I see an opportunity to mess with character design, I go for it

A small AU idea where everything is relatively the same, but Cedric, falsely accused of high treason after regicide and Elyon's disappearance, stripped of his title and wanted dead, reluctantly joins the rebellion and competes for leadership with Aldarn and Julian to get his revenge and again spread his influence over Metamoor. Knowing well enough that this world is dying without a Heart, he travels to Earth to find Elyon and allies himself with the Guardians to secure their help despite his hatred of Kandrakar - however, his original intention to simply place Elyon on the throne as a puppet monarch will change once he sees how deep the connection between her and Cornelia is and how she can be influenced by the Oracles via Guardians. Fortunately, there are no moral principles that would prevent him from working for both sides to ultimately side with whoever will emerge victorious.

Caleb, on the other hand, remains the prince's creation and acts as his right hand. Dangerous in combat (basically being a nerfed Phobos version capable exclusively of plant magic, he is able to summon life draining vines in Metamoor, has a mental link with other Whisperers and wields that electric magic spear (ouch!)) and loyal to his master, Caleb is, much to the prince's annoyance, very idealistic and as honorable and compassionate as his position allows him to be. Sincerely believing that Phobos intents to bring Elyon back to restore the magic balance and rule together with her, Caleb starts his mission hellbent on locating the heir before the nefarious serpent - for the good of Metamoor people.. right?

Firstly, gavriel.

Why? Reasons are obvious. He killed the woman he loved, who was tella and Scarlett’s mother, he then abused Scarlett as he tried to get her to master her powers, locked her head in a cage, wrongfully assumed the throne of Valenda, held a torture party, tried to make Scarlett remove Julian’s feelings of love for her, and then tried to kill tella. He also locked Julian in a dungeon where he was whipped, and locked Dante in one too.

The undead queen and the murdered king.

They terrorised Valenda after elantine’s death by killing and hurting people so that when gavriel took the throne, the citizens would think him to be some sort of saviour. #manipulationcouple

Lastly, jester mad.

Jester mad had a tendency to physically use people as puppets, including Julian. And try as he might to make us forget that, I know Julian and the other victims probably doesn’t.

All in all, they tortured people, killed people and where all round terrible. They are not the kind of people you should be in company with.

If you still really need to have this party, (debatable), you seriously need to reconsider your guest list and confer with jacks as even the nicer fates hate him.

I do not want to see you hurt Evangeline, as if we continue on the current path, there will be a lot of murder at this party.

Pinocchio deciding to take Carlo's name, not because he is Carlo but because he feels a connection to the boy his soul once was and a responsibility to live the life that was so wrongfully smothered in him.

Pinocchio landing on the full name "Carlo Venigni" (real Pinocchio fans will get this one), since he was all but adopted by Pulcinella. He hears "Master Carlo" and "My Boy" almost more then he's called "P" these days.

Pinocchio telling children stories about his brother, Romeo, and his sister, Sophia. Telling them about how strong his sister was and how kind his brother was. That Sophia was a fairy abd Romeo was a King, and thats why they couldn't be beside him any longer.

Pinocchio letting his hair grow even more, braiding it like Sophia's.

Writing letters to Belle, Fox, and Cat.

He helps The Experiment set up a Remembrance Altar for Adelina and her sister, complete with The White Ladys' mask.

He brings The Broken Puppet to Lorenzini and asks for his first favour, fix them and become their second friend, just like how Venigni was P's second friend.

P keeping subtle tabs on all his companions. Eugenie, Hugo, Julian, even Giangio- until the name and man disappear into the ether...

P burying "Carlo" and "Romeo" next to eachother.

He looks after Polendina and the Hotel, he's the first Stalker in when theres a crisis, and the last one out.

He keeps Romeo's Monad locket on his nightstand.

He does tell Venigni the truth about Geppetto oneday, but the man already knew..

P buries all the Stalker masks he accrued, honouring them by laying their struggle to rest.

He gives Lorenzini Julian's ring.

He finds and cremates Atkinson, he sends Belle all his belongings.

Happy STS! Who is your favorite antagonist to write? What makes them so special? (Also, bonus question, would you give them a Disney villain song? Which one?)

Surprisingly, I tend not to write antagonists. That's usually my wife's job. My favorite of hers is Julian, a powerful Mente faery who is very much a puppet master, pulling strings and getting folks to do his bidding while his hands stay clean.

