After talking about nostalgia, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at posting patterns. And since I can’t get at fandom’s posting patterns overall, I decided to look at mine. This is a product of jetblackcode and my archive pages on DW and Tumblr.
Both DW and LJ share some info about you on your profile page. It doesn’t precisely match what I found in my calendar view. Does it include posts to communities? One’s total comment count definitely does. And of course, plenty of people have left and aren’t showing on profile pages anymore, but I think there are still some instructive points of comparison.
Tumblr:
According to Jetblackcode, 96.60% of posts are reblogs and over 50% of blogs have >5k posts. They average 617 original posts on the blogs they look at.
My tumblr has:
1,094,647 notes
25080 posts including 13,687 original and11,393 reblogs
935 original photo posts
534 original text posts
12218 other original posts (i.e. ASKPOCALYPSE)
I follow around 700 people and am followed by 6k, 1k of whom have arrived in the last 4 months.
As you can see, askpocalypse only took off in the last couple of years. Before that, I had bumps of activity when I was reblogging the MFU movie or deadpool or some other then-current fandom every day and started to get a few followers who were there for topic-specific posting. I started going viral a bit more around the porn ban because I’d posted the prescient A History of Fandom Purges just before, but all of my viral meta from back then combined is nothing to now.
DW/LJ:
According to DW:
4,989 comments received
5,606 comments posted
792 journal entries
I have ~300 subscribers and follow similar numbers, but that’s not because DW is quieter than LJ. That’s in line with what I would ever have had on LJ.
According to LJ:
2,192 comments received
16,433 comments posted
713 journal entries
The actual number of journal entries I counted on my calendar on DW for the chart above is 680. Did I miss a bunch? Did I really have that many in communities? Possibly.
Anyway, you can see on the graph above that I was highly active on LJ from 2003 to 2011 with a dip in 05-06 for moving to Japan and then NYC and being busy with personal life stuff. After that point, I was still crossposting from DW to LJ and I was still in the journal world, but things were tapering off.
A big thing to notice is how many more comments I posted than received on LJ: that’s the product of me being active in other people’s comments sections and not being a BNF at all. I didn’t post much fic, and I didn’t have anything serialized in my journal in a way that would have brought in big crowds, nor was I making most of the popular top-level meta posts in those days.
Comment counts got more even on DW, but that’s not a good thing: it’s a symptom of people talking 1:1 but I don’t mean in private. A thread will be ABABAB, not the branching, multi-person conversations of the height of LJ.
The other big takeaway from my LJ/DW is that I have always been garbage at tagging. Heh.
Let’s look at a BNF:
Astolat’s LJ info page shows
28,969 comments received
11,703 comments posted
1,203 journal entries
262 friends
2,829 followers
And DW:
32,996 comments received
4,166 comments posted
1297 gives access to
2149 followers
Those are more BNFy numbers. IDK whether astolat used to follow a thousand people on LJ instead of a few hundred, but it’s possible the move away from calling them “friends” made her more open to following people back.
We can see the typical skew in more comments received than given, but we’re still looking at a very different kind of distribution than on Tumblr. These sorts of numbers are what you get on a platform where a higher percentage of interactions are contentful and meaningful.
(If you’re curious about astolat’s tumblr presence, you can put her blog into jetblack code. She apparently has 51,590 notes 395 original posts and 1669 reblogs.)
As we bemoan on modern platforms all the time, producing solid work of our own is slow and difficult and easily drowned out by viral sharing and repackaging activities. DW/LJ show a glimpse into what a slower, less viral site looks like.

people on this site are constantly complaing about how characters always look too pretty, showing too much skin or having technicolor eyes or whatever, and you get these characters that actually like real women and not supermodels and the fandoms like, this is bad actually? i think you guys dont even know what you want honestly. also the original winx cartoon already lightskinned the few brown girls they had lol.
Really?
