. really, it was an 8 hour waste of time.
(besides, where’s the fun in constantly being stared at? by the way others often treated her, beatrice felt like she’d stepped off of the plane from mars, not england.)
due to not really taking much time to study, she was held back once in the 9th grade (this was back in england). at the time, her parents were beside themselves, and even beatrice herself was dissapointed. this was something that followed her over to the usa and she was sure it would spell disaster for her. however, she found that little fact to be something of divine intervention -- for if she hadn’t been held back, she wouldn’t have met the other members of the rollergirls in class.
with her newfound friends at her side, bea had a new lease on life. no, school wasn’t miraculously the greatest thing on earth, but it gave her them and so, it can’t be all that bad? besides, now that she felt less alone and less like she was constantly under a microscope, she recognized that she was actually quite good at math and economics. huh, who knew?
throughout high school, beatrice realized that she had to make something of herself. despite her mother being a relatively successful but deeply respected jazz musician in the manchester scene, beatrice soon found out that she wasn’t the best singer . . . but she could play the bass.
being the through-line and soul of a song is very important to her. looking back on all of her favorite songs and artists, there’s one thing that they all have in common: basslines that get stuck in your head and make you want to dance.
but beatrice doesn’t just want to make people dance. she’s always wanted to say something. she wanted to be part of something that was bigger than herself.
she loves being in the band and, despite their fame, is the type of person who swears up and down that she didn’t change, but everyone else around her did. uh, yeah, sure.
9 times out of 10, she can be found out at a local club in nyc, rubbing elbows with other creatures of the night. being in a famous band has its perks, and she’s come to find out that most of them have to do with everyone wanting to be her friend now that she’s a rollergirl (and that it means something).
her lifestyle has caused a rift between her and her family, primarily her younger sister. beatrice isn’t the type to outwardly come out and say it, but whenever she thinks about the loss of the relationship that she once had with her lil sister, it makes her sad  . . . so she doesn’t think about it and just has another drink or starts another meaningless conversation with another no name (but the sinking feeling still remains: who else am i bound to lose?)
still, if you were to ask her, she’d say that she’s still searching for something. what is it? she doesn’t know, but she hopes she can find out before losing everyone.
essentially, beatrice is a loyal friend who has too many bad habits to count. she can play the bass like a champ and it’s one of the few things that she feels completely confident in herself when she does it. however, she’s struggling with many demons and one of the most pressing of them is the worry that she’s bound to lose everything she loves.

PLOTS.
I'M NOT IN LOVE. for whatever reason (we can decide!) your muse has enchanted bea. she wants to get to know them and has been asking all around the record company to try and get any information out of anyone. really, she's even asked the janitorial staff if they've heard anything. how will your muse take it? bonus points if what bea's heard are all lies.
CHERRY BOMB. her bandmates mean the world to her and, should anyone try to cross them, they'll have to face the wrath of beatrice. being one of the eldest members of the group, she feels slightly responsible for them (for better or worse) but finds it hard to remove her party lifestyle with being a healthy role model / friend for the other girls.
FAME. your muse and beatrice are well aware of one another, both from seeing the other around the record company and through their exploits in the local bar and club scene. they both feed into the other's more hedonistic side, and chaos is something almost synonymous with beatrice's name. is your muse along for the ride, or just using bea for her connections?
LANDSLIDE. whenever she’s around your muse, you remind her of her younger sister, someone whom she deeply misses and wishes she could rekindle a relationship with. for better or worse, she’s trying to rekindle that by appointing herself your makeshift big sister. whew. not that she’s rather good at being sisterly, but she’ll try her best.
unfortunately that’s all my brain will allow me to come up with at the moment XMXMMX but i love the standard connection types: exes, old friends, found family, ex friends, fwbs, acquaintances, people who she’s using, bad influences, good influences, any plot type we come up with, i promise i will be obsessed with!

Storia Di Musica #184 - Eric Clapton - Just One Night, 1980

The Westing Game Chapter Two
Titled Ghosts or Worst.
Last chapter gave us a basic rundown of the families who live here: Wexlers (the family patriarch is doctor with an office in the lobby), the Hoos (who run Shin Hoo’s restaurant on floor five), the Theodrakis (run a coffee shop), Sydelle Pulaski, F. Bumbauch and J.J. Ford.
