Although this is my birthday week, I wanted to spend it with you guys and give us both something we can enjoy :) I love every single one of you guys and I hope you like this!
Tumblr media
Now I’m in my feels
Way up in the clouds somewhere now
Don’t know what’s real
Tumblr media
Working at the Java Cup, Steve dealt with a lot of different people. Tired students, doctors and nurses coming and going from shifts, and everyone in between. During the six months of his employment there only one customer seemed to catch his attention, you.
From the moment you walked in he knew he was fucked. With one kid on your hip and the other in the stroller, you already had him in the palm of your hand. No matter what, rain or shine, you and your two kids always came in with bright smiles. Although a lot of your interactions were small talk or your older son trying to, his heart infatuation for you every single time.
You were so fucking beautiful and Steve was nothing but a fool for you. So many times he would go home and just pray that you weren’t taken, that maybe somewhere written in the stars there was a chance for him.
Steve wanted to ask you out but every single time he chickened out, throwing out multiple cup sleeves that had horrible puns written on them in the process. Ever since getting broken up with by Nancy, his self esteem and confidence dropped. No matter how many times his best friend and coworker, Robin, tried to talk some sense into him, he just couldn’t do it.
It was comical watching him stutter and blush scarlet every time you would speak, tripping over his words like it was his first time ever talking. Because he was so smitten with you, his insecurities grew and poking fun at him any time he would think about possibly asking you out.
Here you were, a pretty mom with two adorable kids that he adored, so sweet and kind to him, and so far out of his league. There was no pot at the end of this rainbow for Steve, but he continued to chase it in hopes that maybe, just maybe he was wrong.
Now it's been six months and Steve has run out of steam, his legs growing tired and his lungs burning with exhaustion with how long he's been running. So, he's decided that it's time to give up on his mission to of getting to the finish line.
There was no point to continue trying, not when you're probably more than happy with the father of your children, going home to your white picket fence and happy home. So he pulled back, watched from behind the counter, and continued to daydream about the life he's always wanted.
Tumblr media
“You know you could just go talk to her, right?” Robin’s voice is louder than she thinks, the low music and hum of the espresso machine doing little to cover it up.
“Say it louder, why don’t you.” Rolling his eyes, Steve continues to wipe down the counter that he’s been working on for the past ten minutes.
“I’m just sayin’, it’s kind of pathetic and creepy that you’re always staring.” Shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly, the brunette girl runs her hands down her black apron. “Besides, what’s the worst that could happen?”
“What’s the worst-” Turning on his heel quickly, Steve stares at his best friend with wide eyes, “Robin, there is a laundry list of things that could go wrong.”
“Yeah? Try me.” Crossing her ankle over the other, Robin leans on the sink with a waiting look.
“Firstly, she could be married,” Steve starts counting on his finger.
“No ring on her finger.” Robin counters.
“Well she’s a mom with two kids, I doubt she has time for a twenty something, no good, barista that barely has his life together.”
“EEEEEEEE WRONG,” She makes a loud buzzer noise, “One you aren’t no good, you’re actually a really great person who needs to see just how amazing he is. Two, you may be a barista who can barely keep his life together but, you’re reliable and take care of yourself, not to mention you have your own car and place, more than other twenty somethings. And lastly, you’re also a mother to a group of teenagers, so it works perfectly.”
Dropping his hands down to his sides, Steve lets the words settle into his heart. He was a good person, he did have a good impression with the gaggle of kids he sometimes watches, and he did have some of his life together.
“Okay well, she could reject me and I will not only lose more of my confidence but I’ll also lose my favorite customer.” Sighing in defeat, he whips the rag that still sits in his hand over his shoulder. "Either way, I gave up on that dream a long time ago."
Robin shakes her head, stepping forward to the boy she calls her best friend and shakes him by the shoulders. “You are Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington! There was a reason everyone called you king Steve and it wasn’t just because you were a huge dick.”
“Hey!!” Steve raises his voice in defeat and she waves him off continuing her peptalk.
“Listen, I know that lady killer is somewhere in there,” She pokes at his chest, “So you’re gonna put your big boy panties on, walk up to her and ask her out! I’m sick and tired of watching you look all sad and depressing, so you’re going to do as I say or I’ll do it for you.” Smiling brightly at him, the girl taps him lovingly on the shoulder.
Robin may be a lot of things, including annoying, but a liar is not one of them. Steve knows that she will one hundred percent walk up to you, throw him under the bus, with a mega-watt smile as she does it.
Watching his friend walk around the counter with a broom and dust pan in hand, her head turns to wear your sat at a table by the front window, talking to your older son, rocking your baby in the stroller with your foot. Turning her attention back to Steve, she smiles wickedly and turns slightly like she’s heading your way. Anxiety rises in the back of his throat, heartbeat picking up and banging hard in his chest.
“Fine, I’m going just- fuck off.” It comes out through gritted teeth. Running a shaking hand down the front of his apron, Steve rounds the counter muttering something under his breath.
As he walks to the table, Robin gives him two thumbs up and an exaggerated smile to which he replies by simply throwing a middle finger up at her.
As he steps closer to your table the thought of turning back around and hiding in the back room comes into mind.
There’s no pot of gold here, only gray clouds and roaring thunder. He can turn back now and continue his sorrowful journey of pining.
But then he looks at you, smiling and laughing at something the young boy next to you said, eyes squeezed shut and head thrown back. What a beautiful way to die, Steve thinks. The thunder and lightning is all worth it when he gets to see you as he takes his final breaths.
“H-hey,” His voice is wobbly, nervousness clearly showing as he speaks.
“Hi Steve.” Your eyes meet his, saccharine smile tugging on the corners of your lips.
“Hi steeb!” The young boy next to you waves while clutching a red crayon in his tiny hand.
“Hi Aidan. How are you little man?” Steve seems to loosen up a bit, the presence of your son lets him exhale just slightly.
“M’colorin a pixture.” The small boy’s tongue pokes between his lips, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he draws what looks like a demented stick figure.
“It looks good, little dude.” Steve encourages, cooing sweetly at him.
“Fanks.” Still focusing on his picture, the smaller boy grabs a different crayon from the box that sits on the table.
“What’s up, Steve?” You ask, still rocking the stroller back and forth with your tennis shoe covered foot.
“Oh-h yeah, um I was just gonna ask, ah what you were doing.” Just like a switch, he’s back to being a fumbling doofus.
You giggle at him and he feels his cheeks tingle with heat. Looking between the two kids, you look back up to the older man in front of you.
“Well, I’m enjoying a coffee while Aidan colors and Bella naps peacefully.” You nod your head slowly, eyeing the barista questioningly.
Steve wants to slap a hand on his forehead, embarrassed by the fact he can’t even formulate one sentence.
“Yeah, no I see that. Seems fun, I mean not fun but like ya know, seems-“ His stammering is cut off by your soft voice.
“Are you okay? You seem really nervous.” Your eyebrows are pinched together, worry painted on your features.
“Me? I’m great, fantastic!” It comes enthusiastic and way louder than he intended, so loud that Robin hears and instantly facepalms.
“Well, that’s great Steve.” You’re still eyeing him suspiciously and he really wants to jump ship.
“I’m just gonna go and do my ugh, my stuff.” Hooking a thumb over his shoulder, spinning on the ball of his feet leaving before he can say anything else embarrassing.
No, he can’t leave now, not when he’s made it this close to the finish line. This is what he’s been waiting for, the treasure he’s been searching for. It’s no or never and he can’t go back to praying the same prayer that somewhere in this universe you two were destined to be.
With a new found confidence, he turns right back into the eye of the storm and faces it head strong.
“Actually, I came over here because I wanted to know if maybe you’d like to go out sometime.” His chest is puffed out like, more sure of himself than he’s ever been.
The confidence that’s surging through him starts to falter when he reads your expression. You, and Aidan who has now stopped coloring, stare at him with bugged out eyes and gaping mouths.
“Only if that’s okay with you and all. If you want you can bring the kids along and we can go get ice cream and stuff but if you need it I have some friends who are great with kids and who will be willing to babysit for you.” He’s back peddling, trying to give you a way out in case you want to reject him it won’t hurt so bad.
“Oh Steve,” it’s said with pity and he knows the lighting strike is about to hit, “I-I’m not their mom.”
“Yeah no I get it, sorry if I- wait..” Stopping in his tracks, he looks back and forth between you and the small boy, connecting the dots in his head. “You’re not their mom?”