Tumblr media
[ID: a picture of the original winx club cartoon. There’s six girls, all of them are wearing their fairy transformation outfits. On the top left we have Aisha/Layla. She’s standing with her arms crossed and a smile on her face. Her eyes are brown, her skin is dark, and her hair is auburny brown and curly. On her right we have Tecna, who’s body is facing the viewer, one hand placed on her hip, and her face is angled to the right, showing her face in profile. She has light skin, hot pink short hair, and has green eyes. Next to her we have Bloom. She’s doing the typical magical girl pose, with one leg in the air and her hands extended. She has blue eyes, wavy ginger hair, and light skin. Then we have Flora. Her legs are posed in X position (knees facing inward) with her arms to her side. Her skin is dark, but lighter than Aisha’s, and she has light brown hair with blonde e-girl bangs, and has green eyes. Below Aisha we have Musa, who’s sitting with her back to the viewer, looking at us over her shoulder. She has light skin, her eyes are smaller than any of the other girls and are very dark, you can barely see her pupils. She has jetblack hair styled in two high pigtails. She’s also wearing headphones. Stella is next to Musa, facing the viewer. She’s sitting, supporting herself with her arms. She has a slightly tanned light skin, amber colored eyes, and blonde hair styled in low and long pigtails. She’s also wearing a blue diadem. End ID]
Your first point, on how they look too pretty: it’s... a cartoon... aimed at little girls... idk about you but when I was a little girl I didn’t like to watch “ugly” looking cartoons. Even the villains and teachers in this cartoon were pretty. Even the old headmistress of alfea was pretty, she didn’t have a single wrinkle. Another reason for them being “too pretty” is because their designs were based off of real celebs who were popular at the time or are still popular. Flora is designed after Jennifer Lopez, Tecna after Pink, Musa after Lucy Lui etc. Are their bodies unrealistically thin? Yes, they very much are, and they’re not diverse at all. That’s the one issue I had with the original cartoon.
Then you say they show too much skin: uhh, I don’t know if you’re aware but this show was made in the early 2000’s, aka the era of crop tops, low rise jeans, booty shorts, short skirts, etc. Celebs wore this stuff on red carpets. These are supposed to be fashion foreward 16yr old girls. You’re not gonna tell me you’ve never seen a 16yr old in a crop top are you? Also, let women wear what they want? They don’t exist for you to gawk at them like they’re a walking exhibition? Why are you sexualising 16yr olds?
There’s only 6 main characters and three of them are woc. Aisha is black, Flora is brown and latina, Musa is east asian. Their character design shows this very clearly, with Musa’s eyes being small and dark and her hair also being dark, Aisha’s skin being dark and her lips fuller than the others, and her hair being curly. Flora’s skin is also darker, albeit not darker than Aisha’s. Her latina coding came from episodes where her parents and culture was featured. Flora is the only character of color with light hair and light eyes. Musa is the only character of color with very light skin, but that’s not unrealistic.
Netflix on the other hand, completely erased Tecna, who had short hair and who’s interests were very tech related. They whitewashed both Musa and Flora and renamed Flora Terra. The only diversity left is Aisha, who thank fuck is still a black girl, and then Terra, who’s a plus size girl. I’ve said this before, I love plus size representation since I’m considered plus size, but NEVER at the expense of brown women.
Idk if you’ve noticed but I NEVER spoke on these actresses’s looks, I never once called them ugly, it’s literally NOT the reason I’m upset at this live action. I’m upset bc Netflix whitewashed two out of three woc, erased the one character with interests that are considered “masculine” (by society), and decided to dress these girls the way I dressed when I was 12. I’m not upset with the actresses at all, I’m upset with netflix, the show’s writers, the casting director and the costume designer.
The way you just spoke to me clearly shows you didn’t even READ my post complaining about this show. You’re clearly just trying to find away to DEFEND netflix’s erasure and it’s ugly.

Walmart Launches Members-Only, Text-Based Personal Shopping Service
Walmart is betting that some consumers – particularly busy parents – are willing to pay a monthly fee for the ability to shop (and receive product recommendations) via text messaging.