We have yet to hear from the adult tenants besides Sydelle and the Wexlers, but here we get some insight into some of the kids of the apartment, as well as a few employees. Let’s run through the characters and plot points!
-”Old Man Westing” is not actually present, but is still a prominent figure in this chapter.  The apartment buildings are “property of the Westing Estate” and the nearby town is called “Westingtown” so these Westings are a BIG deal. Yet...no one’s seen “Old Man Westing” in years. Rumor is he’s either on a private island or he’s dead and still rotting in his supposedly abandoned mansion (wouldn’t there be, like, a maid?).
-There’s a doorman, Sandy, who has a lot of lurid tales to tell about the mysterious Westing Estate. He also resents “Old Man Westing” since he was fired from the paper mill (but why was he fired). Seems unlikely he’s in on whatever this probably-Westing-orchestrated scheme is then, but then, there was probably a reason he was made doorman, right?
- The “sixty two year old delivery boy” who gave all the tenants their invitations gets a name, Otis. Is HE in on Not-Barney’s scheme?
-We learn that unfortunately, Mr, Hoo’s restaurant isn’t doing well because the neighborhood “is too exclusive for Mr. Hoo”. He may be cooking up authentic Chinese cuisine but sounds like this rich neighborhood is cooking up a steaming pile of racism. Unsurprisingly.
- Side note, this book was apparently published in 1978, so I’m assuming the setting here is the 1970′s, as that seems to fit with the way people talk and the background details. Might be earlier, though!
-Turtle Wexler turns out a young girl, and unlike her parents, the lass is bold and daring. SO daring, she’s not at all deterred by the tale that the last people who went into the Westing House (on Halloween, naturally, gotta set the mood) ran right back out screaming their heads off, one running right off the cliff and dashing himself on the rocks below. The other guy came out with bloody hands, got committed to a mental institution, and all he’ll say anymore is “purple waves”. Turtle’s like “shit yeah, sounds great, give me two dollars for every minute I stay in that hellplace!” Girl’s got spunk to spare, but I have a feeling she’ll find more than she bargained for. (Also, WHY is her name Turtle. Is it a nickname? I hope it is, I hope her parents aren’t that cruel).
-The final kid we’re introduced to is Chris Theodrakis, who seems to be housebound due to some sort of illness or disability, and spends his time people watching and birdwatching. As a result, he sees a mysterious person with a limp enter the Westing House. I find myself pretty concerned about Chris already- he ends the chapter by going into spasms, my first thought was epilepsy, but that shouldn’t prevent him from leaving the house. Unless his family doesn’t want him having fits in public, and is locking him away, which would be supremely shitty. Granted, it could be some other illness, but it’s also concerning his family chose to leave him in a place with windows you can’t see inside if he does have a serious medical condition. You’d think, especially since they’re working nearby, that they’d want to be able to look up and check on him easily (or have a neighbor do so). It really seems like he’s been tucked away out of sight and out of mind, and that’s upsetting. Clearly being isolated isn’t doing the kid’s mental state any favors, as he starts feeling he’s being watched (making me wonder if there’s some kind of secret surveillance in this place) and then asks “If God is watching him, why is he like this?”
-A purple martin (bird) is what leads Chris to notice the mysterious person. I wonder if that’s significant at all, considering the purple waves thing.
-The plot thickens! Can’t wait to see where this will go. So many balls in the air!

One For Toots
Tumblr media
Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals died late Friday, Sept. 11, in a hospital in St. Andrew, Jamaica, after contracting COVID-19, according to reports in the Jamaica Gleaner and the Jamaica Observer. He was 78. Here is something I wrote about this brilliant singer and his great soul solo album for Trunkworthy a few years back.
********** If soul music is all about musical exuberance, deep feeling, and unfettered joy, then one of the most soulful records of all time was created by a genre outsider: Jamaican reggae vocalist Toots Hibbert.