You and Aidan share a look before giggling together. Gazing back up at the flustered man in front of you, you smile kindly at him.
“No, I’m their nanny, Steve. Although I love them like they’re my own, they’re not.”
“Oh.” Steve continues to stare at you, his pretty pink lips in the shape of an O.
“Yeah, I just watch these little guys.” You shrug your shoulders.
“That’s still cool, I mean the offer still stands.” Even though he’s confused, his voice is a little shaky when he asks.
“Do the kids still have to come?” You ask and Aidan shouts an offended “hey”.
“I mean they can if you want, it’s all up to you.” He eyes you, waiting for your reaction but your expression doesn’t give him much to go on.
“Hmmm, I’m going to have to ask my trusted right hand man.” Holding a finger up at him, you leave over to the smaller boy next to you.
Aidan covers you hear with a small hand trying to cover the movements of his lips, even though Steve can still his his muffled whispers from where he stands.
Shaking your head, you repeat back uh huh’s to him, taking everything that’s being said seriously.
Moving back to your upright position, you stare at Steve with a serious gaze.
“Well, my counsel says I should go but you have to buy me ice cream. No buts about it.” Your straight face begins to falter when Steve’s white teeth shine at you.
“Yeah, I’ll get you whatever ice cream you want.” Steve bobs his head, cheeks flaring pink and eyes shining brightly.
“You can’t kiss, only mommies and daddies do dat stuff.” Aidan pipes in and Steve can’t help but chuckle with how the little boys face is scrunched up with intensity.
“Yes sir.” Steve gives the little boy a solute, while sending you a sneaky wink, and the kid quickly accepts.
“So, I’ll text you?” Steve asks
“Yeah, I’d like that.” Your bottom lip is tucked between your teeth as you say it.
“Okay, cool cool. I’ll ah, see you later.” Steve nods his head, backing away from the table slowly.
Sprinting to the backroom, he sees Robin who pretends like she hasn’t been listening in.
“Robs, I fucking did it!” Steve whisper yells, still cautious knowing your still out there.
“I honestly thought you were gonna back out for a second! I’m so proud of you for hanging in there!”
The two of them start hopping around like jumping beans, beaming so brightly they can outshine any star in the sky.
“So you got her number?” Robin asks, heavily breathing from all their excitement.
“Fuck-“ stopping dead in his tracks, Steve bolts to the door and back out to the front.
That’s where he finds you’ve already left and he’s heartbroken. The only memory that you were even there is your lingering perfume that sticks to the air.
You’ll probably be back some time soon but he’s still a little let down knowing he didn’t fully seal the deal. Looking closely at the table, he notices Aidan left one of his drawings.
Picking up the paper, he looks at it closely realizing Aidan didn’t leave it, you did.
Steve,
You left before I could give you my number. I didn’t want to disrupt your little party or anything.
Can’t wait to get that ice cream.
-your favorite customer
683-027-9305
Folding up the paper, Steve sticks it in the pocket of his apron.
“Don’t worry Steve, she’ll be back.” Robin calls out from behind the counter, apparently not seeing the little not that was left.
“I know she will.” It’s said quietly but the smile on his lips isn’t.
It’s beautiful on this side of the rainbow, Steve thinks, the pot of gold was so worth all the work. Robin was right, he still had it.

As much as I love a good Barista AU, I am not a coffee drinker. I drink a crap ton of tea though so... ta da! DBDA as tea! Enjoy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charles:
Cinnamon Vanilla Chai served in a handleless tall stoneware mug because who bothers with handles anyway? All they do is slow you down and if you burn your fingers picking it up it's your fault for not wearing gloves.
Bold but sweet. Can be quite bitter if over-brewed. Pleasant aroma and caramel colouring for a warm and comforting blend of black tea, spices, and natural vanilla flavoring. Perfect for warming during colder months.
Edwin:
Java Masala Chai served in a sensible ceramic mug with a slightly chipped saucer. The inside bottom of the mug has a sassy comment that changes depending on the day of the year.
A blend of black tea, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger, with a twist of added coffee because just like coffee Edwin is an acquired taste and yet millions around the world are addicted.
Prepare a cup of your favorite milk, add a generous teaspoon and let it simmer for 10 minutes - careful contents will be hot and if you burn yourself it may mock you for your low pain tolerance.
Crystal:
Immortal Emperor Puer tea cake
Fantastic tea but you have to break into it first. Brew in a ceramic pot then transfer to a dreaming tree travel mug for a quick get away.
A Ripe Shou Puer that is a dark, opulent infusion mirroring the richness of ancient traditions. Made of tightly compressed leaves, aged to perfection, it exudes an earthy allure of walnut, vanilla, and aged oak that transcends time.
Niko:
Magnolia Green Tea served in a lovers double spout ceramic teapot. Be vigilant and don't let the water get above 85˚C otherwise you'll scorch the leaves.
The Magnolia flower or Hanakotoba represents a love for nature, nobility, perseverance, dignity, and everlasting connections. Made with green tea for the inherent health properties, Magnolia Green Tea involves layering fresh magnolia flowers with the tea leaves, allowing the natural fragrance of the flowers to infuse into the tea. This gives the tea a delicate floral aroma and flavor, with a smooth light citrus, floral, and honeysuckle taste. Pair with dandelion salad.

🌸 gallavich fic rec list 🌸
welcome to my 2023 fic rec list! i went through my ao3 bookmarks and my tumblr tags from this year so here's some (not all, or else this post would go on forever) of my fave (new & older) one-shots, completed multi-chaps, wips & ficlets <3
make sure to check out my 2021 list & my 2022 list ! since i'm not going to include fics i've mentioned before in this year's list :)
& don't forget to check out @gallavichfanficlibrary @gallavich-fic-club @gallavichthings @thegallavault for more recs plus @galladrabbles & @gallavichmeta too ✨ let's go!
one-shots:
doesn't matter where we go by @heymacy (The boys take a road trip.)
to think that we could stay the same by teatrolley (post-breakup au, but Mickey gets out of prison, Caleb doesn't exist, and we get really into their past and Ian’s (struggling) head)
of going home by @lalazeewrites (Valiant has taken the greatest fall from grace the superhero world has witnessed in years. The Shrike is an unregistered vigilante who doesn't even ping the radar of Chicago's crime fighting scene. Ian is forcibly put on leave from his job and returns to the Gallagher house, a failure all over again. Not only does he not know what Mickey does when the world goes dark, he doesn't know that Mickey is still living southside at all. Not since the events of eight years ago.)
quiet by @babygirlmickey (In the quiet of a perceived absence of scrutiny, Mickey can be incontrovertibly tender. Or: 5 times Mickey lets his guard down, as observed by various third parties.)
all i need in this life of sin (is me and my husband) by literatii (As embarrassing as it might be, Ian is not only his husband but also his best friend, and Mickey is pretty damn okay with that. Why the fuck would he find other people to do the exact same shit with that he already does with Ian, minus the fucking, when he can just do that shit with Ian plus the fucking? It makes no sense. Or: Ian wants the two of them to have more friends. Mickey doesn’t.)
thirteen hours by @crossmydna (Ian has known for thirteen hours that he’s not crossing the border with Mickey, so he makes the most of the time he has left with him.)
queen of decatur by jaxington (“How’d you know that?” Ian asks, smelling chum in the water, the observant little fuck. “Not like your brothers are getting sent to lady prison all that often.” Mickey thumbs at his lip, trying to find a way out of this conversation. It probably wouldn’t be too hard to distract Ian just by taking of his pants, but he is trying this new thing where he actually tells Ian what’s going on in his head. “No.” He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. “It’s my mom.”)
like strings of fire by @gardenerian (mickey finds a safe and colorful way for ian to indulge himself when hypersexuality rears its ugly head.)
the needle and the burning body by squash (jesuisgourde) (Mickey had two burning torches for hands but he knew what to do with them. Ian's head was on fire and all he knew was how to run and keep running. How to find a cliff and jump off. How to make Mickey chase after him, again and again. And in a cold cell in prison, Mickey catches him.)
some fucked up romcom by godisthedice (Two years after they locked him up, Mickey told himself that he was done with Ian fucking Gallagher for good. Two years as a free man and he's marrying him for all the wrong reasons.)
when the sun goes down by @sam-loves-seb (super cute and fluffy lifeguard au!)
