As I wait for my beta to get back to me...
Okay I've never had a beta before and I love him but I'll never have a beta again bc i'm IMPATIENT but anyway I messed around with the sourceless incorrect quotes generator and I'm dying over here so. have these ig
including some things with peter as spider bc guess what! they'll also interact. yes i have three fucking fics planned
----
Jean: Where did you get that tomato soup? Peter: It’s actually a bowl of ketchup I just microwaved.
Peter: What goes up but never comes down? Jean: The amount of stress you're bringing me.
Jean, shooing Peter away: Can you go be depressed over there? You’re bumming out my whole area.
Peter: Ah, Hello again. We really need to stop meeting like this. Jean: Maybe we would, if you would sTOP ILLEGALLY ENTERING MY FUCKING CRIME SCENES!!!
Peter: So I can either do something dumb that could very well get me injured or I can listen to Jean and not do the thing, Peter: Well there’s a clear right answer here. Peter: *proceeds to throw five packs of mentos into a barrel full of diet coke*
Jean: So I have made the decision to trust you. Spider: A horrible decision, really.
Peter: I'm tired. Jean: You slept for three hours last night! Why are you surprised?! Peter: I'm not surprised. I just wanted to complain about it.
Jean: They don’t make them like me no more. I’m the last of my kind. Peter: Thank god.
Spider: And then they ran into my knife. They ran into my knife ten times. Jean: You mean you stabbed them? Spider: They ran into my knife.
Jean: Do you have any idea what you’re doing? Peter: Why start now?
Peter: I love hearing Jean shouting at someone else. It makes such a nice change.
Peter, getting a full nap with a warm blanket for the first time in literal years (i WILL make it happen): You know I think my life has value. Jean: Who are you and what have you done with Peter?!
Jean: You use humor to deflect your trauma. Spider: Awww, thanks- Jean: That’s not a good thing. Spider: All I’m hearing is that you think I’m funny.
Jean, to Peter: All right, let’s tell each other a secret about ourselves. I’m going to go first– I hate you.
Jean: Why are you on fire? Spider: This is just how my day is going.
Jean: I'll offer you some friendly advice- Peter: I don't want your advice. Jean: Well, then consider it unfriendly advice, dipshit.
Jean: I've met a lot of pricks in my time, but you, Parker, are a fucking cactus.
Jean: That’s illegal, right? Peter: Why do you care? Are you a fucking cop? Jean: Kinda- Peter: Just shut the fuck up.
Jean: I should've left you on that street corner where you were standing. Peter: But ya' didn't!
Jean: Don’t go picking a fight with me. I could make your life difficult. Peter, sarcastically: Wow. I wonder what it’d be like to have a difficult life.
Kidnapper: We have your child Jean: I don’t have a child? Kidnapper: Then who just told us to fuck off and that he doesn't have time for more stupid problems? Jean: Oh god, you have Peter
Jean: Who hurt you? Peter: *snorting* What, do you want a list? Jean: ...Yes, actually.
Spider: Something’s off. Jean: Maybe you’ve finally developed human emotions and feel bad for hurting people. Spider: No, but that’s funny.
Jean: Peter, no. Peter: Peter, yes.
Peter/Spider: Treat spiders the way you want to be treated. Jean: Killed without hesitation.
[that second part would work for either tho ngl but i can't NOT have pete say the first line]
Peter: I'm bored, any suggestions? Jean: Sleeping is nice. Peter: I acknowledge your suggestion, and I’m deciding to ignore it.
Spider: It’s nice to be wanted, you know? Jean: Not by the law!
Jean: I never tell people off the bat that I'm gay. I wait. I wait until they say some homophobic shit and then I laugh and am like "you know I'm gay right?" and watch the look of terror on their face. Peter: Peter: I like you.
[Jean if he was not living in the 30s were being gay could get him fired and killed :D]
Jean: You have an impressive pain tolerance. Peter: Thanks, it's the trauma.
Jean: Where have you been all day? Peter: Oh, just dealing with things way beyond my maturity level.
Peter: Jean, I sense hostility. Jean: Good, because I hate you.
Spider being an edgy bastard: I could kill you if I wanted. Jean: Yeah? So could any other human being. So could a dog. So could a dedicated duck. You aren't special.
Jean: You're alive. Peter: No need to sound so disappointed.
Peter: You read my diary? Jean: At first I did not know it was your diary. I thought it was a very sad handwritten book.
Jean: I can't imagine what Peter is planning. But I can tell you two things. We won't like it and it won't be legal.
Jean: Ayo, what the FUCK is this?!? Spider, sitting down, surrounded by corpses: I won Mafia, that’s what.
Jean: What are you doing here? Peter: I could ask you the same question. Jean: I work here. This is my crime scene. Peter: I should probably ask you a different question.
Jean: You saved me! Why? Spider: People would think I murdered you if I didn't.
Jean: Can you pass the salt? Peter: Can you pass away? Jean: Too much salt.

I do find it really interesting characterization-wise how, while quite many (masked) Hero-type characters in fiction are depicted as having very clear differences between their civillian and hero selves, Noir Peter (2009 comic run ver.) has a very distinct and very loud sort of personality that doesn't change all that much between him wearing and not wearing the mask. This ties back around to how much I consider his political/moral values key to his character, but its mainly just how outspoken he is.
