List of Jewish Characters for the Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo

I've gotten a few requests for a list of Jewish characters to help people brainstorm for the bingo -- just as a reminder, Jewish headcanons and fanons are totally allowed for the event, so if you don't KNOW whether your character is Jewish, it's totally fine to make them Jewish for your fanwork! :)

July 2023 Reading Wrap Up

I've been pondering starting a bookish instagram, but in the likely event I never do, here are the monthly wrap up images I made for July 2023. Remembering Bill Butler and Vivian Timble

Here is my combined remembrance to two entertainers we lost this week:

Remembering Bill Butler 1921-2023

Cinematographer Bill Butler has died at 101 (not a typo). He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was shared with Haskell Wexler. He was Director of Photography and in the camera dept. on numerous films, but the highlights include Jaws (my favorite of his films), Grease, Rocky II - IV, Stripes, Biloxi Blues, Child's Play (easily the best Chucky movie), and Hot Shots!.

Remembering Vivian Trimble 1963-2023

Musician Vivian Trimble has died at 59. She was the keyboardist for Luscious Jackson from 1991 to 1998. 

The NYC group was a big part of the Alternative Nation in the mid 90s. I first became aware of them with their song “Citysong”, which was on MTV and they performed on SNL. In June 1995, I saw Luscious Jackson open for R.E.M. at Great Woods (Mansfield, MA) and they had some good songs, but I got the sense they would play better in a club. In the following years they had some appearances on movies soundtracks including Clueless and Good Will Hunting. They also had some hits like “Naked Eye”, one of my favorites of 1997. In addition to Luscious Jackson, Trimble and bandmate Jill Cunniff had their side project Kostars. After Trimble left Luscious Jackson, she formed the short-lived Dusty Trails with Josephine Wiggs of The Breeders.

Title : Jon’s downright ridiculous shooting case ( Jon’s Mysteries )

This book and the series itself is PURE GOLD. It keeps getting better and better and I honestly can’t wait for more installments of this story. So, here we have Jon ( Jonathan Bane ) who works with the police as a human lie detector— using his gift as a Psychic. He can tell a lot about a person because he’s able to see their Aura. He fries any electronics near him, he has to wear sunglasses & he has no Anchor to ground his powers which is always on. Then he meets Donovan Havili who is assigned as his partner/bodyguard and he’s never seen someone as bright as him. They work together on cases and IT’S SO GOOD. I love how Donovan just slides into Jon’s life and makes all those “quirks” feel natural, like it’s not Jon’s fault and it’s okay. His psychic ability is amazing and the Mystery aspect kept me guessing. 👍🏻 This book honestly has everything I want : ✔️ Paranormal ✔️ Protective boyfriends ✔️ Found family ✔️ Explicit scenes that comes from a nice build up ✔️ MUTUAL PINING ✔️ Mystery. Oh boy. If you like a bit of Drama, relationship issues, finding yourself brouhaha & explicit scenes then this series is for you. It’s a guilty pleasure kind of read and I wasn’t able to stop from book 1 down to the last. The books can be read as standalones but it’s much better if you know all the people popping up here and there. This one is my Favorite, Felix & The Prince. All because of the Commoner/Royalty trope that just never fails to fascinate me. So Felix goes to this remote island who is famous for their Stained glass and to study it. Aside from that, he’s really trying to run away from the public as his Mom’s ( who abandoned him ) blockbuster movie is coming up as he hates being in the spotlight. There he meets Lio in one of the secret rooms he accidentally finds and from there, well. 😍😍😍 These characters feel very real and their emotions read well to me as an outsider. I just love the being stuck in that place and both of them having no other choice but to fall in love. Also the whole DRAMA of how they can make it work despite all the issues is a big part of what makes their story better.

Title : Be still my Heart ( Four Kings Kings Security series )

All the books in this series is worth a read, definitely. It’s just that I really loved Laz and Red’s side-relationship from Book 1 and so when they had their own story with Book 2 it was an instant favorite. Red is an ex navy SEAL and now working as a security detail while Laz is a fashion photographer. This book opens with Red off work as he recovers from being shot and seeing Laz doing a shoot. Then someone opens fire, clearly targeting Laz and so the whole story is the two of them in close quarters and coming to terms with their relationship. They are so sweet together! 😭 and the explicit scenes are scorching omg! The mystery part on figuring out who is plotting against Laz was cool too ; I thought it was this guy, but then it’s not until that last moment when the mastermind is revealed. 😳

Title : Breaking Magic

Author : J Brenton Parker

There’s this trope that is very hard to come by in books because of how specific it is. It’s the Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter trope. This books has it all and I couldn’t be happier. You have a magic school, the chosen one and his nemesis & a whole lot of adventure. Adam Wolfe is a ticking bomb. He is the most powerful magician of his time who doesn’t even know how to use it. He can’t use a wand, can’t maintain a spell, and when he does- it results into a catastrophe. When he almost burns down the whole school and has a group of rebels interested him + the threat of his magic being stripped away, here comes someone he never got along with FELIX ROTH. Oooohhh how I love this character. 💜 So he goes to Adam and tells him he can help with controlling his powers but they have to get Merlin’s staff. And the rest of the story is just wonderful. Ugh. Soft boys, magic, adventure & good vs evil all in one book. God. Read this one please. This book needs more love.