lava java by @stocious (He's being really unprofessional. Mickey might not even be gay. He might be hitting on a straight man through takeout cups.)
here's to hoping i'm not what kills you by @crestfallercanyon (After a confrontation gone bad, Mickey and the Gallaghers get Ian to the hospital. And look, Mickey always knew that if the Gallaghers had a will they'd find a way, but being roped into their schemes himself wasn't something he'd planned on signing on for. All the Gallaghers need to know is Mickey's helping out because he's not pure fucking evil. They don't need to know Mickey was scared shitless when Ian got knocked unconscious, Jesus, he can barely admit that to himself. Once Mickey knows Ian's not dead and not dying, he's out of there. Except he can't bring himself to leave.)
to the thawing wind by @gardenerian (Living and working in the icy chill of an endless winter, Ian and his family are assigned to work the farms to bolster food supply. They live quietly enough, following the rules, until Mickey and Mandy Milkovich (with all their secrets) are moved in across the road.)
i'll come meet you where you are by @crestfallercanyon (Mickey comes back from prison with a ring of vicious bruises around his neck and an edge to him Ian doesn't recognize. But he came back. He came back, and now it's time for Ian to meet him halfway.
closing in walls and ticking clocks by c_cups_bitch_u_wish (So, this is happening. Mickey is sitting in the corner of the bedroom on the comfiest fucking chair he’s ever sat in, and his adult self and adult Ian are about to fuck. And he’s going to watch. What's most odd is that this doesn't even feel like the weirdest thing to happen to him today.)
a spark of fire by @lingy910y (“You wanted us to finally have some time alone. You wanted to keep me safe, but you didn’t really care as long as we were together. You didn’t want it to end.” Mickey swallows a lump in his throat. “I…I don’t fuckin’ know.” “But can I, uh, ask you something else?” Ian rubs his thumbs together. “You like me, Mick. You fucking like me.”)
flip fuck? by @gallawitchxx (Mickey’s always thought that Valentine’s Day was fucking gay. But then some dramatic, ginger fuckhead had to move into the room next to his, and steal his hole, his heart, and the attention of his tumblr mutuals. Mickey decides to keep it lowkey when he asks Ian to spend the evening together: You wanna hang out on Tuesday? Ian’s response is quick and gives absolutely nothing away: Sure thing! That big-dicked idiot better remember it’s fucking Valentine’s Day.)
completed:
prelude motel by @whatthebodygraspsnot (When Mickey’s secret spot is infiltrated by an intriguing stranger, all the warning signs are there. Despite the voice in the back of his head telling him to disengage, he can’t help but bite off more than he can chew, running straight back to the spot and the stranger when a job leaves him injured. Enter: the Prelude Motel - where, for the next three days, Mickey finds himself hiding from more than just his pursuers.)
garden song (series) by @gardenerian (two gorgeous fics about ian's bipolar, about hope, healing, and tomatoes)
better by anomalously (It's been ten years since Ian's seen Mickey.)
in your love by @sgtmickeyslaughter (Mickey had been out of prison for 2 years and Ian never would have known until they ran into one another on a random night in May. Ian fights for the love they shared while Mickey fights for the life he built, as they both struggle with shame and guilt from their shared past it becomes clear that they cannot help but be drawn to what is bright and beautiful between them.)
whumptober 2023 (series) by @sam-loves-seb (21 beautiful fics of angst & hurt/comfort)
out of nowhere by @suzy-queued (Ian should have never offered to hide his father's stash of gold. Now he's stuck living on a deserted piece of land in the woods, alone, losing his sanity. Mickey wants nothing more than to disappear — from prison, from his family, from the entire world. If only he knew where to get his hands on a cool million. The Gallagher gold. Mickey wants it. Ian will do anything to protect it. Who will cave first?)
all these things i have left to say to you by @crestfallercanyon (After all this time that Ian's been missing, he leaves a tape recorder on Mickey's pillow. And on it? An hour of pure, unfiltered, Ian audio that is all, apparently, dedicated to him.)
wips:
keys to my heart by @milkovichrules (Ian finds his stable college life getting difficult when a new neighbour moves into the dorms.)
intro to quantum dating by @spoonfulstar (another college au) (one of my fave fics of all time!!)
the ink is a witness to this by @palepinkgoat (six chapters about the stories tattoos can hold and hide.)
order up by @heymacy (Ian and Mickey work together at a Chicago diner. They like to push each other's buttons - all their buttons. How long until the dam finally breaks?)
second chapters by @squidyyy23 (When Mickey’s PO assigns him a job at the local library, he’s pleasantly surprised—not that he’d ever admit it. Practically lived in the prison library, and what better way to start his new life than with a career he might actually enjoy. And when he meets the charming, clever, utterly fuckable, redheaded children’s librarian, well, shit just keeps getting better and better. Mickey’s definitely not interested in anything serious right now, but what’s the harm in a little fun?)
electric blue by @goodkwuestion (Paramedic Ian Gallagher knows true love exists. He's not going to settle until he finds it either, no matter how much his friends and family roll their eyes at him. Mickey Milkovich, on the other hand, isn't sure about all that stuff. He's an engineer with a long to-do list, and chasing rainbows isn't on it. He'll never say no to a good time and a pretty face though. When they meet, it will feel like kismet, something inevitable that neither of them can shake. Honestly though, who would want to? Falling in love can be the easiest thing in the world, especially when the whole universe is rooting for you... That's if the whole universe is rooting for you.)
ficlets:
all of @heymrspatel's drabbles, especially this one of ian being self-conscious about his body
docks scene & birthday suit gardening ficlets by @metalheadmickey
all of @lupeloto's sweet & domestic ficlets
@sam-loves-seb's meta about ian being the moon and mickey being the sun
ian's birthday ficlet & 31 ways we never meet (a.u.gust 2023 ficlets) by @callivich
airport confessions by @dynamic-power
gallavich drabbles by @whatthebodygraspsnot
all of @howlinchickhowl's a.u.gust 2023 ficlets!
(if you made it this far, i also write fics occasionally too so here's a self-promo lol)

WC: 1.6K
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The line in Java Hut’s is incredibly long this morning but it’s not that big of a deal because you have about another hour before you have to be in class to take your history final. And since campus is only a few blocks away, you pull out your book as you stand in line to wait.
Having just started the book last night before bed, you were eager to pick it back up this morning. Unfortunately, you’d forced yourself to put it down and go to sleep so you’d be well rested for your last final of the semester. But since you’ve got the time to kill…
About five minutes into reading, you hear a familiar deep voice in your ear. “Last minute studying for your final?”
You look behind you and see your history professor, Cody. The incredibly hot professor who you’ve been crushing on since the first day of the semester.
“Oh, hi.” You feel yourself go warm in the face and show him your book you’re reading. “No, actually. The Secret History.”
“Good read.” He smiles that heart clenching smile and you nod in agreement. “First time reading it?”
You nod. “Mmhm.”
“You’ll have to let me know what you think.” He smiles down at you and you hope to god that your jaw isn’t on the floor.
“Uh, yeah. I definitely will.” You tell him, trying your best to not freeze up.
You’ve never spoken to him outside of the classroom so this is new to you. And despite how uncool you sound right now, you rather like it. It’s way tamer than the fantasies you have at night of him.
“Next!” The barista breaks you out of the spell his warm brown eyes are holding over you.
“Right.” You chuckle, turning to order.
“Ours are together.” Cody tells her from behind you.
You can feel his warm chest against your back and it takes everything in you to not lean into him. He smells warm like sandalwood and leather.
You look up at him and start to protest but the look he gives you looks final and you nod, murmuring your thanks with burning cheeks as you turn back to the barista.
“A large hot chocolate, please.” You smile.
She smirks, knowingly at you.
“Hot chocolate, huh? Sure. Make it two. Thanks.” He bumps his elbow into your side, teasingly.
As you move out of the line to go wait for your drinks, you find a sofa by the window, noticing the snow coming down. It’s your favorite time of the year and you’d do anything to live somewhere where it looked like this all year round.
“Not a coffee drinker or is it just a seasonal thing?” He rests an arm around the back of the sofa, which also happens to be around you as well.
You’re not complaining.
“No, I’m afraid not. Just a little too bitter for me.” You shrug, pulling your foot up under you, making you accidentally lean a little closer to him.
He doesn’t seem to mind, thankfully.
“Too bitter…” He muses, clearly amused.