Being Spiderman didn't make him more loud about his beliefs, or make him willing to stand up for them, as he was already doing that, so instead it moreso gave him the strength to back himself up when he does.
Afterall, his Great Power Great Responsibility speech predates the spiderbite. All that did was give him the tools necessary to try enacting change more effectively.

Some random spider noir information from the comics! I’ve specified where the movies might come in and fanon stuff!
Noir was raised to be and is a socialist activist.
Dude most likely has a 1920-30s NY Bowery accent.
His first run takes place in 1933, in ITSV he comes from 1933, his second run(EWAF)takes place 8 mo. after, so he’d be coming off EWAF to ATSV.
Age wise this makes him 17-20.
Noir has been spiderman for like 2 yrs at most by ATSV, he started in 1933 and is from 1933 in ITSV.
Was bitten by a mythical spider rather than a radioactive one(its a whole thing let’s not get into it).
His costume is/based on his Uncle’s WW1 fighter pilot outfit
He has a black cat named Ding Ding.
Has an ambiguously strained relationship with aunt May bc she’s against killing, he is not.
Yes, he kills Nazis.
Yes, his uncle was cannibalized, his ‘love’ interest had her face mutilated, and his best friend was lobotomized.
Had two paternal figures named ‘Ben’ who died lol.
One of the few spiders who are always strapped.
Has organic black webbing!
If I’m remembering this right unlike the other Peters he’s more interested in physics than bio.
In the comics he’s not as physically strong as the other spiders and carries around a small vile of venom for emergencies.
He lives/grew up in a Bowery welfare center with his Aunt and Mj(sometimes) but later gets his own office/apartment.
Recruited to Superiors death squad before working with the other spiders.
Has died at least once(confirmed), but implied multiple times, and was resurrected from another dimension by a spider god back to his own universe.
Fanon wise, most people call him some variation of Benjamin(while avoiding Ben lol) like Benj, Benji, B, etc. with various justifications but ultimately to more easily differentiate between the other Peters. Me personally, I think he takes on the name ‘Benjamin Urich’ but that’s a different post.
Noir does have canon love interests. He has had a romantic(mostly sexual) relationship with White Widow aka Felicia Hardy, but she was like 40 he was like 16/17 it’s weird and gross. He has also had a weird relationship with his MJ but it’s not super flushed out and he even says in the comics it’s strained, so most fanon views her as a sister figure.
Fanon wise, he is often shipped with his best friend Robbie Robertson(who dies very traumatically) or Jean DeWolfe, a federal agent, he’s seen working with. Recently, I’ve seen him shipped with a lot more characters, most notably Ham, Hobie, and Miguel.

Across the Spider Verse Thoughts
Across the spider verse was my most anticipated movie of 2023. I came in with sky high expectations and yet somehow the movie managed to surpass them.
By the end of the opening sequence across the spider verse had me sold that this was going to be one of my favorite spider-man movies and when the movie finished that belief held true. Spider-Man across the spider verse is easily one of my favorite superhero movie sequels of all time (I actually think it might be my favorite). The movie just came out and I’ve already seen it, what my brother has dubbed, “too many times” (Though I vehemently disagree with him on that point).
Tumblr media
It’s a movie sold on its scope and love for all of spider-man and his lore and yet it never loses its heart in the spectacle. It manages to be a fantastic middle chapter to what is quickly becoming one of my favorite film series of all time.
There’s a lot I want to talk about so I’m just going to get right into it.
Miles is a great protagonist
Tumblr media
Miles Morales is a character that I felt Into the Spider Verse really elevated. I had read all of the ultimate comics spider-man run that was his debut series and, while I liked Miles, he was never in the top tier of my favorite superheroes, but that quickly changed with Into the Spider Verse. They managed to explore his struggle and hesitance to accept the Spider-man mantle in a way that was far more compelling than his comic book counter part.
Across the Spider Verse takes the already really strong basis that Into the Spider Verse created for Miles and builds on it through a brilliant meta narrative on what it means to be spider-man and asking the question of whether or not Miles really is spider-man.
Tumblr media
Trauma is so ingrained into the creation and growth of spider-man as a character. Ask anyone to list what the most iconic moments in spider-man comics are and you are bound to get answers that include uncle ben’s death, the death of gwen stacy, the death of Jean DeWolfe, Captain Stacy’s death, etc.
There are a lot of moments of loss within the spider-man mythos that define the character and these moments are carried over into a lot of spider-man media outside of the comics. Miles’ rejection of this narrative and the necessity of loss to make a hero in this movie is what truly makes him become spider-man.
Tumblr media
The first movie had him accepting the mantle but this is where he truly grows into the role.
Outside of the mask Miles is a unique and three dimensional character as well.
Miles has a youthful charm and good heart that feels authentic to a high schooler that has yet to experience a lot of what life has to offer without falling into feeling like a middle schooler or a caricature of a teenager like MCU Peter Parker tends to do at certain points in his trilogy.
Tumblr media
I think this is displayed really well in his relationship with Gwen. There’s an innocence and inexperience there that shows that this is his (an her) first attempt at a real relationship but it never feels surface level because the movie does a great job at selling their bond and how they are similar in key ways that makes it so the understanding they find in one another feels natural.
This elevates the betrayal he feels when it’s revealed that Gwen and Peter B Parker knew everything Miguel reveals to him the whole time and it makes his goodbye to Gwen all the more impactful.