The discounter announced the official launch of Jetblack, a members-only personal shopping service that it described as combining “the convenience of eCommerce with the customized attention of a personal assistant.” The service is now available in limited release to customers in Manhattan and part of Brooklyn.
Jetblack is the first business to launch from Walmart’s technology incubator, Store No.8, where it previously operated under wraps as “Code 8.” It is led by Jenny Fleiss, co-founder of Rent the Runway, who joined Walmart last year.
With the launch of Jetblack, Walmart has made its first foray into conversational commerce – or the ability to shop through text messaging, online chat or voice. The service lets members order everything from toiletries and household items, to toys and fashion with a text message. It will then find the right products and deliver them the same or next day for no additional charge.
“With Jetblack, we have created an entirely new concept that enables consumers to get exactly what they need through the convenience of text messaging and the freedom of a nearly unlimited product catalogue,” said Fleiss, co-founder and CEO of Jetblack. “We are confident this service will make shopping frictionless, more personalized and delightful.”
Jetblack, which will cost members $50 per month, is targeted at more affluent shoppers, specifically busy urban parents. It includes access to personal shoppers who will offer members curated shopping recommendations (based on the member’s request) sent via text. (Other benefits include free wrapping and easy returns.)
In coming up with product recommenations, Jetblack uses a combination of artificial intelligence practices and expertise from professional buyers across the home, health, parenting, fashion and wellness categories, as well as parents themselves. While some everyday essentials may be sourced from Walmart and Jet.com, other items and specialty products are procured from local brands and specialty shop.
The idea for Jetblack was developed and refined within Store No 8, which was established by Marc Lore last year shortly after he was named president and CEO of Walmart U.S. eCommerce.
“Our e-commerce strategy has been focused on three elements: nailing the fundamentals, leveraging our unique strengths to play offense and innovating for the future,” said Lore. “Through Store No 8 and Jetblack, we’re able to build and test technology that can lay the foundation for capabilities we believe will have a profound impact on how customers may shop five years from now. Powered by conversational commerce, the future of retail will bring convenience and high-touch personalization to the forefront for consumers everywhere and I’m so excited to have Jenny lead the charge.”
Jetblack is not yet available to the general public, even in its opening markets. The website invites customers to join the “wait list.”

McHanzo Week, Day 2: Star Trek AU
Here’s my contribution to Day 2 of McHanzo Week: Canon Divergence || AU! I went for a TNG/DS9-era Star Trek AU!
McCree plunked down on the bar stool and gave his best dazzling smile. “Hey there, we haven’ really been introduced, have we? Name’s McCree. Jesse McCree. I’m one of the Survival Strategies instructors. Yer Hanzo, right?”
He had spent no small amount of time calculating this approach, trying for what he felt would get the best reaction. What it got was no reaction, less than no reaction if it were possible. McCree’s smile faded a little into something more thoughtful. One of those types, eh? Silent, stern, wrapped up tighter than an Academy cadet during final exams?
It had taken him a long time to appreciate those types. It had been one of the stickier points of contention between him and his mother over the centuries--Jesse liked to do most of his listening in flowing conversations--but the El-Aurian had long since learned that there was value in listening to silence. He settled in, leaning against the bar and beginning to nurse his drink as Hanzo pointedly stared into his own glass.
Not that he didn’t know anything at all about the mysterious being currently sitting at his side at the bar. It was impossible not to hear the rumors that swirled around the striking Klingon who had seemingly shown up out of nowhere to take a position as a combat instructor at the Academy, despite not having served in Starfleet, or any fleet at all as far as anyone knew. It didn’t seem to matter; the cadets had quickly learned that Hanzo was a force to be reckoned with, even for a Klingon. White-faced freshmen and starry-eyed tactical officer hopefuls alike were constantly milling outside the office he shared with one of McCree’s closest friends, Fareeha Amari, which she had reported to McCree with pointed exasperation. Both cadets and Academy personnel were bombarding the far more approachable Egyptian lieutenant with questions about the mysterious Klingon, questions which she refused to answer with an eye towards professional conduct.
