El sello Contrastes Records, que fundó y dirige el guitarrista sevillano Francisco Bernier, sobrepasará a lo largo de 2024 el medio centenar de referencias

En su web o en la contraportada de cada uno de sus discos se puede leer: "Contrastes Records. 20-22 Wenlock Road, N17GU London (UK)". Pero Contrastes es el sello vinculado al Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilla que en 2013 fundó su creador, el sevillano Francisco Bernier. "En realidad, tras el sello está también Royds F. Imbert, un cubano que vive en Montréal y que es su director artístico, y está el vihuelista australiano John Griffiths, que se ha encargado siempre de los libretos de los discos. Fue Griffiths quien, cuando estudiábamos los opciones, nos sugirió Londres. Era mucho más fácil de crear la empresa y, como nuestra voluntad nunca fue localista, era una forma de internacionalizarlo. Estamos muy contentos". Dedicado a la guitarra, Contrastes se acerca ya al medio centenar de referencias. "Las pasaremos en los próximos meses", comenta Bernier, "y en nuestro ánimo está el seguir adelante". Ello a pesar de que discos ya se venden pocos, pero "estamos satisfechos con la presencia mediática que tienen en el mundo y el acceso de oyentes a través de las plataformas. En 2023 sobrepasamos el medio millón de escuchas, que no sé muy bien cómo valorar comparativamente con otras marcas, pero que para nosotros, un sello tan específico, dedicado sobre todo a la guitarra clásica, a mí me suena muy bien".

Hace unas semanas se comentaba en esta misma página la publicación de Ochra, un álbum que Giuseppe Mennuti dedicó a la música guitarrística de José María Sánchez Verdú, y hoy, cumplida ya la primera década de vida del sello, damos cuenta de una media docena de sus más recientes producciones. Empezando por Carnival de Marko Topchii, ganador del Primer Premio del Certamen Internacional Francisco Tárrega de Benicásim en 2021, una de las formas de trabajar de Contrastes. "Tenemos acuerdos con el Concurso de Benicásim y con el Michele Pittaluga de Alessandria, un importante concurso italiano, para publicar los discos asociados al Premio. Hemos conseguido también un acuerdo con la Guitar Foundation of America, que organiza el más importante concurso de Estados Unidos, para grabar opcionalmente el segundo disco del ganador. El primer disco es obligatorio y lo hacen con Naxos, el segundo es opcional, si el guitarrista quiere hacerlo, y ahí hemos entrado nosotros. Este año ha ganado Marko Topchii y vuelve para trabajar con nosotros". El guitarrista ucraniano, con 33 años recién cumplidos, publicó por primera vez con la marca en 2016 un álbum titulado Van Gogh Fire como ganador de un concurso de San Diego. En Carnival, junto a algunos grandes clásicos de Brouwer, Rodrigo (Invocación y Danza), Tárrega (Variaciones sobre el carnaval de Venecia, Recuerdos de la Alhambra) o Tansman, incluye música menos conocida de Vicente Asencio, Sergio Assad o el británico Richard Rodney Bennet, reconocido principalmente por su música fílmica y de jazz.

El yugoslavo Ivan Petricevic (Belgrado, 1987) comparece en el sello aunando en Esmeralda's Waltz la música de Bach (una versión impresionante de la Partita para violín solo nº2 que, como bien comenta Griffiths en sus notas, puede tocarse en la guitarra a una octava de distancia pero sin variar una nota del original) con la de Dušan Bogdanović, su paisano, guitarrista y compositor de amplísimo reconocimiento, de quien toca su Sonata nº2 y dos piezas breves, entre ellas la que da título al CD. El polaco con formación americana Paul Cesarczyk estuvo este año en el festival sevillano para presentar precisamente Returns, un amplio paseo que se acerca a la Francia del siglo XVI para recoger la música escrita por un compatriota, Jakob Reys, apodado "el polaco", casi un antecedente de las suites del siglo siguiente, pasa por varios Estudios de dos habituales del repertorio guitarrístico (Giulio Regondi y Leo Brouwer), se acerca al danés Per Nørgård para tocar la obra que da título al disco, hace una obra propia (las Melodías populares polacas de 2008) y termina con otro homenaje, el que Toru Takemitsu dedicó a los Beatles transcribiendo algunas de sus canciones más célebres, en este caso la inmortal Yesterday.