The closest thing I can think of it that I wrote myself was Drisk, a messy ex of one Lia's friends in Foxes and Fate. Drisk is a carrion fey, and when Socks broke up with them, they kind of pulled a "melt into a puddle of dramatic goo" ala Howls Moving Castle

Except when that temper tantrum didn't make Socks stay, they flew off the handle and started launching decaying barbs at them. One got lodged in Sock's heart, and due to plot it became their riftling, Egg.

I really enjoyed writing Drisk's scenes bc it was very horror movie, that place where fantastic hyperbole meets the horror of mundane monstrous behavior. Drisk was extremely toxic, and Socks was very much an apologizer for their rotten behavior (no pun intended). So sitting in Socks' head when they realized this was Not Okay was very cathartic

Pink Floyd - Another Brick in The Wall, Part Two

Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 by Pink Floyd is the second and most prominent segment of 3-part rock opera written by the bassist Roger Waters as a criticism against both corporal punishment and his experiences in a rigid, abusive schooling environment. 

The video depicts children gathering or fleeing away from a creature dressed in a black uniform who appears to be controlled by puppet strings. The creature is likely implied to be a “teacher” the lyrics point to as it is then shown stuffing children into a school-shaped meat grinder which results in a writhing pile of formless material. Next the teacher transforms into a hammer and a large wall the same color as the ground material is shown closing around a child. The children shown before sing a verse and then move again, possibly returning home to take shelter from the marching hammers being commanded by a hammer-shaped speaker. 

The German Ideology by Karl Marx

In The German Ideology, Karl Marx argues that “Life is not determined by consciousness, but consciousness by life” (Marx, 1932) meaning that a person’s ideology will always be influenced by the world around them and how they behave instead of the other way around and I believe that is what we are seeing here.

“Thought-control,” as used in the song, means the attempt to restrict ideas and impose opinions through censorship and the control of school curricula which is depicted as an extreme, teachers being used as tools to literally transform children into bricks in a wall; which is to say: unremarkable, conformist, complacent to someone else’s design. 

The tone is a deep contrast from the previous video, but I found many similar connections to our readings on ideology in this video and will attempt to show a tie between these two pieces. 

The Lonely Island - Boombox (ft. Julian Casablancas)

Clearly, being a comedic piece, it’s harder to try and view it critically and take anything seriously from it but I interpret this as another perspective of the “grinding” of individuality down into bland roles and social scripts, one that even suggests a solution! The world depicted in this video is the objective of the unseen puppet masters in Pink Floyd video: where wealthy old money white people remain in power, people are too stoic and lethargic to cut loose, people who can’t take care of themselves anymore are thrown into facilities where they get taken advantage of, and all there is to look forward to is bland boiled goose! The premises are all depicted in a humorous way, but they do reflect a somber reality. 

There is hope however, in the form of Andy Sandberg’s boombox containing a song and turbo bass so powerful that it can destroy preconceived notions and bring people of all walks of life together (and summon fingerless gloves for everyone to wear). It’s even shown in the video how he first opens up the minds of the people in power using his music before taking to the streets and getting everybody involved! The bricks and hammers are being being freed and given the power to do whatever they want to do and think what they want to. 

Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses by Louis Althusser

“However, while admitting that [religious ideology, ethical ideology, legal ideology, political ideology, etc.] do not correspond to reality, i.e. that they constitute an illusion, we admit that they do make allusion to reality, and that they need only be "interpreted" to discover the reality of the world behind their imaginary representation of that world (ideology = illusion/allusion)” (Althusser, 1970). Now obviously, there is no magic boombox, hammer people, or school-shaped meat grinders but they all came from somewhere within their writer’s minds. Andy Sandberg uses humor to address oppressive pipeline that Roger Waters initially conflicted with, though they work at opposite ends. Pink Floyd asks that the kids are left alone and not turned into bricks, while the Lonely Island attempts to free the bricks through the power of art and expression. Though they deal in different tones and methodology, their ideologies are similar, both fighting against the system that Marx’’s ideology pointed out all the way back in 1932. 

