Break in
Jay Halstead x reader
summary: when Jay's girlfriend is home alone while he's at Molly's, someone tries to break into their house
Tumblr media
Y/n was looking disinterestedly through the fridge, closing it with a sigh when she couldn't find anything to eat that she felt like. It was a slow night, her workday had been quiet at the hospital, with only a few patients showing up.
Her boyfriend, Jay, had invited her to join him and the rest of the police department at Molly's. However, she refused, wanting him to spend quality time with his friends, feeling that she had already stolen him from them long enough after he took a few days to take care of her after she fell ill.
Detective Chuckles: Is everything okay out there? The guys miss you! Wish you could be here with me :(
The ringing of her cell phone snapped her out of her thoughts, a small chuckle escaping her lips as she read Jay's message. But she couldn't deny the butterflies that invaded her stomach knowing he was thinking about her. Their relationship was relatively recent, but they had never felt stronger love.
Jay once revealed to her that he realized she was the most important person to him when he was called on an undercover mission. They had only been dating for about 2 months. When he returned, after all the time they hadn't been together, he was shocked to see her waiting for him. He thought she had abandoned him, realizing that she couldn't live with his job, but he was wrong. He ran to her, picking her up and spinning her around a little, her laughter echoing through the room.
After answering his text, Y/n lay down on the couch, watching a movie while waiting for her boyfriend to come home. She didn't even notice when, halfway through the movie, her eyes started to get heavy, and she gave in to sleep.
She woke up again when she heard the lock on the front door click, almost as if someone was trying to get in. Too lazy to get up, thinking it was Jay trying to get in, Y/n tried to call him to remind him he had a key, in case he was already a little tipsy.
At the end of the second ring, the cop answered, but something made Y/n freeze in place, glancing at the door in alarm. She could hear the noise coming from the other people at the bar, meaning he wasn't the one at the door.
"Baby, you there? Is everything okay?" Jay's voice brought her back to reality.
"Jay, aren't you the one trying to get in by any chance?" her voice shook, still standing in the same spot on the edge of the sofa, now raised.
"What? Guys, shut up, I can't hear Y/n. Baby, I told you I'm at the bar with the rest of the group." his voice immediately became serious. "Why? What's happening?"
"Jay, I think someone is trying to get in." Y/n muttered, holding the phone tighter to stop it from falling due to the shaking of her hands. Her wide, frightened eyes were fixed on the door.
As soon as those words left her mouth, Y/n heard a noise on the other side — Jay was shouting something to Severide. Then, there was silence until the sound of Jay's jeep engine was heard.
"Y/n, I need you to listen to me very carefully. You go to our room and lock the door. Then you go to the bathroom and stay in the bathtub until I come and get you. No one else, just me. Do you think you can do that?"
From Jay's voice, Y/n noticed that he went into police mode, speaking calmly but with authority. In fact, this was just so he wouldn't lose control and be able to help his girlfriend, despite the fear that was spreading throughout his body.
"I need verbal responses, baby. Do you understand?"
"I understand." her voice shook.
"Good girl. Everything's going to be okay." Jay tried to comfort her, breaking all the traffic rules and having the sirens on to get home faster.
His heart was tightening in his chest, almost stopping him from breathing. He blamed himself, he knew he should have stayed at home with Y/n, and now she was in danger, and he couldn't protect her.
Behind him, Severide followed him in his vehicle on a 911 call.
"I'm scared, Jay." Y/n's scared voice caught the police officer's attention.
"I know, baby, I know. But I need you to be brave until I arrive. I won't let anything happen to you. I just need you to hold on and then we'll finally go to bed and cuddle. Does that sound good?"
"Yeah." She felt tears coming to her eyes but tried not to let them fall. Just like Jay said, she had to be brave until he came to save her.
Y/n then started to go to her room until she stopped halfway up the stairs when the front door handle stopped turning. For a moment, she thought she was exaggerating and it was just someone who made a mistake in the house. But the panic returned when the automatic rear light came on, indicating that someone had passed by.
Jay only heard the gasp she let out. "What? What's happening?! You need to talk to me, Y/N."
"I think they're trying to get in through the back. I don't know if I locked that door!" She stopped her speech suddenly. "Oh god, I just remembered I left Missy sleeping in the kitchen."
"Y/n, do not go in there just because of the fucking cat!"
Jay didn't even like the little furball who seemed to hate him from the moment Y/n started dating him. However, he knew that his girlfriend would never forgive herself if something happened to the cat.
"Don't scream at me! I would be such a bad owner if I didn't come back to get my cat."
"I don't care about the damn cat when you're in danger!" Jay argued, but he knew Y/n was already heading downstairs to get Missy.
When Y/n arrived, she quickly found the animal on the dining table, looking super calm, an emotion quite contrary to what Y/n was feeling. Picking her up and quickly kissing her head, the girl thought about what her next step in the plan would be: go back up the stairs or find another place to hide.
However, the intruders finally opened the door, and the choice became obvious. Y/n quickly ducked and hid behind the kitchen counter so she wouldn't be seen. On all fours and with Missy under her arm, she grabbed a knife and tried, as silently as possible, to head towards the pantry.
"Y/n, don't go silent on me. Tell me what's going on. I'm three minutes away."
"They're here, Jay. I'm in the pantry with a knife." Her breaths were ragged and shuddering. She had to put her hand over her mouth to stop herself from crying. "I was so stupid. Why didn't I do what you said? I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. God, don't apologize, sweetheart." Jay muttered with a heavy heart, running his hand over his face in despair, never having felt greater helplessness.
"They're getting closer." Y/n whispered, closing her eyes and holding her hand in front of her mouth so you wouldn't hear her heavy breathing. Jay slammed his hands on the steering wheel, clenching his jaw and thinking about what he could say to his girlfriend. "I love you, Jay. So much."
"Don't say that like it's goodbye, Y/n. I can't take it." He shook his head, using all his strength not to break down and burst into tears. "I'm almost there. One minute."
But Y/n was no longer able to respond. That's because a man, dressed all in black, entered the kitchen and looked around. She was peeking through the pantry bars, hoping he wouldn't be able to hear her and that Missy kept quiet.
She just had to hold on for one minute. Jay would be there on time. Either way, she held the knife in front of her, ready to attack. But deep down, she knew she had no chance against the muscular man. Very easily he would be able to throw her down and take the knife from her. But she wouldn't go down without a fight.
She knew that if it came to that, she would have to try to scratch him to get his DNA under her nails. That way Jay and his team would have a better chance of catching this man.
The man got closer and closer to the pantry. Y/n's hands were shaking uncontrollably. She just wanted to close her eyes and discover that it was all a nightmare. But as much as she wanted to, this was reality and the fact that she could die that day became more and more real and scary.
She didn't want to die without kissing Jay one last time. Without calling her parents to tell them she loved them. Without telling her best friend she should take the first step and text the boy she liked. She wanted to be a mother. She wanted to marry Jay and experience an eternity with him.
But just as she was ready to run out with the knife pointed at him as soon as he opened the pantry door, the man was pulled aside. She heard a moan of pain followed by things falling to the floor. Y/n wanted to go out and see what was happening, but Jay's words echoed in her head: stay hidden until he came to get her.
And then came immense relief. She heard sirens. Before she could process everything that was happening, the pantry door opened. Y/n, in a moment of panic, got up and tried to attack, the person easily dodging and putting his hands up in defense. It was only then that she realized that the person in front of her was Jay, and the intruder was on the ground, bruised, and being arrested by another police officer.
Missy, with all the commotion, quickly ran up the stairs, probably hiding in the guest room until things calmed down. In turn, Y/n dropped the knife on the floor, her face contorting and her lips trembling. She began to cry, finally releasing all the panic and fear she felt. She was pulled into Jay's arms and into his chest.
With his arms around her, feeling his warmth and the movements of his chest, Y/n finally felt safe. Jay kissed her head, saying words of comfort in hopes that she would calm down.
"Jay…" she cried, grabbing his shirt with a very tight grip.
"I'm here, baby. I'm not going anywhere. It's okay. You're safe. Shh…"
Jay then just pushed her away slightly, holding her face with both of his hands. "Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm okay. I was so scared."
"I know, baby. But you were so brave, I'm so proud of you. And I'll never let this happen again, I promise." he gave her a small kiss on the lips, pulling her back to him. She would never disappear from his sight again.
"Hey, sweetheart." Gabby's voice broke the moment between her and Jay. Y/n she turned her head to look at the woman she adored so much, only now realizing that Severide and Brett were watching the scene from afar. However, she continued to grab Jay's shirt, ensuring he stayed close to her. "Do you mind if we go to the ambulance just to make sure everything is okay?"
A moment of hesitation. Brett, realizing the problem, stepped forward and with a gentle smile said, "Jay can come too."
So, Y/n nodded in permission, following the paramedics to the ambulance. Outside, there were two more police cars and neighbors were in front of their houses in their pajamas to see what was going on. Always under Jay's arm, Y/n waited for Dawson and Brett to do their assessment, ensuring that everything was really okay.
After ensuring that there was no need to go to the hospital, despite a lot of resistance on Jay's part, Y/n won the argument with the condition that the next day, Will would stop by to check on her. But at that moment, Y/n just wanted to sleep with Jay next to her.
Once in bed, the man had one arm over her protectively, making sure there was no space between them. "I will protect you until the end of my life. I love you."
"I love you too." she looked at him with just love in her eyes. Finding a more comfortable position, Y/n closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
But Jay stayed up all night. The most important thing is that Y/n recovers after that traumatizing night. And if she had any nightmares, he would be there to protect her.

