Jensen Ackles knew Amazon's “The Boys” was a wild and crazy superhero show before he signed on, and the buff actor’s onscreen entrance – mostly in the buff – threw him in the deep end on his first day.
Ackles’ character, Soldier Boy, emerges from a large metal capsule after several decades in storage and “in true ‘Boys’ fashion, they don't keep their superheroes contained with clothing on. Why would they do that?” Ackles says. “So I stepped out in front of my brand new cast and crew with nothing between me and them but a sock.”
After 15 seasons of “Supernatural,” Ackles goes from battling demons to wielding a star-spangled shield in the third go-round of “The Boys” (first three episodes streaming Friday, then weekly ). His Soldier Boy is a macho 1980s-style superhero in the vein of Captain America – although not nearly as nice a guy – and a hugely popular American celebrity who's long been thought dead. Now he's sought by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) in their efforts to take down psychopathic super man Homelander (Antony Starr).
Question: Your “Boys” introduction was sans clothing, but what was it like filming a superhero orgy scene where you’re in your spiffy suit surrounded by a bunch of naked extras?
Jensen Ackles: I’m not necessarily a modest person, by any means, but I do remember walking onto the set,  and let's just say that I felt the need to stare at the ceiling more than I've ever felt in my life. Avoid eye contact, just don't look down and you might get through this day.
Q: Was that an interesting exercise going from Dean Winchester to Soldier Boy?
Ackles: Dean was the unlikely hero in flannel that you would walk by a million times on the street and never know. He was fighting the good fight in the shadows, whereas Soldier Boy, he pretends to fight the good fight in the spotlight. Much like Homelander, this is a guy who believes his own hype and battles with his insecurities and internal demons, and doesn't do it very well. We're dealing with a lot of toxic masculinity,  and Soldier Boy definitely gets to embody that.
Q: Why is that an important issue to discuss now?
Ackles: We teach girls all the time (that) it's OK to be tough and it's OK to stand up for yourself, and you can do everything a boy can do. But it is not the same on the flip side. Princess dresses are not for boys, painting your nails is not for boys, playing with dolls is not for boys. The discouragement just because of what has been handed down generation after generation is something that we should peel the layers back and understand maybe on a deeper level where's that coming from, and why are we still holding on to that as a society.
Q: You're joining Reba McEntire as new series regulars on "Big Sky." Is there a duet in your future?
Ackles: (Laughs) If Reba McEntire wants to make me sing with her, I'm a big enough country fan to do everything I can to not let her down. She's an icon, she's legendary, she's country music royalty.
Q: What tune would you pick to sing?
Ackles: Oh, man. I would just do anything I could to get her to sing “Fancy.”
Q: What is it about “Supernatural” that keeps you coming back?
Ackles: It's a world that's always interested me. There's obviously been several attempts at a spinoff for the show, because I do think that there is a strong desire to continue to expand this universe. Any time you've got a fan base and even a cast of characters like this that have really put so much time and effort into building this world, you want to see other parts of it – at least I do. Look, I wasn't ready for “Supernatural” to die. I just needed a break. (Laughs) I wasn't ready for it to necessarily be done done. I just needed to go stick my toes in the sand for a minute.
Q: Do you have big Father's Day plans now that you're back home in Austin?
Ackles: No, my Father's Day plans are pretty much whatever (my family is) going to do for me. I'm on board with that. I'm not the planner in my family. My wife is the commander in chief, and she lets us know where this ship goes. I just wait for my marching orders.
Q: So, you’re a Soldier Boy through and through?
Ackles: That's it, my friend.

'Justice League: Warworld' Gets Brutal Blood-Thirsty Rating
The live-action DC universe has been in a transition period as fans wait for The Flash and James Gunn’s grand vision for the DCU to come to fruition. However, over the last decade, what has united many comic book readers has been DC’s animated universe of films. Now the latest film in the line, Justice League: Warworld, has been given an R-rating.
The edgy rating is pretty straightforward with the only reason given being “some bloody violence.” The animated DCU has loved getting its hands dirty for a while now as Warworld is the 13th R-rated animated film for the brand. This includes Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, Justice League Dark, and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. This is also the second R-rated film in the “Tomorrowverse” continuity that was started with 2020’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow — with Batman: The Long Halloween - Part 2 being the other film. While it’s hard to expect Warworld to get any bloodier than Apokolips War which was DC’s own messed-up Avengers: Endgame-style story, the source material definitely has the potential to warrant such a rating.