Another relationship I want to shed light on is the one Miles has with his parents.
Tumblr media
Miles’ bond with both his parents in this movie is phenomenal but the relationship that is really allowed to shine is the one between Miles and his mother, Rio.
I loved the expansion of Rio Morales’ role. In the first movie she was a memorable but underused character (understandably) and her relationship to Miles took a backseat to his relationship to his father. But here we get to see their unique bond and her attempts to understand him and learn to give him the space he needs to grow into his own person. It felt earned that she was the one he was going to reveal his identity to first before it was revealed that the Rio he told wasn’t from his universe.
Tumblr media
As it stands Miles’ arc isn’t complete, but what is shown and the place he is left in make for a strong set up for the finale of this three part story. I have complete faith that this trilogy will stick the landing and provide satisfying conclusions to the arcs and relationships that have been set up. Miles has really become one of the best iterations of the spider-man character and one of my favorites to hold the mantle. I can’t wait to see what they do with him in the next movie.
Gwen’s increased role
Tumblr media
One of my favorite changes from the first movie is the amount of emphasis put on Gwen and her arc.
I knew after Into the Spider Verse that if they were going to make a sequel Gwen would likely have a much bigger role considering the seeds they planted to have her connection to Miles grow and the fact that where she was on her journey as a spider-person had her in the perfect place to be a foil to him moving forward. It felt like a natural progression, but even knowing that and having read the Spider-Gwen comics, the way the movie utilized her was better than I ever could have hoped.
Across the Spider Verse took the potential for Gwen as a character and foil for Miles and ran with it by creating a duality in how their arcs compare to one another.
Tumblr media
The opening sequence very purposefully made her a dark parallel to Miles, a cautionary tale of what could go wrong if he unmasks himself to his parents and an extreme case of the isolation he could experience throughout his journey. But also just like Miles she’s very early on in her journey as Spider-woman. She’s not even out of high school so many of her canon events haven’t happened yet and, like she learns later on in the film, her story isn’t set in stone.
She’s on that same journey of self discovery and forging your own path that Miles is and having this contrast between them elevates both their arcs.
She’s not just an amazing foil for Miles. She’s also an excellent vehicle for the movie’s themes.
Across the spider verse is centered around themes of isolation, fate, the weight of life, and making your own path and, while Miles is undoubtedly the protagonist of the feature, Gwen is the one the movie tells a complete arc with surrounding these themes.
Tumblr media
Her loneliness was hinted at in the first movie but it’s put on full display here with the opening 20 minutes hammering home just how isolated she is in her world and how much the loss of Peter Parker and her role in his death has effected her.
Gwen lacks any sort of support system at the start of the movie. Even before the showdown with Vulture there’s a disconnect between her and her police captain father that stems from the fact that he’s leading the hunt for Spider-woman, her alter ego, because he believes she killed Peter. She struggles to open up to anyone else and make friends in her world because of her life as spider-woman and how intrinsically tied it is to her issues. And she’s lost the only people she feels could understand her with no way that she knows of to see them (particularly Miles) again.
Tumblr media
The opening culminates with Gwen losing the last person she has left in her own world when her father tries to arrest her after she unmasks herself to him and she flees her world to join Miguel’s spider society.
This all sets up a very powerful arc dealing with her loneliness and struggles with doing the right thing in the face of her fear of rejection and loss where she finally really opens up to other people and “starts her own band” to stand against Miguel O’Hara through her connection with Miles and desire to help him as well as her reconciliation with her father.
Tumblr media
This movie asks questions about whether or not trauma and loss are necessary to make you spider-man so it’s significant that it is instead through healing from parts of her trauma, reconnecting with her father, and making genuine connections that Gwen is able to grow as a hero. It says a lot about what this movie believes makes someone “spider-man”.
Another moment in Gwen’s arc that exemplifies what the movie believes makes a hero is actually Gwen’s reconciliation with her father where he reveals he quit the force. That moment proves that Miguel’s belief is wrong and that breaking the canon isn’t the end of the multiverse as they know it. This coupled with the fact that it’s Gwen’s speech about her desire to do what’s right and protect those she loves that gets her father to quit tells you everything this movie is trying to say about heroism. It’s not the loss and trauma that makes you spider-man but the character of the person behind the mask.
The opening also does a great job of establishing just how much Miles impacted Gwen in the first movie. He broke through this wall of isolation she put around herself and for the first time in a long while she found a genuine connection with someone who could understand and know all of her. It sells you immediately on how much this bond means to her and makes her conflict moving forward really compelling.
This relationship is a linchpin in the narrative of this film so if it didn’t work then the impact the movie’s story and themes would have been severely hampered.
Tumblr media
If I’m being honest Gwen’s arc is where the movie hit me the hardest. I think everyone has dealt with loneliness and that feeling of isolation that can come from being different and/or grief. There’s always that underlying desire for understanding and community that many people fear they’ll never have and seeing that portrayed in Gwen hit for me.
It’s the kind of desire I know I feared I would never get, but when I left home and went out on my own I was finally able to find people who understood me and accepted my idiosyncrasies in a way no one ever had before. And I always get emotional when I see that same isolation I felt portrayed in such a raw way and when those characters I see it in finally find the connection they need.