“Every new class [as a result of revolution], therefore, achieves its hegemony only on a broader basis than that of the class ruling previously, whereas the opposition of the non-ruling class against the new ruling class develops all the more sharply and profoundly. Both these things determine the fact that the struggle to be waged against this new ruling class, in its turn, aims at a more decided and radical negation of the previous conditions of society than could all previous classes which sought to rule” (Marx, 1932). The characters Andy Sandberg and Julian Casablancas play may be revolutionists, but they’re not perfect leaders either. The final segment of the music video depicts the duo’s disgust at the sight of elderly people making love, which is understandable, but could possibly imply that they don’t have everyone’s best interests at heart if going forward they decide based on factors such as age or sexuality, who they will and will not uplift using the boombox. Progress has definitely been made, but now what underlying issues with the duo will arise when the next revolution covering even more people’s needs will occur?

It hadn’t been said so much as a revelation — it wasn’t one, for that matter. No, it was more out of blind hope in her fellow cylon, desperation that his usual dark-humored flare would come and it would wash away the awful tension in the air. When that wasn’t the case, it was as though her own blood had run cold, nausea resurfacing all too readily.

If even the Master of Mayhem wasn’t cracking jokes, then they were well and truly FUCKED.

"— What if everything we've been told is a lie?"

An atypically-averted gaze lifted at her words, watching as she gagged around the neon-colored bile in her throat. She looked utterly miserable. That usual, uncannily-perfect complexion had paled to a sickly hue, and the newfound life in her eyes lately now looked muted. The front of her once-white blouse was ripped slightly, stained with the remnants of induced vomiting; her hands were trembling as they tried to wipe the mess away from her cleavage. It was… disturbing, seeing the face of Heart’s reprogramming sessions for so many years suddenly on the other side of their punishments.

“Oh, darling.”  Sympathy had always been lost on them, so he made no effort to fake it, settling instead on a sardonic drawl. His lips curled back into what he’d intended as a sarcastic smile, but felt more like a snarl in hindsight.  “It always has been.”

The tone wasn’t befitting of having just watched your girlfriend puke her guts out, but that shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. They had never known how to communicate, much less admit when their programming went off the rails into emotions that they weren’t able to correctly process.

“But you know that, don’t you?”  His voice had gone cold, toxic vapor curling heavily from his mouth on the next breath. He twisted the end of a cigarette, stubbing it out against the pads of his fingers before dropping it onto the filthy ground between them. The pain of it was short-lived, burns healing over as quickly as they’d been caused, but it was still a brief reprieve from the tension that had built up.  “That’s half the reason reprogramming exists. So that when people figure out that Heart’s been blowing smoke up their ass, you can break their brain into forgetting about it —”

“... Slink —”

“... And turn them back into a proper puppet for your —”

“— Julian, stop!” The plea effectively cut his ranting short, surprise tangible in the air, their world nearly seeming set to ‘pause’ for a moment.

She almost looked as though she may start crying (could AKI units even cry…?), breathes hitching out in uneven pants not unlike a panicking dog. It was fundamentally wrong, and abruptly forced him to remember exactly how complicated reactivating her bio seemed to have been for her. Seeing her actually look scared, in any way, was somehow more uncanny than any of her sex-bot bullshit ever had been.

An uncomfortable scoff broke the momentary silence that had fallen between them, green-blue eyes searching hers for… something. Humanity to latch onto where his own heart did not presently care to, perhaps. “Aki, Aki…”  It came out slightly chastising, but at least he’d managed a gentler tone this time.  “You’ll drive yourself stark raving mad at this rate.”

Reaching out, he moved to finally clean away the residual mess from her mouth, staining blackened fingertips in a combination of smeared lipstick and rainbow vomit. A grotesque attempt at comfort, but one that nobody else would’ve likely been graced with.

“I am frightened.”  It was robotic, matter-of-fact, but said in such a final way that his own stomach lurched with nausea. AKI was not supposed to be afraid of anything. She wasn’t even supposed to be capable of feeling fear, damn it. (A part of him had to wonder if that wasn’t the emotion she’d been afflicted with at all. If maybe this was just an obsession’s way of panicking. In the end, it didn’t really matter.)

Shaking his head, fumbling with a handkerchief between them as he stepped closer, the response came in a rough sigh, “Don’t be.”

He kissed her before he could think better of it, mouth sealing over hers with an intensity that was usually quite reversed. Gripping her jaw, he kept her in place even as the sour taste of lingering sick registered. His other hand fell to her chest, fingers pressing into the curve of her collarbone until he could feel it threatening to crack. It was revolting, needlessly violent, harshly nipping into each other’s mouths more than purely kissing…

But when he finally pulled back, she was almost smiling again, so who fucking cared.