What’s Justice League: Warworld About?
The story of Warworld will see the Justice League in a classic comic scenario of being kidnapped and transported to the brutal title planet that's known for its gladiatorial combat. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman must unite to form a resistance and lead the entire planet to freedom. This was something that was teased in the post-credit scene in the last film Legion of Super-Heroes. While this film’s not based on any specific DC storyline, Warworld, and the dreaded Mongal are major cornerstones in the universe. Outside the comics, the planet has appeared in many TV shows, movies, and games including the iconic Justice League animated series. Also, given that this is centered around Warworld, DC fans should expect our favorite heroes to be forced to fight each other at some point in the film.
When Will Justice League: Warworld Be Released?
There’s no confirmed release date for Justice League: Warworld yet, but the film is expected to debut sometime this summer. It’s safe to assume the movie will arrive around San Diego Comic-Con which takes place at the end of July. Warworld will star Jensen Ackles, Stana Katic, Darren Criss, Ike Amadi, Troy Baker, Matt Bomer, and Frank Grillo. You can read about the full cast listing here. The film was directed by Legion of Super-Heroes’ Jeff Wamester from a screenplay by Supernatural’s Jeremy Adams. While DC fans wait for more information about Warworld’s bloody antics, you can view the trailer for Legion of Super-Heroes down below.

“So I started to kind of dive into just reading accounts of other people’s PTSD, whether it was from trauma, from an accident, or whether it was war related, or whether it was child abuse related. And, it seems so specific and so tailored to that individual, that I felt like, I would just be mirroring somebody else’s PTSD, if I kind of read into it too much. So I backed away from diving too deep into that research and just kind of read and had conversations with Kripke. Read the backstory on Soldier Boy, obviously, knowing where he was coming from knowing what he had gone through. You know, he’s somebody who deals with things much differently than someone in today’s society. And it wasn’t something that existed in his era. It wasn’t something that they talked about in his era. So he just muscled up and just dealt with it. That was something that I think was a really interesting dialogue on what we all currently know as PTSD. And I love the fact that they call it shell shock, you know, that it didn’t really have a name. Much like the term anxiety. That doesn’t exist in his world. He’s like, No, you mean you’re scared. And I wanted to bring that kind of gruff, almost uneducated version of it to the character.”
I know you've mentioned Jensen not doing much research into his character's, and it sounds like here, he did attempt to do some research into Soldier Boy and his backstory, but I get the impression that he started doing the research, realized it was too hard, and basically said 'whatever, Kripke will tell me what to do'. At least, that's how it feels based on the lack of emotional gravitas I felt from his portrayal of Solider Boy. It makes me wish that Kripke hadn't fought so hard for him and that Amazon and Sony went with one of the other names they were considering. I can only imagine how good it could have been with a different actor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To answer your question, an actor playing an idea of a character is never, ever the right way to create a good performance. This is what Jensen did. It stuck because he was dynamic but aside from this he diluted 99% of who Soldier Boy is because he was in his head and not truly living the part. Jensen has an idea of what other actors do so he tries to mimic that, that is also not so efficient. This is a classic case of someone's looks and charisma overtaking the performance itself. People ignored the lack of dimension because they were enthralled by the idea of SB and Jensen is fairly dynamic in some moments. But his performance could have been sooo much more. I saw online that people are saying his team submitted him for an Emmy nomination( for those that didn't know, that is how you get considered for a nomination, by first entering). I doubt he will make it into a full nomination given his performance but that is all relative to what the performances are like overall. I don't think submitting him with this performance was a smart move but, who knows, I might be proven wrong.
I am more focused on him landing or self producing a groundbreaking role but, to do that, he needs to up his performances. He's special in his own way but he is very far from A list level. Compare the stiffness and lack of realness of SB to Homelander or to the lead of the series. Even there the difference is quite noticeable. He does have an iconic face though and can be very dynamic and connected when he chooses to be, he just needs more dedication to this craft and understanding it rather than vying for fame and making counterintuitive moves casting as well as producing and submission wise.