Your hospital shift was nothing short of exhausting.
That day there were three hospitalizations in the ICU due to a terrible accident that happened in the afternoon. Three patients, all of them brain dead. The ward was short-staffed and it was just you and another nurse, Amanda, on that shift so dealing with these three new patients, along with the other ones, was really exhausting.
After closing your locker, you removed the necklace where you hung the ring and slipped it onto the ring finger of your left hand, which you did at the end of each shift. You didn't want to risk losing it during work, you’d never forgive yourself for it so you just carried it around your neck during the shifts. You looked at it for a moment with a smile on your lips thinking back to the day Jay asked you to marry him.
You took your cell phone from the pocket of your uniform and, as you walked towards the exit, bag on your shoulders, you noticed various texts from Jay, the last one dating back to a couple of minutes prior.
From Fiancée 💍, 7:17 pm
Baby we're still dealing with a difficult case, I think I'll be late tonight. Please let me know when you get home. I love you endlessly. Be careful.
From Fiancée 💍, 7:55 pm
Baby? Are you okay?
From Fiancée 💍, 8.21 pm
Should I send a patrol to the hospital? You know I'll do it love.
You chuckled not doubting about that, you knew he would. Jay had always been very protective of you, which you wouldn't admit but loved it madly. You loved he cared about you, so much he’d leave everything and everyone to come to you if you asked him to.
From you, 8.27 pm
I'm sorry love, it's been a hard shift and I just picked up my cell phone. I'm going home now. How are you? When will you finish? You’ll come home soon, right?
You left the hospital and started walking home. It was late spring and the temperatures were finally starting to warm up a bit, allowing you to finally breathe fresh air. You really needed it after a whole day of smelling the hospital and disinfectants.
Your cell phone started ringing following a call.
“Hi baby! You really miss me that much, don’t you?” You begin, bringing your cell phone to your ear, a smile on your lips.
“I always miss you, you know that,” your fiancée answered on the other end of the phone. “Are you walking home?”.
“Yes, it's a beautiful evening and I felt like walking.”
Jay sighed. “Baby you know I don't like the idea of you walking alone in the dark, you could’ve taken a taxi or waited for me to pick you up.”
“Oh come on Jay, what’s gonna happen. I'll be home in twenty minutes,” you retorted “Where are you?”.
“I'm still in the district baby, I have to finish writing a case report and then I'm finally leaving,” you heard some noise in the background but you couldn't figure out what he was doing.
Jay continued to keep you company on the phone, refusing to leave you completely alone even though you'd insisted that he finish work so he'd get back to you soon.
You asked him about his day and he started telling you what he had done as you listened to him carefully, asking him a few questions from time to time when you didn't quite understand something. You bumped into a person and quickly mumbled an apology before walking on, quickly glancing at the man who reassured you not to worry.
“Everything okay baby?” Jay asked.
“Yeah, yeah, I got distracted and bumped into a guy, no big deal. What were you saying?”.
Suddenly an unease feeling went through your body. You tried to let it go, thinking it was just a figment of your imagination.
You clasped your hand around your purse, quickly picking up your pace when you began to hear footsteps behind you.
They were so loud you seemed to hear them only a few feet away from you.
You turned around and stopped in your tracks, looking around for a few seconds before letting out a sigh of relief.
There was no one walking behind you.
Your heart was pounding and anxiety was eating up your stomach and you forgot for a moment you were on the phone with Jay.
Stay calm, you're just tired.
“Baby? You still there?” Jay's voice brought you back to reality. “Oh yeah, sorry, I couldn’t hear you anymore.” You answered. You didn't want to make him worry about your simple and stupid feeling, you knew if you told him you had the impression someone was following you he would’ve rushed to you and acted like the world was about to end.
You were sure it was just the fatigue speaking, but your senses remained alert until you got to your apartment. You took a shower while you waited for Jay to come back home, ordering food since you knew neither of you would feel like cooking.
You were about to lower the blinds in your bedroom window when, glancing outside, you noticed a figure standing on the sidewalk in front of you.
It was too dark for you to make out who it was and for a few moments you stood paralyzed, your eyes fixed on that dark figure, trying to figure out if it was just a hallucination.
The noise of the front door opening and closing made you jump in place, nearly giving you a heart attack.
You took your eyes off that figure for just a second.
Just for a moment.
And it was no longer there.
You ran your hands over your face in frustration, letting out a deep sigh at the same time before walking over to Jay, deciding you were going to ignore it and just needed a good night's sleep.
-
The following days went on quietly and the strange episode that happened a few nights before passed into oblivion. But that was before something else weird made your skin crawl.
“Are you sure you don't want me to drive you to work babe?” Jay asked you as he planted numerous kisses on your lips, making you smile between them. It was morning and you were both in the doorway, your arms around his chest as you both struggled to pull away.
“I'm positive baby, just think about resting okay? I’ll see you tonight.”
He cupped his hands over your face, giving you one last long, sweet kiss on your lips. “I'll have dinner ready for you. You be careful. I love you so much.”
“I love you more.“
The day went on peacefully. You had to work a double shift in the hospital as the nurse on the afternoon shift was sick and had to take over her place.
You loved your job, you really did. There was nothing else you would’ve done in your life but sometimes you couldn't deny how difficult and tiring it was.
“Y/N, sweetie!” You heard the voice of your colleague, Becca, calling you from a patient’s room you'd just passed. You sighed, recognizing the tone she used when she needed something.
You took a few steps back, looking into the room and noticing Becca intent on changing the unconscious patient's dressing.
“Becca I was about to leave, why do you still want to torture me?” You whined and she rolled her eyes. “Please help me change these dressings. Pretty please, I can't wait to leave too.”
She put on the sweetest puppy face she was capable of and for the second time you sighed and rolled your eyes. You ended up disinfecting your hands, putting on a pair of gloves and helping her to change the patient’s dressings.
By the time you finished you were dead tired and couldn't wait to get back to Jay and sleep, you probably would’ve just run away if anyone else had asked you any other favor. For this reason, you practically flew out of the hospital after saying goodbye to your colleagues.
It was particularly cold that evening and you found yourself rubbing your hands on your arms in an attempt to get some warmth. Thank God you took the car that day.
You walked over to your car and grabbed the keys from your bag. Before unlocking it, you noticed an object resting on the windshield, held on it by the wiper. You furrowed your eyebrows when you realized it was a rose.
A black rose.
What the fuck?
There was no card attached to it, just the rose.
Your heartbeat began to accelerate and anxiety took over you. You tried to keep calm and not freak out since there was definitely an explanation why someone had to put a damn black rose on your car.
Maybe they were wrong, maybe it was for another person and they got mixed up with the cars.
Who the hell gives a black rose though?
Your eyes scanned the parking lot around you but you didn't notice anyone suspicious or anyone nearby watching you, before dropping the rose on the asphalt, trying not to think about it. There was definitely a mistake.
The car ride was strange.
You couldn't shake the feeling something was wrong. You kept looking in the rear view mirror to notice if there were any cars following you, you were probably just getting paranoid but you couldn't keep yourself calm.
When you parked in your usual spot once you got back home, that feeling of discomfort hadn't disappeared, on the contrary, it had increased.
The streetlights hadn't been turned on yet and it was dark enough outside so distinguishing objects or people was pretty hard.
After locking the car you were about to enter the apartment building when your gaze fell on the sidewalk in front of you.
You didn't know if it was just your imagination, but you swore there was someone standing, exactly in front of you and, despite the darkness, you were sure they were watching you.
You couldn't figure out who that person was, only that he was a man.
Your breath caught in your chest as you realized it was the same figure you'd spotted a few days earlier from your bedroom window.
The silence was almost deafening, making everything more frightening and suggestive.
Your muscles were paralyzed as your eyes seemed to be glued to that man.
Suddenly he moved and your heart almost stopped beating.
But when you saw him go away, that was the last thing you expected.
He did nothing, just walked away.
You tried to explain what was happening in your mind. Maybe it was just a coincidence, that man was there for another reason and you had nothing to do with it.
You let out a sigh you didn't realize you were holding and quickly entered the apartment building, rushing to your home where you found Jay on the couch watching a show.
That rose left you with a feeling of anxiety that you couldn't get rid of easily, also caused by that figure you saw standing in front of you. You didn't immediately tell Jay, you didn't want to worry him since you already knew how he’d react and he’d worry to death and go crazy about it.
You just wanted to be sure that something’s happening before alarming him.
But, knowing you like the back of his hand, he immediately sensed there was something strange, that something was bothering you. You tried to convince him otherwise, that you were just awfully tired after working a double shift at the hospital.
“Baby, really, I'm fine. I'm just dead tired,” you said for the hundredth time since you'd set foot inside the house.
“Are you sure? You know you can talk to me. Did someone upset you? Did something happen at work?” He kept going, thumb and forefinger under your chin to keep your head up and make you look into his eyes. Your hands slid under his shirt, caressing his chest as you placed your lips on his, trying to distract him.
“No baby, nobody did anything. Seriously, nothing happened,” you muttered against his lips, “I just missed my fiancé like hell.” You bit his bottom lip and he hissed, his breathing suddenly heavy. “Do you want to take a shower with me?”.
“Fuck yeah,” Jay had said before crashing his mouth on yours and kissing your breath away. His tongue explored every corner of your mouth as his lips moved masterfully with yours. His hands went down your body and he bent slightly before reaching your thighs, pressing his fingers against your skin and urging you to jump into his arms.
You wrapped your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck meanwhile he carried you to the bathroom, never letting go of you. As he kicked the door open, you found yourself completely lost in him, the rest of the world vanishing and all negative thoughts forgotten.
However this sensation of bliss was destined to vanish.
In the following days the feeling that was tormenting you didn’t disappear, instead it only got worse.
You started to sense someone was constantly following you and watching you, that every time you walked in the middle of the street there was someone behind you even if every time you turned around there was no one.
After finding that rose on your car, this kept happening and almost every night for two weeks a rose would appear on your windshield.
Jay knew something was wrong, you weren't acting normally anymore.
You were always jumpy, any sudden noise made you almost have a heart attack, even if you were cooking and he suddenly hugged you from behind you’d be scared to death.
Needless to say Jay asked you a million times what was going on, what was it that was bothering you so much but you didn't want to bother him. You didn't want to upset him, make him worry about some stupid feeling of yours, not when his work was already haunting him enough.
Maybe deep down you were hoping whoever was leaving you those roses would stop and eventually leave you alone.
One evening you went out with your friends, on one of your rare days off, to try to keep your mind occupied and to catch up with them since you didn't always have the opportunity because of your hectic job.
Between laughter, jokes, chatting and various cocktails, the evening went on normally and by 1:00 am each one of you went back home. You headed towards your car, parked not far from the bar where you had all met together, calm and happy for the first time in weeks.
However, this feeling of calmness faded the instant your gaze fell on a damn black rose sitting on your windshield, again.
A wave of anger took over you.
You were tired, so damn tired of this little game that whoever it was was playing against you.
Who the hell was this person? What the fuck did they want from you? Why were they targeting you?
Whoever that person was they following you, they knew what you were doing, who you were with, and it scared the shit out of you as well as infuriating you.
You tore all the petals off that rose that would haunt you forever before throwing it angrily on the asphalt and getting into the car. You started it and quickly drove away from there, intending to go home immediately.
You wanted Jay, you wanted your fiancée. You wanted to hug him, feeling safe again in his arms and forget about all that shit that was going on.
As soon as you got home, however, your heart skipped a beat when you saw Jay laying on the sofa, asleep. The TV was on and he had his cell phone resting on his stomach, holding it close in case you called him. A smile was born on your lips and for an instant all negative thoughts flew away as your attention focused on the sleeping figure on the couch.
You leaned towards him, leaving a sweet little kiss on his forehead, also gently stroking his hair with your left hand. He stirred in his sleep and opened his eyes at the same instant, looking around before looking at you, a sigh of relief to see you were back home safe and sound.
“I’m sorry I woke you up baby,” you whispered, kissing his forehead again “Let's go to bed so you can sleep again.”
He mumbled something you couldn’t catch and rubbed his eyes before flashing a smile that nearly made your knees buckle. He nodded and then stood up, stretching his arms before pulling you into a hug. “How are you my love? Did you have fun?”.
The memory of that rose returned to your mind but for some reason, seeing his eyes so red and tired, you decided not to worry him about it and you’d talk to him about it the following morning.
“Mmh,” you muttered nodding your head “I really had fun, we needed this girls night out even though I missed you a lot.”
He chuckled, placing his hands on your face and giving you a kiss on the lips. “I’m glad darling, you deserved it since you’re working so hard lately. And I missed you so much more,” he kissed you again “Come on, let's go to sleep now.”
But that night you couldn't sleep given the thousands of thoughts that were going through your head. You couldn't help but think who would do something like that, what the hell those roses meant. Was there anyone who had it in for you? Did you do something to someone? Maybe an angry patient?
You thought again and again about who could be doing this but none occurred to you. Jay told you about his cases so many times you knew that whoever did this was doing it to torture you, to keep you on your toes, to make you live in fear.
And the fact they were succeeding was infuriating you.
Fear turned into pure terror when, while checking your cell phone, you noticed a text from an unknown number.
So pretty. Can’t wait to meet you.
How did they get your number?
You were so immersed in your thoughts you didn't notice it was morning and that Jay had woken up in the meantime. He literally jumped out of bed when you told him the time after he asked you, realizing he was late. You had the afternoon shift so you didn't have to worry about getting ready for quite a while longer.
“Baby can I talk to you about something?” You had asked him, not being able to hold it in anymore even though you knew you picked up the worst time to do it.
How smart were you for wanting to talk to him about something so delicate as he was hurring to get dressed and going to work? Not much.
“Can you tell me about it later? I'm so sorry, but I'm super late…” he replied frantically as he ran from one part of the room to another looking for the keys. He stopped for a moment in front of you, placing his hands on your face, analyzing your features. “Is it something important though? If…”
You shook his head, placing your hands on his chest and giving him a reassuring smile even if anxiety was making you nauseous. “No, it's not urgent baby. I'll tell you tonight. Now go.”
He smiled at you and made sure to leave you a long, sweet kiss on your lips before saying goodbye and literally flying out of the front door.
It could wait, right?
You tried to keep yourself busy all morning, cleaning every corner of your apartment and keeping your mind from the negative thoughts.
You couldn't deny the slightest noise made you jump, even when you accidentally dropped something on the floor. You hated this feeling, you hated having to be afraid in your own home, you hated whoever was doing this to you, you hated them so fucking much.
You nearly jumped for joy when you realized it was time to get ready for work, the thought that for few hours you'd be safe made you especially happy to go to the hospital.
You took a shower before quickly putting on your uniform and packing your bag. You checked that everything you needed was there, house and car keys and hospital locker keys, a bottle of water, tissues, tampons, some snacks, pepper spray and a small knife. Jay had forced you to carry them around constantly, asserting you could never be too safe and he’d be comfortable with the thought you had something to protect you in case of need, and never as then as then you were grateful to him.
Once you left the apartment, you made sure you locked the door at least three times. The anxiety that had been living with you for weeks was now gripping your stomach, forcing you to constantly look around and keeping you alert to any individual passing by you.
You forcefully clutched your purse to you, walking briskly to your car and unlocking before climbing in and locking yourself inside. You let out a breath you didn't realize you were even holding as your eyes continued to scan the perimeter for any type of threat.
Did you already mention how much you hated this?
“It's okay Y/N, it's okay, just take it easy,” you whispered to yourself, taking a deep breath before putting on your seat belt and starting the car.
As you drove to the hospital you couldn't help but constantly look at the rear view mirror, almost as if you expected someone to be following you but they weren't, there was no car that you repeatedly noticed behind you.
Your cell phone started ringing and you took it from inside your bag, not taking your eyes off the road. Without even looking who it was, imagining for a moment it was Jay, you answered.
“Hello?”.
The smile on your lips instantly disappeared when instead of a voice you started to hear a heavy sigh, almost a pant.
“Hello?”.
You took the phone away from your ear and glanced at the screen, noting that it wasn't Jay, or anyone else you knew, but an unknown ID.
“Who is this?” You continued, hoping whoever it was would answer and maybe you'd recognize the voice. The person on the other end of the phone just kept sighing heavily, making your heart beat so hard you thought you were about to have a heart attack at any moment.
“What the fuck do you want from me?! Leave me alone!” You screamed, in the grip of fear, anxiety and anger that this person was forcing you to suffer. You closed the call and threw the cell phone on the passenger seat, not caring if it had bumped into something or was broken.
Your vision began to blur with tears fearing for your safety. They had your number. They knew where you lived. What kept them from taking you and killing you?
Your hands were shaking on the wheel as you parked at the hospital, palms sweaty. Your heart was still pounding and there wasn't a muscle in your body that didn't shake like your hands.
You took a few minutes to compose yourself, not wanting to cause questions from colleagues about the reason of your emotional state.
You took a few deep breaths and wiped your tears away, constantly telling yourself that everything was fine, that you'd be fine, that no one could hurt you in the hospital.
You never felt the need to have Jay with you like then. God you were stupid, so fucking stupid for not telling him about all of this before, for keeping everything inside you and hoping it’d eventually just go away, for underestimating what was happening. You were being stalked.
You texted him, telling him you'd arrived at the hospital and asking how his day was going, determined to tell him about the person who was stalking you as soon as you got off work.
You never thought you'd say it but you were never as glad you had a hard shift as you were that afternoon. Four patients arrived, one after suffering a stroke, two from a car accident and another after falling from the roof of his house.
The entire shift consisted of you and your colleagues running back and forth across the ward, treating patients, resuscitating them after one of them went into cardiac arrest twice. Your mind was focused on nothing but your patients and in treating them, everything else was left out of the hospital. You wouldn't let whoever was stalking you ruin your job, ever.
At the end of the shift there was no need to say you were dead tired and couldn't wait to go to sleep and although it was only 8:00 pm, the lack of sleep of the night before starting to take a toll on you.
As you placed your stethoscope in the locker and grabbed your bag, you removed your engagement ring from the chain around your neck and putted it on your finger. Your cell phone rang following a text notification and your heart skipped a beat for an instant.
The anxiety, which you managed to not to think about during the afternoon, returned stronger than ever to grip your stomach and for a moment you considered to throw the phone away.
But you thought it’d Jay and when you realized that it was indeed him, you breathed a sigh of relief. He said he'd be late that night because of a particularly difficult case and to let him know when you'd be done and went back home.
You tried to hide your sorrow, not wanting to be alone, especially in that situation.
You quickly typed a text back, asking him what he’d like for dinner, and put your cell phone in your bag. You said goodbye to your colleagues and walked towards the hospital exit.
You took a deep breath, praying to God to go home safe and sound.
Although spring had arrived it was particularly cold that evening due to the wind blowing and you cursed yourself for not bringing a jacket with you.
You walked, actually, almost ran to your car.
Anxiety was eating you alive and your heart was pounding, fear flowing like a river through your veins.
After taking the keys from your bag and unlocked the car, you quickly looked around, a sigh of relief leaving your lips when you saw no one was around you.
But suddenly the keys fell out of your hands as a slimy hand placed over your mouth and an arm around your hips.
Your bag fell to the ground as you began to squirm in an attempt to free yourself from whoever grabbed you.
Adrenaline coursed through your veins as the fear of dying made you fight like never before.
You screamed, your throat burning, even though because of the hand your scream came out muffled.
“Stop fighting it, it had to happen sooner or later, you knew it was going to happen sweetie,” A man's voice came hoarsely to your ears and you suppressed a gag.
You managed to hit his side with your elbow, hard enough to loosen his grip on you and you tried to push him away with all the strength you had in your body.
“You fucking whore!”.
You threw yourself to get the car keys on the asphalt but the man was faster than you and grabbed your arm, pressing his fingers into your skin with such force you were sure they’d leave a mark.
A searing, stinging pain radiated up your face as his fist hit you full-on, knocking you to the ground. You put your hands forward to try to cushion the fall, but it caused you scratches and minor lacerations on both your forearms.
“We're meant to be. I know you want it. I saw it.”
You glanced at him and almost fainted when after few seconds your recognized him.
You had already met him. He was the guy you bumped into two weeks ago.
What the fuck?!
He tried to grab your wrists but before forcing you to get up, you managed to kick him in his genital area, using all the strength you had in your body. A sound of pure pain escaped his mouth and he backed away, leaning forward and gripping the sore area with his hands.
You took advantage of that moment of weakness to get off the asphalt. You weren't going to let him hurt you, not anymore.
You grabbed his black hair in two fists and you didn't care about the damage you would’ve caused him, you didn't care you were a nurse, that you were supposed to be the one to treat people and not hurt them, but you kneed him in his face and the horrible noise his bones made, suggested you most likely broke his nose.
You pushed him to the ground, ignoring the way he grunted in pain and the blood pouring profusely from his nose, kicking him in the stomach with such force that even you were stunned.
You never fought in your entire life, never kicked anyone or punched someone, you hated the idea of hurting people but at that very moment your life was on the line and you had to protect yourself.
The man was laying on the asphalt grunting and muttering some curse word and you took advantage of it. You had to run away, that was your only chance.
You quickly grabbed your car keys and purse off the ground before opening the door and getting in. You locked yourself in before you started fumbling to get the vehicle going.
Your hands were shaking and your vision was still blurry from the punch he had thrown at you.
You gave him a quick look, terrified he’d get up and kill you on the spot.
You didn't know how but you managed to start the car and without even looking back you drove away from that parking lot. You knew you couldn't drive in those conditions but you just wanted to get away from that monster.
You didn't know where to go, you didn't want to go home, the terror of being attacked there would’ve killed you so you went to the place where there was the only person you wanted to see, the only one who could make you feel better, safe.
The journey to the district was awful.
Your body was driving but it was as if you were experiencing everything from the outside, as if your soul had left your body and was looking at you from afar.
You didn't know how you managed to drive and not run over anyone or crash yourself.
Your breathing was still quickening, your chest rose and fell as if you'd run a marathon, your trembling hands struggling to hold onto the steering wheel. Your vision was blurred due to copious tears flowing from your eyes and streaming down your face, not even realizing you were crying desperately.
Your face was in pain and you were sure a huge bruise would appear on your cheek, although you didn't care, grateful you were still alive, that you managed to escape.
When you arrived at the district, you didn’t care about parking your car properly, or to take your bag or lock it after getting off. You just wanted Jay.
A smile appeared on Sergeant Platt's face the moment she saw you walking up the stairs, but when she noticed the way you were running, it immediately disappeared.
“Oh my God Y/N!” she exclaimed as soon as she saw you up close. Your face was streaked with tears, an expression of pure terror and fear contouring your features, your uniform stained with dust. She ran towards you, placing her hands on your arms. “What happened to you?” She took a look at your body looking for any other injury. “Oh dear. It's okay, whatever happened you're safe here.”
You kept breathing hard and your eyes were so full of tears you could barely see her.
“Shh it's okay. Come on, let's go sit down.”
She put her arm around your shoulders as she took your hand with her free one as a sign of support. She led you into one of the break rooms, making you sit on the couch and sitting next to you.
Her hand kept squeezing yours meanwhile the other stroked your back, trying to calm you down.
“Do you want some water?” She asked and you nodded, not being able to speak at the moment. Trudy got up and ran to get a bottle of water.
She handed it to you after opening the cap and it broke her heart to see the way you were shaking. “T-thanks,” you stammered, your chest shaking with sobs. “J-Jay.”
“I'm going to call him right away, don't move from here,” she said, seeing the way you needed him. She got up and ran upstairs, where Intelligence was still busy working on the case.
Everyone turned to the sergeant, who was at the top of the stairs with an expression that did not bode well. “Trudy, did something happen?” Voight asked as soon as he saw her but her gaze fell on Jay, who was standing by the whiteboard, arms folded across his chest.
“Jay… It's Y/N…” She spoke, saying nothing else. “She's downstairs now…”
Jay's eyes widened at the sergeant's words, his eyebrows furrowed in an expression of worry and fear. He knew something was up, by the way Platt looked at him and a wave of anxiety hit him, his mind now focused only on you.
Without even letting her finish the sentence, he quickly moved away from the others, running down the stairs, almost tripping on his feet. Trudy followed him, giving no explanation to the rest of the team who just exchanged a worried look.
“Where's she?” he asked hurriedly and Trudy pointed him to the room you were in.
He burst into the room and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw you sitting on the sofa but immediately worrying when he saw the state you were in. Trudy closed the door behind him, leaving you two alone and not giving any other cops a chance to snoop.
You had your elbows resting on your knees, your hands on your face as your leg bounced up and down almost obsessively.
“Baby!”.
His voice made you snap your head to him and before you knew it, you were rushing into his arms, squeezing yours around his torso with so much force you were almost afraid he’d disappear.
Jay was surprised for a moment but immediately returned that hug, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and hugging you like he never did. He had no idea what had happened, but whatever it was he knew it was serious and that was enough to make his heart race.
“I'm here baby, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. It's okay,” he whispered, placing a kiss on your head, stroking your hair. You cried in his arms, with relief because he was finally there with you.
His heart sank as he heard you cry like that, feeling helpless like never before. You kept shaking and, without even knowing anything, Jay promised himself whoever had done this to you was a dead person.
“Baby you're making me worry to death. Please talk to me,” his voice coming out desperately. You broke away from his embrace, but still remained very close to him. “Darling, look at me. What happened?”.
His hands rested on your face and inevitably on the bruised cheek. You winched in pain and this didn't escape Jay, who was on the verge of losing his mind by then. “Y/N. Look at me,” he urged and you did as he said, lifting your head and making eye contact with him.
His breath caught in his chest as his gaze fell on the clear purple bruise on your cheek.
“What the fuck? Y/N…” he stammered, an incredulous and horrified look on his face as he looked at you. He took his hand away from your wounded cheek, placing two fingers under your chin and turning your head to inspect it better. “Shit baby… What happened? Who did this to you?”.
His heart was pounding in his chest and as his eyes looked at every single inch of that bruise that lined your cheek, every single cell in his body lit up with rage. Seeing the desperation on your face, the look of pure terror with which you were looking at him, the way your eyes were so full of tears, Jay felt as if he had stabbed and someone had twisted the knife over and over again.
“I-I… H-he…” you stammered meaninglessly, sobbing between words clearly still unable to speak.
“Oh baby come here,” he hugged you again, this time even harder than he had before. “My beautiful princess. It's okay, it's okay, you're safe now do you hear me? You're safe.” He tried to comfort you “I'm here now, I'm here. You’re not alone anymore and I will never let anyone hurt you again. You’re safe with me my love.”
“I-I was…” another sob “So… S-so scared…” you cried into his shirt, wetting it with your tears.
“I know, my baby, I know,” he whispered, placing lots of little kisses on your head. “I'm so sorry. It wasn't supposed to happen, not to you. But you're safe now, I'm here with you, you’re safe with me.” He kept repeating to you.
You both sat on the couch and he continued to hug you indefinitely, holding you and cradling you in his arms until you calmed down. “Sorry,” you muttered, your voice weak as you pulled away from his embrace, gesturing at his tear-stained t-shirt.
“Don’t even say it,” he replied. He raised his hand and stroked your hair, tucking it behind your ears as you kept your gaze on your hands. He was about to continue speaking when his eyes fell on the bruises on your arm, visible outside of your uniform.
His fingers lifted the sleeve to take a better look of the bruises on your skin. He immediately understood they were finger markers, a sign that someone had violently grabbed your arm.
“Oh darling,” he whispered, shattered at the sight of those horrible marks on your beautiful skin “What have they done to you?” His fingers caressed you gently, being careful not to hurt you further.
He was furious, like he had been a few other times in his life, and he still hadn't heard the story.
“Tell me what happened, please.”
You sighed and with still trembling voice, started talking. You told him about everything, about the roses, about the feeling of being followed, about the text, about the call and about the man who attacked you, the fact you already saw him for few seconds weeks prior, how he hit you and how you defended yourself.
“Why the hell didn't you tell me about it sooner?!” Jay snapped, when you finished speaking “This was never going to happen dammit! I would’ve killed that fucking son of a bitch.”
He leapt to his feet, running his hands over his face and pacing around the room. He didn't want to pick on you, it wasn't your fault and he knew it, but he was so damn angry, so angry you had to go through this, that he wasn't there to protect you.
His eyes landed on you noticing how yours quickly filled with tears again at his words and the tone of voice he used. “No, no, no baby, don't cry,” he rushed over to you, kneeling in front of you and wiping away the tears with his thumbs. “I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to blame you. It's not your fault, please don't cry.”
His hands rested on your knees as you looked at him with sad, broken eyes, making his heart break over and over again. “You’re right I should have told you about it…”
“No, baby, don't get this into your head okay? It's not your fault, I’m so sorry for snapping like that I’m just so fucking furious for what that piece of shit did to you. It’s his fault, he hurt you and make you go through all of this. I hate you had to go through this alone and I wasn’t there to help you,” He sighed “I knew something wasn't right, I should have…” Jay stopped his eyes suddenly widening as you looked at him confused.
“Oh my god, that's… That's what you wanted to tell me this morning, isn't it?”. You didn't answer, effectively giving him the answer he needed.
Jay scrambled to his feet again, as if he'd just been given an electric shock. “Fuck!” He tried to keep control but you jumped as he kicked a chair in anger before placing his hands on the table and bowing his head, his back towards you.
“Jay…” you mumbled, standing up and walking towards him. You placed a hand on his back even though he didn't move from that position.
“It's my fault, this…” he choked on his own words “If I had stopped and listened to you this morning… Shit… It shouldn't have happened… I’m so sorry…”
“Hey, hey, no baby,” you interrupted him “Don't be hypocritical and tell me to not blame me and then do the same.”
He turned his head to you and it broke your heart to see his eyes full of tears. “I was late Y/N… I… This happened to you because I didn't stop for five fucking minutes to listen to you!”.
“Jay, listen to me,” you spoke to him softly. You lightly pulled his arm, causing him to straighten his back. You cupped your hands over his face, stroking his cheeks. “It's that crazy bastard's fault okay? Not yours, not mine.”
“If something happened to you… God…”
“No. Let's not do this. No ifs and buts. I'm here and I'm fine, I was scared shitless, I'm still scared shitless, but I'll be fine. You’re here with me and you’re all I need baby. These are just bruises and they'll be gone in a couple days,” you croaked “You should’ve seen how he looked then.”
He sighed before letting out a chuckle though the tears, hugging you for the third time, his hand stroking your hair. “We'll get him okay? And I'll fucking make him pay for what he did to you.”
You and Jay went upstairs, not wanting to let you disappear from his sight for even a second, after reassuring Trudy and telling her what had happened. Needless to say, she threatened to kill the bastard herself if Jay didn't. The way he answered told you that there was no need and that he’d certainly sort it out.
“I'll get you some ice for the bruise,” Kim had offered. The rest of the team didn't take it quite well either and Voight promised you they’d catch the bastard who hurt you. You and Jay had been together for a long time and you were part of the group now, an attack on one of them was an attack on all of them.
“Thank you,” you thanked her with a warm smile, placing the bag of ice on your face. The cold sent a rush of shivers up your spine.
“Come on baby, let's go in the break room,” Jay had said, his hand resting on your lower back. However, your gaze fell on the white board on which various photos and sentences were hung.
At first you didn't notice, but when your eyes saw a particular photo, you did a double take, stopping in your tracks and lowering the hand that was holding the ice.
“Baby? Are you okay?” Jay immediately asked alarmed, then following the direction of your gaze. “Oh. That's the case we're investigating.”
The photo just on the blackboard wasn't clear enough, it was a frame taken from a surveillance video but you could distinguish the features of the man it portrayed.
You stopped breathing for a second and your mind retraced in those brief moments your aggression, still fresh and imprinted in your memory.
“Y/N?” Jay pressed, worried about your reaction as his hand caressed your back.
“It-it… Jay…” you breathed out “It's him…”
“What?!” Jay's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets and everyone in the unit couldn't mask their surprise.
“It was him… H-he attacked me… Oh god…”
Your hands start shaking again and you thanked that Jay was there to hold you or you would’ve probably collapsed on the floor.
Your eyes moved from that frame to the other hanging photos. There were four photos depicting four different women, more or less your age and similar in appearance to yours. Alongside these were other photos portraying instead what were unmistakably the victims’ bodies.
You were in complete shock.
What were the odds that the man stalking you was the same Jay was investigating on?
“C’mon let’s go,” Jay put his arm around your shoulders, leading you to the break room and closing the door behind him.
You weren't even crying. You were just completely shocked.
“Jay… He…” you stammered as if you were having trouble coordinating your thoughts. He put both of his hands on your shoulders.
“Baby, just breathe okay? Do it with me, take a deep breath.”
You shook yourself out of his grip, now in a panic. How could you calm down?
“He was… He would’ve killed me Jay, like… Like those women… Holy shit…” you continued to babble. You couldn't believe it. You understood that bastard was to be locked up somewhere, but you never, ever imagined he was a serial killer, that he’d done that before to those poor women. What if you didn't fight? What if he managed to overpower you?
Jay closed his hands into a fist, pressing his nails into his palms in an attempt to let out even a tiny bit of the anger, rage and fear he was feeling at the moment.
He didn't even want to imagine it, the thought was enough to make him sick. He didn't want to imagine what could happen to you. He run the risk of losing you forever without even realizing it.
Jay couldn't exist in a world where you weren't there. He couldn't even pass the idea of not having you next to him, the pain from this thought alone was unbearable and it was enough to make his heart shatter to pieces. Damn it, he asked you to marry him, you were his fiancée, his soon to be wife, the future mother of his children. You had to start a family together, buy a bigger house to raise your children and you’d live and grow old together, forever.
He couldn't accept some son of a bitch threatened to take you away from him, the most beautiful person he'd ever met, the love of his life, his anchor and his salvation.
“What happened to those women?” You asked, afraid to hear the answer.
“Baby…”
“No Jay, please, just… Just tell me. What happened to them?”.
Jay took a deep breath, knowing that telling you would only make you feel worse. “No, love. Listen to me now,” he walked over to you, placing a hand on your healthy cheek and stroking your skin with his thumb. “Don't torture yourself like this, it won't do you any good to know, please trust me. You were so brave and you managed to knock out that son of a bitch and now you're here with me, safe, so just think about this okay? I beg you. I don't even want to think about what happened to those poor women, I don't want to think something like that could’ve happened to you and I don't want you to think about it either.”
He was right. You didn't want to know, sometimes it was better to live in the unknown.
“I'm so proud of you,” he whispered, kissing your forehead as his fingers wiped away your tears with excruciating delicacy. “I would’ve died if anything had happened to you baby, I love you so, so fucking much. I couldn't have survived without you.”
“I love you so much Jay,” you too replied in a whisper before sharing a soft, sweet kiss, your nerves starting to finally calm down. “What happens now?”.
“You’ll stay here and we’ll continue to work non-stop until we catch that bastard.”
“Are you sure I can stay here?”.
“Is this even a question?” He looked at you as if you were an alien “Yes baby, of course you can. You have stay here. I need to know you're safe or I won't be able to think of anything else and I know nothing can happen to you if you’re here. If you need anything call me and I’ll be here okay? Try to get some rest, and put ice on your cheek.”
You nodded, knowing that even you wouldn't feel safe anywhere else but there in the district.
After sitting on the small sofa in the break room you eventually fell asleep, tired and worn out from the shift, the day's events and the lack of sleep from the previous night.
Jay and the rest of the team worked nonstop to try and locate the suspect whose name was still unknown. After learning you had hit his nose and you had probably broken it, they called the hospitals in the area and within a radius of about 20km – deducing he wouldn’t be so stupid to go to the hospital where you worked – with the hope that he’d go to get treated.
This hope turned out to be a reality when Kevin was told by a hospital just outside the city that there was a patient matching the description who was still there waiting to be treated for his broken nose.
When Jay went into the break room to warn you they'd found a lead, his heart skipping a beat seeing you asleep. Your head was resting on the back of the couch, your arms folded across your abdomen as your chest slowly rose and fell.
A sad smile spread across his face as he approached you with silent steps, his chest tightening at the sight of that horrible bruise on your cheek. As his eyes roamed on your body, he then noticed some scratches on your forearms and his stomach dropped again for the thousand time that night. He’d never forgive himself for not being able to help you, for failing to realize sooner what was happening, allowing someone to hurt you, he was hating himself for not being there to protect you.
He decided not to wake you up and he leaned over you, gently stroking your hair and tucking a strand behind your ear that had fallen in front of your face. He kissed your forehead, taking an extra second to savor the moment, grateful to still being able to do it.
“I love you so much my baby,” he whispered, “Everything will be okay, I promise you.”
After telling Trudy to stay by your side and never leave you alone, he headed towards the hospital where the suspect was supposed to be, his blood boiling with anger, his hands shaking with the frenzy of being able to have that son in his hands.
The stalker, however, after seeing the cops coming, didn't hesitate for a second to run away. Jay chased after him, determined not to let him get away.
“Chicago PD! Stop now!” Jay shouted as he quickly descended the emergency stairs and followed the man, skipping a few steps at a time in an attempt to reach him first. The fact the man was injured went to his advantage as Jay took the opportunity to jump on his back, causing both of them to fall heavily to the ground.
Jay's vision immediately blurred with anger.
He punched him in the face, using all the strength he had in his body to hurt him. “Son of a bitch!” He exclaimed through clenched teeth, punching him again and again. He didn't care about anything, he didn't care about the consequences there could be. He just wanted to see him suffer, to see him writhe in pain and fear, just the way you did.
“You made a fucking mistake tonight,” Jay spat, standing up and grabbing him by the collar of his shirt, lifting him up like a sack of potatoes before slamming him heavily against the wall. The man coughed, letting out sounds of pain even if Jay couldn't care less. “You'll wish you’d never met her when I'm done with you, you worthless piece of shit.”
He hit him in the face with another punch, not caring about the blood splattered on him after each blow.
He didn't even realize he wasn't alone anymore. Voight was there and watched the scene without batting an eyelid. He deserved it, he deserved everything Jay would do to him, not just for you but also for those poor women who weren’t lucky enough to survive. He knew there was no way to stop him, even if he wanted to, especially since you were involved.
Jay hit the man's head against the wall, then pushing him to the ground. He approached him and without any mercy and without even acknowledging the man's suffering, he kicked him in the stomach.
“Fuck…” the man murmured weakly.
“Look at me you son of a bitch!” Jay cursed, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt again and punching him in the face. “You thought it was fucking fun to hurt my fiancée?!”.
Another strong punch.
“Answer me!” He shouted, knowing he’d not receive a response.
Jay had completely lost control.
His mind was only picturing your wounded and tear-stained face, your terrified expression, your eyes full of tears, the bruises on your arm, on your face, the scratches, the way you hugged him so tightly because of the terror you felt, the fear you must have felt in those weeks.
“You thought you’d get away with it huh?! Making my future wife's life a fucking hell?!” He growled again, kicking this time the man’s face. “Making her scared of her own fucking shadow?!”.
Another kick in the stomach.
He was about to kill him and he didn’t give a fuck.
He bent over the man who was then barely breathing. “Did you like putting your useless dirty hands on my girl, huh?” he hissed as his foot stepped on one of the man’s hand with so much force until he heard his screams and his bones cracking.
He didn't move anymore, now unconscious and covered in his own blood.
Voight intervened at that point, not even knowing if he was alive or not. “That's okay Jay, calm down now.” He placed his hands on his shoulders, pulling him away from the unconscious man. Jay was breathing heavily, as if he had just run a marathon, his angry eyes still focused on the bastard lying on the ground.
“Now get away from here. Go out from the emergency exit and drive back to your fiancée, you were always there with her okay? I’m sure she needs you now.” Voight had ordered him but Jay didn't respond at first. “Halstead.”
At that point Jay focused his gaze on his boss and nodded feebly, casting one last glance at the stalker before walking away.
He wiped his face and hands with a handkerchief he had found in the car, trying to ignore the pain in his swelled hand, his knuckles red.
He never regretted what he did.
He had always condemned the brutal ways some cops used, like his own boss did sometimes, but in that moment he didn't stop to think about how he’d not hesitate even a second to do it again and make suffer anyone who’d hurt you.
When it came to you he’d lose his mind, his judgment clouded. You were the most important person in his life, the most precious of treasures, and he’d protect you with his own life if he could, if it meant keep you safe forever. It may have seemed an exaggeration, it may have seemed crazy, but he didn't care, God, he would’ve burn the entire city to the ground if it meant protecting you.
And as he drove to the district, eager to see you again, only one thought ran through his mind: how much he regretted not making that piece of shit suffer more.

