You smiled with contentment as you finished laying the soft blankets on the bed. Lying down, you checked that the projection screen was set up just right before you dimmed the lights and turned on the fake fire nearby. The windows showed beautiful fall trees swaying in a light rainy breeze, and for a moment, you really did forget you were on Starship deep in space.
Halloween was approaching on Earth, and the whole ship buzzed with ideas of Halloween parties and costume contests. As you traveled to a distant area of space, you had time to kill, so the crew was allowed to do as they pleased.
Time to kill, also meant, the two of you could relax and have a cozy evening all to yourself. Something Jim was more than happy about.
Hearing a buzz at the door, you looked over to see it slide open, revealing Jim, clad in a cozy outfit, holding a tray brimmed with various foods and snacks.
You grinned as you locked eyes and you felt a warmth fill your chest as he walked over to the bed.
"Wow" He smiled as he looked around, noting all of the various changes you had made to give his suite the perfect autumn vibe.
"You like it?" You asked a bit uncertainly.
He smiled at you as he leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. "I love it, its perfect."
You smiled in relief, before your eyes widened a bit, seeing all of the food he had brought. You recognized old Earth Halloween candy, as well as some of your favorite sweets. There were small cakes, chips and dip, and hot chocolate complete with mini marshmallows.
"And how did I do?" He asked with a smile.
You grinned up at him, "Perfect."
He clapped his hands, "So we ready then?"
You nodded happily as you gingerly moved the tray to the middle of the bed, allowing Jim to climb in next to you. He let out a relaxed sigh as he leaned back.
Looking over his shoulder he quirked his brow. "Where did you get all of these pillows?"
You grinned, "I'm a comfort hoarder, you know this."
He chuckled, "Right."
He reached out his arm as you settled in to lean against him, hot chocolate in hand.
Grabbing a PAD he started to flick through the various movies you had downloaded for the evening.
"Ooh, we have to watch this later." He smiled as he pointed at Beetlejuice.
You nodded, "Of course."
"Hmm, but first." He stopped on a movie in the list and your eyes widened. You had not downloaded that one.
Immediately you shook your head, "Absolutely not."
He scoffed, "Why not? IT's a classic!"
"I don't care if it's a classic, I hate it!"
"Oh come on, it's not that bad!"
"IT is that bad" you chuckled "I watched it as a kid and it gave me nightmares, and it made me hate clowns."
"If we aren't watching IT then we aren't watching Hocus Pocus."
You gasped as you sat up, setting down your hot chocolate before you spilled it. "Those movies are not comparable! And Hocus Pocus is so much better!"
He shook his head stubbornly and you pouted at him, your eyes glaring playfully. He glared back, but you saw his resolve failing as his eyes drifted to the pout on your lips.
He finally let out a sigh and rested his head back. "Fine, we can watch Hocus Pocus, BUT, we have to watch a different horror movie if we can't watch IT."
You thought for a moment before nodding "Okay, fine, but nothing with clowns!"
He chuckled, grabbing you and pulling you back into his chest. He pressed a kiss to your temple "Okay, nothing with clowns."

So I decided to rewatch "A Private Little War" because I wanted to experience it again with SNW in mind but then I got to the part where Jim gets bitten and Bones takes him to the village to get treated and
Tumblr media
I'm so excited hes about to heat up a rock with a phaser, the best part of any Star Trek episode.
Tumblr media
Awesome, now Jim will be nice and warm and
Tumblr media
He heated up a second rock???? Okay two red hot rocks should be warm enough, right? Like its not even cold, its a nice sunny day--
Tumblr media
A THIRD ROCK???! HE PHASERD THREE ROCKS.
Bones, I think Jim's warm enough... he was probably warm enough after the FIRST rock.
Like thats too many rocks, this cave is now a million degrees and you've made it a terrible experience for everyone else. Heating up this many rocks is how you get caught, there was no reason for any of this.

game night ; bones
fandom: star trek
pairing: bones x reader
summary: after accidentally injuring yourself, you refuse to go to MedBay before attending a games night with the crew and your favourite grumpy (and very jealous) doctor
notes: this is bad!!! i am very sorry!!! i didn’t want to abandon it, so i forced myself to finish and it took several days, it is very disjointed, but i hope readable? let me know what you think!
important -
in this fic, the crew play pool (or billiard) but i am australian and to avoid confusion (because we probably play it differently / wrong, and i am not a professional lol) here are some notes:
the balls with the band of colour (more white) are called ‘bigs’ and the full colour balls are called ‘smalls’
you get a second shot if you sink one of your own balls
your opponent gets two shots if you sink the white ball
Tumblr media
word count: 5363 (oops)
“Shit,” you snatch your hand away from the machinery in front of you, shaking it as if the movement would rid you of the hot stinging sensation spreading through your fingers. You look at your gloves and curse again, finding all four of the material fingertips burnt through.
“Are you okay?” Clarke, one of the newer lieutenants on board, asks as he approaches your workbench. He’s very handsome, with sandy blond hair and bright green eyes, there were five people in this room alone that would sell a kidney for just one date with him. You, on the other hand, had forgotten about his existence less than ten seconds after he handed you the tool you’d asked for this morning.
You snatch the gloves off and stare at the hot pink flesh of your fingers, “Fine, just frustrated.”
He gingerly grabs your hand, turning it toward himself, “come over here, you need cold water.”
He tows you toward the large trough across the lab, where a spread of tools and parts were waiting to be washed or drying out on the nearby benchtops. You spot a small square contained with several labels reading ‘KEENSER’S LUNCH – DO NOT EAT’ in a variety of languages, and you can’t help but giggle. The little alien was yet to find out that it was best friend Mr. Scott always stealing his food.
Clarke turns on the faucet and checks that the water is cool before pulling your hand under it. You only realise then how close you are to him, and that his eyes aren’t just green but have little flecks of gold in them, and that there are several sets of eyes glaring at you from across the room.
“Thanks,” you say, though you can’t help acknowledging the fact that you were more than capable of doing this by yourself.
“I’m no doctor,” he chuckles softly, “but you should probably go to MedBay.”
Your heart feels like it flips in your chest, sending a woozy amount of blood to your head and undoubtedly turning your cheeks pink. “I-I think I’m good, but thanks again.” You pull your hand away and dry it gently on the front of your uniform.
“What’ve ya done now’?” Scotty asks, walking toward you with a comical amount of greasy fluid smeared across his face.
“Nothing, just accidentally-”
“Touched a soldering iron,” Clarke interrupts, and though you know it’s out of concern you can’t help the indignant scowl that settles between your brows.
“I’m fine,” you say.
Scotty glances at your hand, and instead of expressing concern his lips curl into a cheeky grin, “think ya need to go to MedBay, angel.”
From the corner of your eye, you see Clarke do double-take at the affectionate nickname.
“No, I’m fine,” you repeat.
“I can take her?” the lieutenant offers, at which your frown deepens.
“Can I just go back to my quarters?” you ask Scotty, “I just need a plaster.”
Scotty nods, “it’s well past ya finish time anyway.”
You smile politely at Clarke before turning back to your workstation and haphazardly untying your apron with one hand. Scotty begins packing up your tools before you can, and you know it’s his way of showing concern, but you still frown.
“I’ll see ya later, then?” he says as you turn to exit.
“Tonight?”
“Game night,” he replies, “the capt’n got that old pool table in workin’ order, remember?”
You vaguely remember being cornered by Jim yesterday afternoon after yet another lengthy shift, and being ordered to attend a night of drinks and shenanigans since the ship was going to be in friendly space for the next few days.
“Right, uh, do you know who else is coming?” you ask.
Scotty’s grin returns, “the usual.”
You narrow your eyes and open your mouth to demand he elaborate when Clarke cuts you off, “did you say a pool table? I love that game, my dad had one when I was little.”
“Oh, then you should come along lieutenant,” Scotty says, “the more the merrier.”
Your head aches with the effort that it takes not to roll your eyes. “Great,” you say, “then I’ll see you both later, now if you’ll excuse me, I need to shower.”
You reach the turbolift and step inside, thanking the universe for its speed when you arrive on the upper-most floor containing crew quarters in less than a few seconds. The familiar corridor leads you to your room, where you sigh dramatically as you kick off your shoes and wrestle out of your red shirt. Your hand stings when you step under the hot water of the shower, so you have to hold it out while you awkwardly wash your hair and body. Sitting on your bed in only a towel, you rummage through your personal medical kit for some plasters to wrap your fingers. You try desperately to recall even an ounce of your first aid training but unfortunately, there was always one huge distraction that prevented you from ever learning anything when it came to medical training. A distraction that happened to be the very doctor who was attempting to teach you.
You lay in your towel for longer than necessary, flipping through data on your PADD and absently watching the time until you decide to get dressed. Eventually you pull on a pair of denim shorts and an old Starfleet Academy shirt before snatching a hair tie from the table beside your bed and slipping into your sneakers. The crew commons are located only two floors above you, where the rec rooms resides behind the huge cafeteria and kitchen. You can hear the sounds of laughter and conversation before you even reach the end of the corridor.
“Look who finally decided to join us!” Jim exclaims the second he spots you; his steps are unsteady and his grin is wide, he’s already very tipsy.
“Hey Captain,” you giggle, “you look merry.”
Nyota bounds toward you and wraps her arms around your neck, “oh, thank goodness you’re here, I’m losing.”
Behind her you can see the pool table situated between the bar and a cluster of low, blue sofas. “Nyota Uhura losing a game? That’s unheard of.”
“I know,” she gasps, handing you a drink, “now catch up and let’s kick some butt.”
Before you can take a sip, Jim hands you a small glass of clear liquid, “first, you have to do a shot, it’s a rule.”
You roll your eyes before swigging from the little glass. It burns your tongue and the back of your throat, spreading a fire through your chest as it descends to your stomach. “Holy shit, what is that?”
He chuckles, “no idea, something Chekov picked up a few planets ago.”
You cringe and down half the bottle of your drink in an attempt to quell the burn.
“Y/N!”