Thank you for the beautiful ask! 💖💖💖

'I just needed a break': Jensen Ackles on 'The Boys,' toxic masculinity and 'Supernatural' spinoff

The CW's Supernatural proved to overstay its welcome on the network, stretching itself out to be far longer than what was necessary. The once-horror show lost its luster after Season 5 and proved that even with a popular following, there wasn't enough strength given to support its long legs. The show was originally supposed to conclude with its fifth season, and honestly, it should have. Supernatural Season 5 gave Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester fitting final bows that reflected an ending that was more honest to each of their characters. It told each of their stories concisely without having the need to reach for ways to see them go on their next adventure. Supernatural achieved its initial goal by completing story arcs, and wrapping the first handful of seasons up with a climatic battle felt like the most memorable way to send the series off. The series continuing to move past season 5 made it more evident that perhaps less is more regarding its constant renewal status. The canonical ending of Supernatural, and the seasons leading up to the show's ultimate demise, make evident that The CW should have agreed to end the show earlier on. There was a plan in place for how Supernatural initially wanted to unfold, and it was foolish for the network to ask for more.
Supernatural first aired in 2005 and quickly became an iconic series on The CW. The intense following allowed the show's presence to flourish on social media platforms and continue to become more prominent in the public eye. Supernatural became inescapable, yet despite how obsessed and dedicated the fan base became, doomed itself by staying around for far too long. The horror-drama followed the monster-hunting Winchester brothers across the United States, chasing down theological figures, cryptics, and other legendary creatures. It leaned heavily into themes of Catholicism and pulled its plot points directly from Biblical stories, re-imagining each for the modern day. Unfortunately, Supernatural could only stay self-engaged for so long, and the early signs of the show losing sight of its future began to show following Season 5. Once things moved past that fifth season, it became obvious that Supernatural should have stopped while it was ahead.
'Supernatural' Was Originally Supposed To End With Season 5
Jensen Ackles with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jared Padalecki in SupernaturalImage via The CW
The Supernatural showrunning team originally didn't plan for their show to carry on past a fifth season, and their initial plan was to bring the series to a close by the end of its fifth season. Swan Song wanted to be the definitive end of Supernatural, and honestly, it should have been. It was designed to satisfy Supernatural's core storyline and keep the Apocalypse from being too large for the series to handle. Later seasons proved that Supernatural bit off more than it could chew. Ackles and Padalecki had contractually obliged themselves to a six-season run, and The CW permitted Supernatural to return due to how high ratings continued to be. "Swan Song" was literally supposed to be the swan song of the show as a whole. Even if there was one more season that had yet to be honored, there wasn't really a written agreement that kept cast and crew bound to the series past a sixth season. Six seasons of Supernatural was more than enough, though The CW should have honored that five-part plan.
Dean's arc was supposed to be finalized by the time the fifth season took its final bow. The transition of how his loyalties took new shape over the course of the show's first five-part installment gave Ackles' gruff monster hunter a larger purpose than just following in his father's footsteps. Having Dean take on an identity crisis was detrimental to his character development, and allowing him to become his own person by the end of Supernatural Season 5 was a suitable note to dismiss the series. That meaningful journey of self-discovery was essential to exploring Dean's full potential and gratifying his narrative without needing to be excessive. "Swan Song" successfully caps off the battle between Earth and Heaven.
Season 5 of Supernatural delivered a strong, confident ending to the show, just as the showrunners once intended there to be. The fifth season cleanly wrapped up everything the show had accomplished so far, and was crafted to touch on making sure each narrative was given its own resolution. The scope of the Winchester family was fleshed out to give their dysfunction depth and meaning. This unconventional, uncomfortable take on a family unit was reflected by the show's religion-inspired subplots, and the parallels were designed to stretch across five seasons. Sam's arc in particular was a carefully measured approach to the struggles he'd face, and purposefully knows how it wants to pace itself throughout a five-part arc. The impact of how Sam's life is changed over a handful of seasons is crushed beneath the weight of a show that's become too bloated for its own good and diminishes the care that was put into his personal storyline. Sam sacrifices the dream of a normal, domestic life in order to seek out his own revenge over the course of a long-term series. By the time Season 15 rolled around, it felt like his choice to invest in the "family business" of saving people and hunting things over pursuing a life of his own was a mistake.