it had started out slow, the missed dates and last minute call-ins that you never really paid a mind to. chalking it up to that he just seemed to have busy weeks, and jobs always came first -- that was something you had agreed on in the beginning, and you had been okay with that.
then, it turned into going out with your shared friends without you, and if you managed to tag along, he had ditched you completely half-way through the night. you didn’t want to be controlling, that only made things worse and never made anyone happier. so, you told yourself that it was just something to do with his job. making excuse, after excuse for him.
but then, you noticed how his gaze always lingered on her. how it seemed she had become the center of his universe, and that if asked, he’d rearrange the stars just for her. he use to look at you like that, but now, it seemed that it was meant for someone else -- someone else had happened to spend more time with.
that’s when you had stopped trying. but, that’s when he started noticing a change.
it was almost humorous in the way he’d ask if things were alright -- thinking it had been about your job or a lost friendship. never once thinking about the relationship between the two of you as the soft gaze he use to give you now present in his eyes once more.but you had long stopped falling for those eyes, and had only brushed him off.
the weeks of asking the same question had grown tiring, and just as predicted, the dam had broken. “why don’t you just tell me what’s wrong so i can fix it!” jay had yelled, fists clenched at his side after you had once again brushed him off. his anger getting the best of him, and causing him to snap as the rest of your friend group looked on in shock.
“you can’t fix it, because you’re in love with hailey!”you scream back, all of the hurt you had been keeping bottled in had finally broken, and the anguish had fallen over you like a tidal wave. tears slid down the slopes of your cheeks, “i don’t know when you started to love her more than me, but it’s obvious to everyone that you’ve stopped caring. and maybe, you are trying to convince yourself that you aren’t -- because it doesn’t really make sense, but you need to stop lying to yourself, and me.”
“i’m tired of coming in second place, and i’m tired of being picked over unless it’s convenient for you. so, i’m just going to save us all the trouble, and the feelings and just rip of the bandaid. because as much as i love you, i can’t keep trying to make things work when its apparent you don’t want them to.”
a spared glance to your once shared friend group had confirmed everything -- to include the shameful look hailey had written across her features before her gaze had dropped to the sidewalk in front of her. you sighed, flipping your keys around in your hand before turning on your heel and walking towards your car.
“we don’t get to talk about this?” jay called after you, crossing into the street just as you had before coming to a stop at the front end of your car, fully prepared to stop you from leaving.
“no, and there is no ‘we’ anymore. i’m done, jay. don’t force yourself to be happy when you clearly aren’t.” it’s the last thing you say to him before pulling the car door open, surprised to watch his arm fall limply to his side -- no force to keep you there.
he steps away as the car engine turns over, eyes watering as you pull out of your parking spot and down the street. eyes brimmed with tears as he rejoins his group of friends, gaze focused on the dirt covering the toe of his boots -- all to avoid the pained and angered glanced that bare down on him. however, a hand slips into his own, and he recognizes the feel. it’s hailey.
for some reason, he should feel guilt, but he doesn’t. he’s just upset that he broke your heart in this way.