Author : Jill Wexler

This book is short & sweet and the right pick for a cozy sunday. Mild angst and so much fluff. This is my first bestfriends to lovers book and this one just nails it. Brett and Jordan have been friends for more than 2 decades, and yes there are times they have looked at each other in a non-platonic way ; but they both shut it down as their friendship is too important. Then Brett’s sister and brother in law dies in a car accident leaving their 4 kids to his care. Jordan helps him take care of the kids and setup himself up with this new life. Everything about this was so sweet! The domesticity and them seeing each other in different light at the right time. Just the inevitability of them being together after all those years as friends left me with all the feels. Ahhhhh~ ❤️

Air quality impacts early brain development

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have found a link between traffic-related air pollution and an increased risk for changes in brain development relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders. Their study, based on rodent models, corroborates previous epidemiological evidence showing this association.

While air pollution has long been a concern for pulmonary and cardiovascular health, it has only been within the past decade that scientists have turned their attention to its effects on the brain, said UC Davis toxicologist Pamela Lein, senior author of the study, recently published in Translational Psychiatry.

Researchers had previously documented links between proximity to busy roadways and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, but preclinical data based on real-time exposures to traffic-related air pollution was scarce to nonexistent.

Lein worked with UC Davis atmospheric scientist Anthony Wexler and first author Kelley Patten, a doctoral student in the UC Davis graduate group for pharmacology and toxicology, to develop a novel approach to study the impacts of traffic-related air pollution in real time. They set up a vivarium near a traffic tunnel in Northern California so they could mimic, as closely as possible, the experience of humans in a rodent model.

“This approach was a creative way to get at the question of what impacts air pollution has on the brain in the absence of confounding factors such as socioeconomic influences, diet, etc.,” Lein said. “It’s important to know if living close to these roadways poses a significant risk to the developing human brain.

“If it does,” Lein continues, “scientists can warn susceptible individuals, such as pregnant women — particularly those who have already had a child diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder — to take appropriate precautions to minimize risks to the health of their child’s brain.”

EARLY EXPOSURE OUTCOMES

The researchers compared the brains of rat pups exposed to traffic-related air pollution with those exposed to ?ltered air. Both air sources were drawn from the tunnel in real time.

They found abnormal growth and increased neuroinflammation in the brains of animals exposed to air pollution. This suggests that air pollution exposure during critical developmental periods may increase the risk for changes in the developing brain that are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.

“What we witnessed are subtle changes,” Patten said. “But we are seeing these effects using air pollution exposures that fall within regulatory limits. With the backdrop of other environmental and genetic risk factors in humans, this may have a more pronounced effect. This exposure also contains very fine particulate matter that isn’t currently regulated.”

In a separate study, Patten extended this exposure for 14 months to look at longer-term impacts of traffic-related air pollution and is in the process of writing up those results.

The team is also interested in what component of traffic-related air pollution is driving the neurodevelopmental outcomes.

If they can identify the culprits, Lein said, then scientists can approach legislators to develop scientifically based regulations to protect the developing human brain.

TEAM EFFORTS

UC Davis atmospheric scientist and co-author Keith Bein said that the single most challenging aspect of studying the health effects of air pollution may be replicating how, when and what people are exposed to throughout their lifetimes.

Tackling this requires creative thinking and a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including exposure engineers, atmospheric scientists, toxicologists, biologists, behaviorists and animal care specialists.

“We have managed to build a unique and talented team and taken advantage of our built environment to bring us closer than we’ve been before to achieving these objectives,” Bein said. “Increasingly, these types of efforts are required to continue advancing the field, thereby informing policymakers and stakeholders about how best to protect human health.”

Other study co-authors include: Eduardo González and Anthony Valenzuela, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine; Elizabeth Berg, UC Davis School of Medicine; Christopher Wallis, UC Davis Air Quality Research Center; Joel Garbrow, Washington University; and Jill Silverman at the UC Davis MIND Institute and School of Medicine. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