You’re trying to figure out what to say to him without sounding like an idiot. He’s probably one of the smartest people you’ve ever met and you’ve found yourself dreading the end of the semester, because that means you’re not going to see him again.
“I’m… going to miss your class.” You tell him, looking from the window back to him.
“I’m going to miss having you in my class.” He smiles, kindly.
“Eh. You’ll have another star pupil next semester.” You shrug, hiding a grin.
He chuckles. “I suppose so…”
Your stomach drops at his words.
“But that’s not why I’m going to miss you.” He leans in, whispering.
You feel your lips part and suddenly his lips are so close to yours when you turn your head, you’re caught off guard by the barista calling out “Cody!”
“Be right back.” He winks and walks back toward the counter.
You try to still your pounding heart before he comes back, to no avail. Does he know the effect he has on people? On you?
Of course he does.
When he sits back down, a little further away than before, he hands you your hot chocolate with a playful look.
“Here’s your warm chocolate milk.” He grins.
His smile sets your insides on fire and you shake your head with a soft laugh.
“You tease but at least it’s better than that bitter bean water you drink.” You shrug, making him laugh boisterously.
It’s probably the best sound you’ve ever heard, you think to yourself while you softly blow into the mug before taking a sip. When you look at him again, his eyes are on your lips and you take a napkin off the coffee table and dab at your lips.
“Do I have something on my face?” Self consciousness creeps in and he gently pulls your hand away from your face.
“No, your face is perfect.” He rushes out, then pauses when he realizes what he said and lets go of your hand. “I’m sorry.”
You shake your head, letting him know it's okay.
Does he feel this spark too?
“Growing up, I lived with my grandparents. I was incredibly close with my grandmother…” You start to tell him. “The first day that the weather turned cold in November, she would keep us home from school. She called it a mental health day and would put on Christmas movies and make a bunch of baked treats and hot chocolate of course. She never drank coffee.”
“Wow. Sounds like she was better than me.” He smiles, teasingly.
“Different instances. She didn’t need the coffee.”
“And I do?”
“To grade a couple hundred papers? Probably.” You shrug with a smirk.
“So, I take it that teaching isn’t in your future.” He sips his hot chocolate, trying to hide a face of distaste.
It’s clear this man survives on coffee.
“I’m sure you could probably get them to spike it with coffee if you ask nicely.” You tease.
“Chocolate coffee does not sound enticing.” He shakes his head, but he glances up at the barista, clearly debating it.
“I think that might be the only way someone could get me to drink coffee.”
“Hold on.” He puts his finger up with a smirk and walks up to the counter where they call out orders and flags down the barista, saying something to her that makes her glance at you with raised eyebrows and he shrugs.
You look at him with narrowed eyes and he throws you a wink, making you feel like the hot chocolate is suddenly burning you from the inside out. You glance at your phone, realizing you have thirty minutes until you have to get to class, and as if he has the same thought process, he glances at his watch and then back at you.
He pulls out his phone, leaning on the counter waiting for the barista to come back and types something out for a moment before putting it back into his pocket.
Your phone chimes, indicating an email and you open it.
Hello World History 401 students,
Out of the goodness of my heart, and in the spirit of the holidays, today’s final will be canceled. Enjoy your break.
-Prof. Cody
Your head whips up so fast, you nearly give yourself whiplash. He just canceled the final… To spend time with you? Your chest clenches just in time for him to come back with two cups of coffee and he hands you one. Yours is significantly lighter than his and you debate which question to ask him first.
“I told her to make it taste the least bit like ‘bitter bean water’ she could.” He grins.
“You canceled the final.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“I’ve always envied Santa Claus. Giving people what they really want for Christmas.” He shrugs, taking his cup of black coffee, pouring it into the hot chocolate and stirring it.
You watch him take a sip and he sighs with dramatic delight.
“Much better.” He nods.
“Cody. The final.” You can’t even focus on the hot chocolate.
He shrugs. “I’m enjoying our conversation.”
“You can’t just cancel a final-”
“Oh really? Why did I go through eight years of school, if not to be able to make some kids’ day by canceling a final?”
“Cody…”
He sighs your name and the way he does sends your heart into a fit of wild pittering that you’re pretty sure you’re not going to recover from.
“Listen. If you really wanna take the final, here.” He pulls out a small stack of papers out of his briefcase and hands them to you. “But, you’ve already passed in my mind, so I don’t know if it’s even worth the hassle.”
Your eyes skim over the page. “A… B… A…”
He snatches the papers back, shoving them back into his case. “Insufferable.”
“All I hear is that I’m the best student and deserve an A.” You shrug, finally taking a sip of your hot chocolate coffee and then immediately spit it right back out. “This is awful.”
“What?! It’s barely coffee!” His eyes crinkle, hearteningly.
“Nope. Bad.” You shake your head, putting the mug down on the coffee table. “We just ruined a perfectly good cup of hot chocolate.”
“I’ll buy you another.” He offers.
You shake your head. “Not necessary. I have a different idea.”
You stand up and put your coat on, slinging your bag over your shoulder and offering your hand out for him.
“Where are we going?”
“Just trust me.”
He grabs his stuff and takes your hand with a wide grin. “Lead the way.”

i probs will make a page like that once i am free from java jail but here are some stuff people might know about si.ffrin in the pok.émon AU where the game happens & it turns out the countries mentioned in the game all disappeared due to wishcraft but the finale of the game somehow made them re-appear ( though si.f's home island remains forgotten & nobody can recall it )
he & his party members are known as the saviors of vau.garde.
it's known that he wears an eyepatch.
people would know that whatever happened was tied to a whole country being frozen in time, the exact details of what the saviors did, besides fighting their way to a person known as the king is not known .
it's probably known that their main partner is a zorua named ciel.
that the people of the re-appeared countries cannot perceive color.
over time it becomes common knowledge that they use he / they pronouns.
less commonly known details
even the people of vau.garde cannot tell where si.ffrin is from
there is some talk & rumors about something more happening besides a simple battle against the king as some people in the town of dorm.ont did see an "unsettling shade" that simply gave the impression of the world ending. people also smelled burned caramel.
little rumors about si.ffrin having been spotted with a jir.achi & cel.ebi & something about a 'star person'
that si.ffrin is actually quite shy. in that verse interviews would probably be common place & people assume he's rather aloof or not interested in giving interviews ...truth is they are an anxious person.
if one digs deep enough they might find snippets in interviews where more personal quirks are revealed, like bonnie blurting out that si.ffrin is a bit of a glutton.

pdude (any) headcanons?
You said any so Java and Novel (Postal: Special Delivery) from my AU then.
Java is probably the most normal Dude all things considered.
-He never did find his missing car.
-Presumably bought a new house since his old one was burned down and all, probably in a new neighborhood too.
-Almost as strong as Corkscrew.
-Got a nice monetary reward for exposing the (dead) mayor's corruption.
Novel either escaped custody or was released when he turned 21. The second book based on Postal 2 never got written so that is just perpetually up in the air, he never gives a straight answer regardless.
-His family is a sore spot; bring up his mom and he'll fly into a rage because of all her bullshit. Bring up his sister and he'll just...shut down for a while. He is unaware that he has a dead twin brother and he misses his Uncle Dave.
-Still skateboards, is still a nerd deep down who could've gone to Harvard had everything not went to hell.
-Honestly he should get the hell away from the Arizona desert but he can't exactly afford to travel to another state.
-Eventually meets Java who takes pity on him and lets him stick around his house; they end up being unlikely friends.

Business & Pleasure
Tumblr media
Part 8
Summary: At an unexpected lunch with colleagues, you struggle to keep your secret intact as new possible suspicions over your relationship with the boss arise.
Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield x Fem!Reader (Modern AU)
Words: 2,5K
Warnings: 18+
A/N: This is part 8 of this fic. You can read all the previous parts here.
The last day of the week arrives and with the weekend at our doorstep, Friday feelings seem to be sparkling in everyone's blood. Despite the early hour, people gather in the coffee lounge area to enjoy a cup of java together with one of Bombur’s highly desired bagels. What from the beginning were only two standard choices, have expanded to a small buffet with everything from cream cheese bagels with prosciutto and avocado to fully vegan alternatives. The man insists on delivering them in person, with a little help from one or two of his employees. I have noticed that he often stays a bit longer than required and talks to mainly Thorin or Balin when he’s here. Breakfast on Fridays is one of the most appreciated recurring events that take place at the office, as part of the company’s vision in creating an overall inclusive working environment. And today everybody appears to be at the office; the lounge is packed with laughing colleagues, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the air. Someone has lit a few candles, the many spotlights in the ceiling are slightly dimmed, and soft lounge music seeps from the hidden speakers. I try to mingle, as usual, and manage to talk with both the head of HR as well as a few of the newest members in our sales organization.