Flight
Tumblr media
Kim Burgess x fem. Reader
Summary: Kim asks you to help with a case and you make a big announcement.
Warnings: none
Word count: 1045
Gif not mine*
F/L/n - former last name
————
“Come on N/n, please we need you for this case. You’re our last hope.” Your Wife begged, and you sighed your frustration through the phone. “Tell me what you need me to do again.”
————
You had met your wife through a commercial flight that you had done together, her as an Air Hostess and you as the co-pilot, who was also an ex-Air corps pilot. You both hit it off at the bar with one too many drinks and ended up sharing a hotel room since you had both gotten so drunk that you ended up in the same room. And that’s how your relationship began, a couple years after that, you both got married and Kim told you that she wanted a career change. When she told you that she wanted to be a cop, you flipped to say the least. But no matter her choice you accepted it, she was your wife and if she was happy then so were you.
Her career as a cop and your’s as a pilot we’re not easy to work around, but you always made sure to take the same furlough off so you could spend at least a bit of time together.
You hated leaving Kim in Chicago by herself, you also hated leaving without her and not being back in Chicago for a week. And you couldn’t lie that it did put a bit of a strain on your relationship, but you two always came back for each other and that was what counted.
So whenever Kim asked you for a favour, you knew you couldn’t turn it down even if you wanted to and even if it was illegal. The pilot who was supposed to fly them out to New York had a family emergency. “What am I flying then?” You asked just so you would know and what controls it worked on. “It’ll be a Hawker 400XP, you good with that? Or we could always grab one off your friends airline company.” You hummed, while you had never flew one of them you had flew something like it, “no it’ll be okay, when do I need to be there by and where are we flying from and to?” “9 O’clock tonight at Chicago P.D’s Air Field to New York, I’ll have more details for you when we get there.” You nodded and yawned, “best get an early sleep then since I have to be up in two hours, I’ll be on the ground at 8:30pm meet me there, I want to spend a little time with my wife.”
————
You were at the air field at 8:30 like you had said you would be with your small hand luggage, Kim arrived a little after you and she gave you a peak of the lips. You smiled at her, “last hope then?” Quoting their conversation “get off your high horse Y/n,” she laughed, slapping the back of your head lightly.
You both started walking towards the private jet that would be being used to draw in the criminals that would be doing the meet with the team to give information on a gang fight as long as he was out of state. “You think your ready to take this on?” You gave Kim a look that said, ‘really?’ And she smiled lightly, “yes I’m ready to take this on and meet your co-workers or whatever. Are you ready?” She grinned at you, pushing her soft lips on yours and into an intoxicating kiss. “More than ready, love.”
You smiled back at her as you both continued to walked to the plane.
————
Whenever you got into the planes cabin, you saw Kim’s co-workers waiting with the suspect, “This is my contact, Y/n.” Kim introduced you, and you smiled, except your eyes met another man’s and you could recognise him anywhere. “Halstead?” You furrowed your eyebrows at the man, “F/L/n? Surprised you remember me from Afghanistan. How’s civilian life treating you?”
You nodded, “The normal, ya know. Would guess it would be about the same for you.” He nodded, and the air became awkward. “F/n, Kim filled me in on the details.” You started, purposely not introducing yourself with your last name. “Sergeant Hank Voight, this is my team. Halstead and Burgess you know apparently. This is Upton, Atwater and Ruzek.” They shook your hand and you smiled back at them. “Pleasure to meet you all. If you don’t mind, can I get started, just want to run the standard checks for fuel and tire’s.” “Voight nodded, if there’s anything you need just talk to Burgess, she’ll get you sorted.” You smiled, “I don’t doubt it.”
————
When it came time to start making your way towards the runway, you started your general talk that you would on a commercial flight, “good evening people, my name is Y/n Burgess and I will be your captain for tonight.” You were smirking through the introduction and you knew you could hear some commotion in the cabin. “I’ll guess you know all the rules of flying but if you don’t… just read the card in front of you it has all the information you need. Now let’s get this party started.”
————
As you made your way off the plane, Kim was waiting for you as was the rest of the team. “Burgess really?” You smiled at Jay, “yeah, we’re married” you said, showing your ring to them. Kim showing the one that she kept on a chain round her neck. Adam gaped at Kim, “how long was this a secret for?” Kim shrugged, “like 7 years.” She looked at you for conformation and you nodded. “And to think I tried to get with you..” Adam muttered under his breath, no one paying any attention to him.
Soon enough, you were heading home with Kim’s hand in yours her fingers intertwined with yours. She kissed you quickly as you got to the car and let you sit in the passenger seat, so you both could drive home and head to your soft bed for some much needed together time.

30 hours J. H.
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jay Halstead x female!reader
Warnings: mention of injuries and violence, swearing, slight mention of blood, kidnapping, possible bad writing and mistakes
Wordcount: 4,076
A/N: please be kind, this is the first oneshot I wrote in a year or two and I am still super unhappy with this, but keep working on it would just make it worse I think. And my friends said I should just post it, so … Also, English is not my first language, please keep that in mind while reading. I hope you’ll like it anyway
Now without further ado… I present to you:
30 hours
Tumblr media
You rub your face sleepily as you slowly wake up.
As you feel the weight of an arm around your waist, you can't help but smile.
You turn to Jay, whose arm is pressing you against him.
What started as a friendship has become so much more. And yesterday he finally asked you to marry him.
Gently you trace the contours of his face with your finger. Memories of last night come flooding back and you bite your lower lip as you think of Jay treating you to a little corner cafe before you took a walk along the Chicago River and him finally getting down on one knee in front of you.
Your eyes fall on the beautiful silver ring with the little stone set in it, on your finger.
"Morning," you say as you see Jay waking up.
"Morning," he replies in a raspy voice, giving you a smile that takes your breath away. "Sleep well?"
You nod before reaching a little further towards him and placing your lips on his.
God, you still can't believe that this wonderful man is now your fiancé.
Happily, you smile into the kiss and slightly part your lips for him. You feel his tongue gently nudging against yours and you feel yourself catapulted right back to last night. What his tongue had done to you...
You can't hold back a soft moan at the memory and you feel his knowing smile in your kiss.
As it becomes more intimate, Jay rolls over you and....
Your kiss is abruptly interrupted when a cell phone rings somewhere in the room.
Last night, on the way from the door to the bedroom, you had spread your clothes anywhere in the flat. His trousers had apparently made it into the bedroom.
"Don't answer it," you plead, wrapping your arms around his neck, knowing it's Jay's phone because Intelligence most likely has a new lead in the current case and he needs to get to the precinct. "Let's just stay in bed for a week," you suggest, with little hope of agreement, though.
Jay leans down a little towards you and kisses you intimately again for a few seconds before pulling away and going in search of his jeans. "As tempting as that sounds, I'm afraid I can't do that."
You sit up with a sigh as he gets out of bed and fishes the phone out of his pocket.
As expected, there's a new lead that needs to be followed up.
So you get up to make breakfast to go for him as he heads into the bathroom for a quick shower.
Wearing only one of Jay's t-shirts, you are standing at the kitchen counter pouring coffee into a to-go mug when you feel your fiancé standing behind you.
His hands are on your hips as he plants a kiss on your cheek.
"My angel," he murmurs and you turn your head so that your lips meet. "Have I ever told you how much I love you?"
"Once or twice..." you reply with a smirk.
"So not often enough."
You press the sandwich and the to-go mug of coffee into his hand and push him towards the door.
"I love you, too. And now you have to go. Work needs to be done."
It's Saturday, so you don't have to work and can devote yourself to other things, like grocery shopping or housekeeping.
Jay steals one last kiss before disappearing out the door with a "love you".
Heavens, even though you've known each other for five years and been a couple for three, you're still as much in love with this man as you were at the beginning of your relationship.
At first it was hard for you to come to terms with the fact that Jay often has to work late and sometimes he has to leave just because of work. But by now you've come to terms with it and Jay always makes it up to you in one way or another. Either with a romantic date, or little presents he gives you, and of course with the love he gives you every single day.
Lost in thought, you finally make your way to the supermarket. But soon you wish you had just stayed in bed with Jay.
"Y/N?", you hear an unknown voice behind you and turn around in confusion.
You don't know the man standing in front of you. But he seemed to know your name. He held out a wallet to you. "You just lost this," he says.
Unsure, you take it from him and look inside. Indeed, it contains your driver's license, your bank card, cash... and yet it is not your wallet. You've never seen this thing before in your life.
What the fuck?
You are about to reply that it is not your wallet when everything happens really fast. A black van pulls up next to you and the man who handed you the wallet before now pushes you backwards so that you lose your balance. Someone behind you catches you and you are finally thrown into the van. Your head hits the wall and an unpleasant hammering makes its way to the back of your head.
Doors slam and two seconds later the van speeds on.
It takes you a few seconds to realize what has just happened.
You have just been kidnapped.
That afternoon, Jay comes home in excitement at the sight of his fiancée in his arms again.
The current case, which has kept them on the go for a fortnight and got Jay out of bed this morning, has now been solved and he just wants to be with you, eat something and sleep.
But when he enters the flat, you are not there.
He checks all the rooms in the flat, but you are not to be found.
Are you with friends and forgot to tell him? Normally you always let him know if you're meeting someone, because you know that otherwise his detective brain will spin banal theories about what might have happened to you.
With a frown, he pulls out his mobile phone and tries to call you. But he is sent straight to voicemail. After the third attempt, he gives up and calls your best friend instead, deeply hoping that you are with her, or at least that she knows where you are.
But with her, too, nothing.
Now Jay is really worried.
Worried, he calls Ruzek, who is a good friend of yours and through whom you and Jay met in the first place, hoping that he is still in the bullpen for paperwork.
Jay was lucky.
"Hey man, what is it?" asked Adam exuberantly.
"Can you ping Y/N's phone? She's not there, I can't reach her, and I don't have a good feeling about this."
"Just a minute," Adam replies, recognising the concern and urgency in Jay's voice.
Shortly afterwards, Adam gives an address of where your cell phone was the last time before it was turned off.
With a quick thank you and a promise to let him know when he has found you, the two colleagues and friends on the phone say goodbye and Jay gets back into his truck to drive to the address.
It wasn't far and as he got out his heart stopped for a moment.
A wallet with your drivers licence is lying on the small footpath of the side street and a few metres away is your phone, the screen shattered. There are black tyre marks on the road from a sharp braking.
Jay pulls out his phone again and calls Adam for a second time.
"Found her?" he asks hopefully, but Jay doesn't even let him speak. "Y/N's been kidnapped."
Jay knows his colleague has just sat up straighter.
"Jay, are you sure?"
"Yes." Jay describes what he sees in front of him and then asks Adam to call the team together.
Less than fifteen minutes later they were all standing on the scene.
"Okay, you know what to do, check PODs, residents' CCTV and ask residents if they saw anything. Jay's girlfriend, one of ours, has been kidnapped. And we're going to get that asshole!" the sergeant ordered his team before putting a comforting hand on Jay's shoulder and saying, "We're going to find Y/N and she's going to get through this. She's tough. You'll see your girlfriend again."
"Fiancée, to be exact," Jay replies, but Voight hadn't heard him anymore.
Back in the bullpen, with all the evidence and statements from the residents, they create a board with all the facts so far. Photos of the skid marks, the wallet and the mobile phone. In the middle hangs a photo of the victim. He has seen this board so many times before, with disturbing and nightmare-inducing images. But now it is different.
Worse. Creepier. Because this time there's a photo of you hanging there.
Jay is standing in front of it, looking at it.
The photo doesn't do you justice, he thinks. The sparkle in your eyes is not there and the smile on your lips is nowhere near as beautiful as he knows it. Everything seems so dull and lifeless ...
An elderly lady watched the abduction from her kitchen window, but thought nothing more of it. However, she was already somewhat demented. Therefore, her statement is less reliable, but her description, apart from a few exceptions, matches those of the other residents of the street.
According to her, a man spoke to you, then a black van appeared, then flew away and you were gone.
Jay ran an agitated hand through his hair. He had to concentrate now. Intelligence had already solved a case with less clues, so they could solve this one too.
At the stroke of midnight, his phone buzzes, showing that he has received a video message.
He plays it while the others look over his shoulder.
There you sit tied to a chair with your cheek visibly reddened and a small gash on your cheekbone.
"Jay. The three wankers in front of me ..." you get kicked in the shin as you insult your captors as wankers and you curse a soft "ouch" before continuing. "Anyway, they want you to turn yourself in, Jay. A trade. I get released and they take you in exchange. In 30 hours, you'll ... what? I can't read the scribbling ...” your look shifts to one of your captors. “If you're going to make me read rubbish like that, at least write it neatly enough so I can read it dramatically ..." you grumble, and Adam has to suppress a snort. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious.
One of the kidnappers gave the address you couldn't read before. "Right there... That's where you'll be standing in thirty hours, unarmed. They will release me and take you with them. Should you not do it, they will kill me."
Your eyes shift from what you are supposed to be reading out and you look at one of your captors. "Oh, go bury yourselves, or throw yourselves in front of a train, I don't mind ..." You wrinkle your nose slightly at the last sentence.
Then one of the kidnappers speaks again, "Detective, follow our instructions or your little friend will die. Know that this is revenge for the death of my brother."
While the kidnapper is still speaking, you shout, "Jay, don't do it! Don't make the trade!"
You catch a slap, your head flies from the punch to the side, and then the video ends.
It's only when he exhales now that Jay realises he's been holding his breath. As did the rest of the team.
Adam made the comment that you're pretty brave to be so defiant to the kidnappers. Or you're tired of living. It's going to be one of those two.
Over the next few hours, Intelligence investigates whose brother it might be, who was capable of such a thing, and where those, as you called them, wankers, might be holding you.
But when nothing new comes of it, Voight sends everyone home for the time being to get some sleep and to be able to continue working in new freshness. After all, they still have 27 hours.
But Jay doesn't want to go home. He could never sleep there now.
In your bed, knowing that you're sitting somewhere kidnapped, tied to a chair....
Which is why Adam finally offers to take him with him, so that he can at least get a little sleep on the couch there.
20 hours until the exchange:
By now they've figured out who wants to see your fiancé suffer.
A few weeks ago Jay had shot someone, Paul Lancaster to be precise, on a case after he in turn had opened fire on him.
Jay had escaped with a bruise at the time due to the vest, but Paul had died on the way to hospital. He had hit well.
Now Paul's brother, Jeremy Lancaster, seemed to want revenge on him and this man had quite an interesting sheet. Jeremy had been charged several times for smaller felonies and had served two years in Stateville for aggravated assault. But even though Intelligence now knows who's holding you, they still have no clue where Jeremy and his two accomplices might be holding you.
Frustrated, Jay now throws a stack of papers against the wall and rubs his face in dissolution.
He's on the verge of giving up, of just turning himself in. He'd rather die than let them hurt you more than they already do.
They went through everything again, repeated all the residents' statements, looked at all the traffic camera recordings, but they got nowhere. The van had disappeared at some point at a corner without video surveillance.
"Play the video again," Jay finally asks Kim, who is currently at her computer trying to draw any clues from it as to where you might be.
"Jay ..." she started, but he interrupted her and took it upon himself to play the video from the beginning.
At the end, when you wrinkle your nose, he pauses the video.
"There! Y/N always wrinkles her nose when she bluffs while playing. I always tease her about it ... because she looks so cute at that moment and it annoys her when I say that, ... that was a hint ... She was giving us a hint."
Kim rewinds a few seconds and plays it again.
Burying themselves ... jumping in front of a train ...
They play the video again and again.
"Train ... bury ... buried train ... underground!", Jay finally combines and writes it immediately on the case board.
Seventeen hours until the exchange:
If they didn't find you soon, Jay knew, he'd turn himself in. No matter what you had said, no matter what Voight will say. He can't let you get hurt.
There are seventeen hours left to find you, and Jay can barely think straight when they find out Jeremy is in an on-off relationship with an Angelina Perry. Maybe she can help.
God, Jay hoped so much.
Adam and Kim bring the girlfriend to the station and Jay watches the questioning through the mirror, his partner, Hailey standing beside him, watching him with concern. She knows how much Jay loves you. Every time Ruzek brings up one of the stories from your childhood and your name comes up, his eyes light up and a smile spreads across his face. But now there was nothing but worry and fear.
"What am I doing here? I don't know any Y/N," Angelina clarifies.
"But you know Jeremy Lancaster. Don't you?" asks Kim, unimpressed.
"Y-yes? Why? Did something happen to him?"
"No ...", Adam picks up, but Jay is no longer listening, because he has just received another video message.
Alarmed, he looks at Hailey, who nods once and finally gets Adam and Kim out of the interrogation room. Meanwhile, Jay gets Voight out of his office and has Kevin run the video from his phone onto the computer.
With held breath, the team watches the video.
You are still sitting in the chair with your head hanging, probably unconscious. Your hair hides the view at your face, but kindly Jeremy grabs your hair ungently and pulls it back so that he lifts your head and the team can see you properly. Your face is swollen and you have a laceration on your forehead, a bruise is starting to form on your left eye.
"Fuck!" curses Jay, even before Jeremy has begun to speak.
"Hello Detective. A real fighter you got yourself into, I'm looking forward to making you feel what I did to her before I shoot you in front of her like you shot my brother. Or would you prefer I shoot her in front of you?"
Jay's blood boils in his veins. He is so angry at this monster of a man called Jeremy Lancaster for laying a hand on you, an absolute innocent.
With his phone in hand, he storms into the interrogation room where Jeremy's girlfriend or ex-girlfriend or whatever is sitting.
With a slam, the door shuts behind Jay. Angelina flinches in fright and looks at the frustrated and distraught detective in front of her.
The rest of the team have followed him and are now watching through the one-sided mirror.
"You better tell me now where your boyfriend likes to hide. Because if he kills her, I'll hold you responsible too!" he threatens, knowing very well that he couldn't do that. But he just wants to have you back, to hold you in his arms again and hear from you that everything will be all right again.
With these words, he slams the mobile phone down on the table and lets the video play.
Angelina looks shocked and tears glisten in her eyes as she watches the video.
"That ... that's Jeremy? Wh-why?"
"His brother Paul messed up and got himself killed. Jeremy blames me and has been holding my fiancée for over 13 hours now. God knows what he's doing to her. And every minute that goes by, he could hurt her. So if you don't want to be responsible for murder, you'd better think really hard about where your boyfriend could be hiding with her!" he rages and Angelina flinches again, however Jay can see that she is starting to think.
The team, watching the whole thing through the mirrored glass, are quite flummoxed. Did Jay just say you were his fiancée?
They all caught your complicated love story, how Jay initially thought you and Adam were a couple and ended up with Erin. How you buried your crush on Jay deep inside when you found out. How you then held him when Erin left, dumped him, and how you both had to get your asses kicked by Kevin and Kim first before you confessed your love to each other.
They know how much Jay loves you and how much you love him. And they have taken you to their hearts as well. As Voight had said, you are one of them, even if you don't work for them. You are their friend. It takes all the more out of them now to know that Jay is not only about to lose his fiancée, but that they could lose their friend.
"Did he ever say anything about an underground or anything?" His voice was no longer loud and threatening now, but quiet and desperate.
One could see it in Angelina's face as she thought of something before she said, "The old underground warehouse...he...he told me once that when he was a kid he used to play in the factory hall with his brother. Maybe that's where they are ... he is ... was ... really close with his brother." With that said, she looks hopefully at the detective in front of her. He nods and finally leaves the interrogation room.
The team leaves the room at the same time as Jay, from where they have been watching everything.
They would all like to say something to him, but they all know that nothing they could say would make anything better.
Sixteen hours until the exchange:
The team storms the building from all three entrances.
Jay and Hailey, Kevin and Kim, and Adam and Voight.
Flash grenades are thrown, "Chicago PD! Drop your weapon! ... Hands in the air! ... on your knees!" are shouted from all sides and Jeremy and his two accomplices had to admit defeat.
Jay's gaze wanders searchingly down the hall and ....
There you lie. On the floor, hands and feet still tied to the fucking chair, not moving. From his position he cannot see if you are still breathing. Your hair covers your face, but you seem unconscious. At least Jay hopes you are only unconscious and nothing more.
God, he hopes so badly that you're still alive.
While the rest of the team arrest Jeremy and his accomplices, Jay gets down on his knees next to you, unties you and frees you from the goddamn chair. You don't move and anxiously he feels your pulse.
It is there, but very weak. But he can't feel relief yet, because as he brushes your hair out of your face, his examining gaze sees not only your wrists, chafed and blue from the ropes, but also your face. A nasty wound is emblazoned on your forehead. One half of your face is covered in blood, the other is red, swollen and a black eye is already forming. What had they done to you?
"Fuck ...", he curses softly and searches frantically for something to press carefully onto the wound.
By now Adam is standing next to him. In his face the same concern as in Jay's when he sees your bruised body and your hair, which is sticky with your blood but still shines moistly. "5021-Ida, shots fired by the offender and the police, offender in custody, one female victim down, multiple trauma to the head and body, roll an ambo to my current location asap," he quickly relays through his radio to the dispatcher.
You hadn't lost much blood yet, but head injuries were always treacherous.
Jay keeps mumbling that you should hang on. That an ambulance is on its way and that you should just hold on a little longer.
Seconds that feel like hours pass.
You hear Jay's voice as if from far away, begging you not to leave him, to open your eyes, to stay with him. You want to follow his plea so much that it seems to tear you apart, but your body no longer obeys you. Several times you try to speak, to say that you hear him, that you are there after all and that you are not planning to go anywhere else. But nothing. Not a single sound comes from your lips. You can't even move your fingers to show that you are still alive, that you can hear him....
Instead, you fight the complete blackness that threatens to overwhelm you. You cling to the love you feel for Jay where you know he returns it. You cling to his voice that seems to fade.
They always say that when you die, a warm white light appears to you, awaiting and welcoming you.
But it is the other way around. The light that holds you begins to shrink and is taken over further and further by the darkness, the blackness, the nothingness. Jay's voice is further and further away. You can barely hear him, barely understand what he is saying. And yet you know that he still commands you to hang on and tells you how much he loves you and can't lose you, that he needs you.
Then suddenly you hear female voices reciting foreign words. "V-fib" is the last thing you hear before there's nothing left. Just the empty, lonely, cold, blackness and you. You wonder if this is what death feels like.
At least you could die knowing what true love feels like. What it feels like to love someone more than yourself and to be loved just as much.
You had the chance to meet Jay and those few years with him were the best of your life.
Jay ...
Your last thought belongs to him, to him alone, and that yesterday morning you didn't say the last "I love you" back.
And then there was nothing. No light, no thought, no blackness. Just nothing.