You tip the bottle back down and find Clarke standing right where Nyota had been. “Hey,” your voice is raspy, still recovering from the shot.
He chuckles, “are you okay?”
“Yeah, that was just-”
“I know, the captain made us all do one when we got here.”
Jim grins and smacks a hand on Clarke’s shoulder, “you didn’t tell me you were making friends down in the engine room, angel.”
You roll your eyes once again and swap your now empty bottle with the full one in Jim’s hand, “maybe you should stop talking before I stick a pool cue up your ass, Captain.”
His eyes narrow at your sweet smile, “we’ll see who ends up with a pool cue up their ass tonight.”
“Gross,” you giggle as he turns around, and you follow him toward the pool table with Clarke in tow.
Sulu, Scotty, and Keenser are surrounding the table, arguing about whether or not Keenser was cheating while a couple of Nyota’s friends watch in amusement. Chekov is seated on one of the low sofas along with three other young lieutenants you’d only met once or twice, and Spock is standing alone by the back wall, no doubt assessing the physics of the game in front of him. Your heart practically leaps into your throat when you spot the doctor, sat on a barstool beside Spock with his arms crossed over his chest and the usual frown set between his brows.
Your feet forget how to move in coordination and you stumble forward, but Clarke is quick to catch you. His arms wrap around your shoulders and steady you before helping you upright. “Thanks,” you say, as you look up to find his green eyes much too close for the second time today.
He smiles boyishly, “you’re a little accident prone, aren’t you?”
You nod and brush yourself off, glancing over his shoulder at the stool beside Spock, now empty.
“Come on, angel, stop flirting and let’s play,” Jim calls, now in possession of the pool cue Sulu had been holding.
Keenser hands you the other cue when you reach the table, before turning back to Scotty and launching right back into their argument.
“Hey,” Clarke says, still beside you, “I’ve been meaning to ask, why does everyone keep calling you angel?”
Sulu stops in his pursuit to the bar, with a wide grin stretched across his lips “because have you ever seen anyone who looks more like they fell from heaven? She’s gorgeous.” He stops to kiss your cheek and take the empty bottle from your hand. “Another?”
You nod, “thanks, Sulu.”
“Well, that is true,” Clarke’s cheeks turn a pale shade of pink, “you are gorgeous.”
Unsure of what to say you simply smile and step up to the table, watching Jim arrange the balls inside the plastic triangle. “Are you sure you know how to play, angel?” he smirks.
“Are you sure you know how to play, Captain?”
He lines the white ball up with the chalk marker and gestures to you, “ladies first.”
You poke your tongue out at him before taking your stance and leaning over the table. As you place your hand on the felt to line up the cue, pain ripples through your fingers and you can’t help but cringe.
“Are you okay?” Clarke asks again, and you begin to wonder if those were his first words.
“I’m fine.” You regain your focus and bite your cheek to ignore the pain in your fingers, and when you draw the cue back to take the shot, you notice blood seeping through the plasters. Oops.
Despite your injury, you break the triangle perfectly and the balls scatter across the table. One finds its way into the corner pocket, eliciting a cheer from your audience of crewmates and a little squeal from yourself.
“Suck it, Kirk,” you move around the table, “smalls are mine.”
You position yourself for the next shot, stretching onto your toes and leaning halfway across the table in order to properly reach the white ball. You draw the cue back just as a figure steps into view on the other side of the table, your heart leaps once again and your aim falters. The cue hits the ball way off centre and sends it wobbling across the green felt. “Damn it.”
Jim chuckles, “what happened, angel? Your first shot was so good!” His eyes dart from you, to the doctor, and back.
“You suck,” you say, stepping back and holding the cue upright.
With everyone watching Jim’s move intently, you take the chance to glance at your fingers. Pain is pulsing steadily through your hand, nothing excruciating but certainly uncomfortable, and blood blots the white plasters.
Clarke moves to your side once again, “do you need to go to MedBay, or we can ask Dr-”
“Seriously, Clarke, I’m fine,” you say, “I don’t want to bug Dr. McCoy on his night off.” You look over at the man in question, his expression grumpier than usual as his eyes bore into you, but the moment you meet his gaze he looks away. In fact, he turns his entire body and moves toward Spock, who is standing quietly beside Nyota.
“You’re up,” Jim says, drawing your attention back to the game.
You struggle to focus on your shot, your mind replaying the doctor’s face over and over, and wondering why he could possibly be angry with you. It was strange that he hadn’t come to see you yet, to talk to you, it has been a while since you’ve all hung out together like this and you miss him.
You take your shot and somehow sink a ball, and on your second shot you manage to position the white ball in the most inconvenient place for Jim. “I think I may have underestimated you,” he says as he steps forward, wearing a smirk.
After offering Jim a brief but cheeky grin, you decide to make the first move with Leonard. Not in that way, though you did wish you could, but you decide to approach him first and find out if he really is angry with you and if so, what the hell did you do.
You first retrieve two drinks from the bar before sliding up beside him, once again seated in the bar stool beside Spock. “Hey McCoy, thirsty?”
Relief washes over you in a big hot wave when he looks up and his expression breaks into a grin. You’re positive your cheeks have turned beet red, but you don’t care, Leonard McCoy is grinning at you as if you’re the sole reason for his happiness and that’s enough to make you dizzy. Could you imagine if you actually did kiss this man, or sleep with him? You’d probably going into cardiac arrest. Good thing he’s a doctor.
“Hey, angel,” the nickname from his lips is so different than from anyone else’s, and it makes your heart thump even louder in your ears. He takes the drink from your hand and his fingers brush yours, making you wince. His face falls, immediately wondering if he had done something more than take an offered drink or if you were just uncomfortable with his touch – which hurts to think –, but then he notices your plaster-wrapped fingers.
“Y/N,” his voice is a warning, and the fact that he’s using your real name is enough to make you cower... and turn you on a little bit, but that’s something to unpack later.
You hide your injured hand behind your back, “Doctor.”
He stands from the stool and easily towers over you as you begin retreating toward the pool table. “What did you do to your hand?”
At that moment you hear your name called from behind and thank the universe for its timing. “Nothing, Doctor,” you reply, “now if you’ll excuse me.”
You turn quickly and begin hurriedly assessing the arrangement on the table before electing to stay on the side of the table with your back to the grumpy doctor. You bend over and try not to cringe when you position your injured hand on the felt, but the pain is only brief before you realise that you’re fully bent over right in front of Leonard. You’ve dreamt about this more times than you care to admit.
Deciding that you’ve already dug your grave, you might as well lie in it too, you arch your back and stretch a little further, feeling your shorts ride up your thighs. You draw the cue back and take the shot, sending one of your balls and one of Jim’s sailing into opposite corner pockets.
Jim chuckles, “thanks for that, angel.”
“Shut up,” you mutter, as you step around the table.
You can see Leonard now, and his face is a mask of practiced calm, but you know him too well to believe it. That man is undoubtedly flustered. You try not to giggle audibly as you lean down to take your second shot, but the distracting doctor clouds your mind and your aim is completely ruined. The white ball sails across the table without hitting a single other ball.
“Fuck!” you exclaim, at which everyone laughs.
Jim smirks, “what’s wrong, Y/N? Distracted?”
It takes all of your self-control not to throw the pool cue javelin-style across the table. “Get on with it, Kirk.”
You want to talk to Leonard again, but you can feel the plasters on your fingers growing damp with blood.  He was always weird when you got injured, almost panicky despite being a doctor who deals with literal catastrophes on almost a daily basis. You didn’t doubt he would shred you for hurting yourself and not going straight to MedBay, though in your defence you definitely didn’t think the burns were bad enough to blister and bleed.
“Did you want a few pointers?” Clarke asks, almost startling you with how suddenly he’d appeared beside you.
You frown, “with what?”
“The game,” he gestures toward the pool table.
“Oh, uh,” the lieutenant looks like a puppy dog, with wide eyes and a small pout, practically begging you to find him attractive. There are two women across the room wearing matching piercing glares, and you can’t help feeling obliged to accept his help. “Sure.”
He beams with self-confidence and follows you around the table as Jim announces that it’s once again your turn. Thankfully, most of the group has begun to lose interest in the game, settling back into the sofas or going to retrieve more drinks. You can even see Chekov and Sulu playing an intense game of Jenga at the bar.
“Okay, so you want to get a little lower, get your eyes in line with the shot,” Clarke says in your ear, and you start to wonder if this man has any sense of personal space. “Relax a little, you shouldn’t have to arch your back so much.”
You can’t stop yourself from giggling as it bubbles up, but Clarke pays no mind as he practically smothers you with his body to ‘help’ your game.
“Come on, angel,” Jim chuckles, “stop flirting and get on with it.”
Your head snaps toward him and if looks could kill, Jim would be a pile of ash on the ground. At the same time you look toward your captain, Clarke moves your arm to take the shot, since he’s practically controlling your body right now. The aim is way off with you once again distracted, and the white ball haphazardly knocks into a few other balls before sinking into a pocket itself.
You stand abruptly and take several steps away from Clarke. “Damn you, Jim, that’s completely your fault,” you say, pointing at the table.
“Hey,” he puts one hand up in surrender while the other holds his drink, “there were two people controlling that shot and neither of them were me.”
“I’m sorry, Y/N,” Clarke says, “I didn’t realise you weren’t ready, that’s totally my fault.”
You wave a hand, “don’t worry about it.”
Eager to shake the lieutenant you rush to the bar to get another drink, where you coincidentally find your favourite doctor. “Bones,” you greet him again, holding your injured hand behind your back.
He nods, handing you a bottle before taking an unnecessarily large step back, “so- uh, you and that lieutenant, huh? Jim didn’t tell me you were seeing someone.”
You begin shaking your head before he’s even finished his sentence, “no, no, I- um, I’m not dating that guy, at all. Actually, I barely know him, he just started kind of following me around today, and it’s really weird but I’m too polite to tell him to leave me alone, that’s it.”
Bones frowns, “oh, well- I mean, it’s not really any of my business, so you don’t have to explain yourself to me.”
“Oh,” you nod once, “noted, sorry.”