Even listeners with just a cursory knowledge of reggae via Perry Henzell’s 1973 breakthrough movie The Harder They Come would be familiar with Toots. His trio the Maytals are the first to be seen performing in the film, miming their jubilant 1969 hit “Sweet and Dandy” in a Kingston recording studio. (Another Maytals song heard in the movie, “Pressure Drop,” would be famously covered by the Clash in 1979.) By ’73, Toots had been active professionally for more than a decade; veterans of the ska and rocksteady scenes, his group could lay claim to giving the music a name with their 1968 hit “Do the Reggay.” A string of gritty singles produced by Leslie Kong led to a high-profile contract with Island Records’ Mango subsidiary.
Classic albums like Funky Kingston and In the Dark followed, but by the end of the ‘70s the Maytals’ gutsy brand of roots reggae was displaced in Jamaica by the digitized sound of dancehall. The group broke up, but Toots remained under contract with Mango, with his talent unabated. In a bolt of inspiration, the label brought the singer to Memphis, Tennessee, for a genre-leaping session of classic soul interpretations.
Toots in Memphis, as the 1988 set was titled, was a natural all around. Jamaican musicians had been cocking their ears to American R&B since the early ‘60s, when ska developed as a turned-around island take on the driving hits aired on New Orleans radio stations and imported to Jamdown shops and sound systems. Like many American R&B and soul stars, several of the early Jamaican singers, including Toots, were reared on gospel. And reggae covers of U.S. soul hits were commonplace from the ‘60s on.
For Toots’ Bluff City session, maverick producer-keyboardist Jim Dickinson – the local iconoclast best known for his work with Big Star and Alex Chilton – surrounded Toots with skilled players from both the reggae and soul communities. The top reggae rhythm section of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare had played on nearly every major hit to emanate from Jamaica for a decade (including Peter Tosh’s cover of the Temptations’ “Don’t Look Back”). From the soul side, Teenie Hodges of Hi Records’ house band, Eddie Hinton of the Muscle Shoals studio group, and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns contributed. To a man, the musicians understood the universal language of the Groove.
The repertoire for Toots in Memphis was tailored to the vocalist’s rough, forceful attack and freewheeling, improvisational interpretative approach. Two songs apiece were drawn from the catalogs of the late Stax Records star Otis Redding and his lesser-known but equally powerful contemporary James Carr. Hit material by Hi’s luminaries Al Green and Ann Peebles was essayed, as well as a Jackie Moore number unforgettably covered by Goldwax and Hi soul master O.V. Wright. Songs originated by Stax’s Eddie Floyd and West Coast soul man J.J. Malone and a lone original filled out the collection.
Toots rose to the occasion with in-the-pocket reggae-styled readings that equal and in some cases nearly surpass the originals. He makes Otis’ album-opening “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember” completely his own, crushes Carr’s stormy “Love Attack,” works new wrinkles into Floyd’s “Knock On Wood,” and runs neck-and-neck with O.V. on “Precious, Precious.” For some Memphis soul connoisseurs, the highlight may be the nearly seven-minute version of Reverend Al’s “Love and Happiness”; many lesser covers of the tune have been cut, but the presence of co-writer Hodges on guitar, Sly and Robbie’s urgent bottom, and Toots’ stretched-out, probing reading refresh the Beale Street bar band standard. “Reggae got soul,” Toots declared in a 1976 song. If there was ever any doubt about that, he proved it definitively on Toots in Memphis.

purficklyclean replied to your post “autumnjournal replied to your post “FILM ASK GAME” ...”
I would see a Taika Waititi-directed Westing Game adaptation at least 3 times in theaters
FOR REAL. See I have this really stylized vision in my head--Ellen Raskin was a graphic artist, she understood a visual, so while initially I thought Wes Anderson, too often he favors whimsy and tableau over feeling and that’s where Taika bests him. Also, Taika is no slouch when it comes to the weird and wonderful. Taika Waititi it ist!
I have some casting ideas, natch. I want:
Jared Harris as Sandy McSouthers, Ivonne Coll as Flora Baumbach, Allison Janney as Crow, Jake Johnson as Jake Wexler*, Tony Shalhoub as Otis Amber, Catherine Curtin as Sydelle Pulaski, Betty Gabriel as Judge J.J. Ford, Yang Zichan as Sun Hoo.
My choice for Grace Wexler is my least favorite actor in the world BUT she’d be great in the part. I shan’t name her...I’ll just whisper her name in the wind.
*a little young but he would crush this part--Midwestern podiatrist/bookie? COME ON.