Jay Halstead (& Platonic! Will Halstead): People You Love
Some stories just write themselves and that is what this one did. I’ve been in a writing mood lately and I have a whole list of ideas I want to go through. This isn’t super Jay x reader-focused.
Warnings: Mentions of PTSD and anti Will/ Natalie content
You took a sip of your drink listening to Will talk to his brother about his latest disagreement with Natalie. You had learned at the beginning of your relationship with Jay and first meeting Will that it was not a topic of conversation that you should chime in on.
Will wanted to be with Nat and there was nothing that could change that to his and her own detriment. You stirred the brightly colored liquid with your straw, listening to the ice cubes click against the glass. It was a sweet drink that Gabby had made for you. You were one of the few who frequented Molly’s that didn’t drink beer and only ordered mixed drinks. You had gotten hell for it from a few of the blue-collar boys, but Gabby had taken that as a challenge. There was always a new drink she had found for you to try.
You tried to hide your wince by taking a drink when Will went through some particularly low blows of the fight. The saying sticks and stones make break my bone never considered how cutting words could be. Especially from the people who were supposed to love you. “You want another babe?” Your eyes flashed between his eyes and your cup which you now found almost empty. You hesitate, but with the way Will is going, you will probably be here for quite a while yet.
“Yeah, just one more,” You agree. You watch him leave the table and make his way over to the crowded bar top. He wouldn’t have to wait if not for your drink, but he never complained. You heard a sigh and the loud click of a bottle being set more forcefully on the table.
“Alright, let's hear it.” You glance up at Will expectantly. You weren’t close but you had acquaintanceship because of Jay. You liked Will but it was hard to form a real friendship with someone when you felt like you had to edit everything you said because they couldn’t handle your honesty. Will had a strong alpha male confidence and ego. He needed someone who could call him to the carpet, but you weren’t willing to risk your relationship with Jay to be that for him. You tilted your head in question to his statement. “I know you want to say something, so let’s hear it.” You shake your head circling your straw in your cup again. The bangles that lined your arms clinked together loudly as they slid down to your wrists. “C’mon,” Will pressed.
“It’s nothing you want to hear.”
“But there is something you want to say.” His gaze held yours and he raised his eyebrows in question. There was a challenging spark in his eyes. He was looking for a fight. “You’ve been with my brother for almost a year and never had an opinion you wanted to share about any of my relationship problems? I doubt that. I’ve been trying and nothing has been working out. So, I’m up for a female viewpoint.”
“What you want is a fight. I like my relationship with Jay, I’m not going to ruin it by fighting with his older brother.” Will sits up a little straighter in his seat.
“Is that so? Well, this one can be on the house. No backlash or fallout. The way I see it-I asked, you answered.” You eye him up and down trying to determine the truth of his words and if he was able to abide by what he just offered. You looked at the bar. Jay was leaning leisurely against the bar top talking to Kelly Severide, Matt Casey, and Gabby. You could tell he was still going to be a minute. You look back at Will and nod.
“You and Natalie are never going to work.” Will blows out a breath and leans back in his seat before scoffing and shaking his head.
“You don’t-” You shake your head at him holding up your hand making all the bangles clank down to the bottom of your forearm, the loud noise effectively covering up his rebuttal.
“Uh-uh, you asked my opinion and now you're going to listen to it.” Will mouth turns into a firm line but he stays silent. “You two are bad for each other. I know you want it to work, to figure it out, for the little rainbows and butterflies to flutter down to fix all your problems. But it’s not going to happen. You two are bad for each other. She is bringing out the worst in you and from what I can tell- from the very limited time I’ve spent with you together- you are doing the same for her.”
“I love her,” You shake your head at the redheaded man in front of you.
“What you're doing to each other isn’t love Will. I know you care about her. Want what’s best for her but that doesn’t make it you. Love is finding each other's soft spots, their weakness. It’s learning and knowing exactly what could destroy them. It’s having all that power and choosing to protect them instead of bringing them to their knees.” You play with a bangle on your wrist twisting it, “I’ve been in a relationship where we picked each other to pieces, and I promise you Will that isn’t what you want.” You feel your eyes mist over with emotion, “It’s hard letting go but when you find someone that goes out of their way to protect you...When you would do anything to protect them...You will know that you’ve made the right decision.”
“I protect Natalie.” You shake your head at Will getting frustrated with his purposeful ignoring of the issues. “We just get heated sometimes, say things we don’t-”
“That’s what I am saying, Will. It seems to happen every other week with you too. Over stupid things that don’t matter.”
“Unlike you and Jay. Because I’m sure you too never fight.” Will shoots back and your frustration rises.
“Jay has PTSD. I’m more worried about protecting his mental health than notching up our day-to-day bickering. He gets in this headspace sometimes and it is irritating and frustrating because I just want him to talk to me. For him to let me help him. But he won’t. I didn’t understand at first. How could I? Then he had a really bad bout of it after a case. He didn’t hear me come in and I startled him. He pulled his gun on me. Pointed it right at my head.”
Will felt his own frustration turn into something churning in his stomach. He knew his brother struggled with PTSD from time to time. He knew that he had nightmares and that there were times when he was constantly on edge- hypervigilant. But Will had never been there to see the full extent of it. “When he realized it was me, I could see it all in his eyes. He was afraid that he could hurt me. That I would be afraid to be around him. If he had any idea how terrified I was, not that he would hurt me but that he would torture himself with it. Nobody can hurt Jay like Jay can. The fallout was awful. He struggled to get past it. I knew that it could never happen again.”
“So, what did you do?”
You looked at your arm and wiggled it. The bangles clank loudly together. “I made it so I can never sneak up on him again. When I went through my Bollywood phase and bought bangles my mom used to complain that the entire neighborhood could hear me when I walked around. I’m sure one highly trained soldier can hear it coming from a mile away.” You look over to meet your gaze with Will again. “Now when I see the signs, I wear them. That is what you do for the people you love.”
A look of understanding and respect is clear in Will’s eyes. You give him a smile and feel the threads of friendship beginning to form on the strong foundation of honesty and shared love of another person. “If you ever tell him that-” Will mimics zipping his lips before taking the last pull of his beer. You two sit in quiet understanding, and you can see Will marinating on your words. Whether they are thoughts about Jay or his relationship with Natalie you were unsure.
Jay returns a few minutes later, setting a vivid blue and green drink in front of you and two bottles of beer for the brothers. You eyed the drink thoughtfully, “Gabby said you had to try it. She called it sweet poison, I think.” You stir it before sipping through the straw. You could taste the rum. Gabby had a habit of being heavy-handed with your drinks. It was good though. You turned to look at Gabby and when she raised her eyebrows in question you gave her an enthusiastic nod. She fist-pumped her accomplishment before turning back to Matt. “That good?”
His strong hand found your thigh under the table, and you smiled at him. You caressed his forearm with one hand while pushing the drink closer to him with the other. “Yeah, try it.” He made a face at you but took a drink from the cup, not the straw. He merely shrugged his shoulders when you asked what he thought. “Yeah, yeah it’s always too sweet for you.” Jay looks over at his brother.
“You okay man?” He questions, Will was being too quiet.
“Yeah,” He runs his fingers through his curls, “I was just thinking... Might be a good time to get away for a while. Maybe do a week trip at Gramp's cabin. Fish and stock up on some more wood for the winter. You want to go?” The offer seems to throw Jay for a second. Between Will’s struggling relationship and Jay being busy with a heavy caseload they hadn’t had much time to spend together. Jay looks over at you and you smile brightly at him squeezing his arm.
“Yeah, I have some time saved up that I need to go through.”

“I can’t believe you talked me into coming out tonight,” Y/N groans as she sits across from her favorite Halstead brother. “Does Jay know you’re spending Valentine’s with his former flame?”
Being at Molly’s with her ex-boyfriend’s brother was not how she envisioned spending the night of Valentine’s Day. Being the only single one among her close-knit friend group meant that they were all out playing happy couples with their partners while she sat in a bar that looked like a cherub had thrown up all over the inside of it. Her original plan was to sit in her apartment, put on a horror movie and binge eat the snacks she bought yesterday.
But then her grandpa had been admitted to Chicago Med after having had a nasty fall and being his emergency contact, the hospital called her. Will just so happened to be his doctor and after getting her grandpa all fixed up and ready to go home, he’d asked if she wanted to get a drink with him later, on a completely platonic level, of course. She agreed saying it would be her way of thanking him for taking care of her grandpa.
“He doesn’t need to know,” Will says with a smirk. “We were friends before you dated him. I miss you.”
“I miss you too, William,” she smiles taking a sip of her beer.
“Don’t call me William,” he playfully glares at her.
She goes to say something when she sees another familiar face walk through the door to Molly’s, her smile fading instantly. Just as he notices her and starts making his way over, she turns her attention back to Will and glares at him. “I’m going to murder you.”
“But then Jay would have to arrest you,” he says unaffected by her empty threat.
“We’re never talking again after tonight,” she tells him.
“I’ll call you tomorrow to see how your night went,” he tells her as he stands up and pulls his coat back on.
“Where are you going?” she asks, her eyes widening in fear of being left alone with Jay. She hadn’t spoken to him since they ended their relationship 6 months ago.
“You two need to talk and sort things out,” Will says as Jay reaches their table. “Good luck,” he adds patting Jay on the shoulder as he leaves Molly’s.
“Did you set this up?” she asks Jay, turning on him. Not wanting to cause a scene in front of everyone in the bar, she grabs her coat and walks out of the bar, with Jay following quickly behind her.
“Y/N wait!” he calls to her as he catches up with her. “Will set this up to help me out, okay?”
“You two just completely ambushed me,” she stops turning on her heel to face him.
“I didn’t know he was planning this!” he admits. “I told him I was thinking about dating again but I couldn’t stop thinking about you and wanting to be with you again. He told me that I just needed to do it and that he knew someone he could set me up with. I didn’t know it was going to be you.”
“You thought you were meeting someone else,” she asks feeling her heart drop a little.
“I did, but I’m glad it’s you,” he tells her. “If I didn’t see you through the window, I wouldn’t have walked inside Molly’s. I couldn’t go through with the blind date.”
"Why?” she questions, her heart fluttering back into her chest.
“Because I still love you,” he admits aloud for the first time since their breakup. “You are not easy to get over.”
“I could say the same about you,” she says thinking of her failed dates because she always found herself comparing them to Jay. They never came close to making her feel the way he did. “So where do we go from here?”
“I was thinking we could go get something to eat, talk it out and see where it leads us,” he suggests.
“I want to try something first,” she tells him.
“Okay,” he says hesitantly unsure of what she could have in mind but relaxes when she steps closer to him and pulls him into a kiss.
Giving into their feelings they still have for each other, Jay brings her closer and Y/N’s arms wrap around his neck, her hands making their way into his hair.
“I still love you,” Jay says softly after breaking the kiss to catch their breath. “I never stopped.”
“I never stopped loving you too,” she smiles.
Jay kisses her once more before slinging his arm over her shoulder. Y/N leans into his side as they walk to his truck. He opens the passenger's side door for her. She goes to get into the seat when she sees a bouquet of her favorite flowers and a box of chocolates there.
“Oh Jay, flowers and chocolates?”
“Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking,” he tells her.
“I’m sure your blind date would have loved them,” she smiles.
“Does she like them?” he asks her, reminding her that she is his blind date.
“I love them,” she says picking them up off the seat. “Instead of going to get something to eat, would you want to head to my apartment, order a pizza,” she holds up the box of chocolates, “and maybe share these for dessert?”
“I would love too,” he agrees.
“Good,” she says standing on her tip toes and presses a kiss to his cheek before climbing into the passenger's seat.
Jay closes the door and walks around to the driver's side and gets in. Starting his vehicle, he begins the drive to Y/N’s apartment and takes her hand into his, kissing the back of it.

A/N: This is based off of the song, How do I do This? by Kelsea Ballerini. You don’t need to listen to the song to get this by any means but I recommend you do! It’s a song that’s been on my mind for a while and I just love Kelsea’s music as a whole! It got a little away from me so apologies for that! I’m also still working on requests and some more chapters of my Jay Halstead fic so please be patient with me.
Enjoy!

Are you free Saturday? I know a spot
Those two texts come in rapid succession as you finish cleaning the store up. You’d usually try to avoid checking your phone so often in front of your manager, but by this time you were usually the only one left.
What did you have in mind?
You erase the message in-between organizing the new book shipment.
Saturday? That’s a little too close for me.
You erase that message while balancing the books for that day.
By the time you lock up the store and head home, you had thought up a couple million ways to respond before erasing them. Putting your key in the lock and you finally respond with a simple Yes.
Your next thought was right before you slid into bed for the night. Where the hell is your dress?
Specifically, your little black one that showed off all of your curves. The one that was probably lonely from being unused for so many years.
Having split from your husband over a year ago and trying to start fresh back in Chicago, you were worrying yourself into a spiral. You hadn’t been on a date since you were 22 and you were feeling out of place, getting back into the dating scene at 29.
You and your ex had grown apart from the moment your marriage started. You had done everything you could to keep everything together. You—being the one who made more money—had bought a big house. One that had room for you two to grow a family and have a backyard for a dog. It felt right at the time, maybe it would be enough so the walls didn’t seem like they were closing in.
You and your ex had been fine. But that’s all you were…fine. You finally convinced him to do therapy with you and, unfortunately, the final straw for you was when you realized that he loved you more at 23, then at 27.
You had filed for divorce not long after that. He claimed he hadn’t seen it coming, and fought you for the house. You gave into it, wanting him to just sign the papers and be done with it. In the end, when you signed your lease back in your home city of Chicago you finally checked the box “divorced.”
It had been quite the change, getting used to being back in the city. You contacted one of your oldest friends, Kelly Severide, to hang out and catch up.
It was at one of those meet ups that you met Kelly’s girlfriend, Stella Kidd, and the two of you hit it off instantly.
Now a year later, Stella and Kelly were getting ready to get married, and you voiced your thoughts to them about dating again. Stella said that she had a friend who was your type.
You had no idea what that meant, but after a few failed attempts at signing up for one of those awful dating apps, you gave Stella permission for her to give her friend your number.
The day after the first two texts were sent, he texted you again saying: Great! I’ll pick you up at 7.
You remembered at 22 being a little more cautious about a man picking you up for a date, but you trusted Kelly and Stella so you tried trusting this guy too.
It was hard, everything you’ve ever known about dating, relationships, and love had been ruined with the breakdown of your marriage. Now you wished it wasn’t affecting your thoughts this long after.
So is it any wonder that it’s 6:52 on Saturday and you’re trying to reassure yourself by saying you got this during your last looks in the mirror.
“You’ll be fine,” Kelly was saying over the speakerphone as you contemplated taking a shot to calm your nerves, “Do you think we don’t have your best interest at heart?”
“Kelly,” you say plainly, “It’s been years since I’ve been on a date. I’m gonna look so stupid stumbling over myself and what if he brings up my marriage? You told him about that right? How do I fucking do this? Is it wrong if I take a shot of something?”
“Stella,” you hear Kelly call from his end, obviously feeling like he needed backup, “she’s freaking out.”
“Yes I am.” You almost growl in confirmation, “I blame you both for this. What was I thinking?”
“Relax, girl,” Stella’s voice says over the line in a reassuring tone, “I got you. Look, I’ve known Jay for a while okay, and I’m sure you’ll charm the socks off of him.”
“Oh god,” you say, slapping a hand to your forehead almost dramatically, “I know he’s too good to be true. What have you done, Stella.”
“Breathe, Y/N,” Kelly says, his voice clear and unyielding.
There was a knock on the door. You jump slightly, looking up at the clock on the stove. 7:00 on the dot.
You curse, telling Kelly and Stella that he was there. They told you to have fun and they’ll call you later for details before immediately hanging up on you.
Cursing your friends once more, you open the door, and your breath lapses. You were going to kill Stella for understating his looks by saying he was “good-looking”.
He was much more than good-looking. He was gorgeous. His dark hair was cut evenly. His eyes were a mix of blue and green and freckles littered across his features. He was dressed for a date, his outfit lining the structures of his body. You feel slightly better about choosing your black dress for this, you may even want to wake up tomorrow with it on a floor that isn’t yours.
I’m ready, you tell yourself in your head.
And for the first time since this whole thing started, you believe it.