It’s also this isolation that goes a long way to explain why so many spider-people would join Miguel’s task force and go along with his plans. There’s a sense of community where all these people who have lost so much can find other people who understand them. That understand their unique form of grief, loss, and isolation that they struggle to find anywhere else because of the path they chose to take with their life. And won’t reject the half of them they are usually forced to hide from those they care about. Without showing this through Gwen’s perspective the last act of the film could have felt forced.
Gwen is a strong character that really grew into her role as the deuteragonist of the film and the role of spider-woman and serves to strengthen the themes of the film. She’s a great character that has so much potential moving forward and I look forward to her role and eventual reunion with Miles in Beyond the Spider Verse.
The animation
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that spider verse changed the animation industry after it came out. Before spider verse many animated movies had started to feel like they fell into a very similar style that focused on realism above all else and in many ways I felt didn’t fully capitalize on what animation could do as a medium (there were exceptions but a lot of studios were starting to lean on the Disney/Pixar animation style). But now there are shows and movies that are taking a page out of spider verse’s book and experimenting. Studios are less afraid to let their animators get creative and it’s been incredible to see.
Across the Spider Verse continues to push the envelope and goes beyond what they did with the first one to create one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
The way they experimented with the animation in different dimensions to bring comic book art styles to life (Gwen’s universe) and further accentuate the character and culture they are centered around (Hobie and Pavitr’s universes) really served to elevate the story, heighten the emotions of every scene, and make this truly feel like a multiversal epic.
One of my favorite visual flares in the movie is how color is used in Gwen’s universe. In the opening it really plays up the stark divide she feels between her and everyone else. She feels like she’s completely separate from the world around her through the very deliberate contrast in coloring and the way the background bleeds and morphs around her. She’s frequently portrayed in shades of blue while the world around her is full of vibrant pinks, oranges, and white.
I also love how the paint like aesthetic of her world’s backgrounds are used to heighten the emotions of scenes like the talks she has with her father. The background bleeds and the colors morph to reflect the emotions of the characters talking. When Gwen is desperately trying to reach out to her father in the beginning after she unmasks herself and at the end when she admits how powerless she feels to protect those she cares about the background starts to run and the colors bleed together and it captures how her world is falling apart and her path forward is no longer clear.
Tumblr media
I also want to point out how the lighting is one of the major hints that Miles isn’t on earth-1610. The lighting of every scene from the moment Miles is sent to earth-42 is some shade of purple or green which immediately gives the world a different feel than Miles’. It’s not so noticeable at first that it gives away the twist but it’s enough that it gives you an uneasy feeling the first time through and it’s details like these that elevate the reveal on rewatch.
This level of care and attention to detail permeates every frame of the film. There isn’t a single second of this movie that is wasted and it really uses the medium of animation to its fullest potential.
I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in Beyond the Spider Verse. If it’s anything like this then it will be amazing.
conclusion
Tumblr media
Spider-man is far and away my favorite hero. I’ve read many of his comic book runs, I own all his movies and video games, I’ve seen all his shows, etc. I’m the massive fan that probably understood way too many obscure references that this movie made and I loved every second of the movie I got to see.
I had so much fun with this movie and I hope everyone who watched the movie managed to get some enjoyment out of it. I can’t wait for Beyond the Spider Verse to come out and to finally get to see the conclusion to this animated trilogy.
side note
Spider-man is a character that is able to speak to a wide range of people because of the struggles he faces. Having a movie that understands the diversity of the people who relate to the character and reflect that on screen through the many (canonical) spider-people portrayed is amazing.
I love that so many people will get to see someone like them being the hero they admire. Stan Lee himself said that anyone can wear the spider-man mask. He wanted people to be able to see themselves in the heroes he created which was the basis of spider-man (and the x-men but that’s another story). And that’s something that I will always love about the character.

I love felicia. Why is she written like that. How is she so badly and well written simultaneously. I hate it. I hate her. Its bad. Its good. Why did they make her sleep with noir. Why is she reduced to an object. She's so much more than this and I know it. She's more than her relationships with men. But also they're so vital to her in ways no one understands. I'm crazy about her.
felica is unknowable. she is an enigma but ive been itching to talk about her.
There's a lot about her that I do really like! She has great bones for a complex character and if there was more source material I feel like she could have had more time to be understood and explored.
I really really wish that there was another woman present she could have riffed with. Spider noir is a man-fest which makes her really man-centric because thats all she's got to work with. Its a huge disservice! I do understand that nightclub life and working with powerful NY politicians and criminals will lend itself towards men, but come on now. Easy spot to throw Gwen into (fanfics love to do it lol), or even swapping the gender of someone else like they did with Jean DeWolfe.
I love that she runs a speakeasy which lets her get right in the middle of soo much information. And historically this can pull really well from 1920s hostesses.
In fact, one of the most highly developed skills of nightclub hostesses in New York was their ability to fleece unsuspecting customers. Trained by their bosses "to get as much information as possible from prospective suckers regarding their bank accounts and business," hostesses come on to male patrons with the express goal of "mounting the check." "After enough money is spent," one hostess recounted [...], the goal is to get "the sucker drunk and the works [will] follow." (Dry Manhattan)
[at high end speakeasies] these hostesses earned tips and commissions on the checks they mounted, often as much as one-third of the total, which could bring them from $150 to $400 a week. (Dry Manhattan)
And this was during a time when the average yearly income was $3,269.40. I could totally see her finding her way like that in the early 20s before opening up a place for herself w/ all that money. The only shitty part is it makes her an accessory to men, plus w most of the story being told from Peter's POV we aren't privy to her thoughts. I think because she's basically the only woman with agency that her narrative relationship with men is so bad tasting.