Entre los discos recién publicados también a finales de 2023 se incluye uno muy cercano y bien conocido en Sevilla, ya que el onubense José Luis Pastor lo ha presentado al menos un par de veces en la ciudad. Se trata de Vade Mecum, un largo e intrincado paseo por la historia de la guitarra, ya que Pastor utiliza doce instrumentos diferentes, haciendo un recorrido por música del siglo XIII hasta el más estricto presente, porque las últimas son creaciones propias, un esfuerzo verdaderamente formidable que si en concierto es capaz de fascinar al espectador en el disco lo deslumbra. Anotemos los nombres de los instrumentos: vihuela de péñola, vihuela de rueda, cítola, guitarra medieval, guitarra renacentista, vihuela de mano, guitarra barroca, guitarra romántica, guitarra clásica, guitarra flamenca, guitarra acústica, guitarra eléctrica.

El australiano John Griffiths había dejado ya un disco de vihuela en los primeros tiempos del sello (Intimate vihuela) y ahora publica un trabajo dedicado exclusivamente a la Silva de Sirenas, el libro que Enríquez de Valderrábano editó en Valladolid en 1547, formando parte de esas siete grandes publicaciones vihuelísticas aparecidas en España en el XVI. Griffiths estuvo también en el Festival sevillano de 2023 presentando su CD. Finalmente, la penúltima referencia de Contrastes lleva nombre de mujer: la jovencísima Vera Danilina (Penza, Rusia, 1999) fue la ganadora en Alessandria en 2022 y en febrero de 2023 vino a Sevilla a grabar su disco, que incluye junto a hits de Bach (Preludio de la Partita nº3) o Mozart (dos números de la Sonata KV 311, la del Allegretto alla turca), un clásico imprescindible de la guitarra española del siglo XX, la Sonata de Antonio José, música del poco conocido por aquí guitarrista y compositor Nikita Koshkin (Moscú, 1956) hasta un final con la Cavalcade del guitarrista francés Matthias Duplessy. No he tenido ocasión de escuchar la última referencia publicada por el sello, Shaula de Andrea Nosari.

"Quiero organizar el festival que se merece Sevilla"

Un concierto de la japonesa Nene Yokomura en la Casa de los Pinelo abre mañana, martes 3 de octubre, la XIV edición del Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilla

Guitarrista de amplísima trayectoria internacional y profesor en el Superior hispalense, Francisco Bernier (Sevilla, 1975) fundó en 2010 y dirige artísticamente desde entonces el Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilla. 

–¿Cuáles son las principales novedades de este año?

–Dedicamos el festival a Federico García Lorca en el 125 aniversario de su nacimiento. Su relación con la guitarra fue cercana. Fue guitarrista autodidacta. Su relación con Falla y el concurso de Cante Jondo… Sus mismos poemas… Coincidimos en Córdoba con David del Puerto, Premio Nacional de Música de composición, que es guitarrista también. Él vino a escuchar el concierto que dimos el Cuarteto de Guitarras de Andalucía junto a Cañizares, y hablando después de nuestro proyecto lorquiano se comprometió a escribirnos una obra. Esa obra se titula Cuerdas del viento, parte del Poema del Cante Jondo y está escrita para cuarteto de guitarras (el nuestro) y soprano, que será Auxiliadora Toledano, una cordobesa que vive en Madrid. Es una obra muy compleja de casi una hora de duración, en diecinueve movimientos, pero que se tocan seguidos, sin pausas. Con su estreno inauguramos oficialmente este Festival el próximo 11 de octubre. Creo que va a ser un evento muy importante. David dará una charla antes del concierto sobre su obra, que además tenemos pensado grabar.

–¿La presentarán en algún otro sitio?

–Estamos en conversaciones con el Festival de Guitarra de Córdoba y con el Festival de Granada. Quizás haya alguna opción en la Fundación Juan March o en el Instituto Cervantes de Viena. David del Puerto es una gran personalidad de la música española de hoy y esta obra debería tener recorrido.

–Tienen en cualquier caso actividades antes de ese programa inaugural…

–Sí, hacemos un concierto de presentación el día 3 en la Casa de los Pinelo. Lo dará Nene Yokomura, que es una chica muy talentosa que estudia aquí en Sevilla.

–Estuvieron ya en los Pinelo hace unos años. ¿Qué hay del resto de espacios?