His words weren’t cruel but you couldn’t help from hearing a bitter undertone. Something about the way he spoke made you feel stupid, and almost irrelevant, like he asked you a question just to be polite and there you were ranting and raving like an oversharing child.
“Wait, Y/N, I didn’t-” his words are cut short, but by what you don’t know as you were already halfway back to the pool table and halfway through the drink you’d only just received.
Jim quickly notices your frown and stops you before you can get to where the white ball is. “Are you okay? What did he say to you?” he asks.
“Nothing, I was just rambling,” you reply, “and I could tell he was getting annoyed so I left him alone.” You wave your hand dismissively, which somehow actually gets Jim to shut up, because he freezes mid-thought and doesn’t move to stop you from walking past.
You drain the rest of the bottle in your hand and discard it on a nearby table before getting ready for your shot. You lean over the table and rest the cue on your hand, the slight amount of alcohol you’ve consumed is only making your aim a little wonky, but you confidently draw the cue and strike the white ball. Shockingly, two of your own balls manage to find the same pocket and sink with a satisfying clunk.
“Did you see that?” you exclaim, turning to Jim only to find him staring blankly at the tabletop. “Are you absolutely stunned at my incredibly skills?”
“Damnit, Y/N,” Leonard says, startling you as he appears beside you and grabs your hand.
You wince as the sting from the pressure and movement ripples up your arm, and only then do you notice that the plasters are completely soaked with blood. “Oh,” you frown and inspect your hand, “that’s weird.”
“What the hell have you done?” he pulls your hand closer to his face and gently prods your middle finger.
You gasp, “ouch!”
The doctor’s frown deepens, and he turns to his best friend, “game’s over, she’s coming with me.”
Despite the situation, Jim still smirks, “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” He winks as Bones rolls his eyes and tows you out of the room.
You’re a little too scared to speak as he rushes you down the hall and into the turbolift, but as the doors slide closed you realise that he’s basically been holding your hand this whole time. You try desperately to rationalise with yourself and remind yourself that he’s a doctor and your friend, and he’s just doing his job, but the stupid butterflies in your stomach continue to flutter restlessly.
“How did you do it?” he asks, his frown finally softening.
He’s standing right beside you, touching you in several places and your brain struggles to function. “When I fell from heaven?” you ask, and you’re not sure if it’s the alcohol or nerves, but you start giggling.
He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, but you can still see a tiny smirk underneath his hand. “No, angel, I’m not hitting on you right now, I need to know how you hurt your hand.”
“You’re not hitting on me right now, but you will later?”
Bones freezes, his expression torn between frustration and amusement as he considers whether or not the alcohol is influencing your words or not. “If you tell me how you hurt yourself,” he says, “I’ll flirt with you later.”
You grin, and it almost knocks all the air out of his lungs, “promise?”
“I promise.”
The lift’s doors ease open and you recognise the familiar MedBay as Doctor McCoy leads you toward it. It’s quieter than usual and you realise then that it’s actually been a while since anything had gone wrong or blown up. Jim really is getting good and being captain.
Leonard sits you on an empty bed, a hand on each shoulder, as he drags one of the medical carts over with his foot. “Do you want anaesthetic?” he asks.
You scoff, “it’s just a burn, Doctor, I’m not going into labour.”
He chuckles as he begins to unwrap the blood soaked plasters, “so it’s a burn?”
“Yep, soldering iron.”
“Why weren’t you wearing gloves?” his frown returns, “I’m going to kill Scotty, if he-”
In your lightheaded stupor, you press your free hand to his cheek and whisper, “I was wearing gloves.”
“What? Then how did you-”
“Don’t know,” you shrug, “this stupid part has been breaking every a week for almost three months, and every time I have to fix it, it just gets more and more stubborn. It doesn’t want to fuse together.”
“What part?” he asks as he sets the bloody wraps aside.
You glance down at your hand and see nothing but swollen pink flesh and blood; if you were sober, you’d probably have passed out by now. “One of the little filtering chambers from the main deuterium pipeline.”
“Deuterium?” he repeats, angrier than before, “Damnit, Y/N.”
The next thing you know, he’s pressing you back until you’re lying on the bed. A nurse hurries over at his call and then there’s a hypo in your neck. The room starts to blur, but the doctor remains in perfect focus as you fight your heavy eyelids, willing yourself to stay awake.
“It’s okay, angel, you’ll only be out for a minute,” he brushes your hair off your face as you finally lose the fight with the anaesthesia.
Your hand still hurts when you wake up, and you have to blink a few times to get your eyes to focus. The spinning in your head hasn’t stopped and when you sit up to see the grumpy doctor, you still want to giggle. “Hey Bones,” you emphasise his nickname, and you can swear you saw his scowl falter.
“You practically poisoned yourself,” he shakes his head as he carefully packs his equipment away, “deuterium is deadly in the best of cases, but in the bloodstream? You’d have been dead in a day if you didn’t bleed out first. Did it not concern you that the blisters were bleeding? I mean, sure blisters bleed occasionally but not that much, angel.”
Your desire to giggle is dampened and you swing your legs over the side of the bed so you can shuffle closer to the doctor. “I’m sorry,” you say, “I honestly didn’t think about the deuterium contamination, which makes a lot of sense because the filtering chambers are usually one solid piece, not two halves, so whoever installed that is going to get their asshole rip-”
Bones’ laughter stops your rant, and you’re forced to marvel at just how gorgeous this man really is.
“If I knew it was serious, I would have come straight to you,” you say as he helps you off the bed. Your feet are only a little unsteady and your head still dizzy, but that you blame on the ridiculously handsome man in front of you.
“I told you it was serious,” a voice calls from the corridor, and you turn to find Clarke entering the MedBay.
“Great,” Bones mutters, dropping something metal onto the metal tray and making a loud clang before wheeling the cart away.
Clarke walks right up to you and grabs your hand, “how are you feeling?”
“Fine,” you pull your hand back, “like I’ve been telling you all night.”
He chuckles, but it’s awkward, “you’re lucky Dr. McCoy is so good at his job.”
You don’t see it, but you hear Bones scoff, and that’s when your foggy brain finally manages to put two and two together. You almost gasp, but quickly mask it with a deep breath. He’s… jealous.
“He is the single best person aboard this ship,” you say, trying to ignore the warmth pooling in your cheeks. If it wasn’t for the alcohol still coursing through your blood and probably a little of the anaesthetic, you know you’d never have the guts to be so forward.
“The single best?” Clarke asks. You almost feel sorry for the guy, attempting to remain light-hearted as if he could convince himself that the way he saw you looking at the doctor was something platonic.
“Single best,” you repeat, at which Bones can’t help but smirk.
Clarke chuckles awkwardly again before gesturing toward the turbolift, “did you want to go back? The others are still playing and I’m sure they’ll be excited to see you’ve survived.”
“I guess,” you look back at Bones, “are you coming?”
He nods, “yeah, I’ll just finish packing up here. You two go ahead.”
Clarke tugs on your hand and you reluctantly follow him into the corridor and toward the lift. The doors open and you step inside, subtly pulling your hand out of his and trying to create more of a distance between the two of you.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asks again.
You sigh, “yes, I am. I just-” he looks like a puppy dog, and you almost feel ungrateful for what you’re about to say. “Clarke, you’re really cool, and I’m sorry if I have completely misread the situation and if what I’m about to say is totally wrong, but I’m just not into you the way you want me to be.”
His face falls, and guilt washes over you, but then the doors of the lift begin to beep angrily as you stand between them preventing them from closing.
“Y/N, I-”
“I’m sorry,” you interrupt him and step back into the corridor, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
The doors close and the lift begins its ascent. You take half a second to swallow your guilt before turning around and practically running back to the MedBay. Bones is almost exactly where you left him, though instead of cleaning up the mess he’d made while helping you, he was leaning against the bench with his face in his hands and letting out a long sigh.
“Am I that exhausting?” you ask.
He startles, but a smile quickly breaks across his face when he sees you, “you scared me, angel.”
“Sorry,” you cross the room as you speak, “I just couldn’t leave you to clean up after me, it didn’t seem fair.”
He chuckles, but its short, “what about your boyfriend? I don’t want to ruin-”
“Gross, no.”
“No?” he frowns.
You shake your head, “seriously, no, he’s not my type.”
“You have a type?” his lips quirk into a smirk.
“Yep,” you’re standing beside him now, facing him and leaning your hip on the bench, “I prefer brunettes.”
He rubs a hand down his face, as if trying to wipe away his grin, “well, I’m sure there are plenty of willing brunette lieutenants down in engineering.”
“Not my type either,” you say, unabashedly studying the doctor’s profile as you stand so close.
He chuckles, properly, and it makes your stomach flip, “so lieutenants aren’t your type?”
“Not that part,” you reply, “you said ‘willing’ but my type is more unwilling. You know, the avoidant, sarcastic, grumpy type.”
He sighs again, as if it’s taking all of his strength to remain composed, but he finally turns to you and you can feel his breath on your neck as he speaks. “Is that so?”
You nod, “yep, and you know what else?”
You’re both leaning in, and the air between you is electric. “What else, angel?”
“I’m a sucker for doctors.”
That’s enough for Leonard. He closes the distance before you can take a breath and presses his mouth against yours. It’s rushed, but sweet, and your bodies snap together like two magnets. Your arms wrap around his neck as his circle your waist and squeeze, making your heart race impossibly fast. When you pull apart, reluctantly, your vision blurs and your head spins, and you realise that the only reason your still standing is thanks to Leonard.
“I’m a sucker for accident prone engineers,” he whispers.
You giggle, “is that so?”
He kisses you again, several times, before kissing each of your cheeks and moving your bodies so that he is trapping you against the bench, turning your giggles into almost uncontrollable laughter.
“Did you still want to go back to the others?” he asks, pressing his body against yours in the most delicious way.
“I can think of about ten other things we could do,” you bite your lip.
“Really?” he kisses you again, “because I can think of about a hundred.”
END.