I have looked forward to this day ever since Thorin left, and even though it was far from one of his longest trips, it was enough for me to miss him incredibly. My strong feelings scare me a little; falling head over heels for my boss was not something I planned, and yet here I am, excitedly waiting for his arrival. I feel vulnerable in a way I have not felt in a very long time, and even if we try to take things slow, my treacherous heart has already whispered things I do not dare to say out loud.
Eventually, people return to their meetings, computers, and phone calls, the constant sound of voices dies, and just as I place my mug in the washing machine, I hear Kili’s voice behind me.
”I just spoke with Fili. He and Thorin had a change in plans and rebooked their flights. They should be here around lunch. Fili said he has interesting news about a future marketing collaboration and I’m dying to hear them.” Kili swallows the remains of his coffee and frowns, then he lowers his voice and casts a glance around us. The lounge is thankfully empty. ”I tried to get him to talk about Michele but he avoided that topic. Maybe Thorin was around, I don’t know.”
”Their last meeting was canceled on short notice.” I reply, but instantly realize that I’ve said too much. I bite my lip and mentally slap myself; sometimes my brain needs to filter my thoughts better before my mouth speaks.
”Yeah, I guess so. How did you know?” Kili looks at me with a curious expression in his hazel eyes. As the younger of the two brothers, and now subordinate to Fili, I have understood that he’s used to not being told everything, but there is no judgment in his eyes.
”Oh, well… Thorin filled me in on some details before they left.” I lie and hope he doesn’t ask further questions. And he told me last night when he called to say goodnight.
”Right. Anyway, if you’re not busy during lunch, you’re welcome to return that meal today at Bombur’s. I heard he’s making meatloaf and that’s too good to miss.”
”How can you think of lunch now? We just had bagels!” I welcome the change in subject and Kili throws me a grin.
”I burn my calories fast, you know.” He gives me an exaggerated wink, and even if I prefer not to know, he makes his point very clear.
***
A few hours later, I watch Kili use his fork to stab the oversized meatloaf, and his joy over Bombur’s skills can be read all over his face. I have to agree, Bombur never seems to fail in the kitchen, and as part of the mysterious circle that centers around Thorin and includes a strange mix of people from Erebor Corporation, Kili receives special treatment every time. He has just started to explain one of his most recent projects when excited voices raise by the door. I turn around, only to see Bombur making his way over to the entrance, catching the well-known, blond man who just entered the restaurant, in a friendly hug. Kili waves enthusiastically and finally his brother sees him. With a broad grin he approaches our table, holds up a thumb to Bombur who loudly asks if the newcomer wants lunch, and then, after a graceful bow, he takes the seat next to me.
”I thought I would find you here.”
Kili points with his knife to the meatloaf almost covered in gravy and grins. ”You know it!” He takes another mouth full. ”How was the trip?”
”Good, rewarding, and as expected, I guess, in that sense.” Fili starts to explain how their work will elucidate a special matter from a marketing point of view, but Kili is impatient and lifts his hand to silence him.
”You never answered me how Michele is doing.” Kili looks innocently at his older brother, who glances sideways at me.
”Kili, I—”
”She knows, I told her.”
”You really can’t help yourself, can you?” Fili sighs and looks annoyed, but starts laughing when Kili tilts his head like a regretful puppy. ”Michele is fine, just busy or I would have taken her out for lunch instead of looking for your sorry ass.” He turns to me. ”Please excuse me, my brother is a bad influence on my language.”
”It’s fine, I think I know him well enough to safely say I agree with you.”
”Hey!” Kili tries to look offended.
Like a peacemaker, Bombur arrives with a plate of steaming meatloaf, and when Fili exclaims his love for the chef, he gets a not-so-gentle pat on the shoulder in return.
Then the humble restaurant owner excuses himself and disappears back to his pots and pans.
”So..?” Kili lowers his voice. ”Any news?”
Fili, obviously keen to torture his nosy brother, takes a large piece of food, chews slowly and hums approvingly at its taste, then nods. He’s right, the food is—as always at Bombur’s—delicious. I can’t help but think how young Kili appears to be when he’s impatiently looking at his brother. It’s like catching a rare glimpse of their youth, when Fili most certainly had to stop Kili from unwrapping all Christmas gifts the second they were discovered under the tree.
”Thorin knows.” Fili finally reveals.
”What?” Kili almost chokes on his beloved lunch. ”Did Balin tell him after all?”
”No, I did.” Fili looks calmly at his brother, who stares back at him.
”You did?”
”Yeah.” Fili shudders. ”I thought it was best if he heard it from me. It was not an easy decision to tell him, but he took it surprisingly well. I was certain he was going to lecture me at first, but it was as if he thought of something and changed his approach as we spoke.”
”Wow!”
Fili looks pensively at Kili. ”It was not like him. And to be honest, I don’t really recognize him at all. He was so… reasonable during the whole trip. It’s not the Thorin I know.”
”Are you sure he’s well? I mean, people who are sick sometimes start to value new things in life.”
”You’re an idiot sometimes, Kili.” Fili shakes his head. ”Thorin is fine. Have you ever seen anyone in better shape, at his age I mean.”
”At his age?” Kili grins. ”I’ll tell him you said that!”
”Still, there is nothing wrong with him. But something has changed and it’s definitely for the better.”
The smallest heat spreads over my cheekbones, and I pray the brothers will not notice. I don’t know if I—or more precisely, what Thorin and I do—have affected him in any way, but the logical part of my brain tells me it can’t be a coincidence. I have noticed a small change in Thorin as well, but I thought it was my imagination playing tricks on me, since I know we’re seeing each other. I poke at my food; eating just became harder. When Kili suddenly speaks my name, I meet his gaze and quickly understand that I missed his question.
”Sorry, what did you say?” I put on a confident smile.
”I said, what do you think? You work close to him. Have you noticed anything… unusual?” He gives me his most conspiratorial smile and even if it makes me nervous, I can’t stifle my laugh.
”No, not really. His personal life doesn’t concern me.” I’m such a bad liar.
”Who said anything about his personal life?” Fili raises an eyebrow, and he resembles Thorin so much when he turns to gaze at me. ”But you have an interesting point.” Damn, I did it again!
I don’t believe in angels, but when Fili’s phone starts ringing and saves me from making the situation even worse, I send thanks to whoever is watching over me. The way his eyes shine as he sees the name of the caller says it all. In a hushed voice he answers, promises to come by her desk after lunch and ends the call with a happy smile that reaches his eyes.
”You’re in deep trouble, brother. You should see yourself right now.”
”Falling in love is not so bad Kili, you should try it sometimes.”
”And miss all the fun? No thanks!”
”Grow up little brother. One day, when you’re old enough, you’ll understand that keeping a woman takes a lot more effort than getting under her skirt once.”
Kili makes a face, lets out his most carefree laugh and turns his attention to the remains of what used to be a magnificent meatloaf. We don’t return to the discussion about Thorin, and I’m almost relieved when we say goodbye to Bombur and head back to the office. A detour to the coffee lounge is mandatory after lunch and Fili immediately occupies both taps on the machine with his cups. One for him and one for the green-eyed woman who clearly has stolen his heart.
Familiar footsteps approach the lounge, and it takes a great deal of willpower not to spin around too quickly when Thorin’s rumbling voice fills the area. As always, he is in full control of his expression when he greets our trio, but a hint of a smile appears on his lips when he sees Fili grabbing the two filled cups. One with milk and one black coffee. Then Thorin turns to me.
”I want a word with you, can you make it now?” I blink and nod. Did he just invite me to his office in front of both of his nephews? After what we talked about during lunch, I would have preferred if Thorin could tread more lightly. But Kili doesn’t seem to react to his words, he only asks Thorin a polite question about the trip. Fili excuses himself, fully focused on carrying coffee to his beloved, and I have to remind my spinning brain that a short briefing with Thorin now makes perfect sense, and not only for our aching bodies.