McCree had gotten much better results with the El-Aurian method, by simply listening to her. None of the other instructors or professors knew that Hanzo spent most of his free time on the Academy’s holodecks, for example, having already worked halfway through the most rigorous combat training programs--the ones McCree had helped design. Or that, despite his classes’ focus on close quarters combat and battlefield tactics, his true speciality was marksmanship, one of McCree’s true loves. Or that he had come by his position at the Academy through a chance encounter with Admiral Amari, who had apparently scooped him up and shipped him off to the Academy from some backwater planet in the Neutral Zone within a day of meeting him. Fareeha had looked very chagrined to let that piece of information drop, looking at her glass of synthehol suspiciously afterwards. McCree preferred to credit his listening skills, honed over the centuries. You heard all sorts of things if you listened hard enough, after all.
If nothing else he heard about Hanzo had piqued his curiosity, a personal recruitment by Admiral Amari would have done it. McCree had been personally recruited himself, once.
That first night, McCree learned little more than what everyone else had, sans Fareeha. Hanzo spoke only to order more to drink, in a tone that was imperial yet oddly courteous. He continued to ignore McCree outright, which McCree easily accommodated by asking no new questions. He took the enforced silence as an opportunity to study the Klingon, taking in how he was perhaps the most casually dressed Klingon he had ever seen, wearing nothing of the battle-ready gear that seemed to define the species in every space, public or private. The leather motif was still there, but much softer and of much higher quality than he saw on most Klingons, dressed in a black fitted jacket with matching trousers that were meant for comfort and aesthetics rather than a fight. The jetblack hair that started above his prominent forehead ridges was gathered back into a relaxed ponytail that sat at the base of his neck. And, for the first time in Jesse’s long life, he had met a Klingon with facial piercings, through the thick bridge of his nose and several through his bottom lip.
What tickled McCree most, however, was that if one were to step back and study the Klingon’s body proportions, without being able to see how he towered over McCree’s considerable stature, he would have seemed far shorter. He seemed almost wider than he was tall, even if the breadth of his shoulders and arms and torso and legs were completely muscle, which the leather accentuated perfectly.
Oh yes, McCree would be interested in listening to this man even if he had heard absolutely nothing about him previously.
When Hanzo stood to go, swaying ever-so-slightly from so much drink, he met McCree’s eyes for a moment, just long enough for a considering look before he swept out of the bar and disappeared into the misty July San Francisco streets. McCree was not the only one to watch him go; this bar was favored by the great majority of the Academy’s personnel, and McCree could see he was not the only one watching the Klingon closely. Professors Winston and Oxton, the Chronology specialists, were quick to intercept him and demand to know if he had managed to pry anything out of him. He smiled and shrugged his shoulders, prompting Oxton to huff and complain, “I’ve never seen you sit so still and quiet for so long! I was betting with Winston that you’d met him before and had some secret code going on!” McCree could only throw his head back and laugh.
The next week, Hanzo appeared again, alone at the bar in the same spot. McCree slid back onto the stool, this time with only a murmured, “Hello again,” as a greeting before settling in again. He drained his bourbon (a syntheholic variant, regrettably) with a flourish before peering at Hanzo’s drink.
“Get me some o’ the same, if you would, please,” he called over to the bartender, who glanced at Hanzo before mouthing your funeral as he turned away to grab the deep red glass bottle.
Apparently Hanzo thought the same, because he felt the need to give him a word of warning.
“Klingon beverages are not the faint of heart.” His voice was deep and roughened with disuse, but there was still that strange courteous overtone, and even an edge of mirth. He still didn’t deign to look at McCree, preferring to gaze with laser-like intensity at his drink instead.
McCree gave him a lopsided smile. “Don’ you worry none. I prefer a little bite to my liquor.”
Hanzo looked at him sidelong. “You will certainly find that bloodwine bites back.” McCree only had time to chuckle before the bartender returned and set his order down. McCree picked it up with a little flourish and knocked back a good swallow.
And immediately started hacking and coughing.