DrawBridge Tales from the Purple Room
Today the kids are still very interested in writing. What writing means to them fascinates me.  Barney sits beside me on the floor and asks me to write various letters for him on an index card.  “Write b and then i.” I do it.
“Write p and d and c”
He lets me know he wants me to write them vertically. I do this too.
He points to the first letters ‘b’ and ‘i’ he says. Then, “Write key here.”
“Key?”
“Yeah.”
I’m thinking , does he want me to write the word ‘key’? Or does he want me to draw a key?  It doesn’t occur to me that for Barney ‘key’ might be a letter of the alphabet.  It sounds like one:  b, c, d, p, key.
I draw a key.
He says, “No. No key” and he takes my pen and crosses it out.  Then he wants me to read the first word.  I say “bi” and he says the word also includes “no key”.  So, “binokey” which makes him laugh really hard. J.J. and Elaine also start laughing.  Barney asks me to draw a key next to the ‘p’ so he can cross it out and make it ‘no key’.  He wants me to read that word so I say “p-no-key”  He tells me to write an ‘o’ at the end of it. He says, “p-no-key-o.”  Pinoccio!  I can’t believe it. I have no idea if he knows about Pinoccio or if it’s all just verbal chance. The other words all include ‘no-key’ and then he wants me to write ‘knee’ so that he can cross it out ‘no knee’.  I do a quick drawing of a person and he x’s out the leg. No-knee. There is one more word at the bottom to work out but the first clean-up time has come and we all get moving before we can read it.
After clean-up, Elaine wants to work on the picture she began in my compbook on the 12th of September.  It’s a picture I was copying along side her. She drew on the left page and I copied her on the right. The band at the top was what we got done during the first session. She worked on it for the second time last Thursday on the 21st . This is what it looked like before I left for the day.
She asked about it as soon as she saw me after circle time.
It was her third session with the same picture. She told me to make sure I bring the picture when I come on Thursday so we can work on it  more. Most people believe children have short attention spans.  It’s not that their attention spans are short, it’s that the nature of their attention is different than the attention of adults.  I think most adults would be surprised to know that a four year old can be so dedicated to working on a drawing over a period of several days. I think it’s a form of amnesia.
Carla comes over with two books. One stars Batman and the other stars Superman. She wants me to read it to her.  Soon I’m on the couch with five Purple Room friends, we crowded around the book as I turn the pages. The story is pretty boring so I start to do a synopsis of each page, leaving out the dull parts.  Otis says, “Please, can you just read it for real?”  What I thought were the boring parts weren’t boring to them at all.
Barney wants me to write down a story for him.
“Once upon a time there was a little boy called Alex and then there was goodbye and after goodbye he just was tired and he saw a bench and he sleeped and sleeped and then he heard “zzzzzzzzzz! Sssssssss!” and he waked up and realized he was trapped.”
J.J. introduces me to a stuffed giraffe he’s brought with him to school. It has a snap on its belly and when the snap is undone it opens into a pillow. He wants me to pet it and then draw it. He holds it still for me and I draw all the parts, naming them as we go.  Then he wants me to get another piece of paper so I can draw the backside of the giraffe, and then another piece so I can draw the underside and then another piece so I can draw the top view of the giraffe. He says if we tape all of these together the drawing of the giraffe will stand up.
I remember that he asked me to do this the last time I visited. I wasn’t sure it was possible but he got some tape and instructed me step by step, telling me where to draw the legs and the body and the head and when we finished, sure enough, the giraffe stood. When it was done, he took a marker and put the spots on.
He wants to do this again but it’s clean up time and I have to go, so I say good-bye. I’m sad about leaving him with only one quarter of the drawing he wanted me to make.

Since last week’s good people post focused primarily on the ‘hidden heroes’ who had quietly gone about the business helping victims of Hurricane Harvey, I intended to write this week about a philanthropist who has given away billions.  But more and more stories of ‘hidden heroes’ working tirelessly and selflessly to help those affected by the storms and subsequent floods kept popping up everywhere I looked, and I decided to stick with that theme for this week … these people deserve a bit of recognition and a big THANKS!  So let me introduce you to more heroes down in the Lone Star State!