Her character has so much beneath the surface. She knows everything about everyone!! and we never get to see it because she's jaded and secretive and doesn't trust anyone like that, especially not a dumbass teenager with a death wish.
AND HER RELATIONSHIP WITH PETER. don't even get me started. 1) WHY? They didn't have to go there. I know I know its a noir trope. As per the BBC the first rule of Film Noir is "A Dame With a Past and a Hero With No Future." And the Spiderman Noir team committed to it. If only they didn't commit so hard to Felica making multiple comments about how much of a kid Peter was after she was introduced as his mentor's ex. There has to be at least like 15yrs of an age difference between them.
but theres also the flip side that the noirverse is obviously fucked. Media doesn't have to be 100% moral and whatnot (especially in a noir setting), but it doesn't mean i have to root for pete and felica as a romantic couple LMFAO. Ive seen people rewrite their relationship as the strangest, oddest, most fucked up dysfunctional family and you know what i'll take that.
even having that aspect of her character being something where its telling of her past/present, where she doesn't know how to separate pete, a (frankly) dangerous person she needs to keep tabs on and know his secrets, from everyone else she works with. She's been so deeply enveloped by her need to keep herself one step ahead, to have physical power over another in any way (the only way) she knows how, that this is the means she resorts to. but of course we dont know any of that because they didn't bother delving into her more. it does make for a dimensional character at the very least. now if only she wasn't the only main woman.. so that character arc doesn't seem so sexist. and if only pete wasnt so fucking young my gooodddd. but thats what we're working with. such is life

Diving into The Abyss arc of Donny Cates' Venom!
I'm currently marathoning Donny Cates' Venom run in the "Venomnibus by Cates & Stegman" that I got as a birthday present this year. I re-read "The Abyss" arc published in Venom (2018) #9-12 just a few nights ago (which was the last arc from the run that I originally read back in 2019), and holy FREAKING crap... I had honestly forgotten just how effectively heavy and powerful this arc truly was!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I first read this storyline back in 2019, it completely blew me away with its sheer amount of shocking twists and revelations, ranging from the backstory of a teenage Eddie Brock being involved in a drunk driving accident in which he ran over and killed a kid, but ultimately got off despite wanting to plead guilty due to Eddie's abusive father Carl Brock violently forcing him to plead innocent, to the revelation that his older sister Mary Brock and past experiences with cancer were actually false memories implanted by the symbiote in order to manipulate Eddie into staying with it, to the fact that he has a son named Dylan Brock who was accidentally conceived during that brief time his ex-wife Anne Weying bonded with Eddie's symbiote and briefly became "She-Venom" during the 90s miniseries Venom: Sinner Takes All.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But re-reading the story now I can look back and greatly appreciate the sheer amount of craft that's on display with Cates' writing in this arc, since he carefully foreshadows all of these plot twists all throughout the arc through subtle hints and double-meanings in the character's dialogue. Aside from the brilliant narrative subversion of fooling the reader into initially believing that Eddie is the kid who's run-over in the flashbacks before pulling to rug to reveal that in actuality Eddie was the one behind the wheel, the twist that Eddie's sister was simply a false memory was expertly foreshadowed through both Carl & Dylan being absolutely confused whenever Eddie mentioned the name "Mary."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another that I really love about the drunk-driving backstory is how it not only recontextualizes Eddie’s motivations as both an anti-hero and as a supervillain. In regards to his anti-hero persona, Eddie's constant proclamations about wanting to "protect the innocent" were rather ill-defined back when the character received over a dozen miniseries' during the 90s. But here Cates' emphasizes how Eddie's guilt over accidentally killing a kid and being let off due to being manipulated by his abusive father has made him want to try to protect "real innocents" from people like himself. but also during his time as a villain pursuing Spider-Man. As for how this backstory recontextualizes Eddie's tenure as a Spider-Man villain, during in the original David Micheline era in which Venom first debuted, Eddie’s hatred for Spidey was connected to the classic Death of Jean DeWolfe storyline, wherein Eddie wrote a series of interviews for the Daily Globe with a man he believed to be the notorious serial killer, “the Sin Eater,” whilst hiding the killer’s true identity under the guise of “first amendment rights and protecting his journalistic source.” But Eddie was eventually forced to reveal his source’s identity due to mounting police pressure and the Sin Eater’s rising body-count, which led to Eddie outing the Sin Eater as Emil Gregg. But literally 30-minutes later it was revealed that Gregg was just a copycat, as Spidey caught the real Sin Eater who turned out to be policeman Stan Carter, which led to Eddie being fired and refusing to take responsibility for his own failures by projecting the blame onto Spider-Man. Additionally, the Micheline's Venom: Lethal Protector & Zeb Wells' Venom: Dark Origin miniseries highlighted how Eddie’s relationship with his estranged father partially influenced his writing of the Sin Eater interviews in an effort to bolster his reputation, but following his firing permanently destroyed any chances of reconciliation with Carl Brock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in those classic stories Eddie constantly proclaimed that he was “once an innocent whose life Spider-Man ruined,” even though his actions as a journalist were incredibly morally dubious and unethical. So the drunk driving backstory of Eddie being violently forced to plead innocent by his father and ultimately getting off? That only further fleshes out Eddie’s inability to accept responsibility and false projection of “innocence” onto himself during his villainous phase in those original stories, while also showing how much Eddie has grown since then by acknowledging that he’s not a “real innocent.”

