do you edit your photos at all?

nope! i shoot on a nikon coolpix 3200 set to -1.7 exposure compensation. sometimes i go up to -1.3 at night, but rarely above that. i underexpose because the nikon is like many digital cameras in that its automatic settings are too bright, but underexposing makes the colors pop. since sometime in 2020 i have been experimenting with setting the white balance to the 'incandescent' preset - this emphasizes the blues and cooler tones in the scene.

i'm glad you asked this, actually, because it gives me an opportunity to talk about why i chose this specific camera.

i come from a background of shooting film - at the time of this writing i have a bag with 216 rolls left to process, shot between 2014ish to 2021. i was attracted to 35mm and 110 film because i was sick of computers and wanted something with that elusive x-quality, a warmth/intimacy that i saw was lacking in the images from my digital camera. i shot a cornucopia of film throughout high school, on a million different point and shoots. (the highlight of my life at that point was when i bought 5 olympus xa's for a dollar each at an estate sale - the deceased was a camera collector & there was a canon room, a nikon room, an olympus room...)

but i look at photography as a diary, and the detail with which i document things was adding up to an overstuffed carpetbag of film to develop. around 2018 i began to wonder if i could exploit the very thing about digital images that i was trying to avoid, the cold, clinical look. i began looking at product photography (the canned food isle in your grocery store is pure unadulterated inspiration if you pay attention to the label designs), kitchen disease and a whooooole lot of the new topographics photographers.

at the same time i was sifting through the local thrift stores searching for the perfect digital camera. i first found a sony dsc-s750 at a pawn shop in 2018, and liked the images it gave back a lot. (different looking results than the coolpix, and 7 megapixels, but equally compelling - i would totally shoot one again) but i wanted something i could run on rechargable aa batteries, and that was a tad less - for lack of a better term - modern. eventually a quick 'test' flash shot of the glass countertop revealed to me my new best friend and constant companion, the nikon coolpix 3200, which i took home for $6. folks, this is from that magical era of ccd digicams when they got everything right. i didn't have a computer for a couple years but i would take my coolpix and a littany of 1 gb sd cards to the local library and dump the .jpgs directly to tumblr/flickr. if you set the exposure compensation to -1.7, you won't need to do any editing. this camera manages to be digital and still cater to the part of me that doesn't want to deal with computers by giving natural looking, soulful colors right out of the gate.

a word of warning to anyone looking to follow in my footsteps: there was a later model coolpix that looks like the 3200 but is 4 megapixels. the noise reduction nikon used in this camera makes the jpgs look wayyyy too soft. if you're looking to get one of these cameras the 3200 is where it's at. it's served me well - i've ran through four of them so far. (it's a very tough camera, but it was also released in march of 2004 and sometimes they develop trouble extending the lens after being sat on, moshed into or otherwise mistreated.) also, be sure to set the quality of the jpgs to the highest setting in the menu and the (gorgeous, borderline 16mm-like) video setting to 640x480.

Chickenized reverse-centaurs

AI researchers talk about "centaurs" - machine-human collaborative teams that outperform either computers or people. The greatest chess players in the world are collaborations between chess-masters and chess software.

But not all centaurs are created equal. A "reverse centaur" is what happens when a human is made to assist a machine, rather than the other way around. Amazon may not have invented the reverse centaur, but they perfected it.

Take the "Mechanical Turk," a massive cohort of precarious, sub-minimum-wage pieceworkers who do human decision support for automated processes. There's a reason that South Asian labor activists say "AI" stands for "absent Indians."

Or Amazon warehouse automation: Amazon warehouse robots can't pick-and-pack the items they locate, so they shuttle them to human pickers at a dangerous tempo. The more automated an Amazon warehouse becomes, the more injuries it reports.

Reverse-centaurism isn't the only human-life-destroying area where Amazon leads. It's also a leader in "chickenization," a labor economics term that comes from the US poultry industry, where workers are misclassified as independent contractors.

The poultry packers have divided the country into noncompeting territories, so "independent" farmers only have one vendor who'll take their birds. The farmers have to buy their chicks from that monopolist, who also specs their feed, medicine and housing.

The farmers are told everything - except what they'll be paid. When the farmers bring their birds to market, the monopolist exploits its information asymmetry advantage to offer just enough for the farmer to start over again, but not enough to get ahead or out of debt.

Chickenization is like avian flu: prone to jumping its niche and spreading virulently to every corner of the world. Chickenization is now rampant across all labor markets, from call-centers:

Amazon loves chickenization, too. Its Flex delivery program uses employees misclassified as independent contractors, paying sub-minimum wage. The company subjects these drivers to constant overt and covert surveillance.

But as bad as Flex is, it's not the end-state of Amazon's innovative workplace terrors. For that, you need to look at Delivery Service Partners (DSP), a workforce of chickenized reverse-centaurs. This is some peak innovation right here.

Writing for Wired, Caitlin Harrington describes the suffocating horror of chickenized reverse-centaurs.

Amazon claims that DSP drivers don't work for them. Instead, they work for "entrepreneurs" who buy Amazon delivery vans and pay drivers to operate them.