–Sí, en los Pinelo estuvimos en 2019. Este año volvemos a la Capilla Gótica del Alcázar. Recuperamos el Cicus, donde hacía tiempo que no íbamos: allí se presentará una obra de José María Sánchez Verdú, que dará una charla previa. Su obra, que se titula Ochra, la tocará Giuseppe Menutti, un chico que pasó por el Conservatorio de Sevilla y que está haciendo una carrera fantástica en el ámbito de la música contemporánea. Volvemos al Antiqvarium, donde ya estuvimos el año pasado, y al Espacio Santa Clara, donde hemos estado también otras veces. El centro del festival sigue siendo el Espacio Turina.

–Siguen con la fórmula de programas dobles, pero este año juntan siempre un guitarrista clásico con uno flamenco, ¿son conscientes de que en Sevilla el público de la Clásica y el del Flamenco se cruzan poco?

–Sí, pero el festival está dedicado a Lorca, y él supuso un puente de unión entre las tradiciones clásica y jonda, y por eso nos pareció bonita esta apuesta. Actualmente además hay muchísimos guitarristas que pasan continuamente la línea entre un mundo y otro, que tienen muchos puntos en común. Ofrecemos por ejemplo en el Alcázar un espectáculo en el que actúan juntos Miguel Ángel Cortés y José María Gallardo del Rey presentando un disco que han hecho juntos, una perspectiva flamenca de la música de Albéniz. Qué mejor ejemplo. Lo que dice del público puede ser cierto. Conocemos los riesgos, pero nos pareció interesante. Quién sabe si así podemos conseguir que algunos aficionados flamencos se interesen por la clásica y viceversa. Teníamos que intentarlo.

–¿Qué guitarristas nuevos vienen este año?

–Tenemos algunos guitarristas flamencos que tocan por primera vez en el festival: Alejandro Hurtado, Paco Fernández, que tocará acompañado por la violinista Gloria Wasmer, o Pedro María Peña, que dará un concierto con el cante de Luis el Zambo. Daniel Casares y Dani de Morón hace tiempo que no venían, sobre todo el segundo de ellos. Entre los clásicos es completamente nuevo Franz Halasz, y luego los chicos del Off Festival, que son los jóvenes de talento que tenemos en el Conservatorio.

–¿De dónde salen los recursos para la organización del Festival?

–De donde siempre, aunque este año con un poco más de drama. En primer lugar, debo agradecer a los artistas participantes su buena voluntad para acercarse hasta Sevilla, porque vienen por cachés que no están en el mercado. Este año se nos ha caído la ayuda de la Consejería de Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía. Me parece algo sorprendente, porque el Canela Party de Torremolinos ha recibido 60 mil euros. Yo respeto mucho todas las iniciativas, pero se trata de un evento que no sé si lleva dos o tres ediciones, que es un macrofestival de tres días, con 900 mil euros de presupuesto, y sinceramente no sé si el dinero público tiene que ir a soportar algo que podría vivir del mercado. Esos 60 mil euros han hecho que nosotros y algún otro festival nos quedemos sin ayuda de la Junta. Así que nuestro soporte fundamental es el ICAS. Después tenemos pequeñas ayudas y colaboraciones, que nos ofrecen las Cuerdas Savarez, los hoteles ABBA o la Sociedad de Artistas Intérpretes y Ejecutantes. Pensábamos que la Fundación SGAE podría estar interesada este año, por la presencia de estrenos de David del Puerto y Sánchez Verdú, pero tampoco han querido o podido estar.

–¿Y quién avala todo esto?

–En buena parte, yo.

–En ese caso, ¿no es su proyecto demasiado ambicioso?

–Me parece que la tradición de la ciudad con la guitarra, su idiosincrasia, pide algo así, algo importante. Yo quiero organizar el festival que se merece Sevilla. Y creo que las instituciones públicas deberían estar detrás apoyándonos, o al menos que su planteamiento sea claro al respecto, para saber a qué atenernos, porque la acumulación de sinsabores año tras otro también cansa. Lo lamento mucho, porque son ya catorce ediciones. De cualquier forma, también le digo que esto se me pasa en el momento en que empieza a sonar la música, y yo estoy dispuesto a seguir luchando para sacar adelante más ediciones del festival.

–Cuando me siente con usted el año próximo para comentar la edición de 2024, ¿qué le gustaría decirme?

–Que 2023 se quedó pequeño.