“Don’t be.”  He hoarsely repeated, own voice nearly glitching from the way her chipping manicure had fallen to dig into his skin in return. Warm blood dripped slowly, lazily, from the scrapes. When she moved her shoulder, the connecting bones cracked unnaturally. And through it all, he felt alive again.  “Don’t. I’ll tear them apart before I’d ever let them take you away.”

I assume fandom as in spaces online what I participate in or visit, because there are many things that I enjoy but whose fandoms I don't interact with. That specially applies to music. My social battery can only last so long.

Anime/Manga

Despite how my art looks like, I’m very drawn to shows that are colorful, endearing, and dynamic. I want fluff, friendship, sparkles, no major world-altering conflict, just overall characters having a good time and creating impactful relationships amongst each other. I love wholesome happy endings, which is great for my soft heart. I know JJBA doesnt fit that category but it’s outlandish enough to make it a lot of fun. I have a soft spot for Vento Aureo in particular.

Now, I open an exception for Junji Ito. I love inhuman horror, where the threat can't be understood nor controlled. Amazing artstyle aswell.

Books

Dostoievski, Bulgakov, Tchekov

Rip dostoievski, you would have loved Mob Psycho 100. I feel like he would really appreciate a story centered around a character discovering themselves and how to approach their own feelings and the world and people that surround him. I know russian literature has a reputation of being heavy to intrepret and digest. It tackles complicated themes, yes. However, it does that in relatable, heartfelt, and oftentimes comedic way.

On a personal note, some works will be especially funny if you’re queer. As a queer person myself I intrepret A LOT of russian lit characters as being gay, messy, and unhinged. I say that as the highest of compliments. The people in the fandoms I'm in also agree

Games

I have no shame in admitting I want easy to play games. I already challenge myself with art daily, I don’t care about challenging myself in hobbies.

So I like a lot of visual novel/dating sims. I really liked The Arcana. My fave is, unfortunately, Lucio. I love mess! Love his looks and his horrible little attitude. I want a Valdemar tale. Currently, I’m also up to date with Last Legacy from the fictif app. I started Felix’s route (same with Julian from The Arcana, I went for the edgy emo one) but ended up picking Sage as a favorite. Like I said, I love mess! am currently waiting for a rime route idc if he tried to murder me

I really like Outlast as well, and have watched many, many playthroughs. Of both games. I've read the comics. Currently dormant in that fandom, but I am waiting for the new game to come out.

How to Cook That- Ann Reardon my beloved! She debunks hacks, shows how to actually make them work, saves cakes, makes gorgeous food. Very clever, very wholesome (i stan dave). I also never miss a video

Jaboody Show- Not quite youtubers. They often upload their twitch streams on youtube. I don't watch them all tho. I always think 'i'll just watch 30 min of this 6 hour video' and end up watching the whole thing because they're so fun. Great to listen while working

Utsu-P - Not a youtuber, but a musician. A vocaloid producer, to be exact. Also never miss an upload. Moksha is my fave album and Unique is at close second.

Music

Speaking of Unhhh, I love the music Trixie Mattel (Brian Firkus) puts out. Yellow Cloud, and Gold always make me happy I’m alive. I don't belong to any fandom, however. I don’t stay inside genres either, I go after music for the emotions they bring in me. I spent the last few days listening to Crazier by Taylor Swift, the song she performed in the Hannah Montana movie shdjksahdjk. Some weeks prior it was Baba Yaga by Slaughter to Prevail. I have clear memories of listening to the Cheetah Girls while doing character design, too. Sometimes I listen to 20 minute videos that have snippets of a bunch of pop music from a certain year, when I need to keep up the energy. I'm the type that loves a band but doesn't even know the main singer's name. Which is great, cuz music fandoms look WILD. I'm peacefully enjoying things.

What a very long post! But this is basically it. Also shout out to 90 Day Fiance, that I keep up with because I always watch it with my mom. It's our thing. I'm in that fandom aswell cuz I love the chaos and telling my mom gossip.

And yet I adore and feel sympathy, empathy for May Pang, who actually seemed to care for John and wanted him happy, wanted him and encouraged him to be around old friends and family, was warm to Julian, felt for Cynthia, wanted John to become more independent and sure of himself, and had a huge distaste for John's substance abuse. She cried for him not being able to reunite with Paul, when he seemed so excited, because Yoko pulled her strings and he was back in her clutches (even though May told him not to go back, don't go see her, and he simply told her he'd be fine-- yeah right) and I'll be bloody shallow-- May was beautiful.