Brothers Brad and Adam Morris of San Antonio, Texas, wanted to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, but they weren’t sure how. It just so happens that their cousin is, a Houston police officer and he  gave them an idea when he said, “We’ve got boats, but what we need is high water trucks.” Light bulb moment!  Brad and Adam perused Craigslist and finally found just the ticket … er, truck.  A steal at only $13,000!
Tumblr media
Papers signed, check written, and they were off to Houston where, with their new-used truck named ‘The Punisher’, they successfully helped rescue dozens from the flood waters.
Great job guys!  I wonder what they will do with the truck after this, though?
Dr. Stephen Kimmel is one dedicated surgeon.  Even though flood waters were just beginning to enter his own home, when he received a call from Clear Lake Regional Medical Center informing him that a young patient, Jacob Terrazas (16) was in serious trouble and would require immediate surgery, Dr. Kimmel immediately headed to the hospital.  Problem was, due to the flooding, he didn’t get very far in his car.  (Too bad he didn’t have the Morris’ truck!)
Fortunately, two volunteer firemen were able to reach him in a canoe, and the trio paddled to within a mile or so of the hospital.  Dr. Kimmel walked … or slogged, more aptly, the last mile of the way,
“Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes,” Kimmel said in a press release. “This young man’s life would have been changed for the worse forever if we hadn’t been able to perform surgery when we did. In the end, it all turned out very well.”  Hats off to Dr. Kimmel for putting his patient before all else.
Tumblr media
Who says corporations don’t have a heart?  Well, mostly they don’t but the manager of a Pizza Hut in Sugarland, Texas, has a very big one!
“When I heard there were families in need, I knew we needed to act fast,” said manager Shayda Habib. “I called my husband and asked him to gather up kayaks and meet me at the restaurant.” With a limited crew, Habib got to work and prepared as many pizzas as possible. They loaded the pizzas into delivery pouches, then stacked them on kayaks and delivered them, free of charge,  to as many flood zone homes as they could.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far, Habib and her employees were able to get 120 pizzas to stranded residents, and they plan to keep making and delivering until they run out of ingredients. “We are so proud of our team for seeing a need, stepping up and helping the community in a time of devastation,” Pizza Hut franchisee James Bodenstedt said.
Not being a sports fan, of course I had never heard of J.J. Watt.  Turns out he is a football player for the Houston Texans (never heard of that team, either). Mr. Watt started by making a personal donation of $100,000 to a Hurricane Harvey relief fund, but his good deed did not stop there.  Mr. Watt made a video urging people to donate to help the people of Houston rebuild their lives.
This is a case of somebody using their fame, their name-recognition (though not by me  😉  ) to do good deeds for people in need.  As of Tuesday afternoon, his video had led to more than $20 million in donations! Thumbs up, Mr. Watt! Now go knock one out of the park!
A group of Mexican bakers who were trapped in their Houston bakery for two days during Hurricane Harvey.  So what did they do?  Well, they could have tried to make their own beer from the yeast in the bakery.  Or they could have played poker for chocolate chips, or had a flour fight.  But they did none of the above.  They did what they do all day, every day … they baked.
Tumblr media
The workers used up 4,400 pounds of flour to bake bread and pan dulce, Mexican sweet bread, throughout the night and day. Finally the owner of the bakery managed to get to them, and all the bread was taken to emergency shelters where it was given away to help feed the displaced people.  Wonderful use of time, guys!  High fives!
And here’s yet another company with a heart.  A Houston furniture chain, Gallery Furniture, opened its doors to the temporarily displaced, offering both of its stores to serve as temporary shelters.  They are providing food, beds, and clean restrooms for anyone in need.  Even pets are welcome!
Tumblr media
The company even sent out its largest moving truck to pick up stranded residents and bring them back to the store.
Tumblr media
I have seen Sandra Bullock in a few movies, but other than that I know little about her.  In addition to not being a sports fan, I do not have an interest in Hollywood ‘goings-on’, and know little about most actors.  But to today’s point, Bullock, who has a home in Texas and who is a longtime supporter of the Red Cross, said it was crucial to look above the heated political rhetoric around the devastating storm and urged fellow Americans to give. “There are no politics in eight feet of water. There are human beings in eight feet of water.”  Bullock made a $1 million contribution of her own.