Plus, there's also a strong thematic through-line in this arc about the nature of abusive relationships in the form of Eddie's co-dependent bond with the Venom Symbiote plus Carl's abusive behavior towards Eddie in the past & Dylan in the present day. Additionally, Cates also touches upon ideas of self-improvement and redemption, not only through the backstory of Eddie's motivation to "protect the innocent," but also through the story ending with Eddie deciding to raise Dylan himself after helping him escape Carl's influence, as well as the Venom symbiote willingly leaving Eddie & Dylan after the former denounces the symbiote's manipulative behavior, with the symbiote proclaiming that it's, "Trying... to... be... better... both... of... you... better... without... me..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It shows that the key difference between Carl and both Eddie & the symbiote is that Venom at least acknowledges his past monstrous behavior and makes efforts to change unlike his coward of a father, thereby simultaneously allowing Eddie to overcome the demons of his past with his abusive father, as well as making the symbiote's later reunion with Eddie in Absolute Carnage more believable!
Tumblr media
Like... hot dang! There's a reason why "The Abyss" arc in particular left such a lasting impression on me when I initially read the first 12-issues of Donny Cates' Venom series a few years ago! Not only does it still hold up phenomenally well from both a narrative and thematic standpoint, but it's gotten me even more excited to dive into the rest of Cates' Venom run and the corresponding Absolute Carnage and King In Black events, which will be my first time ever reading those stories!
However, I do have some thoughts regarding two minor points of contention about Cates' run as a whole and "The Abyss" arc in particular that I've encountered from toxic fandom spaces here on Tumblr that I also wanted to address, which I'll link to right here:

Showbiz Pizza Magic Night (1984), Segment 8: "Michael Jackson Intro/Michael Jackson Tribute" Transcript
NOTE: THIS TRANSCRIPT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION! I found a live performance that shows some of the line distribution in the medley was wrong in my original post. I don’t have the chance to fix it right now, but I’ll do it as soon as I can!
Note: Here's the eighth and final segment of Magic Night! This one includes the well-known Michael Jackson Intro skit, along with the first of the Rock-afire Explosion's Michael Jackson medleys. If you want to check out the rest of the Magic Night transcripts, you can find links to them all at the bottom of the script, as well as footnotes.
As always, if you find any errors, please let me know and I'll fix it as soon as possible!

BILLY BOB: Well, howdy, everybody. I’m Billy Bob, and we’re back with another big show. But before we get on with it, I wanted to tell y’all something really interesting! It interests me, anyway. The other night, I was over at Disney World, I was vacationing, you know, had a couple days off and I was at Disney, and I was at the Country Bear Jamboree, and I was up there on stage gigging and jamming and playing with all them other bears and lo and behold, who was in the audience but Michael Jackson of all people!
MITZI: Wait a minute, wait a minute!
BILLY BOB: Yeah! And we got him up on stage-
MITZI: You saw Michael Jackson?
BILLY BOB: - and we were dancing and singing all his songs and having a good ol' time, right there at Disney World! He must have been va-
MITZI: You saw Michael Jackson!?
BILLY BOB: Yeah! And we did Billie Jean-
MITZI: You mean the Michael Jackson!?
BILLY BOB: The Michael Jackson! It was so great, and he did some songs from his album Thriller-
MITZI: No! No, you couldn’t have done that to me! You mean, you saw him and I didn’t get to!?
BILLY BOB: Well, Mitzi, we invited you to come with us to Disney.
MITZI: Well… I had cheerleading practice!
BILLY BOB: I know. Well, maybe another time. But it was so much fun-
MITZI: I’ll never get to see him again and y’all got to see him!
BILLY BOB: Well-
MITZI: It’s not fair.
BILLY BOB: Well-
MITZI: Michael Jackson’s my favorite thing, I love him!
BILLY BOB: I’m sorry, Mitzi.
MITZI: Well. Did you get his autograph?
BILLY BOB: Gah, you know, we were so excited… I don’t know, we forgot.
MITZI: You didn’t get his autograph for me!?
BILLY BOB: No, no, I’m sorry.
MITZI: You’re so thoughtless!
BILLY BOB: I’m sorry. Um.
MITZI: If I was there, I would’ve gotten 400 autographs! If I was there and y’all weren’t there, I would’ve gotten autographs for y’all, too!
BILLY BOB: Well, gee, that’d be nice, Mitzi-
ROLFE: Hey! Autographs, autographs, that’s all I ever hear! “Rolfe, would you please give me your autograph?” Every time I go out in public, people beg me for my autographs. But you know what? I don’t give it to them. I get hounded so much, I’m just sick and tired of it. So, uh, no autographs and that’s all! So, the answer is no. No! I will not give you my autograph, Mitzi. I’m sorry, you’ll have to get-
EARL: Rolfe, Rolfe, Rolfe! They are not talking about you. They do not want your autograph, and neither does anybody else. Would somebody please close the curtains on this nerd? I can’t even stand to look at him.