The CW Opted For Quantity Over Quality
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in Supernatural Image via The CW
Supernatural didn't need to venture out past five seasons. Just because Supernatural creator Eric Kripke could go on to pursue an additional 10 seasons didn't mean they had to. Supernatural ventured deeper into its long-winded catalog while logging over 300 episodes into its total count. Things started to thin out once Season 6 rolled around and Supernatural started to face a decline in quality. The plot lines began to break under the weight of expectation, and the central narrative was running out of ideas when it came down to originality vs. redundancy. A dead end was hit fairly quickly, and the success of the initial five-season run slowly yet surely started to crumble. The quality of shows aired on The CW remains questionable, with series like Riverdale or abandoned projects such as The Powerpuff Girls presenting themselves with more shock value when dissecting how the network approached them. Supernatural fell victim to CW-ification and remained to be at its best when it was a horror show. In later seasons, the show took itself less seriously as a whole, fell out of touch with its horror roots, and had an almost fan-fiction feel when exploring later chapters of its self-propagated saga.
If Supernatural had stuck to limiting itself when parsing itself down to a shorter televised run, it could have avoided exhausting itself altogether. Supernatural suffered from being uninspired in its later seasons, and struggled to introduce compelling, new, and fresh aspects of the show. Not every season of Supernatural was perfect, and that redundancy began to kill the spirit of the earlier seasons. It began to play as a contractual obligation when The CW ordered more of Supernatural, and the show's actual ending was deemed to be incredibly divisive. There were no more "monsters of the week," and Supernatural's ongoing need to be relevant cost the show its reputation.
From one point of view, it could be said that Supernatural felt like a chore to finish, and the lack of a clear plan for where the series wanted to take itself next spoke for its desire for quantity over quality. Characters started to feel dry and inorganic while running out of things to do on screen, and it became challenging to invest in them past a certain point. Supernatural didn't have to be so long to insist that it was still good. Short-form storytelling in television, like the show's first idea of sticking to five seasons, can remain to be incredibly impactful when crafted to the best of its ability. The first five seasons of Supernatural were all the show really needed to be successful as a whole, and it should have ended there.

Let me know and other twilight blogs of what you think about this My fancast for twilight if it was made in the 90s
Bella- Jennifer Aniston or Reese Witherspoon
Edward - Johnny Depp
Alice- Neve Campbell
Rosalie- Alicia silver stone
Emmett- Mark Walhberg
Jasper- Jensen Ackles
Carlisle- Paul Rudd
Esme- Julia Roberts
Jacob- Either Adam beach or Mario Lopez
ooooh very interesting!! Here's what i think:
Bella - I think Jennifer and Reese are more apt to playing higher energy roles to play bella. I personally would cast Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman, or Angelina Jolie!
Edward - Depp could be a good choice based on his performance in Edward Scissorhands (name coincidence unrelated, lol) but i could also see Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt (thanks, interview with the vampire!)
Alice - HERE i think that Witherspoon would be a good choice, think Legally Blonde energy but less ditsy.
Rosalie - I'm feeling Nicole Kidman or Demi Moore! solely a vibes thing, not super familiar w their works so not sure about their acting styles. and then on the other hand, Uma Thurman tho 👀👀
Emmett - AGREE with Mark Wahlberg. Very Emmett vibes from his tbh.
Jasper - young Leo Dicaprio would be perfect imo!!
Carlisle -agree w paul rudd, could also see Daniel Day-Lewis because lets be honest, he was a fashion ICON in the 90s...
Esme - can see Julia Roberts just based solely on the fact shes a ray of sunshine! Could also see Cameron Diaz.
Jacob - AGREE with Adam Beach, PERFECT choice!!

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Holiday Season
Had an opportunity to sit down and really take in this adaptions of one of my favorite stories in the batman lore, Batman: The Long Halloween part One. This story is one of the most influential in all of comics and, indeed, is constantly referenced by any modern live action Bat-flick. The Dark Knight, arguable the best of the many Batman films, is basically just this narrative. It’s literally just The Long Halloween so seeing the graphic novel properly adapted, with all of it’s twists and turns, is something I've always wanted. Now that’s it’s here, how does it hold up?