I follow Thorin to his office, admiring his broad shoulders and back in that impeccable navy suit he wears today. His hair is a little longer at his neck. He was frustrated before he left, for he had forgotten to book an appointment and his barber couldn’t make room for him, but I assured him that it looks good when it’s longer as well. I love touching his hair, and even if I don’t think he will let it grow longer, I enjoy the feeling under my hands. The jacket covers most of his behind, but I know how well those trousers suit him and I can see the shape of his strong thighs as he walks.
He doesn’t look back, he just pushes the handle down and walks inside, leaving it to me to close the door to his office. The moment the door is shut, he pulls me close. His lips crash against mine, and his kiss is hungry, demanding and rough. I whimper against his lips as he presses me tightly against him as if he wants to hinder me from escaping from his grip. The way his hands eagerly explore my lower back and find their way under my top is enough to send pulsating heat to my core. I kiss him back, pouring all my need and longing into the kiss, hoping he can sense what I feel in this moment of reunion. This is what I want and need, him, here and now. But he breaks the kiss too soon for my liking. He rests his forehead against mine and softly pants my name.
”Please tell me that you will sleep at my place tonight.”
”If you want me to.”
His hands grip my waist under the smooth fabric of my top. ”What do you think?” he murmurs huskily and his alluring smile before he kisses me again is a lovely dark promise of a long night.
Suddenly he releases me with an apologetic look in his beautiful azure eyes, and pulls his hand through his hair in a frustrated gesture I know by heart. Then he adjusts his jacket. ”I have to meet Dwalin now and discuss the legal aspects of the issue you two worked out. Believe me, I would much rather have prefered to pin you against the wall.”
”I guess you’ll have to keep that thought...” I tease.
”Until later then,” Thorin replies and I tuck my top back in place.
”Maybe you should get a large mirror in here, so I can check how I look before I leave, and don’t have to rely on you.”
”I can see many benefits with that type of installation.” Thorin smiles slyly. I gently smack him on his upper arm, and he chuckles darkly.
”You’re an animal! But honestly, we can’t keep meeting for sex in your office. People will eventually notice.”
”I know I am, but you like it, don’t you?” He pulls me close again, hovering his lips over mine. ”Or is the bright fire in your eyes only a facade?” His lips brush against mine, teasing me. Then the bastard withdraws with a grin. ”I’ll see you tonight.”
I feel like I’m burning inside as I leave his office, with him a few steps behind. He walks over to the elevator, which will take him to the building’s most secret place—the surveillance room—and I return to my tea, which I forgot the same second Thorin entered the lounge. The abandoned tiny bag, shaped like a pyramid and filled with green tea and chamomile flowers, still rests on the counter.
As I sink back into my leather chair, I let out a delighted sigh. Thorin’s hands still burn under my top, and the memory of his kisses will keep my spirit up for the rest of the afternoon. He’s back.

Found Family AU: Present [Emptober 12th]
got another one of these done! of course, I'm still so far behind but I'll catch up eventually. I've been having a hard time with ideas but I think I'm finally over my writer's block [probably because I'm avoiding starting a Java edition survival world]
I think I want to write another of these days with Alinar in mind, you know, get to know the elf that turned his back on his little brother. but we'll see. I do plan on writing a couple of the days from other characters' point of view - one with Scott is going to be coming up soon.
anyway, hope y'all enjoy Day 12!
-
Present
it has to be perfect.
if it isn't perfect then it isn't fit for her.
she deserves the best, their gnome, their child, their daughter.
she deserves only the absolute best.
so it has to be perfect.
can't have any flaws.
maybe it's their nature to believe such a thing, or maybe it's their elven origins creeping out from wherever it was hiding - elves are notorious for beautiful flawless adornments, if it's not perfect then it's worthless.
whichever it is, it's a hell of an attitude and it's making Xornoth feel like complete shit for not being up to old standards - they're not even an elf anymore! they shouldn't care about perfection!
Shrub won't mind if their gift isn't flawless, she won't care. she'll love it no matter how shitty it looks, she'll still love them even if they fail.
they know this.
they. know. this.
and yet. and yet they can't allow themself to slack. they can't allow themself not to give 110% - 150% - 200% - all the percents.
the band has to be perfect.
and it will be.
Xornoth works tirelessly in the make-shift forge, hardly rests while they cast the gold, shape it to design, then melt it down again and recast.
their gnome checks in on them from time to time, making sure they're okay, but she leaves them alone for the most part once she sees how focused they are. they would love to spend time with her again, it feels like its been forever since the two of them rested or talked or tended the garden together.
but they can't stop.
Xornoth. can't. stop.
not until it's perfect.
they don't know how long they work - could be days, could be weeks - time has no meaning in this world. but they get the band finished and engraved.
then comes enchanting the piece.
that should be the easy part.
but it's just as difficult with so few resources and such limited magics.
maybe they should call on their god?
they haven't heard from Exor in so long, not since...
not since they failed the Stag.
the demon sighs.
𝖜𝖍𝖆𝖙 𝖎𝖘 𝖎𝖙 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖉𝖊𝖘𝖎𝖗𝖊? [what is it you desire?]
the demon startles at the voice. it's been so long since Exor spoke to them. they thought He had gone into hibernation.
𝕴 𝖍𝖆𝖛𝖊 𝖇𝖚𝖙 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖎𝖓𝖛𝖔𝖐𝖊𝖉 𝖒𝖞 𝖓𝖆𝖒𝖊. 𝖜𝖍𝖆𝖙 𝖎𝖘 𝖎𝖙 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖉𝖊𝖘𝖎𝖗𝖊? [I have but you invoked my name. what is it you desire?]
Xornoth closes their eyes, exhaling. the God's presence chills the air around them, His words are shadows that creep through their mind, burning and freezing and sending an itch through their system telling them to run.
"I̍̅̀̎̊ ṇ̤͛̒̍ẹ̿͋̒̕ẹ̿͋̒̕ḑ̴̞͛̒ ḿ̬̏ͤͅā̤̓̍͘ĝ̽̓̀͑ỉ͔͖̜͌c͕͗ͤ̕̕," they breathe, "ẹ̿͋̒̕ṇ̤͛̒̍c͕͗ͤ̕̕ḣ̖̻͛̓ā̤̓̍͘ṇ̤͛̒̍t̲̂̓ͩ̑ḿ̬̏ͤͅẹ̿͋̒̕ṇ̤͛̒̍t̲̂̓ͩ̑s̠҉͍͊ͅ t̲̂̓ͩ̑o̯̱̊͊͢ p̞̈͑̚͞r̴̨̦͕̝o̯̱̊͊͢t̲̂̓ͩ̑ẹ̿͋̒̕c͕͗ͤ̕̕t̲̂̓ͩ̑ ḿ̬̏ͤͅy҉̃̀̋̑ ḑ̴̞͛̒ā̤̓̍͘ư̡͕̭̇ĝ̽̓̀͑ḣ̖̻͛̓t̲̂̓ͩ̑ẹ̿͋̒̕r̴̨̦͕̝." ["I need magic" * "enchantments to protect my daughter."]
the Stag probably already knew about their companion, but if He didn't, He doesn't say anything. instead, He says, 𝖒𝖞 𝖕𝖔𝖜𝖊𝖗𝖘 𝖆𝖗𝖊 𝖑𝖎𝖒𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖉 𝖇𝖚𝖙 𝖛𝖊𝖗𝖞 𝖜𝖊𝖑𝖑. 𝕴 𝖜𝖎𝖑𝖑 𝖌𝖗𝖆𝖓𝖙 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖉𝖊𝖘𝖎𝖗𝖊. 𝖚𝖘𝖊 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖌𝖎𝖋𝖙 𝖜𝖎𝖘𝖊𝖑𝖞, 𝕮𝖍𝖆𝖒𝖕𝖎𝖔𝖓. [my powers are limited but very well. I will grant your desire. use the gift wisely, Champion.]
"t̲̂̓ͩ̑ḣ̖̻͛̓ā̤̓̍͘ṇ̤͛̒̍ḳ̯͍̑ͦ y҉̃̀̋̑o̯̱̊͊͢ư̡͕̭̇, ḿ̬̏ͤͅy҉̃̀̋̑ L̸̖̽̌͂o̯̱̊͊͢r̴̨̦͕̝ḑ̴̞͛̒." ["thank you, my Lord."]
and with that, the presence of their God leaves them once again, and leaves the demon feeling cold in His wake, as if they had been standing naked in a snow storm.