Through his fit, he could see Hanzo smirking, the bastard.
“How predictable,” he murmured as he sipped at his own bloodwine before setting it down and reaching over to McCree and taking his glass away as he thumped at his chest with a closed fist, trying to alleviate the river of fire burning down his throat. He was still smirking when McCree finally managed to breath again, no small amount of tears leaking from his eyes.
He did blink in surprise when McCree motioned at his glass, still held in Hanzo’s enormous hand. “You cannot be serious.”
“Haven’--had a--drink like that--in a century--or two,” wheezed McCree as he reached out and swiped the glass out of Hanzo’s grasp. “It’s--sweet, but--hell of a--kick. Might become--my favorite--in a year or two.”
The Klingon stared, impassive, for a few seconds before he threw his head back and laughed, deep, bellowing, barking laughter that made the rest of the bar start, from the sudden noise and the way the Klingon cut it off, though the smirk remained. “Well, then. That will give me time to find and import some chech'tluth. Then you will know what a drink with bite truly is.”
The rest of that evening was spent with McCree working his way through the rest of that single glass, sniffling and coughing throughout, as Hanzo merely observed and maybe even enjoyed the show, if McCree wasn’t imagining the small but persistent sparkle in his eye. He got up after he reached a similar level of inebriation as the week before, but this time he did bid a quiet farewell as he strode away. McCree couldn’t help but smile. A victory was a victory.
The next week, Hanzo did not arrive until well after McCree. McCree took up his now-usual spot even when he saw that Hanzo wasn’t there, and he felt a rush of satisfaction when Hanzo slid into place beside him. Satisfaction--and more than a little relief which had him smiling. After such a long life, he recognized the signs.
“Greetings,” said Hanzo. He raised an eyebrow at McCree’s drink, some clear and blue concoction. “You are wise to pace yourself.”
McCree grinned. “Pacing myself? This here is Romulan ale. They just re-legalized it--gotta get it now before they realize their mistake.”
Hanzo sniffed. “It was illegal here, perhaps, but out in the Neutral Zone it is quite popular, since the Romulans themselves are next door.”
“Well, then, get yourself a glass and see how the bootleg compares with this legal stuff. Gotta know if I’m gettin’ my money’s worth.”
Hanzo raised an eyebrow haughtily, but he waved the bartender over and ordered more of the same. McCree grinned. Whatever stories this man had to tell, McCree was well on his way to hearing them. But, as Hanzo sniffed at the blue liquid in his tumbler in his giant hand before knocking it back and exposing the long, muscled column of his neck, McCree could admit to himself that he might become as interested in the man himself as his words.

Jetblack Is the Chic-Commerce Service You Never Expected From Walmart
Jetblack, a new shopping service that combines the convenience of eCommerce with the customized attention of a personal assistant, is now available in limited release to customers in Manhattan and part of Brooklyn. Founded and led by Rent the Runway co-founder Jenny Fleiss, Jetblack offers its members the ability to text nearly any shopping request and Jetblack will find the right products and deliver them the same or next day, for no additional charge.
Spotted in the wild: new Jetblack delivery bags with @dicarolina! Chic & recyclable- they'll hit your doorstep starting today! #jetblack #newbags #upgrade #newpackaging #jetblackbags #nycmom #lifewithkids #jetblacklife #motherhoodunplugged #momsohard #deliveredbyj #freedelivery #thelittlesurprises #inthedetails
A post shared by Jetblack (@jetblack) on May 29, 2018 at 2:15pm PDT
Forget e-commerce; this is chic-commerce for in-the-know shoppers (urban moms, gay dads and anyone who could use an assistant who gets it—literally). The AI-enabled mobile concierge service, which is targeting affluent mothers in urban areas with its chic black packaging and Moneypenny-like “J” chatbot, is the first portfolio company to launch from Walmart’s technology incubator, Store No 8, where it previously operated in stealth as “Code Eight.” Fleiss (right) left RtR last year to serve as Code Eight/Store No 8, where more innovative business ideas are in development.