The Good
I love this art style. It smacks of Batman: The Animated Series but with a modern polish, while paying homage to the surreal pen of Art Sale. One of the reasons i fell in over with the graphic novel was Sale’s almost psychotic rendition of Gotham, it’s many characters, and his use of shadow. None of that unique flair is lost on this production, even if it’s kind of tightened up at points. Like, take Catwoman. I loved Tim Sale’s take, the purple suit is kind of the Selina i grew up with, but I'd be lying if i said i didn’t enjoyed the version of her in this film even more.
I just mentioned this but i need to emphasize how at home this feels in the BTAS universe. It’s a like a adult version of an episode from that show. That should lend a bit of credibility to the quality on hand. Part One is pg-13, and you really feel that, but Part Two is supposed to be R. I’m looking forward to seeing how hard they go because the back half of this narrative gets real bloody, real fast.
I have to admit, the animation is pretty okay. Most of the time. It can fall of the cliff occasionally but, for the most part, it’s some of the best in these Animated DC films. The use of CG is beautifully integrated into the hand drawn bits and it really puts Invincible to shame that way. People were praising that show for how awesome it looked but i was never impressed. I wasn’t that impressed with Halloween either but it was still better than Amazon’s production.
I have to say, this voice cast is legit. There are some real hitters in this and they really deliver.  Jensen Ackles is a surprisingly decent Batman, which is kind of hilarious to me, because he plays Jason Todd in my favorite of these animated flicks, Under the Red Hood. Naya Rivera is outstanding as Catwoman and Troy Baker is absolutely the next Joker, after Hamill decides to retire. Always a pleasure seeing Josh Duhamel and his Harvey Dent is a seething ball of rage, teetering on the edge of madness while Titus Welliver’s Carmine Falcone is just f*cking insidious. Billy Burke, Julie Nathanson, Jack Quaid, and Alastair Duncan, are all great in their respective roles but, holy sh*t, did David Dastmalchian’s Calendar Man give off Hannibal vibes! Great choice on that one, for sure!
I just have to emphasize just how much i enjoy this version of Catwoman. Naya breathes this character and her loss is a real tragedy.
I absolutely love this narrative so there wasn’t a question I'd gravitate toward a cinematic adaption but, i have to say, i was a little surprised by how tight this bad boy is. Like, the script, itself, is really good for something based on a comic book. I can see this thing being a proper live action adaption and being considered almost as great as the best of the Bat-flicks.
I’m just really glad this exists. The Long Halloween is one of the best, one of the quintessential, Batman narratives out there and it’s kind of a crime there has never been a proper adaption.
The Meh
Kind of wanted this thing to be a little more visceral. The Long Halloween is one of the darkest, most violent, Bat-stories ever. They kind of flirt with that carnage a little bit, but this part didn’t go full Holiday, if you know what i mean. The second one is supposed to get real gritty so i can give this one a pass but it sucks that we have to wait a month to get the real feel of this narrative.
The pacing is a bit wonky. I can see people complaining about how slow this thing is at times but i chock that up to the nature of this story. In a graphic novel or comic, you can tell a story in a certain manner but that doesn’t translate all that way to film. I’m fine with what we were given but i can totally see other people completely frustrated by the plotting, especially with Joker shows up. You just want SO much more of that guy.
The Bad
The way this story is told, hinges on the passage of time. This adaptation does a bad job of conveying that. The book is fine. You can consolidate a day or holiday, into one issue, This movie can’t do that and, at times, struggles with telling this particular aspect of the story, correctly.
I mentioned this before, but sometimes the animation can be really rough. Like, there’s a scene toward the end where that sh*t just falls of a cliff. These shots are few and far in between, but they are very noticeable and very jarring. If i didn’t love this story so much, i can see how this would take you out of the experience.
The Verdict
This sh*t is good. Real good! The Long Halloween is one of the best Batman stories ever told. It deserves to be treated with respect and reverence. Batman: The Long Halloween part One does just that. It has an incredible cast who all deliver wonderful performances, a familiar art style that feels both nostalgic and unique, a relatively tight narrative that pulls in the best bits of the source material while cleaving free some of the fat, and just an overall gorgeous production. This movie is easily one of the best in the animated DC vault, even if it is a little flawed. Warner did right by this iconic story and delivered something that puts The Killing Joke, another quintessential Bat-story, to shame. If you’re a fan of the Bat, you’ll love this movie. If you’re a fan of animation, you’ll love this movie. If you just want to see Batman done right, you’ll love this movie.