So no, majority of us don't like her because she's not white and because she's a woman. Majority of us despise her, or simply cannot support her because of how manipulative she was/is, she stalked both Paul and John, she harassed John, she got him on heroin, she isolated him, she fed into his impulsive, irrational anger and cruelty towards Paul, she was controlling, cruel to Julian and Cynthia, entitled, brought out the worse in John, enabled John's substance abuse even though she knew it made him violent and unstable because he could be easier to handle when out of it, picked the woman John was to have an affair with and forced them to keep tabs and played puppet master, plays widow even though she'd moved on months before John was unfortunately killed and there were plans to divorce, and then had that man move right in and wear John's clothes, cremated John even though he vehemently opposed it, didn't invite any close family or friends to the ceremony, acted like Paul never helped her even though HE DID, made Julian tell Sean John died, wouldn't give Julian many things of his dad and so Paul had to help buy back a lot of his things to give to Julian, okay'ed putting John's bloody clothes and glasses up to be gawked at, has never ONCE apologized for anything she'd done, she's a proud and open sexist(men are subservient and all women of the world are ni**ers), and to this day still uses John and his name. And if I've missed anything I'm sorry there's just so much vitriolic bullshit this woman has done and behaved like.

It's all very convenient how just, all that she's done is simply forgotten or whitewashed because you can't fathom a woman, a woman from a minority, could be, can be a horrible person, and that's simply why she isn't liked or supported.

As a woman who is a minority, I think you're willfully ignorant and stupidly stubborn.

She's a vile, scummy human being and the fact the lot of you defend her and try to White Knight for her simply because she's got a pussy, and isn't white, is embarrassing. You're near as embarrassing and pathetic as those who openly and proudly stan Amber Heard.

And you cannot change my mind.

„The Secret History” by Donna Tartt ~ review

My feelings about this book are really unclear to me tbh.

I finished it today so im still didn’t have time to objectively look at the book as whole. But im still posting a review because why not XD

Just so you know there might be some spoilers be carefull

Let’s start with things I’m sure I liked.

The writing Oh lord i loved it so much. The descriptions were so vibrant and illustrative and not boring which is often an issue for me. I actually enjoyed reading them and i didn’t feel like they were hard to get through. And the metaphores were just *chef’s kiss*. Overall the writing was amazing it’s my main reason why i want to read another books by Donna Tartt.

The beginning and first half I heard people saying that the beginning was really an issue for them to get through and get hooked by the story. Well, it wasn’t that case for me. I thought the parts when Richard was talking about his life before Hampden and how he got there were interesting. Just like the parts where we started getting to know our gang. The mystery behind those characters captivated me into reading it. Like in general i truly enjoyed first half of the book. The moments in the Francis’ house were really fun to read. Richard’s winter was also interesting to get through. Also this whole thing with the rest of the gang doing something behind Richard’s back really kept me flipping pages.

Certain characters Well, most of the characters in this book were unlikeable. But i think it was done on purpose so I’m not mad. But there are few that i actually liked. First, we have Richard. That might be surprising because of the fact that he’s so bland and he basically doesn’t have a personality, he just makes himself one, but that made me sympathize with him and even relate a little bit. It sounds kinda sad XD but i can understand his need to fit in and lying about his life (although i’ve never done that) because of the feeling that his real life and self is boring and dull. I see Camilla as a promise of a really good character. I feel like if she would get more time in the book, proper development and if she would actually do something meaningfull she would be so much more interesting. But I still think she was fine. I also can’t say nothing wrong about Francis he’s just a good guy.

The ending It wasn’t anything special but i think it was a good closure to the story.

Now moving on to what i didn’t like.

Second half of the book After the death of Bunny I felt like the book kinda lost its direction. I had no idea where the story was going and for some time i think the book also hadn’t. It was just boring tbh. Maybe till Charles started doing some more sketchy shit and Camilla moved out it was hard to get through. The whole funeral and what was happening after (idek what was that) really didn’t do it for me.

How the book didn’t affect me emotionally I almost felt nothing while reading this book. Beyond the curiosity that kept me going. Like i didn’t really care that Bunny died, I wasn’t even really happy about it, I was just „Oh okay finally the part that the beginning was talking about.”. I didn’t even care that Henry killed himself. Or the attempted suicide of Francis or drinking problems of Charles. I think it was because I just felt ambivalent about those charscters and i think thats why this read wasn’t really emotional for me. It’s not necessary a bad thing but i just expected more.