There are 158,000 DSP drivers, working for 2,500 DSPs. They wear Amazon uniforms and drive Amazon vans. Amazon packs those vans with reverse-centaur gear: Rabbit (realtime tracking), Mentor (automatic driver-scoring) and Netradyne (a mesh of always-on AI spy cameras).

Amazon DSP vans have Netradyne cameras inside and out, including one that is always trained on drivers' faces, performing digital phrenology on them, scoring them based on junk-science microexpression detection and other imaginary metrics.

Now DSP drivers aren't just expected to match an impossible machine pace by limiting water intake so bathroom breaks won't derail the 300 packages they deliver during a 10-hour shift.

Netradyne cameras are next-level reverse-centaurism. They make sure you're not yawning while you deliver 300 packages during a 10-hour shift - and if you do, they deduct points and notify your manager.

And because they're both chickenized and reverse-centaured, DSP drivers are left with little recourse. Amazon doesn't allow any individual DSP to 40 vans. That means that if a DSP's drivers unionize, Amazon can just cut its contract with the DSP and put them all out of work.

Unions are (maybe) finally coming to Amazon's US ops. The union drive at the Bessemer, AB warehouse could be the start of a new era for Amazon and its workers: fair wages and safe working conditions for the workforce that we've all come to depend on.

But that won't help DSP drivers win wage- and condition-parity with other drivers in the industry (UPS's unionized drivers make $38/h plus benefits and pensions). DSP doesn't work for Amazon, they work for an Amazon contractor.

But as Harrington points out, there is precedent for this kind of fragmented workforce attaining labor justice. In the 1980s, large firms fired their custodial staff and replaced them with subcontractors working for staffing firms.

The Justice For Janitors movement targeted the companies where these workers showed up for work, not the companies that sent them a paycheck. This got all the subcontractors' janitors ready to unionize: they signed union-cards en masse and doubled their wages.

Justice for Janitors didn't have to contend with the kind of digital controls Amazon has mastered - but they also didn't have access to the Discord and Reddit forums where DSPs are organizing today.

And Biden's NLRB is seeking to strike down Trump's annihilation of the "joint employer" classification that Obama used to force McDonald's franchisees to bargain with their workers.

The 1935 National Labor Relations Act was wise to worker misclassification, and allowed workers to provided service to a company to unionize. The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 gutted this protection by excluding contractors from collective bargaining.

Flex drivers - and Uber drivers and other "gig economy" chickenizees - are prisoners to this exemption, and the PRO Act, which is headed for a showdown with the GOP in the Senate, would fix it, restoring the right to unionize.

White Sands Blonde mice and white lizards blend into the background in a desert of milk-white dunes.

Shimmering white dunes, shaped and contoured by the wind into smoothly rounded crescents, stretch endlessly before the eyes of wanderers in the White Sands. But this is unusual sand – not the usual quartz, but gypsum. White Sands is the world’s most impressive gypsum desert, about 300sq miles (780km2) in extent; it lies in the flat-floored Tularosa Valley in New Mexico, and much of it has been a US National Monument since 1933. No one ever exploited its gypsum; the area was too remote and gypsum was plentiful elsewhere. Gypsum is a white mineral used in cement and plater manufacture, and massive layers of gypsum rock exist in the mountains that surround White Sands. Centuries of erosion by gravity, rain and melting snow have carried rock debris down to Lake Lucero, the lowest part of the basin, where it mixes with water that seeps up from the valley floor. Sun and wind evaporate the water to leave a dry bed of coarse encrusted gypsum that is ground by wind into fine particles. These are blown into dunes that can grow 100ft (30m) high. Slowly the wind shifts the dunes and they migrate north-east, sometimes at a rate of about 20ft (6m) a year. This arid, dazzling landscape below a wide, blue sky and relentless sun evokes the Old West – the Rio Grande is not far away. Mescalero Apaches came here to gather on the alkali flats, and there are still plaster casts of their campfires – the heated gypsum formed plaster of Paris, which was set by rain. Silver City, west of the San Andres Mountains, was the birthplace in 1859 of William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. Some plants succeed in scratching sustenance from this shifting wilderness. Cottonwood trees thrust defiantly skywards, sometimes with just their heads above a dune. When the dune moves on, they may be left encased in a plaster cast. Similarly, skunkbush (lovely name right?) sumacs sit on stools of hardened gypsum. Soaptree yuccas survive by pushing snake-like stems through the dunes. Their creamy, bell-shaped flowers, known as ‘Candle of the Lord’, are New Mexico’s State flower. Native Americans ate the shoots and flowers made porridge from their seeds. Few large animals venture into the white desert – it offers little food and no shelter from the killing midday heat. Sands pocket gophers thrive because they burrow into the sand away from the heat and Apache pocket mice also shelter in these gopher burrows. Along with three kinds of lizard – particularly the bleached earless lizard – these pocket mice have developed bleached white colouring that camouflages them from predators such as owls and hawks. Unlike the Westerners of old, who braved the heat and the sandstorms on foot or horseback, modern visitors to White Sands can drive through the area along a signposted route.