Christopher Pike: You Saved Me
Tumblr media
Imagine Christopher Pike saving you from imminent death, forming a father-daughter bond with you:
"Help Me! Someone! Please!" I couldn't contemplate what was happening, only the pain that was burning through my lungs as my screams emanated within the air. My nails violently digging deeper into the earth, my body weight continuing to pull me closer to my doom.
There isn't much I remember before this, only how I was on my way home from school when something threw me with great strength, it wasn't a person, no, it felt like the world had shook so strongly that I simply shook too. It's a little much for me to try to understand, all I am currently focused on is survival.
The world suddenly felt hot, much hotter than normal, and muggy; I can feel the humidity dripping along my skin. The air has turned suffocating, making me gasp like a fish that is forced to breathe oxygen when dragged out of the water. I'm hanging along an edge, a cliff that wasn't there moments before God's wrath broke, but now it looks deep enough to take me to the other side of the world.
My species has many human features, but also many animalistic ones. For one, I have claws, big and long like that of a jaguar, they aid me in clinging to the eroding soil. The roar of the panicked people is amplified by pumping adrenaline, it doesn't help that the shouts are muffled with the sound of my own heartbeat bursting through my body.
I can feel my grasp slipping, the ground is moist and soggy, almost seeming to melt from underneath my hands. People are stomping and screaming, I'm still not sure what is going on, all I know is that the adults are confused as well. I've kept my eyes closed, fearful that I will see destruction in place of my home. My limbs are aching, my arms feel like they are being torn out of their sockets, I try to lift myself up in vain.
I scream out for help once more, though I fear no one can hear me. Just as my body fails me, just as my hands finally release and my mind accepts elimination... A hand tightly wraps around one of my wrists. It's a strange hand, it feels familiar, but alien at the same time. My body hanging limply, I fear I don't even have the energy to look at my savior, but they care not, dragging me up and away from the cliff. I'm wrapped in a warm embrace, the type that reminds me of my father when he comes home after a long business trip. I want to look at him, to thank him endlessly, but my conscious mind is quickly slipping into a dream state.
The man tries to awaken me, he shakes my body, yelling at me to open my eyes before giving up. He picks me up in his arms, protectively sheltering my body from the chaos around us, tapping something on his chest and beginning to talk to someone; the conversation was short and hurried.
I want to see him, I want to see the stranger who saved me when all else had left me to die. My eyelids feel heavy, but I manage to open them for a few seconds. The man is young, he reminds me a lot of my dad, except this person looks fearful, but stoic; I don't know how to describe it other than he looks strong. He has brown hair that is slightly graying at the sides with random stripes littering the rest of his head; he looks too young to be graying, but I can see on his face that he has the years of stress built up. I want to hug him, to say thank you, but before I can do any of that we are beamed aboard what I assume to be a star ship.
I try to stay awake, but as a large amount of people begin to rush forward, my consciousness finally slips away, my body drifting into a deep slumber; one which I hope to awaken from soon.
___
I can't hear anything, but I can feel something. It's warm and comforting, it makes me feel safe, it feels fatherly. My eyes fluttered open for a moment before immediately regretting their decision and slamming shut, the bright lights burning, it felt and looked like a searing white flame. They flutter open a few more times before finally adjusting to the light.
I glance around the room, it looks like a med bay, but it's very different from the ones I am used to. It's much colder, it feels unwelcoming, but at the same time I still feel normal, as though this sterile environment is warmer than the two suns of my home. I finally turn my head and look at the person, the person who dragged me from my doom and brought me to safety. He looks a lot more tired, his face worn with stress, and his slicked hair is somehow both clean but messy.
I sit up slowly, careful as I pull my small hand from his. Not careful enough apparently, I sadly startled him awake, his deep brown eyes immediately focusing on me. I freeze, I can't quite remember how to react, but he doesn't seem to mind because a relieved smile spreads across his exhausted features. I relax slightly, he doesn't seem as scary as I expected.
_______
Pike's POV:
We had beamed down to this plant based on negotiations for some trade deal between this species and another. It was supposed to be a simple in and out, but the other species decided they were done negotiating. The planet was fired upon by their war ships, detrimental damage was done, Discovery was about to beam me up when I heard a jarring scream amid the panic. The scream was young and fearful, it sounded like a child, and I simply felt like I couldn't allow myself to leave until I found them.
I order everyone else to be beamed up before running off in search of the voice, I hear Burnham yell out in protest, but she gets cut off as she is transported.
They stopped, the chaos seemed eerily quiet, I'm about to give up when I heard the last weak scream, they sounded defeated. I scramble to the spot, fearful I might be too late, but then I spot them. This person had been thrown over the cliff, only one hand managing to hold them up, I can see their claws extended and ripping into the ground, a last ditch effort to stay alive.
I can see them giving up, their hand slowly releasing, but I lunge forward, my hand grasping onto their small wrist. Gazing at the person, I am met with the view of an exhausted child, seemingly no older than 10, her eyes are closed and I'm afraid I might still lose her.
Roughly pulling her up, her tired form collapsing against me, I quickly grasp her face, trying to see if her eyes have opened yet, but they remain closed. I shout at her, trying to get any reaction, but I still receive none. I hastily speak into my badge, ordering both of us to be beamed up and to have medical staff at the ready.
_______
The girl has been out for a while, they had to induce a coma for some reason, they tried to explain it to me, but my mind is too jumbled at the moment to understand any of their medical jargon.
As soon as I had been beamed up, we immediately warped out of there, the federation wouldn't allow us to interfere in the battle, and I had just gotten word yesterday that this little girl's species had been slaughtered. I'm not sure if there were any survivors, or if any others managed to escape the initial barrage, all I know is that I am happy I managed to save her.
I've been waiting for her to wake up, I need to know that she is alright; I don't know why, but I feel like I need to take care of her. It's a weird feeling.
_______
I had come in early today, our only trip had me sending some crew members down to collect samples from a planet, so all was calm. I took that spare time and went to the med bay, the girl was still asleep, I've taken to addressing her as Katya. It's a weird name, sure, but it kind of matches her in that she has claws like a cat, and that she for some reason feels like the only pure thing left from the massacre.
I held her hand as I fell asleep, my brain was beginning to view her as a daughter. I tried to put some space and maintain an objective view of the matter, but that clearly didn't last long.
I'm pulled from my dream when I feel movement, I quickly open my eyes, only to be met with a surprising view. She was awake, after two weeks of unconsciousness she was finally awake! At first she seemed on edge when she noticed me, but after surveying me for a few moments she seemed to ease up. A smile was upon my face, knowing that she was okay.
"Hello there." My voice is calm, my tone could almost be described as soft. I don't know where this side of me is coming from, I'm a nice person sure, but I can't quite remember ever being like this towards anyone. I feel protective, but also an intense need to comfort, I want her to be okay, I need her to be okay.
Her eyes widen slightly, I worry I might've upset her, but those worries disappear when a small smile forms on her face.
"Hi." Her voice is hesitant but steady, she seems like she is at a loss for words.
"My name is Christopher Pike, I'm the captain of this star ship. Can you tell me your name and what you remember?" I try not to rush, but I need to know what she remembers, I need to know if I need to tell her about the attack.
"I remember shouts and screams, the world was shaking worse than our most terrible quakes. I-I was hanging, I almost let go, but you saved me. I don't remember anything else." Her voice trembled slightly throughout the sentence, and her eyes adopted a far away look. I sigh, unsure of how to tell this young girl that her entire species might very well be extinct and that she was the only known survivor.
"Don't worry, I know." Her voice broke through my thoughts, I looked at her in confusion.
"I know they're gone... I can't hear them anymore." Her voice grows heavy, her eyes drifting down as a glaze washes over them; I spend a few more moments in confusion before finally understanding. Her species all shared a weak mind-link, everyone on her planet had their thoughts running through the others heads, only it was in the back of their mind and sounded more like static. Poor girl, this silence must be awful.
"Well I'm not going anywhere, come on, let's go explore." I don't know what has gotten into me. I'm a captain, I don't have time to show a kid around my star ship. Yet, at the same time, I want to treat this girl like she's my own.
She wears a startled expression before curiosity grows in her eyes. She grasps my outstretched hand and allows me to pull her up. Her first few steps are shaky, but that is understandable after her weeks of bed rest.
We're about to head out the doors when I realize she stopped. I turn around in confusion, but she speaks first.
"You saved me, thank you." Before I can reply she jumps forward and hugs me, I'm stunned for a moment, hesitantly wrapping my arms around her small form. I pull away, giving her a smile, ruffling her already messy hair. I release her, this fatherly protection building up in my chest. I walk to the doors with a wide smile on my face, motioning to the never ending hallways.
"Let's go explore."

I sat down and noted everything that I've posted to A03 and not here and it's quite a bit so I'm thinking tomorrow I may start slowly cross-posting here.
I've been absent from here for aaaages so I'll forgo the tags for now cause I'm so painfully aware of how long it's been (oh god two years) but if you're reading this and wanna be tagged feel free to comment and let me know! It's masses of McCoy, a sprinkling of Kirk, and some Kennex as well.
McCoy really got the lions share.
I figure I'll finish The Arrangement first (four parts to post) and go from there, but I'm wildly tempted to post my current favourite here tonight. Maybe I'll crumble and post it soon, maybe I'll fall asleep immediately after some Stardew. Who knows? Not me.

On some level, they'd always known...
Prompt to self: What if, in the end, it wasn't all that surprising? Just a quick drabble I needed to get out of my head. Haven't written anything in years and feel rusty AF. - - - Bones huffed a little laugh to himself, shaking his head in thought. Swallowing his last sip of whiskey, Jim shot him a mildly quizzical look from his end of the couch as he placed his glass down on the table. The doctor looked at him appraisingly, a small smile tugging at one corner of his mouth. "Jim...I love you" He said it with the ease and conviction of having said it a million times before. Except for the fact that this was the first time he'd ever said it to the now-beaming man sitting across from him. Jim's smile was bright, his eyes shining from an untold number of emotions. "I love you too, Bones" He replied, his smile growing impossibly larger as he rushed forward.