The disappearance of Julian Morrow I really thought that this character would play a major role in the story. Or at least be more present. Or, maybe, be like a puppet master and secretly manipulate everyone from behind the scenes. But then he just like… Wasn’t even there? Like he was in the beginning, he had some small bits in the middle, and he was at the very end. I am really dissapointed that his character was so underused. Because i genuinely think he was an interesting character.

Incest Pretty self explanatory. What was the reason to even include it?

Portrayal of gay people I don’t know it felt weird with the moments where same sex interactions happened just because someone was at hand at the time.

Summary

Now thinking about it more I can say that objectively this book was great. That’s why I was so unsure about my final rating. But i asked myself a question: is that book as good as other books that you like and rate higher than 4 stars? And the answer is no. I wasn’t as invested in the characters or the plot to say that it is. Although i would still recommended. Just beware that it might not live up to your expectations.

The Secret History - Donna Tartt Review

But if I’ve learned one thing in my short sad life, it is that that particular platitude is a lie. Love doesn’t conquer everything. And whoever thinks it does is a fool. - ‘But how,’ said Charles, who was close to tears, ‘how can you possibly justfy cold-blooded murder?’ Henry lit a cigarette. ‘I prefer to think of it [. . .] as a redistribution of matter.’ - It does not do to be frightened of things about which you know nothing.

Review: Donna Tartt is a master of subtext. Through the lens of unreliable narrator Richard Papen, Professor Julian Morrow and his group of Classics students are perfect - if a bit odd. Henry Winter is a young genius. Francis Abernathy is an attractive and masterful charmer, evident in his ‘Cubitum eamus?’ Twins Camilla and Charles Macaulay are curiously - almost morbidly - beautiful. Edmund “Bunny” Corcoran is the perfect American son, everything Richard wishes he was. Julian Morrow is their wise and philosophical mentor. However, all of them, under the surface, have issues, and Julian took advantage of these. He was the puppeteer behind Henry’s horrific acts - the murder of the farmer and, eventually, of Bunny. The Classical allusions serve to further Tartt’s point: Morrow is Aristotle, attempting to make Alexanders out of Henrys and Camillas. Tartt also deals with subjects such as poverty and homophobia in an important way - and Bunny clearly had it coming. My only complaint is with the gratuitous anachronisms. Despite being set in the 1980s, some of the characters still write with an ink and quill and speak as though they just arrived from the Victorian Era. Further, the female characters in this novel were severely underdeveloped when compared to their male counterparts, and are only considered anything more than objects for Richard’s amusement when he becomes closer to him. Perhaps this can be attributed to the male protagonist, but I believe it is indicative of some shortcomings in Tartt’s writing.  I give this work 5 out of 5 stars. It was not perfect - but what book is? This was about as close to it as you can get.

Meaning of name: 

Ximena: Basque variant of Simone, meaning “one who has heard”

María Magdalena: Spanish variant of Mary Magdalene, derived of “of Magdala”, a village whose name means “tower” in Old Hebrew

Family: 

Heloisa and Cibela de Rubalcaba: Ximena’s elder sisters, Heloisa by 6 and Cibela by 12 years. In her youth and early adulthood, due to being closer in age she spent more time with Heloisa than with Cibela, to whom she did look up though as a role model as well as Cibela being more introverted like her in contrast to the very extroverted Heloisa. Cibela was mostly absent during her childhood, whereas she and Heloisa spent most of their free time, and tutor-free time together.

Marisol de Rubalcaba (deceased): Her mother and the former Marquesa de Rubalcaba. Having immense favouritism for her firstborn, Marisol was rather distant towards her younger daughters but would try to be an affectionate mother towards them.

Valentín Saavedra (deceased): Ximena’s late father and a sea-faring merchant prince from the higher Cartagense bourgeoisie. Like his wife, Valentín favored his eldest daughter yet tried to encourage all of his daughters’ ambitions and work. Ximena is said to be similar to him in terms of personality.

Esmerelda de Rubalcaba: The matriarch in-all-but-name of the Rubalcaba family, Marisol’s older sister and Ximena’s aunt. Esmerelda is arguably the most central maternal figure in her life, even more than her own mother, and her primary tutor. She was the one who recognized Ximena’s affinity for magic and gave her vital support when she entered the Magician’s Guild.