Worry
Jay Halstead x reader
Summary: When Y/n has an accident with Jay's car, she fears his reaction. However, she is surprised by the real reason for his concern
Tumblr media
Y/n was still thinking about everything that had gone wrong that day. Her head hurt, probably from the cut on her forehead and the bruise that was beginning to form on her cheek. However, the guilt that settled in her body was the worst of all.
It all started when she woke up late for work. Since she was still an intern at the company, Y/n couldn't be late, or her boss would be even more unpleasant than usual. On top of that, she didn't have a car, as she left it at her house and spent the night at Jay's, her boyfriend of five months, who had picked her up from work.
So Jay lent her the car, saying Hailey could give him a ride. Little did she know that this would be the worst decision ever. When she was returning home at the end of the day, she was at an intersection when suddenly a dog ran into the street. As she tried to avoid it, she hit a car coming in the opposite direction.
The impact was enough for her to hit her head on the steering wheel, hence the cut and bruise. She was so scared, her ears were ringing and she only managed to come out of the shock when the driver of the other car got out of his vehicle and started banging on her window, screaming angrily at her.
Y/n's eyes burned with tears that threatened to fall down her cheeks, but the girl tried to stop them from falling. It would just make her more pathetic, she thought. Other drivers saw what had happened and called 911 and told them what had happened. Fortunately, the other vehicle wasn't as damaged as Jay's.
Her injuries were attended to on the spot, something Y/n couldn't have been happier about. So Will, Jay's brother, couldn't see her and call her boyfriend, only scaring him when he was working. They even let her drive home, since the car was drivable and she could decide which workshop to take it to for repairs.
Now, Y/n was sitting on the couch, anxiously waiting for Jay to get home. She had already thought of many ways on how to tell Jay what happened, but none of them calmed her nerves. He was going to be so upset, he lent her the car and she couldn't even be trusted with that.
Finally, she heard the keys open the door and Jay's voice echoed through the house, "Babe, are you here?" he questioned, hoping she had come to his house instead of going to her small apartment.
"In the living room." she said, keeping her gaze on the ground, not having the courage to look her boyfriend in the eyes and reveal to him what had happened to his precious car.
"Hey, baby." Jay smiled when he saw her sitting on the couch.
However, a frown quickly formed on his face when she didn't get up to greet him. Normally she would jump into his arms and kiss every part of his face until finally kissing his lips passionately. It was his favorite part of the day.
Y/n finally looked up at him when she felt him approaching her. Her eyes filled with tears again and her throat tightened when she saw Jay's face change when he noticed his injuries. He immediately got down on his knees in front of her, gently holding her chin so he could move her face and inspect her cut and bruise. She also noticed the way his hands were shaking.
"What the hell happened?" he questioned, feeling his heart tighten. His gaze then hardened, "Who did this to you? I'll kill them."
"Jay, I'm so sorry." Y/n murmured, her eyes filling with even more tears, which made Jay worry even more. What the hell had happened to his girlfriend and who did he have to beat?
"Why are you apologizing? I'm not understanding, baby. Tell me what happened so that I can fix it, yeah?"
"Your car…" the girl sobbed, unable to say a sentence without tears falling down her cheeks. Jay pulled her to his chest, hugging her until she calmed down enough to tell her what had happened. "A dog crossed the road and when I tried to avoid it I hit a car. And you trusted me with your car and I crashed. I'm so sorry, Jay, I really am and—"
"Slow down, Y/n. Breathe." Jay asked, alarmed by how her face was getting redder since she still hadn't stopped to inhale. His thumb stroked her uninjured cheek, hoping it would comfort her.
"No, I'm sorry. The car is still drivable, but it has a dent and is scratched. But I can afford the repair. I just need a few weeks and talk to my boss to pay me in advance, but I swear I'll sort this out. I know you need a car for work but you can use mine and I'll use the bus in the meantime."
"Y/n!" Jay exclaimed so she would finally shut up and listen to him. He cupped her cheeks carefully, forcing her to look directly at him. "Listen to me, you won't pay for anything. I don't care about the car, I care about you. So please calm down and tell me you're not hurt anywhere else. Please."
"I'm okay." she admitted, seeing Jay's body relax a little and he sighed in relief, running a hand over his face. "I'm just a little sore from the impact. The car is worse."
"Stop talking about the damn car or I swear I'll take it to the scrap yard to be destroyed. I can buy another car or live without it, but I can't live without you. God, Y/n when I saw your face all hurt I thought I was going to have a heart attack."
"I'm sorry…"
"No more apologizing." Jay was quick to order, giving her a stern look, but nothing hid the concern and love that was evident in his eyes. "Why didn't you call me? Did you go to the hospital? What did they say?"
"I didn't go to the hospital. The paramedics saw me there and said everything was fine."
Jay didn't answer her, suddenly getting up and going straight to his cell phone. His jaw was clenched and he looked like he was ready to have another mini heart attack.
"Who are you calling? Please don't bother Will just so he can come here and see how I'm doing. I'm fine, I promise."
"Either Will comes here or we go to the hospital. There's no room for discussion."
Y/n looked down shyly, knowing she wasn't going to win this argument. So, she waited for Jay to finish her call, definitely dramatizing her situation to Will.
When he hung up, he sat down next to her on the couch and brought her into his arms again. Jay squeezed her, needing to calm down and reassure him that she was relatively okay and safe. He placed his face on her neck, breathing in her perfume, which gave him an immediate comfort.
"Why didn't you call me?" he murmured, his voice breaking. He had never felt so worried as he did at that moment. He wouldn't be able to live if something had happened to his girlfriend. She was the one. The love of her life.
"I didn't want to bother you. You were working."
"Y/n, you can never bother me. Please, call me when something happens. I don't care if it's for the simplest reason, call me. I need to know that you're okay. I would never be able to forgive myself if something bothered you happened and I didn't know anything about it."
"I will. Again, I'm really sor—"
Y/n couldn't finish speaking when Jay's lips were on hers, kissing her fervently. He put all the love he felt for her into that kiss, one hand behind her head and the other on her unhurt cheek. Y/n responded to her kiss, placing her hands on his broad shoulders and pulling him closer.
Hesitantly, they broke the kiss so they could breathe. Their faces were so close that they could feel each other's breaths. Y/n snuggled closer to him, loving the feeling of security that only Jay could give her.
"I love you." Jay admitted in a low voice, not wanting to break the comfortable silence. He was looking into Y/n's eyes intensely, showing how true those words were.
Y/n's eyebrows rose upon hearing her boyfriend's confession. It was the first time Jay had said that to her. Her stomach filled with butterflies and a big smile appeared on her face, which calmed the detective's nerves. "I love you."
"God, I love you so much, baby." Jay kissed her again, his hands moving down to her waist.
However, their little make-out session was interrupted by a doorbell. Jay went to open the door, his lips slightly swollen and a smile on his face. However, he returned to his worried state when the doctor started treating Y/n.
His brother was under Jay's attentive gaze, analyzing everything the redhead did with crossed arms. When Will touched Y/n's bruised cheek and she flinched, the detective stepped forward and glared at his brother. "Careful."
Will gave him a look over his shoulder as if saying I'm the doctor here, but didn't open his mouth. Jay was stressed and Will didn't blame him, he knew how much his younger brother liked this girl. He had even told her about asking her to marry him with his mother's ring.
"I think everything is fine apart from that cut, which doesn't need stitches, and ice the bruise. Hmm, the pressure is still a little high. Has anything happened that could have stressed you even more apart from the accident?" Will asked in doctor mode.
"Uhm…" Y/n hesitated, looking shyly at Jay. "Well, let's just say the other driver wasn't too happy about me hitting his car. He was a little scary."
The silence that formed was horrible. Will cringed, knowing that Jay was going to completely flip out. He was already a nervous wreck, and this was only going to make his mood and worry worse. As expected by both, the detective let out a series of curse words, taking his hands to his hair and pulling it. He closed his eyes and clenched his wrists, trying to control himself. At that moment, he needed to comfort his girlfriend and then he would deal with the man who scared her.
"You know the car's registration number, right?" Jay asked her when he calmed down slightly. He sat on the couch, pulling Y/n onto his lap, feeling the need to always be touching her. Y/n nodded. "Good. I'll deal with him later."
"Well, it looks like my work here is done. Y/n, ice your cheek and disinfect the cut. If you feel any discomfort or pain, don't hesitate to call me."
"You sure she doesn't need to go to the hospital, Will?" Jay kissed Y/n's neck, feeling her snuggle closer to him and closing her eyes as she yawned.
"Nothing seems wrong. She just needs to rest and recover."
"Okay. Thanks, man."
"Thank you, Will." the girl opened her eyes and smiled slightly. Then she turned to Jay who instead of making an effort to get up, tightened his arms around her. "Aren't you going to accompany your brother out?"
"He knows the way out." he muttered. Will rolled his eyes, but smiled at the couple and left. He knew Jay would never let Y/n out of his sight again.
Jay kept tracing her cheek lovingly, which was making Y/n sleepy. "Are you tired, baby?"
"Yeah."
"Go to sleep. I'm going to take the week off and I will also call your boss saying you won't be going to work until you get better." Jay said, kissing her forehead.
"That's not necessary. I feel fine." Y/n tried to argue.
"It won't work, Y/n. You're going to stay at home and rest so I can take care of you. I need to know you are safe and okay. And the only way to know that is to have you in my arms. I'll never let you go."
"I kind of like that idea." she chuckled.
"Good." he said, continuing to soothe her into unconsciousness. When he felt Y/n's breathing calm down, indicating that she was asleep, Jay pulled out his phone, calling Voight. "I need you to research the owner of a vehicle. Find what you can to get him arrested, parking tickets, speed limits, I don't care. He scared my girl."
"You got it, Jay. Take care of Y/n."
"I will. Bye." he hung up and focused his attention on his girlfriend again. She was so perfect. "I love you, baby. So much."

“Halstead, third time in a month, that’s a record even for you.”
An amused expression appeared on your face as you entered the room of the patient you were supposed to see, who turned out to be no one other than Jay Halstead. He was lying on the bed, his back resting on the raised headboard and a bored expression on his face which however disappeared as soon as he saw you enter.
“Oh yeah I couldn't wait to see you, Dr. Sunshine,” he replied, letting his eyes wander unscrupulously along your uniform-covered figure, before returning them to your face and giving you a full on smile.
This was a nickname Jay had given you since the first moment you met and since then he had never stopped calling you that. In fact, since that day he had noticed how you always had a smile on your lips, constantly, how nothing seemed to disturb you. You always had a happy and serene expression on your face and this was one of the things that most attracted him from the beginning.
The two of you had met some time ago when Jay had arrived at Med's to question a suspect who he had injured during a chase and who you had taken into care.
He remembered how impressed he was with you when he first saw you, he couldn't deny you were a beautiful woman. But it was the marked humor with which you addressed him and your sharp but nice jokes that truly mesmerized him. While you two talked in front of that helpless patient who did nothing but bring his eyes between you and the detective, Jay found himself being attracted more and more to you, feeling the ever-increasing desire to get to know you better.
After that exchange in front of the patient, you left Jay talking to the suspect and walked out of the room, winking at him before closing the door behind you and leaving Jay standing there looking like an idiot.
Needless to say, as soon as he finished questioning the suspect, he immediately turned to his brother with the aim of asking for information about you. He didn't know why but he wanted to know everything he could about you. He had looked for you so he could have the opportunity to talk to you again but you were already with another patient.
From that day you had never left Jay's mind or his thoughts.
He found himself going to Med's every time for all sorts of reasons, most of which involved having to say something to his brother who couldn't help but make fun of the detective. You obviously weren't stupid and there was no shortage of your comments regarding the fact there was a very different reason behind those visits to which Jay responded with some mischievous joke that made you blush from head to toe.
However, there was no shortage of visits either due to some injuries Jay got due to his job but that didn't stop him from shamelessly flirting with you even if he was on a hospital bed.
He loved this relationship that had been created between you, the flirting, teasing each other, and every opportunity was perfect to see you but he wanted more. He struggled to admit it to himself but he had a huge crush on you and the fact he couldn't read you and know what you were thinking was driving him crazy. He was getting tired of looking at you from afar, of hiding behind the flirty jokes, he wanted you.
You giggled and looked at him for a moment as you quickly examined his body for injuries. Or at least that's what you convinced yourself of. You were pretty good at hiding your feelings because to say that damn detective gave you goosebumps and set every cell in your body on fire was an understatement.
You sanitized your hands and put on a pair of clean gloves before approaching him, his eyes never leaving yours and just the way he looked at you made you shiver from head to toe and your knees tremble.
Focus Y/n, he’s a patient now.
“What did you do this time?” You asked and he rolled his eyes playfully.
“You're no fun dammit, always straight to the point.”
“You know me Halstead,” you replied. “So?”.
He shrugged nonchalantly. “Just a little cut while chasing a suspect, no big deal.”
Your gaze fell on his abdomen, at the level of his left side where you noticed a copious stain of blood. “Well let me be the judge since I’m the doctor. Lift your shirt up.”
His lips lifted into a mischievous grin and you rolled your eyes knowing where his mind had immediately gone. “If you want to undress me just say so Dr. Sunshine, there's no need for these excuses.”
He took off his shirt and you tried with every fiber of your being to try to maintain a composed and professional expression, trying not to look his abs and not to focus on the heat that was spreading through your body.
You swallowed the lump in your throat but you couldn't help but admire that Greek God laying in front of you. “You didn't need to take off your shirt Halstead.” You said in an amused tone before pulling up a chair and sitting next to the bed.
“Well, you know I'm a self-centered bastard,” he retorted and you rolled your eyes again as you began to examine the wound. “Plus I love the way you’re struggling not to jump on me right now.”
You flicked your gaze into his eyes, not responding but maintaining eye contact as he looked at you as if he wanted to undress you right then and there. The heat spreading through your body intensified and rose to your cheeks and you struggled to say anything because, damn, he was just telling the truth.
“J-just, let me do my job Halstead,” you murmured and cursed yourself for the way you stuttered. You looked away and back to his wound and he chuckled, probably aware of the effect it had on you.
You examined his wound. It was a stab wound and luckily it wasn't very deep so it only required a bit of disinfection and a couple of stitches. You took what you needed and sat next to Jay again, who continued to watch and examine your movements with meticulous attention.
“I'll numb the area so I can stitch you,” you said in a firm, professional tone of voice but refusing to look at him. You couldn't do it, not when his eyes were enough to make you a babbling mess.
You tried to maintain all the concentration you possessed, failing miserably as Jay was laying there in front of you with his shirt off.
You couldn't help but let your gaze travel down his abdomen, along his hips, the V-line disappearing into his boxers you so much wanted to trace with your tongue, the line of his underwear that slightly protruded from his pants.
He was so fucking hot and you were about to be burned.
Your breathing quickened even though you tried to keep yourself composed but this didn't escape Jay, who didn't take his eyes off you for even a second.
He carefully scanned your profile and features, the way your eyelids and eyelashes fluttered, the way your cheeks were flushed and he knew it was because of him, the way you were trying to avoid him even if you were attracted to him like a magnet.
“You're so beautiful Y/n, you know that?” he murmured before he could stop himself.
You almost dropped the pliers you were holding, taken aback by his words. You giggled, keeping your expression as neutral as possible even though that short and simple phrase had thrown you into a whirlwind of overwhelming emotions and sensations.
“And you know I’m your doctor right?”.
“Mmh just for now,” he replied “As soon as you're done you won't be anymore.”
“You're actually one of my most loyal patients.” You gave him an amused look, a smirk on your lips as you continued to stitch his wound. “Like I said, you're breaking every record so no, you can't make those comments it's very unethical of you.”
There was nothing ethical about Jay's sinful thoughts about you, but he didn't let them out at the time.
He laughed, never taking his eyes off you. “Since we see each other so often we’re more than just doctor/patient now, I’d say I have every right to tell you’re beautiful.”
“Stop it.” You gave him a fake disappointed look even if you were internally giggling like a little girl. “Am I hurting you? You feel anything?” You also asked but the smug expression on his face and the smirk on his lips had given you the answer you needed.
He shook his head. “Come to a date with me.”
Your heart started beating wildly, more than it already was since the first moment you say Jay laying on that bed. “Is this a question or an order?”.
“You want to tell me no?”.
“Jay, I need to focus.”
“That's not a no though, so I have some hope.”
You laughed, at the tenacity and cheekiness he was showing and to mask the nervousness you were feeling, God, you didn't know how long you could last before giving in.
After about ten minutes you finished suturing his wound and placed gauze over it, recommending him to disinfect it and change the gauze at least twice a day even though he did nothing but flirt with you.
You stood up and removed your gloves before throwing them into the bin along with the dirty gauze you had used earlier and disinfected your hands.
You glanced at Jay, noticing he had sat up in bed, still wonderfully bare-chested. For the second time you found yourself running your eyes over his frame, his broad shoulders, his muscular arms and toned chest.
That man oozed sex from every pore of his body and you no longer knew what to do to resist him.
“Why are you this far? I don't bite, you know.” He said with a wicked smile on his lips, not even trying to mask the way he was eye-fucking you.
You rolled your eyes for the thousand time and crossed your arms over your chest, remaining firm in your position even if with difficulty. You felt as if there was some kind of force pushing you towards him and as the minutes passed you were less and less able to fight it.
“Don't you have to go back to work?”.
“Not until you give me an answer.”
“About what?”.
“About the date.”
“You didn’t ask me though.”
“Well will come to a date with me?”.
You tried to suppress a chuckle but didn't answer, keep losing yourself in those two emeralds that were his eyes.
You didn't have to hesitate like that, you didn't even have to think about it. You were a doctor, he was your patient and there was nothing more immoral.
But then why didn't you say no? Why were you actually thinking about that?
Jay stood up and walked over you noticing your silence, standing a step away from you.
Still shirtless.
God please have some mercy on me.
You raised your head slightly so you could look in his eyes given your height difference, the words dying in your throat every time you tried to say something.
It was undeniable there was an attraction between you two that in one way or another always pushed you towards each other. It was undeniable that man made you feel things you hadn't felt in a long time.
You didn't know what he had done to you, what kind of witchcraft he had practiced on you since there had never even been anything between you. Sure, you flirted with him too, he shamelessly hit on you and sometimes you didn't even know if he was serious or just because of the way your relationship had turned, but you couldn't get him out of your mind.
“You're thinking about it, aren't you? I know you want it,” he whispered, lifting a hand and stroking your hair, moving a strand behind your ear as his eyes continued to admire and analyze every little feature of your face.
You let your arms drop to your sides, dumbfounded as his fingers caressed your skin so lightly his touch seemed unnoticeable. But you felt it all, you felt his touch in every corner of your body.
Your breathing quickened as your eyes alternated between his and his mouth, without even being able to stop yourself.
“We can't,” you whispered back.
“Why not? We both want it, I know it and you know it too.” He wet his lips with his tongue. “And the way you're looking at me now, fuck… I'm fighting every fiber of my body not to throw you on this bed and have my way with you. You can't deny it Y/n, you can’t deny what's going on between us.”
Before you knew it, your hands were resting on his chest, his skin hot under your fingers and his breathing visibly quickening under your touch. “And who tells me it's not just the thrill of conquest? That once I say yes you won't just disappear?”.
His hands cupped your face, his lips so close to yours they kept brushing each other. “I’m planning to do so many things to you that a lifetime won't be enough Y/n, you're not just a conquest. I want you.”
His thumb traced the outline of your bottom lip and your breath hitched, almost making you pass out at his feet.
God Jay what are you doing to me?
“You really think every time I'm here it's to see Will? Don't get me wrong, I love my brother but do you seriously think I'm here almost every day just to see him? Do you seriously think I would randomly find myself at Molly's every night whenever you're there? Do you think I’d let myself get stabbed just to have another excuse to come here and see you?”.
You pulled away from him, hitting him in the chest in disbelief. “Are you out of your goddamn mind?! I hope you're kidding.”
“Do you see me laughing? I'm not fucking kidding. I could’ve easily overpower that piece of shit but you got into my head so much that at that moment I just thought I had the perfect excuse to see you and be close to you. That's how fucking insane you make me Y/n. Please just give me a chance, I want you so bad,” he spoke, not caring about how desperate he sounded.
Now that he had said it out loud he realized how crazy he really was. But did he care? Absolutely not. He just wanted you to accept to go to that date.
“And it's not just wanting to have sex with you. I mean, God yes, you turn me one so much I would fuck you on every floor and surface of this hospital… But I want everything, I want to know every single part of you, the good and the bad, I want you to be mine, I want you to know me and I want to be yours.”
You sighed in frustration, the temperature of the room rising a degree with each passing second. How were you supposed to push him away?
“Tell me you don't want me and I'm leaving right now and you'll never hear from me again. Tell me you don't feel like this thing between us is consuming you too... Tell me,” he continued, brushing his nose with yours.
“You're so unprofessional Jay,” you whispered, trying so hard to fight the urge to give in but, fuck, you didn't think it would be this hard.
“Yeah so unprofessional. Now answer me.”
You sighed. “Jay I…”
“God you're so stubborn Dr. Sunshine, you really want to torture me until the end? Have mercy on me at least now that I'm… Shit,” he stopped, holding his side where he had been stabbed and letting out a cry of pain.
“Jay! Hey, what's going on? Talk to me please.”
“Fuck it hurts.”
“Here, let me help you. Sit down so I can take another look at you. Everything will be fine.”
You helped him sit on the edge of the bed, worried and thinking of every possible scenario imaginable like an internal bleeding.
But when he instead surrounded your hips under your white coat and pulled you towards him, making you settle between his legs, you understood that asshole was just faking it.
“You piece of shit! You've got me worried sick!” You exclaimed, hitting his shoulder harder this time. You tried to pull away from him but his grip was too tight around your waist.
He laughed, a cocky look on his face that only made you want to punch him. “Look at you so worried about me. Just as I thought.”
“You thought about what? That you’re an asshole?”.
“Yes I am,” he replied amused, “But also that all this facade you want to put up, all this resistance is fake. That you want me as much as I want you, so why do you keep fighting it so much?”.
“Because it’s unprofessional, I'm a doctor and you're my patient. We can't.”
“Of course we can.” His hands tightened around your waist, moving up your hips, distracting you and making you forget what you even wanted to say. “Like I said. Look me in the eyes and tell me you don’t want me.”
You didn't answer, again.
You just looked at him and melted under his touch.
You didn't know what happened, it was like a switch had been turned on inside you.
All your rational thoughts and abilities left your mind as you grabbed his face and crashed your lips onto his.
You didn't want to resist anymore, especially since you weren’t strong enough. Let's be honest, it was a battle you already lost from the start.
You didn't want to live in fear of what might happen, hide behind the hypocrisy of 'unprofessionalism' because the truth was that you wanted that man more than anyone you had ever met in your life. The truth was, you couldn't look him in the eyes and tell him you didn't want him when just hearing his name made your heart beat wildly and your body lit up on fire.
Jay kissed you back, not even being able to explain how ardently and for how long he wanted that moment.
You parted your lips slightly and he immediately took the opportunity to slip his tongue in your mouth, deepening the kiss which was becoming more and more passionate, borderline pornographic.
His hands rested on your stomach and moved up your abdomen, grazing your breasts before settling on your shoulders. He hesitated and you nodded during the kiss, giving him permission to take off your white coat which fell to the floor next to your feet.
His hands then trailed down back to your ass which he squeezed and groped without any shame as you threaded your fingers through his hair, sighing into his mouth at the sensation.
If at first there was a thread of doubt that left you perplexed, after finally feeling his lips against yours, their taste, you knew there would never be a return from that point. You were deeply and inexorably lost for Jay Halstead.
Your heart was pounding as your body continued to press against his, as if you were both trying to suck out each other's souls.
You bit his lower lip and a small moan escaped him which immediately made you press your legs to each other, your insides twist and goosebumps on your skin. He slapped your ass in response, a gesture that turned you on more than you would ever admit.
“Fuck,” you whimpered, pulling him towards you.
“I'll take this as a yes?” He whispered the moment you both broke apart panting as you tried to catch your breath.
He slid his hands down your back, up your ass, your thighs, touching and caressing every inch of your body he could reach.
“What do you think?” You replied, one eyebrow raised.
“I can't even think right now to be honest, all the blood has rushed to my dick. It actually hurts a little, can you kiss it better?”.
“You’d really love it wouldn’t you?”.
“Oh you have no idea how many times I’ve imagined you kissing me better, especially my dick. This mouth of yours is haunting me princess.”
You chuckled – not mentioning how bad you wanted to do it – and he smiled back, feeling lighter, happier.
“Is tomorrow night okay?”.
“Tomorrow night? Are you kidding me? You really think I can last until tomorrow especially after you kissed me like that? No, there’s no chance. I want to see you tonight.”
“Oh Halstead, remember that patience is the virtue of the strong,” You smirked at him, caressing his shoulders. “See you tomorrow night detective.”
You gave him one last sweet kiss on the lips and picked up your white coat from the floor, then straightening out your wrinkled uniform. You winked at him before exiting the room, leaving him sitting on the edge of that bed with an erection in his pants he knew he’d struggle to keep at bay for the next twenty-four hours.