Tumblr media
And yet one more company putting people over profit.  Anheuser-Busch, brewers of Budweiser, Busch and Michelob, to name a few, paused the production of beer at its Cartersville, Georgia brewery long enough to can a half-million bottles of pure water to send to Texas for those who did not have safe drinking water. That was last week.  THIS week, employees volunteered to work on Labour Day to fill another one million cans to help with the relief effort in Texas!
Tumblr media
What a great group, eh?  Secretary of Labour Alexander Acosta said of the workers, “they’re working for their fellow Americans. They’re helping the people of Texas. So what better way to celebrate Labor Day than helping others.” Agreed — thumbs up to both the company and its employees!
And finally this … not exactly a good people story, but still …
Tumblr media
Meet Otis* … he was seen walking through the streets of Sinton, Texas, near Corpus Christi, carrying a full bag of … dog food!  I believe that Otis knew his fellow canines would need help and was on his way to provide such help.  See … humans are not the only ones that are … well … human!
Many, many kudos to all those who have pitched in to help their fellow humans caught up in the devastation left behind by Hurricane Harvey.  Sadly, as I write this piece on Tuesday afternoon, out in the Atlantic, Hurricane Irma has been upgraded to a category 5 storm and is expected to hit Puerto Rico today and then make landfall in Florida on Saturday.  And still another storm is forming behind Irma. I have a nephew and several friends in Florida, including our blogger-friend Gronda.  My nephew tells me that the shelves in the local markets are already bare. My heart and thoughts are with all those in Puerto Rico and Florida … anywhere in the path of Irma, for she is anticipated to be just as fierce as was Harvey, perhaps even more so.  And many, many thanks to all the good ‘hidden heroes’ from the last two weeks.
Tumblr media
* Note:  Otis actually belongs to Salvador Segovia’s grandson.  Salvador had left him alone in his screened-in back porch, along with food and water. But the storm must have scared Otis, so he busted open the screen door and ran away, grabbing his bag o’ kibble on the way out.  Luckily, a stranger found Otis, thought he was so adorable that she posted his picture on Facebook, and he was quickly reunited with his family.  I just couldn’t resist painting him as a ‘good samaritan’ though.  And who knows?  Perhaps that was his mission!

Meet The NCAA’s 5-Foot-9 Scoring Machine
No state has a glossier tradition in men’s college basketball than North Carolina. It has produced 13 national championships.1 It is home to the sport’s fiercest rivalry: Duke vs. North Carolina. It has seen more than a hundred All-Americans and dozens of Hall of Famers cut their teeth on its courts, including Tim Duncan, Vince Carter and Michael Jordan.
You might think that the state’s all-time leading scorer is one of those all-time greats. But he’s actually a current player. He’s not a Tar Heel or a Blue Devil or even a Demon Deacon. He’s a Fighting Camel in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Far from the spotlight, Chris Clemons, a senior at Campbell University in the Big South Conference, is making college-basketball history in a state that’s long on it.
As a high schooler, Clemons was an all-state athlete in Raleigh, smack dab in the backyard of the ACC. When the power conferences overlooked him, Campbell didn’t. In fact, it sometimes brought the entire coaching staff to watch him hoop. “I told him when I was sitting in his living room that I thought he’d be the all-time leading scorer in Campbell history,” Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan told me.
Only five players in NCAA history have scored more than Clemons has. And his 3,106 points have not come easy: Clemons is 5-foot-9, at least 4 inches shorter than each of his teammates. But that disadvantage wasn’t a problem for McGeehan. “I’ve never thought twice about his height,” he said.
Chris Clemons is the shortest of the scoring greats

With Clemons on the court, the Fighting Camels score 1.12 points per possession, according to Hoop Lens — or at a rate that would be among the best in the country if maintained over an entire season. When he sits, the team scores 0.84 points per possession, or at a rate that would rank around 300th if maintained. Without Clemons, the team’s effective field goal percentage drops more than 10 percentage points, and the team’s turnover percentage spikes almost 7 percentage points. As a pick-and-roll ball handler, he has scored more points this season than everyone else on the team combined, according to data provided by Synergy Sports.