BEACH BEAR: Wonderful idea, there. Mitzi.
(There’s an uncomfortable pause.)
MITZI: … What?
BEACH BEAR: People like Michael Jackson, they get accosted for autographs all the time. Now, he was out at Disney World trying to have a good time. If you had been there, trying to get 400 autographs, you would have ruined his day. Do you understand?
MITZI: Yeah. I understand.
BEACH BEAR: Good. Now, what are you gonna do if you see Michael Jackson?
MITZI (Sudden, explosive.): I’m gonna rip his shirt off!! I’m gonna get a clump of his hair!! I’m gonna tear off his shoes!! I’ll do ANYTHING just to make up for this time when I didn’t get his autograph!!
(A beat of stunned silence.)
BEACH BEAR: … Alright. I can understand that. But for now, uh, I think we should pay musical tribute to the man by butchering one of his songs.
[SONG: MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE/MEDLEY]
NO. 1: BILLIE JEAN
BEACH BEAR: But we really like you, Michael, so we’re gonna do it to a whole medley.
DOOK:
SHE TOLD ME HER NAME WAS BILLIE JEAN, AS SHE CAUSED A SCENE
THEN EVERY HEAD TURNED WITH EYES THAT DREAMED OF BEING THE ONE
DOOK & BEACH BEAR:
WHO WILL DANCE ON THE FLOOR IN THE ROUND
DOOK:
PEOPLE ALWAYS TOLD ME, TO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DO
“DON’T GO AROUND BREAKING YOUNG GIRLS’ HEARTS”
AND MY MOTHER ALWAYS TOLD ME TO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LOVE
“BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU DO
BECAUSE THE LIE BECOMES THE TRUTH”
HEY, HEY, HEY
DOOK, BEACH BEAR, MITZI, & BILLY BOB:
BILLIE JEAN IS NOT MY LOVER
SHE’S JUST A GIRL WHO CLAIMS THAT
DOOK, BEACH BEAR, MITZI:
I AM THE ONE
DOOK, BEACH BEAR, MITZI, & BILLY BOB:
BUT THE KID IS NOT MY SON
DOOK, BEACH BEAR, MITZI:
SHE SAYS I AM THE ONE
DOOK, BEACH BEAR, MITZI, & BILLY BOB:

BILLY BOB: Hey, has anyone seen Michael’s new video?
FATZ: Are you kidding?

NO. 3: WANNA BE STARTIN’ SOMETHING (INSTRUMENTAL)
SUN & MOON*:
MA, MA, SE
MA, MA, SA
MA, MA, COO, SA
BILLY BOB: Hey, what about that video Thriller? Has everybody seen it?
(Sounds of affirmation come from center stage.)
FATZ: Yeah, I saw it.
BILLY BOB: Yeah? What’cha think?
FATZ: It scared me to death! I had to watch it with one eye closed. I’m under my bed.
(Everyone laughs.)
BEACH BEAR: You know, I thought- I think it sets precedence for a contemporary musical demographic. I think it adds sort of an anti-pseudo-expressionism in it.
FATZ: Yeah.
BILLY BOB: What’s that mean?
BEACH BEAR: It means it’s- it’s now. It’s wow.
FATZ: Yeah. With a marketed propensity towards obesity and sloth.
BEACH BEAR: Right.
DOOK (Imitating the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz): “I do believe in spooks! I do, I do, I do, I do believe in spooks!”
(They laugh.)
BILLY BOB: Hey, Looney Bird, how ‘bout you? What’d you think of it?
LOONEY BIRD: I didn’t see it.
BILLY BOB: How come, Looney Bird? Everybody’s seen it.
LOONEY BIRD: It’s on MTV, right?
BILLY BOB: Right.
LOONEY BIRD: Well, every time I turn on MTV, all I see is John Cougar Mellencamp. So, I turn it off. There’s better stuff on my police scanner.
BILLY BOB: Hey, does anybody remember any of Michael’s old songs?
(Everyone agrees that they do.)
NO. 4: THE LOVE YOU SAVE (ORIGINALLY BY THE JACKSON 5)
ALL**:
DO, DO
DO, DO, DO, DO
DO, DO, DO, DO
DO, DO, DO, DO
DO, DO
DO, DO, DO, DO

MITZI:
WHEN WE PLAYED TAG IN GRADE SCHOOL
YOU WANTED TO BE IT
BUT CHASING GIRLS WAS JUST A FAD
YOU CROSSED YOUR HEART YOU’D QUIT
WHEN WE GREW UP YOU TRADED
YOUR PROMISE FOR MY RING
NOW JUST LIKE BACK IN GRADE SCHOOL
YOU’RE DOING THE SAME OLD THING
STOP, THE LOVE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN
DARLING, TAKE IT SLOW
OR SOMEDAY YOU’LL BE ALL ALONE
YOU’D BETTER STOP, THE LOVE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN
DARLING, LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS ME
YOU’RE HEADED FOR THE DANGER ZONE
Sit down, boy! I think I love you! Now, wait a minute, boy! Get up! Show me what you can do!
ROLFE: Okay! Lucky day, lucky day! I’ve reconsidered. I’m going to sign some autographs after all! But a limited number only, of course. Ten autographs. The first ten people to get lined up right here- the line forms to the right- are gonna get autographs. No! Twenty autographs! That’s it! Lucky day! I’m in such a good mood!