Xornoth shakes off that feeling and focusses on the new feelings of magic - the buzzing, dizzying, almost euphoric sparks that alight inside of them. it's more magic than they've felt in a long time.
it's precious, this magic, and they will indeed use the gift wisely.
-
if the band took a long time, the enchantments take even longer.
their focus is razor-sharp, their intent evident, their resolve unwavering. any distraction, even the smallest interruption, and all will be for not. they've asked their gnome to leave them in peace for the time being and she, with reluctance and concern written plainly on her face, does as they wish.
they place enchantment upon enchantment upon enchantment on the band - protection and resistance, health and strength, and a number of other things that would make sure she would be safe from any and all harm.
only the best for their child.
it's a long, strenuous process but they get it done. they finish the band, at long last, and finally leave the forge and enter their shelter for the first time in forever. the band couldn't be more perfect if they tried.
they find that there's a new doorway on the adjacent wall and that the main room that once was their resting place and kitchen is now more of a foyer, however small a space it might be. they peek through the new doorway and find a short hall with three other openings - one on either side and one at the end.
the room on the right houses a small kitchen with a table and chairs on one wall and their cooking pit on the other with a chimney over the top. she's not in there so they check the left.
the left room looks to be a study mixed with a museum - the treasures they've collected on their adventures sit either in piles or on rickety looking shelves. Shrub's books and papers that she's collected from fortresses and bastions cover the entirety of a makeshift table. still, no Shrub.
so, they check the room at the end, their new bedroom it seems. the mushroom block bed has doubled in size, decorations of weapons and the more precious treasures line the walls, and a few of their plants hang from the ceiling.
Shrub is laying in bed, sleeping soundly.
perhaps they should rest as well, even if they can't sleep.
Xornoth approaches the bed silently and as carefully as they can, they slide onto the other side, holding the band carefully in their hand. they'll give it to her later when she wakes.
"Dad?" the gnome asks, her voice groggy and her eyes barely cracked as she turns to look at them.
"s̠҉͍͊ͅo̯̱̊͊͢r̴̨̦͕̝r̴̨̦͕̝y҉̃̀̋̑ ỉ͔͖̜͌f̵͖̜̉ͅ I̍̅̀̎̊ w̦̺̐̐͟o̯̱̊͊͢ḳ̯͍̑ͦẹ̿͋̒̕ y҉̃̀̋̑o̯̱̊͊͢ư̡͕̭̇," they reply, their voice quiet. ["sorry if I woke you"]
"M'nah, is fine." she yawns. "Did you finish what you were working on?"
they nod, "I̍̅̀̎̊ ḑ̴̞͛̒ỉ͔͖̜͌ḑ̴̞͛̒," they roll onto their side to face her. "w̦̺̐̐͟o̯̱̊͊͢ư̡͕̭̇l̙͖̑̾ͣḑ̴̞͛̒ y҉̃̀̋̑o̯̱̊͊͢ư̡͕̭̇ l̙͖̑̾ͣỉ͔͖̜͌ḳ̯͍̑ͦẹ̿͋̒̕ t̲̂̓ͩ̑o̯̱̊͊͢ s̠҉͍͊ͅẹ̿͋̒̕ẹ̿͋̒̕?" the moment they ask, she's bright-eyed and smiling and nodding, it's kinda really cute. they reach for her hand, the left one, take it gently in their claws, and slide the band onto her thin wrist - it shrinks to better fit thanks to the magic ingrained into it. ["I did" * "would you like to see?"]
Shrub's hand is released and her eyes turn towards the new adornment. encircling her wrist is a two-inch wide seamless band made of gold. there's multiple engravings delicately carved into the gold - apples and mushrooms, stags and poppies, a small figure and a tall figure holding hands - and they all compliment each other and blend into one perfect image.
and the amount of detail within such a small thing? no wonder Dad was working for so long.
"ḑ̴̞͛̒o̯̱̊͊͢ y҉̃̀̋̑o̯̱̊͊͢ư̡͕̭̇ l̙͖̑̾ͣỉ͔͖̜͌ḳ̯͍̑ͦẹ̿͋̒̕ ỉ͔͖̜͌t̲̂̓ͩ̑?" their voice is soft, hesitant in the question, nervous almost. ["do you like it?"]
she smiles and shifts closer to the demon, wrapping her arms around them as best as she can. "it's beautiful, Dad, thank you," she buries her face in their chest, her heart swelling with emotion - to gift someone gold, especially made by your own hands, is a very special and important thing. "I'll treasure it forever."
Xornoth relaxes at her words, they knew she would love their present, and wraps their arms around her as well, holding her as close as they possibly can.
no more words need to be said.
the two of them lay there, content and happy, and for the first time in a long time, Xornoth finds themself drifting off. they must have worn themself out, used up too much magic, they think as the world of dreams calls to them.
Shrub is close behind, having worried about her dad for far too long. she yawns once and closes her eyes. the last thing she sees before sleep claims her is the gold band on her wrist, a perfect match to the poppy and stag rings on her right hand.

Coffee and Coding
A PangxWave Coffee Shop Au...
Wave was on the hunt for Wifi. That’s all he needed. He was in the middle of an extremely complicated coding assignment when his internet crashed at his apartment. If he didn’t get the assignment done in time, there was no telling what his Professor was going to think of him and he certainly wasn’t going to get the TA position he wanted so badly.
He stopped out of his apartment building and stalked the streets for a ‘free wifi’ sign. The first place he came across was a coffee shop. He wasn’t particularly a Java consumer but he was kind of desperate so he walked inside, his computer bag slung over his shoulder and walked up to the counter. He looked up at the menu and decided to order something completely at random because he had no idea what all of the different drinks were. To Wave, coffee was coffee. There didn’t need to anything fancy about it.
And yet, when he looked down from the menu, he almost dropped his computer bag and his order flew from his mind. The young man standing behind the counter was smiling at him so openly and unabashedly that it made Wave’s breath hitch. No one, especially not a complete stranger, had looked at him this way before. Wave’s eyes fell to the Barista’s name tag, which read: ‘Pang’.
When Wave did not immediately share his order, Pang smirked slightly and muttered, “Do you know what you want? I know our menu can be kind of overwhelming…”
“Uh….” Wave usually prided himself on being articulate but he could not seem to string a coherent sentence together.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I just started working here but, if you trust me, I can just make something and bring it out to you.” Pang suggested gently, noticing that Wave seemed to be indecisive.
Wave nodded slowly and held out phone to pay by ‘tap’ but Pang held out a hand to stop him. Pang explained, “You seem stressed. It’s on me. I’ll just cash it out as one of my practice drinks but, in return, you have to tell me how it is. Deal?”
“Deal.” Wave confirmed, still in a bit of a haze because of Pang’s kindness.
Pang nodded toward the tables in the coffee shop. “Go get set up and I’ll bring the drink to you in a bit. Our wifi password is ‘CoffeeisaGift’”
Wave nodded again and made his way over to a table to set up his computer. How the hell was he going to be able to focus on his work when Pang was so naturally distracting? Wave cursed himself for finding the Barista so interesting.
As much as he knew that he needed to get work done, Wave couldn’t help himself. He kept staring back at Pang who had an adorable look of concentration etched across his face as he worked on Wave’s drink. There was only so much Wave could do about concentration when a cute guy was going out of his way to make a drink especially for him. But, alas, he had work to do so he finally refocused and got to work on his assignment.
“Sorry it took so long. I wanted to practice some foam art.”
Wave looked up from his screen to see Pang hovering behind it, a steaming cup of coffee clutched between his hands. Pang had a nervous look on his face, his brows knotted together, and Wave had the sudden urge to reach up and smooth them out. There was no reason for Pang to be nervous - Wave would gladly drink anything he made.
“No problem. I was able to get a lot of work done.” Wave shared and a grin spread across his lips as Pang set down the mug to the side of his computer. “Thanks again for making me the drink.”
Wave looked down and saw a smiley face floating in foam at the top of the drink. . When he looked up, he saw Pang studying him expectantly. Pang obviously wanted to get Wave’s verdict on the drink and even though Wave was not a coffee connoisseur, he was the king of opinions.
He brought the cup to his mouth and took a small sip, making sure that he didn’t burn his tongue. The taste was sweet but subtle and shockingly the taste of coffee was not too prevalent, which Wave actually preferred. He put the cup down and looked up to Pang, “That is delicious. What’s in it?”