Agustín de Rubalcaba: Esmerelda’s only son and Ximena’s cousin. A diplomat that wasn’t under his mother’s wing unlike his cousins, he is very affectionate towards Ximena and fulfills the role of an older brother for her as well as being her only connection to her family after her exile.

Segismundo: Ximena’s familiar whom she found in the rainforests of Northern Calpacia sometime after her exile as a hatchling and nursed him back to health. Their connection is deep and he is both trusting and protective of her.

Her eyebrows are thick and dark, groomed but not thinned, and she has bags underneath her eyes. Her black hair is long and curly with the occasional grey hair, especially near her temples.

She gives off the impression of being rather serene and after her exile purposely tries to change the way she spoke and held herself in order to appear less like an aristocrat and more like a commoner.

Backstory: 

Born into the influential aristocratic Rubalcaba family based in Cartagenth, the capital of the Calpacian Empire in the West, Ximena received an extensive education and since she had the most affinity to magic within her family, a vast tutoring in magic while her sisters were put on other carreer tracks. The Rubalcabas have had a presence ever since the founding of Cartagenth thanks to Fairuza, one of the city’s original founders, and then with Xochitl I., who was rumored to be the primary force behind the union of various kingdoms into what became Calpacia. They have centuries long history of being close to Calpacia’s sovereign, the Zaan, and involvement in politics, the military and on very rare occasions the Magician’s Guild of Cartagenth, where Ximena was meant to eventually become Head of the Guild and a vital instrument in the plans her aunt Esmerelda had for her, her sisters and the fate of all of Calpacia.

Mostly due to their riches, privilege and upbringing, the climate in Ximena’s family was a rather toxic one, with a centuries-old legacy hanging over them like a Damocles sword and envy, entitlement, jealously, sabotage and power struggles running rampant among them. Esmerelda’s desire to cement her family’s position and ensure their survival in the cut-throat environment in the Cartagense court as well as wanting to function as the driving force behind the pillars of powers saw her mercilessly using her family and to see them as little more than pawns to be utilized to achieve the desired goal. 

Being maneuvered like a puppet made Ximena resent her family; her sisters for refusing to lean against it or even relishing in it, her parents for tolerating this and her aunt for being a manipulative force of nature. The straw that broke the camel’s back occurred weeks before her coronation as Head of the Guild where a vision came to her during a reading and showed how she would use her magic and that of the Guild to help in fighting a total war against everyone who refused to kneel to Cartagense’s power, resulting in the deaths of countless people - and herself as one of those who were supposed to carry on this blood-stained legacy. The refusal to partake in such future atrocities and the secret reveal of plans by the War Council to actually provoke a conflict and throw the country into total warfare caused Ximena to have her status as noblewoman taken from her and be banished from Cartagenth… or clean up her act, beg for forgiveness and mercy from her family and have the chance to correct her mistakes. That choice presented by her aunt in a final confrontation was refused and so Ximena, once a lady, now a nobody, fled Cartagenth.

Having to pretend to be a commoner was difficult at first but soon became a necessity, as well as having to adopt a different identity to make it beyond the Calpacian borders. Meeting her familiar and having someone in whom to confide absolutely everything was a much needed outlet for her, and some years her only constant companions were Segismundo, for whom she would’ve laid down her life, and the fear of being discovered by Calpacian spies even outside of the empire. She met Asra when contemplating to escape to Hjalle and from there on to the eastern countries beyond Nevivon and continue to live her life in anonymity, but decided to return with him to Vesuvia, a city of which she knew Calpacia fostered no diplomatic relations with. Her relationship with Asra at some point transcended mere friendship but even when that ended, they always remained amicable with each other and arguably the most important person in each other’s lives. The building in which Asra and she eventually opened as their ship was a gift from Agustín who was the only person from her old life Ximena ever contacted through magical and untraceable means. In Vesuvia, she also met magician and professional medium Sayelle bint Zahir from the city state of Bizatena at the Eastern Coast, and another exile from their respective home country, Deirdra Margalit of Calpacia’s neighboring kingdom Oriol.

She died from the Red Plague at the age of 34 while trying help Julian, with whom she had common friends, to find a cure for the illness that had already claimed thousands within the city. The efforts of those close to her did little in preventing her passing, and yet she woke up a year later with no memory of her previous life, her friends and the bond to her familiar being severed beyond repair.