Warm hands bracketed Bones' stubbled jaw as Jim proceeded to earnestly kiss the breath out of him. The captain pulled away a moment later, nipping at the doctor's lip with heated passion, the corner of his eyes still crinkled with the grin that hadn't left his face. "How long?"
He asked. Bones shrugged. "Feels like forever at this point. Probably since the Academy." Jim threw his head back with laughter. "Wow. We're really fucking stupid, aren't we?" Bones nodded in bemused agreement. "Clearly." He replied, then fixed the pain-in-the-ass-love-of-his-life with a primal look that suddenly took the younger man's breath away with anticipation. "Guess we better make up for lost time then." Jim nodded eagerly, already climbing into the doctor's lap. "Hell yeah."

I’m once again returning to do god’s work by bringing you delightful moments from Spock’s World by Diane Duane.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Spock was bent over [the Science Station], making some adjustment. ‘Readout now,’ he said, straightening and looking over his shoulder at the large, shaggy-fringed rock that was sitting in the center seat. Some of those glittering fringes stroked the open circuitry of the communicator controls in the seat’s arm. ‘Point nine nine three,’ said a scratchy voice from the voder box mounted on the rock’s back. ‘A nice triple sine.’ ‘Nice?’ said Spock. Jim raised an eyebrow: you could have used Spock’s tone of voice to dry out a martini.” End ID]
There’s a Horta crewman on the Enterprise now and they’re great!
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Still working on her doctoral thesis, Jim thought. Uhura was busy working on improving universal translator theory, mostly by taking the old theory to pieces and putting it back together in shapes that were causing a terrible furor in academic circles on various planets. Jim vividly remembered one night quite a long time ago when he had asked Uhura exactly how she was going about this. She had told him, for almost an hour without stopping, and in delighted and exuberant detail, until his head was spinning with phoneme approximations and six-sigma evaluations and the syntactic fade and genderbend and recontextualization and linguistic structural design and the physics of the human dextrocerebral bridge. The session had left Jim shaking his head, thoroughly disabused of the idea (and ashamed of how long he had held it) that Uhura was simply a sort of highly trained switchboard operator.” End ID]
Uhura continues to be a total badass and is amazing at what she does.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: Chatroom title in all caps: “COMMON ROOM OPINION, INFORMED AND NON- RANTING AND RAVING PERMITTED NAMES NOT NECESSARY” Regular text: “It was one of the places he came to find out what his crew was thinking. Messages did not have to be attributed to a name or terminal, but they could not be private. The office of the common room system operator rotated through the crew, offered to various members on the strength of their psych profiles in areas like calm reaction to stress and anger. The common room syops tended to be closemouthed and dependable, the kind of person that others refer to as ‘a rock.’ (Once it had actually been Naraht, to the amusement of just about everyone.) Here tempers could flare, awful jokes be told safely, suspicions be aired, rumors be shot down. The common room was sometimes a peaceful place, sometimes a powderkeg. Jim never ignored it.” End ID]
The Enterprise has a dumpster fire chat room that has just as much shitposting and vitriol as twitter.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Jim bowed over her free hand. ‘It’s been too long,’ he said. ‘It’s good to be back,’ Amanda said. ‘And in the middle of a party as well.’ She looked a little wry. ‘A little entertainment will be pleasant before the deluge.’ Sarek’s eyes flicked to Kirk, a considering look. ‘My wife speaks figuratively,’ he said, ‘in the tradition of her people. Deluges are not common on Vulcan.’ ‘My husband speaks circumspectly,’ Amanda said, just as dryly, ‘in the tradition of his.’” End ID]
Amanda and Sarek are as charming as ever.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Jim was mildly surprised to see that to his other rank tags and decorations, McCoy had added a small, understated IDIC. ‘If I didn’t know you better,’ he said, ‘I’d think you were going native. When did you get that?’ ‘Today in the gift shop, when you were looking at the snowball paperweights with Mount Seleya in them. Tackiest things I ever saw.’ ‘Yes,’ Spock said; ‘they were imported from Earth.’ ‘You be quiet. We can’t let these people leave the Federation, Jim. At least not until they teach us how to make tasteful souvenirs.’” End ID]
Just this.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “There was Sreil, the burly, brown-haired biologist from the Academy, and T’Madh, a little bright-eyed woman of great age and curiosity, a computer programmer; and her son Savesh, who when asked what he did, said, ‘I am a farmer,’ with a sort of secret satisfaction that hinted he thought his job better than any of the more technical ones that the people around him held. Jim had to smile; the thought of a Vulcan farmer was slightly funny, even though there naturally had to be some. But the image of a Vulcan in coveralls, chewing on a stalk of hay, kept coming up and having to be repressed.” End ID]
I love Savesh the Vulcan farmer!
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “’Jim,’ he said, ‘the best translation of nehau would be an old word: “vibes.” The feeling-in-your-bones that something gives you. It’s highly subjective.’ ‘Right. Go on, Savesh.’ ‘Well, Captain, I have heard numerous Vulcans say that losing the Federation and the Earth people would be no particular loss, because they had bad nehau, and that could not fail to affect us sooner or later.. But I must tell you that I find your nehau not objectionable at all; pleasant, even.’ End ID]
Vulcan wanting to leave the Federation because the ~vibes~ are off.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “His grasp of dialect and idiom as amazing for anybody, off-planet or on. He once reduced the President of the United States—then a ceremonial post, but one much loved by the people who lived within the old borders—to tears of laughter at a state dinner, by delivering a learned dissertation on computer data storage technology in a flawless Texan accent. The lady was later heard to propose an amendment to the Constitution to allow off-worlders to hold high public office, so that she could have him for her running mate in the next election.” End ID]
I would give anything to hear Sarek do a perfect Texas accent.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “—but when Amanda became annoyed over what she perceived as his smugness about being right, her eyes would flash and she would become splendidly insulting, usually in bizarre Anglish idiom that Sarek found as refreshing as it was annoying. She caused him to laugh out loud for the first time in many years when she told him, after a disagreement over the translation of the word for war, that he should only grow headfirst in the ground like a turnip. Later that month, when he was right about something again and made the mistake of not immediately down-playing it, she issued him with a formal malediction, wishing that the curse of Mary Malone and her nine blind orphan children might pursue him so far over the hills and the seas that God Almighty couldn’t find him with a radio telescope. Sarek laughed so hard at that that he entirely lost his breath, and Amanda panicked and started to give him cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which was useless, because his heart was somewhere other than the spot on which she was pounding. It took him nearly an hour to recover: he kept laughing. He had never been cursed like that before, not even by union leaders, and it was very refreshing.” End ID]
This dynamic is perfect, no notes.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “The next night they sat in the Rec Deck again, in the middle of a large impromptu party that was going on around them by way of celebration. The sense of relief in the ship was palpable. A group of about a hundred crewfolk, mostly human, had surrounded Spock earlier in the evening and sung ‘For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow,’ accompanied by twenty crewmen on kazoos. Sarek had been given champagne.” End ID]
I really hope the TOS Enterprise has crew performances like on Next Gen. This kazoo band needs to be heard! Also, I can perfectly picture Spock’s annoyed-but-tolerant expression as he resigns himself to the kazoo serenade.
Thank you @dianeduane for making me laugh!

Sigh maybe in another life Jim Kirk would’ve made a nice top model
ACTUALLY SCRATCH THAT. Spock would be a sought after top model his sheer cuntiness, height, slenderness would all make him soo perfect. His ability to make any garment look absolutely amazeballs would lead to great things.
Kirk was told by many of his friends and acquaintances that his sheer charm and ability to serve needed to be brought to the attention of fashion designers unfortunately he was gifted with rocking pecs and a short torso but nonetheless for the fun of it he tried out at a top modeling agency in San Francisco that was known for birthing the biggest models out there. A long shot he thought but worth one.
It was all over the news about a young Vulcan taking modeling by storm being desperately sought out by modeling agency across the galaxy but settled on the one in San Francisco. After all it seemed to be the logical choice seeing the amount of top models came out of it absolutely victorious in conquering every quadrant.
Christopher Pike in this is a modeling agent taking Spock as his top student at this point he wasn’t even a student he was practically an upcoming empire but he noticed the new comer. Short torso.. height.. not too tall.. to any modeling agent they would scoff, what a joke! Not Pike, no. He saw absolute potential in this charming young new face in the business. The absolute gall this boy had intrigued Pike. He saw his interactions with the other models and no other new faces complimented each other better than those two..

Different styles of Triumvirate <3
Read below for me being super autistic about Star Trek (and still shots)
Did that work? Idk we’ll see. Anyway different styles of Triumvirate V V V V V
Tumblr media
TOS Triumvirate, my bbgirls <3 I don’t do likeness very much so this looks kind of awful lmao but I had fun doing it bc I got to stare at pics of Them. I hate the way I did the line art and I want to burn it but I don’t hate it enough to redo it lol I’m sorry
Tumblr media
AOS Triumvirate, I am a TOS girly 4ever but I actually did like the AOS movies even if I had some criticisms (if I don’t “um ackshually ☝️🤓” every little Star Trek thing I see my internal organs will shutdown) I thought all the actors were fun but I kept getting distracted by how BLUE Chris Pine’s eyes are good heavens. I was also a bit…disappointed that Chris Pine is a lot slimmer than TOS Kirk bc TOS Kirk has a more similar body type to me and it made me feel good but that’s more of a personal thing. I really did like these movies and I thought all the actors did a pretty good job playing young versions of the characters. I actually haven’t seen the third one yet but wow did I love Into Darkness (as y’all know if you saw that animation I made immediately after watching it)
Tumblr media
I call this Fanon Triumvirate because it represents the way I see Triumvirate represented in fan art often. I attempted to make it a sort of combo of AOS and TOS with a couple more Fanon aspects like scruffy Spock (+ Spock’s blue eyeshadow).
Tumblr media
My Triumvirate! I might finish this with lighting, background, etc bc omg look at them!! My guys!! I have a lot of my own preference here. Spock has longer hair (no microbangs, sorry lesbians 😭), I like Jim to have lovely styled hair and nice lips, Bones looks especially exhausted, etc I like to change up their designs often but I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from fan works and TOS but recently mixed more AOS in since watching the movies 🫶 I also like for Jim’s uniform to be a lil baggy bc I see that in Fanon sometimes and I think it’s cute.