too busy [ jay halstead ]
SUMMARY ─ jay’s somehow always too busy, and it gets more and more tiring with each excuse he uses
PROMPT ─ [ falling out of love 13 ] spending less and less time with your lover, claiming ''they're busy'' when your family asks why they no longer come to visit with you
WARNINGS ─ female!reader, angst [ implied cheating, falling out of love + missed dates ] + mature language
Tumblr media
[ jay ] : gonna have to cancel again, something came up with work
your eyes had flickered over the text message what seemed like a thousand times. all with the hopes that maybe it would somehow change, or another text would magically appear stating he would show later. yet, neither was ever going to be a plausible reality.
sucking in a deep breath, you entered molly’s. immediately warmed by the atmosphere and the loud mix of music and chattering. shuffling through the crowd, you quickly found the rest of your truck mates from 51, smiling as they greeted you happily before ushering you onto a stool, “what you drinking tonight?” stella smiled, hooking an arm around your shoulders as she pulled you in for a light hug, “i’ll take a beer.”
“so, where’s jay?” mouch questions from his seat in front of you, raising a brow as you offer him a gentle smile -- inwardly cursing yourself for saying you’d bring him by after being hounded over that fact they hadn’t seen you together in over a month, “he really wanted to come, but they have this big case and voight wants all hands on deck.”
“that’s a shame, we really hoped he’d be here tonight. you know, it’s been - “ you wave off her words before finishing, “ - since you’ve seen him, i know. he’s just been busy is all...” you trail off, thanking cruz for the drink before taking a hefty sip, hoping it would calm your frantic heartbeat. knowing if they could hear it, they’d know you’re lying through your teeth.
the truth is you didn’t know why jay was busy every time you wanted to go out together. and to make matters worse, you got to the point of not asking him to even go, knowing he would just come back and say he’s busy. the thought of cheating crossed your mind every now and then, finding it to be a reasonable explanation as why he was constantly standing you up for dates. yet, there was never any proof he was even doing such a thing.
his absence never squashed your mood, and you always found yourself forgetting he existed during your time out with friends, even going as far as to openly flirt with someone you found interesting, until slowly walking back to your car at the end of the night knowing you weren’t exactly single.
so, by the end of this night, as you said goodbyes to all your friends you headed for your car. still warmed from the alcohol coursing through your system that you didn’t even notice the harsh breeze that had blown through the nearly empty street. and just like clock work, you drove back towards your shared apartment, mentally flipping a coin as to whether jay would even be home even though it was well past midnight.
it was no surprise to find the apartment still dark and bare. like no one had been home since you had left to join your friends at molly’s. and whether it was your drunk filled stupor making these last minute decisions, you’re not entirely sure, but the old suitcase is now laying open atop the mattress and you’re shoving everything you can possibly fit into it.
anything that you can’t fit, goes into another bag that you plan to pick up at a later time, knowing what you pack in there isn’t needed where you’re going. which is still undecided in that moment as you zip the suitcase closed.
the first phone call you make is to stella, you’re oddly calm voice ringing through the receiver as you ask her if you can stay with her for a little bit, just until you find a place of your own. she questions you, wondering what exactly is going on until you tell her you’ll explain everything once you get to her apartment.
the second phone call you make is to jay, yet as the dial tone rings for a third time in your ear, you know then he isn’t going to pick up. so, instead, you leave him a message. hoping at one point he may just listen to it when he actually remembers who you are and what you’re supposed to mean to him.
the second you’re on stella’s doorstep, she’s ushering you in with a concerned look. taking your things into her spare bedroom and cornering you onto the couch to explain what’s going on. that’s the first time you break down, letting out the months of bottled and tearful emotions as she comforts you with sad eyes.
across town, jay’s finally stepping out from his almost three-hour restaurant date, still at little buzzed from the alcohol he had. he fishes for his phone, pulling it from his jacket pocket and raised a confused brow when he sees a missed call and voicemail from you.
lifting the phone to his ear, the voicemail plays, “i’m not sure when you’ll hear this. but i’m hoping you may at one point tonight. i’m not sure when you fell out of love with me, and i’m not even sure when i started making excuses for you. maybe i was scared, cause somewhere deep down, i knew what was going on but i just couldn’t bring myself to accept it. the only thing i wish is that you would have been brave enough to tell me to my face, instead of slowly ghosting me. either way, i’m not sure i can keep pretending anymore. i won’t be there when you get home. but i’ll be back in the morning before work to grab the rest of my things. hopefully, you won’t be too busy for someone in the future.”

Blind Date
Halstead reader x Jay halstead
Requested
Warnings: bad writing. misogynistic comments.
Synopsis: Your date goes horribly and Jay thinks it's the funniest thing ever.
Tumblr media
Note to self; never let Gallo set you up a blind date again. Never, ever let him within 50 feet of your dating life. And while you are at it, make sure Violet and Ritter get what's coming for their peer pressure in all of this.
"You know," Violet said, sitting down next to you at the table one shift, "One of us has to have a successful dating life and it might as well be you."
You turned and scowled at her, "Why me?"
Violet grinned, "Gallo is a lost cause and Ritter is, well, Ritter."
The two sitting across from you looked up from their plates and made mumbled protests. Violet shooed her hand at them, shutting them up. She turned back to you and started rattling off ideas to find you a date.
"What about a blind date?" Ritter said in passing, grinning as you scowled at him.
"I know the perfect guy! I went to the academy with him," Gallo said, growing excited in his typical Gallo way.
You screwed up your nose in disgust, "When has a blind date ever been a good experience?"
"Blind dates are fun!" Gallo protested.
Hermann gave Gallo an incredulous look as he walked by, muttering about Gallo's stupidity.
You laughed, "I'm with Hermann on this."
Ritter shrugged, trying to hide his grin, "Hey, maybe it will be fun. You never know until you actually go."
-
Oh, man were those three going to pay the next shift. You were sitting opposite one of the stupidest firefighters you had ever met. You spent the entire first half of the meal listening to him recount how he had made the record at the academy for whatever, you had almost completely zoned him out.
You were both finishing your meal when he finally asked something about you, "So you work at Firehouse 51 right?"
"Yea-"
"Man!" He interrupted, "That house has so many rumours! Don't you all live together or something?"
"Uh, I mean I guess?"
"Yeah, my house is super tight too, we'd die for each other ya know?" He launched into a recounting of when he almost died in a warehouse fire. Does this man ever stop talking about himself?
You finally finished your meal when he wrapped up his story. The young waitress came over and asked how your meal was, "Are y'all after the dessert menu?"
"No," You said at the same time your date said yes.
He laughed awkwardly, you completely ignored him.
"No, thank you," You clarified for the waitress, "Thank you though."
She returned with the bill after a few more moments, which you split and started to get ready to leave. Your date was almost dragging his feet, you regretted letting him pick you up.
"So, you and Gallo went to the academy at the same time?" You asked as you got into his passenger seat.
"Yeah!" He grinned, "Gallo and I were head to head during the academy, expected him to make squad already."
You nodded, "I'm sure he will soon," You and Gallo talked about making Squad a lot, both of you actively trying to pursue it, "We train together a lot."
Your date laughed, "You train for Squad?"
You frowned, "Yeah? Severiade said I have a real chanc-"
"Ha! Yeah right, a women firefighter on squad?"
You stared at him in awe, "What's wrong with that?"
He looked over at you as he realized you were offended, "Look, you have to be honest. The only reason female firefighters exist is that the academy lowered the physical standards and woke culture at work."
It took you a few seconds to actually process what he said. When you did, you replied, "Ok yeah. Uh, Pull over, now."
"What? Why?"
"Pull over!" You demanded, "Let me out now."
He pulled to the side of the street, watching with a frown as you got out of his car and grabbed your bag, "Take this as a no to a second date."
You slammed the door and started walking down the street. Never let a date pick you up, that was your second mistake. The first mistake was letting Gallo near your dating life.
You pulled out your phone, opening the group chat you Gallo, Ritter and Violet were in.
Blind dates are the worst, I hate you, Gallo.
You watched Ritter and Violet immediately respond with laughing emojis. You ignored the conversation and opened your phone to see if Jay was working. You knew there was a good chance he would be working, but if he was too busy you could always try Will.
"Halstead," Jay answered the phone after three rings.
"Do you not check Caller ID?"
You could hear the pause as Jay rolled his eyes, it was your greeting now. "What do you want?"
You giggled, "Are you at work?"
"Yeah, sitting in the Bullpen, why?"
"Any chance you can come get me? I'm stranded." You said sheepishly.
"Stranded?" He asked.
"Gallo set me up on a blind date and I couldn't be around that prick anymore so, I walked out," You explained, bracing yourself for his response.
"Who goes on blind dates anymore?" He chuckled, clearly trying to hide how amused he was.
"Don't be mean," You heard Hailey in the background.
"Yeah! Don't be mean to your little sister who is stranded in downtown Chicago in the middle of the night," You replied.
"Alright, Alright," Jay sighed, "Where are you?"
You relayed your location to him, rattling off the street signs around you.
"Okay, just stay there, Hailey and I will be there in ten."
You sighed, putting your phone back in your pocket and crossed your arms over your chest. There was no way you would hear the end of this from anyone in intelligence. You could already hear Ruzek and Atwater's jokes about how terrible an idea blind dates were.
You were about to text Jay and ask him where he was, when you heard police sirens from a few streets over.
Please, lord no.
The black police car came around the corner much slower than was necessary, you could see Jay grinning like the Cheshire cat through the windscreen. The few people who were on the street looked over at the commotion, you could feel their stares as Jay did a U-turn and pulled up beside you.
He turned off the sirens, climbing out of the car.
"What are you doing out here alone, young lady?"
"Jesus Christ, Jay," You sighed, smacking his chest, "Do you make everything in a commotion?"
"Ma'am, did you just assault my partner?" Hailey called from the passenger seat.
You threw your hands up, "I should have just walked home!"