A look of amusement crossed Pang’s face and Wave wondered what could possibly be so funny about what he had said. Pang noticed Wave’s confusion and clarified, “You have a foam moustache. It’s kind of adorable.”
Before he could even process Pang’s words, Pang had grabbed a napkin and was wiping Wave’s upper lip with foam. No one, especially a stranger, had been in Wave’s space like this before but Wave was shocked to find himself completely comfortable with Pang’s presence. When Pang was done, he pulled away the napkin.
“It’s a latte with coconut milk.” Pang explained. “Natural sweetness from the milk and because I wasn’t sure if you were okay with lactose or not, I thought I’d go with an alternative.”
“T-thank you.” Wave managed to get out, sliding his hands around the mug once again. “It really is good, though. How long have you been working here?”
Pang seemed surprised that Wave wanted to continue the conversation and he checked behind him to see if there was any new customers lingering. When he saw none, Pang pulled out the chair and sat across from Wave at the table.
“I’ve been working here for just a few weeks.” Pang explained. “I go to Ritdha University so I live in the area too.”
“I go there too!” Wave expressed with a bit more enthusiasm than he probably should have. “What’s your major?”
“Oh, cool! I’m surprised I haven’t seen you around. Political Science.” Pang answered. “I want to be a lawyer or maybe work in government some day. What about you?”
“Computer science.” Wave responded and took another sip of his drink. “Actually, that’s why I’m here… my Wifi from my apartment went down so I had to come here to complete an assignment on time.”
“Oh, you mean you didn’t just come for the coffee?” Pang teased and leaned over to see what Wave was working on. “What’s the assignment?”
“Coding…” Wave felt his cheeks get hot. “Uh… it’s not that interesting…Geeky stuff.”
“That’s not geeky.” Pang sat back down and respected Wave’s privacy. “I think there’s nothing more intriguing than someone who is openly passionate about what they do, especially when it’s something that most people might not understand.”
Wave felt himself relax significantly because of Pang’s words. Wave tried to recall a time where he had instantly felt so connected to someone and couldn’t think of anything. There was something about Pang’s smile and energy that put Wave at ease.
“Why do you want to be in Politics?” Wave wondered, wanting to divert the conversation away from himself but also wanting to know more about Pang.
Pang got a serious look on his face and chewed his lip for a moment, clearly trying to put his thoughts together before sharing them with Wave. This was a quality that Wave couldn’t help but admire. Pang was really thinking about his response before he shared it.
“I want to help people.” Pang finally answered. “I think that sometimes people don’t have a voice because of certain societal limitations. I want to help people find that voice and help the world become a bit more just and equal.”
Wave was surprised by how mature Pang’s answer was, considering how young he looked. Wave figured they were around the same age. Pang had really thought about it while Wave had chosen technology because he had an affinity for it and had always been told that it would be a lucrative career path. His answer compared to Pang’s seemed juvenile and selfish.
“Wow, we’ve been talking this whole time and I still don’t know you name…” Pang prompted when Wave did not respond right away.
“I’m, uh, Wave.” Wave spat out, having been planning his response and compliment about Pang’s initial answer but felt more comfortable answering Pang’s question anyway.
“I’m Pang.” Pang shared, pointing to his name tag. “But I, uh, guess you already knew that. Anyway, sorry for chatting your ear off, I guess you probably need to get back to work instead of being distracted by an annoying Barista.”
“You’re not annoying.” Wave protested, wanting to make sure that his awkwardness was not coming across as disinterest. “The drink is amazing. Thanks again.”
Pang got up to his feet and smiled at Wave, “Well, I’m glad to hear that I’m not as horrible as I thought I was at making coffee. I should probably get back to work anyway…”
“O-okay.” Wave murmured, slightly disappointed, but he tried to keep his composure neutral.
Pang nodded and made his way back behind the counter and returned to his work tasks. Wave returned to working on his assignment, sipping away at the drink Pang had made him every so often as he got closer and closer to completing it. He was so lost in a world of binary that he did not even notice how dark it was getting outside. When he was finally done, he looked up from the screen and noticed that there no other customers left behind in the coffee shop.
Wave went to take one final sip of his drink and was surprised to find that it had gone cold. He drank it anyway and started to pack his things up, trying to see out of his periphery if Pang was still behind the counter or had already gone off shift. Wave picked up the mug to return it to the counter.
“All done?”
Pang appeared in front of Wave so suddenly that the mug slipped through his fingers in surprise. Thankfully, Pang reacted quickly enough and was able to catch the mug in his hands. Wave winced apologetically as Pang placed the cup on the counter.
“Not so good with your hands, are you?” Pang shared in a suggestive tone and Wave’s eyes grew wide in shock. Pang registered Wave’s reaction and quickly clarified, “I was kidding. Sorry. I shouldn’t be making jokes like that when we’ve only known each other for, like, five minutes.”
Wave’s gaze dropped to the floor to avoid Pang’s but after a quick breath, he looked up again and shared, “No worries. And, yah, I got the assignment done so I can sleep easy tonight… speaking of… are you supposed to be closed already?”
Pang smiled sheepishly and shrugged, “You just looked so focused and I did some extra deep cleaning. I really didn’t mind staying behind a bit later than usual.”
“You didn’t have to do that.” Wave muttered, a bit embarrassed that he had received special treatment and likely inconvenienced Pang.
“I know.” Pang confirmed, staring intently at Wave. “But I wanted to.”
“Oh…” Wave, once again, was taken aback by how straightforward Pang was. There was no BS, Pang seemed to the type of person who went for what they wanted, when they wanted. Wave was quite envious of that.
“Sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable.” Pang shared, “There’s just something about you that makes me want to get to know you more. You’re kind of an enigma, like a mystery I want to solve.”
“N-no it’s okay.” Wave assured him and a soft smile played on his lips. “I’m just not used to this kind of attention, especially not from someone like you…”
“Someone like me?” Pang echoed, clearly confused.
Wave considered his words carefully before responding, “Someone so confident, kind, friendly… I usually only get approached by people who want something from me… like, help on an assignment, want me to fix their computer, that kind of thing….You don’t need help with homework, do you?”
Pang chuckled lightly. “No, I think I’m okay. I’m sorry that’s your experience though. It probably makes it hard for you to trust people…”
“Yah…” Wave agreed, shocked by how quickly Pang seemed to be able to figure him out.
“Well, if you’re willing to take a chance on me, I would love to earn your trust.” Pang stated plainly. “Coffee’s great and all, but, would you maybe want to grab a drink with me sometime?”
Wave was at a complete loss of words. Was Pang, the adorable Barista, asking him out? He didn’t want to jump to conclusions too quickly so he tried to play it cool. He managed to get out, “Um, sure.”
Pang pulled a napkin from the dispenser on the counter and scrawled his number on it before passing it to Wave. “No pressure. Call or text me if you’re interested.”
Wave nodded, in a bit of a daze, and Pang guided him to the front door of the coffee shop, obviously needing to do some other last minute duties to close up the coffee shop. Wave walked through the door and turned to face Pang, who was hovering on the threshold, beaming at Wave.
“Thank you for the drink.” Wave murmured, and felt his cheeks grow hot before he blurted out, “I’ll text you later on tonight.”
Pang’s eyes lit up before he nodded, “See you soon, Wave. I look forward to getting to know more about you…”
With that, Pang disappeared back into the shop and locked the door behind him.
Wave, who had been so determined that the universe was against him when his Wifi stopped working that morning now was quite sure that he was meant to stumble upon that coffee shop on that particular day…
The universe might have taken his Wifi but it had given him the gift of Pang.

"Before he knows it, Phoenix is standing dumbly behind the counter with the burgundy-suited man only a few feet from himself. He remembers that he's supposed to greet others when in uniform.
'A-ah! Good morning, sir! What can I get you?' "
The coffee shop au that no one asked for but were in desperate need of. Phoenix is an art student that needs to pay the bills. He joins the staff at the family-owned Fey and Coffee coffeehouse just east of his apartment on Ivy U's campus. Besides a paycheck, Phoenix expects nothing, and is surprised when he finds himself joining a family and...embarrassingly anxious whenever a certain customer decides to visit the store. He'd never have the guts to flirt on the job, anyway. It's not like the customer is into him too.
Right?
anyway this is a cozy, slow burn pining au so if that's what you're looking for you've COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE, PAL