dr. dreamy ; bones
fandom: star trek
pairing: bones x reader
summary: it’s been a while since you’ve been laid, and it’s starting to affect your mood so jim offers his help before quickly realising that you’re still hung up on a mysterious ‘mr. dreamy’ from your academy days... but he soon finds out that the man you’ve been in love with for the past five years is, in fact, the enterprise’s best doctor
notes: did somebody say hyper-fixation? also, if you haven’t noticed already, i have a favourite formula... i wrote this while sick, so apologies if its crap, but let me know what you think!
warnings: swearing and horny
Tumblr media
word count: 4173
The turbolift halts when it reaches the deck on which the upper-most access to the warp core is located. Your steps are sluggish, and the lace on your left boot is about five strides from falling untied, but you don’t really care to fix it even as you feel your boot go lax. Your heel begins to slip in and out of place just as you reach the door to one of the larger maintenance rooms.
“What’s got your knickers in a twist?” Scotty asks as soon as he sees you.
You shrug, “just tired.”
“Too tired to remember where you’re s’pposed to be?” he stops you from picking up the spare pair of gloves from the bench, “first aid trainin’?”
A vague memory fights its way to the front of your mind, and you recall being ordered by Jim to attend the annual first aid training course that at least two crew members from each division were required to attend.
“Why me?” you sigh, “why can’t you be the first aid officer, or-or Ayden?” The young brunette lieutenant who was half-concealed behind a large metal tank pokes his head out.
“Because,” Scotty says, dismissing Ayden with a wave of his hand, “the capt’n requested you specifically, and I know he’s a bit of bastard sometimes but he’s still our capt’n.”
“He just wants me to suffer because he has to,” you grumble.
He chuckles as he grips your shoulders and physically turns you back toward the door, “I doubt you’ll be sufferin’ much, lassie, I heard the CMO himself is runnin’ this one.”
Your feet forget their steps and you stumble before catching yourself on the doorjamb. “W-Why is Bones running it? Isn’t he busy? He never does this kind of thing,” you say as you turn back to face Scotty.
He shrugs, “capt’n’s orders, I guess. Now go before you’re late.”
You drag your feet out the door, down the corridor, and into the lift once again, all the while muttering about all the ways you intend on getting back at Jim.
You met Jim on your second day at Starfleet Academy and were almost immediately joined at the hip, being one of the only women on campus who was immune to the man’s charm. Well, not entirely immune at first, but you’ve definitely built it up over the years. It took a whole twelve months before you met his other other half, the doctor, and no matter how many years you spend with that man, you will never be immune to Leonard McCoy. From the moment you met him, you knew you were doomed, though you still tried desperately to deny it and got pretty good at controlling your body’s reactions to him. Your thoughts, however, not so much.
For almost two whole years, you managed to keep your crush under wraps, even though it was quite literally crushing you. It was one drunken night when you finally confessed to Jim, not quite revealing the identity of the man you were in love with but giving him enough information that he actually comforted you. That was when you realised it was a lost cause, and you were condemned to pine after this man for all eternity, because even James Tiberius Kirk couldn’t make a joke about your heartache. He did, however, affectionately nickname this mysterious man ‘Mr. Dreamy’ and continue to ask you about him and allow you to vent. It was nice to not have to bottle it all up, but it felt strange talking to one of your best friends about the other without him even knowing that it was the other best friend that you were talking about. Your conscience certainly took a guilty blow every time you’d end up in tears in Jim’s arms, or have to quickly change the conversation because Leonard was approaching. Jim never questioned it though, nor did he push the topic when you stopped bringing it up once aboard the Enterprise, leaving him to assume that Mr. Dreamy was left behind at the academy.
“You’re late,” Jim says as you fall into the chair beside him.
“You’re ugly,” you retort.
The large conference room is devoid of the oversized table that usually sits at its center, instead there are only two smaller tables piled high with medical equipment surrounded by a number of limbless, humanoid dummies. You and Jim are sitting in the front row of the audience chairs, whereas most of the crew attending had opted for further back.
“That’s no way to speak to your captain,” he chuckles, “what’s got your panties in a knot?”
“My panties are neither yours nor Scotty’s business,” you snap, though as soon as the words leave your lips you know you’ve given away exactly the reason why they are in a proverbial knot.
You’ve been aboard the USS Enterprise for almost two years, which means it’s been two years and one month – give or take a day – since you’ve been laid, and holy shit are you frustrated. It isn’t that you have an aversion to sex, or are practicing abstinence, in fact, you have a very healthy enjoyment for the act. It just so happens that you can’t seem to want anyone other than the one man you can’t have, because who fucking knows what would happen if you went down that route after five long years of friendship.
Jim’s laughter turns into a childish giggle, “has it been a while?”
You roll your eyes, “yes, Jim, it’s been a while.”
“How long?”
You turn in your chair to face the curious man, “that is also none of your business.”
“You know,” he glances around the room, “I know for a fact that there are many lovely lieutenants aboard this ship who would be more than willing to scratch that itch for you.”
“Shut up,” you hiss, “and no. Do you know how complicated it can get when you sleep with someone you’re stuck on a spaceship with for five years?”
“I do, actually,” he replies, “I know very well, but that doesn’t mean we should have to ignore one of our most primal needs.”
“Primal needs,” you roll your eyes again, “I appreciate the concern, but I’ll be fine. Three more years won’t kill me.”
He gasps, “it’s been three years?”
You roll your eyes again so hard you’re sure you saw your brain, “Jim, you know very well it hasn’t been three years.”
“Wait, so you haven’t slept with any since… since we-”
“Nope,” you say, stopping him from finish that sentence.
Yep, you had sex with Jim Kirk, but in your defense, who hasn’t? It was a drunken night, one week from embarking on the Enterprise’s five-year journey, and you were both a little lonely and incredibly horny. It wasn’t half bad either, if only a little strange sleeping with one of your best friends while you were in love with the other.
“Holy shit, Y/N, I didn’t-”
“Of course you didn’t know, Jim,” you sigh, turning back to the front of the room, “besides it’s not like I haven’t had… options, I’m just not interested.”
He frowns, “don’t tell me you’re still hung up on Mr. Dreamy.”
You purse your lips to keep from laughing, not out of mirth but something more along the lines of grim amusement, and your silence is enough of an answer for Jim.
“Hey,” he places a hand on your arm, “you know, I wouldn’t object if you wanted me to… help you out again. Believe me it was no chore, I mean-”
“Jim!” you snap, “shut up before somebody hears you.”
His cheeky grin only grows wider, “come on, you think anyone on this ship would be surprised to find out we’ve slept together?”
Before you can reply, the sound of someone clearing their throat catches your attention, and you both snap toward the front of the room to find the doctor himself staring at you. His frown is harsher than usual, and his hair a little mussed, which only fills your inappropriate mind with a thousand different fantasies of the messy-haired doctor in your bed.
“Well,” Jim sighs, “maybe one person.”
You glance around to the find majority of the room watching you while the rest of them do anything they can to not witness this situation unfold.
“Sorry, Bones,” Jim says, “you can begin now.”
“Well, thank you, Jim,” the doctor replies sarcastically before turning his attention to the room, “now that our captain has given his blessing, let’s get started.”
Jim settles back in his chair, though his demeanor is less relaxed and a little more anxious than before. You keep your eyes trained on the holographic slides behind Leonard as he talks about first aid basics and what different codes and acronyms mean. You try your hardest not to look at him, but all you can think about is how much you want to jump his bones. His voice is still a little raspy from sleep, and you start to fantasize about how delicious his Southern drawl would sound whispered against your neck.
Your almost halfway through a dangerously vivid daydream when Jim nudges you. “Are you okay?” he asks, and only then do you realise that the rest of crew had begun packing away their chairs to make room on the floor.
You nod and stand, dragging your chair to the side while Jim retrieves one of the rubbery dummies from the front of the room. Everyone pairs off, and you sit on the opposite side of the dummy to Jim while he uses his PADD to pull up some notes.
“Now,” Bones says, “we’re going to practice a variety of different cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. The concept is the same, it just depends on the anatomy of the patient.”
Jim hands you the PADD and you start flipping through all the different diagrams of different species’ anatomies, each illustration pointing out the location of the body’s heart, lungs, and esophagus.
“How the hell does he remember all these?” you wonder aloud.
Jim chuckles, “why do you think he’s so grumpy all the time?”
You get up on your knees for a better angle at the dummy and place your hands over where the heart would be on a human.
“I have to ask,” he says before you can start practicing compressions, “how do you even know if Mr. Dreamy is still single? Why wait for him?”
“It’s not like I still think I have a chance with him,” you reply, “it’s just… complicated.”
“How could it be complicated? I know you’ve got your excuses, but if you’re so in love with this guy, what’s to lose if you just ask him out?”
You can’t help but glance over your shoulder at the doctor. He’s kneeling beside another pair and helping them with their hand placement.
“It just is,” you say, before starting CPR on your own dummy.
“Well,” Jim says, “my offer still stands, because who knows how long before you’re grumpier than the good doctor over there.”
You sit back on your heels and gesture for him to take his turn, deciding not to acknowledge his proposal. After taking turns on three different methods of CPR, the doctor appears beside you.
“Do you need any help?” he asks as he kneels on the floor, and you want to say yes but you know he’s only referring to the dummy.
“You underestimate us, Bones,” Jim replies, “we’re top of the class.”
“Sure you are,” Bones rolls his eyes, “show me then.”
Jim sits back and gestures for you to do the honors.
You turn to the doctor, and the butterflies in your stomach erupt into a frenzy. “J-Just human?” you ask, cursing yourself for stuttering.
He nods and you lean over the dummy, placing your hands over where the sternum would be and starting a rhythmic pulse of compressions.
“Harder,” he says, which almost makes your hands slip off the dummy entirely. “Don’t be scared to break a rib, I’m sure they’d prefer a broken bone over death.”