Powered by expert research and personal recommendations, the Jetblack subscription service lets members order everything from toiletries and household items, to toys and fashion with a simple text message. Launching initially in New York City, Jetblack is creating the next step in premium retail with a conversational commerce experience that saves members time, money and energy. You can learn more about Jetblack (and sign up for the waitlist) by visiting Jetblack.com.
Hello future. We’re excited to announce the introduction of @jetblack, a new conversational shopping service led by @jenny_rtr. Want to know more? https://t.co/lmwqqZDlF9 #StoreNo8 #GoBeyond pic.twitter.com/GZVTFILXZ8
— StoreNo8 (@storeno8) May 31, 2018
“We are thrilled to introduce Jetblack to the world today,” says Fleiss. “Consumers are looking for more efficient ways to shop for themselves and their families without having to compromise on product quality. With Jetblack, we have created an entirely new concept that enables consumers to get exactly what they need through the convenience of text messaging and the freedom of a nearly unlimited product catalogue. We are confident this service will make shopping frictionless, more personalized and delightful.”
Customers subscribe for $50 a month, and in return can get virtually as many products as they want, except foods that need to be refrigerated or alcohol. As Fleiss commented to Inc., convenience and personalization will set Jetblack apart.
The average customer in its beta test, she added, buys around 10 items per week, and the service will save their preference data to serve up their favorite brands accordingly. Jetblack, which is fully financed through the Store No. 8 incubator, will source Walmart and Jet.com products “where appropriate” for everyday items such as paper towels. Over time, however, the goal is to set up wholesale deals with a variety of retailers.
The idea for Jetblack was developed and refined within Store No 8, which was established by Jet.com founder Marc Lore last year after he was named President and CEO of Walmart U.S. eCommerce. Store No 8 has been working to incubate capabilities, powered by emerging technologies, that will transform the future of commerce. Walmart believes one of those capabilities is conversational commerce—or the ability to shop through text messaging, online chat or voice—and Jetblack is the first step along that journey.
Jetblack’s 9-point promise to customers:
Personal shopping over text message
Fast and free delivery (same or next day for most items)
Courier delivery in lightweight, recyclable bags
Free gift wrapping and handwritten gift cards
Curated recommendations
On-demand access to category experts
Competitive pricing on all items
Hassle-free returns — we’ll pick it up!
NO minimum spend (including rush)
The race to serve customers with virtual concierge shopping services is fierce. Amazon Lex, currently available to third-party businesses, is built on the technology underlying its digital assistant, Alexa. Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and Google all offer voice-controlled digital assistant that could be harnessed to order products online.
Jetblack aims to offer a more bespoke, personalized experience. Through its curated shopping recommendations sent via text, Jetblack can deliver time-strapped urban parents everything from birthday gifts to household essentials. The service uses a combination of artificial intelligence and expertise from professional buyers across the home, health, parenting, fashion and wellness categories, as well as parents themselves.

While everyday essentials may be sourced from Walmart and Jet.com, other items and specialty products are procured from local brands and shops. Examples from the beta test have included sourcing a specific beauty cream from a member’s favorite local boutique, curating custom Easter baskets and delivering them once the kids are asleep and rushing beach essentials to a family on vacation. Jetblack launched its closed beta in Manhattan early this year and members (according to Walmart) say shopping with Jetblack is as easy as texting a close friend who knows your preferences.

“Our eCommerce strategy has been focused on three elements: nailing the fundamentals, leveraging our unique strengths to play offense and innovating for the future,” Lore stated.

The logistics-savvy Fleiss noted to Inc. that her prior experience helps her keep a pulse on what customers want: “At Rent the Runway, we would make everyone answer customer service calls, and occasionally pack orders ourselves,” she commented. “That’s a big part of Jetblack, too.” The startup’s warehouse assembly room is in-office, for instance, where Fleiss checks in multiple times a day. “This challenge of people ordering at super high frequency and a really long tail of products—from paper towels to Hermes bangles—requires a lot of merchandising expertise.”