This season, Clemons is scoring 30.1 points per game, tied for the second-highest mark by any player since 1992. Charles Jones in 1996-97 was the last player to average more than 30 points per game over a season, while Central Michigan’s Marcus Keene came close in 2016-17, hitting 29.97. Clemons has scored in double figures in 111 consecutive games.2
He can also take the roof off an arena. Behind a 44-inch vertical3 and sculpted physique, Clemons has made a habit of dunking on defenders. Hard. Of Campbell’s 22 dunks this season, he has eight. “It’s like, ‘You’re 5-9!?'” McGeehan said, bewildered.4

McGeehan hasn’t wasted a second of his point guard’s eligibility. Clemons has played at least 80 percent of team minutes each season on campus. As a senior, he’s taking on 93.1 percent.
Over the past three seasons, Clemons has finished no lower than seventh nationally in KenPom’s percentage of possessions used metric, which measures how many possessions a player used while on court, assigning credit or blame to the player when his actions resulted in an ended possession. He leads the country this season, absorbing 37.5 percent of the team’s possessions. “Obviously,” McGeehan noted, “he’s heavily relied upon.”

Should his average hold, Clemons will finish the season with a 38.9 percent usage rate, which would give him three of the top 25 marks produced by players since 2009, the first year for which data is available.5 His career usage rate (35.9 percent) figures to edge former BYU star Jimmer Fredette for the top spot by any player over the past decade.
There have actually been plenty of undersized, high-usage players on college courts. Clemons is just relied upon much more than any of the rest — and has been since he arrived on campus. Since 2008, there have been 450 seasons that saw a player shorter than 5-foot-10 appear in 20 games and play at least 40 percent of team minutes, according to BartTorvik.com. Of that sample, Clemons is in line to finish with the first, third, fourth and 23rd highest usage rates.
Let’s remove the height restriction. Given those same qualifications, since 2008 there have been 522 seasons of a player producing a usage rate exceeding 30 percent. Of that pool, Clemons is on track to post two usage rates that rank in the top 15 and another one that ranks in the top 45.
This season, only one player6 has taken a higher share of team shots than Clemons’s 39.3 percent.7 This would be the fourth consecutive season that Clemons has finished in the top 25 in percentage of team shots taken, a feat of production that has never been matched since KenPom began tracking such metrics.8
The Fighting Camels made their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1992, five years before Clemons was born. This season, Clemons has Campbell roaring into shape to make a run at a second, provided the team wins its conference tournament.
Which is to say: Clemons has the perennial green light to do everything. “I always had one,” Clemons said. “But I don’t remember it being like this.”
Have coaches ever told him not to shoot? “I haven’t heard that lately,” he said.
Is there anything McGeehan wouldn’t trust Clemons to do? “Probably give me a haircut.”
Clemons’s numbers are more impressive when you consider the system under which he plays. Watching him, you get the sense that he could get to the rim or drain a jump shot around 10 seconds before he actually does. McGeehan runs a hybrid version of Pete Carril’s Princeton Offense that relies on quick ball movement and constant motion. It also typically suffocates tempo, as the Princeton Offense is ostensibly designed to limit huge production by either team. Campbell has ranked outside the top 190 in average offensive possession length each season since 2013. This season, it ranks 265th in adjusted tempo. Campbell averages 68.4 possessions per 40 minutes, which is tied for 238th nationally. North Carolina, for instance, averages nearly eight more possessions per game.
Despite all of his success, Clemons may not ever reach the next level. To be sure, there have been other players under 5-foot-10 to reach the NBA: Muggsy Bogues, Earl Boykins, Calvin Murphy, Spud Webb. There have even been a few who have done it since the turn of the century: Isaiah Thomas, Kay Felder, Nate Robinson. Clemons, who has declared for the NBA draft after each of the past two seasons only to return to campus, is unlikely to join them via that route.
The irony is heavy: One of the greatest scorers of all time, in arguably the state with the richest college basketball tradition, plays just a short drive down the road from perhaps the most-talked-about college athlete of all time, for a team that packed in fewer than 2,000 fans per home game last season. The smallest guy on the court is dealt the largest offensive burden and has most of the team’s dunks. The pint-sized player with the larger-than-life impact.
“When it’s all said and done,” McGeehan said, “I’m probably going to go back and say, ‘Wow, did that really all just happen?’”