You take a deep breath to compose yourself and put a little more force into the compressions. After counting to thirty, you tip the head of the dummy back, pinch its rubbery nose, and act as if you’re blowing into its mouth without actually putting your lips on it. Then you return to performing compressions.
“Good girl,” the doctor praises, and your sure your heart stops just as your breath does. Your hands slip and you have to catch yourself on the floor to keep from faceplanting.
You sit back and stare at Bones’ arms as he rolls his sleeves up and positions himself over the dummy.
“Make sure you interlock your fingers,” he says, “and keep your arms extended, that way you won’t lose stability.”
You want to listen, but you can’t stop staring at his bare arms as he performs perfect CPR on the doll in front of you. His skin is tanned and taught across his strong muscles, honed from years of practicing to have the steadiest and most skilled hands in all of Starfleet. His hands, oh god, you’ve had countless dreams about them tangling in your hair and touching every inch of your body.
You shift a little to try and relieve the pressure building between your thighs.
“Jim,” Bones says, “your turn.”
You look up to find Jim staring at you, his brows furrowed and a question on his lips as he slowly moves to take over from the doctor. Once satisfied with Jim’s technique, Bones leaves to help another pair and you quickly start flipping through the PADD to find the next diagram.
“Y/N,” Jim says, his tone suddenly serious.
You glance up, your cheeks hot, “Captain.”
He stares at you, his blue eyes trapping you and stopping you from looking away no matter how much you want to.
“Holy shit,” you can practically see the lightbulb flash above his head, “holy shit, I can’t believe I didn’t notice! I mean, it’s so obvious, and- how the hell did I not realise? Holy shit.”
“Jim-”
“It’s Bones!” he exclaims, earning startled glances from the people surrounding you.
“Jim, please-”
“No, no, no, you’re not lying your way out of this one,” he says, “I can’t believe you wouldn’t tell me that Mr. Dreamy- or should I say Doctor Dreamy is Bones.”
You sink onto your bum and cross your legs on front of you, leaning your elbows on your knees as you hide your face in your hands. “Jim, please don’t say anything,” you plead, “he can’t know, no one can know.”
“The way you look at him, the way you’ve always looked at him,” he goes on, though his voice is significantly lower, “I can’t believe I didn’t notice.”
Before you can say another word, Bones calls the room’s attention. Behind him, the holographic slides have changed to new points of information, and everyone falls silent to listen to the doctor’s speech.
You can see Jim squirming from the corner of your eye as you try to listen to the rest of the seminar, but it’s almost impossible to hear anything over the beating of your own heart. Heat washes over you in waves, ensuring your cheeks remain a bright shade of red and making your uniform feel itchy and tight. It feels like an eternity before Bones announces a break for lunch.
You grab Jim before he can move and begin dragging him out of the room, down the corridor, and into one of the smaller, vacant conference rooms.
He’s already giggling as you flop into one of the chairs, “you’re in love with Bones.”
You sigh, “yep.”
“And have been for five years?”
“Yep.”
“Why wouldn’t you tell me?”
“Because it’s stupid,” you reply, “and when I first met him, he was still getting over the divorce. Every time we’d drink together, he’d end up ranting about his ex and either make himself angry or upset. We all became such good friends, and before I knew it… I just didn’t want to ruin the friendship.”
“Ruin the friendship?” he repeats, “what are we? Teenagers in some old, soapy television drama?”
You shrug, “yes, I’m in love with him, but I’d rather have him in my life even just as a friend than not at all.”
“What makes you think he wouldn’t want to be with you?”
“Have you seen the women who hit on him?” you scoff, “and the women he’s been with? I could never-”
“Hey,” he interrupts you and pinches your chin between his thumb and forefinger, “none of that. You’re gorgeous, and Bones would be an idiot not to agree.”
“Okay,” you swat his hand away, “say we did go out, but it didn’t go well, and then I’ve lost one of my closest friends and made it incredibly awkward for you. Not to mention being stuck on this damn ship with him for another three years.”
Jim huffs, his eyes boring into his own shoes. It looks as if he’s having his own argument in his head, his posture rigid and his lips set into a hard line.
“Jim, just promise-”
“Sorry to interrupt,” a red-shirted lieutenant pokes their head through the door, “but I actually have this room booked in five minutes.”
“Oh,” you stand and grab Jim’s arm, “sorry.”
You pull your captain into the corridor and begin back toward the big conference room.
“Y/N, just hear me out.”
You turn abruptly and push Jim against the wall with a hand on his chest, “no, Jim, you hear me out. You know how I feel, and you know how long I’ve felt like this, so don’t you dare try and tell me what I should do. Just because you now know it’s Leonard doesn’t change anything.”
“Okay,” he raises his hands in surrender, “okay, I’ll shut up, I’m sorry.”
You release him slowly and he lowers his hands.
“I have to admit though,” he smirks, “he’d be an excellent lay.”
“Jim!” you exclaim, your hands balling into fists at your side.
He chuckles and looks down the corridor, his grin disappearing the instant his eyes land on the doctor. You frown and follow his gaze before quickly taking two steps back from your captain.
Jim clears his throat, “Bones-”
“We’re starting again,” the doctor says, before turning sharply and walking back into the conference room.
Neither of you say another word as you reenter the room and take a seat in the front row once again. Leonard avoids looking your way for the rest of the afternoon, and though you can’t help but worry about what you’ve done wrong, it also allows you to stare at him unashamedly. You let your thoughts run wild, imagining his hands pinning your wrists down, his body on top of yours, and his mouth everywhere as he slowly unties that knot below your stomach that’s been twisting tighter and tighter for five years.
Eventually he calls the day to an end, and everyone thanks him before shuffling out of the room, everyone but Jim.
“Dinner?” you ask.
He takes a deep breath before standing, “I’ll be there soon, you go ahead.”
Your heart thuds nervously, but you stop yourself from questioning him any further and turn toward the door. You’re the last out aside from Jim, and you can hear him address his friend just as you step into the corridor. The last of the crew shuffle into the lift. “Are you coming?” one asks.
You fight with your good conscience before shaking your head, “no, you go.”
The doors of the lift ease shut, and you turn several times on the spot, asking yourself whether you’re a sneaky person before giving in and pressing yourself against the conference room’s door.
“Bones,” you hear Jim’s voice, “just listen to me.”
“I don’t really feel like listening to you right now, Jim,” the doctor bites back.
You frown and press your ear against the door.
“Please, let me explain.”
“Explain what exactly?” Bones asks, his tone harsh, “the part where you slept with girl I love, or the part where you lied to me so that I didn’t?”
You smack your hand over your mouth to keep from gasping… or screaming.
“I didn’t lie to you, Bones, I just-”
“You told me she was in love with some other guy, and that I couldn’t ask her out because it would only make things awkward.”
“I didn’t lie to you, I-I just didn’t know that-” Jim sighs loudly, “Bones, I am sorry, we were both drunk and it didn’t mean anything, it was just-”
“Just sex?” Bones snaps, “that’s all it ever is with you, Jim, you never think about anyone else.”
“I know, it was stupid, but I never lied to you,” Jim says, “she really was- is in love with someone, but she never told me who it was. I just- I assumed it was some guy back at the academy, and I should have realised-”
“Realised what, Jim?”
You can only imagine the two of them squaring up to each other, and you try desperately not to let the picture of an infuriated Leonard turn you on.
“The guy she was- is in love with, she never told me who it was, we just called him by some stupid nickname, she’s loved him for years, but I never-”
“Are you trying to torture me?” Bones interrupts again, “spit it out, damnit!”
“It’s you!” Jim exclaims.
Your heart lurches, threatening to break through your ribcage and burst right out of your chest.
“She’s in love with you, has been for years.”
The silence is heavy, and you have to hold your breath to stay quiet.
“What are you playing, Jim?”
“Nothing, I’m telling you the truth,” their voices are no longer raised, “and I am sorry, Bones. I shouldn’t have slept with her, drunk or not.”
Another beat of silence passes.
“I didn’t realise you were still in love with her,” the captain says quietly, and you have lean against the door before your knees give way.
Bones sighs, “course I am.”
“Then tell her.”
“Tell her?”
You startle at the sound of footsteps approaching, jumping back from the door when it slides open.
Jim smirks, “I didn’t take you for the spying type.”
You don’t have a chance to reply before he pulls you into the room and drags you toward the doctor. He smiles at both of you, pats Bones on the shoulder, and leaves.
“Hi,” you murmur.
“Hi.”
Staring up at him, you soften instantly under his hazel gaze. You can feel the warmth from his body, you’re standing so close, and you’re positive your cheeks are burning red.
“I’m sorry,” he sighs, running a hand through his hair, “Jim’s just-”
You’re not sure if it’s the fact that you’re touch starved or just overwhelmed by what you’d just heard, but you surge up onto your toes and press your lips against his. He catches your waist and presses your body against his, tilting his head to allow your mouths better access to each other as his tongue slides past your lips. You can’t help the little whimper that travels up your throat, which only urges Leonard on. He turns your bodies and sits you on the table, knocking half of the equipment on it to the floor. Your legs part and he settles between them, pressing into you enough to make you shudder.
“I love you,” he says between open mouthed kisses, “by the way.”
You giggle against his lips, “I love you too.”
His hands stroke your jaw before travelling gently down your neck and chest and stopping to cup your breasts. He groans, and you sigh, before his hands continue down to your hips and he holds you in place to grind against you.
You gasp, his name falling from your lips like a prayer, “Len.”
Your hook the fingers of your right hand in the band of his pants while your left travels up under his shirt. His skin is so hot and so soft, you can feel the appreciation for him pooling in your panties.
“Oh, my God,” a voice exclaims, and you jump apart, “that was quick!”
Leonard looks over his shoulder but keeps his body facing you, concealing the bulge in his pants. “Damnit, Jim!”
The captain giggles, his grin so broad you’re worried he might get stuck like that, “this is a public space.”
At the same time, you and Leonard shout, “get out!”
He continues laughing as he leaves, and only then does Leonard disentangle himself from you and march toward the door to lock it. When he turns back, you can’t help but giggle at the delicious sight of him.