(He laughs.)
EARL: Rolfe!
DOOK: Hey, Rolfe, we’re trying to do a show here about Michael Jackson. Why would anybody want your autograph?
ROLFE: Hey, hey, um. Uh. I am Michael’s inspiration, you know.
(Everyone protests.)
FATZ: Wait, wait, wait, y’all, chill out, chill out. Rolfe’s right. Here’s a song he had to inspire.

Yuri Watanabe and her role as Spider-Man's ally on the police force aren't something made up for the PS4 game, though? She's pretty much lifted directly from the comics, where Spider-Man has a long history of working with and being friendly with cops who don't buy into Jameson's nonsense (George Stacy, Jean DeWolf, etc). You could argue that they shouldn't have adapted that history into the game, but it's certainly not something the game's writers made up to make him more Batman-like.
They didn't make it up but they were definitely inspired by the Arkham games, that much is obvious after they also put in the stealth sequence Predator sections from Arkham as well as the targeting system for Batman's grappling hook lmao

concept: jean starts bringing peppermint around everywhere (and occasionally spreads it around a room he's in) bc he read that spiders hate mint. everyone else is wondering how the heck he got peter to mostly stay away and disappear relatively fast again
addition i just thought of: one of the agents or someone is at least a bit superstitious and is now convinced that peter is a demon of sorts

Marvel Team-Up (vol. 1) #48: A Fine Night for Dying!
Read Date: February 25, 2023 Cover Date: August 1976 ● Writer: Bill Mantlo ● Penciler: Sal Buscema ● Inker: Mike Esposito ● Colorist: Janice Cohen ● Letterer: Jean Hipp ● Editor: Marv Wolfman ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● Spidey is falling through the air, which wouldn't normally be a problem except his web-shooters aren't currently working. oops. ● he's taking his imminent death very calmly ● Iron Man to the rescue! (I can't help but to hear Robert Downey Jr's voice as Tony Stark) ● heheh, Spider-Man makes a bad pun, and Iron Man laments that he should have just let him drop. As someone who likes to make bad puns, I can appreciate this interaction ^_^ ● despite the saves, we have some pre-team-up bickering ● Captain Jean DeWolff. I think I like her. ● yuss, I love the captain's car!
Tumblr media
● now "DeWolf" is spelled with one f… ● back to "DeWolff" in the next panel, so "DeWolf" was just a momentary flub ● this is quite a little mystery developing here! and the images of the shadowy figure in the background of surveillance and/or news clips is rather creepy ● done already? that flew by! ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Spider-Man is web swinging over Long Island near a Stark International Fuel depot. He suddenly spots a model airplane with a bomb attached it heading toward the depot. The power of the blast sends Spider-Man flying backward. Although he is thrown clear of the heat and flames, he is left in free fall and would have fatally struck the ground if it was not for the timely arrival of Iron Man, who saves him. On the ground, Spider-Man is worried about the innocent people that might be endangered by the blast. However, Iron Man explains that he had the area evacuated and the fire department is at the ready as this attack as Tony Stark received a warning this was going to happen. Iron Man demands to know why Spider-Man was in the area. This infuriates the wall-crawler who doesn't like being accused of a crime he didn't commit. Iron Man admits that while Spider-Man has helped the Avengers in the past, they don't know much about them. Spider-Man points out that his motives are questionable, to ask the Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Moondragon about who he is. Their argument is interrupted by Captain Jean DeWolff, who has been investigating a series of threats that have been made to wealthy businesses, this being the fifth. While DeWolff and Iron Man compare notes, Spider-Man attempts to examine the remains of the model airplane used in the attack. Before he can, his spider-sense begins to tingle. Realizing it was booby-trapped, Spider-Man leaps away and pulls Jean to safety. This fits the pattern of the other attacks. Jean asks the two heroes if they can put aside their differences long enough to help out with the case. As the three continue to discuss matters, they neglect to notice a strange figure enter one the mausoleums in order to return to his secret lair. Meanwhile, Jean DeWolff rushes Spider-Man and Iron Man to her precinct. The pair witness as one of her officers makes light of the fact that Jean's father was the ex-commissioner of police and that they have to look out for her. Unimpressed, Jean bumps the desk Sargent back down to a patrolman. In her office, DeWolff explains to her allies that she needs to run a tight ship to keep out of being under her father's shadow. Activating some video equipment loaned to her department by SHIELD to review the five previous attacks. The first was on the Westchester Mansion of Max Vorster, a wealthy New York City slum lord. Volster was killed in the explosion and all evidence was destroyed. The only clue to the identity of their bomber is from a shadowy figure wearing a hood that was captured on video by the local news crew. The next bomb attack was at the Cosmopolitan Bank and Trust, an explosion that killed fifteen people and injured another twenty-two. This time their mystery attacker was caught on security cameras. After they have finished reviewing the footage, they examine the warning letters and discover that they are written on police letterhead, and the letters that form the messages are clipped out of the Gazette, a police newspaper. Suddenly, the masked figure they have been investigating hurls a model plane bomb from the building across the street. Spider-Man's spider-sense tips them off, and while Iron Man deals with the bomb, Spider-Man goes after the bomber. Much to the wall-crawler's surprise, their foe, a masked being calling himself the Wraith, is able to grab Spider-Man's wrists and crush them under great strength.