How Dare You
Jay Halstead x Reader (female) | gym crush | bad decisions
"So what's the matter? Why not pursue her then? Ask her out!" -Will was genuinely confused.
"I can't!" -Jay was so down.
Tumblr media
His younger brother, Jay; popular, hot, good looking, easily gets girls. Now, is with him in Molly's and brooding and complaining and going in circles of self-pity and regret.
"This is new to me. Jay, couldn't get a girl. Why?"
"Because I rejected her."
"What?!? I don't understand."
Jay was working out in this gym when someone walked up to him.
"Hi." -Y/N waved at him.
"Can I help you?" -Jay took his earpods off.
"Yeah, uhm, hi. Sorry to bother you. I want to introduce myself, I'm Y/N. And uh, I... can I get your name? -Y/N was nervous.
Jay is not new to being approached and asked out. So this isn't unfamiliar. He somehow knew what's next.
"Oh. I'm Jay. Jay Halstead."
"Hi. Jay... so uhm, I've been... You've been my gym crush for months now and I would like to ask you out. Will you go out with me, Jay?" -Y/N was blushing and stuttering.
"Oh, Y/N. I'm sorry but I'm not interested in you." -Jay was frank. And Y/N isn't really Jay's type.
"Oh... oh, uhm, yeah. Okay. I understand... T-Thank you for being straight with me." -Y/N keep gesturing it's okay and started walking away.
But she had a near death experience a few weeks back and that changed her perspective on a lot of things. So she walked back to Jay.
"Jay, hey. Sorry. I understand, I respect your decision but... I'm sorry, I had a life or death situation before and it changed my outlook on a lot of things. And I don't wanna regret anything. So I'm... sorry, but please, go out with me. Just once. Just one date and I promise you, I'm not gonna bother you after." -Y/N was stuttering and her voice was shaking.
Jay looked down and shook his head. He had a lot of near deaths too. And he knows the feeling. He understands and he admires that.
"Okay. One date." -Jay smiled at Y/N.
"T-Thanks! Thanks a lot! Oh, uhm, wow. Okay, can I get your number so we could talk where and when?" -Y/N took her phone out.
"Uhm, how about this? Tomorrow. Here. You decide the time." -Jay was clear at the beginning that he isn't interested, so he isn't comfortable giving his number. And he's had a fair share of crazy girls hounding him for weeks.
"Oh. Yeah, sure. I understand... okay, tomorrow, here, uhm... 8am?" -Y/N placed her phone back in her pocket.
"8?"
"S-Sorry, I figured since I only have one date, I'd use the whole day. Don't worry, I'll bring you back by 7pm."
"Okay... Yeah. That would work."
"Okay. Thanks again." -Y/N waved goodbye and left Jay to do exercises again.
Y/N was a mix of excitement and nervousness.
-+-+-+-
That night, Y/N was panicking. She started to regret pushing Jay on a date. She started to regret saying anything at all. She was scared and nervous.
She doesn't do that often. Ask guys out. She never did. She never asked anyone out no matter how much she likes them. She never made the first move. But Jay is different. She likes him a lot. And it's one of her biggest regrets when she was in the hospital.
But there's no going back now. She had asked, -or rather, forced- Jay out on a date with her. So she has to do her best. She started planning everything for tomorrow. Where to go, what to do, eat, etc etc.
-+-+-+-
The next day, Y/N was early. Jay was right on time. They greeted each other. Both in just casual wear. Y/N smiled at Jay and asked him if he had coffee yet. To which Jay said no, not yet.
So, Y/N took him to Jay's frequent cafe. She figured it out from seeing Jay walk in with a coffee cup with the cafe's logo.
They lined up. It was quiet. Jay was quiet. Y/N was quiet. Because Y/N doesn't really know what to say. She's the quiet type.
They got their coffee and Y/N asked if they could sit by the park.
"Thanks. I just don't do well in crowded places." -Y/N was chuckling nervously.
"Understandable." -Jay sat next to her. Not too close, not too far either.
"Yeah... so..." -Y/N started talking. Small talks. Basic questions. Ask Jay about himself. And Jay asked her about herself too.
Jay, being a detective, kinda figured Y/N isn't used to doing this. The nerves and the blushing and the stuttering: dead giveaways.
Jay looked away for a while and smiled. Jay commends her for the courage. So Jay took his guard down a bit, and became more receptive.
Their talk became more casual. Some itsy bits of silent moment from time to time. But Y/N would find a topic to start talking again.
They decided to walk around the park. Talking about themselves. Discovering some hobbies and movies and series that they both like. Y/N was still nervous though. She kept taking glances at Jay. How Jay looks so good right now. And she hoped she look half as good as him at least.
They have different opinions on some things but would still find something similar with each other. Jay was kind and accommodating the whole conversation. He was being nice.
They headed out of the park and started walking out to the busy streets. Y/N was kinda lost. She doesn't really know where to go next. She lost bits of her plans from nervousness.
And Y/N was scared because he can see Jay could tell she's a little lost on things. Y/N began to panic a little. She doesn't want Jay to have a bad time on a date she insisted on.
She quickly looked around and saw a comic convention happening. Y/N was hesitating, because Jay might find it weird. But Y/N took a gamble. From the information she got on their talk in the park, she felt that Jay might appreciate this convention too.
"Jay, let's go check it out, huh?" -Y/N pointed at the convention hall.
"Sure."
They started crossing the street. Y/N was scared to death because Jay's answer was just one word. That's not good, right? Oh oh.
Y/N bought them tickets. The moment they stepped in, they were met with cosplayers and con-goers. Y/N looked at Jay's expression: he was confused. This is definitely something new to him.
"Uhm, Jay? Are you okay here?"
"Yeah. I'm good... Did they buy those clothes?" -Jay got curious.
"Oh. Yes and no." -Y/N perked up.
"Yes and no?"
"Yes, you could buy a set of costumes, and no, sometimes they make them from scratch."
"They make those?" -Jay eyeing the elaborate costumes and props.
"Yeah! You see." -Y/N started talking a lot. Y/N did cosplay before so she knows a lot about making costumes and props.
Jay was kinda surprised at how Y/N changed. She was nervous and lost a while ago but now, she's lively and talking so passionately. She lit up. She smiled. She laughed. She relaxed.
Y/N was having fun at the convention, dragging Jay along. She became selfish a bit. She thought: okay, I've never been in a convention for a long time. Oh well, I'd just be me. Better real me than fake me.
And Jay was warming up to it. Jay walked into this date not really expecting anything. He wasn't interested, remember? But he started to have fun too. Seeing Y/N have fun.
Until lunch hunger hit them.
"Uhm, Jay? Would you like to get lunch now?" -Y/N was looking at her watch.
"Yeah. I'm starving."
"I know a great japanese place. Do you like japanese?"
"Yeah, I do eat them. But not often."
Y/N smiled at him and they walked towards the japanese restaurant. Y/N asked Jay if he likes seafood or chicken or beef, to which Jay just said: all is okay with me. Order for me. You know this place more than I do.
So, Y/N ordered a platter meal with samples of all. Chicken, beef, and shrimp tempura and some rice. Y/N ordered one ramen too. Jay could tell Y/N loves her japanese cuisine.
Food arrived and they eat and talk some more. Jay grew more and more intrigued by Y/N. She paid for everything. After all, she insisted on this date that Jay initially didn't wanna go to.
After lunch, they headed back to the convention for a while. And then Y/N decided she'd like to spend the afternoon in the classic arcade.
"Uhm, yeah, I know. Cliché but I want to try." -Y/N shyly said.
Jay laughed a bit. "Yeah, cliché, but it's been a while since I played in the arcade."
So they went. And so it was Jay's turn to light up.
Jay remembered when he was younger, he frequents the arcades. Playing the cop, shooting game. And sinking some hoops in the basketball ring area. Y/N played with him throughout.
The shooting game, of course Jay did well, holding the toy gun expertly and shooting accurately. Almost getting to the end of the game if not for Y/N dying and losing tokens.
So they moved on to the basketball hoops. Y/N was competitive there. Spending quite a few tokens for a couple of rematches. They spent some tokens on claw machines too. Though getting nothing out of it.
After playing all the games they liked, they decided to call it quits. They walked the streets now.
Both of them relaxed by now. Talking and talking about things they have in common.
"Uhm, yeah. So... thanks for today, Jay."
"H-Huh?" -Jay didn't notice, he was having fun. He didn't notice they were back at the gym front. "...Oh."
"Yeah. Sorry, it's a little late than promised."
It was an hour past the agreed 7pm.
"It's okay." -Jay was having mixed emotions. He didn't expect much of this date. But he doesn't want the day to end either.
"Jay. Sorry for forcing you into this date. But I hope you had a great time."
"Y-Yeah. I did." -Jay really did. It's been a while since he let loose. Since he played in the arcade. Talked about his hobbies. The movies he likes. And the series he watches.
He only ever talks about work lately. With coworkers too. Drinking at Molly's and talking about more work. It's been a while since he had real fun. No work talks. No worries about work. No stress about work.
"Thanks Jay. And goodbye." -Y/N waved at him and began walking away.
Crossed the street and boarded the bus.
Jay watched her go. And he started getting this sinking feeling. That he may have made a bad decision.
Tumblr media
He couldn't blame Y/N. He did reject her the first time. He couldn't just go and pretend that that didn't happen. He wanted to extend the date, take Y/N to Molly's and have a few drinks, get to know her more. But he can't do anything but wait for the next gym day to come. And there, he'd see what the situation is. If he could go and talk to Y/N again.
-+-+-+-
Jay was early on his gym day. He waited for Y/N to walk in. But she didn't. Jay just thought maybe Y/N skipped a day. And would be back tomorrow.
But she never did. It's been 2 weeks and Y/N never walked back into the gym. Jay figured she must've transferred to another... remembering her say, -no, promise- that after the date, she'd never bother him again.
And this must be Y/N's way of not bothering him again.
Jay regretted not getting Y/N's number. He's left currently with nothing. He did thought about asking the gym front desk for Y/N's info but he knows he'll never get that. Data privacy and all.
He did also thought to try to run Y/N's name in the PD system, but he didn't get her full name. It would take a significant amount of time to go through all the similar names in the system, both: the records of those with offenses and those who doesn't. Plus, he couldn't keep going through them, because the searches are logged and recorded.
And here he is, in Molly's, ranting to his brother about it...
Will was quiet a while. This is a first. He reached for his drink and downed it all.
Jay was looking so miserable. "Believe me, I want to. But I couldn't. Because I rejected her. I feel ashamed. Rejecting her, saying she's not my type and then what? Come up now saying: hey, I changed my mind."
"Exactly. That's exactly what you're gonna do. You never know, Jay. Just call her, tell her you lik her and ask her to talk about it."
"I don't have her number."
"What?!?"
"She tried getting mine, I didn't give mine. So we never texted. I never got her number. And I never asked until the end."
"O-kay~..." -Will ordered another bottle of beer. This is the predicament. "So, uhm, you're a detective. You could find her, right?"
"I'm trying." -Jay was walking around after work, on other gyms. And is going back to the arcade they played at. Everyday. Hoping he'd see Y/N there.
"In the gym. Her friends in the gym. Ask them?"
"She goes alone."
"Her work? Did she say where she works?"
"She did. She's a designer. Home based."
"And she didn't say where her home is?"
"Yeah."
"Okay... what if, she stays at home all the time and only goes out for groceries or gym.. near her house. Oh yeah, you won't see her again."
Jay gave Will the side eye.
"Sorry. Sorry. I'm just thinking of possibilities. She said she had an accident? Did she go to Med? I could ask around if she did."
"Yeah. She never went into details about that. And I never asked."
"Oh... okay, maybe the conventions? She might go there."
"... Yeah. That's a good option."
Jay googled for all the pop culture conventions schedule.
"Coz it's impossible to not see her again around here. Unless she moved cities or states."
"Ugh, I hope not."
"Why did you even reject her in the first place?!? I mean, okay, I get it. You don't like her, at that time, but you could've said: sorry I can't go on a date or something. Instead of saying: I'm not interested in you... That kinda really closed all the doors and windows, Jay."
"I know! That's why I couldn't say anything... I don't know why I said that back then. I was in a bad mood, maybe? I don't know."
There are 3 conventions lined up for this month. 2 of those are held at the same time at different venues. Another hurdle. What if Y/N is at the other venue while Jay is at the other? Or if Y/N came in a costume? A mask?
Jay ordered another bottle. They both finished their drinks and decided to end the nigh. Tomorrow, Jay will try to find Y/N again.
-+-+-+-
Jay was debating about which convention to go check for Y/N. She thought if he were Y/N, where would he go? Knowing Y/N doesn't like crowded places but a convention is an exception.
Jay was holding the two flyers in his hands; looking at them over and over at them -until he read the name of the guests. He remembered Y/N say she idolizes that artist. Now Jay knows which one to go to.
Jay grabbed his coat. He knocked at Sergeant Voight's office.
"Hey, Sarge, just gonna step out a bit."
"Working on a lead?" -Voight
"Uh, no... gonna see about a girl."
"Oh..."
"It won't take long."
"It's fine, Jay. Go."
Jay said his thanks and headed out. Straight to the convention.
They were lots of people. Jay kept looking for Y/N. Reaching out to some, tapping their shoulders, and mistaking them.
"Sorry, wrong person." -Jay apologized to the latest one.
He walked towards the food booths, hoping to see if Y/N is eating there. He mistakes a few more girls before he decided to step out. He stood by the entrance. He was losing patience when he finally saw Y/N.
"Hey!" -Jay held her by the hands, making her turn and face him.
"J-Jay? Oh, hey." -Y/N was a little confused seeing Jay again.
"Y/N..." -Jay was feeling a lot of things. Joy, relief, and...
Jay gripped Y/N's wrist a little too tight and dragged her to his car.
"J-Jay, hey! That's a little tight-it hurts." _Y/N was trying to free her wrist from Jay.
Jay stopped just right at the side of his car, trapping Y/N between him and the car. "Y/N... How dare you?!?" Jay was feeling joy and relief for finding Y/N but he also felt angry.
"W-What?"
"How dare you leave?"
"Jay, you said-"
"You left. After taking me on a date. After making me like you, you left. I waited for you. Back at the gym. 2 weeks you never came back. I figured you transferred. But I kept looking for you. Every day. Out there."
"Wait, but you rejected me, Jay!"
"I waited for you at the gym, to talk to you!"
"I promise to not bother you after so I changed gyms. Jay, you rejected me. I was hurt! There is no way I'd be able to move on if I keep going to that gym. And also, it'll bother you, I don't want that."
"Well, I'm here now! telling you-" -Jay slowed down. He took a deep breath and calmed himself down. "When I went on that date with you, it was just out of respect for you surviving near death. I wasn't expecting anything. You aren't even my type. But, on that date, I had a great time. With you. I wanted to get to know you more. I wanted to keep going on dates with you but I couldn't."
Y/N was just staring at Jay. Couldn't believe what she's hearing.
"I couldn't because I rejected and made it pretty clear that I'm not interested in you. So it didn't feel right to ask you then. So I waited until the next gym day to see you and talk to you. But you never came."
"Jay-"
"I'm sorry. I rejected you before but I would really like a second date, Y/N."
"..." _Y/N was blushing and couldn't believe it. Her shooting her shot was worth it in the end. Yes! Of course! But you hurt me... I'll make you work for it really hard."
"I'm up for it."

Kim Burgess x fem. Reader
An undercover mission goes wrong but we’re does that leave Kim and Y/N’s relationship.

Part 1 —————> Part 2 Here
————
You tried to give Kim a reassuring smile as you had a wire attached by Mouse, she was standing in front of you giving you a hard stare, you knew that she didn’t want you to go under, but even she knew that there was really no other way. “Babe, I’ll be fine nothing bad is gonna happen.” You gave her a half smile as Mouse finished, going over to give her a tight hug. “I’ll let the team know you’re ready.” Mouse said awkwardly, interrupting their little moment and quickly leaving them in peace.
“I’ll be back in a couple of weeks, and you know it nothing will keep us apart and you know it.” You whispered to her, lightly kissing her ear. “I love you. Don’t you dare come back to me hurt or so help me-“ you kissed her short and sweet, cutting her off, “honey you have nothing to worry about, I love you.” She gave you a sad look, “I hope so, I love you too.” You both placed your foreheads against each other, silently sending each other all the love and support that the other needed, you just had to hope that every day you wouldn’t be coming home in a coffin.
Yours and Kim’s moment was interrupted by the rest of intelligence coming down to the garage, she stepped back, just giving you a sad look that made you feel incredibly guilty. You wished you could back out now, but the meet was organised, so no turning back. Turning to face Voight to get the complete run down and what information that they needed to put these guys away.
“Madison Hughes, Halstead’s C.I has gotten involved with this new gang that’s moved in to the south side has started dealing tampered Coke. The guy we need to get is Finnian Herring. He’s the highest up along with Jesse Nadir and Gus Walker…” you continued to listen knowing exactly what you would have to do just to get to them. You just knew how pissed off Kim was as Voight continued, you wanted to let her know it was okay. That you weren’t going to be alone through it. “Isn’t there another way? One that doesn’t involve Y/n getting into their pants.” Kim pointedly asked, staring at Voight. Their boss just stared back, “Burgess, L/n can handle herself, she doesn’t need you trying to play hero. And if you’re going to be this affected by the job, get out.”
You looked back at Kim, who looked torn between staying and leaving for fresh air, you smiled at her and she rubbed your arm.
———
You stood outside the nightclub that Madison had arranged the meet at, Jay was talking about some information that might be useful, but you weren’t listening. You just hoped that Kim would be alright, and praying the next time she saw you wouldn’t be at your funeral. You just wanted them to hurry up so you could get home to Kim as soon as possible. You already missed her touch and it had only been 45 minutes.
After another 5 minutes in the cold someone finally appeared, unfortunately not any of the people that they were after. You were led away silently praying that everything would go to plan and that no one would be hurt.
The nightclub was extremely busy and loud, you could see Adam and Hailey at the bar looking on and giving status updates to Voight and Jay on the other end. You kept following the guy up to the private room, where they all lost sight on you and you knew that apart from the com you where on your own. You held your breath going up the steps and into the small room that all your people where in, now just to catch them dealing, which would be easy based off the amount of girls there. The runner who never introduced himself took you to the three people that you needed. Now, hopefully this would be a quick in and out.
“Boss, this is the doll that Madison wanted you to meet,” they shooed him away and left you with just them, they brought you to another room. This whole place gave you the creeps along with the three men, you couldn’t help but feel a bit intimidated. You could see the Coke sitting on the table in front of you, “You’re a cute wee thing aren’t you? No wonder why Madison sent you, you look like everything I like in a woman, one of the men, Gus said. “And you are everything I look for in a man.” You flirted back, throwing up in your mouth a bit. You swallowed the bile in your throat, “I know how to expand your markets on this new Coke you have, I just want 15%.” Finnian, the main man raised an eyebrow, “and why would we need to expand our markets, we’re doing just fine.”
You rolled your eyes, “sure right now, but people will get over it and then you’ll be in the dust, I’ve got too many connections and known how to get it all through the city and out of state. I just want 15%.” You gave him a sweet smile. “I’ll give you the 15% if you let me see just exactly what this stuff does to you.” Your eyes widened slightly and you felt your throat starting to close over. Taking a deep breath you watched as Finnian started walking closer to you til he was at your neck, kissing and whispering in your ear, thankfully the one that didn’t have the wire in.
“Y/n you have your safe word.” Voight quietly reminded her. You said nothing as he circled you, “but then again, maybe you’re a spy…” you could feel yourself starting to panic, “A spy? What makes you say that?… and you do realise that its not very nice not to offer me a lovely glass of that red wine, especially since I love red wine.” There, now you could only hope that they heard the safe word and were in the way up.
You looked up at Finnian, and his eyes flashed a vicious colour as he reached for her wire, “she’s a rat, let’s get out.” The man reached for your hair as he roughly trailed you out a back exit.
Okay, you could officially start panicking, you tried to get out of the man’s grip but it was no use, as his hand shifted to hold your neck as you struggled. Fuck, this was not how it was meant to go, fucking Hell, Kim. You should have listened. You couldn’t bare the thought of worrying her, a face broke through your panic, “I swear if you don’t stop struggling I will put a bullet in your head and leave you somewhere you will never be found.” Finnian’s nose was right against yours as his grip around your throat tightened until you were spluttering and gasping for air. “Please.. I.. I” you could feel a prick in your upper arm and yourself getting drowsy before everything went black…