“Want some help with that?” you ask, nodding toward his crotch.
He’s back on you in less than a second, claiming your neck with a heavenly bite. “Thought you’d never ask,” he whispers against your skin.
END.

Spocktober + Trektober Day 2 - Hiding Injuries
Yeah, this is the reason I'm so behind on these prompts, doing a six panel comic in a day was NOT a smart idea 😅
(ID under cut)
[Image ID: A black and white six panel comic featuring Spock, Bones, and Jim Kirk from Star Trek: The Original Series.
Panel one: A wide shot inside a cave. Bones is kneeling in front of Jim, who has collapsed against a wall. Further into the cave, Spock stands with his back to them, his right arm across his chest. He says "We cannot stay here long. Take the Captain back to the ship."
Panel two: A closeup on Bones and Jim. Jim is unconscious, a bleeding gash on his forehead and the shoulder of his shirt torn. Bones is holding his face, but he's turned to look at Spock, aghast. He says "What, and leave you behind? Are you crazy? No way!"
Panel three: A closeup on Spock, from behind. We cannot see his face. He says "That is an order, Doctor. I will hold off our attackers."
Panel four: From offscreen, Bones says "But Spock--" Spock's head turns slightly, so we can see his eyebrows are furrowed and his mouth is downturned. He orders "LEAVE." in all caps.
Panel five: A wide shot again, although this time Spock is closer in the frame, visible from chest upwards. He is still holding his arm across his chest, and a slight disturbance in the fabric around his hand is visible. His face betrays no emotion. Behind him, Bones lifts Jim, who is still unconscious. Bones mutters "Goddamn stubborn Vulcan--" then says out loud, "C'mon, Jim."
Panel six: The same shot. Bones carries Jim out with Jim's arm over his shoulders. Spock removes his hand from his side, revealing a wound in his chest. He looks down at the blood on his hand impassively. As Bones carries Jim out, he grumbles "liable to get himself killed--"

Nic's AOS McKirk fic recs part 1:
longer (mostly 10k+ and/or multi-chapter), more plot-focused works
There are SO MANY excellent McKirk fics out there, and I'm only scratching the tip of the iceberg with these ones, but these are ten of my top favourites (you know, the sort of fics where you have to either yell in the group chat or stare into space for a bit afterwards, then think of it constantly for the following week?), so I hope some of the ones in here become your favourites too.
And remember, be kind, leave kudos/comments where you can, and enjoy!
In no particular order, we have:
jim kirk's guide to starship management: how to work with people you don't like by espressohno (E, 23k)
Jim has an anonymous hookup (read: the best sex of his life) with who else but the one and only Leonard McCoy, who's scheduled to start as the Enterprise's CMO the next day. Hijinks (emotions and miscommunication) ensue. A great exploration of Leonard and Jim's relationship, based around the question of: what if they met under slightly different circumstances?
unscrew the stars by espressohno (E, <10k)
Jim, lamenting his inability to pursue personal relationships due to being Captain of the Enterprise and under Starfleet's fraternisation rules, believes he's found a loophole that allows him to sleep with his CMO. Leonard, however, wants something more. Another one by espressohno, and honestly I'd recommend pretty much anything by this author.
Ask me again in the morning by @torsamors (G, 26k)
Time loop fic: Bones is stuck in a time loop. This fact upsets Jim every time he finds out, but Bones definitely isn't having a fun time either. An excellent getting-together fic told from the perspective of Jim outside the loop, with plenty of hurt and comfort.
One Little White Lie by laughter_now (M, 71k)
Jim lies about being married to Leonard after an accident which leads Leonard to losing his memory, which quickly spirals out of control. An incredible, emotional exploration of the fake marriage and amnesia tropes, becoming so much more than the sum of its tags. Another one for the fellow fans of Bones Having a Real Bad Time, with plenty of Jim angst in there too.
A Wish in the Dark (for a bulletproof heart) by drmcbones (T, 18k)
Without giving too much away: one close call too many for Jim has Leonard at the end of his tether. Somehow, a mysterious medical/magical ailment links the two of them together - how long can they keep it secret from even each other? I say this about every fic on the list, but this one is absolutely excellent - a really interesting plot I hadn't read much like before.
Catching Fire (The Firehouse AU) by kel_1970 (E, 46k)
21st Century fire department AU. Paramedic Leonard McCoy flees a disastrous break-up in Savannah and ends up working at a fire department in Iowa where he meets Jim Kirk. I know this one is on pretty much every McKirk rec list, but for good reason! A beautifully-written, emotional rollercoaster of a fic with rich settings and side characters. Will rip your heart out and stamp on it, then carefully piece it back together again. I read this one over a year ago and still I think of it on a regular basis, it hurts so good.
I Will Hold As Long As You Like by @excavatinglizard (T, 18k)
The Lighthouse fic. Set post-Into Darkness, Leonard takes Jim to a lighthouse to convalesce. Together they learn to weather the storm. A beautiful, emotional character study with rich settings that paint such a picture in the mind. Also comes with (beautiful) art and a playlist to really set the scene. Another one that I read over a year ago, as it was being published, and still think of on a regular basis.
Take a Bite of My Heart Tonight by EntreNous (T, 26k)
Vetenarian Bones AU. Jim Kirk and Leonard McCoy get off on the wrong foot as soon as they meet. So if Jim wants another shot with that gorgeous but grumpy veterinarian, he had better get his hands on some pets who need vet appointments, right? Such a fun, sweet, mostly fluffy fic of Jim getting up to some absolute (mostly unsuccessful) antics to win Leonard's heart
three sundays by espressohno
The fight club AU. Not Fight Club the film so much as a literal fight club: Leonard goes to fight club to get his anger out. Jim goes to fight club to get hurt. Leonard realizes this, and decides he doesn't want to hurt Jim anymore, but he doesn't want to stop seeing him, either. Plenty of hurt/comfort, and a whole lot of aftercare.
palimpsest by @fireinmywoods (E, 61k)
What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? Such an incredible story, even if the final chapter did make me yell out loud the first time around (and I mean that in the most affectionate way). I've read this one twice now and got something completely different out of it each time - an enjoyable read the first time but even richer with hindsight, so cleverly constructed. As for the plot - the Enterprise is sent to negitiate readmission to the Federation with an isolationist religious group known as the Kindred. While there, Jim notices that some of the children seem to be gravely ill. The Kindred do not allow a doctor to be brought in, and so Jim... well, he improvises. + 9 (so far) further, shorter works to flesh out the whole Palimpsest verse, which I enjoyed just as much as the original story - especially aganorisis (E, 15k), which I guarantee you'll want to read right after. Can mostly be read out of order, but you gotta read Palimpsest first, I promise!
And that's it for now! Thank you for reading, please tell me which ones you enjoyed the most (or your own favourite longer/plotty McKirk fics), and keep your eyes peeled for part 2

“What is this?”
Jim’s cheeks were starting to hurt from smiling, but he angled his PADD and took another snapshot.
“It’s a puppy!”
“Ashayam,” said Spock patiently, the effect rather ruined by the wriggling creature in his arms. “I am aware of what a canine’s young is called. I was referring to the situation. Where did you find this puppy, and why is it here?”
Hearing Spock say ‘puppy’ like he was talking about a photon torpedo was even better than Jim had dared to hope.
“It’s not an ‘it,’ she’s a ‘her,’ and I adopted her!”
That little crease of confusion appeared between Spock’s eyebrows. Adorable. “You – ”
“Well, we adopted her. I have paperwork for you to sign, by the way.”
Spock held the little brown ball of fluff out at arms’ length and examined her with a critical eye, then looked at Jim doubtfully. The puppy’s hind legs scrabbled at the air. “Jim,” he tried again. “Why did you not consult me about this?”
Jim summoned his best puppy dog eyes - which, he realized belatedly, he was going to have competition at now - and chewed on the corner of his lip in that way he knew made Spock melt.
Spock’s expression barely shifted, but Jim just knew he was melting on the inside. Gooey and delicious, just like that Betazoid chocolate they’d experimented with that time on Risa –
Jim shook himself out of that thought. God forbid he say this, but it wasn’t the time.
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” he pouted, reaching up to scratch the pup behind her ears. She flipped her tiny head this way and that trying to lick at his fingers. Jim giggled happily, and when he looked up Spock was giving him that look.
The one that said plainly to anyone paying attention that in Spock’s estimation Jim might as well have hung the stars in the cosmos.
“Fine,” Spock said. He shifted the pup in his arms so he was holding her less like a bomb and more like a - furry, yelpy, awkward - baby. “We may keep her.”
“Yes!” Jim punched the air and planted a noisy kiss on Spock’s cheek. He turned to their new dog, smooshing her face between his hands. “You hear that? You are officially the newest addition to the Kirk family.” Jim paused. “House of Surak family? What are we? Do you even have a last name?” He injected his voice with betrayal. “Why don’t I know these things? You clearly don’t trust me, I want a divorce.”
Spock just sighed, which was similar to him doing nothing at all, and turned away.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“I presume you did not prepare sufficiently before bringing her home – ”
“Uhhhh…”
“ – so I’m going to make a list of supplies we will need to make certain she is given proper care.”
“See!” Jim cried. He spread his arms wide to illustrate his point. “This is why we make a great team.”
“You may pick a name for her, if you prefer,” Spock went on as though Jim were simply part of the furniture and hadn’t just spoken. “But I reserve the right to veto any ridiculous suggestions.”
Spock deposited the puppy on the floor, and she promptly trotted after him to paw insistently at his heels.
Jim frowned. “Admiral Floof is not ridiculous.”
“I am not referring to our pet as ‘Admiral Floof’ to others with the ability to hear spoken language.”
“I don’t know,” Jim grinned, “that was pretty endearing. Say it again.”
The Admiral chose that opportune moment to pee all over Spock’s new boots.
Spock looked up at him and narrowed his eyes as if this were all Jim’s fault.
Jim slapped on an open-mouthed smile and shot both fists into the air. “Parenthood! This is gonna be fun!”
